part_n which_o in_o precept_n and_o prohibition_n be_v a_o rule_n of_o obedience_n for_o as_o the_o law_n consider_v as_o a_o rule_n of_o judgement_n presuppose_v something_o before_o in_o it_o as_o a_o rule_n of_o obedience_n so_o these_o promise_n relate_v unto_o the_o precept_n observe_v as_o the_o threat_n consider_v they_o as_o violate_v this_o be_v the_o order_n determine_v by_o god_n to_o manifest_v his_o justice_n in_o his_o retribution_n of_o reward_n and_o punishment_n and_o hereby_o he_o signify_v that_o though_o he_o be_v much_o incline_v to_o reward_n and_o do_v good_a yet_o he_o will_v judge_v only_o the_o obedient_a a_o fit_a subject_n of_o his_o bounty_n and_o reward_n they_o that_o be_v just_a and_o obey_v his_o law_n and_o they_o only_o shall_v live_v and_o enjoy_v his_o mercy_n and_o he_o never_o threaten_v as_o he_o never_o inflict_v punishment_n but_o upon_o demerit_n of_o the_o disobedient_a for_o he_o never_o punish_v any_o but_o such_o as_o violate_v just_a law_n neither_o do_v ever_o intend_v it_o or_o signify_v his_o intention_n otherwise_o the_o particular_a and_o distinct_a nature_n of_o these_o promise_n §_o iii_o and_o threat_n be_v the_o three_o thing_n to_o be_v consider_v they_o agree_v with_o the_o promise_n and_o commination_n of_o the_o law_n of_o work_n in_o creation_n with_o the_o law_n also_o give_v to_o israel_n from_o god_n by_o moses_n both_o in_o that_o they_o be_v promise_n and_o threat_n of_o god_n and_o also_o because_o they_o be_v annex_v to_o the_o precept_n as_o a_o rule_n of_o obedience_n these_o likewise_o as_o well_o as_o those_o may_v be_v call_v sanction_n as_o add_v to_o the_o precept_n for_o to_o enforce_v the_o obedience_n for_o the_o promise_n be_v mighty_a motive_n and_o powerful_o persuade_v to_o the_o observation_n as_o threaten_n restrain_v from_o the_o violation_n of_o the_o precept_n and_o both_o these_o be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o effectual_a because_o there_o be_v â—n_o inward_a principle_n in_o man_n whereby_o he_o natural_o desire_v his_o own_o preservation_n â—nd_v happiness_n and_o abhor_v to_o think_v of_o his_o own_o destruction_n or_o misery_n but_o these_o be_v distinguish_v from_o other_o promise_n and_o threat_v even_o of_o god_n 1._o because_o the_o author_n of_o they_o be_v god-redeemer_n as_o redeemer_n 2._o the_o thing_n promise_v be_v merit_v by_o christ_n and_o so_o promise_v and_o give_v and_o to_o be_v expect_v of_o freegrace_n 3._o the_o term_n upon_o which_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v be_v faith_n in_o christ_n and_o sincere_a obedience_n to_o god_n redeemer_n 4._o the_o party_n who_o must_v receive_v the_o mercy_n promise_v be_v in_o themselves_o 1._o unjust_a and_o unworthy_a 2._o derive_v their_o power_n to_o perform_v the_o condition_n and_o precept_n of_o the_o law_n from_o the_o redeemer_n upon_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n have_v satisfy_v god_n justice_n whereas_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o law_n of_o work_n presuppose_a man_n to_o have_v power_n to_o keep_v it_o give_v in_o creation_n and_o require_v perfect_a and_o perpetual_a obedience_n by_o that_o power_n and_o if_o man_n once_o lose_v that_o power_n there_o be_v no_o promise_n in_o that_o law_n of_o restore_v it_o again_o or_o give_v new_a power_n it_o be_v say_v do_v this_o and_o live_v sin_n in_o the_o least_o and_o die_v and_o so_o it_o bind_v to_o perfect_a and_o perpetual_a performance_n or_o unto_o death_n as_o unavoidable_a by_o that_o law_n for_o there_o be_v no_o promise_n of_o pardon_n the_o law_n of_o moses_n do_v strict_o command_v universal_a and_o constant_a obedience_n for_o curse_a be_v he_o that_o continue_v not_o say_v the_o law_n in_o all_o thing_n write_v in_o that_o book_n it_o promise_v no_o spiritual_a blessing_n no_o the_o apprehension_n and_o sense_n of_o one_o sin_n yet_o afterward_o he_o begin_v to_o see_v his_o sin_n to_o be_v many_o and_o heinous_a and_o so_o his_o condition_n to_o be_v very_o miserable_a past_a but_o for_o power_n against_o sin_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v and_o though_o man_n desire_n and_o endeavour_n to_o repent_v and_o believe_v and_o quiet_a his_o mind_n in_o christ_n merit_n and_o god_n promise_n yet_o he_o can_v do_v these_o thing_n to_o purpose_n nor_o any_o man_n in_o the_o world_n can_v give_v he_o effectual_a comfort_n by_o the_o application_n of_o the_o promise_n till_o god_n put_v his_o law_n in_o his_o mind_n and_o write_v they_o in_o his_o heart_n by_o his_o divine_a spirit_n thus_o to_o do_v be_v a_o work_n of_o the_o divine_a spirit_n who_o alone_o can_v write_v immediate_o and_o imprint_v the_o divine_a precept_n and_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n upon_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n and_o so_o give_v he_o a_o divine_a power_n to_o repent_v to_o believe_v to_o understand_v to_o do_v the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o apply_v his_o promise_n the_o word_n now_o be_v no_o long_o only_o in_o book_n or_o in_o man_n mouth_n or_o in_o their_o ear_n but_o also_o in_o the_o heart_n yet_o it_o be_v here_o to_o be_v note_v 1._o that_o this_o great_a promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v not_o absolute_a as_o though_o god_n pre-required_n no_o duty_n to_o be_v perform_v by_o man_n 2._o that_o he_o do_v not_o this_o work_n without_o the_o word_n both_o teach_v hear_v and_o learned_a 3._o that_o this_o law_n be_v not_o full_o and_o perfect_o write_v in_o any_o man_n heart_n in_o this_o life_n 4._o that_o therefore_o the_o most_o illuminate_v and_o sanctify_a man_n in_o this_o life_n have_v need_n of_o the_o write_a word_n this_o be_v not_o any_o
