A96358 The charitable farmer of Somersetshire: or, God's great and vvonderful vvork. Being a true relation of an honest, godly man, that lived at Welling, within three mile of the city of Wells, which sold his wheat to poor people at six shillings a bushel, when the market price was ten and eleven shillings, for which he was much derided and scoft at, by his rich neighbours: but was recompenced by an extraordinary crap [sic] of wheat, like never before heard of, each stolk of straw, having divers full large ears, some seven, some eight, nine, and ten, so to thirteen, but generally ten ears on every straw throughout the field, which was ten acres and upwards, of which, divers ears are to be seen at divers coffee-houses in the city of London. Likewise a pattern of all covetous greedy-minded men, to be charitable unto their poor neighbours, from the consideration of so remarkable an example. / By Law. White. the_o charitable_a farmer_n of_o somersetshire_n or_o god_n great_a and_o wonderful_a work_n be_v a_o true_a relation_n of_o a_o honest_a godly_a man_n that_o live_v at_o welling_n within_o three_o mile_n of_o the_o city_n of_o well_n which_o sell_v his_o wheat_n to_o poor_a people_n at_o six_o shilling_n a_o bushel_n when_o the_o market_n price_n be_v ten_o and_o eleven_o shilling_n for_o which_o he_o be_v much_o deride_v and_o scoff_v at_o by_o his_o rich_a neighbour_n but_o be_v recompense_v by_o a_o extraordinary_a crap_n of_o wheat_n the_o like_a never_o before_o hear_v of_o each_o stolk_n of_o straw_n have_v divers_a full_a large_a ear_n some_o seven_o some_o eight_o nine_o and_o ten_o so_o to_o thirteen_o but_o general_o ten_o ear_n on_o every_o straw_n throughout_o the_o field_n which_o be_v ten_o acre_n and_o upward_o of_o which_o divers_a ear_n be_v to_o be_v see_v at_o divers_a coffeehouse_n in_o the_o city_n of_o london_n likewise_o a_o pattern_n for_o all_o covetous_a greedy-minded_n man_n to_o be_v charitable_a unto_o their_o poor_a neighbour_n from_o the_o consideration_n of_o so_o remarkable_a a_o example_n by_o law_n white_n he_o find_v seed_n to_o the_o sour_a and_o bread_n for_o food_n and_o will_v multiply_v your_o seed_n and_o increase_v fruit_n of_o your_o benevolence_n 2_o cor._n 9.10_o he_o that_o withholdeth_a corn_n the_o people_n shall_v curse_v but_o blessing_n shall_v be_v upon_o the_o head_n of_o he_o that_o sell_v it_o prov_n 11.26_o good_a people_n i_o will_v desire_v you_o to_o draw_v near_o and_o spare_v so_o much_o time_n as_o the_o read_n of_o this_o little_a book_n will_v take_v read_v over_o to_o you_o for_o it_o be_v such_o a_o subject_a that_o the_o old_a man_n or_o woman_n live_v never_o hear_v the_o like_a nor_o chronicle_n do_v not_o make_v mention_n of_o such_o another_o wonder_n i_o think_v it_o be_v very_o well_o know_v to_o any_o sober_a christian_a that_o the_o wickedness_n of_o the_o time_n have_v draw_v god_n judgement_n on_o we_o sufficient_o of_o late_a day_n that_o be_v i_o mean_v within_o these_o ten_o year_n when_o first_o the_o sickness_n the_o lord_n pour_v on_o we_o which_o make_v thousand_o of_o rich_a people_n fall_v from_o all_o their_o pride_n and_o bravery_n into_o a_o shroud_n and_o coffin_n and_o their_o carcase_n that_o in_o their_o life_n time_n be_v so_o pompare_v up_o with_o the_o best_a that_o this_o sinful_a world_n can_v afford_v yet_o at_o last_o in_o a_o short_a time_n become_v a_o prey_n for_o worm_n but_o no_o soon_o the_o lord_n have_v cause_v the_o destroy_a angle_n to_o cease_v but_o we_o like_o disobedient_a child_n as_o soon_o as_o the_o rod_n of_o correction_n be_v over_o return_v to_o our_o old_a sinful_a way_n which_o raise_v the_o lord_n indignation_n against_o we_o and_o even_o force_v the_o lord_n to_o kindle_v a_o fire_n among_o we_o as_o we_o find_v to_o the_o ruin_n of_o many_o thousand_o of_o they_o who_o he_o preserve_v alive_a in_o the_o sickness_n time_n methinks_v the_o thought_n of_o those_o high_a &_o dreadful_a flame_n shall_v never_o be_v out_o of_o your_o mind_n methinks_v i_o hear_v still_o the_o great_a crake_a of_o the_o timber_n and_o the_o noise_n of_o people_n some_o cry_v i_o be_o undo_v other_o pray_v it_o may_v not_o come_v to_o their_o house_n other_o crying_z a_o hundred_o pound_n for_o a_o cart_n to_o carry_v but_o one_o load_n of_o good_n away_o the_o shriek_n and_o cry_v of_o woman_n in_o childbed_n in_o the_o field_n poor_a infant_n cry_v with_o hunger_n to_o their_o parent_n but_o alas_o what_o do_v i_o talk_v of_o these_o i_o shall_v be_v but_o laugh_v at_o by_o some_o for_o rehearse_v of_o this_o judgement_n for_o i_o believe_v it_o be_v no_o more_o thought_n on_o by_o some_o as_o if_o it_o have_v never_o be_v and_o i_o fear_v by_o too_o many_o of_o they_o that_o suffer_v by_o this_o calamity_n but_o now_o behold_v the_o mercy_n of_o the_o lord_n what_o a_o great_a blessing_n he_o bestow_v on_o the_o bvilder_n of_o this_o city_n to_o raise_v so_o many_o great_a and_o stately_a fabric_n out_o of_o a_o heap_n of_o rubbish_n to_o the_o wonderment_n of_o the_o whole_a world_n for_o which_o his_o holy_a name_n be_v praise_v for_o ever_o ever_o amen_n but_o neither_o mercy_n nor_o judgement_n of_o god_n will_v work_v upon_o some_o people_n conscience_n it_o be_v but_o the_o other_o day_n since_o the_o war_n kill_v so_o many_o of_o our_o brave_a seaman_n both_o knight_n squire_n and_o gentleman_n and_o many_o other_o who_o life_n be_v as_o sweet_a to_o they_o as_o the_o rest_n which_o have_v leave_v a_o many_o poor_a widow_n and_o fatherless_a child_n behind_o that_o now_o stand_v in_o great_a need_n of_o their_o husband_n and_o child_n their_o father_n that_o be_v fain_o to_o pinch_v and_o go_v with_o many_o hungry_a belly_n over_o they_o do_v before_o the_o war_n come_v but_o now_o for_o i_o to_o come_v to_o my_o intend_a matter_n which_o be_v a_o thing_n so_o strange_a that_o will_v cause_v a_o wonderment_n from_o all_o those_o that_o know_v what_o belong_v to_o the_o subject_n which_o i_o be_o ready_a to_o declare_v if_o you_o will_v have_v the_o patience_n to_o stay_v but_o a_o short_a time_n till_o i_o rehearse_v it_o over_o i_o hope_v you_o will_v not_o think_v much_o of_o your_o time_n nor_o your_o penny_n neither_o if_o you_o buy_v the_o book_n i_o believe_v it_o be_v very_o well_o know_v to_o all_o by_o sad_a experience_n i_o fear_v too_o many_o of_o the_o poor_a sort_n that_o most_o kind_n of_o provision_n have_v of_o late_o be_v deer_n and_o more_o particular_o breed_v which_o be_v the_o staff_n of_o life_n wheat_n be_v sell_v in_o several_a place_n of_o england_n for_o ten_o and_o eleven_o shilling_n a_o bushel_n or_o strike_v in_o which_o scarcity_n many_o poor_a people_n suffer_v through_o the_o wretched_a covetousness_n of_o some_o rich_a farmer_n who_o keep_v up_o their_o corn_n on_o purpose_n to_o make_v a_o dearth_n and_o will_v not_o bring_v it_o to_o market_n till_o they_o have_v get_v it_o to_o such_o a_o rate_n that_o the_o poor_a can_v not_o reach_v as_o if_o it_o have_v be_v their_o delight_n to_o starve_v the_o poor_a it_o rise_v from_o ten_o to_o eleven_o and_o so_o to_o twelve_o and_o upward_o all_o the_o last_o spring_n in_o many_o place_n in_o this_o kingdom_n which_o cause_v many_o rise_n by_o the_o poor_a sort_n of_o people_n in_o several_a market_n to_o cut_v the_o bagars_n sack_n in_o piece_n that_o be_v those_o man_n that_o buy_v corn_n in_o cheap_a market_n and_o carry_v it_o to_o other_o place_n &_o there_o make_v their_o prize_n on_o it_o and_o so_o hoyst_n up_o the_o market_n in_o both_o place_n where_o they_o buy_v it_o and_o sell_v it_o i_o see_v one_o wednesday_n in_o woolverhampton_n market_n this_o spring_n above_o a_o hundred_o of_o man_n old_a and_o young_a in_o arm_n and_o cut_v those_o bager_n sack_n and_o take_v their_o corn_n and_o fill_v their_o pocket_n with_o it_o and_o say_v their_o wife_n and_o child_n be_v ready_a to_o starve_v and_o at_o oster_n in_o worcestershire_n be_v another_o rise_n by_o the_o poor_a against_o the_o rich_a farmer_n for_o hoard_v up_o their_o corn_n and_o at_o wastle_n be_v the_o same_o at_o sturbridge_n and_o bromsgrove_n and_o many_o other_o market_n in_o and_o about_o england_n which_o be_v too_o many_o to_o set_v down_o here_o for_o shall_v i_o tell_v you_o the_o poor_a suffer_v so_o much_o hunger_n that_o they_o be_v fain_o to_o make_v bread_n for_o their_o poor_a child_n with_o pease_n and_o bean_n and_o be_v expose_v to_o much_o want_n and_o hardship_n &_o yet_o poor_a soul_n after_o it_o be_v bake_v it_o go_v down_o with_o poor_a little_a babe_n as_o sweet_a as_o honey_n when_o they_o be_v fain_o to_o take_v a_o hatchet_n and_o chap_v it_o to_o piece_n and_o true_o they_o may_v have_v eat_v stone_n if_o it_o have_v be_v possible_a before_o they_o can_v have_v find_v any_o love_n or_o charity_n from_o these_o greedy_a covetous_a man_n that_o sell_v their_o corn_n at_o such_o a_o dear_a rate_n as_o one_o above_o all_o the_o rest_n that_o bring_v his_o corn_n to_o sell_v in_o wolverhampton_n market_n in_o the_o county_n of_o stafford_n have_v sell_v his_o wheat_n three_o or_o four_o market-day_n together_o for_o nine_o or_o ten_o shilling_n a_o strike_v when_o the_o five_o day_n he_o have_v bring_v a_o greatquantity_v of_o corn_n to_o sell_v expect_v it_o will_v have_v rise_v still_o but_o it_o do_v not_o fall_v out_o according_a to_o his_o desire_n but_o fall_v six_o penny_n in_o a_o strike_v to_o the_o great_a content_n of_o the_o poor_a which_o do_v so_o heart-burn_a this_o greedy_a covetous_a miser_n that_o he_o will_v
