rule_n of_o the_o scripture_n but_o also_o such_o as_o have_v be_v and_o be_v practise_v and_o follow_v so_o far_o forth_o as_o of_o sinful_a flesh_n may_v be_v look_v for_o both_o of_o minister_n and_o people_n and_o approve_v of_o those_o who_o have_v excel_v &_o go_v before_o many_o in_o both_o and_o although_o i_o deny_v not_o but_o that_o many_o thing_n may_v have_v be_v far_o better_a return_v the_o last_o reason_n move_v i_o to_o take_v this_o work_n in_o hand_n be_v that_o they_o who_o have_v enjoy_v my_o ministry_n above_o these_o twenty_o year_n may_v have_v i_o as_o many_o of_o they_o have_v oft_o desire_v after_o a_o sort_n put_v they_o in_o remembrance_n of_o that_o which_o i_o have_v teach_v they_o in_o my_o life_n time_n many_o year_n after_o i_o shall_v be_v take_v from_o among_o they_o this_o shall_v suffice_v to_o be_v speak_v of_o my_o intent_n and_o purpose_n in_o this_o treatise_n with_o the_o reason_n thereof_o now_o it_o remain_v further_a to_o acquaint_v and_o how_o they_o be_v to_o carry_v themselves_o both_o towards_o god_n and_o man_n which_o i_o think_v expedient_a to_o lay_v forth_o as_o clear_o as_o i_o can_v and_o in_o some_o ample_a manner_n for_o the_o more_o full_a satisfy_n of_o the_o ignorant_a sort_n from_o these_o two_o all_o the_o other_o point_v handle_v in_o this_o book_n do_v arise_v treatise_n therefore_o in_o the_o three_o i_o will_v show_v what_o be_v the_o mean_n whereby_o this_o life_n may_v be_v maintain_v and_o how_o the_o believer_n shall_v use_v the_o same_o to_o the_o end_n that_o this_o whole_a and_o great_a work_n of_o worship_v &_o serve_v god_n may_v not_o be_v take_v for_o a_o bare_a matter_n of_o knowledge_n as_o the_o most_o do_v make_v it_o or_o which_o be_v little_a better_o for_o a_o serve_v of_o god_n against_o the_o practise_n of_o the_o daily_a direction_n shall_v be_v sufficient_o answer_v that_o thereby_o the_o truth_n appear_v more_o clear_o many_o such_o as_o desire_v unfeigned_o to_o do_v well_o and_o yet_o have_v not_o learned_a to_o guide_v themselves_o by_o any_o plain_a direction_n out_o of_o the_o scripture_n may_v have_v this_o as_o a_o help_n unto_o they_o to_o see_v that_o which_o the_o scripture_n have_v reveal_v hereof_o all_o which_o though_o i_o direct_v not_o this_o work_n to_o the_o unreformed_a may_v be_v in_o stead_n of_o a_o exhortation_n unto_o all_o loose_a benefit_v the_o plain_a and_o simple_a such_o as_o many_o of_o they_o be_v among_o who_o i_o have_v preach_v the_o same_o as_o well_o as_o to_o bring_v the_o wise_a and_o more_o learned_a sort_n acquaint_v with_o the_o practice_n of_o it_o therefore_o i_o know_v they_o shall_v have_v need_n thereof_o now_o when_o they_o shall_v understand_v it_o in_o some_o good_a sort_n let_v they_o weigh_v and_o consider_v how_o far_o forth_o they_o have_v have_v use_n of_o it_o heretofore_o as_o whether_o they_o have_v according_a to_o the_o first_o part_n of_o this_o book_n by_o the_o ministry_n of_o any_o sound_a preacher_n of_o the_o gospel_n attain_v to_o the_o assurance_n of_o their_o salvation_n and_o of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o their_o sin_n wherein_o if_o any_o will_v take_v it_o as_o grant_v though_o false_o as_o they_o be_v most_o ready_a to_o do_v so_o who_o have_v lest_o feel_v the_o burden_n of_o their_o sin_n and_o therefore_o be_v indeed_o further_a off_o from_o it_o herein_o i_o say_v if_o any_o will_v needs_o deceive_v themselves_o i_o can_v help_v it_o but_o they_o be_v like_a to_o read_v the_o rest_n with_o less_o fruit_n and_o comfort_n and_o to_o go_v without_o the_o use_n of_o it_o in_o their_o life_n whatsoever_o they_o hope_v for_o and_o therefore_o such_o i_o advise_v to_o take_v most_o pain_n in_o the_o first_o part_n i_o mean_v in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o it_o and_o read_v other_o treatise_n concern_v the_o matter_n as_o master_n mores_n and_o other_o catechism_n and_o master_n perkins_n work_v namely_o his_o book_n entitle_v the_o grain_n of_o mustard_n seed_n and_o to_o raise_v all_o the_o doubt_n they_o can_v to_o any_o experience_a teacher_n or_o brother_n and_o to_o look_v for_o and_o see_v those_o thing_n work_v upon_o they_o which_o be_v teach_v there_o both_o the_o doctrine_n of_o humiliation_n and_o also_o of_o justification_n and_o deliverance_n if_o this_o be_v attain_v let_v they_o consider_v for_o the_o better_a assure_v themselves_o hereof_o that_o they_o can_v but_o affect_v love_n embrace_v and_o delight_n in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o sanctification_n and_o repentance_n from_o dead_a work_n i_o mean_v they_o shall_v desire_v to_o practice_v the_o godly_a and_o christian_n life_n when_o they_o see_v that_o it_o be_v the_o commandment_n of_o he_o who_o love_v they_o most_o dear_o and_o what_o it_o be_v and_o wherein_o it_o consist_v which_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o the_o second_o treatise_n of_o this_o book_n and_o to_o this_o end_n let_v they_o read_v and_o by_o mark_v seek_v as_o such_o who_o will_v find_v that_o they_o may_v see_v what_o sin_n there_o be_v in_o they_o which_o they_o be_v not_o willing_a nor_o desirous_a to_o forsake_v if_o there_o be_v any_o or_o among_o duty_n general_o appertain_v to_o all_o or_o particular_o touch_v themselves_o which_o they_o can_v submit_v themselves_o unto_o if_o there_o be_v either_o of_o these_o find_v in_o they_o as_o that_o they_o account_n of_o we_o 5.18_o and_o conscience_n make_v of_o one_o as_o well_o as_o of_o another_o which_o if_o they_o see_v and_o acknowledge_v according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n they_o can_v but_o submit_v themselves_o thereunto_o if_o they_o have_v right_o embrace_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o former_a treatise_n that_o as_o in_o judgement_n and_o knowledge_n they_o yield_v so_o their_o heart_n and_o affection_n may_v go_v with_o the_o same_o and_o so_o do_v god_n will_v work_v in_o they_o by_o little_a and_o little_a seek_v it_o by_o prayer_n of_o faith_n even_o as_o he_o wrought_v the_o like_a in_o they_o before_o and_o weaken_v such_o rebelliousnes_n in_o their_o heart_n already_o if_o therefore_o the_o teachable_a and_o christian_n reader_n be_v thus_o far_o wrought_v upon_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o he_o thus_o favour_n approve_v and_o give_v over_o himself_o to_o be_v make_v true_o repentant_a which_o be_v that_o that_o be_v require_v in_o the_o second_o which_o must_v be_v learn_v out_o of_o the_o three_o and_o four_o part_n and_o when_o this_o be_v understand_v approve_a consent_v unto_o and_o aim_v at_o the_o five_o part_n of_o the_o book_n shall_v be_v clear_a and_o easy_a to_o understand_v and_o what_o use_n he_o shall_v make_v of_o it_o namely_o of_o the_o let_v and_o hindrance_n which_o the_o devil_n raise_v up_o to_o hold_v he_o back_o from_o this_o course_n of_o life_n and_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o same_o of_o the_o which_o some_o i_o will_v set_v down_o and_o help_v he_o the_o better_a to_o know_v many_o other_o thereby_o i_o will_v meet_v with_o some_o of_o the_o objection_n which_o they_o allege_v why_o they_o shall_v be_v no_o further_o deal_v withal_o but_o suffer_v to_o go_v on_o as_o they_o do_v in_o a_o teachable_a and_o not_o resist_v the_o truth_n wilful_o i_o will_v answer_v and_o give_v they_o some_o worthy_a example_n of_o such_o as_o have_v go_v before_o they_o herein_o that_o they_o may_v not_o think_v they_o be_v press_v too_o far_o and_o to_o do_v more_o than_o they_o need_v if_o possible_o they_o may_v see_v their_o error_n and_o so_o find_v great_a liberty_n and_o delight_n in_o well_o do_v the_o which_o be_v do_v they_o shall_v see_v what_o difference_n be_v betwixt_o the_o estate_n they_o be_v in_o and_o that_o which_o they_o be_v stir_v up_o and_o call_v unto_o and_o that_o which_o have_v persuade_v and_o move_v i_o to_o this_o be_v as_o i_o partly_o say_v in_o the_o first_o entrance_n for_o that_o i_o see_v many_o of_o good_a hope_n and_o some_o not_o without_o a_o right_n and_o true_a beginning_n in_o this_o holy_a course_n to_o be_v keep_v at_o a_o stay_n stay_n or_o drive_v back_o and_o seem_v not_o to_o know_v what_o the_o christian_a life_n be_v nor_o in_o many_o year_n to_o come_v thus_o far_o as_o to_o be_v persuade_v how_o pleasant_a and_o profitable_a it_o be_v and_o by_o how_o many_o degree_n to_o be_v prefer_v without_o all_o comparison_n before_o any_o other_o course_n for_o many_o of_o the_o forward_a sort_n though_o they_o will_v not_o willing_o forsake_v it_o yet_o complain_v that_o they_o find_v much_o tedious_a heaviness_n strong_a discouragement_n and_o many_o relapse_n which_o breed_v doubtfulness_n and_o fear_n tediousness_n some_o which_o be_v weak_a be_v under_o deadly_a dump_n strange_a questioning_n whether_o they_o shall_v go_v forward_o or_o no_o forward_o and_o such_o small_a comfort_n they_o find_v in_o their_o profession_n that_o they_o declare_v plain_o that_o they_o be_v far_o from_o the_o staidness_n which_o i_o speak_v of_o and_o this_o not_o at_o the_o first_o only_o but_o many_o year_n after_o they_o have_v like_v well_o of_o the_o gospel_n diverse_a other_o account_v the_o christian_a life_n mopish_a solitary_a mopish_a and_o such_o a_o estate_n the_o which_o they_o hold_v great_a wisdom_n to_o avoid_v that_o i_o say_v nothing_o of_o the_o atheist_n who_o i_o and_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o first_o public_a help_n for_o the_o increase_n and_o nourish_v of_o a_o godly_a and_o christian_a life_n in_o all_o such_o as_o have_v true_o enter_v into_o it_o that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o word_n preach_v chap._n 3._o of_o the_o second_o public_a help_n namely_o the_o sacrament_n the_o next_o mean_a or_o help_v public_a be_v the_o sacrament_n which_o of_o the_o two_o be_v more_o dark_o see_v and_o find_v to_o be_v help_n to_o godliness_n than_o the_o word_n among_o the_o most_o part_n of_o those_o who_o be_v partaker_n of_o they_o both_o because_o man_n have_v seldome_a use_n of_o they_o then_o of_o other_o doctrine_n and_o also_o for_o that_o they_o be_v not_o so_o full_o instruct_v in_o the_o same_o and_o of_o the_o two_o sacrament_n which_o god_n have_v leave_v to_o his_o church_n in_o this_o latter_a age_n to_o be_v enjoy_v baptism_n be_v less_o see_v and_o perceive_v to_o be_v a_o help_n than_o the_o lord_n supper_n in_o speak_v whereof_o i_o purpose_v only_o to_o stand_v upon_o this_o which_o i_o have_v take_v in_o hand_n namely_o to_o show_v the_o christian_a reader_n how_o the_o sacrament_n be_v mean_n and_o help_v to_o set_v he_o forward_o in_o a_o godly_a life_n as_o too_o few_o do_v make_v they_o and_o to_o leave_v he_o for_o other_o knowledge_n about_o the_o sacrament_n which_o be_v exceed_o large_a to_o those_o who_o have_v write_v of_o they_o at_o large_a as_o m._n p._n martyr_n m._n calvin_n m._n beza_n and_o to_o ordinary_a teach_n and_o this_o also_o i_o will_v do_v with_o as_o much_o brevity_n as_o i_o can_v therefore_o first_o see_v the_o sacrament_n be_v help_n necessary_o adjoin_v unto_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o word_n and_o do_v visible_o confirm_v and_o ratify_v that_o which_o the_o word_n do_v tell_v how_o to_o make_v use_n of_o it_o but_o let_v we_o remember_v that_o beside_o the_o benefit_n and_o gain_v of_o it_o it_o be_v one_o of_o the_o private_a help_n that_o god_n in_o his_o wise_a and_o merciful_a providence_n ordain_v for_o his_o dear_a child_n to_o make_v their_o life_n sweet_a and_o comfortable_a here_o meditation_n which_o otherwise_o will_v be_v irksome_a and_o painful_a even_o to_o they_o who_o be_v best_a able_a to_o pass_v it_o well_o and_o therefore_o to_o neglect_v it_o shall_v not_o only_o be_v gross_a unthankfulnes_n but_o a_o charge_v of_o the_o lord_n with_o a_o work_n mere_o needless_a let_v we_o also_o for_o the_o better_a hearten_v of_o ourselves_o hereunto_o consider_v the_o uncertainty_n and_o shortness_n of_o our_o life_n and_o the_o warning_n of_o their_o knowledge_n neither_o deliver_v any_o thing_n by_o their_o own_o meditation_n more_o than_o they_o find_v in_o their_o commentary_n whereas_o if_o they_o do_v they_o shall_v draw_v themselves_o and_o not_o be_v fervent_a and_o diligent_a in_o use_v good_a mean_n do_v doubt_n and_o fear_n and_o this_o be_v the_o estate_n of_o many_o and_o those_o of_o long_a profession_n under_o the_o gospel_n which_o sort_n of_o people_n till_o they_o settle_v themselves_o constant_o to_o walk_v with_o god_n and_o will_v be_v content_a to_o keep_v a_o narrow_a watch_n over_o their_o heart_n and_o life_n can_v be_v at_o no_o better_a stay_n for_o by_o these_o mean_v they_o preserve_v their_o faith_n and_o keep_v peace_n with_o god_n ordinary_o as_o we_o see_v by_o experience_n or_o easy_o recover_v themselves_o again_o if_o they_o be_v dim_v and_o over-shadowed_a chap._n 5._o of_o satan_n hinder_v the_o believer_n from_o live_v godly_a and_o how_o many_o way_n and_o namely_o by_o keep_v he_o in_o a_o wander_a and_o unsettle_a course_n and_o also_o of_o the_o remedy_n against_o it_o and_o first_o by_o occasion_n of_o that_o how_o he_o hold_v back_o the_o wicked_a now_o it_o follow_v that_o it_o be_v likewise_o show_v how_o he_o let_v the_o believer_n from_o a_o godly_a life_n life_n so_o that_o even_o good_a christian_n and_o they_o who_o fear_n god_n shall_v yet_o be_v neither_o in_o their_o action_n will_v be_v tie_v to_o be_v otherwise_o direct_v then_o as_o seem_v good_a to_o themselves_o again_o they_o neither_o attain_v to_o sound_v and_o clear_a sight_n of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o their_o sin_n second_o neither_o will_v they_o labour_v for_o it_o by_o apply_v to_o themselves_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n but_o hope_v their_o state_n be_v good_a without_o that_o so_o that_o their_o life_n when_o they_o be_v at_o the_o best_a be_v but_o a_o bold_a presume_v of_o god_n mercy_n without_o any_o warrant_n and_o therefore_o either_o in_o that_o false_a confidence_n they_o die_v who_o estate_n yet_o can_v be_v good_a or_o else_o when_o it_o please_v god_n to_o awake_v they_o out_o of_o that_o spiritual_a sleep_n 78.35_o they_o confess_v the_o truth_n opinion_n for_o the_o most_o part_n that_o their_o own_o though_o all_o may_v see_v upon_o how_o weak_a ground_n be_v the_o best_a course_n when_o yet_o daily_a care_n of_o holiness_n be_v irksome_a to_o they_o and_o that_o all_o such_o as_o go_v further_o than_o they_o be_v but_o precise_a and_o foolish_a and_o full_a of_o fantasy_n for_o so_o be_v they_o for_o the_o most_o part_n account_v of_o who_o in_o particular_a draw_v the_o rule_n of_o religion_n into_o practice_n and_o yet_o they_o do_v not_o so_o easy_o rest_v herein_o but_o oft_o their_o conscience_n will_n they_o will_v they_o tell_v they_o that_o the_o godly_a life_n be_v best_a six_o to_o conclude_v either_o they_o be_v snare_v in_o sect_n and_o opinion_n above_o their_o reach_n which_o can_v stand_v with_o godliness_n such_o be_v may_v be_v easy_o conjecture_v these_o that_o i_o rehearse_v no_o more_o which_o be_v infinite_a yea_o even_o some_o of_o they_o be_v sufficient_a hindrance_n from_o a_o godly_a life_n in_o who_o soever_o they_o be_v find_v so_o that_o although_o the_o most_o will_v put_v themselves_o forth_o for_o godly_a yet_o be_v brand_v with_o any_o of_o these_o mark_n of_o satan_n they_o hinder_v the_o go_v forward_o of_o god_n people_n even_o in_o hold_v they_o from_o constancy_n and_o steadfastness_n in_o live_v godly_a from_o day_n to_o day_n and_o from_o renew_v their_o covenant_n with_o god_n from_o time_n to_o time_n without_o which_o grace_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a for_o they_o to_o be_v free_a from_o sore_a blemish_n and_o inward_a vexation_n and_o outward_a reproach_n thereby_o which_o the_o belove_a of_o the_o lord_n shall_v be_v far_o from_o and_o although_o through_o god_n tender_a kindness_n whereby_o he_o keep_v they_o that_o they_o be_v not_o utter_o forsake_v and_o will_v keep_v they_o to_o the_o end_n although_o i_o say_v through_o this_o goodness_n of_o god_n all_o these_o turn_n to_o their_o good_a yet_o that_o be_v not_o long_o of_o they_o by_o the_o envious_a man_n as_o even_o many_o thousand_o of_o they_o be_v still_o by_o his_o malice_n deprive_v thereof_o unto_o this_o day_n and_o this_o remedy_n be_v first_o that_o we_o suffer_v ourselves_o easy_o to_o be_v persuade_v that_o all_o our_o speech_n in_o the_o commendation_n of_o a_o godly_a life_n in_o general_a be_v but_o wind_n except_o we_o faithful_o endeavour_v to_o bring_v etc._n etc._n so_o i_o have_v labour_v in_o this_o treatise_n to_o direct_v man_n how_o to_o live_v in_o this_o present_a world_n so_o as_o they_o may_v walk_v with_o god_n even_o by_o bring_v they_o from_o a_o general_a &_o confuse_a thought_n of_o christianity_n to_o a_o daily_a and_o particular_a care_n of_o godliness_n throughout_o their_o whole_a course_n and_o see_v as_o our_o saviour_n say_v the_o light_n of_o the_o body_n be_v the_o eye_n so_o the_o light_n of_o the_o whole_a life_n be_v the_o effectual_a and_o powerful_a knowledge_n of_o god_n will_n and_o a_o well_o order_v heart_n and_o govern_v of_o the_o unruly_a affection_n therefore_o i_o have_v herein_o declare_v how_o such_o knowledge_n must_v be_v seek_v and_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a be_v daily_o govern_v in_o the_o cogitation_n and_o desire_n of_o it_o that_o they_o may_v draw_v the_o life_n in_o the_o several_a action_n and_o part_n thereof_o unto_o the_o obedience_n of_o christ_n yet_o i_o therein_o because_o it_o please_v god_n they_o shall_v do_v so_o and_o withal_o that_o they_o be_v watchful_a to_o practice_v in_o their_o labour_n all_o virtue_n and_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n offer_v as_o occasion_n shall_v be_v offer_v that_o be_v to_o say_v patience_n when_o they_o be_v provoke_v to_o the_o contrary_a with_o long_a sufferance_n meekness_n and_o their_o conscience_n shall_v be_v tie_v to_o such_o rule_n when_o pain_n and_o disease_n give_v no_o liberty_n to_o the_o mind_n to_o think_v of_o any_o thing_n but_o the_o greatness_n &_o extremity_n
