a_o dish_n for_o their_o hearer_n yet_o they_o not_o lick_v their_o finger_n or_o taste_v of_o this_o spiritual_a food_n themselves_o as_o in_o the_o build_n of_o the_o ark_n there_o be_v many_o man_n build_v noah_n ark_n to_o save_v other_o that_o be_v drown_v themselves_o so_o many_o man_n may_v build_v a_o ark_n by_o preach_v the_o word_n and_o the_o way_n of_o god_n to_o save_v other_o man_n soul_n when_o they_o may_v be_v drown_v themselves_o hence_o it_o be_v the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o of_o star_n that_o fall_v from_o heaven_n many_o minister_n that_o seem_v godly_a minister_n like_o star_n in_o their_o generation_n yet_o they_o fall_v and_o become_v wicked_a and_o loose_a and_o i_o remember_v doctor_n pembleton_n a_o famous_a minister_n in_o the_o day_n of_o queen_n mary_n and_o a_o man_n who_o ministry_n have_v convert_v many_o christian_n yet_o at_o length_n he_o himself_o turn_v to_o be_v a_o papist_n now_o these_o christian_n do_v never_o misdoubt_v or_o suspect_v their_o conversion_n because_o the_o man_n that_o convert_v they_o be_v a_o bad_a man_n they_o may_v be_v good_a people_n though_o he_o be_v a_o bad_a minister_n so_o that_o this_o be_v no_o ground_n in_o the_o world_n though_o i_o confess_v it_o be_v not_o ordinary_a that_o god_n make_v wicked_a man_n mean_n of_o conversion_n but_o god_n ordinary_o crown_v the_o word_n most_o in_o the_o mouth_n of_o a_o godly_a minister_n yet_o sometime_o i_o say_v god_n may_v use_v a_o wicked_a man_n to_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o convert_v soul_n and_o i_o will_v give_v you_o these_o reason_n to_o prove_v that_o a_o wicked_a man_n may_v convert_v soul_n and_o that_o god_n tie_v not_o conversion_n only_o to_o a_o godly_a minister_n because_o first_o the_o efficacy_n of_o the_o word_n do_v not_o depend_v upon_o man_n but_o upon_o jesus_n christ_n and_o christ_n may_v make_v use_n of_o who_o he_o please_v second_o if_o only_o a_o good_a man_n can_v convert_v than_o this_o will_v follow_v that_o we_o can_v be_v as_o well_o sure_a of_o another_o man_n conversion_n as_o we_o be_v of_o our_o own_o which_o be_v a_o thing_n most_o untrue_a for_o if_o only_a a_o godly_a man_n can_v convert_v then_o if_o i_o be_v sure_a of_o my_o own_o conversion_n i_o be_v as_o well_o sure_a of_o his_o conversion_n that_o wrought_v upon_o i_o also_o which_o can_v be_v so_o that_o clear_o this_o shall_v lay_v no_o block_n in_o your_o way_n because_o you_o discern_v the_o minister_n that_o wrought_v upon_o you_o to_o be_v no_o good_a man_n see_v conversion_n be_v not_o tie_v only_o to_o a_o godly_a minister_n three_o a_o three_o ground_n from_o whence_o doubt_n arise_v in_o call_v one_o be_v from_o some_o seem_a defect_n they_o apprehend_v to_o be_v in_o the_o concomitant_n that_o accompany_v or_o in_o the_o effect_n that_o shall_v follow_v effectual_a calling_n and_o this_o make_v they_o fear_n that_o sure_o they_o be_v not_o effectual_o call_v i_o will_v name_v to_o you_o three_o or_o four_o first_o say_v a_o doubt_a christian_n i_o do_v hear_v in_o scripture_n what_o effect_n will_v follow_v and_o what_o will_v accompany_v a_o man_n effectual_o call_v and_o i_o find_v they_o not_o wrought_v in_o my_o soul_n as_o now_o first_o i_o apprehend_v that_o when_o a_o man_n be_v effectual_o call_v he_o shall_v be_v enable_v by_o god_n to_o call_v upon_o he_o in_o prayer_n i_o find_v in_o scripture_n 1_o cor._n 1.2_o that_o all_o that_o be_v call_v to_o be_v saint_n they_o shall_v call_v upon_o the_o lord_n in_o every_o place_n but_o alas_o woe_n be_v i_o i_o do_v not_o find_v this_o in_o my_o soul_n i_o find_v i_o have_v a_o dull_a dead_a listlesse_a unpray_v heart_n all_o the_o day_n of_o my_o life_n and_o therefore_o i_o doubt_v whether_o i_o be_o effectual_o call_v or_o no._n now_o to_o this_o i_o shall_v lay_v down_o three_o thing_n for_o answer_n first_o peradventure_o you_o judge_v that_o you_o be_v not_o enable_v to_o pray_v because_o you_o want_v expression_n in_o prayer_n though_o you_o have_v affection_n now_o if_o you_o judge_v your_o inability_n to_o pray_v because_o you_o want_v expression_n only_o you_o judge_v amiss_o because_o prayer_n be_v to_o be_v judge_v by_o the_o affection_n not_o by_o the_o expression_n expression_n they_o be_v but_o the_o breath_n of_o nature_n a_o natural_a voluble_a tongue_n may_v tumble_v out_o expression_n whereas_o affection_n in_o prayer_n they_o be_v the_o breath_n and_o fruit_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n therefore_o do_v not_o judge_v you_o can_v pray_v because_o you_o have_v not_o such_o fluent_a your_o request_n and_o sorrow_n out_o your_o supplication_n you_o pray_v best_o of_o all_o second_o you_o that_o judge_v your_o inability_n to_o pray_v and_o therefore_o think_v you_o be_v not_o call_v because_o you_o can_v call_v upon_o god_n i_o will_v say_v this_o unto_o you_o that_o the_o best_a of_o god_n child_n have_v find_v a_o great_a difference_n in_o their_o spirit_n in_o that_o they_o be_v exceed_o humble_v before_o god_n now_o for_o my_o part_n i_o never_o find_v this_o manner_n of_o god_n work_v in_o my_o soul_n i_o never_o find_v that_o i_o can_v see_v my_o sin_n clear_o or_o can_v be_v humble_v for_o they_o great_o i_o never_o find_v those_o humiliation_n and_o legal_a terror_n which_o i_o hear_v many_o man_n talk_v of_o and_o this_o make_v i_o doubt_n after_o this_o manner_n with_o some_o yet_o god_n be_v not_o tie_v and_o confine_v to_o one_o and_o the_o same_o way_n of_o work_v with_o all_o what_o if_o he_o come_v to_o you_o in_o a_o calm_a in_o conversation_n before_o their_o conversion_n and_o call_v but_o it_o be_v not_o god_n usual_a way_n to_o work_v thus_o upon_o christian_n who_o have_v be_v religious_o bring_v up_o from_o their_o youth_n it_o be_v not_o god_n way_n to_o dowse_v they_o into_o such_o a_o pit_n of_o horror_n and_o plunge_v they_o into_o such_o a_o depth_n of_o fear_n that_o have_v be_v of_o a_o fair_a and_o ingenuous_a and_o moral_a life_n before_o their_o call_n as_o you_o know_v it_o be_v with_o carpenter_n they_o give_v more_o blow_n to_o knotty_a timber_n than_o they_o will_v do_v to_o smooth_a and_o tender_a wood_n thus_o do_v god_n when_o he_o meet_v with_o a_o knotty_a sinner_n a_o wretched_a stouthearted_a sinner_n god_n must_v give_v he_o many_o blow_n by_o humiliation_n before_o he_o will_v be_v humble_v before_o he_o can_v bring_v he_o to_o be_v a_o serviceable_a piece_n in_o god_n building_n whereas_o christian_n of_o a_o mild_a and_o soft_a temper_n they_o shall_v have_v few_o blow_n and_o shall_v not_o have_v the_o terror_n of_o god_n stick_v so_o fast_o in_o their_o heart_n as_o other_o shall_v hence_o you_o read_v that_o phrase_n hos_fw-la 6.5_o say_v the_o lord_n i_o will_v hew_v they_o by_o my_o prophet_n etc._n etc._n god_n do_v hew_v some_o man_n hew_v they_o with_o judgement_n and_o hew_v they_o with_o terror_n yea_o but_o other_o that_o be_v not_o so_o loose_a as_o will_v hack_v and_o hew_v some_o man_n with_o terror_n and_o wrath_n but_o other_o he_o will_v draw_v with_o love_n and_o the_o cord_n of_o a_o man_n now_o suppose_v god_n have_v not_o hack_v and_o hew_v thou_o with_o judgement_n if_o god_n melt_v thou_o with_o love_a kindness_n and_o if_o god_n gain_v upon_o thy_o soul_n with_o mercy_n and_o with_o love_n and_o grace_n thou_o must_v not_o blame_v god_n thou_o must_v not_o confine_v god_n for_o this_o be_v god_n way_n of_o work_v sometime_o as_o well_o as_o by_o wrath_n god_n work_v upon_o some_o with_o wrath_n he_o will_v allure_v other_o with_o love_a kindness_n so_o that_o you_o have_v no_o cause_n or_o ground_n of_o fear_n that_o you_o be_v not_o effectual_o call_v because_o you_o apprehend_v some_o defect_n in_o the_o manner_n of_o your_o call_n because_o it_o be_v god_n usual_a way_n to_o plunge_v they_o in_o most_o humiliation_n and_o most_o terror_n that_o have_v be_v most_o wicked_a live_v man_n before_o their_o call_n and_o not_o so_o ordinary_o with_o man_n religious_o train_v up_o from_o their_o youth_n three_o god_n when_o he_o go_v to_o call_v a_o sinner_n to_o conversion_n he_o look_v upon_o the_o temper_n of_o those_o that_o be_v to_o be_v call_v and_o god_n see_v some_o man_n of_o a_o rugged_a temper_n that_o their_o temper_n will_v not_o be_v win_v but_o by_o wrath_n and_o by_o fire_n and_o by_o hell_n and_o by_o judgement_n and_o so_o it_o be_v like_a felix_n be_v his_o temper_n be_v such_o that_o nothing_o can_v convert_v he_o but_o wrath_n and_o judgement_n to_o come_v terrible_a doctrine_n some_o be_v of_o this_o temper_n that_o nothing_o but_o wrath_n and_o hel-fire_n can_v work_v upon_o they_o as_o child_n there_o be_v some_o that_o be_v of_o such_o soft_a and_o tender_a temper_n that_o the_o shake_n of_o a_o rod_n may_v do_v they_o good_a there_o be_v other_o child_n if_o a_o man_n shall_v whip_v they_o every_o day_n they_o will_v never_o leave_v their_o childish_a trick_n it_o be_v so_o with_o sinner_n god_n see_v some_o of_o a_o more_o tender_a and_o soft_a temper_n that_o love_n will_v gain_v upon_o they_o other_o be_v of_o a_o rugged_a disposition_n that_o nothing_o but_o wrath_n can_v affright_v they_o now_o god_n in_o the_o dispensation_n of_o his_o grace_n he_o observe_v their_o temper_n and_o if_o he_o see_v love_n will_v gain_v more_o upon_o they_o than_o wrath_n will_v do_v he_o will_v take_v that_o course_n but_o if_o god_n see_v nothing_o but_o wrath_n and_o fire_n and_o horror_n will_v do_v it_o than_o he_o will_v work_v that_o way_n this_o you_o read_v in_o the_o epistle_n of_o judas_n ver_fw-la 22_o 23._o on_o some_o say_v the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v compassion_n make_v a_o difference_n but_o other_o save_v with_o fear_n pull_v they_o out_o of_o the_o fire_n the_o meaning_n be_v this_o there_o be_v some_o that_o you_o must_v show_v tenderness_n and_o compassion_n to_o in_o call_v and_o work_v upon_o they_o they_o be_v of_o a_o tender_a temper_n but_o other_o there_o be_v that_o you_o must_v save_v with_o fear_n that_o be_v preach_v terrible_a sermon_n to_o they_o and_o fright_v they_o with_o hel-fire_n and_o judgement_n to_o come_v for_o god_n do_v observe_v the_o different_a temper_n in_o man_n and_o hereupon_o do_v proceed_v in_o different_a way_n of_o administration_n in_o work_v upon_o they_o now_o it_o may_v be_v thou_o that_o do_v thus_o complain_v thou_o never_o have_v these_o terror_n in_o thy_o soul_n and_o yet_o be_v effectual_o call_v it_o may_v be_v god_n see_v thy_o temper_n more_o to_o be_v win_v by_o kindness_n and_o more_o gain_v upon_o in_o a_o way_n of_o love_n therefore_o wrought_v upon_o thou_o this_o way_n god_n be_v not_o bind_v to_o one_o way_n and_o therefore_o we_o may_v just_o count_v they_o blame-worthy_a who_o preach_v only_o free_a grace_n and_o god_n love_n and_o so_o tie_v god_n to_o one_o method_n and_o they_o be_v to_o blame_v on_o the_o other_o side_n likewise_o if_o there_o be_v any_o such_o that_o preach_v only_a terror_n and_o wrath_n for_o god_n observe_v the_o temper_n of_o man_n disposition_n some_o to_o be_v knotty_a and_o some_o soft_a and_o according_o proceed_v in_o his_o way_n of_o work_v with_o they_o this_o ground_n therefore_o for_o your_o doubt_n be_v insufficient_a second_o a_o second_o ground_n that_o make_v man_n doubt_v of_o their_o effectual_a call_n be_v upon_o the_o apprehension_n of_o some_o seem_a defect_n that_o may_v be_v in_o the_o mean_n of_o their_o call_n as_o thus_o think_v they_o i_o have_v read_v in_o the_o word_n that_o it_o do_v please_v god_n to_o use_v preach_v as_o the_o ordinary_a mean_n to_o call_v and_o convert_v sinner_n to_o christ_n it_o please_v god_n by_o preach_v to_o save_v they_o that_o believe_v i_o read_v this_o also_o that_o faith_n come_v by_o hear_v now_o many_o a_o poor_a soul_n have_v this_o that_o gravel_v his_o conscience_n and_o trouble_v his_o spirit_n but_o alas_o i_o find_v a_o defect_n in_o this_o mean_n for_o my_o part_n i_o can_v say_v i_o be_v convert_v by_o hear_v a_o sermon_n that_o which_o do_v work_v upon_o i_o be_v some_o other_o mean_n one_o of_o these_o three_o either_o i_o be_v convert_v say_v one_o by_o live_v in_o a_o godly_a family_n among_o good_a christian_n see_v their_o example_n that_o first_o gain_v upon_o i_o or_o say_v another_o i_o be_v gain_v upon_o by_o read_v a_o chapter_n in_o the_o bible_n or_o in_o some_o good_a book_n

and_o that_o first_o wrought_v upon_o i_o or_o say_v a_o three_o it_o may_v be_v if_o it_o be_v the_o word_n it_o be_v the_o word_n preach_v by_o a_o wicked_a man_n that_o be_v now_o turn_v either_o erroneous_a in_o judgement_n or_o profane_v in_o practice_n and_o this_o occasion_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o jealousy_n the_o word_n preach_v by_o the_o mouth_n of_o a_o godly_a minister_n be_v god_n ordinary_a way_n but_o i_o be_v altogether_o out_o of_o this_o way_n and_o therefore_o this_o do_v make_v he_o suspect_v the_o truth_n of_o his_o effectual_a call_n now_o beloved_n i_o beseech_v you_o lend_v i_o your_o thought_n a_o little_a for_o i_o will_v fain_o make_v this_o doctrine_n as_o comfortable_a to_o every_o call_v one_o as_o i_o can_v i_o shall_v speak_v of_o all_o these_o in_o order_n and_o show_v you_o that_o put_v case_n either_o of_o these_o have_v be_v the_o mean_n of_o thy_o call_n yet_o thou_o have_v no_o reason_n to_o doubt_v of_o thy_o effectual_a call_n first_o thou_o suspect_v thy_o call_n because_o the_o mean_n have_v be_v say_v thou_o not_o by_o hear_v a_o sermon_n or_o the_o word_n preach_v but_o by_o live_v among_o good_a christian_n and_o see_v their_o example_n and_o their_o live_n thou_o come_v by_o this_o mean_n to_o love_v the_o way_n of_o god_n and_o this_o be_v the_o first_o mean_n that_o convert_v thou_o belove_a i_o doubt_v not_o but_o i_o speak_v to_o a_o great_a many_o that_o can_v say_v a_o sermon_n ever_o convert_v they_o but_o only_o that_o they_o be_v gain_v to_o god_n way_n to_o embrace_v the_o truth_n this_o way_n now_o what_o shall_v i_o say_v to_o such_o man_n as_o these_o why_o i_o will_v say_v thus_o much_o that_o though_o the_o lord_n do_v not_o use_v his_o word_n preach_v the_o ordinary_a mean_n of_o convert_v soul_n in_o call_v thou_o yet_o god_n be_v not_o tie_v and_o bind_v up_o to_o his_o word_n preach_v but_o he_o may_v use_v other_o mean_n to_o convert_v thy_o soul_n second_o and_o more_o particular_o that_o live_v among_o good_a people_n and_o see_v of_o their_o example_n both_o in_o life_n and_o worship_n we_o find_v in_o scripture_n to_o be_v a_o very_a efficacious_a mean_n oftentimes_o to_o convince_v sometime_o to_o convert_v and_o if_o you_o can_v find_v out_o this_o in_o scripture_n you_o may_v have_v abundance_n of_o comfort_n it_o have_v be_v a_o mean_n oftentimes_o to_o convince_v 1_o pet._n 3.16_o they_o shall_v be_v ashamed_a to_o speak_v evil_a of_o you_o while_o they_o behold_v your_o conversation_n in_o christ_n when_o they_o shall_v see_v that_o you_o live_v in_o christ_n and_o walk_v according_a to_o christ_n they_o shall_v be_v ashamed_a ashamed_a of_o what_o they_o have_v do_v and_o what_o they_o have_v speak_v it_o shall_v convince_v they_o so_o 1_o pet._n 2.15_o and_o the_o apostle_n when_o he_o speak_v of_o the_o orderly_a and_o regular_a manage_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n 1_o cor._n 14.24_o 25._o if_o there_o come_v a_o unbeliever_n among_o you_o &_o he_o see_v your_o order_n say_v he_o he_o shall_v fall_v down_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o you_o he_o shall_v be_v convince_v and_o shall_v say_v of_o a_o truth_n god_n be_v among_o you_o see_v this_o say_v the_o apostle_n godly_a man_n holy_a in_o their_o life_n and_o holy_a in_o their_o worship_n though_o he_o be_v a_o unbeliever_n he_o shall_v fall_v down_o and_o say_v of_o a_o truth_n god_n be_v among_o you_o that_o be_v by_o way_n of_o conviction_n nay_o further_o sometime_o god_n do_v bless_v the_o gracious_a life_n and_o blameless_a example_n of_o christian_n to_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o convert_v some_o when_o the_o gospel_n can_v do_v it_o and_o you_o will_v think_v this_o very_a comfortable_a can_v it_o be_v make_v good_a i_o will_v commend_v but_o one_o text_n of_o scripture_n to_o you_o to_o prove_v what_o a_o blessing_n it_o be_v to_o live_v in_o a_o good_a family_n where_o either_o husband_n or_o wife_n or_o any_o one_o in_o the_o family_n be_v godly_a 1_o pet._n 3.1_o wife_n be_v subject_a to_o your_o husband_n what_o then_o that_o your_o husband_n who_o be_v not_o win_v by_o the_o word_n may_v be_v win_v without_o the_o word_n while_o they_o behold_v the_o conversation_n of_o their_o wife_n a_o notable_a text_n there_o be_v many_o wicked_a husband_n that_o all_o the_o sermon_n they_o hear_v will_v not_o convert_v they_o yet_o the_o apostle_n tell_v they_o that_o if_o the_o wife_n do_v live_v a_o godly_a and_o holy_a life_n their_o life_n sometime_o shall_v be_v more_o efficacious_a to_o convert_v their_o husband_n than_o the_o word_n shall_v be_v and_o this_o beloved_n
