be_v often_o the_o punishment_n of_o other_o sin_n the_o sinner_n say_v he_o shall_v be_v take_v by_o she_o by_o the_o sinner_n be_v not_o mean_v every_o one_o that_o deserve_v that_o name_n for_o then_o all_o shall_v be_v take_v but_o by_o the_o sinner_n as_o be_v usual_a in_o scripture_n when_o that_o name_n be_v oppose_v to_o the_o godly_a or_o the_o upright_a person_n be_v mean_v one_o give_v up_o or_o give_v himself_o up_o to_o sin_n and_o make_v a_o trade_n of_o live_v in_o it_o such_o a_o man_n be_v just_o leave_v to_o fall_v into_o this_o most_o bitter_a and_o abominable_a sin_n of_o uncleanness_n hence_o learn_v 1._o whatever_o dissatisfaction_n sincere_a student_n of_o save_v knowledge_n may_v have_v with_o their_o measure_n they_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o find_v success_n in_o that_o which_o tend_v most_o to_o their_o true_a happiness_n and_o to_o the_o prevent_n of_o their_o eternal_a ruin_n for_o solomon_n have_v regret_v his_o short-coming_a in_o the_o study_n of_o wisdom_n before_o can_v but_o acknowledge_v that_o he_o be_v not_o altogether_o unsuccesful_a and_o i_o find_v more_o bitter_a etc._n etc._n 2._o to_o feel_v experimental_o the_o bitterness_n of_o sin_n and_o to_o have_v a_o lively_a representation_n of_o the_o hazard_n of_o live_v in_o it_o be_v not_o the_o least_o part_n of_o the_o success_n of_o man_n pain_n for_o save_v knowledge_n for_o without_o this_o they_o can_v know_v nothing_o saving_o therefore_o this_o be_v one_o instance_n which_o solomon_n express_v as_o a_o bless_a fruit_n of_o his_o pain_n that_o he_o find_v sinful_a pleasure_n more_o bitter_a than_o death_n 3._o however_o sinner_n apprehend_v much_o pleasure_n in_o sin_n when_o they_o commit_v it_o yet_o there_o be_v a_o woeful_a sting_n afterward_o and_o much_o bitterness_n in_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o it_o every_o penitent_n find_v it_o in_o mercy_n so_o bitter_a to_o he_o when_o his_o conscience_n be_v waken_v that_o he_o will_v rather_o venture_v upon_o temporal_a death_n than_o enjoy_v his_o sinful_a pleasure_n again_o and_o impenitent_a sinner_n find_v it_o so_o in_o wrath_n here_o sometime_o by_o the_o sting_n of_o a_o accuse_a conscience_n especial_o while_o poverty_n disgrace_n and_o loathsome_a disease_n make_v their_o life_n bitter_a be_v upon_o they_o prov._n 5.11_o and_o always_o at_o death_n and_o after_o it_o to_o eternity_n eccles_n 12.1_o etc._n etc._n so_o that_o all_o that_o ever_o take_v pleasure_n in_o sin_n shall_v be_v
consider_v that_o when_o god_n appoint_v time_n of_o call_v for_o it_o comes_z he_o will_v have_v no_o power_n over_o it_o to_o retain_v it_o for_o this_o be_v a_o argument_n for_o the_o study_n of_o heavenly_a wisdom_n and_o respect_n to_o god_n command_n man_n have_v no_o power_n over_o the_o spirit_n to_o retain_v it_o 3._o however_o man_n of_o great_a natural_a spirit_n especial_o such_o as_o be_v transport_v with_o the_o desire_n of_o esteem_n for_o magnanimity_n and_o courage_n may_v seem_v to_o defy_v death_n and_o not_o to_o fear_v it_o while_o they_o be_v not_o come_v to_o combat_n with_o it_o yet_o so_o terrible_a be_v it_o to_o all_o that_o have_v not_o make_v their_o peace_n with_o god_n and_o so_o make_v sure_a to_o themselves_o a_o better_a life_n that_o when_o it_o draw_v near_o they_o will_v have_v strong_a desire_n to_o retain_v their_o spirit_n a_o while_n long_o and_o to_o have_v a_o discharge_v from_o the_o combat_n with_o death_n they_o have_v nothing_o to_o comfort_n and_o strengthen_v they_o against_o the_o king_n of_o terror_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o second_o death_n which_o be_v at_o the_o back_n of_o the_o first_o for_o this_o be_v speak_v to_o shake_v man_n out_o of_o their_o security_n who_o neglect_v the_o study_n of_o heavenly_a wisdom_n and_o preparation_n for_o death_n no_o man_n have_v power_n over_o the_o spirit_n to_o retain_v the_o spirit_n neither_o be_v there_o any_o discharge_n in_o that_o war._n 4._o it_o be_v the_o great_a misery_n of_o wicked_a man_n to_o be_v peremptory_o call_v to_o render_v their_o spirit_n and_o utter_o unwilling_a to_o part_v with_o they_o to_o be_v call_v to_o combat_n with_o the_o king_n of_o terror_n and_o to_o have_v neither_o courage_n nor_o comfort_n in_o enter_v the_o the_o list_n with_o he_o and_o this_o be_v the_o case_n of_o all_o who_o be_v destitut_v of_o save_a wisdom_n the_o consideration_n whereof_o shall_v incite_v man_n to_o study_v reconciliation_n with_o god_n and_o a_o holy_a walk_n which_o breed_v willingness_n to_o die_v and_o comfort_n in_o death_n for_o as_o a_o proof_n of_o man_n misery_n speak_v of_o before_o this_o be_v bring_v in_o no_o man_n have_v power_n to_o retain_v the_o spirit_n it_o suppose_v man_n very_o desirous_a to_o retain_v it_o even_o when_o he_o must_v part_v with_o it_o 5._o man_n spirit_n that_o be_v now_o rebellious_a against_o god_n and_o in_o a_o continual_a motion_n contrary_a to_o his_o reveal_v will_n must_v when_o death_n come_v move_v at_o his_o command_n they_o must_v flit_v out_o of_o the_o body_n and_o sist_z themselves_o before_o the_o judge_n to_o be_v at_o his_o disposal_n the_o consideration_n whereof_o shall_v deter_v man_n from_o their_o sinful_a course_n for_o no_o man_n have_v power_n over_o the_o spirit_n to_o retain_v the_o spirit_n 6._o while_o man_n have_v natural_a strength_n and_o vigour_n they_o shall_v spend_v the_o same_o in_o these_o exercise_n the_o remembrance_n whereof_o may_v comfort_v they_o in_o death_n for_o when_o death_n draw_v near_o man_n become_v impotent_a not_o only_o to_o resist_v death_n but_o to_o prepare_v for_o it_o not_o only_o have_v he_o no_o power_n to_o prosecute_v his_o lust_n far_o but_o no_o power_n for_o these_o spiritual_a exercise_n which_o he_o put_v off_o to_o the_o day_n of_o his_o death_n for_o solomon_n give_v this_o as_o a_o argument_n for_o the_o study_n of_o heavenly_a wisdom_n neither_o have_v he_o power_n in_o the_o day_n of_o death_n 7._o as_o every_o man_n will_v have_v a_o sore_a conflict_n and_o a_o hot_a battle_n with_o death_n so_o there_o be_v no_o man_n with_o never_o so_o much_o power_n or_o policy_n not_o the_o great_a on_o earth_n who_o can_v have_v a_o discharge_v or_o exemption_n from_o engage_v in_o the_o combat_n with_o it_o therefore_o man_n have_v need_v to_o get_v the_o breast_n plate_n of_o faith_n and_o for_o a_o helmet_n the_o hope_n of_o salvation_n and_o to_o study_v a_o wise_a carriage_n in_o a_o evil_a world_n especial_o when_o they_o have_v to_o do_v with_o wicked_a man_n in_o power_n and_o authority_n lest_o by_o their_o miscarriage_n they_o engage_v themselves_o needless_o in_o that_o war_n for_o there_o be_v no_o discharge_n in_o that_o war._n 8._o mortal_a man_n can_v hardly_o be_v bring_v to_o have_v serious_a thought_n of_o the_o necessity_n of_o death_n and_o the_o impossibility_n of_o shift_v the_o combat_n with_o it_o they_o live_v as_o if_o they_o can_v retain_v their_o spirit_n for_o ever_o and_o forget_v to_o take_v their_o armour_n to_o they_o as_o if_o they_o be_v never_o to_o fight_v with_o the_o king_n of_o terror_n therefore_o the_o necessity_n of_o it_o and_o impossibility_n of_o escape_v it_o be_v here_o set_v forth_o by_o so_o many_o expression_n no_o man_n have_v power_n over_o the_o spirit_n to_o retain_v the_o spirit_n no_o man_n have_v power_n in_o the_o day_n of_o death_n neither_o be_v there_o any_o discharge_v in_o that_o war._n 9_o when_o wicked_a man_n have_v have_v success_n in_o their_o sinful_a course_n so_o far_o as_o by_o they_o to_o escape_v temporal_a hazard_n for_o a_o time_n they_o do_v they_o go_v on_o as_o confident_o in_o they_o as_o if_o they_o will_v always_o deliver_v they_o as_o be_v import_v in_o this_o threaten_n which_o contradict_v man_n ordinary_a apprehension_n neither_o shall_v wickedness_n deliver_v those_o that_o be_v give_v to_o it_o 10._o whatever_o be_v man_n apprehension_n of_o safety_n by_o their_o sinful_a course_n they_o shall_v be_v so_o far_o from_o deliver_v they_o at_o last_o that_o they_o shall_v bring_v total_a and_o terrible_a destruction_n upon_o they_o for_o such_o spare_a expression_n in_o scripture_n speak_v against_o wicked_a man_n import_n much_o more_o than_o be_v express_v even_o the_o contrary_a affirmative_a in_o the_o superlative_a degree_n neither_o shall_v wickedness_n deliver_v those_o that_o be_v give_v to_o it_o import_v no_o less_o than_o that_o it_o shall_v bring_v utter_a destruction_n from_o which_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o escape_n to_o all_o eternity_n 11._o however_o all_o unregenerat_a man_n rise_v not_o to_o a_o like_a height_n of_o wickedness_n yet_o all_o of_o they_o be_v restless_a in_o commit_v of_o the_o same_o they_o can_v sleep_v unless_o they_o do_v mischief_n or_o provoke_v other_o so_o to_o do_v as_o the_o word_n wickedness_n signify_v they_o be_v expert_a in_o sin_n and_o wed_v to_o their_o lust_n as_o if_o they_o have_v make_v a_o marriage_n covenant_n with_o they_o as_o the_o word_n translate_v that_o be_v give_v to_o it_o signify_v wickedness_n shall_v not_o deliver_v those_o that_o be_v give_v to_o it_o 12._o though_o any_o degree_n of_o wickedness_n continue_v in_o will_v bring_v destruction_n upon_o man_n yet_o of_o all_o sinner_n there_o be_v least_o hope_n of_o the_o salvation_n of_o they_o who_o be_v become_v restless_a and_o unwearied_a in_o sin_v and_o so_o pour_v out_o their_o affection_n upon_o their_o lust_n as_o if_o they_o be_v wed_v to_o they_o for_o so_o be_v the_o word_n in_o the_o original_a wickedness_n or_o turbulence_n and_o restlessness_n in_o sin_n shall_v not_o deliver_v they_o that_o be_v give_v or_o have_v wed_v or_o marry_v themselves_o unto_o it_o ver._n 9_o all_o this_o have_v i_o see_v and_o apply_v my_o heart_n to_o every_o work_n that_o his_o mind_n as_o in_o a_o glass_n that_o he_o may_v represent_v the_o same_o to_o the_o church_n the_o misery_n of_o they_o that_o want_v that_o wisdom_n which_o be_v from_o above_o and_o the_o sweet_a advantage_n of_o they_o that_o have_v it_o former_o mention_v next_o he_o commend_v his_o experience_n from_o the_o great_a pain_n he_o take_v in_o study_v the_o lord_n dispensation_n he_o apply_v his_o heart_n his_o understanding_n and_o affection_n be_v take_v up_o how_o to_o profit_v in_o this_o study_n and_o the_o book_n he_o read_v upon_o be_v a_o very_a large_a volume_n all_o
