A85043 The churches and ministery of England, true churches and true ministery. Cleared, and proved, in a sermon / preach'd the 4th of May at Wiviliscombe; before a numerous congregation assembled together to hear the opposition, which had been long threatned to be made that day, by Mr Collier and others of his party, who, with the greatest strength the West would afford them, were present at the sermon. Wherein were these five things undeniably proved: 1. That a mixture of prophane and scandalous persons with reall saints, is not inconsistent with the Church of God or a true church. ... 5. And then, they also must needs be guilty, who forsake true churches and a lawfull ministry, to follow and hear unsent preachers. By Francis Fullwood minister of the Gospel at Staple Fitzpane in the county of Somerset. Before it there is an epistle and preface, shewing the manner, and a narrative subjoyned shewing the substance of the dispute after the sermon, (both which lasted nine hours.) Set forth by the ministers that were at the dispute, and attested under their hands. Fullwood, Francis, d. 1693.; Darby, Charls.; Collier, Thomas, fl. 1691. 1652 (1652) Wing F2498; Thomason E671_2; ESTC R202166 72,915 100

that_o of_o infant_n baptism_n hereupon_o swift_a notice_n be_v give_v to_o all_o or_o the_o most_o part_n of_o the_o sectarian_n of_o the_o west_n in_o the_o mean_a time_n many_o threaten_a and_o insult_a speech_n be_v give_v out_o by_o that_o party_n as_o that_o no_o presbyterian_a minister_n dare_v show_v his_o head_n there_o with_o much_o to_o that_o purpose_n nor_o be_v any_o thing_n more_o rife_a in_o every_o man_n mouth_n than_o the_o future_a dispute_n at_o wivili●combe_n the_o day_n be_v come_v and_o a_o great_a congregation_n assemble_v the_o discourse_n which_o hereafter_o be_v present_v be_v public_o deliver_v yet_o as_o a_o lecture-sermon_n only_o however_o thou_o may_v easy_o perceive_v by_o the_o drift_n thereof_o that_o the_o preacher_n intend_v it_o as_o a_o antidote_n against_o error_n and_o as_o a_o muzzle_n for_o the_o mouth_n of_o they_o that_o come_v to_o oppose_v while_o he_o be_v pray_v before_o sermon_n collier_n come_v in_o guarded_z as_o it_o be_v with_o some_o soldier_n and_o a_o great_a company_n of_o his_o furious_a disciple_n it_o be_v much_o wonder_v that_o he_o shall_v so_o patient_o hear_v out_o so_o unpleasing_a a_o discourse_n but_o we_o have_v cause_n to_o think_v that_o the_o strength_n of_o reason_n there_o urge_v and_o deliver_v do_v so_o daunt_v and_o confound_v he_o that_o he_o dare_v not_o interrupt_v his_o courage_n be_v much_o quail_v and_o his_o mind_n distract_v through_o fear_n lest_o he_o shall_v not_o in_o all_o that_o day_n dispute_v raze_v out_o that_o deep_a impression_n which_o that_o sermon_n have_v strange_o amuse_v even_o honest_a man_n of_o the_o simple_a sort_n who_o have_v never_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o impudent_a boldness_n of_o heretic_n 2._o they_o will_v not_o suffer_v mr_n howe_n require_v mr_n fullwood_n to_o maintain_v what_o he_o have_v deliver_v they_o hope_v to_o have_v foil_v he_o who_o have_v be_v tire_v with_o a_o two_o hour_n preach_v and_o come_v nothing_o prepare_v they_o think_v themselves_o invincible_a but_o yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o disadvantage_n of_o the_o question_n and_o the_o confidence_n of_o the_o adversary_n they_o be_v charge_v so_o home_o that_o they_o be_v beat_v out_o of_o their_o place_n of_o strength_n and_o utter_o rout_v as_o the_o narrative_n will_v show_v 4._o they_o will_v ever_o and_o anon_o appeal_v to_o the_o people_n stentorean_a voice_n and_o plausible_a speech_n do_v much_o more_o prevail_v upon_o ignorant_a soul_n than_o the_o strong_a reason_n or_o the_o most_o forcible_a argument_n the_o apostle_n have_v
