X. 1 The weakness of the law-sacrifices 10 The sacrifice of Christs body once offered 14 for ever hath taken away sins 19 An exhortation to hold fast the faith with patience and thanksgiving FOr the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of the things can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year 4 For it is not possible that the bloud of bulls and of goats should take away sins 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world he saith * Psal 10.6 c. What thing is this thou hast done unto us Why hast thou served us thus that thou calledst us not when thou wentest to fight with the Midianites And they did chide with him † Heb. strongly sharply 2 And he said unto them What have I done now in comparison of you Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better then the vintage of Abiezer 3 God hath delivered into your hands the princes of Midian Oreb and Zeeb and what was I able to do in comparison of you Then their † Heb. spirit anger was abated toward him when he had said that 4 ¶ And Gideon came to Jordan and passed over he and the three hundred men that were with him saint yet pursuing them 5 And he said unto the men of Succoth Give I pray you loaves of bread unto the people that follow me for they be faint and I am pursuing after Zebah and Zalmunna kings of Midian 6 ¶ And the princes of Succoth said Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand that we should give bread unto thine army 7 And Gideon said Therefore when the LORD hath delivered Zebah and Zulmunna into mine hand then I will † Heb. 〈◊〉 tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers 8 And he went up thence to Penuel and spake unto them likewise and the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered him 9 And he spake also unto the men of Penuel saying When I come again in peace I will break down this tower 10 ¶ Now Zebah and Zalmunna were in Karkor and their hosts with them about fifteen thousand men all that were lest of all the hosts of the children of the east for there fell ‖ Or an hundred and twenty thousand every one drewing a sword an hundred and twenty thousand men that drew sword 11 ¶ And Gideon went up by the way of them that dwelt in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah and smote the host for the host was secure 12 And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled he pursued after them and took the two kings of Midian Zebah and Zalmunna and † Heb. terrified discomfited all the host 13 ¶ And Gideon the son of Joash returned from battel before the sun was up 14 And caught a young man of the men of Succoth and enquired of him and he † Heb. ●●rit described unto him the princes of Succoth and the elders thereof even threescore and seventeen men 15 And he came unto the men of Succoth and said Behold Zebah and Zalmunna with whom ye did upbraid me saying Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in thine hand that we should give bread unto thy men that are weary 16 And he took the elders of the city and thorns of the wilderness and briers and with them he † Heb. ma●e to know taught the men of Succoth 17 and he beat down the tower of * 1 King 12.25 Penuel and slew the men of the city 18 ¶ Then said he unto Zebah and Zalmunna What manner of men were they whom ye
crown from off his head the weight whereof was a talent of gold with the precious stones and it was set on Davids head and he brought forth the spoil of the city † Heb. very great in great abundance 31 And he brought forth the people that were therein and put them under saws and under harrows of iron and under axes of iron and made them pass through the brick-kiln and thus did he unto all the cities of the children of Ammon So David and all the people returned unto Jerusalem CHAP. XIII 1 Amnon loving Tamar by Jonadabs counsel feigning himself sick ravisheth her 15 He hateth her and shamefully turneth her away 19 Absalom entertaineth her and concealeth his purpose 23 At a sheep-shearing among all the kings sons he killeth Amnon 30 David grieving at the news is comforted by Jonadab 37 Absalom fleeth to Telmai at Geshur ANd it came to pass after this that Absalom the son of David had a fair sister whose name was Tamar and Amnon the son of David loved her 2 And Amnon was so vexed that he fell sick for his sister Tamar for she was a virgin and † Heb. it was marvellous o● hidden in the eyes of Amnon Amnon thought it hard for him to do any thing to her 3 But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab the son of Shimeah Davids brother and Jonadab was a very subtil man 4 And he said unto him Why art thou being the kings son † Heb. thin lean † Heb. morning by morning from day to day wilt thou not tell me And Amnon said unto him I love Tamar my brother Absaloms sister 5 And Jonadab said unto him Lay thee down on thy bed and make thy self sick and when thy father cometh to see thee say unto him I pray thee let my sister Tamar come and give me meat and dress the meat in my sight that I may see it and eat it at her hand 6 ¶ So Amnon lay down and made himself sick and when the king was come to see him Amnon said unto the king I pray thee let Tamar my sister come and make me a couple of cakes in my sight that I may eat at her hand 7 Then David sent home to Tamar saying Go now to thy brother Amnons house and dress him meat 8 So Tamar went to her brother Amnons house and he was laid down and she took ‖ Or paste flour and kneaded it and made cakes in his sight and did bake the cakes 9 And she took a pan and poured them out before him but he refused to eat And Amnon said Have out all men from me and they went out every man from him 10 And Amnon said unto Tamar Bring the meat into the chamber that I may eat of thine hand And Tamar took the cakes which she had made and brought them into the chamber to Amnon her brother 11 And when she had brought them unto him to eat he took hold of her and said unto her Come lie with me my sister 12 And she answered him Nay my brother do not † Heb. humble me force me for * Lev. 18.9 † Heb. it ought not so to be done no such thing ought to be done in Israel do not thou this folly 13 And I whither shall I cause my shame to go and as for thee thou shalt be as one of the fools in Israel now therefore I pray thee speak unto the king for he will not withhold me from thee 14 Howbeit he would not hearken unto her voice but being stronger then she forced her and lay with her 15 ¶ Then Amnon hated her † Heb. with great hatred greatly exceedingly so that the hatred wherewith he hated her was greater then the love wherewith he had loved her and Amnon said unto her Arise be gone 16 And she said unto him There is no cause this evil in sending me away is greater then the other that thou didst unto me But he would not hearken unto her 17 Then he called his servant that ministred unto him and said Put now this woman out from me and bolt the door after her 18 And she had a garment of divers colours upon her for with such robes were the kings daughters that were virgins apparelled Then his servant brought her out and bolted the door after her 19 ¶ And Tamar put ashes on her head and rent her garment of divers colours that was on her and laid her hand upon her head and went on crying 20 And Absalom her brother said unto her Hath Amnon thy brother been with thee but hold now thy peace my sister he is thy brother † Heb. set not thine heart regard not this thing So Tamar remained † Heb. and desolate desolate in her brother Absaloms house 21 ¶ But when king David heard of all these things he was very wroth 22 And Absalom spake unto his brother Amnon neither good nor bad for Absalom hated Amnon because he had forced his sister Tamar 23 ¶ And it came to pass after two full years that Absalom had sheep-shearers in Baal-hazor which is beside Ephraim and Absalom invited all the kings sons 24 And Absalom came to the king and said Behold now thy servant hath sheep-shearers let the king I beseech thee and his servants go with thy servant 25 And the king said to Absalom Nay my son let us not all now go lest we be chargeable unto thee And he pressed him howbeit he would not go but blessed him 26 Then said Absalom If not I pray thee let my brother Amnon go with us And the king said unto him Why should he go with thee 27 But Absalom pressed him that he let Amnon and all the kings sons go with him 28 ¶ Now Absalom had commanded his servants saying Mark ye now when Amnons heart is merry with wine and when I say unto you Smite Amnon then kill him fear not ‖ Or will you not since● have commanded you have not I commanded you be couragious and be † Heb. sons of valour valiant 29 And the servants of Absalom did unto Amnon as Absalom had commanded then all the kings sons arose and every man † Heb. rode gat him up upon his mule and fled 30 ¶ And it came to pass while they were in the way that tidings came to David saying Absalom hath slain all the kings sons and there is not one of them left 31 Then the king arose and tare his garments and lay on the earth and all his servants stood by with their clothes rent 32 And Jonadab the son of Shimeah Davids brother answered and said Let not my lord suppose that they have slain all the young men the kings sons for Amnon onely is dead for by the † Heb. mouth appointment of Absalom this hath been ‖ Or settled determined from the day that he forced his sister Tamar 33 Now therefore let not my lord the king take the thing
home there is as death 21 They have heard that I sigh there is none to comfort me all mine enemies have heard of my trouble they are glad that thou hast done it thou wilt bring the day that thou hast ‖ Or ●●●laimed called and they shall be like unto me 22 Let all their wickedness come before thee and do unto them as thou hast done unto me for all my transgressions for my sighs are many and my heart is saint CHAP. II. 1 Jeremiah lamenteth the misery of Jerusalem 20 He complaineth thereof to God HOw hath the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger and cast down from heaven unto the earth the beauty of Israel and remembred not his footstool in the day of his anger 2 The Lord hath swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob and hath not pitted he hath thrown down in his wrath the strong holds of the daughter of Judah he hath † Heb. male to south brought them down to the ground he hath polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof 3 He hath cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel he hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy and he burned against Jacob like a flaming fire which devoureth round about 4 He hath bent his bowe like an enemy he stood with his right hand as an adversary and slew † Heb. all the desireable of the eye all that were pleasant to the eye in the tabernacle of the daughter of Zion he poured out his fury like fire 5 The Lord was as an enemy he hath swallowed up Israel he hath swallowed up all her palaces he hath destroyed his strong holds and hath increased in the daughter of Judah mourning and lamentation 6 And he hath violently * Ps 80.12 and 89.40 Isa 5.5 taken away his ‖ Or ●ed●e tabernacle as if it were of a garden he hath destroyed his places of the assembly the LORD hath caused the solemn feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion and hath despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest 7 The Lord hath cast off his altar he hath abhorred his sanctuary he hath † Heb. Sout up given up into the hand of the enemy the walls of her palaces they have made a noise in the house of the LORD as in the day of a solemn feast 8 The LORD hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion he hath stretched out a line he hath not withdrawn his hand from † Heb. swallowing up destroying therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament they languished together 9 Her gates are sunk into the ground he hath destroyed and broken her bars her king and her princes are among the Gentiles the law is no more her * Ps 74.9 prophets also finde no vision from the LORD 10 The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground and keep silence they have cast up dust upon their heads they have girded themselves with sackcloth the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground 11 Mine eyes do fail with tears my bowels are troubled my liver is poured upon the earth for the destruction of the daughter of my people because the children and the sucklings ‖ Or saint swoon in the streets of the city 12 They say to their mothers Where is corn and wine when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city when their soul was poured out into their mothers bosom 13 What thing shall I take to witness for thee what thing shall I liken to thee O daughter of Jerusalem what shall I equal to thee that I may comfort thee O virgin daughter of Zion for thy breach is great like the sea who can heal thee 14 Thy * Jer. 2.8 and 5.31 and 14.14 and 23.16 prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee and they have not discovered thine iniquity to turn away thy captivity but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment 15 All that pass † Heb. by the way by clap their hands at thee they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem saying Is this the c●ty that men call * Ps 48.2 the perfection of beauty the joy of the whole earth 16 All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee they hiss and gnash the teeth they say We have swallowed her up certainly this is the day that we looked for we have found we have seen it 17 The LORD hath done that which he had * Lev. 26.16 devised he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old he hath thrown down and hath not pitied and he hath caused thine enemy to rejoyce over thee he hath set up the horn of thine adversaries 18 Their heart cried unto the Lord O wall of the daughter of Zion * Jer. 14.17 Ch. ● 16 let tears run down like a river day and night give thy self no rest let not the apple of thine eye cease 19 Arise cry out in the night in the beginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord lift up thy hands towards him for the life of thy young children that faint for hunger in the top of every street 20 ¶ Behold O LORD and consider to whom thou hast done this shall the women eat their fruit and children ‖ Or swaddled with their hands of a span long shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the LORD 21 The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets my virgins and my young men are fain by the sword thou hast slain them in the day of thy anger thou hast killed and not pitied 22 Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrours round about so that in the day of the LORDS anger none escaped nor remained those that I have swaddled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed CHAP. III. 1 The faithful bewall their ●alamities 22 By the mercies of God they nourish their hope 37 They acknowledge Gods justice 55 They pray for deliverance 64 and ven●eance on their enemies I Am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath 2 He hath led me and brought me into darkness but not into light 3 Surely against me is he turned he turneth his hand against me all the day 4 My flesh and my skin hath he made old he hath broken my bones 5 He hath builded against me and compassed me with gall and travel 6 He hath set me in dark places as they that be dead of old 7 He hath hedged me about that I cannot get out he hath made my chain heavy 8 Also when I cry and shout he shutteth out my prayer 9 He hath enclosed my ways with hewn stone the hath made my paths crooked 10 He was unto me as a bear lying in wait and as a
lion in secret places 11 He hath turned aside my ways and pulled me in pieces he hath made me desolate 12 He hath bent his bowe and set me as a mark for the arrow 13 He hath caused the † Heb. son● arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins 14 I was a * Jer. 20.7 derision to all my people and their song all the day 15 He hath filled me with † Heb. bitternesses bitterness he hath made me drunken with wormwood 16 He hath also broken my teeth with gravel-stones he hath ‖ Or. rolled me in the ashes covered me with ashes 17 And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace I forgat † Heb. good prosperity 18 And I said My strength and my hope is perished from the LORD 19 ‖ Or remember Remembring mine affliction and my misery the wormwood and the gall 20 My soul hath them still in remembrance and is † Heb. bowed humbled in me 21 This I † Heb. make to return to my heart recal to my minde therefore have I hope 22 ¶ It is of the LORDS mercies that we are not consumed because his compassions fail not 23 They are new every morning great is thy faithfulness 24 The LORD is my * Ps 15.5 73.26 and 119.57 Jer 10.15 portion saith my soul therefore will I hope in him 25 The LORD is good unto them that wait for him to the soul that seeketh him 26 It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD 27 It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth 28 He sitteth alone and keepeth silence because he hath born it upon him 29 He putteth his mouth in the dust if so be there may be hope 30 He giveth his check to him that smiteth him he is filled full with reproach 31 For the Lord will not cast off for ever 32 But though he cause grief yet will he have compassion according to the multitude of his mercies 33 For he doth not afflict † Heb. from his heart willingly nor grieve the children of men 34 To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth 35 To turn aside the right of a man before the face of ‖ Or a superi●●● the most High 36 To subvert a man in his cause the Lord ‖ Or seeth not approveth not 37 ¶ Who is he * Ps 33.9 that saith and it cometh to pass when the Lord commandeth it not 38 Out of the mouth of the most High proceedeth not * Am. 3.6 evil and good 39 Wherefore doth a living man ‖ Or murmurs complain a man for the punishment of his sins 40 Let us search and try our ways and turn again to the LORD 41 Let us lift up our heart with our hands unto God in the heavens 42 We have transgressed and have rebelled thou hast not pardoned 43 Thou hast covered with anger and persecuted us thou hast slain thou hast not pitied 44 Thou hast covered thy self with a cloud that our prayer should not pass through 45 Thou hast made us as the * 1 Cor. 4.13 off-scouring and refuse in the midst of the people 46 All our enemies have opened their mouths against us 47 * Is 24.17 Fear and a snare is come upon us desolation and destruction 48 Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people 49 Mine eye trickleth down and ceaseth not without any intermission 50 Till the LORD look down and behold from heaven 52 Mine eye affecteth † Heb. my s●ul mine heart ‖ Or more then all because of all the daughters of my city 52 Mine enemies chased me sore like a bird without cause 53 They have cut off my life in the dungeon and cast a stone upon me 54 Waters flowed over mine head then I said I am cut off 55 ¶ I called upon thy name O LORD out of the low dungeon 56 Thou hast heard my voice hide not thine ear at my breathing at my cry 57 Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee thou saidst Fear not 58 O LORD thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul thou hast redeemed my life 59 O LORD thou hast seen my wrong judge thou my cause 60 Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me 61 Thou hast heard their reproach O LORD and all their imaginations against me 62 The lips of those that rose up against me and their device against me all the day 63 Behold their sitting down and their rising up I am their musick 64 ¶ Render unto them a recompence O LORD according to the work of their hands 65 Give them ‖ Or obstinacy of heart sorrow of heart thy curse unto them 66 Persecute and destroy them in anger from under the * Ps 8.3 heavens of the LORD CHAP. IV. 1 Zion bewalleth her pitiful estate 13 She confesseth her sins 21 Edom is threatned 22 Zion is comforted HOw is the gold become dim how is the most fine gold changed the stones of the sanctuary are poured out in the top of every street 2 The precious sons of Zion comparable to fine gold how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers the work of the hands of the potter 3 Even the ‖ Or st●●alve● sea-monsters draw out the breast they give suck to their young ones the daughter of my people is become cruel like the ostriches in the wilderness 4 The tongue of the sucking childe cleaveth to the roof of his mouth for thirst the young children ask bread and no man breaketh it unto them 5 They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills 6 For the ‖ Or iniquity punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater then the punishment of the sin of Sodom that was * Gen. 19.35 overthrown as in a moment and no hands stayed on her 7 Her Nazarites were purer then snow they were whiter then milk they were more ruddy in body then rubies their polishing was of sapphire 8 Their visage is † Heb. carker then blackness blacker then a coal they are not known in the streets their skin cleaveth to their bones it is withered it is become like a stick 9 They that be slain with the sword are better then they that be slain with hunger for these † Heb. ●low out pine away stricken through for want of the fruits of the field 10 The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children they were their * Deu. 28.57 2 Kin. 6.29 meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people 11 The LORD hath accomplished his fury he hath poured out his fierce anger and hath kindled a fire in Zion and it hath devoured the foundations thereof 12 The kings of the earth and all
face but he said unto me Understand O son of man for at the time of the end shall be the vision 18 Now as he was speaking with me I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground but he touched me and † Heb. made me stand upon 〈◊〉 standing set me upright 19 And he said Behold I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation for at the time appointed the end shall be 20 The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia 21 And the rough goat is the king of Grecia and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king 22 Now that being broken whereas four stood up for it four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation but not in his power 23 And in the latter time of their kingdom when the transgressours † Heb. are accomplished are come to the full a king of fierce countenance and understanding dark sentences shall stand up 24 And his power shall be mighty but not by his own power and he shall destroy wonderfully and shall prosper and practise and shall destroy the mighty and the † Heb. people of the holy ones holy people 25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand and he shall magnifie himself in his heart and by ‖ Or prosperit● peace shall destroy many he shall also stand up against the prince of princes but he shall be * 2 Ma● 9.9 broken without hand 26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true wherefore shut thou up the vision for it shall be for many days 27 And I Daniel fainted and was sick certain days afterward I rose up and did the kings business and I was astonished at the vision but none understood it CHAP. IX 1 Daniel consid●ring the time of the captivity 3 maketh confession of sins 16 and prayeth for the restauration of Jerusalem 2● Ga●riel informeth him of the seventy weeks IN the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus of the seed of the Medes ‖ Or in which he c. which was made king over the realm of the Caldeans 2 In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years whereof the word of the LORD came to * Jer. 25 12 2● 1● Jeremiah the prophet that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem 3 ¶ And I set my face unto the Lord God to seek by prayer and supplications with fasting and sackcloth and ashes 4 And I prayed unto the LORD my God and made my confession and said O * Deut ●● Neh. 1.5 Lord the great and dreadful God keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him and to them that keep his commandments 5 * Baruch 1.17 We have sinned and have committed iniquity and have done wickedly and have rebelled even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgements 6 Neither have we hearkned unto thy servants the prophets which spake in thy name to our kings our princes and our fathers and to all the people of the land 7 O Lord righteousness ‖ Or thou hast c. belongeth unto thee but unto us confusion of faces as at this day to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and unto all Israel that are near and that are far off through all the countreys whither thou hast driven them because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee 8 O Lord * Baruch 1.15 to us belongeth confusion of face to our kings to our princes and to our fathers because we have sinned against thee 9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses though we have rebelled against him 10 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God to walk in his laws which he set before us by his servants the prophets 11 Yea all Israel have transgressed thy law even by departing that they might not obey thy voice therefore the curse is poured upon us and the oath that is written in the * Lev. 26.14 c. Deut. 28.15 c. 29.20 c. 30.17 18 3● 17 c. 32.19 c. law of Moses the servant of God because we have sinned against him 12 And he hath confirmed his words which he spake against us and against our judges that judged us by bringing upon us a great evil for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem 13 As * Lev 26.14 c. Deut. 23.15 Lam. 2.17 it is written in the law of Moses all this evil is come upon us yet † Heb. intreated we not the face of the c. made we not our prayer before the LORD our God that we might turn from our iniquities and understand thy truth 14 Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil and brought it upon us for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth for we obeyed not his voice 15 And now O Lord our God that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and hast † Heb. made thee a name gotten thee * Exod. 14 18. renown as at this day we have sinned we have done wickedly 16 ¶ O Lord according to all thy righteousness I beseech thee let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem thy holy mountain because for our sins and for the iniquities of our fathers Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us 17 Now therefore O our God hear the prayer of thy servant and his supplications and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate for the Lords sake 18 O my God incline thine ear and hear open thine eyes and behold our desolations and the city † Heb. whereupon thy name is call●● which is called by thy name for we do not † Heb. cause to fall present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses but for thy great mercies 19 O Lord hear O Lord forgive O Lord hearken and do defer not for thine own sake O my God for thy city and thy people are called by thy name 20 ¶ And whiles I was speaking and praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God 21 Yea whiles I was speaking in prayer even the man * Ch. 8.16 Gabriel whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning being caused to flie † Heb with wea●●●ess or flight swiftly touched me about the time of the evening oblation 22 And he informed me and talked with me and said O Daniel I am now come forth † Heb. to make thee skilful of understanding to give thee skill
God we have sinned we have done ungodly we have dealt unrighteously in all mine ordinances 13 Let thy wrath turn from us for we are but a few left among the heathen where thou hast scattered us 14 Hear our prayers O Lord and our petitions and deliver us for thine own sake and give us favour in the sight of them which have led us away 15 That all the earth may know that thou art the Lord our God because † Gr. thy came is called upon Israel Israel and his posterity is called by thy name 16 O Lord * Deut. 26.15 Isa 63.15 look down from thy holy house and consider us bow down thine ear O Lord to hear us 17 Open thine eyes and behold for the * Ps 6.5 115.17 Isa 38.15 19. dead that are in the graves whose † Gr. spirit or sis● souls are taken from their bodies will give unto the Lord neither praise nor righteousness 18 But the soul that is greatly vexed which goeth stooping and feeble and the eyes that sail and the hungry soul will give thee praise and righteousness O Lord. 19 * Dan. 9.18 Therefore we do not make our humble supplication before thee O Lord our God for the righteousness of our fathers and of our kings 20 For thou hast sent out thy wrath and indignation upon us as thou hast spoken by thy servants the prophets saying 21 * Jer. 27.11 Thus faith the Lord Bow down your shoulders to serve the king of Babylon so shall ye remain in the land that I gave unto your fathers 22 But if ye will not hear the voice of the Lord to serve the king of Babylon 23 I will cause to cease out of the cities of Juda and from without Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of joy the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride and the whole land shall be desolate of inhabitants 24 But we would not hearken unto thy voice to serve the king of Babylon therefore hast thou made good the words that thou spakest by thy servants the prophets namely that the bones of our kings and the bones of our fathers should be taken out of their places 25 And so they are cast out to the heat of the day and to the frost of the night and they died in great miseries by famine by sword and by pestilence 26 And the house which is called by thy name hast thou said waste as it is to be seen this day for the wickedness of the house of Israel and the house of Juda. 27 O Lord our God thou hast dealt with us after all thy goodness and according to all that great mercy of thine 28 As thou spakest by thy servant Moses in the day when thou didst command him to write thy law before the children of Israel saying 29 * Lev. 26.14 Deu. 28.15 If ye will not hear my voice surely † Gr. this great s●arm this very great multitude shall be turned into a small number among the nations where I will scatter them 30 For I knew that they would not hear me because it is a stiff-necked people but in the land of their captivities they shall ‖ Or come to themselves remember themselves 31 And shall know that I am the Lord their God for I will give them an heart and ears to hear 32 And they shall praise me in the land of their captivity and think upon my name 33 And return from their stiff † Gr. back neck and from their wicked deeds for they shall remember the way of their fathers which finned before the Lord. 34 And I will bring them again into the land which I promised with an oath unto their fathers Abraham Isaac and Jacob and they shall be lords of it and I will increase them and they shall not be diminished 35 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them to be their God and they shall be my people and I will no more drive my people of Israel out of the land that I have given them CHAP. III. 3 The rest of their prayer and confession contained in that book which Baruch wrote and sent to Jerusalem 30 Wisdom was shewed first to Jacob and was seen upon the earth O Lord almighty God of Israel the soul in anguish the troubled spirit crieth unto thee 2 Hear O Lord and have mercy for thou art merciful and have pity upon us because we have sinned before thee 3 For thou endurest for ever and we perish utterly 4 O Lord almighty thou God of Israel hear now the prayers of the dead Israelites and of their children which have sinned before thee and not hearkned unto the voice of thee their God for the which cause these plagues cleave unto us 5 Remember not the iniquities of our forefathers but think upon thy power and thy name now at this time 6 For thou art the Lord our God and thee O Lord will we praise 7 And for this cause thou hast put thy fear in our hearts to the intent that we should call upon thy name and praise thee in our captivity for * Deut. 30.1 we have called to minde all the iniquity of our forefathers that sinned before thee 8 Behold we are yet this day in our captivity where thou hast scattered us for a reproach and a curse and to be subject to payments according to all the iniquities of our fathers which departed from the Lord our God 9 Hear Israel the commandments of life give ear to understand wisdom 10 How hapneth it Israel that thou art in thine enemies land that thou art waxen old in a strange countrey that thou art defiled with the dead 11 That thou art counted with them that go down into the grave 12 Thou hast forsaken the fountain of wisdom 13 For if thou hadst walked in the way of God thou shouldest have dwelled in peace for ever 14 Learn where is wisdom where is strength where is understanding that thou mayest know also where is length of days and life where is the light of the eyes and peace 15 * Joh. 2● 12 20. Who hath found out her place or who hath come into her treasures 16 Where are the princes of the heathen become and such as ruled the beasts upon the earth 17 They that had their pastime with the fouls of the air and they that hoarded up silver and gold wherein men trust and made no end of their getting 18 For they that wrought in silver and were so careful and whose works are unsearchable 19 They are vanished and gone down to the grave and others are come up in their steads 20 Young men have seen light and dwelt upon the earth but the way of knowledge have they not known 21 Nor understood the paths thereof nor laid hold of it their children were far off from that way 22 It hath not been heard of in Chanaan neither hath it been seen in Theman 23 The
them out and stopped up the gates with stones 48 Whereupon Judas sent unto them in peaceable manner saying Let us pass through your land to go into our own countrey and none shall do you any hurt we will onely pass through on foot howbeit they would not open unto him 49 Wherefore Judas commanded a proclamation to be made throughout the host that every man should pitch his tent in the place where he was 50 So the souldiers pitched and assaulted the city all that day and all that night till at the length the city was delivered into his hands 51 Who then slew all the males with the edge of the sword and rased the city and took the spoils thereof and passed through the city over them that were slain 52 After this went they over Jordan into the great plain before Bethsan 53 And Judas gathered together those that ‖ Or went hindmost Num. 10.25 came behinde and ‖ Or comforted or incouraged exhorted the people all the way through till they came into the land of Judea 54 So they went up to mount Sion with joy and gladness where they offered ‖ peace-offerings Joseph Antiq. 12.12 burnt-offerings because not one of them were slain until they had returned in peace 55 Now what time as Judas and Jonathan were in the land of Galaad and Simon his brother in Galilee before Ptolemais 56 Joseph the son of Zacharias and Azarias captains of the garisons heard of the valiant acts and warlike deeds which they had done 57 Wherefore they said Let us also get us a name and go fight against the heathen that are round about us 58 So when they had given charge unto the garison that was with them they went towards Jamnia 59 Then came Gorgias and his men out of the city † Gr. to meet them in battel to fight against them 60 And so it was that Juseph and Azarias were put to flight and pursued unto the borders of Judea and there were slain that day of the people of Israel about two thousand men 61 Thus was there a great overthrow among the children of Israel because they were not obedient unto Judas and his brethren but thought to do some valiant act 62 Moreover these men came not of the seed of those by whose hand deliverance was given unto Israel 63 Howbeit the man Judas and his brethren were greatly renowned in the sight of all Israel and of all the heathen wheresoever their name was heard of 64 Insomuch as the people assembled unto them with joyful acclamations 65 Afterward went Judas forth with his brethren and sought against the children of Esau in the land toward the south where he smote Hebron and the † Gr. daughters towns thereof and pulled down the fortress of it and burnt the towres thereof round about 66 Form thence he removed to go into the land of † Gr. strangers the Philistines and passed through Samaria 67 At that time certain priests desirous to shew their valour were slain in battel for that they went out to fight unadvisedly 68 So Judas turned to Azotus in the land of the Philistines and when he had pulled down their altars and burnt their carved images with fire and spoiled their cities he returned into the land of Judea CHAP. VI. 8 Antiochus dieth 12 and confesseth that he is plagued for the wrong done to Jerusalem 20 Judas besiegeth those in the towre at Jerusalem 28 They procure Antiochus the younger to come into Judea 51 He besiegeth Sion 60 and maketh peace with Israel 61 yet overthroweth the wall of Sion ABout that time king Antiochus travelling through the high countreys heard say that Elymais in the countrey of Persia was a city greatly renowned for riches silver and gold 2 And that there was in it a very rich temple wherein were ‖ Or shields coverings of gold and breast-plates and ‖ Or. armour shields which Alexander son of Philip the Macedonian king who reigned first among the Grecians had left there 3 Wherefore he came and sought to take the city and to spoil it but he was not able because they of the city having had warning thereof 4 Rose up against him in battel so he fled and departed thence with great heaviness and returned to Babylon 5 Moreover there came one who brought him tidings into Persia that the armies which went against the sand of Judea were put to flight 6 And that Lysias who went forth first with a great power was driven away of the Jews and that they were made strong by the armour and power and store of spoils which they had gotten of the armies whom they had destroyed 7 Also that they had pulled down the abomination which he had set up upon the altar in Jerusalem and that they had compassed about the sanctuary with high walls as before and his city Bethsura 8 Now when the king heard these words he was astonished and sore moved whereupon he laid him down upon his bed and fell sick for grief because it had not belfn him as he looked for 9 And there he continued many days for his grief was ever more and more and he made account that he should die 10 Wherefore he called for all his friends and said unto them The sleep is gone from mine eyes and my heart faileth for very care 11 And I thought with my self Into what tribulation am I come and how great a floud of misery is it wherein now I am for I was bountiful and beloved in my power 12 But now I remember the evils that I did at Jerusalem and that I took all the vessels of gold and silver that were therein and sent to destroy the inhabitants of Judea without a cause 13 I perceive therefore that for this cause these troubles are come upon me and behold I perish through great grief in a strange land 14 Then called he for Philip one of his friends whom he made ruler over all his realm 15 And gave him the crown and his robe and his signet to the end ‖ Or he should take his son Antiochus to him he should bring up his son Antiochus and nourish him up for the kingdom 16 So king Antiochus died there in the hundred fourty and ninth year 17 Now when Lysias knew that the king was dead he set up Antiochus his son whom he had brought up being young to reign in his stead and his name he called Eupator 18 About this time they that were in the towre shut up the Israelites round about the sanctuary and sought always their hurt and the strengthning of the heathen 19 Wherefore Judas purposing to destroy them called all the people together to besiege them 20 So they came together and besieged them in the hundred and fiftieth year and he made mounts for shot against them and other engines 21 Howbeit certain of them that were besieged got forth unto whom some ungodly men of Israel joyned themselves 22 And

XVII 1 The transfiguration of Christ 14 He healeth the lunatick 22 foretelleth his own passion 24 and payeth tribute ANd * Mar. 9.2 Luk. 9.28 after six days Jesus taketh Peter James and John his brother and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart 2 And was transfigured before them and his face did shine as the sun and his raiment was white as the light 3 And behold there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him 4 Then answered Peter and said unto Jesus Lord it is good for us to be here if thou wilt let us make here three tabernacles one for thee and one for Moses and one for Elias 5 * 2 Pet. 1.17 While he yet spake behold a bright cloud overshadowed them and behold a voice out of the cloud which said This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased hear ye him 6 And when the disciples heard it they fell on their face and were sore afraid 7 And Jesus came touched them and said Arise and be not afraid 8 And when they had lift up their eyes they saw no man save Jesus onely 9 And as they came down from the mountain Jesus charged them saying Tell the vision to no man until the Son of man be risen again from the dead 10 And his disciples asked him saying * Ch. 11.14 Mar. 9.11 Why then say the scribes that Elias must first come 11 And Jesus answered and said unto them Elias truly shall first come and restore all things 12 But I say unto you that Elias is come already and they knew him not but have done unto him whatsoever they listed likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them 13 Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist 14 ¶ * Mar. 9.17 Luk. 9.38 And when they were come to the multitude there came to him a certain man kneeling down to him and saying 15 Lord have mercy on my son for he is lunatick and sore vexed for oft-times he falleth into the fire and oft into the water 16 And I brought him to thy disciples and they could not cure him 17 Then Jesus answered and said O faithless and perverse generation how long shall I be with you how long shall I suffer you bring him hither to me 18 And Jesus rebuked the devil and he departed out of him and the childe was cured from that very hour 19 Then came the disciples to Jesus apart and said Why could not we cast him out 20 And Jesus said unto them Because of your unbelief for verily I say unto you * Luk. 17.6 If ye have faith as a grain of mustard-seed ye shall say unto this mountain Remove hence to yonder place and it shall remove and nothing shall be unpossible unto you 21 Howbeit this kinde goeth not out but by prayer and fasting 22 ¶ * Ch. 20.17 Mar. 9.31 Luk. 9.44 And while they abode in Galilee Jesus said unto them The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men 23 And they shall kill him and the third day he shall be raised again and they were exceeding sorry 24 ¶ And when they were come to Capernaum they that received ‖ Called in the original didrachma being in value fifteen pence tribute money came to Peter and said Doth not your master pay tribute 25 He saith Yes And when he was come into the house Jesus prevented him saying What thinkest thou Simon of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute of their own children or of strangers 26 Peter saith unto him Of strangers Jesus saith unto him Then are the children free 27 Notwithstanding lest we should offend them go thou to the sea and cast an hook and take up the fish that first cometh up and when thou hast opened his mouth thou shalt finde ‖ Or a stater It is half an ounce of silver in value two shillings six pence after five shillings the ounce a piece of money that take and give unto them for me and thee CHAP. XVIII 1 Christ warneth his disciples to be humble and harmless 7 to avoid offences and not to despise the little ones 15 teacheth how we are to deal with our brethren when they offend us 21 and how oft to forgive them 23 which he setteth forth by a parable of the king that took account of his servants 32 and punished him who shewed no mercy to his fellow AT * Mar. 9. ●● Luk. 9.46 the same time cause the disciples unto Jesus saying Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven 2 And Jesus called a little childe unto him and set him in the midst of them 3 And said Verily I say unto you * Ch. 19.14 1 Cor. 14.20 Except ye be converted and become as little children ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven 4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little childe the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven 5 And whoso shall receive one such little childe in my name receiveth me 6 * Mar 9.42 Luke 17.1 2. But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me it were better for him that a milstone were hanged about his neck and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea 7 ¶ Wo unto the world because of offences for it must needs be that offences come but wo to that man by whom the offence cometh 8 * Ch. 5.30 Mar. 9.45 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee cut them off and cast them from thee it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed rather then having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire 9 And if thine eye offend thee pluck it out and cast it from thee it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye rather then having two eyes to be cast into hell-fire 10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones for I say unto you that in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven 11 * Luke 19.10 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost 12 * Luk. 15.4 How think ye if a man have an hundred sheep and one of them be gone astray doth he not leave the ninety and nine and goeth into the mountains and seeketh that which is gone astray 13 And if so be that he finde it verily I say unto you he rejoyceth more of that sheep then of the ninety and nine which went not astray 14 Even so it is not the will of your Father which is
kill the prisoners lest any of them should swim out and escape 43 But the centurion willing to save Paul kept them from their purpose and commanded that they which could swim should cast themselves first into the sea and get to land 44 And the rest some on boards and some on broken pieces of the ship And so it came to pass that they escaped all safe to land CHAP. XXVIII 1 Paul after his shipwrack is kindly entertained of the Barbarians 3 The viper on his hand hurteth him not 8 He healeth many diseases in the island 11 They depart towards Rome 17 He declareth to the Jews the cause of his coming 24 After his preaching some were perswaded and some beleeved not 30 Yet he preacheth there two years ANd when they were escaped then they knew that the island was called Melita 2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness for they kindled a fire and received us every one because of the present rain and because of the cold 3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire there came a viper out of the heat and fastned on his hand 4 And when the Barbarians law the venemous beast hang on his hand they said among themselves No doubt this man is a murderer whom though he hath escaped the sea yet vengeance suffereth not to live 5 And he shook off the beast into the fire and felt no harm 6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swoln or faln down dead suddenly but after they had looked a great while and saw no harm come to him they changed their minds and said that he was a God 7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island whose name was Publius who received us and lodged us three days courteously 8 And it came to pass that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloudy flux to whom Paul entred in and prayed and laid his hands on him and healed him 9 So when this was done others also which had diseases in the island came and were healed 10 Who also honoured us with many honours and when we departed they laded us with such things as were necessary 11 And after three moneths we departed in a ship of Alexandria which had wintred in the isle whose signe was Castor and Pollux 12 And landing at Syracuse we tarried there three days 13 And from thence we set a compass and came to Rhegium and after one day the south-wind blew and we came the next day to Puteo●● 14 Where we found brethren and were desired to tarry with them seven days and so we went toward Rome 15 And from thence when the brethren heard of us they came to meet us as far as Appii-forum and the Three taverns whom when Paul saw he thanked God and took courage 16 And when we came to Rome the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a souldier that kept him 17 And it came to pass that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together And when they were come together he said unto them Men and brethren though I have committed nothing against the people or customs of our fathers yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans 18 Who when they had examined me would have let me go because there was no cause of death in me 19 But when the Jews spake against it I was constrained to appeal unto Cesar not that I had ought to accuse my nation of 20 For this cause therefore have I called for you to see you and to speak with you because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain 21 And they said unto him We neither received letters out of Judea concerning thee neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee 22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest for as concerning this sect we know that every where it is spoken against 23 And when they had appointed him a day there came many to him into his lodging to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God perswading them concerning Jesus both out of the law of Moses and out of the prophets from morning till evening 24 And some beleeved the things which were spoken and some beleeved not 25 And when they agreed not among themselves they departed after that Paul had spoken one word Well spake the holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers 26 Saying * Isa 6.9 Mat. 13.14 Mar. 4.12 Luk. 8.10 Joh. 12.40 Rom. 11.8 Go unto this people and say Hearing ye shall hear and shall not understand and seeing ye shall see and not perceive 27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross and their ears are dull of hearing and their eyes have they closed lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and should be converted and I should heal them 28 Be it known therefore unto you that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles and that they will hear it 29 And when he had said these words the Jews departed and had great reasoning among themselves 30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house and received all that came in unto him 31 Preaching the kingdom of God and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence no man forbidding him ¶ The epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the ROMANS CHAP. IV. 1 The rest of Christians is attained by faith 12 The power of Gods word 14 By our high priest Jesus the Son of God subject to infirmities but not sin 16 we must and may go boldly to the throne of grace LEt us therefore fear lest a promise being left us of entring into his rest any of you should seem to come short of it 2 For unto us was the gospel preached as well as unto them but † Gr. the word of hearing the word preached did not profit them ‖ Or because they were not united by faith to not being mixed with faith in them that heard it 3 For we which have beleeved do enter into rest as he said * Psal 95.11 As I have sworn in my wrath If they shall enter into my rest although the works were finished from the foundation of the world 4 For he spake in a certain place of the seventh day on this wise * Gen. 2 2.
