of_o worship_v &_o serve_v god_n may_v not_o be_v take_v for_o a_o bare_a matter_n of_o knowledge_n as_o the_o most_o do_v make_v it_o or_o which_o be_v little_a better_o for_o a_o serve_v of_o god_n by_o half_n as_o too_o many_o professor_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v use_v it_o but_o for_o a_o faithful_a regard_v of_o our_o way_n that_o they_o may_v be_v shape_v out_o after_o god_n will_n treatise_n now_o this_o practise_v of_o the_o godly_a life_n be_v perform_v by_o follow_v a_o daily_a direction_n to_o guide_v we_o and_o while_o we_o do_v every_o day_n with_o conscience_n set_v ourselves_o to_o honour_n and_o obey_v god_n as_o in_o our_o calling_n and_o by_o other_o occasion_n offer_v we_o shall_v be_v able_a and_o not_o wander_o and_o uncertain_o as_o we_o have_v be_v wont_a to_o do_v and_o so_o this_o shall_v be_v set_v down_o in_o the_o four_o treatise_n and_o this_o be_v one_o of_o the_o point_n in_o this_o book_n which_o require_v to_o be_v read_v again_o and_o again_o as_o be_v neither_o common_o entreat_v of_o and_o of_o singular_a use_n to_o such_o as_o desire_v to_o take_v good_a by_o it_o especial_o not_o be_v able_a otherwise_o to_o guide_v themselves_o treatise_n in_o the_o five_o i_o make_v the_o reader_n acquaint_v with_o the_o let_n which_o will_v hinder_v he_o though_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v direct_v daily_o from_o this_o course_n except_o he_o will_v be_v persuade_v to_o arm_v himself_o with_o such_o help_n as_o whereby_o he_o may_v withstand_v they_o and_o remedy_n against_o these_o let_n shall_v in_o this_o five_o treatise_n be_v set_v down_o as_o far_o as_o shall_v be_v think_v expedient_a treatise_n the_o six_o shall_v set_v before_o thou_o sundry_a privilege_n and_o blessing_n which_o god_n do_v peculiar_o bequeath_v unto_o and_o bestow_v upon_o his_o beloved_a one_o beside_o such_o benefit_n as_o they_o have_v in_o common_a with_o the_o man_n of_o the_o world_n by_o the_o which_o as_o by_o other_o reason_n the_o faithful_a may_v see_v themselves_o persuade_v treatise_n with_o much_o more_o chearefulnes_n and_o great_a willingness_n to_o lead_v a_o christian_n life_n daily_a and_o to_o shine_v as_o light_n in_o example_n to_o other_o in_o the_o seven_o and_o last_o such_o objection_n as_o may_v be_v bring_v and_o allege_v by_o any_o either_o weak_a christian_n or_o carnal_a caviller_n against_o the_o practise_n of_o the_o daily_a direction_n shall_v be_v sufficient_o answer_v that_o thereby_o the_o truth_n appear_v more_o clear_o many_o such_o as_o desire_v unfeigned_o to_o do_v well_o and_o yet_o have_v not_o learned_a to_o guide_v themselves_o by_o any_o plain_a direction_n out_o of_o the_o scripture_n may_v have_v this_o as_o a_o help_n unto_o they_o to_o see_v that_o which_o the_o scripture_n have_v reveal_v hereof_o all_o which_o though_o i_o direct_v not_o this_o work_n to_o the_o unreformed_a may_v be_v in_o stead_n of_o a_o exhortation_n unto_o all_o loose_a and_o careless_a person_n though_o more_o brief_o see_v there_o be_v enough_o write_v of_o that_o argument_n to_o move_v they_o to_o rouse_v up_o themselves_o and_o to_o awake_v out_o of_o their_o deadly_a sleep_n and_o not_o to_o cast_v away_o their_o soul_n for_o the_o love_n of_o their_o sin_n which_o they_o may_v be_v sure_a that_o god_n will_v find_v out_o howsoever_o they_o hide_v they_o but_o to_o seek_v betimes_o that_o they_o be_v unburthen_v of_o they_o cast_v they_o up_o as_o a_o most_o filthy_a gorge_n and_o avoid_v the_o vengeance_n of_o god_n wrath_n which_o will_v otherwise_o most_o sure_o come_v upon_o they_o for_o it_o for_o though_o sin_n be_v sweet_a in_o the_o commit_n of_o it_o yet_o it_o will_v be_v bitter_a when_o it_o come_v to_o be_v repent_v of_o and_o most_o bitter_a when_o without_o repentance_n it_o must_v be_v account_v for_o profit_n now_o it_o remain_v to_o direct_v the_o reader_n how_o to_o bestow_v his_o time_n profitable_o herein_o and_o how_o he_o may_v read_v it_o to_o his_o benefit_n for_o i_o doubt_v nothing_o but_o he_o that_o shall_v be_v conversant_a in_o it_o desire_v to_o be_v direct_v in_o his_o course_n shall_v think_v his_o time_n well_o spend_v so_o as_o he_o be_v help_v to_o understand_v the_o same_o first_o therefore_o let_v he_o read_v the_o content_n of_o it_o brief_o set_v down_o in_o the_o table_n before_o the_o book_n to_o help_v his_o memory_n then_o the_o marginal_a note_n of_o the_o chapter_n and_o if_o he_o conceive_v and_o understand_v the_o short_a sum_n of_o it_o so_o set_v down_o then_o let_v he_o read_v the_o book_n itself_o till_o he_o be_v acquaint_v with_o and_o understand_v it_o wherein_o if_o his_o capacity_n be_v the_o weak_a and_o shallow_a he_o must_v desire_v the_o help_n of_o some_o which_o be_v more_o skilful_a and_o better_a able_a to_o see_v the_o drift_n scope_n and_o meaning_n of_o it_o than_o himself_o especial_o in_o such_o point_n of_o it_o as_o be_v more_o hard_a and_o difficult_a either_o to_o

acquaint_v with_o the_o practice_n of_o it_o therefore_o i_o know_v they_o shall_v have_v need_n thereof_o now_o when_o they_o shall_v understand_v it_o in_o some_o good_a sort_n let_v they_o weigh_v and_o consider_v how_o far_o forth_o they_o have_v have_v use_n of_o it_o heretofore_o as_o whether_o they_o have_v according_a to_o the_o first_o part_n of_o this_o book_n by_o the_o ministry_n of_o any_o sound_a preacher_n of_o the_o gospel_n attain_v to_o the_o assurance_n of_o their_o salvation_n and_o of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o their_o sin_n wherein_o if_o any_o will_v take_v it_o as_o without_o the_o use_n of_o it_o in_o their_o life_n whatsoever_o they_o hope_v for_o and_o therefore_o such_o i_o advise_v to_o take_v most_o pain_n in_o the_o first_o part_n i_o mean_v in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o it_o and_o read_v other_o treatise_n concern_v the_o matter_n as_o master_n mores_n and_o other_o catechism_n and_o master_n perkins_n work_v namely_o his_o book_n entitle_v the_o grain_n of_o mustard_n seed_n and_o to_o raise_v all_o the_o doubt_n they_o can_v to_o any_o experience_a teacher_n or_o brother_n and_o to_o look_v for_o and_o see_v those_o thing_n work_v upon_o they_o which_o be_v teach_v there_o both_o the_o doctrine_n of_o humiliation_n and_o also_o of_o justification_n and_o deliverance_n if_o this_o be_v attain_v let_v they_o consider_v for_o the_o better_a assure_v themselves_o hereof_o that_o they_o can_v but_o affect_v love_n embrace_v and_o delight_n in_o the_o doctrine_n of_o sanctification_n and_o repentance_n from_o dead_a work_n i_o mean_v they_o shall_v desire_v to_o practice_v the_o godly_a and_o christian_n life_n when_o they_o see_v that_o it_o be_v the_o commandment_n of_o he_o who_o love_v they_o most_o dear_o and_o what_o it_o be_v and_o wherein_o it_o consist_v which_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o the_o second_o treatise_n of_o this_o book_n and_o to_o this_o end_n let_v they_o read_v and_o by_o mark_v seek_v as_o such_o who_o will_v find_v that_o they_o may_v see_v what_o sin_n there_o be_v in_o they_o which_o they_o be_v not_o willing_a nor_o desirous_a to_o forsake_v if_o there_o be_v any_o or_o among_o duty_n general_o appertain_v to_o all_o or_o particular_o touch_v themselves_o which_o they_o can_v submit_v themselves_o unto_o if_o there_o be_v either_o of_o these_o find_v in_o they_o as_o that_o they_o account_n of_o we_o 5.18_o and_o conscience_n make_v of_o one_o as_o well_o as_o of_o another_o which_o if_o they_o see_v and_o acknowledge_v according_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n they_o can_v but_o submit_v themselves_o thereunto_o if_o they_o have_v right_o embrace_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o former_a treatise_n that_o as_o in_o judgement_n and_o knowledge_n they_o yield_v so_o their_o heart_n and_o affection_n may_v go_v with_o the_o same_o and_o so_o do_v god_n will_v work_v in_o they_o by_o little_a and_o little_a seek_v it_o by_o prayer_n of_o faith_n even_o as_o he_o wrought_v the_o like_a in_o they_o before_o and_o weaken_v such_o rebelliousnes_n in_o their_o heart_n already_o if_o therefore_o the_o teachable_a and_o christian_n reader_n be_v thus_o far_o wrought_v upon_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o he_o thus_o favour_n approve_v and_o give_v over_o himself_o to_o be_v make_v true_o repentant_a which_o be_v that_o that_o be_v require_v in_o the_o second_o treatise_n of_o this_o book_n then_o be_v he_o fit_a to_o occupy_v himself_o about_o and_o to_o be_v conversant_a in_o the_o three_o and_o four_o part_n of_o it_o that_o be_v to_o say_v in_o the_o doctrine_n which_o require_v a_o daily_a walk_n in_o a_o christian_a course_n by_o the_o use_n of_o such_o help_n as_o be_v appoint_v of_o god_n for_o that_o purpose_n and_o some_o of_o they_o also_o daily_o as_o in_o the_o proper_a place_n shall_v appear_v for_o every_o true_a christian_a be_v to_o know_v that_o the_o religion_n and_o worship_n of_o god_n must_v be_v in_o use_n and_o practice_v among_o the_o imbracer_n of_o it_o as_o well_o one_o day_n as_o another_o but_o how_o shall_v any_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v his_o heart_n in_o frame_n and_o reform_v his_o life_n daily_o by_o the_o mean_n which_o god_n have_v appoint_v as_o in_o the_o three_o and_o four_o part_n of_o this_o book_n be_v require_v except_o he_o be_v first_o a_o like_a and_o a_o allower_n of_o all_o know_a point_n of_o duty_n and_o do_v hearty_o renounce_v all_o evil_a as_o be_v require_v in_o the_o second_o part_n which_o be_v do_v let_v he_o look_v to_o grow_v daily_o more_o strong_a in_o faith_n whereby_o he_o may_v hold_v and_o keep_v fast_o the_o certainty_n of_o god_n favour_n daily_o and_o constant_o and_o not_o as_o too_o many_o and_o yet_o the_o people_n of_o god_n do_v who_o be_v not_o acquaint_v with_o this_o that_o their_o confidence_n shall_v be_v maintain_v daily_o or_o a_o good_a conscience_n in_o their_o particular_a action_n regard_v and_o that_o on_o one_o day_n as_o another_o but_o think_v it_o enough_o at_o sometime_o to_o have_v this_o care_n neither_o let_v any_o look_v to_o repel_v this_o as_o too_o strict_a under_o pretence_n of_o weighty_a affair_n and_o their_o own_o infirmity_n for_o this_o be_v but_o the_o delusion_n of_o the_o devil_n as_o shall_v be_v show_v who_o will_v easy_o persuade_v it_o to_o be_v more_o than_o need_v this_o be_v that_o which_o must_v be_v learn_v out_o of_o the_o three_o and_o four_o part_n and_o when_o this_o be_v understand_v approve_a consent_v unto_o and_o aim_v at_o the_o five_o part_n of_o the_o book_n shall_v be_v clear_a and_o easy_a to_o understand_v and_o what_o use_n he_o shall_v make_v of_o it_o namely_o of_o the_o let_v and_o hindrance_n which_o the_o devil_n raise_v up_o to_o hold_v he_o back_o from_o this_o course_n of_o life_n and_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o same_o of_o the_o which_o some_o i_o will_v set_v down_o and_o help_v he_o the_o better_a to_o know_v many_o other_o thereby_o and_o he_o that_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o direct_v his_o life_n and_o take_v heed_n to_o his_o way_n as_o he_o shall_v by_o god_n word_n be_v teach_v shall_v break_v through_o many_o of_o the_o let_v which_o yet_o shall_v strong_o hold_v back_o and_o hinder_v other_o man_n as_o the_o five_o part_n will_v show_v and_o if_o he_o be_v for_o a_o season_n withdraw_v from_o a_o godly_a course_n yet_o he_o shall_v there_o find_v help_n and_o remedy_n to_o recover_v again_o and_o little_a ease_n otherwise_o and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o difficulty_n in_o conform_v a_o man_n self_n after_o this_o forementioned_a doctrine_n as_o i_o deny_v not_o but_o the_o flesh_n will_v find_v many_o yet_o against_o they_o all_o let_v he_o proceed_v and_o read_v with_o good_a regard_n the_o six_o treatise_n wherein_o be_v set_v down_o the_o manifold_a and_o goodly_a prerogative_n and_o privilege_n which_o god_n have_v bequeath_v to_o his_o people_n to_o hearten_v they_o on_o and_o encourage_v they_o to_o godliness_n and_o to_o make_v the_o christian_n life_n easy_a and_o he_o shall_v see_v great_a light_n and_o find_v exceed_a force_n therein_o to_o stir_v he_o up_o to_o go_v forward_o mighty_o against_o all_o faint_a and_o then_o he_o shall_v not_o be_v move_v for_o all_o the_o objection_n cavil_n and_o fleshly_a reason_n which_o he_o shall_v read_v in_o the_o seven_o part_n for_o the_o comfort_n and_o experience_n which_o he_o shall_v partly_o enjoy_v
public_a can_v be_v daily_o have_v and_o enjoy_v and_o yet_o we_o need_v daily_a relief_n and_o help_n neither_o although_o they_o can_v be_v they_o sufficient_a to_o enable_v we_o they_o to_o honour_n god_n as_o it_o become_v we_o therefore_o god_n have_v command_v we_o to_o use_v private_a exercise_n whereof_o these_o eight_o be_v chief_a first_o watchfulness_n meditation_n and_o the_o armour_n of_o a_o christian_a unto_o the_o which_o be_v to_o be_v add_v our_o own_o experience_n and_o these_o proper_o belong_v to_o every_o one_o alone_a by_o himself_o the_o next_o be_v the_o use_n of_o company_n by_o conference_n and_o family_n exercise_v and_o these_o be_v proper_o to_o be_v use_v of_o a_o man_n self_n with_o other_o the_o last_o two_o which_o be_v prayer_n and_o read_v be_v common_a to_o both_o the_o necessity_n whereof_o be_v so_o great_a private_a that_o if_o they_o be_v not_o know_v and_o use_v right_o and_o in_o good_a sort_n the_o public_a will_v prove_v but_o unprofitable_a and_o the_o whole_a life_n out_o of_o square_a as_o shall_v be_v see_v when_o we_o come_v to_o handle_v and_o speak_v more_o particular_o of_o the_o right_a use_n of_o they_o and_o of_o the_o help_n or_o mean_n to_o continue_v a_o godly_a life_n which_o they_o be_v and_o the_o kind_n of_o they_o thus_o much_o be_v say_v now_o i_o will_v as_o i_o promise_v in_o the_o entrance_n into_o this_o treatise_n more_o full_o show_v what_o every_o one_o of_o these_o be_v and_o what_o force_n they_o have_v god_n work_v thereby_o to_o uphold_v the_o weight_n of_o a_o godly_a life_n that_o all_o who_o list_v to_o consider_v it_o wise_o may_v see_v it_o and_o so_o many_o as_o will_v use_v these_o mean_n may_v prove_v and_o find_v it_o themselves_o and_o first_o i_o will_v begin_v with_o the_o public_a and_o afterward_o speak_v of_o the_o private_a and_o i_o will_v so_o handle_v and_o speak_v of_o every_o one_o according_a to_o the_o skill_n which_o god_n have_v give_v i_o as_o may_v make_v most_o for_o this_o present_a purpose_n that_o be_v most_o large_o of_o those_o mean_n which_o with_o their_o use_n be_v less_o know_v and_o more_o brief_o of_o those_o with_o which_o man_n be_v most_o acquaint_v neither_o let_v this_o trouble_v the_o reader_n that_o i_o have_v make_v mention_n of_o some_o of_o they_o by_o other_o occasion_n in_o some_o other_o place_n for_o whereas_o it_o may_v be_v object_v that_o these_o mean_n call_v help_n be_v speak_v of_o in_o other_o treatise_n of_o this_o book_n as_o part_n of_o a_o christian_n duty_n i_o answer_v it_o be_v true_a for_o i_o have_v speak_v of_o uprightness_n one_o piece_n of_o the_o armour_n and_o of_o watchfulness_n and_o prayer_n in_o the_o former_a treatise_n and_o so_o of_o the_o rest_n and_o there_o i_o speak_v of_o they_o as_o of_o common_a duty_n and_o part_n of_o godliness_n as_o the_o love_n and_o fear_n of_o god_n be_v but_o here_o i_o speak_v of_o they_o as_o special_a help_n to_o godliness_n for_o though_o i_o deny_v not_o but_o that_o all_o the_o duty_n of_o a_o christian_a man_n be_v also_o help_v to_o live_v happy_o yet_o who_o do_v not_o see_v that_o these_o here_o mention_v as_o the_o word_n and_o the_o sacrament_n watch_v and_o prayer_n with_o the_o other_o be_v more_o proper_o so_o call_v as_o more_o special_o fit_v we_o for_o the_o right_n perform_v of_o all_o duty_n beside_o in_o other_o place_n i_o speak_v of_o they_o by_o occasion_n and_o therefore_o more_o brief_o but_o here_o of_o purpose_n and_o therefore_o more_o large_o but_o let_v it_o suffice_v that_o i_o understand_v these_o which_o i_o mention_v in_o this_o treatise_n to_o be_v help_n and_o mean_n especial_o and_o more_o particular_o of_o the_o armour_n and_o of_o the_o part_n thereof_o this_o i_o always_o full_a of_o good_a and_o wholesome_a victual_n and_o not_o as_o one_o dish_n to_o serve_v for_o some_o occasion_n where_o we_o may_v observe_v that_o though_o the_o one_o be_v not_o without_o the_o other_o yet_o there_o be_v a_o manifest_a difference_n betwixt_o they_o so_o that_o the_o one_o be_v not_o the_o other_o and_o so_o i_o take_v it_o the_o apostle_n mean_v in_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o ephesian_n where_o when_o he_o have_v name_v diverse_a duty_n as_o mercy_n love_n kindness_n ephes_n chap._n 4._o &_o 5._o which_o be_v part_n of_o the_o armour_n yet_o he_o say_v after_o ephes_n chap._n 6.14_o stand_v fast_o in_o your_o armour_n when_o you_o have_v put_v it_o on_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o show_v kindness_n mercy_n to_o some_o person_n at_o some_o time_n and_o to_o have_v the_o use_n of_o the_o other_o part_n of_o the_o armour_n when_o occasion_n shall_v be_v offer_v but_o to_o put_v and_o keep_v they_o on_o that_o so_o we_o may_v ever_o have_v they_o in_o a_o readiness_n to_o be_v use_v even_o as_o woman_n do_v not_o only_o trim_a and_o dress_v their_o house_n with_o flower_n but_o they_o have_v also_o their_o garden_n be_v set_v and_o fill_v with_o they_o from_o whence_o they_o may_v have_v they_o always_o for_o such_o use_n this_o i_o think_v good_a to_o say_v about_o the_o matter_n in_o hand_n to_o free_v the_o reader_n from_o some_o doubt_n now_o i_o will_v proceed_v to_o the_o next_o chapter_n chap._n 2._o of_o the_o public_a help_n to_o increase_v godliness_n and_o namely_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o will_v not_o be_v warn_v till_o we_o say_v as_o many_o have_v say_v oh_o that_o we_o have_v be_v wise_a therefore_o both_o at_o such_o time_n when_o we_o enter_v by_o ourselves_o into_o the_o consideration_n of_o our_o sin_n to_o the_o end_n we_o may_v grow_v further_o out_o of_o like_n with_o it_o and_o at_o all_o other_o time_n let_v we_o endeavour_n to_o follow_v that_o which_o have_v be_v say_v concern_v this_o point_n namely_o that_o we_o deal_v wise_o in_o our_o own_o behalf_n as_o by_o the_o former_a caution_n we_o have_v be_v advise_v thus_o in_o some_o sort_n i_o have_v show_v how_o we_o shall_v look_v to_o ourselves_o when_o we_o be_v alone_o and_o how_o we_o shall_v be_v occupy_v in_o that_o time_n of_o the_o day_n wherein_o we_o be_v free_a from_o the_o work_n of_o our_o call_n and_o from_o company_n that_o be_v to_o say_v in_o keep_v ourselves_o from_o idleness_n and_o vain_a wander_n and_o if_o it_o may_v be_v in_o do_v some_o good_a at_o leastwise_o ready_a and_o prepare_v thereto_o that_o we_o may_v always_o even_o alone_o as_o in_o company_n suspect_v ourselves_o and_o pass_v our_o time_n in_o fear_n and_o be_v mindful_a of_o satan_n enterprise_n also_o such_o caveat_n or_o caution_n as_o i_o have_v think_v needful_a i_o have_v add_v whether_o we_o be_v occupy_v about_o thing_n lawful_a or_o thing_n which_o be_v holy_a in_o our_o solitariness_n or_o in_o avoid_v thing_n which_o be_v evil_a and_o if_o for_o all_o that_o which_o i_o have_v say_v of_o direct_v we_o to_o the_o well_o spend_v of_o the_o time_n alone_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o persuade_v some_o i_o think_v it_o the_o best_a way_n to_o shame_v they_o with_o the_o example_n of_o the_o heathen_a philosopher_n and_o to_o send_v they_o to_o learn_v of_o they_o who_o refuse_v to_o be_v teach_v of_o the_o scripture_n and_o among_o the_o rest_n marcus_n tullius_n cicero_n may_v be_v one_o solitariness_n who_o although_o he_o know_v not_o christ_n nor_o his_o doctrine_n yet_o he_o have_v such_o a_o continual_a love_n to_o learning_n and_o virtue_n that_o as_o his_o write_n do_v testify_v how_o he_o be_v occupy_v in_o the_o eye_n of_o other_o so_o this_o one_o of_o his_o say_n show_v how_o he_o pass_v his_o time_n alone_o i_o be_v weary_a say_v he_o of_o live_v among_o wicked_a man_n with_o who_o all_o place_n in_o a_o manner_n do_v swarm_n i_o betake_v myself_o unto_o solitariness_n as_o much_o as_o i_o can_v yet_o that_o none_o may_v think_v i_o to_o trifle_v out_o my_o time_n idle_o that_o i_o say_v no_o more_o let_v my_o book_n which_o be_v many_o volume_n speak_v how_o in_o my_o solitariness_n i_o have_v be_v occupy_v but_o let_v we_o hear_v another_o which_o be_v before_o tully_n who_o example_n be_v record_v of_o he_o and_o of_o that_o wise_a man_n cato_n express_v in_o his_o own_o word_n thus_o publius_n scipio_n african_n the_o first_o of_o that_o name_n be_v wont_a to_o say_v that_o he_o be_v never_o less_o idle_a or_o unoccupied_a then_o when_o he_o be_v free_a from_o business_n and_o that_o he_o be_v never_o less_o solitary_a then_o when_o he_o be_v alone_o which_o speech_n manifest_o declare_v that_o he_o do_v to_o do_v when_o they_o have_v not_o some_o work_n to_o set_v themselves_o about_o but_o become_v utter_o idle_a except_o their_o head_n be_v run_v after_o some_o evil_n he_o be_v both_o profitable_o exercise_v and_o the_o better_o quicken_v and_o sharpen_v by_o such_o intermission_n to_o return_v to_o public_a affair_n and_o business_n again_o therefore_o as_o have_v be_v say_v he_o by_o the_o keep_n of_o his_o mind_n occupy_v and_o by_o search_v out_o those_o thing_n which_o by_o muse_v and_o contemplation_n he_o attain_v unto_o be_v never_o either_o alone_a or_o unoccupied_a this_o be_v yet_o we_o be_v soon_o glut_v with_o they_o that_o in_o our_o solitary_a refresh_n and_o recreation_n of_o our_o mind_n we_o can_v seldom_o look_v up_o above_o that_o which_o we_o may_v see_v with_o our_o eye_n as_o though_o such_o heavenly_a matter_n have_v no_o savour_n with_o we_o but_o be_v wearisome_a and_o tedious_a this_o scipio_n when_o he_o have_v be_v much_o take_v up_o in_o civil_a affair_n and_o deal_n among_o man_n can_v with_o pleasure_n and_o delight_n think_v by_o himself_o alone_o of_o thing_n profitable_a of_o wisdom_n learning_n civil_a government_n in_o war_n and_o peace_n etc._n etc._n but_o we_o if_o we_o have_v take_v a_o little_a pain_n in_o company_n we_o give_v our_o mind_n the_o bridle_n in_o our_o intermission_n &_o solitariness_n to_o think_v of_o that_o only_a almost_o which_o they_o desire_v and_o as_o for_o serious_a matter_n we_o blush_v not_o to_o say_v we_o will_v not_o meddle_v with_o they_o but_o lay_v they_o aside_o whereas_o who_o doubt_v but_o that_o the_o end_n of_o all_o our_o knowledge_n be_v use_n and_o practice_v to_o keep_v our_o heart_n in_o a_o heavenly_a manner_n subject_a to_o our_o god_n from_o time_n to_o time_n we_o have_v far_o great_a need_n of_o meditation_n and_o keep_n of_o our_o mind_n in_o frame_n than_o this_o scipio_n or_o such_o like_a in_o their_o kind_n how_o rare_a be_v those_o man_n and_o yet_o ridiculous_a for_o their_o labour_n who_o acquaint_v themselves_o with_o this_o meditate_v of_o the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o infinite_a variety_n of_o holy_a thing_n therein_o
other_o and_o do_v not_o believe_v nor_o regard_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o scripture_n which_o teach_v the_o truth_n more_o sound_o than_o it_o can_v be_v see_v in_o the_o holy_a person_n and_o perfect_a pattern_n therefore_o they_o grow_v to_o these_o absurdity_n and_o yet_o when_o their_o infirmity_n appear_v and_o affliction_n take_v hold_v of_o they_o god_n see_v it_o expedient_a that_o it_o be_v so_o for_o a_o season_n 1.6_o even_o than_o be_v their_o estate_n more_o to_o be_v desire_v than_o the_o other_o in_o their_o great_a flourish_v for_o they_o be_v belove_v of_o the_o lord_n fall_v yet_o still_o for_o all_o that_o and_o most_o dear_a unto_o he_o as_o it_o be_v write_v i_o be_o black_a you_o daughter_n of_o jerusalem_n yet_o comely_a etc._n etc._n and_o of_o their_o fall_n and_o infirmity_n i_o say_v that_o therefore_o they_o depart_v from_o the_o good_a and_o perfect_a way_n for_o a_o moment_n that_o they_o may_v thereby_o see_v and_o bewail_v their_o vileness_n and_o intemperancy_n of_o heart_n etc._n etc._n to_o the_o offence_n of_o many_o that_o they_o do_v exceed_o abate_v the_o beauty_n &_o glory_n of_o their_o profession_n and_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v confess_v and_o grant_v that_o few_o christian_n be_v as_o they_o may_v and_o ought_v to_o be_v but_o goodness_n be_v too_o spare_v and_o grace_n be_v too_o sore_o dim_v and_o darken_v in_o most_o even_o of_o the_o best_a and_o forward_a and_o few_o carry_v themselves_o as_o they_o may_v and_o ought_v to_o do_v in_o their_o course_n by_o give_v good_a example_n and_o this_o make_v the_o gospel_n to_o be_v less_o honour_v and_o embrace_v of_o many_o be_v whereas_o if_o it_o be_v a_o more_o common_a thing_n that_o the_o well-willer_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v more_o faithful_a wise_a watchful_a love_a harmless_a fruitful_a etc._n etc._n it_o will_v cut_v and_o wound_v the_o heart_n and_o conscience_n of_o the_o bad_a and_o also_o encourage_v many_o of_o the_o weak_a sort_n unto_o their_o duty_n but_o yet_o shall_v the_o life_n of_o they_o be_v glorious_a before_o god_n and_o shine_a light_n to_o such_o as_o can_v see_v and_o discern_v while_o they_o that_o carp_n at_o they_o and_o seek_v to_o disgrace_v they_o shall_v be_v as_o the_o mist_n and_o cloud_n that_o shine_v not_o but_o hinder_v the_o light_n rather_o and_o whereas_o it_o may_v be_v say_v that_o some_o of_o they_o have_v excellent_a gift_n of_o god_n in_o they_o yet_o the_o truth_n be_v where_o sanctification_n even_o the_o salt_n of_o grace_n be_v not_o to_o season_v they_o they_o be_v but_o as_o a_o pleasant_a and_o beautiful_a flower_n grow_v on_o a_o dunghill_n and_o as_o solomon_n say_v like_o a_o ring_n in_o a_o swine_n snout_n and_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o privilege_n of_o the_o true_a believer_n the_o end_n of_o the_o six_o treatise_n the_o seven_o treatise_n of_o the_o objection_n and_o cavil_n which_o may_v be_v bring_v against_o the_o doctrine_n before_o set_v down_o and_o a_o answer_n to_o they_o chap._n 1._o of_o the_o sum_n and_o order_n of_o this_o treatise_n now_o that_o i_o have_v set_v down_o the_o sum_n of_o the_o matter_n which_o i_o take_v in_o hand_n and_o have_v show_v how_o it_o behove_v the_o people_n of_o god_n to_o be_v direct_v and_o guide_v daily_o unto_o the_o christian_a life_n and_o what_o impediment_n be_v in_o the_o way_n to_o hinder_v from_o it_o and_o privilege_n to_o encourage_v to_o it_o i_o will_v now_o in_o the_o next_o and_o last_o place_n as_o i_o appoint_v in_o the_o entrance_n meet_v with_o the_o objection_n and_o cavil_n which_o may_v arise_v from_o thence_o that_o all_o the_o lord_n inheritance_n may_v walk_v after_o that_o course_n more_o resolute_o and_o bold_o especial_o when_o such_o objection_n as_o may_v trouble_v they_o shall_v appear_v to_o be_v but_o weak_a and_o vain_a as_o i_o nothing_o doubt_v but_o whatsoever_o show_v of_o reason_n may_v come_v in_o the_o way_n against_o it_o shall_v be_v see_v to_o be_v but_o the_o froth_n of_o man_n brain_n and_o carnal_a and_o i_o likewise_o hope_v that_o such_o as_o shall_v be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o doctrine_n before_o set_v down_o shall_v not_o only_o be_v encourage_v by_o these_o answer_n to_o practice_v it_o but_o also_o enable_v and_o persuade_v to_o continue_v therein_o till_o more_o light_n be_v give_v they_o for_o the_o well_o govern_v of_o themselves_o and_o that_o in_o a_o more_o perfect_a manner_n than_o i_o can_v set_v down_o in_o the_o mean_a season_n that_o this_o which_o i_o here_o have_v propound_v may_v help_v to_o direct_v the_o common_a sort_n of_o christian_a people_n as_o the_o godly_a learned_a have_v be_v teach_v of_o god_n to_o direct_v themselves_o for_o who_o know_v not_o this_o that_o even_o many_o of_o god_n dear_a child_n do_v and_o have_v through_o ignorance_n and_o for_o want_n of_o direction_n very_o dim_o see_v into_o the_o beauty_n of_o a_o godly_a life_n and_o uncomfortable_o go_v about_o it_o and_o have_v make_v a_o mere_a toil_n of_o the_o service_n of_o god_n which_o shall_v be_v the_o great_a pleasure_n therefore_o as_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v doubt_v but_o that_o number_n will_v rebel_v against_o the_o doctrine_n which_o range_v they_o within_o holy_a compass_n and_o will_v refuse_v to_o be_v subject_a to_o it_o and_o that_o they_o which_o do_v so_o will_v frame_v their_o judgement_n to_o their_o practice_n to_o excuse_v and_o defend_v that_o to_o be_v good_a which_o they_o do_v and_o beside_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o that_o question_n will_v arise_v in_o the_o weak_a believer_n about_o it_o to_o trouble_v they_o i_o will_v therefore_o as_o i_o say_v in_o this_o treatise_n set_v myself_o against_o such_o carnal_a reason_n answer_v the_o cavil_n and_o quarrel_n which_o they_o shall_v raise_v and_o bring_v for_o the_o defence_n of_o their_o evil_a life_n against_o the_o former_a doctrine_n and_o then_o remove_v the_o objection_n which_o weak_a but_o yet_o teachable_a christian_n will_v or_o ought_v to_o propound_v for_o their_o satisfy_n before_o i_o end_v treatise_n and_o i_o will_v do_v it_o in_o this_o manner_n first_o to_o answer_v they_o who_o object_n that_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o any_o daily_a direct_n of_o we_o as_o long_o as_o we_o have_v the_o scripture_n and_o therefore_o neither_o this_o which_o be_v before_o set_v down_o by_o i_o nor_o any_o other_o be_v of_o any_o use_n or_o to_o any_o purpose_n this_o i_o will_v answer_v in_o the_o next_o chapter_n then_o i_o will_v show_v the_o objection_n and_o cavil_n of_o they_o who_o say_v that_o neither_o this_o nor_o any_o other_o like_o it_o can_v be_v observe_v that_o be_v daily_o and_o set_v down_o their_o reason_n and_o show_v what_o great_a inconvenience_n they_o think_v will_v follow_v and_o to_o these_o i_o will_v answer_v in_o the_o three_o next_o chapter_n after_o both_o i_o will_v mention_v sundry_a of_o the_o particular_a doubt_n which_o be_v like_a to_o rise_v in_o the_o mind_n of_o such_o as_o be_v teachable_a and_o well_o dispose_v christian_n and_o arm_v they_o against_o the_o same_o to_o the_o ten_o chapter_n and_o last_o of_o all_o i_o will_v shut_v up_o this_o treatise_n and_o the_o whole_a book_n exhort_v all_o the_o faithful_a to_o make_v use_n of_o it_o and_o the_o unreformed_a to_o repentance_n chap._n 2._o of_o the_o first_o objection_n that_o their_o need_n no_o direction_n daily_o beside_o god_n word_n and_o therefore_o this_o be_v needless_a and_o first_o if_o any_o do_v marvel_n why_o i_o write_v any_o direction_n at_o all_o as_o though_o god_n have_v not_o set_v down_o in_o the_o scripture_n a_o way_n for_o we_o all_o to_o walk_v in_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o if_o that_o be_v a_o good_a reason_n why_o no_o help_n for_o man_n weakness_n shall_v be_v set_v forth_o in_o writing_n because_o it_o be_v the_o same_o which_o be_v in_o the_o scripture_n than_o it_o shall_v follow_v with_o as_o great_a reason_n that_o nothing_o shall_v be_v preach_v because_o all_o that_o which_o be_v preach_v if_o we_o preach_v in_o the_o name_n and_o by_o the_o authority_n of_o god_n be_v out_o of_o the_o scripture_n but_o see_v there_o can_v be_v no_o doubt_n make_v of_o that_o &_o therefore_o that_o both_o preach_v &_o write_v be_v singular_a gift_n of_o god_n for_o the_o build_n up_o of_o his_o church_n &_o that_o all_o help_n be_v not_o
