first_o their_o patience_n than_o their_o impatience_n the_o latter_a he_o handle_v first_o as_o be_v the_o manner_n of_o the_o scripture_n namely_o that_o they_o can_v not_o forbear_v those_o that_o feign_v themselves_o to_o be_v apostle_n and_o yet_o be_v not_o and_o therefore_o they_o prove_v they_o and_o try_v and_o find_v they_o to_o be_v liar_n second_o their_o patience_n that_o they_o have_v bear_v much_o affliction_n and_o many_o trouble_n for_o the_o truth_n sake_n and_o do_v still_o bear_v in_o the_o maintenance_n thereof_o and_o be_v not_o weary_a which_o be_v require_v in_o true_a patience_n and_o have_v commend_v the_o good_a in_o they_o he_o come_v to_o the_o reproof_n where_o he_o teach_v those_o that_o be_v to_o reprehend_v other_o that_o they_o set_v down_o in_o the_o first_o place_n the_o thing_n that_o be_v praiseworthy_a in_o the_o party_n to_o be_v reprehend_v and_o then_o to_o set_v down_o the_o reproof_n which_o condemn_v those_o which_o use_v to_o rell_v the_o fault_n leave_v out_o the_o remembrance_n of_o the_o good_a but_o the_o holy_a ghost_n here_o contrariwise_o do_v nominate_v and_o commend_v their_o virtue_n that_o the_o better_a they_o may_v be_v be_v the_o reproof_n of_o their_o vice_n verse_n 4._o the_o reproof_n be_v that_o he_o say_v they_o have_v fall_v from_o their_o first_o love_n where_o he_o reprehend_v their_o want_n of_o zeal_n show_v that_o the_o fervency_n of_o their_o love_n which_o first_o they_o have_v be_v now_o decay_v and_o cool_v therefore_o he_o exhort_v they_o to_o a_o change_n first_o in_o their_o judgement_n that_o they_o shall_v reform_v it_o which_o appear_v in_o that_o he_o say_v verse_n 5._o remember_v then_o in_o their_o will_n and_o affection_n in_o that_o he_o bid_v they_o repent_v last_o in_o their_o action_n in_o that_o he_o command_v they_o to_o do_v their_o first_o work_n so_o that_o he_o require_v of_o they_o a_o good_a and_o full_a reformation_n of_o all_o thing_n that_o be_v amiss_o both_o inward_o and_o outward_o and_o he_o show_v further_o if_o they_o will_v not_o be_v reform_v according_a as_o he_o exhort_v they_o that_o he_o will_v remove_v their_o candlestick_n that_o be_v either_o cast_v they_o into_o banishment_n and_o suffer_v they_o to_o be_v lead_v into_o captivity_n or_o remove_v his_o gospel_n from_o they_o and_o lest_o they_o shall_v be_v too_o much_o discourage_v and_o cast_v down_o by_o this_o severe_a and_o sharp_a reprehension_n he_o do_v after_o mollify_v the_o reproof_n by_o praise_v they_o again_o verse_n 6._o and_o he_o say_v that_o they_o have_v this_o good_a thing_n that_o they_o hate_v the_o sin_n of_o the_o nicolaitan_n which_o he_o also_o hate_v to_o wit_n both_o spiritual_a and_o corporal_a fornication_n and_o last_o he_o gospel_n and_o will_v mingle_v the_o ceremony_n of_o the_o law_n with_o the_o gospel_n verse_n 10._o and_o because_o they_o be_v afraid_a of_o future_a evil_n he_o foretelleth_a they_o of_o such_o trouble_n which_o shall_v befall_v they_o that_o they_o may_v be_v the_o better_o prepare_v against_o they_o and_o the_o more_o comfort_v in_o they_o and_o he_o tell_v they_o that_o some_o of_o they_o shall_v be_v cast_v into_o prison_n and_o that_o they_o shall_v have_v tribulation_n that_o be_v grievous_a affliction_n and_o persecution_n ten_o day_n that_o be_v ten_o year_n every_o day_n be_v count_v for_o a_o year_n according_a as_o that_o phrase_n be_v use_v and_o expound_v in_o daniel_n as_o afterward_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v from_o half_a the_o reign_n of_o traian_n to_o the_o time_n of_o adrian_n for_o which_o space_n the_o church_n suffer_v extreme_a persecution_n and_o howsoever_o their_o persecutor_n may_v seem_v to_o do_v it_o in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n yet_o he_o show_v they_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v the_o only_a hand_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o through_o his_o malice_n &_o therefore_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v discourage_v but_o shall_v rather_o be_v comfort_v for_o all_o time_n and_o as_o sergeant_n attend_v on_o their_o judge_n so_o be_v they_o be_v always_o ready_a to_o receive_v any_o commandment_n he_o enjoin_v they_o so_o also_o our_o saviour_n christ_n in_o john_n be_v say_v to_o wait_v still_o on_o the_o will_n of_o his_o father_n namely_o as_o he_o be_v mediator_n in_o that_o these_o be_v say_v to_o be_v four_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v think_v that_o there_o be_v no_o more_o in_o number_n but_o he_o understand_v by_o four_o a_o competent_a and_o sufficient_a number_n able_a to_o execute_v any_o thing_n which_o god_n will_v have_v fulfil_v in_o all_o the_o world_n in_o the_o east_n west_n south_n and_o north._n these_o beast_n be_v also_o describe_v to_o be_v full_a of_o eye_n signify_v their_o providence_n and_o singular_a direction_n they_o go_v withal_o then_o they_o be_v several_o describe_v the_o first_o of_o they_o be_v like_o a_o lion_n declare_v their_o courage_n the_o second_o like_o a_o ox_n signify_v their_o strength_n the_o three_o like_o a_o man_n note_v their_o wisdom_n the_o four_o like_o a_o eagle_n show_v their_o swiftness_n and_o speediness_n in_o do_v god_n will_n their_o six_o wing_n express_v their_o readiness_n to_o go_v to_o all_o place_n their_o wing_n full_a of_o eye_n show_v that_o they_o go_v not_o at_o all_o adventure_n these_o be_v about_o the_o throne_n under_o it_o be_v a_o sea_n of_o crystal_n whereby_o seem_v to_o be_v mean_v the_o earthly_a creature_n and_o all_o thing_n in_o this_o present_a world_n compare_v to_o a_o sea_n because_o of_o the_o unconstancy_n of_o they_o liken_v to_o crystal_n because_o god_n see_v clear_o into_o they_o and_o through_o they_o for_o as_o one_o may_v see_v easy_o into_o glass_n and_o crystal_n so_o these_o be_v evident_o see_v and_o discern_v of_o god_n as_o be_v continual_o in_o his_o sight_n and_o presence_n have_v be_v make_v by_o he_o and_o be_v govern_v by_o he_o after_o the_o four_o beast_n be_v say_v to_o fall_v down_o and_o praise_v he_o day_n and_o night_n for_o all_o his_o power_n glory_n and_o majesty_n and_o especial_o as_o it_o seem_v for_o those_o thunder_n that_o be_v for_o those_o judgement_n to_o be_v execute_v on_o the_o world_n acknowledge_v that_o they_o be_v just_a and_o right_o and_o albeit_o they_o be_v seal_v up_o as_o appear_v in_o the_o next_o chapter_n yet_o by_o these_o thunderclap_n of_o god_n anger_n they_o can_v understand_v that_o there_o be_v judgement_n to_o come_v the_o like_a be_v in_o esay_n the_o six_o chapter_n where_o the_o angel_n also_o glorify_v god_n for_o his_o judgement_n and_o albeit_o it_o may_v seem_v to_o man_n to_o be_v a_o very_a hard_a and_o grievous_a thing_n that_o god_n shall_v harden_v the_o heart_n of_o the_o people_n to_o the_o end_n he_o may_v more_o full_o express_v his_o judgement_n on_o they_o yet_o nevertheless_o the_o angel_n cease_v not_o to_o magnify_v he_o for_o the_o same_o and_o so_o they_o do_v here_o in_o this_o place_n and_o not_o only_o they_o but_o the_o elder_n &_o the_o church_n and_o child_n of_o god_n do_v also_o join_v with_o the_o angel_n to_o praise_v the_o lord_n as_o for_o all_o other_o his_o work_n in_o his_o creature_n so_o also_o for_o his_o judgement_n &_o they_o do_v pronounce_v that_o god_n be_v worthy_a to_o have_v glory_n in_o his_o judgement_n as_o unto_o who_o alone_o all_o fullness_n of_o government_n of_o the_o world_n by_o god_n the_o father_n consider_v by_o himself_o alone_o then_o between_o christ_n and_o the_o world_n as_o he_o be_v join_v with_o the_o office_n of_o mediation_n which_o concern_v the_o church_n and_o again_o there_o be_v a_o more_o simple_a and_o immediate_a government_n of_o christ_n in_o his_o church_n then_o of_o the_o father_n another_o difference_n be_v this_o in_o that_o it_o be_v say_v this_o book_n be_v open_a the_o other_o be_v shut_v which_o show_v we_o that_o through_o christ_n only_o these_o thing_n be_v make_v manifest_a unto_o we_o for_o without_o his_o mediation_n all_o thing_n in_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v hide_v and_o shut_v up_o from_o we_o that_o we_o can_v know_v they_o for_o as_o the_o deity_n of_o god_n be_v consider_v in_o the_o three_o person_n we_o can_v have_v no_o participation_n of_o any_o good_a thing_n from_o the_o same_o but_o as_o christ_n be_v the_o mediator_n between_o god_n and_o we_o all_o thing_n which_o concern_v we_o be_v open_v unto_o we_o yea_o the_o knowledge_n of_o all_o thing_n we_o be_v to_o know_v and_o therefore_o if_o he_o come_v between_o we_o and_o god_n than_o the_o thing_n of_o our_o god_n shall_v be_v open_v and_o reveal_v unto_o us._n his_o foot_n like_o two_o pillar_n of_o fire_n this_o be_v to_o show_v his_o strength_n and_o power_n the_o pillar_n declare_v his_o steadiness_n fire_n signify_v pierce_v and_o therefore_o where_o his_o power_n set_v there_o it_o cleave_v hard_a whereby_o be_v set_v down_o the_o incomparable_a virtue_n and_o power_n of_o christ_n and_o whereas_o one_o foot_n be_v set_v on_o the_o sea_n and_o the_o other_o on_o the_o land_n it_o set_v forth_o unto_o we_o his_o full_a authority_n over_o all_o and_o that_o he_o be_v in_o all_o place_n in_o regard_n of_o his_o godhead_n this_o do_v not_o prove_v the_o be_v of_o christ_n natural_a body_n in_o many_o place_n at_o once_o for_o he_o do_v not_o set_v his_o foot_n of_o his_o natural_a body_n at_o this_o time_n on_o the_o land_n and_o sea_n neither_o can_v it_o be_v in_o diverse_a place_n for_o than_o it_o leese_v the_o nature_n of_o a_o body_n the_o right_a foot_n on_o the_o sea_n this_o be_v say_v after_o the_o use_n of_o the_o scripture_n by_o his_o right_a foot_n mean_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o his_o strength_n that_o see_v the_o sea_n be_v a_o most_o unruly_a and_o rage_a creature_n he_o set_v his_o right_a foot_n upon_o it_o note_v unto_o we_o that_o christ_n as_o he_o rule_v all_o so_o even_o those_o thing_n more_o especial_o which_o be_v most_o unruly_a and_o that_o which_o need_v most_o power_n he_o use_v most_o to_o the_o subdue_a and_o govern_v of_o it_o this_o be_v to_o teach_v we_o not_o to_o fear_v at_o the_o great_a rage_n of_o the_o trouble_n that_o be_v in_o the_o world_n but_o to_o know_v according_a as_o they_o be_v more_o grievous_a and_o as_o they_o do_v increase_v so_o the_o lord_n will_v add_v more_o help_n and_o increase_v his_o strength_n the_o more_o to_o the_o asswage_n of_o they_o and_o when_o the_o earth_n begin_v to_o turmoil_v then_o will_v he_o set_v his_o left_a foot_n on_o it_o and_o when_o the_o sea_n begin_v to_o rage_n then_o will_v he_o set_v his_o right_a foot_n upon_o it_o and_o as_o in_o general_a so_o in_o particular_a trouble_n we_o be_v to_o receive_v notable_a comfort_n for_o if_o more_o grievous_a sorrow_n and_o affliction_n do_v assail_v we_o yet_o the_o lord_n have_v his_o right_a foot_n on_o they_o all_o shall_v be_v quiet_a and_o still_o with_o we_o again_o after_o he_o be_v describe_v by_o his_o voice_n whereby_o he_o declare_v his_o terriblenesse_n that_o howsoever_o otherwise_o he_o be_v describe_v to_o be_v like_o a_o man_n yet_o because_o man_n voice_n be_v too_o weak_a to_o express_v the_o force_n of_o it_o he_o compare_v it_o to_o the_o voice_n of_o a_o lion_n to_o strike_v the_o more_o terror_n and_o fear_n into_o our_o heart_n according_a as_o it_o be_v say_v if_o the_o lion_n roar_v shall_v not_o the_o beast_n of_o the_o field_n tremble_v how_o much_o more_o when_o christ_n speak_v and_o thunder_v out_o his_o judgement_n shall_v not_o we_o which_o be_v silly_a lamb_n nay_o not_o so_o much_o in_o respect_n of_o christ_n as_o lamb_n to_o the_o lion_n be_v afraid_a and_o if_o our_o saviour_n christ_n show_v forth_o the_o token_n of_o his_o wrath_n against_o sinner_n by_o denounce_v and_o threaten_a judgement_n against_o they_o shall_v not_o we_o tremble_v and_o be_v terrify_v for_o our_o sin_n after_o that_o he_o have_v thus_o extend_v his_o voice_n s._n john_n say_v he_o hear_v the_o voice_n of_o seven_o thunder_n and_o those_o not_o such_o as_o be_v confuse_v but_o there_o be_v a_o discerneable_a and_o plain_a speech_n in_o the_o voice_n of_o the_o thunder_n now_o saint_n john_n as_o he_o be_v before_o command_v be_v ready_a to_o write_v the_o thing_n which_o be_v speak_v by_o the_o thunder_n be_v notwithstanding_o bid_v to_o seal_v they_o up_o that_o be_v to_o keep_v they_o close_o as_o be_v matter_n of_o secrecy_n for_o god_n of_o his_o good_a will_n be_v content_a to_o show_v they_o and_o make_v they_o know_v to_o he_o for_o his_o particular_a comfort_n which_o he_o will_v not_o have_v be_v reveal_v unto_o other_o herein_o we_o see_v how_o god_n dispose_v of_o his_o word_n viz._n some_o he_o reveal_v unto_o his_o servant_n some_o he_o keep_v hide_v in_o his_o own_o everlasting_a counsel_n to_o teach_v we_o that_o see_v god_n have_v keep_v many_o thing_n of_o his_o to_o himself_o which_o he_o have_v not_o reveal_v unto_o we_o that_o therefore_o we_o shall_v not_o despair_v in_o our_o trouble_n but_o see_v he_o have_v reserve_v secret_a to_o his_o own_o counsel_n even_o many_o thing_n which_o concern_v the_o special_a good_a of_o his_o church_n and_o the_o singular_a comfort_n of_o his_o child_n we_o be_v therefore_o rather_o to_o be_v stir_v up_o by_o prayer_n to_o come_v unto_o he_o to_o entreat_v he_o that_o he_o will_v govern_v all_o thing_n to_o the_o good_a of_o his_o church_n again_o that_o be_v here_o further_o to_o be_v consider_v which_o john_n speak_v elsewhere_o that_o we_o be_v not_o able_a by_o reason_n of_o our_o carelessness_n and_o dulness_n of_o understanding_n to_o attain_v in_o any_o measure_n to_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o the_o meaning_n of_o this_o book_n how_o much_o less_o if_o great_a matter_n have_v be_v write_v down_o nay_o rather_o we_o will_v have_v be_v quite_o drive_v back_o from_o it_o and_o therefore_o this_o be_v to_o teach_v we_o to_o be_v diligent_a in_o
