old_a and_o the_o christian_n of_o his_o own_o time_n but_o as_o for_o our_o saviour_n miracle_n upon_o which_o the_o whole_a controversy_n depend_v he_o do_v not_o so_o much_o as_o undertake_v to_o contradict_v they_o but_o only_o say_v that_o it_o be_v no_o such_o wonderful_a thing_n in_o he_o to_o cure_v the_o lame_a and_o the_o blind_a see_v therefore_o he_o have_v not_o so_o much_o as_o meddle_v with_o the_o main_a argument_n of_o christianity_n the_o matter_n of_o fact_n the_o evidence_n of_o that_o alone_o must_v of_o itself_o baffle_v all_o other_o attempt_v at_o least_o till_o that_o be_v consider_v all_o other_o consideration_n be_v short_a of_o the_o argument_n so_o that_o this_o alone_a may_v suffice_v as_o a_o answer_n to_o all_o his_o cavil_n to_o refer_v he_o to_o the_o matter_n of_o fact_n and_o if_o that_o prove_v itself_o true_a he_o can_v prove_v nothing_o but_o if_o it_o do_v not_o he_o need_v prove_v nothing_o it_o sink_v of_o its_o own_o accord_n §_o xliii_o however_o if_o they_o have_v any_o cavil_n that_o may_v seem_v to_o have_v any_o appearance_n of_o reason_n in_o they_o they_o be_v all_o rake_v together_o by_o celsus_n the_o epicurean_a who_o of_o all_o the_o enemy_n to_o christianity_n be_v both_o the_o bold_a and_o the_o able_a as_o appear_v with_o less_o folly_n and_o more_o malice_n for_o be_v a_o atheist_n and_o so_o not_o at_o thing_n that_o they_o will_v admit_v of_o in_o their_o philosophy_n and_o therefore_o when_o they_o have_v so_o brave_o deliver_v all_o wise_a man_n that_o be_v themselves_z from_o the_o fear_n of_o a_o divine_a providence_n and_o the_o care_n of_o a_o future_a state_n it_o can_v not_o but_o be_v a_o very_a grate_a provocation_n upon_o man_n of_o their_o proud_a peevish_a and_o ill-natured_a principle_n to_o have_v so_o clear_a a_o baffle_v put_v upon_o all_o their_o wisdom_n and_o that_o in_o their_o own_o way_n and_o as_o this_o be_v the_o main_a motive_n of_o the_o peculiar_a displeasure_n of_o the_o sadducee_n against_o the_o apostle_n among_o the_o jew_n so_o no_o doubt_n it_o wrought_v the_o same_o effect_n upon_o man_n of_o the_o same_o principle_n among_o the_o heathen_n but_o of_o all_o other_o celsus_n seem_v to_o have_v be_v most_o angry_a at_o the_o defeat_n and_o therefore_o lay_v about_o he_o to_o load_v it_o with_o all_o the_o cavil_n and_o calumny_n that_o wit_n or_o malice_n can_v invent_v and_o for_o the_o great_a plenty_n of_o objection_n he_o take_v upon_o himself_o a_o double_a person_n of_o a_o jew_n and_o of_o a_o heathen_a though_o the_o truth_n be_v he_o personate_v the_o jew_n full_a as_o awkerd_o as_o the_o ass_n do_v the_o lion_n in_o the_o lion_n skin_n his_o epicurean_a ear_n every_o where_o show_v themselves_o through_o his_o jewish_a livery_n and_o he_o be_v so_o eager_a in_o his_o pursuit_n of_o christianity_n that_o at_o every_o turn_n he_o forget_v the_o person_n he_o bear_v and_o fall_v as_o foul_a upon_o the_o jew_n themselves_o as_o the_o christian_n we_o shall_v engage_v he_o in_o both_o his_o shape_n and_o leave_v it_o to_o any_o impartial_a either_o jew_n or_o heathen_a to_o judge_v of_o the_o reasonableness_n and_o validity_n of_o his_o discourse_n his_o two_o great_a batter_a engine_n that_o he_o plant_v in_o all_o part_n of_o it_o we_o have_v already_o dismount_v viz._n his_o impute_v our_o saviour_n miracle_n to_o the_o power_n of_o magic_n and_o his_o vie_v the_o resurrection_n of_o other_o in_o heathen_a story_n with_o that_o of_o our_o saviour_n and_o by_o this_o mean_v we_o have_v already_o dispatch_v the_o great_a part_n of_o our_o business_n for_o be_v conscious_a to_o himself_o of_o the_o slightness_n of_o most_o of_o his_o cavil_n he_o at_o every_o turn_n
