be_v most_o horrible_a rebellion_n and_o a_o great_a disgrace_n unto_o god_n three_o from_o this_o property_n of_o the_o law_n we_o may_v observe_v that_o it_o be_v not_o likely_a that_o any_o whole_a book_n of_o canonical_a scripture_n be_v lose_v for_o not_o one_o sentence_n of_o the_o law_n shall_v pass_v till_o all_o be_v fulfil_v much_o less_o than_o can_v whole_a book_n perish_v sundry_a man_n do_v think_v that_o whole_a book_n be_v lose_v but_o that_o opinion_n call_v into_o question_n the_o fidelity_n of_o the_o church_n and_o god_n own_o providence_n in_o preserve_v his_o word_n man_n heart_n and_o be_v keep_v for_o ever_o four_o this_o immutabilitie_n of_o the_o law_n contain_v a_o matter_n of_o great_a terror_n &_o woe_n unto_o all_o impenitent_a sinner_n for_o howsoever_o cause_n shipwreck_n have_v see_v the_o true_a meaning_n of_o this_o law_n expound_v by_o christ_n let_v es_fw-mi here_o further_o observe_v how_o he_o restore_v the_o true_a use_n thereof_o we_o must_v not_o think_v that_o he_o do_v only_o here_o intend_v the_o rectify_v of_o our_o judgement_n for_o understanding_n and_o not_o also_o strike_v at_o the_o reformation_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o life_n for_o practice_v touch_v the_o use_n of_o this_o law_n therefore_o law_n christ_n here_o teach_v we_o two_o thing_n first_o to_o descend_v into_o our_o own_o heart_n and_o there_o to_o search_v how_o we_o have_v break_v this_o commandment_n heart_n as_o whether_o we_o have_v bear_v in_o our_o heart_n any_o malice_n against_o our_o brother_n and_o whether_o we_o have_v express_v the_o rash_a anger_n of_o our_o heart_n by_o speech_n or_o gesture_n or_o have_v any_o way_n wrong_v he_o by_o revile_v term_n or_o other_o injury_n against_o his_o life_n if_o we_o have_v christ_n tell_v we_o we_o be_v murderer_n second_o christ_n set_v down_o the_o curse_n to_o every_o degree_n of_o murder_n teach_v we_o upon_o due_a examination_n of_o our_o heart_n fuide_v our_o ourselves_o self_n guilty_a in_o any_o degree_n to_o cast_v down_o ourselves_o before_o the_o lord_n to_o accuse_v and_o condemn_v ourselves_o cry_v out_o that_o all_o shame_n and_o confusion_n belong_v unto_o we_o this_o we_o must_v do_v that_o by_o the_o view_n of_o our_o misery_n we_o may_v be_v move_v more_o earnest_o to_o sue_v for_o mercy_n and_o indeed_o if_o we_o examine_v our_o heart_n and_o our_o behaviour_n thorough_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o we_o be_v all_o murderer_n for_o though_o we_o may_v be_v free_a from_o actual_a kill_n yet_o our_o conscience_n will_v tell_v we_o that_o the_o motion_n of_o wrath_n and_o malice_n and_o the_o sign_n of_o unaduised_a anger_n have_v break_v forth_o both_o in_o our_o word_n and_o gesture_n for_o who_o can_v say_v he_o never_o snuff_v at_o a_o other_o by_o way_n of_o contempt_n or_o dislike_n who_o can_v clear_v himself_o from_o deride_v and_o disgrace_v other_o now_o these_o thing_n and_o such_o like_a make_v we_o guilty_a of_o sin_n against_o the_o law_n and_o so_o subject_a to_o the_o wrath_n and_o curse_n of_o god_n which_o must_v needs_o be_v fulfil_v though_o heaven_n and_o earth_n shall_v pass_v away_o this_o
finish_v till_o death_n so_o than_o it_o be_v plain_a there_o be_v a_o perfection_n in_o the_o child_n of_o god_n though_o join_v with_o much_o weakness_n even_o in_o this_o life_n his_o nature_n be_v perfect_a be_v renew_v in_o soul_n to_o sound_a judgement_n to_o a_o honest_a heart_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n his_o action_n be_v perfect_a in_o god_n acceptance_n through_o christ_n while_o he_o bewail_v his_o imperfection_n and_o endeavour_n sincere_o to_o please_v god_n in_o all_o thing_n this_o be_v that_o which_o christ_n enjoin_v to_o his_o disciple_n this_o we_o must_v labour_v for_o if_o we_o will_v resemble_v our_o heavenly_a father_n we_o can_v get_v no_o high_o in_o this_o life_n but_o let_v we_o attain_v to_o this_o and_o in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v we_o shall_v be_v perfect_a in_o degree_n for_o then_o our_o regeneration_n shall_v be_v accomplish_v but_o herein_o man_n fail_v and_o come_v short_a of_o their_o duty_n as_o first_o all_o those_o 1_o perfection_n that_o spend_v their_o strength_n and_o wit_n to_o get_v the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n these_o man_n little_a think_v of_o this_o perfection_n which_o the_o lord_n require_v in_o his_o child_n it_o may_v be_v they_o will_v hear_v the_o word_n but_o yet_o their_o heart_n be_v so_o glue_v to_o the_o earth_n &_o earthly_a thing_n that_o they_o savour_v not_o of_o regeneration_n they_o know_v not_o what_o it_o mean_v but_o if_o they_o will_v be_v god_n child_n they_o must_v follow_v jehosaphat_n 2._o chro._n 17._o 6._o who_o lift_v up_o his_o heart_n to_o the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n for_o that_o be_v the_o mean_n to_o come_v to_o perfection_n second_o those_o also_o be_v reprove_v that_o content_n themselves_o with_o a_o 2_o small_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n and_o do_v not_o strive_v after_o perfection_n as_o christ_n require_v how_o can_v they_o have_v a_o sound_a judgement_n which_o study_v not_o to_o know_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o scripture_n three_o that_o general_a want_n of_o christian_a perfection_n be_v here_o reprove_v 3_o when_o man_n content_v themselves_o to_o yield_v respect_n to_o the_o outward_a duty_n perfection_n of_o the_o first_o table_n that_o concern_v god_n worship_n and_o yet_o neglect_v the_o duty_n of_o the_o second_o table_n that_o concern_v their_o brethren_n in_o general_a and_o pertain_v to_o their_o function_n and_o calling_n in_o particular_a this_o be_v a_o common_a fault_n in_o magistrate_n minister_n parent_n master_n servant_n etc._n etc._n they_o will_v be_v christian_n in_o the_o church_n but_o they_o neglect_v to_o show_v the_o power_n thereof_o in_o their_o calling_n but_o this_o be_v a_o grievous_a want_n of_o sincerity_n which_o make_v they_o far_o unlike_o their_o heavenly_a father_n for_o he_o be_v ever_o like_o himself_o and_o therefore_o look_v what_o man_n profess_v in_o god_n worship_n that_o must_v they_o practice_v in_o their_o calling_n a_o magistrate_n must_v be_v a_o christian_a upon_o the_o bench_n as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o church_n in_o the_o administration_n of_o justice_n as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o congregation_n and_o so_o must_v minister_n master_n and_o all_o estate_n god_n allow_v not_o of_o their_o service_n in_o the_o church_n that_o serve_v their_o wicked_a lust_n at_o home_n jerem._n 7._o 9_o 10._o god_n sacrifice_n under_o the_o law_n must_v be_v whole_a and_o sound_a not_o halt_v and_o lame_a or_o maim_v and_o such_o shall_v our_o obedience_n be_v under_o the_o gospel_n with_o sincere_a respect_n to_o all_o god_n commandment_n it_o profit_v herod_n little_a to_o hear_v john_n glad_o and_o to_o do_v many_o thing_n so_o long_o as_o he_o keep_v his_o brother_n wife_n nor_o judas_n to_o follow_v christ_n while_o his_o heart_n be_v father_n which_o be_v in_o heaven_n in_o the_o former_a chapter_n the_o evangelist_n have_v faithful_o record_v three_o part_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n sermon_n and_o here_o he_o begin_v the_o four_o which_o serman_n reach_v to_o the_o nineteen_o verse_n of_o this_o chapter_n wherein_o our_o saviour_n christ_n go_v about_o to_o reform_v his_o hearer_n of_o all_o abuse_n in_o do_v good_a take_v heed_n of_o be_v seduce_v by_o popish_a teacher_n who_o say_v there_o be_v two_o kind_n of_o scripture_n inward_a and_o outward_a inward_a scripture_n be_v a_o consent_n of_o doctrine_n write_v set_v up_o the_o opinion_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n make_v scripture_n what_o themselves_o will_v we_o must_v therefore_o hold_v
this_o i_o note_v because_o they_o begin_v to_o be_v in_o disgrace_n with_o many_o and_o corrupt_v popish_a writer_n be_v far_o better_o account_v of_o three_o if_o any_o among_o we_o doubt_v of_o any_o point_n in_o religion_n let_v he_o do_v religion_n these_o two_o thing_n for_o his_o resolution_n which_o be_v the_o ordinary_a mean_n to_o know_v the_o truth_n first_o let_v he_o search_v the_o holy_a scripture_n diligent_o not_o by_o private_a study_n only_o but_o by_o conference_n with_o the_o godly_a second_o let_v he_o in_o true_a humility_n of_o heart_n pray_v unto_o god_n for_o the_o illumination_n of_o his_o spirit_n whereby_o he_o may_v in_o mind_n right_o conceive_v of_o the_o truth_n embrace_v it_o by_o faith_n in_o his_o heart_n and_o honour_v it_o by_o obedience_n in_o his_o life_n thus_o do_v constant_o and_o in_o sincerity_n he_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o be_v preserve_v from_o error_n both_o final_a and_o fundamental_a and_o in_o due_a time_n shall_v know_v the_o curious_a art_n namely_o bring_v 19_o they_o out_o and_o burn_v they_o then_o take_v such_o delight_n in_o they_o albeit_o this_o must_v be_v grant_v it_o be_v both_o lawful_a and_o necessary_a for_o the_o defence_n of_o the_o truth_n that_o man_n of_o sound_a judgement_n and_o piety_n do_v labour_n in_o they_o second_o hence_o also_o it_o may_v appear_v that_o it_o can_v be_v but_o a_o great_a dangerous_a hindrance_n to_o true_a religion_n that_o heretical_a book_n may_v be_v public_o sell_v to_o any_o one_o that_o will_v buy_v they_o without_o due_a consideration_n whether_o the_o party_n have_v gift_n to_o discern_v of_o truth_n from_o falsehood_n in_o the_o popish_a church_n they_o be_v more_o careful_a they_o permit_v not_o a_o man_n to_o read_v a_o heretic_n book_n as_o they_o call_v we_o protestant_n without_o leave_n and_o that_o under_o a_o great_a penalty_n which_o be_v severe_o inflict_v upon_o offender_n that_o way_n v._o instruct._n this_o commandment_n also_o show_v that_o it_o be_v not_o lawful_a unlawful_a to_o grant_v to_o any_o man_n or_o to_o any_o people_n the_o liberty_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n in_o the_o matter_n of_o religion_n permit_v they_o to_o profess_v what_o religion_n they_o will_v for_o how_o shall_v false_a prophet_n be_v avoid_v when_o every_o man_n may_v free_o profess_v what_o he_o will_v in_o religion_n all_o governor_n
