XXIX 1 Gods heavy judgement upon Jerusalem 7 The unsatiableness of her enemies 9 The senslesness 13 and deep hypocrisie of the Jews 18.1 promise of sanctification to the godly ‖ Or O Ariel that is The lion of God WO to Ariel to Ariel ‖ Or of the city the city where David dwelt add ye year to year let them †Heb. cut off the heals kill sacrifices 2 Yet I will distress Ariel and there shall be heaviness and sorrow and it shall be unto me as Ariel 3 And I will camp against thee round about and will lay siege against thee with a mount and I will raise forts against thee 4 And thou shalt be brought down and shalt speak out of the ground and thy speech shall be low out of the dust and thy voice shall be as of one that hath a familiar spirit out of the ground and thy speech shall †Heb. peep of chiep. whisper out of the dust 5 Moreover the multitude of thy strangers shall be like small dust and the multitude of the terrible ones shall be as chaff that passeth away yea it shall be at an instant suddenly 6 Thou shalt be visited of the LORD of hosts with thunder and with earthquake and great noise with storm and tempest and the flame of devouring fire 7 ¶ And the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel even all that fight against her and her munition and that distress her shall be as a dream of a night-vision 8 It shall even be as when a hungry man dreameth and behold he eateth but he awaketh and his soul is empty or as when a thirsty man dreameth and behold he drinketh but he awaketh and behold he is faint and his soul hath appetite so shall the multitude of all the nations be that fight against mount Zion 9 ¶ Stay your selves and wonder ‖ Or take your pleasure and riot cry ye out and cry they are drunken but not with wine they stagger but not with strong drink 10 For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep and hath closed your eyes the prophets and your †Heb. heads rulers the seers hath he covered 11 And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a ‖ Or letter book that is sealed which men deliver to one that is learned saying Read this I pray thee and he saith I cannot for it is sealed 12 And the book is delivered to him that is not learned saying Read this I pray thee and he saith I am not learned 13 ¶ Wherefore the Lord said * Matth. 15.8 Mark 7.6 Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth and with their lips do honour me but have removed their heart far from me and their fear towards me is taught by the precept of men 14 Therefore behold †Heb. off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done saith the LORD 38 ¶ Behold the days come saith the LORD that the city shall be built to the LORD from the towre of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner 39 And the measuring-line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb and shall compass about to Goath 40 And the whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron unto the corner of the hors-gate towards the east shall be holy unto the LORD it shall not be plucked up nor thrown down any more for ever CHAP. XXXII 1 Jeremiah being imprisoned by Zedekiah for his prophesie 6 buyeth Hanameels field 13 Baruch must preserve the evidences as tokens of the peoples return 16 Jeremiah in his prayer complaineth to God 26 God confirmeth the captivity for their sins 36 and promiseth a gracious return THe word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar 2 For then the king of Babylons army besieged Jerusalem and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison which was in the king of Judahs house 3 For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up saying Wherefore dost thou prophesie and say Thus saith the LORD * Ch. 34.2 Behold I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon he shall take it 4 And Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Caldeans but shall surely * Chap. 34.3 be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon and shall speak with him mouth to mouth and his eyes shall behold his eyes 5 And he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon and there shall he be until I visit him saith the LORD though ye fight with the Caldeans ye shall not prosper 6 ¶ And Jeremiah said The word of the LORD came unto me saying 7 Behold Hanameel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee saying Buy thee my field that is in Anathoâ—h for the * Levit. 25.24 Ruth 4.4 right of redemption is thine to buy it 8 So Hanameel mine uncles son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD and said unto me Buy my field I pray thee that is in Anathoth which is in the countrey of Benjamin for the right of inheritance is thine and the redemption is thine buy it for thy self then I knew that this was the word of the LORD 9 And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncles son that was in Anathoth and weighed him the money even ‖ Or seven shekels and ten pieces of silver seventeen shekels of silver 10 And I †Heb. wrote in the book subscribed the evidence and sealed it and took witnesses and weighed him the money in the balances 11 So I took the evidence of the purchase both that which was sealed according to the law and custom and that which was open 12 And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah the son of Maaseiah in the sight of Hanameel mine uncles son and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison 13 ¶ And I charged Baruch before them saying 14 Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Take these evidences this evidence of the purchase both which is sealed and this evidence which is open and put them in an earthen vessel that they may continue many days 15 For thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land 16 ¶ Now when I had delivered the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah I prayed unto the LORD saying 17 Ah Lord GOD behold thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm and there is nothing ‖ Or hid from thee too hard for thee 18 Thou shewest * Exod. 34.7 Deut. 5.10 loving kindness unto 7.23 1 Chron. 17.21 out of the land of Egypt with signs and with wonders and with a strong hand and with a stretched out arm and with great terrour 22 And hast given them this land which thou didst swear to their fathers to give them a land flowing with milk and honey 23 And they came in and possessed it but they obeyed not thy voice neither walked in thy law they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them 24 Behold the ‖ Or engines of shot mounts they are come unto the city to take it and the city is given into the hand of the Caldeans that fight against it because of the sword and of the famine and of the pestilence and what thou hast spoken is come to pass and behold thou seest it 25 And thou hast said unto me O Lord GOD Buy thee the field for money and take witnesses for the city is given into the hand of the Caldeans 26 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah saying 27 Behold I am the LORD the * Numb 16.22 God of all flesh Is there any thing too hard for me 28 Therefore thus saith the LORD Behold I will give this city into the hand of the Caldeans and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and he shall take it 29 And the Caldeans that fight against this city shall come and set fire on this city and burn it with the houses * Chap. 19.13 upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal and poured out drink-offerings unto other gods to provoke me to anger 30 For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have onely done evil before me from their youth for the children of Israel have onely provoked me to anger with the work of their hands saith the LORD 31 For this city hath been to me as †Heb. for my anger a provocation of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day that I should remove it from before my face 32
likeness and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel 17 When they went they went upon their four sides and they returned not when they went 18 As for their rings they were so high that they were dreadful and their ‖ Or strakes rings were full of eyes round about them four 19 And when the living creatures went the wheels went by them and when the living creatures were lift up from the earth the wheels were lift up 20 Whithersoever the spirit was to go they went thither was their spirit to go and the wheels were lifted up over against them for the spirit ‖ Or of life of the living creature was in the wheels 21 When those went these went and when those stood these stood and when those were lifted up from the earth the wheels were lifted up over against them for the spirit ‖ Or of â—ifâ— of the living creature was in the wheels 22 And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal stretched forth over their heads above 23 And under the firmament were their wings strait the one toward the other every one had two which covered on this side and every one had two which covered on that side their bodies 24 And when they went I heard the noise of their wings like the noise of great waters as the voice of the Almighty the voice of speech as the noise of an host when they stood they let down their wings 25 And there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads when they stood and had let down their wings 26 ¶ And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne as the appearance of a sapphire-stone and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it 27 And I saw as the colour of amber as the appearance of fire round about within it from the appearance of his loyns even upward and from the appearance of his loyns even downward I saw as it were the appearance of fire and it had brightness round about 28 As the appearance of the bowe that is in the cloud in the day of rain so was the appearance of the brightness round about This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD and when I saw it I fell upon my face and I heard a voice of one that spake CHAP. II. 1 Ezekiels commission 6 His instruction 9 The roll of his heavy prophesie ANd he said unto me Son of man stand upon thy feet and I will speak unto thee 2 And the spirit entred into me when he spake unto me and set me upon my feet that I heard him that spake unto me 3 And he said unto me Son of man I send thee to the children of Israel to a rebellious †Heb. nations nation that hath rebelled against me they and their fathers have transgressed against me even unto this very day 4 For they are †Heb. hard of faâ—e impudent children and stiff-hearted I do send thee unto them and thou shalt say unto them Thus saith the Lord GOD. 5 And they whether they will hear or whether they will forbear for they are a rebellious house yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them 6 ¶ And thou son of man be not afraid of them neither be afraid of their words though ‖ Or rebels briers and thorns be with thee and thou dost dwell among scorpions be not afraid of their words not be dismayed at their looks though they be a rebellious house 7 And thou shalt speak my words unto them whether they will hear or whether they will forbear for they are †Heb. rebellion most rebellious 8 But thou son of man hear what I say unto thee Be not thou rebellions like that rebellious house open thy mouth and * Rev. 10.9 eat that I give thee 9 ¶ And when I looked behold an hand was sent unto me and lo a roll of a book was therein 10 And he spread it before me and it was written within and without and there was written therein lamentations and mourning and wo. CHAP. III. 1 Ezekiel eateth the roll 4 God encourageth him 15 God sheweth him the rule of prophesie 22 God shutteth and openeth the prophets month MOreover he said unto me Son of man eat that thou findest eat this roll and go speak unto the house of Israel 2 So I opened my mouth and he caused me to eat that roll 3 And he said unto me Son of man cause thy belly to eat and fill thy bowels with this roll that I give thee Then did I * Rev. 10.9 eat it and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness 4 ¶ And he said unto me Son of man go get thee unto the house of Israel and speak with my words unto them 5 For thou art not sent to a people †Heb. deep of lip and heavy of tongue and so v. 6. of a strange speech and of an hard language but to the house of Israel 6 Not to many people †Heb. deep of lip and heavy of language of a strange speech and of an hard language whose words thou canst not understand ‖ Or if I had sent thee c. would they not have hearkned unto thee surely had I sent thee to them they would have hearkned unto thee 7 But the house of Israel will not hearken unto thee for they will not hearken unto me for all the house of Israel are †Heb. stiff of forehead and hard of bea rt impudent and hard-hearted 8 Behold I have made thy face strong against their faces and thy forehead strong against their foreheads 9 As an adamant harder then flint have I made thy forehead * Jer. 1.8 fear them not neither be dismayed at their looks though they be a rebellious house 10 Moreover he said unto me Son of man all my words that I shall speak unto thee receive in thine heart and hear with thine ears 11 And go get thee to them of the captivity unto the children of thy people and speak unto them and tell them Thus saith the Lord GOD whether they will hear or whether they will forbear 12 Then the spirit took me up and I heard behinde me a voice of a great rushing saying Blessed be the glory of the LORD from his place 13 I heard also the noise of the wings of the living creatures that †Heb. kissed touched one another and the noise of the wheels over against them and a noise of a great rushing 14 So the spirit listed me up and took me away and I went †Heb. bitter in bitterness in the †Heb. bot anger heat of my spirit but the hand of the LORD was strong upon me 15 ¶ Then I came
their quarters and divide their land by lot 37 So the king took the half of the forces that remained and departed from Antioch †Gr. a city of â—is kingdom his royal city the hundred fourty and seventh year and having passed the river Euphrates he went through the high countries 38 Then Lysias chose Ptolemee the son of Dorymenes and Nicanor and Gorgias mighty men of the kings friends 39 And with them he sent fourty thousand footmen and seven thousand horsmen to go into the land of Juda and to destroy it as the king commanded 40 So they went forth with all their power and came and pitched by Emmaus in the plain countrey 41 And the merchants of the countrey hearing the fame of them took silver and gold very much with ‖ Or fetters servants and came into the camp to buy the children of Israel for slaves a power also of Syria and of the land ‖ Or of strangers of the Philistines joyned themselves unto them 42 Now when Judas and his brethren saw that miseries were multiplied and that the forces did encamp themselves in their borders for they knew how the king had given commandment to destroy the people and utterly abolish them 43 They said one to another Let us restore the decayed estate of our people and let us fight for our people and the sanctuary 44 Then was the congregation gathered together that they might be ready for battel and that they might pray and ask mercy and compassion 45 Now Jerusalem lay void as a wilderness there was none of her children that went in or out the sanctuary also was troden down and aliens kept the strong hold the heathen had their habitation in that place and joy was taken from Jacob and the pipe with the harp ceased 46 Wherefore the Israelites assembled themselves together and came to ‖ Or Mitâ—pa Maspha over against Jerusalem for in Maspha was the place where they prayed aforetime in Israel 47 Then they fasted that day and put on sackcloth and cast ashes upon their heads and rent their clothes 48 And laid open the book of the law ‖ Or for the which the heathen had made diligent search that they might paint therein the likeness of their idols wherein the heathen had sought to paint the likeness of their images 49 They brought also the priests garments and the first-fruits and the tithes and the * Num. 6.2 Nazarites they stirred up who had accomplished their days 50 Then cried they with a loud voice toward heaven saying What shall we do with these and whither shall we carry them away 51 For thy sanctuary is troden down and profaned and thy priests are in heaviness and brought low 52 And so the heathen are assembled together against us to destroy us what things they imagine against us thou knowest 53 How shall we be able to stand against them except thou O God be our help 54 Then sounded they with trumpets and cryed with a loud voice 55 And after this Judas ordained captains over the people even captains over thousands and over hundreds and over fifties and over tens 56 But as for such as * Deut. 20.5 were building houses or had betrothed wives or were planting vineyards or * Judg. 7.3 were fearful those he commanded that they should return every man to his own house according to the law 57 So the camp removed and pitched upon the south-side of Emmaus 58 And Judas said Arm your selves and be valiant men and see that ye be in readiness against the morning that ye may fight with these nations that are assembled together against us to destroy us and our sanctuary 59 For it is better for us to die in battel then to behold the calamities of our people and our sanctuary 60 Nevertheless as the will of God is in heaven so let him do CHAP. IV. 6 Judas defeateth the plot 14 and forces of Gorgias 23 and spoileth their tents 34 and over throweth Lysias 45 He pulleth down the altar which the heathen had profaned and setteth up a new 60 and maketh a wall about Sion THen took Gorgias five thousand footmen and a thousand of the best horsâ—men and removed out of the camp by night 2 To the end he might rush in upon the camp of the Jews and smite them suddenly And the men of the fortress were his guides 3 Now when Judas heard thereof he himself removed and the valiant men with him that he might smite the kings army which was at Emmaus 4 While as yet the forces were dispersed from the camp 5 In the mean season came Gorgias by night into the camp of Judas and when he found no man there he sought them in the mountains for said he These fellows flee from us 6 But assoon as it was day Judas shewed himself in the plain with three thousand men who nevertheless had neither ‖ Or targetâ— armour nor swords to their minds 7 And they saw the camp of the heathen that it was strong and well harnessed and compassed round about with hors-men and these were expert of war 8 Then said Judas to the men that were with him Fear ye not their multitude neither be ye afraid of their assault 9 Remember how our fathers were delivered in the Red sea when Pharaoh pursued them with an army 10 Now therefore let us cry unto heaven if peradventure the Lord will have mercy upon us and remember the covenant of our fathers and destroy this host before our face this day 11 That so all the heathen may know that there is one who delivereth and saveth Israel 12 Then the strangers lift up their eyes and saw them coming over against them 13 Wherefore they went out of the camp to battel but they that were with Judas sounded their trumpets 14 So they joyned battel and the heathen being discomfited fled into the plain 15 Howbeit all the hindmost of them were slain with the sword for they pursued them unto †Gr. Assaremoth Gazera and unto the â—â—â—ins of Iduanea and Azotus and Jamma so that there were slain of them upon a three thousand men 16 This done Judas returned again with his host from pursuing them 17 And said to the people Be not greedy of the spoils in as much as there is a battel before us 18 And Gorgias and his host are here by us in the mountain but stand ye now against our enemies and overcome them and after this ye may boldly take the sâ—oils 19 As Judas was yet speaking these words there appeared a part of them looking out of the mountain 20 Who when they perceived that the Jews had put their host to flight and were burning the tents for the smoke that was seen declared what was done 21 When therefore they perceived these things they were sore afraid and seeing also the host of Judas in the plain ready to fight 22 They fled every one into the land oâ— strangers 23
full of the holy Ghost retumed from Jordan and was led by the spirit into the wilderness 2 Being fourty days tempted of the devil and in those days he did eat nothing and when they were ended he afterward hungred 3 And the devil said unto him It thou be the Son of God command this stone that it be made bread 4 And Jesus answered him saying It is written That man shall not live by bread alone but by every word of God 5 And the devil taking him up into an high mountain shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time 6 And the devil said unto him All this power will I give thee and the glory of them for that is delivered unto me and to whomsoever I will I give it 7 If thou therefore wilt ‖ Or fall down before me worship me all shall be thine 8 And Jesus answered and said unto him Get thee behinde me Satan for it is written Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and him onely shalt thou serve 9 And he brought him to Jerusalem and set him on a pinacle of the temple and said unto him If thou be the Son of God cast thyself down from hence 10 For it is written He shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee 11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone 12 And Jesus answering said unto him It is said Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God 13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation he departed from him for a season 14 ¶ And Jesus returned in the power of the spirit into Galilee and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about 15 And he taught in their synagogues being glorified of all 16 ¶ And he came to * Mat. 13.54 Nazareth wherâ— he had been brought up and as his custom was he went into the â—ynagogue on the sabbath-day and stood up for to read 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias and when he had opened the book he found the place where it was written 18 * Jsa 61.1 The spirit of the Lord is upon me because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted to preach deliverance to the captives and recovering of sight to the blinde to set at liberty them that are bruised 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book and he gave it again to the minister and sat down and the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastned on him 21 And he began to say unto them This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears 22 And all bare him witness and wondred at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth And they said Is not this Josephs son 23 And he said unto them Ye will surely say unto me this proverb Physician heal thyself whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum do also here in thy countrey 24 And he said Verily I say unto you No * Mat. 13.57 prophet is accepted in his own countrey 25 But I tell you of a truth * 1 Kin. 17.9 many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias when the heaven was shut up three years and six moneths when great famine was throughout all the land 26 But unto none of them was Elias sent save unto Sarepta a city of Sidon unto a woman that was a widow 27 * 2 Kin. 5.14 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet and none of them was cleansed saving Naaman the Syrian 28 And all they in the synagogue when they heard these things were filled with wrath 29 And rose up and thrust him out of the city and led him unto the ‖ Or edge brow of the hill whereon their city was built that they might cast him down headlong 30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way 31 And came down to Capernaum a city of Galilee and taught them on the sabbath-days 32 And they were astonished at his doctrine * Mat. 7.29 for his word was with power 33 ¶ * Mar. 1.23 And in the synagogue there was a man which had a spirit of an unclean devil and cried out with a loud voice 34 Saying ‖ Or Away Let us alone what have we to do with thee thou Jesus of Nazareth art thou come to destroy us I know thee who thou art the holy One of God 35 And Jesus rebuked him saying Hold thy peace and come out of him And when the devil had thrown him in the midst he came out of him and hurt him not 36 And they were all amazed and spake among themselves saying What a word is this for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits and they come out 37 And the fame of him went out into every place of the countrey round about 38 ¶ * Mat. 8.14 And he arose out of the synagogue and entred into Simons house and Simons wives mother was taken with a great fever and they besought him for her 39 And he stood over her and rebuked the fever and it left her And immediately she arose and ministred unto them 40 ¶ Now when the sun was setting all they that had any sick with divers V. 1 Christ teacheth the people out of Peters ship 4 in a miraculous taking of fishes sheweth how he will make him and his partners fishers of men 12 cleanseth the leper 16 prayeth in the wilderness 18 healeth one sick of the palsie 27 calleth Matthew the publican 29 eateth with sinners as being the physician of souls 34 foretelleth the fastings and afflictions of the apostles after his ascension 36 and likeneth faint-hearted and weak disciples to old bottles and worn garments ANd * Mat. 4.18 it came to pass that as the people preassed upon him to hear the word of God he stood by the lake of Gennesareth 2 And saw two ships standing by the lake but the fishermen were gone out of them and were washing their nets 3 And he entred into one of the ships which was Simons and
