about_o get_v they_o but_o once_o into_o the_o bosom_n of_o the_o church_n and_o their_o business_n be_v do_v as_o for_o a_o poor_a protestant_n let_v he_o be_v never_o so_o humble_a and_o holy_a never_o so_o obedient_a to_o his_o ruler_n and_o charitable_a to_o his_o brethren_n never_o so_o desirous_a to_o know_v the_o whole_a will_n of_o god_n and_o to_o do_v it_o yet_o there_o be_v no_o god_n grant_v they_o themselves_o may_v in_o time_n consider_v of_o it_o how_o they_o shall_v ever_o be_v able_a to_o answer_v it_o when_o the_o blood_n of_o soul_n shall_v be_v require_v at_o their_o hand_n by_o he_o who_o die_v to_o save_v they_o and_o beside_o the_o mischief_n do_v to_o those_o within_o the_o church_n how_o many_o thousand_o by_o this_o practice_n of_o they_o be_v keep_v out_o of_o it_o for_o both_o turk_n and_o jew_n look_v upon_o those_o christian_n as_o idolater_n who_o be_v guilty_a of_o this_o image-worship_n and_o on_o that_o account_n be_v prejudice_v against_o after_o all_o the_o papist_n take_v it_o very_o heinous_o to_o be_v accuse_v of_o idolatry_n and_o some_o among_o ourselves_o think_v this_o to_o be_v too_o heavy_a a_o charge_n t._n let_v they_o take_v it_o as_o they_o will_v and_o let_v other_o mince_v the_o matter_n as_o they_o please_v most_o certain_o they_o be_v guilty_a of_o violate_v the_o second_o commandment_n and_o this_o violation_n of_o it_o by_o worship_v of_o image_n have_v as_o i_o have_v say_v be_v heretofore_o account_v and_o call_v idolatry_n both_o by_o the_o ancient_a jew_n and_o by_o the_o primitive_a christian_n who_o utter_o detest_v the_o same_o and_o if_o now_o a_o soft_a name_n must_v be_v devise_v for_o it_o let_v any_o man_n call_v it_o as_o he_o please_v still_o it_o must_v be_v look_v nothing_o paint_v on_o the_o wall_n shall_v be_v worship_v and_o how_o one_o of_o the_o father_n in_o great_a displeasure_n tear_v a_o veil_n in_o a_o church_n in_o which_o he_o find_v a_o picture_n fear_v it_o may_v be_v a_o occasion_n of_o worship_v it_o and_o write_v earnest_o to_o the_o bishop_n of_o the_o place_n about_o it_o there_o also_o you_o have_v a_o large_a account_n of_o the_o rise_n of_o this_o practice_n in_o the_o more_o corrupt_a and_o decline_a time_n about_o six_o or_o seven_o hundred_o year_n after_o our_o saviour_n and_o what_o opposition_n be_v then_o make_v to_o it_o by_o the_o better_a sort_n of_o christian_n by_o what_o weak_a argument_n it_o be_v defend_v by_o what_o ill_a art_n in_o some_o place_n establish_v what_o bad_a effect_n it_o produce_v and_o how_o by_o degree_n the_o people_n be_v sink_v into_o all_o that_o gross_a superstition_n and_o idolatry_n which_o have_v overspread_v the_o roman_a church_n and_o particular_o this_o kingdom_n at_o the_o time_n of_o the_o reformation_n this_o with_o much_o more_o to_o the_o same_o purpose_n you_o will_v there_o find_v discover_v and_o will_v see_v what_o great_a reason_n there_o be_v for_o reform_v the_o church_n from_o this_o as_o well_o as_o many_o other_o corruption_n and_o abuse_n wherewith_o we_o be_v overrun_v l._n i_o shall_v glad_o peruse_v these_o homily_n when_o i_o have_v opportunity_n be_v already_o very_o sensible_a that_o the_o worship_n of_o image_n be_v a_o most_o dangerous_a and_o unlawful_a custom_n a_o mere_a innovation_n in_o the_o church_n and_o a_o plain_a breach_n of_o the_o second_o commandment_n and_o therefore_o well_o deserve_v to_o be_v brand_v with_o the_o infamous_a name_n of_o idolatry_n from_o which_o god_n preserve_v i_o t._n so_o it_o have_v be_v reckon_v and_o common_o style_v by_o our_o church_n and_o by_o those_o of_o our_o divine_n who_o be_v most_o instrumental_a in_o the_o reform_v it_o and_o have_v be_v most_o eminent_a for_o the_o defence_n of_o it_o good_a reason_n you_o have_v therefore_o steadfast_o to_o resolve_v against_o it_o but_o let_v we_o now_o proceed_v to_o what_o remain_v chap._n xiii_o of_o pray_v by_o bead_n l._n for_o our_o sake_n and_o wherein_o be_v contain_v all_o the_o doctrine_n and_o precept_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n if_o some_o man_n abuse_v wine_n it_o do_v not_o therefore_o follow_v that_o even_o these_o man_n themselves_o must_v be_v always_o keep_v from_o it_o if_o they_o may_v be_v reduce_v to_o sobriety_n and_o moderation_n in_o the_o use_n of_o it_o much_o less_o ought_v wine_n his_o belief_n and_o practice_n according_o by_o which_o mean_n he_o shall_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n be_v enable_v to_o know_v and_o do_v all_o that_o be_v necessary_a to_o salvation_n as_o for_o other_o matter_n that_o be_v more_o difficult_a and_o less_o needful_a let_v he_o pass_v over_o they_o or_o stay_v till_o he_o find_v a_o interpreter_n he_o that_o be_v thus_o humble_a and_o mean_a capacity_n but_o of_o more_o piety_n and_o humility_n have_v by_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n be_v preserve_v in_o the_o truth_n but_o be_v they_o indeed_o so_o careful_a of_o the_o people_n that_o out_o of_o pure_a kindness_n to_o their_o soul_n they_o will_v not_o trust_v they_o with_o these_o holy_a book_n for_o fear_v they_o shall_v abuse_v they_o to_o their_o hurt_n very_o common_a among_o they_o viz._n their_o lie_a legend_n compose_v by_o lazy_a monk_n full_a of_o such_o ridiculous_a story_n and_o gross_a falsehood_n that_o they_o be_v now_o ashamed_a to_o have_v they_o see_v among_o protestant_n l._n he_o compare_v the_o scripture_n to_o a_o father_n testament_n but_o sure_o it_o be_v a_o odd_a way_n to_o make_v the_o son_n understand_v his_o father_n will_n by_o wrest_v it_o out_o of_o his_o hand_n and_o put_v he_o off_o with_o other_o write_n instead_o of_o it_o t._n a_o odd_a way_n it_o be_v indeed_o and_o give_v just_a cause_n to_o suspect_v have_v more_o than_o we_o though_o we_o give_v they_o not_o the_o name_n of_o sacrament_n yet_o we_o have_v the_o thing_n themselves_o and_o as_o to_o the_o five_o there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o reason_n that_o we_o shall_v receive_v or_o they_o retain_v it_o for_o your_o full_a satisfaction_n i_o shall_v name_v they_o to_o you_o and_o in_o a_o few_o word_n make_v good_a what_o i_o have_v say_v l._n pray_v will_v you_o please_v to_o do_v it_o and_o i_o shall_v trouble_v you_o with_o no_o more_o question_n hereafter_o t._n to_o the_o sacrament_n of_o baptism_n and_o the_o lord_n supper_n which_o both_o we_o and_o they_o receive_v they_o do_v further_o add_v confirmation_n holy_a order_n marriage_n penance_n and_o extreme_a unction_n now_o as_o to_o the_o name_n of_o sacrament_n it_o be_v a_o vain_a thing_n to_o dispute_v about_o word_n till_o we_o be_v agree_v of_o the_o sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o they_o for_o if_o by_o sacrament_n they_o mean_v any_o sacred_a rite_n or_o usage_n that_o may_v signify_v some_o grace_n or_o some_o good_a duty_n or_o by_o way_n of_o allusion_n may_v serve_v to_o some_o good_a purpose_n in_o religion_n than_o instead_o of_o seven_o they_o may_v perhaps_o reckon_v seventeen_o sacrament_n or_o many_o more_o and_o in_o this_o large_a and_o loose_a sense_n the_o ancient_n common_o make_v use_n of_o the_o word_n give_v the_o name_n of_o sacrament_n to_o many_o thing_n relate_v to_o religion_n which_o be_v any_o way_n mystical_a or_o significant_a yea_o frequent_o they_o call_v our_o religion_n itself_o a_o sacrament_n or_o mystery_n and_o if_o they_o of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n will_v use_v the_o word_n in_o this_o large_a sense_n and_o so_o style_v the_o several_a thing_n now_o mention_v sacrament_n let_v they_o enjoy_v their_o liberty_n i_o think_v it_o be_v not_o worth_a contend_v about_o only_o let_v they_o not_o say_v that_o we_o despise_v the_o thing_n themselves_o because_o we_o think_v it_o not_o so_o fit_a to_o give_v they_o this_o name_n for_o by_o a_o sacrament_n we_o understand_v as_o it_o be_v express_v in_o our_o church-catechism_n a_o outward_a sign_n of_o a_o inward_a spiritual_a grace_n give_v unto_o we_o ordain_v by_o christ_n as_o a_o mean_n whereby_o we_o receive_v the_o same_o grace_n and_o a_o pledge_n to_o assure_v we_o thereof_o now_o in_o this_o sense_n we_o say_v that_o only_a baptism_n and_o the_o lords-supper_n be_v proper_o to_o be_v call_v sacrament_n be_v ordain_v by_o christ_n express_a command_n as_o a_o way_n and_o mean_n for_o the_o bestow_n of_o lord_n plain_o ordain_v that_o all_o who_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v be_v baptise_a with_o water_n in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o father_n son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n for_o the_o profession_n of_o our_o faith_n in_o he_o and_o for_o the_o receive_v the_o remission_n of_o our_o sin_n with_o spiritual_a regeneration_n thus_o do_v he_o institute_v the_o holy_a communion_n command_v all_o all_o christian_n to_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o badge_n of_o their_o profession_n that_o hereby_o they_o may_v solemn_o testify_v their_o consent_n to_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n and_o at_o the_o same_o time_n may_v receive_v the_o blessing_n of_o this_o covenant_n but_o now_o this_o can_v be_v say_v of_o those_o other_o thing_n which_o the_o papist_n call_v sacrament_n how_o useful_a soever_o any_o of_o they_o may_v be_v in_o other_o respect_n for_o though_o
have_v of_o idol_n that_o be_v of_o idol-god_n but_o not_o the_o worship_n of_o image_n in_o honour_n of_o the_o true_a god_n t._n at_o this_o rate_n they_o common_o talk_v but_o without_o any_o solid_a reason_n since_o the_o first_o commandment_n forbid_v our_o have_v any_o false_a god_n or_o idol_n but_o then_o the_o second_o commandment_n most_o plain_o forbid_v the_o make_n of_o image_n for_o religious_a worship_n yea_o though_o man_n shall_v pretend_v that_o they_o thereby_o design_v to_o worship_v the_o true_a and_o live_a god_n for_o he_o be_v by_o no_o mean_n please_v with_o such_o worship_n nor_o will_v accept_v of_o it_o but_o regard_v it_o as_o a_o affront_n and_o dishonour_v do_v to_o his_o divine_a majesty_n so_o that_o we_o may_v bold_o say_v have_v any_o jew_n of_o old_a be_v find_v guilty_a of_o give_v so_o much_o religious_a worship_n to_o image_n as_o the_o papist_n general_o do_v at_o this_o day_n though_o he_o shall_v have_v make_v the_o very_a same_o pretence_n and_o excuse_n which_o they_o do_v yet_o will_v he_o have_v be_v judge_v guilty_a of_o that_o idolatry_n which_o be_v forbid_v in_o the_o second_o commandment_n and_o according_o will_v have_v be_v proceed_v against_o by_o such_o godly_a ruler_n as_o be_v zealous_a for_o the_o true_a honour_n of_o god_n and_o the_o purity_n of_o his_o worship_n such_o as_o hezekiah_n and_o other_o and_o to_o enlarge_v a_o little_a on_o this_o subject_n this_o as_o many_o learned_a man_n have_v show_v be_v plain_o the_o case_n of_o the_o israelite_n in_o their_o worship_n of_o the_o golden_a calf_n which_o aaron_n make_v in_o moses_n absence_n exod._n 32._o 4._o for_o it_o be_v very_o unreasonable_a to_o think_v that_o they_o take_v this_o image_n itself_o for_o the_o god_n which_o fashion_n for_o divine_a worship_n yea_o v._n 5._o its_o express_o say_v they_o proclaim_v a_o feast_n to_o the_o lord_n design_v therefore_o to_o worship_v the_o true_a god_n by_o this_o image_n and_o of_o this_o nature_n be_v the_o idolatry_n of_o jeroboam_fw-la who_o make_v israel_n to_o sin_n of_o which_o we_o read_v 1_o king_n 12._o 28._o for_o we_o find_v he_o not_o accuse_v of_o draw_v away_o the_o people_n from_o the_o worship_n of_o the_o true_a god_n but_o he_o set_v up_o the_o worship_n of_o image_n contrary_a to_o god_n express_v command_v now_o this_o be_v a_o different_a thing_n from_o the_o worship_n of_o idol_n god_n as_o of_o baal_n and_o other_o heathen_a deity_n which_o we_o find_v some_o of_o the_o king_n of_o israel_n accuse_v of_o as_o ahab_n particular_o 1_o king_n 16._o 30_o 31_o etc._n etc._n where_o it_o be_v say_v of_o he_o that_o as_o if_o it_o have_v be_v a_o light_a thing_n to_o walk_v in_o the_o sin_n of_o jeroboam_fw-la he_o also_o go_v and_o serve_v baal_n and_o worship_v he_o where_o you_o have_v plain_o a_o distinction_n make_v betwixt_o the_o sin_n of_o jeroboam_fw-la and_o this_o of_o ahab_n in_o serve_v baal_n so_o we_o shall_v after_o find_v of_o jehu_n who_o be_v employ_v to_o punish_v ahab_n house_n for_o this_o gross_a idolatry_n and_o be_v himself_o so_o zealous_a against_o it_o that_o he_o slay_v a_o multitude_n of_o reason_n be_v imagine_v that_o he_o shall_v worship_v these_o calf_n as_o idol-god_n in_o opposition_n to_o the_o true_a god_n who_o have_v himself_o at_o god_n command_v be_v so_o industrious_a for_o the_o root_n out_o that_o sort_n of_o idolatry_n no_o sure_o but_o his_o crime_n be_v that_o he_o keep_v up_o a_o unlawful_a way_n of_o worship_v the_o true_a god_n by_o these_o golden_a calf_n which_o jeroboam_fw-la have_v set_v up_o contrary_a to_o the_o second_o commandment_n which_o plain_o forbid_v the_o give_v of_o any_o divine_a worship_n to_o image_n and_o they_o who_o be_v guilty_a of_o this_o image-worship_n be_v also_o account_v and_o call_v idolater_n as_o we_o find_v it_o assert_v of_o the_o people_n that_o worship_v the_o golden_a calf_n which_o aaron_n make_v 1_o cor._n at_o their_o idolatrous_a festival_n exod._n 32._o 6._o and_o their_o case_n seem_v the_o very_a same_o who_o be_v follower_n of_o jeroboam_fw-la so_o that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o man_n to_o be_v guilty_a of_o some_o sort_n of_o idolatry_n even_o whilst_o they_o retain_v the_o worship_n of_o the_o true_a god_n and_o do_v not_o set_v up_o idol-god_n in_o opposition_n to_o he_o even_o by_o corrupt_v his_o worship_n with_o the_o use_n of_o image_n which_o he_o have_v strict_o forbid_v thus_o it_o sometime_o be_v with_o the_o jew_n of_o old_a and_o thus_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v at_o this_o day_n with_o the_o papist_n and_o as_o such_o image-worship_n be_v account_v idolatry_n by_o the_o prophet_n and_o holy_a man_n of_o old_a so_o it_o be_v by_o the_o apostle_n and_o primitive_a christian_n who_o utter_o abhor_v the_o use_n of_o image_n in_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n yea_o to_o such_o miserable_a shift_n be_v learned_a man_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n put_v for_o the_o vindicate_a of_o this_o practice_n that_o they_o be_v great_o divide_v among_o themselves_o and_o take_v several_a way_n to_o do_v it_o each_o party_n charge_v the_o other_o with_o idolatry_n in_o the_o way_n they_o take_v for_o some_o of_o they_o say_v that_o the_o image_n be_v to_o be_v worship_v with_o the_o very_a same_o worship_n which_o be_v due_a to_o the_o object_n that_o it_o represent_v whether_o it_o be_v latria_n dulia_n etc._n etc._n according_a to_o the_o trifle_a distinction_n before_o mention_v for_o say_v they_o the_o image_n and_o the_o object_n represent_v by_o it_o be_v as_o it_o be_v join_v together_o so_o that_o one_o and_o the_o same_o act_n of_o worship_n be_v give_v to_o both_o which_o pass_v through_o the_o image_n to_o the_o object_n whereas_o to_o give_v any_o worship_n to_o the_o image_n itself_o say_v these_o man_n will_v be_v idolatry_n but_o other_o say_v there_o be_v a_o inferior_a sort_n of_o worship_n due_a to_o the_o image_n itself_o on_o account_n of_o the_o relation_n it_o have_v to_o the_o object_n which_o it_o represent_v and_o this_o only_o may_v be_v give_v to_o it_o but_o to_o give_v the_o same_o worship_n to_o the_o image_n which_o belong_v to_o the_o object_n they_o say_v be_v idolatrous_a but_o i_o shall_v soon_o puzzle_v and_o tire_n both_o you_o and_o myself_o shall_v i_o go_v about_o to_o present_v you_o with_o all_o the_o fine_a and_o subtle_a distinction_n which_o both_o party_n use_v for_o their_o own_o vindication_n in_o this_o controversy_n talk_v of_o worship_n proper_a and_o improper_a direct_a and_o reductive_a real_a and_o relative_a by_o itself_o and_o by_o accident_n etc._n etc._n each_o accuse_v the_o other_o that_o they_o coin_v distinction_n which_o themselves_o do_v not_o well_o understand_v and_o sure_o the_o same_o may_v just_o be_v say_v of_o they_o all_o much_o more_o may_v it_o be_v say_v of_o the_o common_a people_n who_o be_v this_o while_n in_o a_o very_a sad_a condition_n even_o in_o most_o evident_a danger_n of_o idolatry_n and_o that_o in_o the_o judgement_n of_o these_o their_o own_o learned_a man_n who_o be_v themselves_o entangle_v in_o such_o labyrinth_n and_o perplexity_n as_o they_o know_v not_o how_o to_o deliver_v themselves_o from_o l._n methinks_v it_o be_v much_o more_o safe_a and_o prudent_a for_o they_o all_o to_o follow_v the_o plain_a direction_n of_o god_n holy_a word_n not_o to_o worship_n or_o bow_v down_o to_o image_n upon_o any_o pretence_n whatever_o t._n this_o indeed_o be_v a_o safe_a course_n and_o the_o only_a way_n they_o can_v take_v to_o secure_v themselves_o and_o their_o people_n from_o fall_v into_o idolatry_n through_o ignorance_n or_o mistake_n of_o which_o at_o lest_o there_o be_v great_a danger_n by_o their_o own_o confession_n on_o all_o side_n but_o so_o far_o be_v they_o from_o this_o that_o they_o endeavour_v to_o keep_v this_o second_o commandment_n as_o much_o as_o they_o well_o can_v from_o the_o people_n knowledge_n both_o by_o their_o false_a gloss_n
plenary_a indulgence_n for_o themselves_o and_o may_v every_o day_n release_v a_o soul_n out_o of_o purgatory_n which_o sure_o they_o be_v very_o uncharitable_a if_o they_o will_v not_o do_v nay_o which_o seem_v strange_a of_o all_o even_o those_o in_o purgatory_n may_v be_v admit_v into_o this_o fraternity_n if_o any_o particular_a friend_n of_o they_o on_o earth_n shall_v desire_v it_o and_o fulsome_a ridiculous_a stuff_n let_v we_o return_v to_o your_o author_n and_o see_v what_o he_o say_v for_o this_o manner_n of_o pray_v which_o a_o parrot_n may_v go_v near_o to_o learn_v and_o use_v it_o with_o as_o much_o devotion_n as_o multitude_n of_o they_o l._n he_o say_v that_o the_o ave-mary_n be_v use_v sixty_o three_o time_n because_o the_o bless_a virgin_n mary_n live_v just_a so_o be_v just_a none_o at_o all_o why_o do_v they_o not_o by_o this_o reason_n say_v the_o lords-prayer_n thirty_o three_o time_n because_o our_o saviour_n live_v so_o many_o year_n and_o it_o may_v also_o be_v ask_v why_o but_o one_o lords-prayer_n for_o nine_o ave-maries_n but_o wave_v these_o thing_n let_v we_o hear_v his_o pretence_n for_o this_o odd_a way_n of_o pray_v by_o run_v over_o the_o same_o word_n so_o many_o time_n together_o as_o if_o they_o will_v make_v up_o with_o the_o number_n what_o they_o want_v in_o weight_n and_o devotion_n and_o then_o tell_v they_o by_o their_o bead_n as_o if_o they_o be_v afraid_a of_o be_v someway_o cheat_v if_o they_o do_v not_o keep_v so_o exact_a a_o reckon_n certain_o we_o have_v neither_o precept_n nor_o example_n in_o scripture_n people_n will_v play_v a_o game_n at_o card_n which_o shall_v say_v prayer_n for_o the_o other_o at_o such_o a_o time_n so_o that_o it_o seem_v they_o take_v they_o for_o a_o kind_n of_o penance_n be_v glad_a when_o they_o be_v over_o as_o a_o schoolboy_n when_o he_o have_v do_v his_o task_n and_o be_v this_o like_o the_o devotion_n of_o the_o holy_a psalmist_n who_o pray_v to_o god_n and_o praise_v he_o with_o all_o his_o heart_n and_o soul_n and_o sing_v praise_n with_o understanding_n and_o with_o great_a affection_n and_o delight_v or_o much_o less_o be_v this_o like_a to_o that_o of_o our_o bless_a saviour_n who_o in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o flesh_n offer_v up_o prayer_n and_o supplication_n with_o strong_a cry_n and_o tear_n as_o we_o have_v it_o heb._n 5._o 7._o he_o more_o weak_a and_o impertinent_a than_o what_o my_o author_n talk_v of_o say_v five_o pater-noster_n in_o honour_n of_o our_o saviour_n five_o wound_n he_o mean_v i_o suppose_v those_o in_o his_o hand_n and_o foot_n and_o that_o on_o his_o side_n but_o what_o he_o mean_v by_o our_o say_v the_o lords-prayer_n in_o honour_n to_o those_o wound_n i_o can_v well_o tell_v t._n nor_o can_v i_o resolve_v you_o he_o may_v as_o well_o talk_v of_o say_v it_o twelve_o time_n in_o honour_n of_o the_o twelve_o apostle_n and_o then_o seventy_o time_n for_o the_o seventy_o disciple_n and_o after_o be_v indeed_o a_o most_o admirable_a form_n of_o prayer_n which_o may_v not_o only_o serve_v as_o a_o pattern_n to_o direct_v we_o how_o to_o pray_v but_o be_v also_o most_o proper_a and_o fit_a to_o be_v frequent_o use_v as_o a_o prayer_n and_o may_v very_o well_o be_v join_v with_o any_o other_o prayer_n which_o we_o make_v to_o almighty_a god_n but_o yet_o we_o must_v not_o think_v there_o be_v any_o devotion_n express_v or_o any_o advantage_n get_v by_o repeat_v it_o over_o so_o many_o time_n in_o a_o hour_n or_o a_o day_n as_o if_o there_o be_v some_o secret_a virtue_n and_o force_n in_o the_o bare_a rehearsal_n of_o the_o word_n whilst_o we_o little_a or_o nothing_o attend_v to_o the_o sense_n of_o they_o which_o be_v fit_a for_o magpie_n and_o parrot_n than_o for_o reasonable_a creature_n from_o who_o god_n expect_v a_o reasonable_a service_n wherein_o their_o heart_n and_o soul_n be_v to_o be_v employ_v as_o well_o as_o their_o tongue_n but_o let_v we_o proceed_v chap._n be_v that_o which_o be_v condemn_v by_o the_o apostle_n in_o that_o place_n to_o timothy_n or_o not_o yet_o it_o be_v a_o very_a unreasonable_a imposition_n and_o tend_v to_o ensnare_v man_n conscience_n and_o make_v they_o fancy_v there_o be_v some_o religion_n in_o use_v this_o sort_n of_o food_n rather_o than_o that_o yet_o mistake_v i_o not_o what_o real_o tend_v to_o piety_n and_o mortification_n we_o do_v not_o in_o the_o least_o condemn_v no_o we_o commend_v and_o require_v it_o but_o the_o distinction_n of_o meat_n make_v in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n seem_v not_o to_o have_v any_o such_o tendency_n for_o with_o they_o a_o man_n that_o shall_v eat_v plenty_n of_o salmon_n sturgeon_n or_o other_o such_o delicious_a fish_n and_o drink_v rich_a wine_n break_v not_o his_o lent_n though_o it_o be_v like_o the_o strict_a sort_n take_v not_o this_o liberty_n but_o if_o he_o chance_v to_o eat_v a_o little_a of_o any_o course_n sort_n of_o flesh_n or_o but_o the_o broth_n it_o be_v boil_v in_o or_o any_o sort_n of_o milk-meat_n he_o be_v a_o transgressor_n as_o if_o there_o be_v not_o a_o flesh_n of_o fish_n as_o well_o as_o of_o bird_n and_o beast_n or_o as_o if_o there_o be_v any_o virtue_n in_o abstain_v from_o one_o sort_n rather_o than_o another_o when_o we_o keep_v a_o true_a fast_a we_o be_v that_o while_n to_o abstain_v from_o all_o sort_n of_o meat_n if_o we_o be_v able_a in_o a_o time_n of_o abstinence_n it_o beseem_v we_o to_o eat_v more_o spare_o and_o to_o use_v such_o a_o sort_n of_o diet_n as_o be_v most_o cheap_a and_o plain_a and_o tend_v least_o to_o please_v the_o palate_n or_o pamper_v the_o flesh_n that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v in_o a_o better_a temper_n for_o religious_a duty_n and_o may_v have_v more_o time_n for_o our_o devotion_n more_o money_n for_o the_o poor_a and_o may_v both_o humble_a our_o soul_n and_o afflict_v and_o tame_v our_o body_n and_o govern_v our_o appetite_n for_o all_o this_o there_o be_v good_a reason_n such_o fast_v and_o abstinence_n administer_v to_o religion_n but_o then_o whether_o in_o your_o time_n of_o abstinence_n you_o eat_v a_o little_a flesh_n or_o a_o little_a fish_n whether_o with_o your_o fish_n you_o eat_v butter_n or_o oil_n whether_o you_o drink_v milk_n or_o small-beer_n and_o the_o like_a seem_v not_o of_o the_o least_o consequence_n on_o any_o religious_a account_n you_o be_v neither_o better_o nor_o worse_o for_o one_o or_o the_o other_o here_o you_o may_v well_o say_v meat_n commend_v we_o not_o to_o god_n that_o which_o enter_v into_o the_o mouth_n defile_v not_o the_o man_n l._n but_o to_o this_o he_o reply_v that_o the_o forbid_a fruit_n which_o our_o first_o parent_n taste_v though_o not_o evil_a in_o itself_o yet_o the_o eat_n of_o it_o be_v displease_v to_o god_n t._n and_o good_a reason_n since_o god_n himself_o have_v give_v a_o express_a command_n to_o the_o contrary_n l._n and_o he_o urge_v that_o so_o god_n have_v command_v we_o
