lunae_fw-la 1._o die_v feb._n 1696._o ordered_n that_o the_o thanks_o of_o this_o house_n be_v give_v to_o doctor_n lancaster_n for_o the_o sermon_n by_o he_o preach_v before_o they_o upon_o saturday_n last_o at_o st._n margaret_n westminster_n and_o that_o he_o be_v desire_v to_o print_v the_o same_o and_o that_o mr_n robert_n berty_n and_o mr_n drake_n do_v acquaint_v he_o therewith_o paul_n jodrell_n cl._n dom._n com._n a_o sermon_n preach_v before_o the_o honourable_a house_n of_o commons_o at_o st_n margaret_n westminster_n on_o the_o 30_o of_o january_n 1696_o 7._o by_o preach_v before_o the_o honourable_a house_n of_o commons_o lament_n v._o 16._o the_o crown_n be_v fall_v from_o our_o head_n woe_n to_o we_o for_o we_o have_v sin_v the_o word_n be_v part_n of_o jeremy_n lamentation_n and_o if_o we_o look_v into_o 2_o chron._n 35.25_o we_o shall_v find_v that_o this_o lamentation_n be_v for_o the_o death_n of_o king_n josiah_n the_o word_n of_o that_o place_n in_o chronicle_n be_v these_o and_o jeremiah_n lament_v for_o josiah_n and_o all_o the_o sing_a man_n and_o sing_a woman_n speak_v of_o josiah_n in_o their_o lamentation_n to_o this_o day_n and_o make_v they_o a_o ordinance_n in_o israel_n and_o behold_v they_o be_v write_v in_o the_o lamentation_n from_o these_o word_n i_o conclude_v that_o the_o prophet_n in_o this_o place_n speak_v of_o the_o downfall_n of_o the_o crown_n do_v it_o with_o relation_n to_o the_o death_n of_o that_o great_a and_o good_a king_n the_o chronicle_n witness_n that_o jeremy_n make_v lamentation_n for_o he_o and_o that_o it_o be_v contain_v and_o write_v in_o the_o lamentation_n and_o since_o these_o word_n of_o the_o prophet_n do_v so_o well_o express_v it_o we_o must_v believe_v that_o josiah_n downfall_n be_v the_o occasion_n of_o they_o he_o be_v a_o pattern_n for_o all_o prince_n and_o the_o mourn_v which_o be_v to_o be_v in_o judah_n and_o jerusalem_n for_o he_o be_v to_o be_v a_o pattern_n for_o all_o lamentation_n the_o prophet_n zechary_n when_o he_o foretell_v the_o passion_n and_o die_v of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n upon_o the_o cross_n say_v there_o shall_v be_v such_o mourning_n for_o he_o as_o be_v for_o josiah_n that_o they_o shall_v look_v on_o he_o who_o they_o have_v pierce_v 12.10_o zech._n 12.10_o which_o s._n john_n c._n 19_o explain_v and_o apply_v to_o our_o saviour_n expose_v and_o wound_v and_o bleed_v upon_o the_o cross_n and_o then_o the_o prophet_n add_v v._o 11._o that_o in_o that_o day_n there_o shall_v be_v great_a mourning_n in_o jerusalem_n as_o the_o mourning_n of_o hadadrimmon_n in_o the_o valley_n of_o megiddon_n the_o lamentation_n for_o our_o lord_n it_o be_v here_o foretell_v shall_v be_v as_o great_a as_o that_o for_o josiah_n who_o be_v slay_v in_o the_o field_n of_o battle_n at_o megiddo_n which_o seem_v to_o have_v be_v the_o great_a mourn_v that_o be_v ever_o know_v in_o israel_n the_o word_n than_o i_o have_v sufficient_o explain_v by_o show_v the_o occasion_n of_o they_o and_o the_o same_o history_n say_v that_o hereupon_o a_o ordinance_n be_v make_v in_o israel_n and_o the_o book_n which_o be_v write_v many_o year_n at_o least_o some_o reign_v after_o josiah_n death_n say_v the_o observation_n of_o that_o ordinance_n be_v continue_v a_o very_a long_a time_n they_o speak_v of_o he_o in_o their_o lamentation_n to_o this_o day_n so_o that_o we_o may_v conclude_v thus_o much_o from_o that_o history_n that_o when_o josiah_n be_v slay_v there_o be_v in_o israel_n a_o act_n a_o ordinance_n a_o law_n make_v for_o a_o solemn_a yearly_a mourn_v for_o ever_o we_o see_v then_o we_o be_v now_o assemble_v by_o a_o law_n make_v after_o a_o precedent_n of_o great_a antiquity_n and_o i_o may_v add_v of_o much_o great_a authority_n and_o since_o providence_n have_v for_o our_o sin_n give_v we_o the_o like_a occasion_n let_v we_o implore_v his_o merciful_a acceptance_n of_o the_o like_o mourn_v and_o humiliation_n and_o of_o our_o service_n and_o sorrow_n in_o obedience_n to_o the_o law_n in_o our_o own_o nation_n make_v after_o the_o example_n of_o israel_n and_o of_o this_o divine_a ordinance_n wherein_o the_o wisdom_n of_o heaven_n be_v most_o immediate_o concern_v the_o civil_a magistrate_n may_v by_o what_o rule_v he_o please_v inquire_v after_o person_n disaffect_v and_o uneasy_a to_o the_o government_n but_o methinks_v it_o be_v very_o natural_a to_o suspect_v all_o such_o person_n as_o dangerous_a to_o king_n and_o state_n who_o rejoice_v and_o seem_v to_o triumph_v at_o the_o fall_n of_o one_o of_o the_o best_a of_o king_n and_o at_o the_o promotion_n of_o the_o worst_a of_o man_n and_o murderer_n into_o his_o place_n it_o can_v be_v safe_a laugh_n when_o a_o nation_n upon_o so_o good_a reason_n be_v command_v to_o be_v all_o in_o tear_n not_o only_o lest_o god_n shall_v be_v angry_a who_o judgement_n be_v thereby_o despise_v but_o also_o lest_o that_o man_n who_o can_v be_v merry_a upon_o so_o sad_a and_o lamentable_a a_o occasion_n shall_v be_v think_v please_v with_o the_o public_a sorrow_n and_o that_o common_a calamity_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o it_o every_o man_n experience_n tell_v he_o thus_o much_o that_o what_o we_o be_v glad_a of_o we_o wish_v may_v happen_v frequent_o and_o that_o occasion_n and_o matter_n of_o joy_n can_v never_o come_v too_o often_o so_o that_o shall_v the_o anniversary_n for_o one_o prince_n murder_n be_v to_o any_o man_n a_o day_n of_o joy_n i_o shall_v suspect_v that_o man_n wish_v more_o such_o day_n as_o these_o and_o that_o we_o may_v have_v many_o such_o reason_n for_o jeremy_n to_o lament_v on_o the_o other_o hand_n what_o a_o man_n sorrow_n and_o grieve_v and_o mourn_v for_o he_o wish_n may_v never_o be_v repeat_v and_o that_o he_o may_v never_o hear_v of_o the_o like_a again_o so_o that_o day_n of_o humiliation_n as_o they_o have_v sometime_o be_v serviceable_a to_o hypocrisy_n may_v serve_v for_o politic_a end_n and_o purpose_n as_o well_o as_o religious_a to_o secure_a prince_n from_o all_o attempt_n of_o cruel_a and_o bloody_a man_n by_o create_v a_o aversion_n to_o such_o barbarous_a practice_n upon_o they_o in_o the_o mind_n of_o all_o men._n it_o be_v very_o natural_a for_o sorrow_n and_o shame_n to_o fill_v the_o mind_n with_o horror_n and_o dislike_n of_o all_o event_n or_o action_n which_o cause_v sorrow_n to_o possess_v the_o mind_n with_o a_o principle_n and_o habitual_a desire_n to_o prevent_v such_o action_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v and_o all_o the_o effort_n and_o endeavour_n which_o be_v make_v towards_o they_o the_o jew_n have_v therefore_o very_o good_a reason_n to_o make_v a_o ordinance_n for_o a_o yearly_a mourn_v for_o josiah_n as_o all_o other_o state_n and_o government_n have_v upon_o the_o like_a occasion_n because_o sorrow_n and_o affliction_n for_o the_o untimely_a death_n of_o one_o king_n dispose_v the_o mind_n to_o care_n and_o vigilance_n over_o the_o life_n and_o welfare_n of_o another_o and_o i_o think_v common_a charity_n will_v teach_v we_o to_o believe_v that_o he_o who_o now_o do_v his_o dury_n to_o god_n and_o be_v just_a to_o the_o bless_a memory_n of_o this_o day_n martyr_n can_v do_v no_o injury_n to_o the_o state_n or_o person_n of_o his_o present_a successor_n nor_o give_v way_n to_o so_o much_o as_o a_o thought_n which_o may_v prejudice_v the_o interest_n of_o that_o brave_a man_n who_o through_o so_o many_o peril_n have_v assert_v the_o religion_n and_o honour_n of_o the_o english_a nation_n we_o may_v reckon_v upon_o two_o sort_n of_o man_n who_o be_v avow_v enemy_n to_o our_o present_a constitution_n the_o first_o be_v those_o little_a wretch_n who_o yet_o dare_v meditate_v great_a and_o bloody_a villainy_n and_o endeavour_v the_o confusion_n of_o their_o own_o native_a country_n by_o assassin_n and_o bring_v in_o upon_o we_o a_o foreign_a power_n these_o be_v not_o to_o be_v neglect_v because_o little_a since_o it_o have_v often_o be_v in_o the_o power_n of_o wretch_n and_o small_a thing_n to_o do_v great_a mischief_n but_o second_o there_o be_v other_o enemy_n who_o be_v far_o more_o powerful_a and_o who_o have_v hit_v upon_o the_o only_a stratagem_n in_o the_o world_n which_o can_v undo_v we_o such_o be_v they_o who_o endeavour_n to_o make_v god_n our_o enemy_n and_o to_o rob_v we_o of_o his_o care_n and_o favour_n to_o who_o alone_o we_o owe_v our_o protection_n and_o peace_n when_o the_o almighty_a thunder_n and_o when_o his_o judgement_n be_v abroad_o he_o expect_v we_o shall_v tremble_v and_o be_v afraid_a and_o not_o live_v as_o if_o we_o either_o
