heretic_n and_o schismatic_n themselves_o and_o even_o heathen_n and_o infidel_n who_o write_v against_o the_o christian_a religion_n have_v own_a these_o book_n to_o be_v write_v by_o those_o we_o for_o if_o there_o be_v any_o other_o tradition_n as_o universal_a as_o this_o of_o the_o book_n of_o holy_a scripture_n our_o church_n ready_o embrace_v it_o as_o before_o have_v be_v express_v command_n not_o to_o use_v vain_a repetition_n in_o pray_v as_o if_o we_o think_v to_o be_v hear_v for_o our_o much_o speak_n matt._n 6._o 7._o l._n so_o it_o seem_v true_o and_o nothing_o can_v be_v more_o weak_a and_o impertinent_a than_o what_o my_o author_n talk_v of_o say_v five_o pater-noster_n in_o honour_n of_o our_o saviour_n five_o wound_n he_o mean_v i_o suppose_v those_o in_o his_o hand_n and_o foot_n and_o that_o on_o his_o side_n but_o what_o he_o mean_v by_o our_o say_v the_o lords-prayer_n in_o honour_n to_o those_o wound_n i_o can_v well_o tell_v t._n nor_o can_v i_o resolve_v you_o he_o may_v as_o well_o talk_v of_o say_v it_o twelve_o time_n in_o honour_n of_o the_o twelve_o apostle_n and_o then_o seventy_o time_n for_o the_o seventy_o disciple_n and_o after_o that_o as_o oft_o as_o you_o please_v in_o honour_n of_o what_o you_o have_v a_o mind_n to_o for_o they_o forsooth_o have_v a_o certain_a peculiar_a manner_n of_o offer_v up_o their_o prayer_n to_o god_n in_o honour_n to_o other_o person_n and_o thing_n which_o i_o confess_v i_o be_o utter_o ignorant_a of_o nor_o do_v i_o think_v they_o themselves_o can_v give_v a_o rational_a account_n of_o commend_v for_o some_o other_o good_a quality_n can_v scarce_o read_v their_o latin_a service_n but_o let_v they_o be_v able_a to_o read_v never_o so_o well_o that_o will_v hardly_o prove_v all_o good_a which_o they_o do_v and_o if_o we_o speak_v of_o example_n i_o must_v confess_v i_o have_v much_o rather_o follow_v our_o saviour_n and_o his_o apostle_n than_o the_o pope_n and_o his_o cardinal_n l._n and_o so_o have_v i_o too_o but_o he_o say_v they_o have_v book_n of_o devotion_n as_o well_o as_o bead_n that_o both_o be_v good_a and_o variety_n delight_v t._n they_o have_v
need_v true_o to_o have_v some_o variety_n to_o refresh_v they_o for_o sure_o they_o can_v neither_o have_v much_o delight_n nor_o much_o profit_n from_o a_o tedious_a repetition_n of_o the_o same_o word_n over_o and_o over_o at_o the_o same_o time_n especial_o whilst_o some_o of_o they_o understand_v not_o what_o they_o say_v and_o do_v also_o say_v some_o such_o thing_n as_o will_v not_o much_o help_v their_o devotion_n though_o they_o be_v understand_v l._n he_o say_v there_o can_v be_v no_o better_a prayer_n than_o the_o paternoster_n the_o ave_fw-la and_o the_o creed_n t._n as_o to_o be_v indeed_o a_o most_o admirable_a form_n of_o prayer_n which_o may_v not_o only_o serve_v as_o a_o pattern_n to_o direct_v we_o how_o to_o pray_v but_o be_v also_o most_o proper_a and_o fit_a to_o be_v frequent_o use_v as_o a_o prayer_n and_o may_v very_o well_o be_v join_v with_o any_o other_o prayer_n which_o we_o make_v to_o almighty_a god_n but_o yet_o we_o must_v not_o think_v there_o be_v any_o devotion_n express_v or_o any_o advantage_n get_v by_o repeat_v it_o over_o so_o many_o time_n in_o a_o hour_n or_o a_o day_n as_o if_o there_o be_v some_o secret_a virtue_n and_o force_n in_o the_o bare_a rehearsal_n of_o the_o word_n whilst_o we_o little_a or_o nothing_o attend_v to_o the_o sense_n of_o they_o which_o be_v fit_a for_o magpie_n and_o parrot_n than_o for_o reasonable_a tend_v least_o to_o please_v the_o palate_n or_o pamper_v the_o flesh_n that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v in_o a_o better_a temper_n for_o religious_a duty_n and_o may_v have_v more_o time_n for_o our_o devotion_n more_o money_n for_o the_o poor_a and_o may_v both_o humble_a our_o soul_n and_o afflict_v and_o tame_v our_o body_n and_o govern_v our_o appetite_n for_o all_o this_o there_o be_v good_a reason_n such_o fast_v and_o abstinence_n administer_v to_o religion_n but_o then_o whether_o in_o your_o time_n of_o abstinence_n you_o eat_v a_o little_a flesh_n or_o a_o little_a fish_n whether_o with_o your_o fish_n you_o eat_v butter_n or_o oil_n whether_o you_o drink_v milk_n or_o small-beer_n and_o the_o like_a seem_v not_o of_o the_o least_o consequence_n on_o any_o religious_a account_n you_o be_v neither_o better_o nor_o worse_o for_o one_o or_o the_o other_o here_o you_o may_v well_o say_v meat_n commend_v we_o not_o to_o god_n that_o which_o enter_v into_o the_o mouth_n defile_v not_o the_o man_n l._n but_o to_o this_o he_o reply_v that_o the_o forbid_a fruit_n which_o our_o first_o parent_n taste_v though_o not_o evil_a in_o itself_o yet_o the_o eat_n of_o it_o be_v
