one_o and_o beside_o we_o see_v that_o learned_a man_n i_o speak_v of_o many_o who_o may_v for_o their_o excellent_a gift_n profit_v many_o and_o do_v the_o church_n much_o good_a be_v hara_o draw_v thereto_o i_o leave_v their_o reason_n to_o themselves_o perhaps_o they_o think_v it_o a_o needless_a work_n to_o set_v forth_o more_o book_n for_o i_o own_o part_n i_o know_v that_o many_o will_v read_v little_a if_o there_o be_v not_o new_a book_n set_v forth_o i_o think_v it_o to_o good_a purpose_n to_o labour_v in_o that_o kind_n especial_o when_o the_o thing_n set_v forth_o be_v for_o the_o quicken_a up_o of_o the_o present_a drowsy_a age_n and_o so_o i_o testify_v my_o judgement_n by_o my_o write_n that_o i_o be_o of_o another_o mind_n not_o for_o that_o i_o will_v dissent_v from_o learned_a man_n or_o seek_v glory_n and_o praise_n by_o this_o my_o practice_n when_o to_o speak_v as_o the_o truth_n be_v i_o confess_v free_o that_o attempt_n as_o i_o come_v many_o degree_n behind_o they_o in_o gift_n for_o that_o purpose_n so_o i_o will_v not_o take_v upon_o i_o this_o exercise_n of_o writing_n unless_o i_o be_v lead_v to_o it_o by_o weighty_a reason_n but_o in_o the_o simplicity_n of_o my_o heart_n i_o speak_v it_o that_o i_o set_v myself_o to_o this_o work_n as_o i_o can_v have_v time_n and_o leisure_n from_o my_o public_a employment_n in_o my_o ministry_n and_o other_o private_a duty_n even_o to_o keep_v myself_o from_o danger_n in_o this_o evil_a world_n as_o idleness_n too_o much_o tamper_n in_o the_o world_n and_o such_o like_a needless_a and_o hurtful_a besinesse_n as_o well_o as_o for_o the_o desire_n i_o have_v to_o benefit_v any_o other_o hereby_o and_o beside_o i_o think_v it_o better_a to_o benefit_v the_o church_n while_o we_o live_v be_v but_o a_o short_a time_n other_o may_v rise_v up_o after_o to_o perfect_v such_o beginning_n then_o to_o bury_v our_o gift_n utter_o and_o so_o to_o deprive_v it_o altogether_o of_o the_o same_o by_o death_n also_o i_o see_v that_o every_o age_n of_o man_n have_v sundry_a trouble_n annex_v to_o it_o the_o old_a as_o well_o as_o the_o young_a and_o occasion_n be_v offer_v of_o sin_v and_o offend_v god_n many_o way_n by_o one_o occasion_n or_o other_o which_o be_v not_o think_v of_o before_o they_o come_v in_o so_o much_o as_o when_o the_o danger_n of_o youth_n and_o of_o the_o former_a year_n of_o our_o life_n be_v pass_v with_o inwara_n peace_n and_o without_o any_o gross_a and_o just_a offence_n to_o other_o which_o yet_o to_o do_v be_v few_o man_n case_n and_o rare_o obtain_v and_o not_o without_o much_o strive_n and_o watch_v to_o enter_v in_o at_o the_o straight_a gate_n yet_o the_o devil_n so_o much_o the_o more_o envy_v our_o credit_n in_o the_o church_n and_o the_o comfort_n we_o have_v from_o god_n in_o such_o a_o estate_n especial_o the_o minister_n and_o therefore_o he_o do_v the_o more_o bend_v his_o force_n against_o such_o that_o he_o may_v in_o their_o latter_a end_n disgrace_v they_o by_o wind_v they_o into_o some_o reproachful_a and_o foul_a offence_n that_o so_o he_o may_v as_o much_o as_o in_o he_o lie_v make_v their_o former_a virtue_n and_o part_n of_o life_n to_o be_v ridiculous_a and_o of_o no_o account_n and_o therefore_o as_o i_o be_o not_o ashamed_a to_o confess_v that_o i_o have_v receive_v wonderful_a cause_n of_o thanksgiving_n to_o god_n for_o his_o so_o great_a bounty_n and_o favour_n towards_o i_o the_o most_o unworthy_a in_o my_o young_a year_n to_o keep_v i_o from_o the_o infection_n of_o the_o time_n and_o sin_n of_o the_o age_n wherein_o i_o have_v live_v yet_o god_n be_v merciful_a to_o my_o many_o slip_n and_o infirmity_n so_o i_o be_o not_o i_o say_v ashamed_a to_o confess_v that_o i_o fear_v in_o this_o my_o decline_a age_n haste_v apace_o to_o the_o grave_n as_o with_o grief_n of_o heart_n i_o have_v see_v in_o many_o that_o i_o may_v possible_o yea_o and_o that_o full_a easy_o be_v draw_v to_o a_o unprofitable_a earthly_a idle_a and_o dead_a course_n of_o life_n and_o thereby_o to_o great_a offend_v of_o god_n and_o blemish_v of_o my_o profession_n and_o ministry_n unless_o i_o shall_v labour_v to_o prevent_v it_o by_o some_o set_a labour_n and_o study_v and_o so_o to_o hold_v fast_o that_o which_o i_o have_v receive_v of_o the_o lord_n and_o that_o be_v by_o the_o occupy_v and_o use_v the_o gift_n which_o he_o have_v give_v i_o as_o in_o this_o kind_n of_o study_n namely_o of_o writing_n i_o may_v and_o also_o if_o i_o shall_v not_o endeavour_n to_o grow_v forward_o in_o grace_n experience_n 17._o and_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n from_o the_o which_o a_o man_n may_v be_v easy_o hinder_v by_o the_o error_n of_o the_o wicked_a rather_o than_o to_o people_n who_o be_v not_o bring_v up_o in_o learning_n who_o may_v see_v that_o their_o whole_a life_n may_v be_v direct_v hereby_o and_o may_v much_o profit_n by_o it_o so_o i_o intend_v also_o in_o it_o to_o benefit_n student_n and_o preacher_n who_o be_v not_o yet_o experience_v nor_o best_o furnish_v with_o matter_n for_o the_o edify_n of_o the_o hearer_n so_o that_o beside_o the_o fruit_n they_o may_v reap_v hereby_o in_o common_a with_o the_o people_n so_o they_o may_v learn_v how_o to_o make_v use_n of_o the_o historical_a part_n of_o the_o bible_n and_o learn_v to_o draw_v doctrine_n and_o instruction_n out_o of_o the_o example_n
thereof_o fit_a for_o the_o people_n and_o that_o out_o of_o the_o bad_a as_o well_o as_o the_o good_a even_o as_o well_o as_o out_o of_o other_o scripture_n which_o all_o have_v not_o learned_a to_o do_v neither_o have_v attain_v unto_o and_o therefore_o do_v oft_o time_n offer_v violence_n to_o the_o scripture_n by_o make_v allegory_n of_o they_o and_o so_o wrest_v they_o to_o another_o sense_n then_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v make_v of_o they_o without_o which_o manner_n of_o handle_v they_o they_o can_v draw_v none_o or_o little_a matter_n out_o of_o the_o most_o example_n in_o the_o story_n of_o they_o and_o so_o beside_o that_o their_o doctrine_n be_v not_o sound_o gather_v so_o they_o give_v too_o fearful_a suspicion_n to_o the_o ignorant_a that_o such_o part_n of_o the_o scripture_n be_v barren_a and_o dry_a while_o they_o do_v by_o such_o shift_n and_o yet_o indirect_a so_o hardly_o draw_v matter_n and_o doctrine_n out_o of_o they_o when_o yet_o it_o be_v certain_a and_o clear_a that_o they_o be_v full_a of_o sound_a instruction_n but_o to_o come_v to_o my_o purpose_n i_o will_v now_o set_v down_o some_o general_a thing_n before_o i_o enter_v into_o the_o text_n which_o may_v give_v some_o light_n to_o the_o better_a understanding_n of_o the_o whole_a book_n such_o as_o i_o gather_v partly_o by_o observe_v &_o lay_v together_o that_o which_o i_o read_v in_o it_o compare_v one_o thing_n with_o another_o and_o partly_o out_o of_o that_o learned_a and_o reverend_a father_n master_n peter_n martyr_n who_o work_n neither_o the_o most_o private_a man_n can_v understand_v nor_o many_o minister_n though_o they_o may_v understand_v they_o can_v come_v by_o neither_o if_o they_o can_v shall_v they_o find_v there_o that_o which_o shall_v be_v much_o for_o their_o simple_a hearer_n benefit_n and_o first_o let_v the_o reader_n mark_n how_o this_o book_n agree_v with_o all_o the_o former_a from_o genesis_n to_o the_o end_n of_o joshua_n and_o what_o be_v they_o be_v before_o for_o that_o purpose_n god_n do_v furnish_v they_o by_o and_o by_o after_o he_o have_v stir_v they_o up_o with_o most_o excellent_a gift_n for_o that_o end_n to_o the_o which_o he_o appoint_v they_o and_o it_o go_v far_o better_a with_o the_o people_n while_o they_o be_v under_o they_o than_o it_o do_v afterward_o when_o they_o will_v needs_o have_v a_o king_n to_o reign_v over_o they_o for_o they_o do_v always_o deliver_v the_o people_n of_o israel_n out_o of_o the_o calamity_n with_o which_o they_o be_v oppress_v whereas_o their_o king_n do_v sometime_o waste_v they_o and_o bring_v they_o into_o captivity_n and_o be_v the_o most_o part_n of_o they_o idolater_n and_o although_o under_o the_o judge_n the_o people_n be_v sometime_o oppress_v grievous_o by_o stranger_n and_o especial_o under_o samson_n by_o the_o philistines_n for_o why_o we_o must_v know_v their_o horrible_a sin_n deserve_v it_o and_o provoke_v god_n to_o deal_v with_o they_o in_o that_o manner_n yet_o they_o be_v never_o lead_v into_o captivity_n while_o they_o live_v with_o they_o again_o there_o be_v few_o of_o the_o king_n good_a man_n in_o israel_n not_o one_o the_o judge_n for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v all_o such_o a_o good_a testimony_n whereof_o we_o have_v in_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o hebrew_n where_o we_o thus_o read_v of_o the_o commendation_n of_o they_o the_o time_n will_v be_v too_o short_a
through_o the_o harden_v of_o their_o heart_n when_o yet_o if_o they_o can_v confider_v aright_o of_o it_o even_o that_o be_v the_o great_a punishment_n of_o all_o and_o although_o they_o rise_v out_o
