by_o nation_n now_o hence_o observe_v a_o strange_a point_n to_o wit_n that_o the_o ancient_a prophet_n who_o be_v most_o worthy_a man_n of_o god_n be_v persecute_v in_o their_o time_n not_o so_o much_o by_o foreigner_n and_o enemy_n to_o religion_n as_o by_o those_o that_o be_v outward_o member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o god_n and_o professor_n of_o religion_n this_o may_v seem_v strange_a that_o man_n live_v in_o god_n church_n shall_v grow_v to_o this_o height_n of_o impiety_n to_o become_v persecutor_n of_o god_n saint_n but_o saint_n

to_o be_v in_o christ_n by_o faith_n whereby_o we_o have_v 1_o communion_n with_o he_o so_o we_o must_v conceive_v that_o this_o communion_n with_o christ_n be_v in_o his_o death_n and_o burial_n so_o as_o our_o sinful_a nature_n with_o all_o our_o corrupt_a affection_n be_v nail_v to_o his_o cross_n and_o bury_v in_o his_o grave_n as_o the_o apostle_n show_v at_o large_a rom._n 6._o 3_o 4._o etc._n etc._n now_o when_o this_o persuasion_n shall_v take_v place_n in_o our_o heart_n it_o will_v by_o god_n grace_n keep_v we_o from_o yield_v to_o corrupt_v motion_n and_o desire_n and_o move_v we_o to_o labour_v to_o subdue_v they_o daily_o for_o herein_o stand_v our_o assurance_n that_o we_o have_v fellowship_n with_o christ_n when_o we_o have_v fellowship_n in_o his_o death_n and_o therefore_o as_o we_o see_v malefactor_n to_o cease_v from_o stealth_n and_o robbery_n when_o they_o be_v once_o hang_v so_o we_o be_v crucify_v with_o christ_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o old_a man_n must_v not_o suffer_v the_o same_o to_o rule_v in_o our_o affection_n or_o to_o have_v force_n in_o our_o member_n know_v as_o the_o apostle_n 6._o say_v that_o our_o old_a man_n be_v crucify_v with_o all_o say_v they_o be_v to_o love_n god_n above_o all_o and_o my_o neighbour_n as_o myself_o &_o to_o believe_v to_o be_v save_v by_o christ_n now_o this_o they_o know_v as_o well_o as_o the_o best_a and_o hereupon_o they_o become_v contemner_n of_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n the_o ordinary_a mean_n of_o their_o salvation_n as_o of_o a_o thing_n needless_a and_o superfluous_a this_o conceit_n be_v common_a among_o we_o and_o do_v much_o hurt_n to_o many_o a_o man_n soul_n the_o way_n to_o cut_v it_o off_o be_v this_o the_o vain_a man_n that_o be_v puff_v up_o with_o remedy_n this_o conceit_n must_v examine_v himself_o touch_n his_o knowledge_n whether_o it_o knowledge_n be_v sufficient_a to_o his_o salvation_n and_o for_o this_o end_n he_o must_v make_v inquiry_n in_o himself_o for_o these_o two_o thing_n first_o whether_o he_o see_v his_o own_o natural_a 1_o blindness_n and_o whether_o he_o be_v move_v thereby_o to_o labour_n for_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o will_n where_o this_o be_v want_v there_o be_v nothing_o but_o a_o vain_a conceit_n of_o knowledge_n second_o whether_o his_o knowledge_n 2_o be_v join_v with_o conversion_n of_o heart_n from_o sin_n unto_o god_n and_o with_o reformation_n of_o life_n from_o evil_a to_o good_a this_o change_n of_o heart_n and_o life_n go_v with_o all_o save_a knowledge_n now_o if_o these_o be_v want_v as_o undoubted_o they_o be_v in_o all_o vain_a person_n then_o be_v their_o knowledge_n so_o far_o from_o be_v save_v knowledge_n profitable_a to_o salvation_n that_o it_o rather_o turn_v to_o their_o deep_a condemnation_n the_o second_o imagination_n in_o man_n occasion_v he_o to_o sin_n be_v the_o 2_o persuasion_n of_o his_o strong_a faith_n the_o more_o ignorant_a sort_n that_o oath_n this_o be_v perjury_n because_o in_o so_o do_v he_o speak_v against_o his_o mind_n and_o persuasion_n second_o in_o perjury_n there_o must_v be_v a_o oath_n it_o be_v not_o perjury_n to_o speak_v a_o thing_n that_o be_v false_a unless_o he_o also_o swear_v to_o the_o thing_n he_o speak_v false_o against_o his_o mind_n and_o yet_o every_o oath_n make_v not_o direct_a perjury_n unless_o it_o be_v a_o bind_a oath_n for_o a_o man_n may_v swear_v to_o a_o thing_n that_o be_v unlawful_a and_o after_o alter_v his_o mind_n and_o not_o perform_v his_o oath_n without_o the_o guilt_n of_o perjury_n as_o if_o a_o child_n be_v under_o age_n do_v bind_v himself_o by_o oath_n to_o marry_v without_o his_o parent_n consent_n but_o come_v to_o ripe_a year_n do_v better_a consider_v of_o the_o romish_a priest_n who_o both_o defend_v in_o writing_n and_o practice_v in_o action_n this_o deceitful_a swear_n for_o be_v
lord_n and_o to_o clear_v this_o point_n yet_o further_o consider_v this_o that_o the_o root_n of_o hypocrisy_n and_o of_o atheism_n be_v in_o our_o nature_n whereby_o natural_o we_o do_v these_o three_o thing_n we_o love_v fear_v and_o trust_v in_o man_n more_o than_o in_o god_n and_o therefore_o do_v make_v man_n the_o judge_n of_o our_o action_n 1._o for_o love_n be_v we_o not_o grieve_v fast_o unto_o other_o meaning_n thereby_o that_o we_o shall_v conceal_v our_o private_a fast_n from_o man_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v when_o thou_o fast_o private_o so_o carry_v thyself_o that_o these_o occasion_n be_v prevent_v &_o the_o heart_n be_v more_o free_a to_o seek_v the_o approbation_n of_o god_n only_o this_o doctrine_n serve_v to_o direct_v our_o practice_n in_o god_n worship_n as_o first_o that_o we_o must_v not_o reserve_v our_o private_a preparation_n to_o god_n public_a worship_n worship_n till_o we_o come_v to_o the_o public_a congregation_n but_o prepare_v ourselves_o at_o home_n private_o in_o our_o chamber_n or_o closet_n for_o though_o to_o pray_v every_o where_o 1_o be_v lawful_a yet_o because_o convenient_a circumstance_n must_v be_v observe_v in_o worship_n
