testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v the_o only_a mean_n able_a undoubted_o to_o persuade_v the_o conscience_n that_o the_o scripture_n be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n if_o no_o man_n can_v say_v that_o knowledge_n and_o faith_n by_o experience_n and_o observation_n 1._o of_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n in_o the_o church_n for_o when_o the_o word_n be_v preach_v they_o perceive_v what_o be_v teach_v and_o can_v but_o yield_v assent_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o 2._o by_o see_v the_o miracle_n of_o christ_n live_v upon_o earth_n 3._o they_o do_v also_o perceive_v what_o be_v write_v both_o in_o the_o scripture_n themselves_o and_o in_o other_o good_a book_n by_o which_o mean_n they_o come_v to_o increase_v their_o knowledge_n nevertheless_o though_o they_o have_v this_o historical_a faith_n yet_o they_o come_v far_o short_a of_o true_a faith_n because_o they_o can_v apply_v those_o thing_n which_o they_o know_v to_o themselves_o for_o any_o good_a or_o comfort_n to_o be_v keep_v well_o enough_o if_o man_n and_o woman_n come_v to_o church_n and_o be_v present_a at_o public_a prayer_n and_o at_o the_o sermon_n though_o they_o spend_v the_o rest_n of_o the_o day_n either_o idle_o or_o profane_o that_o the_o sabbath_n be_v well_o enough_o sanctify_v by_o bare_a read_n of_o prayer_n and_o so_o much_o preach_v be_v needless_a that_o it_o be_v no_o hurt_n upon_o the_o sabbath_n to_o use_v sport_n and_o pastime_n because_o many_o do_v worse_o that_o it_o be_v lawful_a to_o swear_v in_o common_a talk_n to_o that_o which_o be_v true_a that_o in_o religion_n it_o of_o it_o how_o far_o be_v they_o from_o the_o practice_n of_o christ_n who_o will_v not_o have_v so_o much_o as_o the_o break_a piece_n of_o bread_n and_o fish_n to_o be_v lose_v or_o perish_v what_o will_v they_o answer_v to_o christ_n at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n for_o abuse_v and_o waste_v so_o much_o meat_n and_o drink_n by_o gluttony_n and_o drunkenness_n well_o let_v they_o in_o time_n repent_v of_o this_o grievous_a sin_n etc._n etc._n other_o there_o be_v also_o here_o reprove_v who_o if_o they_o have_v enough_o mean_n for_o present_a to_o maintain_v they_o meat_n and_o drink_n drink_v apparel_n money_n etc._n etc._n in_o lavish_a manner_n they_o care_v not_o how_o such_o prodigal_a waste_n beside_o that_o it_o be_v offensive_a to_o god_n be_v also_o a_o mean_n to_o bring_v many_o that_o have_v good_a estate_n in_o the_o world_n to_o beggary_n and_o want_n and_o so_o to_o great_a misery_n quest_n quest_n may_v we_o not_o do_v with_o our_o own_o as_o we_o listen_v answ_n answ_n in_o no_o wise_a god_n have_v make_v we_o steward_n not_o absolute_a lord_n of_o his_o blessing_n that_o we_o shall_v use_v and_o employ_v they_o to_o his_o glory_n and_o to_o the_o good_a do_v very_o near_o concern_v they_o to_o take_v special_a notice_n of_o not_o that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n in_o itself_o have_v need_n of_o man_n testimony_n or_o commendation_n for_o it_o have_v authority_n from_o god_n alone_o who_o word_n it_o be_v but_o because_o the_o testimony_n and_o commendation_n of_o man_n especial_o such_o as_o be_v of_o eminent_a gift_n and_o place_n in_o the_o their_o superstitious_a will-worship_n be_v further_o set_v out_o by_o the_o adjunct_n or_o property_n of_o it_o in_o that_o they_o be_v say_v to_o worship_n god_n in_o vain_a this_o people_n this_n be_v literal_o to_o be_v understand_v of_o those_o ancient_a jew_n which_o live_v in_o the_o prophet_n esay_n time_n but_o prophetical_o and_o by_o way_n of_o application_n it_o be_v to_o be_v refer_v because_o such_o as_o serve_v god_n aright_o do_v thereby_o honour_v he_o he_o accept_v that_o service_n as_o a_o honour_n do_v unto_o he_o yet_o here_o we_o must_v not_o understand_v any_o true_a and_o upright_o serve_v or_o honour_v of_o god_n but_o such_o as_o be_v in_o show_n and_o appearance_n only_o q._n d._n this_o people_n seem_v to_o honour_v i_o or_o make_v great_a show_n etc._n etc._n with_o lip_n that_o be_v with_o the_o body_n and_o outward_a man_n it_o be_v speak_v by_o the_o figure_n synecdoche_n whereby_o a_o part_n be_v put_v for_o the_o whole_a the_o lip_n name_v for_o all_o part_n of_o the_o body_n with_o which_o service_n be_v outward_o perform_v unto_o god_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o the_o principal_a part_n of_o outward_a worship_n be_v perform_v with_o the_o mouth_n and_o li_n quest_n quest_n do_v the_o prophet_n here_o condemn_v the_o outward_a serve_v of_o god_n with_o the_o body_n answ_n answ_n not_o simple_o or_o absolute_o for_o god_n man_n but_o their_o inner-man_n be_v far_o estrange_v from_o he_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o the_o hypocritical_a jew_n in_o the_o prophet_n esay_n time_n as_o he_o just_o complain_v so_o ezek._n 33._o 31._o they_o be_v forward_o to_o come_v and_o sit_v before_o the_o prophet_n and_o to_o hear_v he_o with_o outward_a ear_n but_o their_o heart_n go_v after_o covetousness_n so_o the_o scribe_n and_o
