petition_n by_o new_a occurrence_n of_o matter_n from_o god_n providence_n and_o by_o the_o enlargement_n of_o the_o help_n of_o god_n spirit_n nor_o so_o to_o limit_v himself_o as_o to_o stick_v long_o in_o any_o set_a form_n of_o prayer_n lest_o it_o turn_v into_o a_o customary_a and_o empty_a form_n contrary_a to_o the_o watchfullnesse_n unto_o prayer_n which_o must_v be_v religious_o keep_v of_o all_o grow_a christian_n 2._o a_o man_n may_v give_v unto_o another_o holy_a direction_n and_o rule_n for_o prayer_n and_o may_v also_o set_v down_o some_o form_n of_o prayer_n as_o example_n of_o such_o rule_n but_o not_o to_o prescribe_v they_o as_o set_v form_n to_o they_o to_o be_v use_v by_o they_o for_o their_o prayer_n 3._o a_o man_n that_o read_v a_o form_n of_o prayer_n warrant_n to_o read_v out_o of_o a_o prayer_n book_n the_o public_a prayer_n of_o a_o church_n then_o out_o of_o a_o book_n of_o homily_n to_o read_v the_o public_a sermon_n of_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o church_n 3._o we_o account_v it_o alike_o if_o not_o more_o unlawful_a for_o ancestor_n to_o prescribe_v or_o enjoin_v set_v form_n of_o prayer_n to_o their_o posterity_n or_o for_o one_o church_n to_o prescribe_v set_v form_n of_o prayer_n unto_o another_o 4._o we_o hold_v it_o in_o like_a manner_n unlawful_a for_o one_o church_n to_o receive_v such_o set_a form_n of_o prayer_n from_o another_o and_o to_o use_v they_o for_o their_o own_o prayer_n 5._o we_o take_v it_o to_o be_v unlawful_a also_o for_o the_o people_n of_o god_n to_o join_v in_o such_o prayer_n which_o be_v so_o divise_v and_o prescribe_v to_o be_v read_v unto_o they_o and_o to_o be_v offer_v up_o in_o their_o name_n as_o their_o prayer_n to_o apply_v these_o thing_n more_o punctual_o to_o the_o particular_a branch_n of_o the_o question_n as_o they_o be_v propose_v and_o state_v by_o you_o for_o your_o first_o branch_n we_o do_v not_o make_v it_o a_o controversy_n whether_o it_o be_v lawful_a to_o make_v of_o the_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n we_o be_v not_o ignorant_a that_o there_o be_v also_o a_o sinful_a form_n and_o manner_n of_o worship_n which_o be_v forbid_v in_o the_o three_o commandment_n as_o as_o the_o form_n of_o their_o worship_n and_o the_o help_n of_o their_o devotion_n we_o find_v no_o commandment_n nor_o pattern_n for_o they_o in_o the_o word_n nor_o any_o promise_n for_o their_o acceptance_n they_o be_v enjoin_v for_o help_n and_o mean_n of_o god_n worship_n which_o god_n have_v not_o sanctify_v and_o for_o form_n of_o worship_n which_o god_n have_v not_o acknowledge_v and_o church_n to_o who_o they_o write_v we_o doubt_v not_o but_o that_o the_o church_n to_o who_o the_o letter_n be_v send_v find_v the_o petition_n suitable_a to_o their_o condition_n may_v lawful_o go_v along_o therewith_o in_o spirit_n and_o in_o the_o end_n say_v amen_o thereto_o and_o so_o make_v it_o their_o own_o prayer_n but_o yet_o here_o be_v two_o thing_n different_a from_o the_o case_n in_o hand_n first_o they_o that_o pen_v such_o prayer_n do_v not_o prescribe_v they_o as_o form_n of_o prayer_n for_o the_o brethren_n to_o use_v leave_v they_o free_o to_o their_o liberty_n 2._o they_o that_o take_v they_o up_o occasional_o for_o their_o present_a use_n and_o make_v they_o their_o prayer_n they_o do_v not_o set_v they_o apart_o to_o be_v read_v for_o their_o ordinary_a prayer_n either_o in_o public_a or_o in_o private_a which_o seem_v to_o we_o a_o matter_n of_o weighty_a consideration_n and_o make_v a_o great_a difference_n in_o the_o cause_n in_o hand_n to_o clear_v it_o by_o a_o familiar_a instance_n a_o man_n pass_v through_o a_o bury_a place_n may_v see_v a_o dead_a man_n scalp_n cast_v up_o and_o thereby_o take_v occasion_n from_o the_o present_a object_n to_o meditate_v for_o the_o present_a on_o his_o mortality_n and_o to_o prepare_v for_o like_a change_n but_o if_o he_o shall_v take_v up_o and_o keep_v that_o dead_a man_n scalp_n in_o his_o closet_n or_o bed_n chamber_n to_o be_v a_o ordinary_a help_n to_o he_o to_o put_v he_o in_o mind_n daily_o of_o his_o mortality_n now_o in_o so_o do_v he_o make_v a_o image_n of_o it_o to_o himself_o by_o set_v mortaliy_v as_o it_o be_v set_v before_o he_o occasional_o by_o god_n providence_n wherein_o he_o do_v well_o according_a to_o the_o second_o commandment_n not_o to_o pass_v by_o such_o a_o passage_n of_o god_n providence_n in_o vain_a but_o in_o the_o latter_a case_n in_o set_v it_o a_o part_n to_o be_v a_o ordinary_a help_n to_o he_o in_o such_o meditation_n or_o enjoin_v the_o same_o to_o other_o he_o in_o so_o do_v make_v it_o to_o he_o and_o they_o a_o image_n it_o not_o be_v institute_v or_o sanctify_v by_o god_n but_o devise_v and_o set_v apart_o by_o man_n for_o such_o a_o spiritual_a end_n which_o be_v forbid_v in_o the_o second_o commandment_n if_o it_o be_v say_v again_o when_o i_o read_v prayer_n and_o sin_v some_o petition_n therein_o that_o suit_n well_o with_o i_o may_v not_o therefore_o take_v up_o a_o whole_a sermon_n pen_v by_o another_o and_o preach_v it_o for_o my_o own_o though_o it_o be_v never_o so_o fit_a for_o my_o text_n and_o for_o my_o own_o congregation_n whence_o also_o another_o reason_n and_o in_o our_o apprehension_n of_o just_a weight_n may_v be_v allege_v against_o the_o ordinary_a use_n of_o set_a form_n of_o prayer_n devise_v
