to sacrifice sacrifices of peace-offerings * Ch. 13.8 seven days shalt thou tarry till I come to thee and shew thee what thou shalt do 9 ¶ And it was so that when he had turned his †Heb. shoulder back to go from Samuel God †Heb. turned gave him another heart and all those signs came to pass that day 10 And when they came thither to the hill behold a company of prophets met him and the spirit of God came upon him and he prophesied among them 11 And it came to pass when all that knew him before time saw that behould he prophesied among the prophets then the people said †Heb. a man to his neighbour one to another What is this that is come unto the son of Kish * Ch. 19.24 Is Saul also among the prophets 12 And one †Heb. from thence of the same place answered and said But who is their father Therefore it became a proverb Is Saul also among the prophets 13 And when he had made an end of prophesying he came to the high place 14 ¶ And Sauls uncle said unto him and to his servant Whither went ye And he said To seek the asses and when we saw that they were no where we came to Samuel 15 And Sauls uncle said Tell me I pray thee what Samuel said unto you 16 And Saul said unto his uncle He told us plainly that the asses were found But of the matter of the kingdom whereof Samuel spake he told him not 17 ¶ And Samuel called the people together unto the LORD to Mizpeh 18 And said unto the children of Israel Thus saith the LORD God of Israel I brought up Israel out of Egypt and delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of all kingdoms and of them that oppressed you 19 And ye have this day rejected your God who himself saved you out of all your adversities and your tribulations and ye have said unto him Nay but set a king over us Now therefore present your selves before the LORD by your tribes and by your thousands 20 And when Samuel had caused all the tribes of Israel to come near the tribe of Benjamin was taken 21 When he had caused the tribe of Benjamin to come near by their families the family of Matri was taken and Saul the son of Kish was taken and when they sought him he could not be found 22 Therefore they enquired of the LORD further if the man should yet come thither and the LORD answered Behold he hath hid himself among the stuff 23 And they ran an fetched him thence and when he stood among the people he was higher then any of the people from his shoulders and upward 24 And Samuel said to all the people See ye him whom the LORD hath chosen that there is none like him among all the people And all the people shouted and said †Heb. Let the king live God save the king 25 Then Samuel told the people the manner of the kingdom and wrote it in a book and said it up before the LORD and Samuel sent all the people away every man to his house 26 ¶ And Saul also went home to Gibeah and there went with him a band of men whose hearts God had touched 27 But the children of Belial said How shall this man save us And they despised him and brought him no presents but ‖ Or he was as thouth he had been deaf he held his peace CHAP. XI 1 Nahash offereth them of Jabesh-giâ—ead a reproachful condition 4 They send messengers and are delivered by Saul 12 Sual thereby is confirmed and his kingdom renewed THen Nahash the Ammonite came up and encamped against Jabesh-gilead and all the men of Jabesh said unto Nahash Make a covenant with us and we will serve thee 2 And Nahash the Ammonite answered them On this condition will I make a covenant with you that I may thrust out all your right eyes and lay it for a reproach upon all Israel 3 And the elders of Jabesh said unto him †Heb. Forbear us Give us seven days respite that we may send messengers unto all the coasts of Israel and then if there be no man to save us we will come out to thee 4 ¶ Then came the messengers to Gibeah of Saul and told the tidings in the ears of the people and all the people lift up their voices and wept 5 And behold Saul came after the herd out of the field and Saul said What aileth the people that they weep and they told him the tidings of the men of Jabesh 6 And the spirit of God came upon Saul when he heard those tidings and his anger was kind led greatly 7 And he took a yoke of oxen and hewed them in pieces and sent them throughout all the coasts of Israel by the hands of messengers saying Whosoever cometh not forth after Saul and after Samuel so shall it be done unto his oxen and the fear of the LORD fell on the people and they came out †Heb. as one man with one consent 8 And when he numbred them in Bezek the children of Israel were three hundred thousand and the men of Judah thirty thousand 9 And they said unto the messengers that came Thus shall ye say unto the men of Jabesh-gilead To morrow by that time the sun be hot ye shall have †Or deliverance help And the messengers came and shewed it to the men of Jabesh and they were glad 10 Therefore the men of Jabesh said To morrow we will come out unto you and ye shall do with us all that seemeth good unto you 11 And it was so on the morrow that Saul put the people in three companies and they came into the midst of the host in the morning watch and slew the Ammonites until the heat of the day and it came to pass that they which remained were scattered so that two of them were not left together 12 ¶ And the people said unto Samuel Who is he that said Shall Saul reign over us bring the men that we may put them to death 13 And Saul said There shall not a man be put to death this day for to day the LORD hath wrought salvation in Israel 14 Then said Samuel to the people Come and let us go to Gilgal and renew the kingdom there 15 And all the people went to Gilgal and there they made Saul king before the LORD in Gilgal and there they sacrificed sacrifices of peace-offerings before the LORD and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoyced greatly CHAP. XII 1 Samuel testifieth his integrity 6 He reproveth the people of ingratitude 16 He terrifieth them with thunder in harvest-time 20 He comforteth them in Gods mercy ANd Samuel said unto all Israel Behold I have hearkned unto your voice in all that ye said unto me and have made a king over you 2 And now behold the king walketh
the king that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem building the rebellious and the bad city and have ‖ Or finished set up the walls thereof and †Cald. sowed together joyned the foundations 13 Be it known now unto the king that it this city be builded and the walls set up again then will they not †Cald. â—â—e pay toll tribute and custom and so thou shalt endamage the ‖ Or strength revenue of the kings 14 Now because †Cald. We are salted with the sâ—lt of the palace we have maintenance from the kings palace and it was not meet for us to see the kings dishonour therefore have we sent and certified the king 15 That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers so shalt thou finde in the book of the records and know that this city is a rebellious city and hurtful unto kings and provinces and that they have †Cald. made moved sedition †Cald. in the midst thereof within the same of old time for which cause was this city destroyed 16 We certifie the king that if this city be builded again and the walls thereof set up by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river 17 ¶ Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellour and to Shimshai the scribe and to the rest of their †Cald. societies companions that dwell in Samaria and unto the rest beyond the river Peace and at such a time 18 The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me 19 And †Cald. by me a decree is set I commanded and search hath been made and it is found that this city of old time hath †Cald. lifted up it self made insurrection against kings and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein 20 There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem which have ruled over all countreys beyond the river and full tribute and custom was paid unto them 21 †Cald. maâ—e a decree Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease and that this city be not builded until another commandment shall be given from me 22 Take heed now that ye sail not to do this why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings 23 ¶ Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes letter was read before Rehum and Shimshai the scribe and their companions they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews and made them to cease †Cald. by arm and power by force and power 24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia CHAP. V. 1 Zerubbabel and Jeshua incited by Haggai and Zechariah set forward the building of the temple 3 Tatnai and Shethar-boznai could not hinder the Jews 6 Their letter to Darius against the Jews THen the prophets * Hag. 1.1 Haggai the prophet and * Zech. 1.1 Zechariah the son of Iddo prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel even unto them 2 Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem and with them were the prophets of God helping them 3 ¶ At the same time came to them Tatnai governour on this side the river and Shethar-boznai and their companions and said thus unto them Who hath commanded you to build this house and to make up this wall 4 Then said we unto them after this manner What are the names of the men †Cald. that build this building that make this building 5 Buâ— the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews that they could not cause them to cease tâ—ll the matter came to Darius and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter 6 ¶ The copy of the letter that Tatnai governour on this side the river and Shethar-boznai and his companions the Apharsachites which were on this side the river sent unto Darius the king 7 They sent a letter unto him †Cald. in the midst whereof wherein was written thus Unto Darius the king all peace 8 Be it known unto the king that we went into the Province of Judea to the house of the great God which is builded with †Cald. stones of rolling great stones and timber is laid in the walls and this work goeth fast on and prospereth in their hands 9 Then asked we those elders and said unto them thus Who commanded you to build this house and to make up these walls 10 We asked their names also to certifie thee that we might write the names of the men that were the chief of them 11 And thus they returned us answer saying We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth and build the house that was builded these many years ago which a great king of Israel builded * 1 King 6.1 and set up 12 But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath he gave them into the hand of * 2 King 24.2 25.8 Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon the Caldean who destroyed this house and carryed the people away into Babylon 13 But in the first year of * Chap. 1.1 Cyrus the king of Babylon the same king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God 14 And * Chap. 1.7 8. 6.5 the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem and brought them into the temple of Babylon those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon and they were delivered unto one whose name was Sheshbazzar whom he had made ‖ Or deputy governour 15 And said unto him Take these vessels go carry them into the temple that is in Jerusalem and let the house of God be builded in his place 16 Then came the same Sheshbazzar and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem And since that time even until now hath it been in building and yet it is not finished 17 Now therefore if it seem good to the king let there be search made in the kings treasure-house which is there at Babylon whether it be so that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter CHAP. VI. 1 Darius finding the decree of Cyrus maketh a new decree for the advancement of the building 13 By the help of the enemies and the directions of the prophets the temple is finished 16 The feast of the dedication is kept 19 and the pass-over THen Darius the king made a decree and search was made in the house of the †Cald. books rolls
they went to burn incense and to serve other gods whom they knew not neither they you nor your fathers 4 Howbeit I sent unto you all my servants the prophets rising eâ—â—ly and sending them saying Oh do not this abominable thing that I hate 5 But they hearkned not nor inclined their ear to turn from their wickedness to burn no incense unto other gods 6 Wherefore my fury and mine anger was poured forth and was kindled in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem and they are wasted and desolate as at this day 7 Therefore now thus saith the LORD the God of hosts the God of Israel Wherefore commit ye this great evil against your souls to cut off from you man and woman childe and suckling †Heb. out of the midst of Juâ—â—â— out of Judah to leave you none to remain 8 In that ye provoke me unto wrath with the works of your hands burning incense unto other gods in the land of Egypt whither ye be gone to dwell that ye might cut your selves off and that ye might be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth 9 Have ye forgotten the †Heb. wickednesses or â—â—nishments c. wickedness of your fathers and the wickedneâ—s of the kings of Judah and the wickedness of their wives and your own wickedness and the wickedness of your wives which they have committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem 10 They are not †Heb. contrite humbled even unto this day neither have they feared nor walked in my law nor in my statutes that I set before you and before your fathers 11 ¶ Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Behold * Auâ—â—s 9.4 I will set my face against you for evil and to cut off all Judah 12 And I will take the remnant of Judah that have set their faces to go into the land of Egypt to sojourn there and they shall all be consumed and fall in the land of Egypt they shall even be consumed by the sword and by the famine they shall die from the least even unto the greatest by the sword and by the famine and they shall be an execration and an astonishment and a curse and a reproach 13 For I will punish them that dwell in the land of Egypt as I havâ— punished Jerusalem by the sword by the famine and by the pentilence 14 So that none of the remnant of Judah which are gone into the land or Egypt to so journ there shall escape or remain that they should return into the land of Judah to the which they †Heb. â—ift up their soul have a desire to return to dwell there for none shall return but such as shall escape 15 ¶ Then all the men which knew that their wives had burnt incense unto other gods and all the women that stood by a great multitude even all the people that dwelt in the land of Egypt in Pathies answered Jeremiah saying 16 As for the word that thou hast spoken unto us in the name of the LORD we will not hearken unto thee 17 But we will certainly do whatsoever thing goeth forth out of our own mouth to burn incense unto the ‖ Or. frame of heaâ—en * Chap. 7.18 queen of heaven and to pour out drink-offerings unto her as we have done we and our fathers our kings and our princes in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem for then had we plenty of †Heb. bread victuals and were well and saw no evil 18 But since we lest off to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink-offerings unto her we have wanted all things and have been consumed by the sword and by the famine 19 * Chap. â— 18 And when we burnt incense to the queen of heaven and poured out drink-offerings unto her did we make her cakes to worship her and pour out drink-offerings unto her without our ‖ Or husbandâ— men 20 ¶ Then Jeremiah said unto all the people to the men and to the women and to all the people which had given him that answer saying 21 The incense that ye burnt in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem ye and your fathers your kings and your princes and the people of the land did not the LORD remember them and came it not into his minde 22 So that the LORD could no longer bear because of the evil of your doings and because of the abominations which ye have committed therefore is your land a desolation and an astonishment and a curse without an inhabitant as at this day 23 Because you have burnt incense and because ye have sinned against the LORD and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD not walked in his law nor in his statutes nor in his testimomes therefore this evil is hapned unto you as at this day 24 Moreover Jeremiah said unto all the people and to all the women Hear the word of the LORD all Judah that are in the land of Egypt 25 Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel saying Ye and your wives have both spoken with your mouthes and fulfilled with your hand saying We will surely perform our vows that we have vowed to burn incense to the queen of heaven and to pour out drink-offering unto her ye will surely accomplish your vows and surely perform your vows 26 Therefore hear ye the word of the LORD all Judah that dwell in the land of Egypt Behold I have sworn by my great name saith the LORD that my name shall no more be named in the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt saying The Lord GOD liveth 27 Behold I will watch over them for evil and not for good and all the men of Judah that are in the land of Egypt shall be consumed by the sword and by the famine until there be an end of them 28 Yet a small number that escape the sword shall return out of the land of Egypt into the land of Judah and all the remnant of Judah that are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there shall know whore words shall stand †Heb. from 〈◊〉 or from them mine or theirs 29 ¶ And this shall be a signe unto you saith the LORD that I will punâ—â—â— you in this place that ye may know that my words shall surely stand against you for evil 30 Thus saith the LORD Behold I will give Pharaoh-hophra king of Egypt into the hand of his enemies and into the hand of them that seek his life as I gave Zedekiah king of Judah into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon his enemy and that sought his life CHAP. XLV 1 Baruch being dismâ—â—ed 4 Jeremiah instructeth and comforteth him THe word that Jeremiah the prophet spake unto Baruch the son of Neriah when he had written these words in a book at
another nation without both by speaking and writing my grandfather Jesus when he had much given himself to the reading of the law and the prophets and other books of our fathers and had gotten therein good judgement was drawn on also himself to write something pertaining to learning and wisdom to the intent that those which are desirous to learn and are addâ—cted to these things might profit much more in living according to the law Wherefore let me intreat you to read it with favour and attention and to pardon us wherein we may seem to come short of some words which we have laboured to interpret For the same things uttered in Hebrew and translated into another tongue have not the same force in them and not onely these things but the law it self and the †Gr. prophesies prophets and the rest of the books have no small ‖ Or excellency difference when they are spoken in their own language For in the eight and thirtieth year coming into Egypt when Euergetes was king and continuing there some time I found a ‖ Or help of learning book of no small learning therefore I thought it most necessary for me to bestow some diligence and travel to interpret it using great watchfulness and skill in that space to bring the book to an end and set it forth for them also which in a strange countrey are willing to learn being prepared before in manners to live after the law CHAP. I. 1 All wisdom is from God 10 He giveth it to them that love him 12 The sear of God is full of many blessings 28 To fear God without hypocrisy ALl * 1 King 3.9 wisdom cometh from the Lord and is with him for ever 2 Who can number the sand of the sea and the drops of rain and the days of eternity 3 Who can finde out the height of heaven and the breadth of the earth and the deep and wisdom 4 Wisdom hath been created before all things and the understanding of prudence from everlasting 5 The word of God most High is the fountain of wisdom and her ways are everlasting commandments 6 * Rom. 11.34 To whom hath the root of wisdom been revealed or who hath known her wise counsels 7 Unto whom hath the knowledge of wisdom been made manifest and who hath understood her great experience 8 There is one wise and greatly to be feared the Lord sitting upon his throne 9 He created her and saw her and numbred her and poured her out upon all his works 10 She is with all flesh according to his gist and he hath given her to them that love him 11 The fear of the Lord is honour and glory and gladness and a crown of rejoycing 12 The fear of the Lord maketh a merry heart and giveth joy and gladness and a long life 13 Whoso feareth the Lord it shall go well with him at the last and he ‖ Or shall blessed shall finde favour in the day of his death 14 * Prov. 1.7 Ps 111.10 To fear the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and it was created with the faithful in the womb 15 She hath built an everlasting foundation with men and she shall continue * 2 Chr. 20.21 with their seed 16 To fear the Lord is fulness of wisdom and filleth men with her fruits 17 She filleth all their house with things desirable and the garners with her increase 18 The fear of the Lord is a crown of wisdom making peace and perfect health to flourish both which are the gifts of God and it enlargeth their rejoycing that love him 19 Wisdom raineth down skill and knowledge of understanding and exalteth them to honour that hold her fast 20 The root of wisdom is to fear the Lord and the branches thereof are long life 21 The fear of the Lord driveth away sins and where it is present it turneth away wrath 22 A furious man cannot ‖ Or escape punishment be justified for the sway of his fury shall be his destruction 23 A patient man will bear for a time and afterward joy shall spring up unto him 24 He will hide his words for a time and the lips of many shall declare his wisdom 25 The parables of knowledge are in the treasures of wisdom but godliness is an abomination to a sinner 26 If thou desire wisdom keep the commandments and the Lord shall give her unto thee 27 For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and instruction and faith and meekness are his delight 28 ‖ Or be not disobedient to Distrust not the fear of the Lord when thou art poor and come not unto him with a double heart 29 Be nor an hypocrite in the sight of men and take good heed what thou speakest 30 Exalt not thy fell lest thou fall and bring dishonour upon thy soul and so God discover thy secrets and cast thee down in the midst of the congregation because thou camest not in truth to the sear of the Lord but thy heart is full of deceit CHAP. Casleu we though it necessary to certifie you thereof that ye also might keep it as the feast of the tabernacles and of the fire which was given us when Neemias offered sacrifice after that he had builded the temple the altar 19 For when our fathers were led into Persia the priests that were then devout took the fire of the altar privily and hid it in a hollow place of a pit without water where they kept it sure so that the place was unknown to all men 20 Now after many years when it pleased God Neemias being sent from the king of Persia did send of the posterity of those priests that had hid it to the fire But when they told us they found no fire but thick water 21 Then commanded he them to draw it up and to bring it and when the sacrifices were laid on Neemias commanded the priests to sprinkle the wood and the things laid thereupon with the water 22 When this was done and the time came that the sun shone which afore was hid in the cloud there was a great fire kindled so that every man marvelled 23 And the priests made a prayer whilest the sacrifice was consuming I say both the priests and all the rest Jonathan beginning and the rest answering thereunto as Neemias did 24 And the prayer was after this manner O Lord Lord God Creatour of all things who art fearful and strong and righteous and merciful and the onely and gracious King 25 The onely giver of all things the onely just almighty and everlasting thou that deliverest Israel from all trouble and didst choose the fathers and sanctifie them 26 Receive the sacrifice for thy whole people Israel and preserve thine own portion and sanctifie it 27 Gather those together that are scattered from us deliver them that serve among the heathen look upon them that are despised and abhorred and let the heathen know that thou art our God 28 Punish them that oppress us and with pride do us wrong 29 Plant thy people again in thy holy place as Moses hath spoken 30 And the Priests sung psalms of thanksgiving 31 Now when the sacrifice was consumed Neemias commanded the water that was left to be poured on the great stones 32 When this was done there was kindled a flame but it was consumed by the light that shined from the altar 33 So when this matter was known it was told the king of Persia that in the place where the priests that were led away had hid the fire there appeared water and that ‖ Or Neemias his company Neemias had purified the sacrifices therewith 34 Then tâ—â— king inclosing the place made it holy after he had tried the matter 35 And the king took many gifts and bestowed thereof on those whom he would gratifie 36 And Neemias called this thing Naphthat which is as much as to say a cleansing but many men call it Nephi CHAP. II. 1 What Jeremy the prophet did 5 How be bid the tabernacle the ark and the altar 13 What Neemias and Judas wrote 20 What fason wrote in five books 25 And how those were abridged by the authour of this book IT is also found in the records that Jeremy the prophet commanded them that were carried away to take of the fire as it hath been signified 2 And how that the prophet having given them the law charged them not to forget the commandments of the Lord and that they should not err in their minds when they see images of silver and gold with their ornaments 3 And with other such speeches exhorted he them that the law should not depart from their hearts 4 It was also contained in the same writing that the prophet being warned of God commanded the tabernacle and the ark to go with him as he went forth into the mountain where Moses climbed up and saw the heritage of God 5 And when Jeremy came thither he found an hollow cave wherein he laid the tabernacle and the ark and the altar of incense and so stopped the door 6 And some of those that followed him came to mark the way but they could not finde it 7 Which when Jeremy perceived he blamed them saying As for that place it shall be unknown until the time that God gather his people again together and receive them unto mercy 8 Then shall the Lord shew them these things and the glory of the Lord shall appear and the cloud also as it was shewed under Moses and as when Solomon delired that the place might be honourably sanctified 9 It was also declared that he being wise offered the sacrifice of dedication and of the finishing of the temple 10 And as when Moses prayed unto the Lord the fire came down from heaven and consumed the sacrifices even so prayed Solomon also and the fire came down from heaven and consumed the burnt-offerings 11 And Moses said Because the sin-offering was not to be eaten it was consumed 12 So Solomon kept those eight days 13 The same things also were reported in the writings and commentaries of Neemias and how he founding a library gathered together the acts of the kings and the prophets and of David and the epistles of the kings concerning the holy gifts 14 In like manner also Judas gathered together all those things that were lost by reason of the war we had and they remain with us 15 Wherefore if ye have need thereof send some to fetch them unto you 16 Whereas we then are about to celebrate the purification we have written unto you and ye shall do well if ye keep the same days 17 †Gr. that eternal happiness which is above in heaven Then not to suffer this to fall to the ground but rather to take it up and to continue it in that state wherein the famous Predecessour of Your Highness did leave it nay to go forward with the confidence and resolution of a man in maintaining the truth of Christ and propagating it far and near is that which hath so bound and firmly knit the hearts of all Your Majesties loyal and religious people unto You that Your very name is precious among them their eye doth behold You with comfort and they bless You in their hearts as that sanctified Person who under God is the immediate Authour of their true happiness And this their contentment doth not diminish or decay but every day increaseth and taketh strength when they observe that the zeal of Your Majesty toward the house of God doth not flack or go backward but is more and more kindled manifesting it self abroad in the furthest parts of Christendom by writing in defence of the Truth which hath given such a blow unto that man of sin as will not be healed and every day at home by religious and learned discourse by frequenting the house of God by hearing the Word preached by cherishing the Teachers thereof by caring for the Church as a most tender and loving nursing Father There are infinite Arguments of this right Christian and religious affection in Your Majesty but none is more II. 1 Ruth gleaneth in the fields of Boaz. 4 Boaz taking knowledge of her 8 sheweth her great favour 18 That which she got she carrieth to Naomi ANd Naomi had a kinsman of her husbands a mighty man of wealth of the family of Elimelech and his name was Boaz. 2 And Ruth the Moabitess said unto Naomi Let me now go to the field and glean ears of corn after him in whose sight I shall finde grace And she said unto her Go my daughter 3 And she went and came and gleaned in the field after the reapers and her †Heb. hap hapned hap was to light on a part of the field belonging unto ‖ Called Mat. 1.5 Boaz. Boaz who was of the kindred of Elimelech 4 ¶ And behold Boaz came from Beth-lehem and said unto the reapers The LORD be with you and they answered him the LORD

IV. 1 Boaz calleth into judgement the next kinsman 6 He refuseth the redemption according to the manner in Israel 9 Boaz buyeth the inheritance 10 He marrieth Ruth 13 She beareth Obed the grandfather of David 18 The generation of Pharez THen went Boaz up to the gate and sat him down there and behold the kinsman of whom Boaz spake came by unto whom he said Ho such a one turn aside sit down here And he turned aside and sat down 2 And he took ten men of the elders of the city and said Sit ye down here And they sat down 3 And he said unto the kinsman Naomi that is come again out of the countrey of Moab selleth a parcel of land which was our brother Elimelechs 4 And †Heb. an invasion upon the south of the Cherethites and upon the coast which belongeth to Judah and upon the south of Caleb and we burnt Ziklag with fire 15 And David said to him Canst thou bring me down to this company And he said Swear unto me by God that thou wilt neither kill me nor deliver me into the hands of my master and I will bring thee down to this company 16 ¶ And when he had brought him down behold they were spread abroad upon all the earth eating and drinking and dancing because of all the great spoil that they had taken out of the land of the Philistines and out of the land of Judah 17 And David smote them from the twi-light even unto the evening of †Heb. their wiâ—â—ow the next day and there escaped not a man of them save four hundred young men which rode upon camels and fled 18 And David recovered all that the Amalekites had carried away and David rescued his two wives 19 And there was nothing lacking to them neither small nor great neither sons nor daughters neither spoil nor any thing that they had taken to them David recovered all 20 And David took all the flocks and the herds which they drave before those other cattel and said This is Davids spoil 21 ¶ And David came to the two hundred men which were so faint that they could not follow David whom they had made also to abide at the brook Besor and they went forth to meet David and to meet the people that were with him and when David came near to the people he ‖ Or asked them how they did saluted them 22 Then answered all the wicked men and men of Belial of †Heb. men those that went with David and said Because they went not with us we will not give them ought of the spoil that we have recovered save to every man his wife and his children that they may lead them away and depart 23 Then said David ye shall not do so my brethren with that which the LORD hath given us who hath preserved us and delivered the company that came against us into our hand 24 For who will hearken unto you in this matter but as his part is that goeth down to the battel so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff they shall part alike 25 And it was so from that day †Heb. and forward forward that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel unto this day 26 ¶ And when David came to Ziklag he sent of the spoil unto the elders of Judah even to his friends saying Behold a †Heb. blessing present for you of the spoil of the enemies of the LORD 27 To them which were in Beth-el and to them which were in south-Ramoth and to them which were in Jattir 28 And to them which were in Aroer and to them which were in Siphmoth and to them which were in Eshtemoa 29 And to them which were in Rachal and to them which were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites and to them which were in the cities of the Kenites 30 And to them which were in Hormah and to them which were in Chor-ashan and to them which were in Athach 31 And to them which were in Hebron and to all the places where David himself and his men were wont to haunt CHAP. XXXI 1 Saul having lost his army and his sons slain he and his armour-bearer kill themselves 7 The Philistines possess the forsaken towns of the Israelites 8 They triumph over the dead carcases 11 They of Jabesh-gilead recovering the bodies by night burn them at Jabesh and mournfully bury their bones NOw * 1 Chr. 10.1 the Philistines fought against Israel and the men of Israel fled from before the Philistines and fell down ‖ Or wounded slain in mount Gilboa 2 And the Philistines sollowed hard upon Saul and upon his sons and the Philistines slew Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchishua Sauls sons 3 And the battel went sore against Saul and the †Heb. shooters men with bowes archers †Heb. found him hit him and he was sore wounded of the archers 4 Then said Saul unto his armour-bearer Draw thy sword and thrust me through therewith lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through and ‖ Or mock me abuse me But his armour-bearer would not for he was sore afraid Therefore Saul took a sword and fell upon it 5 And when his armour-bearer saw that Saul was dead he fell likewise upon his sword and died with him 6 So Saul died and his three sons and his armour-bearer and all his men that same day together 7 ¶ And when the men of Israel that were on the other side of the valley and they that were on the other side Jordan saw that the men of Israel fled and that Saul and his sons were dead they forsook the cities and fled and the Philistines came and dwelt in them 8 And it came to pass on the morrow when the Philistines came to strip the slain that they found Saul and his three sons faln in mount Gilboa 9 And they cut off his head and stripped off his armour and sent into the land of the Philistines round about to publish it in the house of their idols and among the people 10 And they put his armour in the house of Ashtaroth and they fastned his body to the wall of Beth-shan 11 ¶ And when the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead heard ‖ Or concerning him of that which the Philistines had done to Saul 12 All the valiant men arose and went all night and took the body of Saul and the bodles of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan and came to Jabesh and * Jer. 34.5 burnt them there 13 And they took their bones and * 2 Sam. â— 4 buried them under a tree at Jabesh and fasted seven days ¶ The second book of SAMUEL otherwise called The second book of the KINGS CHAP. I. 1 The Amalekite who brought tidings of the overthrow and accused himself of Sauls death is slain 17 David lamenteth Saul and Jonathan with a song NOw it came to pass after the death of Saul when David was returned from * 1 Sam. 30.17 the slaughter of the Amalekites and David had abode two days in Ziklag 2 It came even to pass on the third day that behold a man came out of the camp from Saul with his clothes rent and earth upon his head and so it was when he came to David that he fell to the earth and did obeisance 3 And David said unto him From whence comest thou And he said unto him Out of the camp of Israel am I escaped 4 And David said unto him †Heb. What was c. How went the matter I pray thee tell me And he answered That the people are fled from the battel and many of the people also are faln and dead and Saul and Jonathan his son
the saying of Gad went up as the LORD commanded 20 And Araunah looked and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him and Araunah went out and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground 21 And Araunah said Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant And David said To buy the threshing-floor of thee to build an altar unto the LORD that the plague may be stayed from the people 22 And Araunah said unto David Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him behold here be oxen for burnt-sacrifice and threshing-instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood 23 All these things did Araunah as a king give unto the king and Araunah said unto the king The LORD thy God accept thee 24 And the king said unto Araunah Nay but I will surely buy it of thee at a price neither will I offer burnt-offerings unto the LORD my God of that which doth cost me nothing So David bought the tareshing-floor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver 25 And David built there an altar unto the LORD and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings so the LORD was intreated for the land and the plague was stayed from Israel The first book of the KINGS commonly called The third book of the KINGS CHAP. Let them seek Let there be sought for my lord the king †Heb. a damsel a virgin a young virgin and let her stand before the king and let her †Heb. be a cherisher unto him cherish him and let her lie in thy bosom that my lord the king may get heat 3 So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel and found Abishag a Shunammite and brought her to the king 4 And the damsel was very fair and cherished the king and ministred to him but the king knew her not 5 ¶ Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself saying I will †Heb. reign be king and he prepared him chariots and hors-men and fifty men to run before him 6 And his father had not displeased him †Heb. from his days at any time in saying Why hast thou done so and he also was a very goodly man and his mother bare him after Absalom 7 And †Heb. his words were with Joah he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest and they †Heb. helped after Adonijah following Adonijah helped him 8 But Zadok the priest and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and Nathan the prophet and Shimei and Rei and the mighty men which belonged to David were not with Adonijah 9 And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattel by the stone of Zoheleth which is by ‖ Or the well Rogel En rogel and called all his brethren the kings sons and all the men of Judah the kings servants 10 But Nathan the prophet and Benaiah and the mighty men and Solomon his brother he called not 11 ¶ Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bath-sheba the mother of Solomon saying Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of * 2 Sam. 3.4 Haggith doth reign and David our lord knoweth it not 12 Now therefore come let me I pray thee give thee counsel that thou mayest save thine own life and the life of thy son Solomon 13 Go and get thee in unto king David and say unto him Didst not thou my lord O king swear unto thine hand-maid saying Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me and he shall sit upon my throne why then doth Adonijah reign 14 Behold while thou yet talkest there with the king I will also come in after thee and †Heb. fill up confirm thy words 15 ¶ And Bath-sheba went in unto the king into the chamber and the king was very old and Abishag the Shunammite ministred unto the king 16 And Bath-sheba bowed and did obeisance unto the king and the king said †Heb. What to thâ— What wouldst thou 17 And she said unto him My lord thou swearest by the LORD thy God unto thine hand-maid saying Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me and he shall sit upon my throne 18 And now behold Adonijah reigneth and now my lord the king thou knowest it not 19 And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance and hath called all the sons of the king and Abiathar the priest and Joab the captain of the host but Solomon thy servant hath he not called 20 And thou my lord O king the eyes of all Israel are upon thee that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him 21 Otherwise it shall come to pass when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers that I and my son Solomon shall be counted †Heb. fiâ—â—â—â— offenders 22 ¶ And lo while she yet talked with the king Nathan the prophet also came in 23 And they told the king saying Behold Nathan the prophet And when he was come in before the king he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground 24 And Nathan said My lord O king hast thou said Adonijah shall reign after me and he shall sit upon my throne 25 For he is gone down this day and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance and hath called all the kings sons and the captains of the host and Abiathar the priest and behold they eat and drink before him and say †Heb. Let king Adonijah live God save king Adonijah 26 But me even me thy servant and Zadok the priest and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada and thy servant Solomon hath he not called 27 Is this thing done by my lord the king and thou hast not shewed it unto thy servant who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him 28 ¶ Then king David answered and said Call me Bath-sheba and she came †Heb. before the king into the kings presence and stood before the king 29 And the king sware and said As the LORD liveth that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress 30 Even as I sware unto thee by the LORD God of Israel saying Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead even
concubines and his wives turned away his heart 4 For it came to pass when Solomon was old that his wives turned away his heart after other gods and his heart was not perfect with the LORD his God as was the heart of David his father 5 For Solomon went after * Judg. 2.13 Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidonians and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites 6 And Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD and †Heb. fulfilled not after went not fully after the LORD as did David his father 7 Then did Solomon build an high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab in the hill that is before Jerusalem and for Molech the abomination of the children of Ammon 8 And likewise did he for all his strange wives which burnt incense and sacrificed unto their gods 9 ¶ And the LORD was angry with Solomon because his heart was turned from the LORD God of Israel * Ch. 3.5 9.2 which had appeared unto him twice 10 And * Ch. 6.12 had commanded him concerning this thing that he should not go after other gods but he kept not that which the LORD commanded 11 Wherefore the LORD said unto Solomon Forasmuch as this †Heb. is with thee is done of thee and thou hast not kept my covenant and my statutes which I have commanded thee * Ch. 12.15 I will surely rend the kingdom from thee and will give it to thy servant 12 Notwithstanding in thy days I will not do it for David thy fathers sake but I will rend it out of the hand of thy son 13 Howbeit I will not rend away all the kingdom but will give one tribe to thy son for David my servants sake and for Jerusalems sake which I have chosen 14 ¶ And the LORD stirred up an adversary unto Solomon Hadad the Edomite he was of the kings seed in Edom. 15 * 2 Sam. 8.14 For it came to pass when David was in Edom and Joab the captain of the host was gone up to bury the slain after he had smitten every male in Edom 16 For six moneths did Joab remain there with all Israel until he had cut off every male in Edom 17 That Hadad fled he and certain Edomites of his fathers servants with him to go into Egypt Hadad being yet a little childe 18 And they arose out of Midian and came to Paran and they took men with them out of Paran and they came to Egypt unto Pharaoh king of Egypt which gave him an house and appointed him victuals and gave him land 19 And Hadad found great favour in the sight of Pharaoh so that he gave him to wife the sister of his own wife the sister of Tahpenes the queen 20 And the sister of Tahpenes bare him Genubath his son whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaohs house and Genubath was in Pharaohs houshold among the sons of Pharaoh 21 And when Hadad heard in Egypt that David slept with his fathers and that Joab the captain of the host was dead Hadad said to Pharaoh †Heb. Send me away Let me depart that I may go to mine own countrey 22 Then Pharaoh said unto him But what hast thou lacked with me that behold thou seekest to go to thine own countrey And he answered †Heb. Not. Nothing howbeit let me go in any wise 23 ¶ And God stirred him up another adversary Rezon the son of Eliadah which fled from his lord Hadadezer king of Zobah 24 And he gathered men unto him and became captain over a band * 2 Sam. 8.3 10.18 when David slew them of Zobah and they went to Damascus and dwelt therein and reigned in Damascus 25 And he was an adversary to Israel all the days of Solomon beside the mischief that Hadad did and he abhorred Israel and reigned over Syria 26 ¶ And * 2 Chr. 13.6 Jeroboam the son of Nebat an Ephrathite of Zereda Solomons servant whose mothers name was Zeruiah a widow woman even he lift up his hand against the king 27 And this was the cause that he lift up his hand against the king Solomon built Millo and †Heb. â—losed repaired the breaches of the city of David his father 28 And the man Jeroboam was a mighty man of valour and Solomon seeing the young man that he †Heb. did work was industrious he made him ruler over all the †Heb. burden charge of the house of Joseph 29 And it came to pass at that time when Jeroboam went out of Jerusalem that the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite found him in the way and he had clad himself with a new garment and they two were alone in the fieâ—d 30 And Ahijah caught the new garment that was on him and rent it in twelve pieces 31 And he said to Jeroboam Take thee ten pieces for thus saith the LORD the God of Israel Behold I will rend the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon and will give ten tribes to thee 32 But he shall have one tribe for my servant Davids sake and for Jerusalems sake the city which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel 33 Because that they have forsaken me and have worshipped Ashtoreth the goddess of the Zidoniaâ—s Chemoâ—h the god of the Moabites and Milcom the god of the children of Ammon and have not walked in my ways to do that which is right in mine eyes and to keep my statutes and my judgements as did David his father 34 Howbeit I will not take the whole kingdom out of his hand but I will make him prince all the days of his life for David my servants sake whom I chose because he kept my commandments and my statutes 35 But * Chap. 12.15 I will take the kingdom out of his sons hand and will give it unto thee even ten tribes 36 And unto his son will I give one tribe that David my servant may have a †Heb. â—amp or â—â—â—dle light alway before me in Jerusalem the city which I have chosen me to put my name tâ—ere 37 And I will take thee and thou shalt reign according to all that thy soul desireth and shalt be king over Israel 38 And it shall be it thou wilt hearken unto all that I command thee and wilt walk in my ways and do that is right in my sight to keep my statutes and my commandments as David my servant did that I will be with thee and build thee a sure house as I built for David and will give Israel unto thee 39 And I will for this afflict the seed of David but not for ever 40 Solomon sought therefore to kill Jeroboam and Jerâ—â—oam arose and fled into Egypt unto Shishak king of Egypt and was in Egypt until the death of Solomon 41 ¶ And the rest of the ‖ Or words or things acts of Solomon and all that he did and his wisdom are they not written in the book of the acts of

thee with †Heb. haâ—d heaâ—ie tidings 7 Go tell Jeroboam thus saith the LORD God of Israel Forasmuch as I exalted thee from among the people and made thee prince over my people Israel 8 And rent the kingdom away from the house of David and gave it thee and yet thou hast not been as my servant David who kept my commandments and who followed me with all his heart to do that onely which was right in mine eyes 9 But hast done evil above all that were before thee for thou hast gone and made thee other gods and molten images to provoke me to anger and hast cast me behinde thy back 10 Therefore good land which he gave to their fathers and shall scatter them beyond the river because they have made their groves provoking the LORD to anger 16 And he shall give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam who did sin and who made Israel to sin 17 ¶ And Jeroboams wife arose and departed and came to Tirzah and when she came to the threshold of the door the childe died 18 And they buried him and all Israel mourned for him according to the word of the LORD which he spake by the hand of his servant Ahijah the prophet 19 And the rest of the acts of Jeroboam how he warred and how he reigned behold they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 20 And the days which Jeroboam reigned were two and twenty years and he †Heb. lay dowâ— slept with his fathers and Nadab his son reigned in his stead 21 ¶ And Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah * 2 Chr. 12.13 Rehoboam was fourty and one years old when he began to reign and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem the city which the LORD did choose out of all the tribes of Israel to put his name there and his mothers name was Naamah an Ammonitess 22 And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD and they provoked him to jealousie with their sins which they had committed above all that their fathers had done 23 For they also built them high places and ‖ Or standing images or statues images and groves on every high hill and under every green tree 24 And there were also sodomites in the land and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel 25 ¶ And it came to pass in the fifth year of king Rehoboam that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem 26 And he took away the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of XV. 1 Abijams wicked reign 7 Asa succeedeth him 9 Asa's good reign 16 The war between Baasha and him causeth him to make a league with Benhadad 23 Jehoshaphat succeedeth Asa 25 Nadabs wicked reign 27 Baasha conspirinâ— against him executeth Abijahs prophesie 31 Nadabs acts and death 33 Baasha's wicked reign NOw in the eighteenth year of king * 2 Chr. 13.1 Jeroboam the son of Nebat reigned Abijam over Judah 2 Three years reigned he in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Maachah the daughter of Abishalom 3 And he walked in all the sins of his father which he

Asa his son reigned in his stead 9 ¶ And in the twentieth year of Jeroboam king of Israel reigned Asa over Judah 10 And fourty and one years reigned he in Jerusalem and his ‖ That is grand-mothers mothers name was Maachah the daughter of Abishalom 11 And Asa did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD as did David his father 12 And he took away the sodomites out of the land and removed all the idols that his fathers had made 13 And also * 2 Chr. 15.16 Maachah his mother even her he removed from being queen because she had made an idol in a grove and Asa †Heb. cut of destroyed her idol and burnt it by the brook Kidron 14 But the high places were not removed nevertheless Asa his heart was perfect with the LORD all his days 15 And he brought in the †Heb. holy things which his father had dedicated and the things which himself had dedicated into the house of the LORD silver and gold and vessels 16 ¶ And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days 17 And * 2 Chr. 16.1 Baasha king of Israel went up against Judah and built Ramah that he might not suffer any to go out or come in to Asa king of Judah 18 Then Asa took all the silver and the gold that were lest in the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the kings house and delivered them into the hand of his servants and king Asa sent them to * 2 Chr. 16.2 Ben-hadad the son of Tabrimon the son of Hezion king of Syria that dwelt at Damascus saying 19 There is a league between me and thee and between my father and thy father behold I have sent unto thee a present of silver and gold come and break thy league with Baasha king of Israel that he may †Heb. go up depart from me 20 So Ben-hadad hearkned unto king Asa and sent the captains of the hosts which he had against the cities of Israel and smote ljon and Dan and Abel-beth-maachah and all Cinneroth with all the land of Naphtali 21 And it came to pass when Baasha heard thereof that he left off building of Ramah and dwelt in Tirzah 22 Then king Asa made a proclamation throughout all Judah none was †Heb. â—ree exempted and they took away the stones of Ramah and the timber thereof wherewith Baasha had builded and king Asa built with them Geba of Benjamin and Mizpah 23 The rest of all the acts of Asa and all his might and all that he did and the cities which he built are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah Nevertheless in the time of his old age he was diseased in his feet 24 And Asa slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father and * Mat. 1.8 called Josaphat Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his stead 25 ¶ And Nadab the son of Jeroboam †Heb. reigned began to reign over Israel in the second year of Asa king of Judah and reigned over Israel two years 26 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and walked in the way of his father and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin 27 ¶ And Baasha the son of Ahijah of the house of Issachar conspired against him and Baasha smote him at Gibbethon which belongeth to the Philistines for Nadab and all Israel laid siege to Gibbethon 28 Even in the third year of Asa king of Judah did Baasha slay him and reigned in his stead 29 And it came to pass when he reigned that he smote all the house of Jeroboam he left not to Jeroboam any that breathed until he had destroyed him according unto * Chap. 〈◊〉 the saying of the LORD which he spake by his servant Ahijah the Shilonite 30 Because of the sins of Jeroboam which he sinned and which he made Israel sin by his provocation wherewith he provoked the LORD God of Israel to anger 31 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Nadab and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 32 And there was war between Asa and Baasha king of Israel all their days 33 In the third year of Asa king of Judah began Baasha the son of Ahijah to reign over all Israel in Tirzah twenty and four years 34 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and walked in the way of Jeroboam and in his sin wherewith he made Israel to sin CHAP. manner and another said on that manner 21 And there came forth a spirit and stood before the LORD and said I will perswade him 22 And the LORD said unto him Wherewith And he said I will go forth I will be a lying spirit in the mouth of all his prophets And he said Thou shalt perswade him and prevail also go forth and do so 23 Now therefore behold the LORD hath put a lying spirit in the mouth of all these thy prophets and the LORD hath spoken evil concerning thee 24 But Zedekiah the son of Chenaanah went near and smote Micaiah on the cheek and said * 2 Chr. 18.23 Which way went the spirit of the LORD from me to speak unto thee 25 And Micaiah said Behold thou shalt see in that day when thou shalt go ‖ Or from chamber to chamber into †Heb. a chamber in a chamber an inner chamber to hide thy of you 29 So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat the king of Judah went up to Ramoth-gilead 30 And the king of Israel said unto Jehoshaphat ‖ Or when he was to disguise himself and enter into the battel I will disguise my self and enter into the battel but put thou on thy robes And the king of Israel disguised himself and went into the battel 31 But the king of Syria commanded his thirty and two captains that had rule over his chariots saying Fight neither with small nor great save onely with the king of Israel 32 And it came to pass when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat that they said Surely it is the king of Israel And they turned aside to fight against him and Jehoshaphat cried out 33 And it came to pass when the captains of the chariots perceived that it was not the king of Israel that they turned back from pursuing him 34 And a certain man drew a bowe †Heb. in his simplicity at a venture and smote the king of Israel between the †Heb. joynts and the breast-plate joynts of the harness wherefore he said unto the driver of his chariot Turn thine hand and carry me out of the host for I am †Heb. made sick wounded 35 And the battel †Heb. ascended increased that day and the king was stayed up in his chariot against the Syrians and died at even and the bloud ran out of the wound into the †Heb. bosom midst of the chariot 36 And there went a proclamation throughout the host about the going down of the sun saying Every man to his city and every man to his own countrey 37 ¶ So the king died and †Heb. came was brought to Samaria and they buried the king in Samaria 38 And one washed the chariot in the pool of Samaria and the dogs licked up his bloud and they washed his armour according * Chap. 21.19 unto the word of the LORD which he spake 39 Now the rest of the fathers and Ahaziah his son reigned in his stead 41 ¶ And * 2 Chr. 20.31 Jehoshaphat the son of Asa began to reign over Judah in the fourth year of Ahab king of Israel 42 Jehoshaphat was thirty and five years old when he began to reign and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi 43 And he walked in all the way of Asa his father he turned not aside from it doing that which was right in the eyes of the LORD nevertheless the high places were not taken away for the people offered and burnt incense yet in the high places 44 And of Judah 46 And the remnant of the sodomites which remained in the days of his father Asa he took out of the land 47 There was then no king in Edom a deputy was king 48 Jehoshaphat ‖ Or had ten ships made ships of Tharshish to go to Ophir for gold but they went not for the ships were broken at Ezion-geber 49 Then said Ahaziah the son of Ahab unto Jehoshaphat Let my servants go with thy servants in the ships but Jehoshaphat would not 50 ¶ And Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father and Jehoram his son reigned in his stead 51 ¶ Ahaziah the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah and reigned two years over Israel 52 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and walked in the way of his father and in the way of his mother and in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin 53 For he served Baal and worshipped him and provoked to anger the LORD God of Israel according to all that his father had done ¶ The second book of the KINGS commonly called The fourth book of the KINGS CHAP. I. 1 Moab rebelleth 2 Ahaziah sending to Baal-zebub hath his judgement by Elijah 5 Elijah twice bringeth fire from heaven upon them whom Abaziah sent to apprehend him 13 He pitieth the third captain and encouraged by an angel telleth the king of his death 17 Jehoram succeedeth Ahaziah THen Moab rebelled against Israel * Chap. 3.5 after the death of Ahab 2 And Ahaziah fell down through a lattess in his upper chamber that was in Samaria and was sick and he sent messengers and said unto them Go enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease 3 But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite Arise go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and say unto them Is it not because there is not a God in Israel that ye go to enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron 4 Now therefore thus saith the LORD †Heb. The bed whither thou art goen up thou shalt not come down from it Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up but shalt surely die And Elijah departed 5 ¶ And when the messengers turned back unto him he said unto them
Why are ye now turned back 6 And they said unto him There came a man up to meet us and said unto us Go turn again unto the king that sent you and say unto him Thus saith the LORD Is it not because there is not a God in Israel that thou sendest to enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron therefore thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up but shalt surely die 7 And he said unto them †Heb. What was the manner of the man What manner of man was he which came up to meet you and told you these words 8 And they answered him He was an hairy man and girt with a girdle of leather about his loyns And he said It is Elijah the Tishbite 9 Then the king sent unto him a captain of fifty with his fifty and and he went up to him and behold he sat on the top of an hill and he spake unto him Thou man of God the king hath said Come down 10 And Elijah answered and said to the captain of fifty If I be a man of God then let fire come down from heaven and consume thee and thy fifty And there came down fire from heaven and consumed him and his fifty 11 Again also he sent unto him another captain of fifty with his fifty and he answered and said unto him O man of God thus hath the king said Come down quickly 12 And Elijah answered and said unto them If I be a man of God let fire come down from heaven consume thee and thy fifty And the fire of God came down from heaven and consumed him and his fifty 13 ¶ And he sent again a captain of the third fifty with his fifty and the third captain of fifty went up and came and †Heb. tâ—â—â—ed fell on his knees before Elijah and besought him and said unto him O man of God I pray thee let my life and the life of these fifty thy servants be precious in thy sight 14 Behold there came fire down from heaven and burnt up the two captains of the former fifties with their fifties therefore let my life now be precious in thy sight 15 And the angel of the LORD said unto Elijah Go down with him be not afraid of him And he arose and went down with him unto the king 16 And he said unto him Thus saith the LORD Forasmuch as thou hast sent messengers to enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron is it not because there is no God in Israel to enquire of his word therefore thou shalt not come down off that bed on which thou art gone up but shalt surely die 17 ¶ So he died according to the word of the LORD which Elijah had spoken and Jehoram reigned in his stead in the second year of Jehoram the son of Jehoshaphat king of Judah because he had no son 18 Now the rest of the acts of Ahaziah which he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel CHAP. II. 1 Elijah taking his leave of Elisha with his mantle divideth Jordan 9 and granting Elisha his request is taken up by a fiery chariot into heaven 12 Elisha dividing Jordan with Elijahs mantle is as knowledged his successour 16 The young prophets hardly obtaining leave to seek Elijah could not finde him 19 Elisha with salt healeth the unwholesome waters 23 Bears destroy the children that mocked Elisha ANd it came to pass when the LORD would take up Elijah into heaven by a whirlwind that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal 2 And Elijah said unto Elisha Tarry here I pray thee for the LORD hath sent me to Beth-el And Elisha said unto him As the LORD liveth and as thy soul liveth I will not leave thee So they went down to Beth-el 3 And the sons of the prophets that were at Beth-el came forth to Elisha and said unto him Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day And he said Yea I know it hold you your peace 4 And Elijah said unto him Elisha tarry here I pray thee for the LORD hath sent me to Jericho And he said As the LORD liveth and as thy soul liveth I will not leave thee So they came to Jericho 5 And the sons of the prophets that were at Jericho came to Elisha and said unto him Knowest thou that the LORD will take away thy master from thy head to day And he answered Yea I know it hold you your peace 6 And Elijah said unto him Tarry I pray thee here for the LORD hath sent me to Jordan And he said As the LORD liveth and as thy soul liveth I will not leave thee And they two went on 7 And fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood †Heb. in sight or over against to view afar off and they two stood by Jordan 8 And Elijah took his mantle and wrapt it together and smote the waters and they were divided hither and thither so that they two went over on dry ground 9 ¶ And it came to pass when they were gone over that Elijah said unto Elisha Ask what I shall do for thee before I be taken away from thee And Elisha said I pray thee let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me 10 And he said †Heb. Thou hast done hard in asking Thou hast asked a hard thing nevertheless if thou see me when I am taken from thee it shall be so unto thee but if not it shall not be so 11 And it came to pass as they still went on and talked that behold there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire and parted them both asunder and * Ecclus 48.9 1 Mac. 2.58 Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven 12 ¶ And Elisha saw it and he cried * Chap. 13.14 My father my father the chariot of Israel and the hors-men thereof And he saw him no more and he took hold of his own clothes and rent them in two pieces 13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and went back and stood by the †Heb. lip bank of Jordan 14 And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and smote the waters and said Where is the LORD God of Elijah and when he also had smitten the waters they parted hither and thither and Elisha went over 15 And when the sons of the prophets which were * verse 7. to view at Jericho saw him they said The spirit of Elijah doth rest on Elisha And they came to meet him bowed themselves to the ground before him 16 ¶ And they said unto him Behold now there be with thy servants fifty †Heb. sons of strength strong men let them go we pray thee and seek thy master lest peradventure the spirit of the LORD hath taken him up and cast him upon †Heb. one of the mountains some
to the workmen and repaired therewith the house of the LORD 15 Moreover they reckoned not with the men into whose hand they delivered the money to be bestowed on workmen for they dealt faithfully 16 The trespass-money and sin-money was not brought into the house of the LORD it was the priests 17 ¶ Then Hazael king of Syria went up and fought against Gath and took it and Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem 18 And Jehoash king of Judah took all the hallowed things that Jehoshaphat and Jehoram and Ahaziah his fathers kings of Judah had dedicate and his own hallowed things and all the gold that was found in the treasures of the house of the LORD and in the kings house and sent it to Hazael king of Syria and he †Heb. went up went away from Jerusalem 19 ¶ And the rest of the acts of Joash and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 20 And his servants arose and made 2 conspiracy and slew Joash in ‖ Or Betl-millo the house of Millo which goeth down to Silla 21 For Jozachar the son of Shimeath and Jehuzahad the son of Shomer his servants smote him and he died and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XIII 1 Jehoahaz his wicked reign 3 Jehoahaz oppressed by Hazael is relieved by prayer 8 Joash succeedeth him 10 His wicked reign 12 Jeroboam succeedeth him 14 Elisha dying prophesieth to Joash three victories over the Syrians 20 The Moabites invading the land Elisha's bones raise up a dead man 22 Hazael dying Joash getteth three victories over Ben-hadad IN †Heb. the twentieth year and third year the three and twentieth year of Joash the son of Ahaziah king of Judah Jehoahaz the son of Jehu began to reign over Israel in Samaria and reigned seventeen years 2 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD and †Heb. walked after followed the sins of Jerohoam the son of Nebat which made Israel to sin he departed not therefrom 3 ¶ And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel and he delivered them into the hand of Hazael king of Syria and into the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael all their days 4 And Jehoahaz besought the LORD and the LORD hearkned unto him for he saw the oppression of Israel because the king of Syria oppressed them 5 And the LORD gave Israel a saviour so that they went out from under the hand of the Syrians and the children of Israel dwelt in their tents †Heb. aâ— yesterday and third day as before time 6 Nevertheless they departed not from the sins of the house of Jeroboam who made Israel sin but †Heb. be walked walked therein and there †Heb. stood remained the grove also in Samaria 7 Neither did he leave of the people to Jehoahaz but fifty hors-men and ten chariots and ten thousand footmen for the king of Syria had destroyed them and had made them like the dust by threshing 8 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jehoahaz and all that he did and his might are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 9 And Jehoahaz slept with his fathers and they buried him in Samaria and Joash his son reigned in his stead 10 ¶ In the thirty and seventh year of Joash king of Judah began Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz to reign over Israel in Samaria and reigned sixteen year 11 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel sin but he walked therein 12 And the rest of the acts of Joash and all that he did and his might wherewith he sought against Amaziah king of Judah are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 13 And Joash slept with his fathers Jeroboam sat upon his throne and Joash was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel 14 ¶ Now Elisha was tain sick of his sickness whereof he died and Joash the king of Israel came down unto him and wept over his face and said O my father my father the chariot of Israel and the hors-men thereof 15 And Elisha said unto him Take bowe and arrows and he took unto him bowe and arrows 16 And he said to the king of Israel †Heb. Make thine land to ride Put thine hand upon the bowe and he put his hand upon it and Elisha put his hands upon the kings hands 17 And he said Open the window east-ward and he opened it Then Elisha said Shoot and he shot And he said The arrow of the LORDs deliverance and the arrow of deliverance from Syria for thou shalt smite the Syrians in Aphek till thou have consumed them 18 And he said Take the arrows and he took them And he said unto the king of Israel Smite upon the ground and he smote thrice and stayed 19 And the man of God was wroth with him and said Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice 20 ¶ And Elisha died and they buried him and the bands of the Moabites invaded the land at the coming in of the year 21 And it came to pass as they were burying a man that behold they spied a band of men and they cast the man into the sepulchre of Elisha and when the man †Heb. went down was let down and touched the bones of Elisha * Ecclus 48.14 he revived and stood up on his feet 22 ¶ But Hazael king of Syria oppressed Israel all the days of Jehoahaz 23 And the LORD was gracious unto them and had compassion on them and had respect unto them because of his covenant with Abraham Isaac and Jacob and would not destroy them neither cast he them from his †Heb. fâ—â—t presence as yet 24 So Hazael king of Syria died and Ben-hadad his son reigned in his stead 25 And Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz †Heb. râ—turned and took took again out of the hand of Ben-hadad the son of Hazael the cities which he had taken out of the hand of Jehoahaz his father by war three times did Joash beat him and recovered the cities of Israel CHAP. he began to reign and reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem 3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD yet not like David his father he did according to all things as Joash his father did 4 Howbeit the high places were not taken away as yet the people did sacrifice and burnt incense on the high places 5 ¶ And it came to pass assoon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand that he slew his servants * Chap. 12.20 which had slain the king his father 6 But the children of the murderers he slew not according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses wherein the LORD commanded saying * Deut. 24.16 Ezek. 18.20 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children nor the children be put to death for the fathers but every man shall be put to death for his own sin 7 He slew of Edom in the valley of salt ten thousand and took ‖ Ot the rock Selah by war and called the name of it Joktheel unto this day 8 ¶ Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu king of Israel saying Come let us look one another in the face 9 And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah saying The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon saying Give thy daughter to my son to wife and there passed by a wilde beast that was in Lebanon and trod down the thistle 10 Thou hast indeed smitten Edom and thine heart hath listed thee up glory of this and tarry †Heb. at thy house at home for why shouldest thou meddle to thy hurt that thou shouldest fall even thou and Judah with thee 11 But Amaziah would not hear therefore Jehoash king of Israel went up and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth-shemesh which belongeth to Judah 12 And Judah †Heb. was smitten was put to the worse before Israel and they fled every man to their tents 13 And Jehoash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah the son of Jehoash the son of Ahaziah at Beth-shemesh and came to Jerusalem and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner-gate four hundred cubits 14 And he took all the gold and silver and all the vessels that were found in the house of the LORD and in the treasures of the kings house and hostages and returned to Samaria 15 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash which he did and his might and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 16 And Jehoash slept with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel and Jeroboam his son reigned in his stead 17 ¶ And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years 18 And the rest of the acts of Amaziah are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 19 Now * 2 Chr 25.27 they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem and he fled to Lachish but they sent after him to Lachish and slew him there 20 And they brought him on horses and he was buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David 21 ¶ And all the people of Judah took †2 Chr. 26.1 he iâ— called Vzziah Azariah which â—â—as sixteen years old and made him king in stead of his father Amaziah 22 He built Elath and restored it to Judah after that the king slept with his fathers 23 ¶ In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel began to reign in Samaria and reigned fourty and one years 24 And he did that which was evil in the fight of the LORD he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin 25 He restored the coast of Israel from the entring of Hamath unto the sea of the plain according to the word of the LORD God of Israel which he spake by the hand of his servant * Mat. 12.39 40 called Jonas Jonan the son of Amittai the prophet which was of Gath-hepher 26 For the LORD saw the affliction of Israel that it was very bitter for there was not any shut up nor any lest nor any helper for Israel 27 And the LORD said not that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash 28 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam and all that he did and his might how he warred and how he recovered Damascus and Hamath which belonged to Judah for Israel are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 29 And Jeroboam slept with his fathers even with the kings of Israel and Zachariah his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XV. 1 Azariah his good reign 5 He dying a leper Jotham succeedeth 8 Zachariah the last of Jehu his generation reigning ill is slain by Shallum 13 Shallum reigning a moneth is slain by Menahem 16 Menahem strengthneth himself by Pul. 21 Pekahiah succeedeth him 23 Pekahiah is slain by Pekah 27 Pekah is oppressed by Tiglath-pileser and slain by Hoshea 32 Jothams good reign 36 Ahaz succeedeth him IN the twenty and seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel began Azariah son of Amaziah king of Judah to reign 2 Sixteen years old was he when he began to reign and he reigned two and fifty years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jecholiah of Jerusalem 3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD according to all that his father Amaziah had done 4 Save that the high places were not removed the people sacrificed and burnt incense still on the high places 5 ¶ And the LORD smote the king so that he was a leper unto the day of his death and dwelt in a several house and Jotham the kings son was over the house judging the people of the land 6 And the rest of the acts of Azariah and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 7 So Azariah slept with his fathers and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David and Jotham his son reigned in his stead 8 ¶ In the thirty and eighth year of Azariah king of Judah did Zachariah the son of Jeroboam reign over Israel in Samaria six moneths 9 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD as his fathers had done he departed not from the fins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat Who made Israel to sin 10 And Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired
against him and smote him before the people and slew him and reigned in his stead 11 And the rest of the acts of Zachariah behold they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 12 This was * Chap. 10.30 the word of the LORD which he spake unto Jehu saying Thy sons shall sit on the throne of Israel unto the fourth generation And so it came to pass 13 ¶ Shallum the son of Jabesh began to reign in the nine and thirtieth year of * Mat. 1.8 9 called Ozias Uzziah king of Judah and he reigned †Heb. a moneth of days a full moneth in Samaria 14 For Menahem the son of Gadi went up from Tirzah and came to Samaria and smote Shallum the son of Jabesh in Samaria and slew him and reigned in his stead 15 And the rest of the acts of Shallum and his conspiracy which he made behold they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 16 ¶ Then Menahem smote Tiphsah and all that were therein and the coasts thereof from Tirzah because they opened not to him therefore he smote it and all the women therein that were with childe he ript up 17 In the nine and thirtieth year of Azariah king of Judah began Menahem the son of Gadi to reign over Israel and reigned ten years in Samaria 18 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD he departed not all his days from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin 19 And * 1 Chr 5.26 Pul the king of Assyria came against the land and Menahem gave Pul a thousand talents of silver that his hand might be with him to confirm the kingdom in his hand 20 And Menahem †Heb. caused to come forth exacted the money of Israel even of all the mighty men of wealth of each man fifty shekels of silver to give to the king of Assyria so the king of Assyria turned back and stayed not there in the land 21 ¶ And the rest of the acts of Menahem and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 22 And Menahem slept with his fathers and Pekahiah his son reigned in his stead 23 ¶ In the fiftâ—eth year of Azariah king of Judah Pekahiah the son or Menahem began to reign over Israel in Samaria and reigned two years 24 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin 25 But Pekah the son of Remaliah a captain of his conspired against him and smote him in Samaria in the palace of the kings house with Argob and Arieh and with him fifty men of the Gileadites and the killed him and reigned in his room 26 And the rest of the act of Pekahiah and all that he did behold they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 27 ¶ In the two and fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah Pekah the son of Remaliah began to reign over Israel in Samaria and reigned twenty years 28 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin 29 In the days of Pekah king of Israel came Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria and took ljon and Abel-beth-maachah and Janoah and Kedesh and Hazor and Gilead and Galilee all the land of Naphtali and carried them captive to Assyria 30 And Hoshea the son of Elah made a conspiracy against Pekah the son of Remaliah and smote him and slew him and reigned in his stead in the twentieth year of Jotham the son of Uzziah 31 And the rest of the acts of Pekah and all that he did behold they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 32 ¶ In the second year of Pekah the son of Remaliah king of Israel began * 2 Chr. 27.1 Jotham the son of Uzziah king of Judah to reign 33 Five and twenty years old was he when he began to reign and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jerusha the daughter of Zadok 34 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD he did according to all that his father Uzziah had done 35 ¶ Howbeit the high places were not removed the people sacrificed and burnt incense still in the high places he built the higher gate of the house of the LORD 36 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jotham and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 37 In those days the LORD began to send against Judah Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah 38 And Jotham slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father and Ahaz his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XVI 1 Ahaz his wicked reign 5 Ahaz assailed by Rezin and Pekah hireth Tiglath-pileser against them 10 Ahaz sending a pattern of an altar from Damascus to Vrijah diverteth the brasen altar to his own devotion 17 He spoileth the temple 19 Hezekiah succeedeth him IN * 2 Chr. 28.1 the seventeenth year of Pekah the son of Remaliah Ahaz the son of Jotham king of Judah began to reign 2 Twenty years old was Ahaz when he began to reign and reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem and did not that which was right in the sight of the LORD his God like David his father 3 But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel yea and made his son to pass through the fire according to the abominations of the heathen whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel 4 And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places and on the hills and under every green tree 5 ¶ * Isaiah 7.1 Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to war and they besieged Ahaz but could not overcome him 6 At that time Rezin king of Syria recovered Elath to Syria and drave the Jews from Elath and the Syrians came to Elath and dwelt there unto this day 7 So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria saying I am thy servant and thy son come up and save me out of the hand of the king of Syria and out of the hand of the king of Israel which rise up against me 8 And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was sound in the house of the LORD and in the treasures of the kings house and sent it for a present to the king of Assyria 9 And the king of Assyria hearkned unto him for the king of Assyria went up against †Heb. Dammeek Damascus and took it and carried the people of it captive to Kir and slew Rezin 10
¶ And king Ahaz went to Damascus to meet Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria and saw an altar that was at Damascus and king Ahaz sent to Urijah the priest the fashion of the altar and the pattern of it according to all the workmanship thereof 11 And Urijah the priest built an altar according to all that king Ahaz had sent from Damascus so Urijah the priest made it against king Ahaz came from Damascus 12 And when the king was come from Damascus the king saw the altar and the king approached to the altar and offered thereon 13 And he burnt his burnt-offering and his meat-offering and poured his drink-offering and sprinkled the bloud of †Heb. which were his his peace-offerings upon the altar 14 And he brought also the brasen altar which was before the LORD from the forefront of the house from between the altar and the house of the LORD and put it on the north-side of the altar 15 And king Ahaz commanded Urijah the priest saying Upon the great altar burn the morning burnt-offering and the evening meat-offering and the kings burnt-sacrifice and his meat-offering with the burnt-offering of all the people of the land and their meat-offering and their dring-offerings and sprinkle upon it all the bloud of the burnt-offering and all the bloud of the sacrifice and the brasen altar shall be for me to enquire by 16 Thus did Urijah the priest according to all that king Ahaz commanded 17 ¶ And king Ahaz cut off the borders of the bases and removed the laver from off them and took down the sea from off the brasen oxen that were under it and put it upon a pavement of stones 18 And the covert for the sabbath that they had built in the house and the kings entry without turned he from the house of the LORD for the king of Assyria 19 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Ahaz which he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 20 And Ahaz slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XVII 1 Hoshea his wicked reign 3 Being subdued by Shalmaneser he conspireth against him with So king of Egypt 5 Samaria for their sins is captivated 24 The strange nations which were transplanted in Samaria being plagued with lions make a mixture of religions IN the twelfth year of Ahaz king of Judah began Hoshea the son of Elah to reign in Samaria over Israel nine years 2 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD but not as the kings of Israel that were before him 3 ¶ Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria and Hoshea became his servant and †Heb. rendres gave him a presents 4 And the king of Assyria found conspiracy in Hoshea for he had sent messengers to So king of Egypt ‖ Or tribute and brought no present to the king of Assyria as he had done year by year therefore the king of Assyria shut him up and bound him in prison 5 ¶ Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land and went up to Samaria and besieged it three years 6 ¶ * Chap. 18.10 In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria and carried Israel away into Assyria and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan and in the cities of the Medes 7 For so it was that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Paraoh king of Egypt and had feared other gods 8 And walked in the statutes of the heathen whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel and of the kings of Israel which they had made 9 And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the LORD their God and they built them high places in all their cities from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city 10 And they set them up †Heb. statute images and groves in every high hill and under every green tree 11 And there they burnt incense in all the high places as did the heathen whom the LORD carried away before them and wrought wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger 12 For they served idols whereof the LORD had said unto them * Deut. 4.10 Ye shall not do this thing 13 Yet the LORD testified against Israel and against Judah †Heb. be the hand of all by all the prophets and by all the seers saying * Jer. 18.11 and 25.5 and 35.15 Turn ye from your evil ways and keep my commandments and my statutes according to all the law which I commanded your fathers and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets 14 Notwithstanding they would not hear but * Deut. 31.27 hardened their necks like to the neck of their fathers that did not beleeve in the LORD their God 15 And they rejected his statutes and his covenant that he made with their fathers and his testimonies which he testified against them and they followed vanity and became vain and went after the heathen that were round about them concerning whom the LORD had charged them that they should not do like them 16 And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God and * Exod. 32.8 1 King 12.28 made them molten images even two calves and made a grove and worshipped all the host of heaven and served Baal 17 And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire and used divination and enchantments and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD to provoke him to anger 18 Therefore the LORD was very angry with Israel and removed them out of his sight there was none left but the tribe of Judah onely 19 Also Judah kept not the commandments of the LORD their God but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made 20 And the LORD rejected all the seed of Israel and afflicted them and delivered them into the hand of spoilers until he had cast them out of his sight 21 For the rent Israel from the house of David and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king and Jeroboam drave Israel from following the LORD and made them sin a great sin 22 For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did they departed not from them 23 Until the LORD removed Israel out of his sight as he had said by all his servants the prophets So was Israel carried away out of their own land to Assyria unto this day 24 ¶ And the king of Assyria brought men from Babylon and from Cuthah and from Ava and from Hamath and from Sepharvaim and placed them in the cities of Samaria in stead of the children of Israel and they possessed Samaria and dwelt

XXI 1 Manasseh his reign 3 His great idolatry 10 His wickedness causeth prophesies against Judah 17 Amon succeedeth him 19 Amons wicked reign 23 He being slain by his servants and those murderers slain by the people Josiah is made king MAnasseh * 2 Chr. 33.1 was twelve years old when he began to reign and reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Hephzi-bah 2 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD after the abominations of the heathen whom the LORD cast out before the children of Israel 3 For he built up again the high places * Chap. 18.4 which Hezekiah his father had destroyed and he reared up altars for Baal and made a grove as did Ahab king of Israel and worshipped all the host of heaven and served them 4 And * Jer 3â— 34 he built altars in the house of the LORD of which the LORD said * 2 Sam. 7.13 In Jerusalem will I put my name 5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD 6 And he made his son pass through the fire and observed times and used enchantments and dealt with familiar spirits and wizards he wrought much wickedness in the sight of the LORD to provoke him to anger 7 And he set a graven image of the grove that he had made in the house or which the LORD said to David and to Solomon his son * 1 King 8.29 and 9.3 Chap. 23.27 In this house and in Jerusalem which I have chosen out of all tribes of Israel will I put my name for ever 8 Neither will I make the feet of Israel move any more out of the land which I gave their fathers onely if they will observe to do according to all that I have commanded them and according to all the law that my servant Moses commanded them 9 But they hearkned not and Manasseh seduced them to do more evil then did the nations whom the LORD destroyed before the children of Israel 10 ¶ And the LORD spake by his servants the prophets saying 11 * Jeâ—em 15.4 Because Manasseh king of Judah hath done these abominations and hath done wickedly above all that the Amorites did which were before him and hath made Judah also to sin with his idols 12 Therefore thus saith the LORD God of Israel Behold I am bringing such evil upon Jerusalem and Judah that whosoever heareth of it both * 1 Sam. 3.11 his ears shall tingle 13 And I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria and the plummet of the house of Ahab and I will wipe Jerulalem as a man wipeth a dish †Heb. be wipâ—th and turneth it upon the face thereof wiping it and turning it upside down 14 And I will forsake the remnant of mine inheritance and deliver them into the hand of their enemies and they shall become a prey and a spoil to all their enemies 15 Because they have done that which was evil in my sight and have provoked me to anger since the day their fathers came forth out of Egypt even unto this day 16 Moreover Manasseh shed innocent bloud very much till he had filled Jerusalem †Heb. from mouth to mouth from one end to another beside his sin wherewith he made Judah to sin in doing that which was evil in the sight of the LORD 17 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh and all that he did and his sin that he sinned are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 18 And * 2 Chr. 33. â—0 Manasseh slept with his fathers and was buried in the garden of his own house in the garden of Uzza and Amon his son reigned in his stead 19 ¶ Amon was twenty and two years old when he began to reign and he reigned two years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Meshullemeth the daughter of Haruz of Jotbah 20 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD as his father Manasseh did 21 And he walked in all the way that his father walked in and served the idols that his father served and worshipped them 22 And he forsook the LORD God of his fathers and walked not in the way of the LORD 23 ¶ And the servants of Amon conspired against him and slew the king in his own house 24 And the people of the land slew all them that had conspired against king Amon and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his stead 25 Now the rest of the acts of Amon which he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 26 And he was buried in his sepulchre in the garden of Uzzah and * Matth. 1.10

XXII 1 Josiah his good reign 3 He taketh care for the repair of the temple 8 Hilkiab having found a book of the law Josiah sendeth to Husdah to enquire of the Lord. 15 Huldah prophesiâ—th the destruction of Jerusalem but respite thereof in Josiahs time JOsiah * 2 Chr. 34.1 was eight years old when he began to reign and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD and walked in all the way of David his father and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left 3 ¶ And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah that the king sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah the son of Meshullam the scribe to the house of the LORD saying 4 Go up to Hilkiah the high priest that he may sum the silver which is brought into the house of the LORD which the keepers of the †Heb. threshold door have gathered of the people 5 And let them deliver it into the hand of the doers of the work that have the oversight of the house of the LORD and let them give it to the doers of the work which is in the house of the LORD to repair the breaches of the house 6 Unto carpenters and builders and masons and to buy timber and hewn stone to repair the house 7 Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand because they dealt faithfully 8 ¶ And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD and Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan and he read it 9 And Shaphan the scribe came to the king and brought the king word again and said Thy servants have †Heb. â—â—â—ted gathered the money that was found in the house and have delivered it into the hand of them that do the work that have the oversight of the house of the LORD 10 And Shaphan the scribe shewed the king saying Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book and Shaphan read it before the king 11 And it came to pass when the king had heard the words of the book of the law that he rent his clothes 12 And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest and Ahikam the son of Shaphan and Achbor the son of Michaiah and Shaphan the scribe and Asahiah a servant of the kings saying 13 Go ye enquire of the LORD for me and for the people and for all Judah concerning the words of this book that is found for great is the wrath of the LORD that is kindled against us because our fathers have not hearkned unto the words of this book to do according unto all that which is written concerning us 14 So Hilkiah the priest and Ahikam and Achbor and Shaphan and Asahiah went unto Huldah the prophetess the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah the son of Harhas keeper of the †Heb. â—aâ—ments wardrobe now she dwelt in Jerusalem ‖ Or in the second put in the colledge and they communed with her 15 ¶ And she said unto them Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Tell the man that sent you to me 16 Thus saith the LORD Behold I will bring evil upon this place and upon the inhabitants thereof even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read 17 Because they have forsaken me and have burnt incense unto other gods that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place and shall not be quenched 18 But to the king of Judah which sent you to enquire of the LORD thus shall ye say to him Thus saith the LORD God of Israel As touching the words which thou hast heard 19 Because thine heart was tender and thou hast humbled thy self before the LORD when thou heardest what I spake against this place and against the inhabitants thereof that they should become a desolation and a curse and hast rent thy clothes and wept before me I also have heard thee saith the LORD 20 Behold therefore I will gather thee unto thy fathers and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place And they brought the king word again CHAP. XXIII 1 Josiah causeth the book to be read in a solemn assembly 3 He reneweth the covenant of the Lord. 4 He destroyeth idolatry 15 He burneth dead mens bones upon the altar of Beth-el as was fore-prophesied 21 He keepeth a most solemn pass-over 24 He putteth away witches and all abomination 26 Gods final wrath against Judah 29 Josiah provoking Pharaoh-nechoh is slain at Megiddo 31 Jehoahaz succeeding him is imprisoned by Pharaoh-nechoh who made Jehoiakim king 36 Jehoiakim his wicked reign ANd * 2 Chron. 34.30 the king sent and they gathered unto him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem 2 And the king went up into the house of the LORD and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him and the priests and the prophets and all the people †Heb. from small 〈◊〉 unto great both small and great and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD 3 ¶ And the king stood by a pillar and made a covenant before the LORD to walk after the LORD and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book and all the people stood to the covenant 4 And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest and the priests of the second order and the keepers of the door to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal and for the grove and for all the host of heaven and he burnt them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron and carried the ashes of them unto Beth-el 5 And he †Heb. â—â—â—sed to â—â—ase put down the †Heb. â—â—â—marâ—m idolatrous priests whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah and in the places round about Jerusalem them also that burnt incense unto Baal to the sun and to the moon and to the ‖ Or twelve signâ— or constellations planets and to all the host of heaven 6 And he brought out the * Chap. 21. â— grove from the house of the LORD without Jerusalem unto the brook Kidron and burnt it at the brook Kidron and stampt it small to powder and cast the powder thereof upon the graves of the children of the people 7
And he brake down the houses of the sodomites that were by the house of the LORD where the women wove †Heb. houses hangings for the grove 8 And he brought all the priests out of the cities of â—udah and defiled the high places where the priests had burnt incense from Geba to Beer-sheba and brake down the high places of the gates that were in the entring in of the gate of Joshua the governour of the city which were on a mans left hand at the gate of the city 9 Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem but they did eat of the unleavened bread among their brethren 10 And he defiled Topheth which is in the valley of the children of Hinnom that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech 11 And he took away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun at the entring in of the house of the LORD by the chamber of Nathan-melech the ‖ Or eunuch oâ— officer chamberlain which was in the suburbs and burnt the chariots of the sun with fire 12 And the altars that were on the top of the upper chamber of Ahaz which the kings of Judah had made and the altars which * Ch. 21.5 Manasseh had made in the two courts of the house of the LORD did the king beat down and ‖ Or ran from thence brake them down from thence and cast the dust of them into the brook Kidron 13 And the high places that were before Jerusalem which were on the right hand of ‖ That is the mount of Oâ—ives the mount of corruption which * 1 Kin. 11.7 Solomon the king of Israel had builded for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Zidonians and for Chemosh the abomination of the Moabites and for Milcom the abomination of the children of Ammon did the king defile 14 And he brake in pieces the †Heb. statâ—es images and cut down the groves and filled their places with the bones of men 15 ¶ Moreover the altar that was at Beth-el and the high place which Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin had made both that altar and the high place he brake down and burnt the high place and stampt it small to powder and burnt the grove 16 And as Josiah turned himself he spied the sepulchres that were there in the mount and sent and took the bones out of the sepulchres and burnt them upon the altar and polluted it according to the * 1 Kin. 13. â— word of the LORD which the man of God proclaimed who proclaimed these words 17 Then he said What title is that that I see And the men of the city told him It is the sepulchre of the man of God which came from Judah and proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of Beth-el 18 And he said Let him alone let no man move his bones so they let his bones †Heb. to escape alone with the bones of the prophet that came out of Samaria 19 And all the houses also of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria which the kings of Israel had made to provoke the LORD to anger Josiah took away and did to them according to all the acts that he had done in Beth-el 20 And he ‖ Or sacrificed slew all the priests of the high places that were there upon the altars and burnt mens bones upon them and returned to Jerusalem 21 ¶ And the king commanded all the from the days of the judges that judged Israel nor in all the days of the kings of Israel nor of the kings of Judah 23 But in the eighteenth year of king Josiah wherein this passover was holden to the LORD in Jerusalem 24 ¶ Moreover the workers with familiar spirits and the wizards and the ‖ Or teraphim images and the idols and all the abominations that were spied in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem did Josiah put away that he might perform the words of * Levit. 20.27 Deut. 18.11 the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the LORD 25 And like unto him was there no king before him that turned to the LORD with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his might according to all the law of Moses neither after him arose there any like him 26 ¶ Notwithstanding the LORD turned not from the fierceness of his great wrath wherewith his anger was kindled against Judah because of all the †Heb. angers provocations that Manasseh had provoked him withal 27 And the LORD said I will remove Judah also out of my sight as I have removed Israel and will cast off this city Jerusalem which I have chosen and the house of which I said * 1 carried him in a chariot dead from Megiddo and brought him to Jerusalem and buried him in his own sepulchre and * 2 Chron. 36.1 the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah and anointed him and made him king in his fathers stead 31 ¶ Jehoahaz was twenty and three years old when he began to reign and he reigned three moneths in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah 32 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD according to all that his fathers had done 33 And Pharaoh-nechoh put him in hands at Riblah in the land of Hamath ‖ Or because be reigned that he might not reign in Jerusalem and †Heb. set a mulct upon the land put the land to a tribute of an hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold 34 And Pharaoh nechoh made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in the room of Josiah his father and turned his name to * Mat. 1.11 called Jakim Jehoiakim and took Jehoahaz away and he came to Egypt and died there 35 And Jehoiakim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh but he taxed the land to give the money according to the commandment of Pharaoh he exacted the silver and the gold of the people of the land of every one according to his

X. 1 The Israelites assembled at Shechem to crown Rehoboam by Jeroboam make a suit of relaxation unto him 6 Rehoboam refusing the old mens counsel by the advice of young men answereth them roughly 16 Ten tribes revolting kill Hadoram and make Rehoboam to flee ANd * 1 King 12.1 c. Rehoboam went to Shechem for to Shechem were all Israel come to make him king 2 And it came to pass when Jeroboam the son of Nebat who was in Egypt whither he had fled from the presence of Solomon the king heard it that Jeroboam returned out of Egypt 3 And they sent and called him so Jeroboam and all Israel came and spake to Rehoboam saying 4 Thy father made our yoke grievous now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father and his heavy yoke that he put upon us and we will serve thee 5 And he said unto them Come again unto me after three days And the people departed 6 ¶ And king Rehoboam took counsel with the old men that had stood before

Moses the servant of the LORD and of the congregation of Israel for the tabernacle of witness 7 For the sons of Athaliah that wicked woman had broken up the house of God and also all the dedicate things of the house of the LORD did they bestow upon Baalim 8 And at the kings commandment they made a chest and set it without at the gate of the house of the LORD 9 And they made †Heb. a voice a proclamation through Judah and Jerusalem to bring in to the LORD the collection that Moses the servant of God laid upon Israel in the wilderness 10 And all the princes and all the people rejoyced and brought in and cast into the chest until they had made an end 11 Now it came to pass that at what time the chest was brought unto the kings office by the hand of the Levites and when they saw that there was much money the kings scribe and the high priests officer came and emptied the chest and took it and carried it to his place again Thus they did day by day and gathered money in abundance 12 And the king and Jehoiada gave it to such as did the work of the service of the house of the LORD and hired masons and carpenters to repair the house of the LORD and also such as wrought iron and brass to mend the house of the LORD 13 So the workmen wrought and †Heb. the healing went upon the work the work was perfected by them and they set the house of God in his state and strengthned it 14 And when they had finished it they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada whereof were made vessels for the house of the LORD even vessels to minister and ‖ Or pesâ—â—â—s to offer withal and spoons and vessels of gold and silver and they offered burnt-offerings in the house of the LORD continually all the days of Jehoiada 15 ¶ But Jehoiada waxed old and was full of days when he died an hundred and thirty years old was he when he died 16 And they buried him in the city of David among the kings because he had done good in Israel both towards God and towards his house 17 Now after the death of Jehoiada came the princes of Judah and made obeysance to the king then the king hearkned unto them 18 And they left the house of the LORD God of their fathers and served groves and idols and wrath came upon Judah and Jerusalem for this their trespass 19 Yet he sent prophets to them to bring them again unto the LORD and they testified against them but they would not give ear 20 And the spirit of God ‡ Heb. clothed came upon Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest which stood above the people and said unto them Thus saith God Why transgress ye the commandments of the LORD that ye cannot prosper because ye have forsaken the LORD he hath also forsaken you 21 And they conspired against him and stoned him with stones at the commandment of the king in the court of the house of the LORD 22 Thus Joash the king remembred not the kindness which Jehoiada his father had done to him but slew his son and when he died he said The LORD look upon it and require it 23 ¶ And it came to pass †Heb in the revolution of the Jur. at the end of the year that the host of Syria came up against him and they came to Judah and Jerusalem and destroyed all the princes of the people from among the people and sent all the spoil of them unto the king of †Heb. Darmesek Damascus 24 For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men and the LORD delivered a very great host into their hand because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers so they executed judgement against Joain 25 And when they were departed from him for they left him in great diseases his own servants conspired against him for the bloud of the sons of Jehoiada the priest and slew him on his bed and he died and they buried him in the city of David but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings 26 And these are they that conspired against him ‖ Or Jozachar 2 King 12.21 Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess and Jehozabad the son of ‖ Or Sâ—omer Shimrith a Moabitess 27 ¶ Now concerning his sons and the greatness of the burdens laid upon him and the †Heb. sâ—unding repairing of the house behold they are written in the ‖ Or commentery story of the book of the kings And Amaziah his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XXV 1 Amaziah beginneth to reign well 3 He executeth justice on the traitours 5 Having hired an army of Israelites against the Edomites at the word of a prophet he loseth the hundred talents and dismisseth them 11 He overthroweth the Edomites 10 13 The Israelites discontented with their dismission spoil as they return home 14 Amaziah proud of his victory serveth the gods of Edom and despiseth the admonitions of the prophet 17 He provoketh Joash to his overthrow 25 His reign 27 He is slain by conspiracy AMaziah * Kin. 14.1 c. was twenty and five years old when he began to reign and he reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD but not with a perfect heart 3 ¶ Now it came to pass when the kingdom was †Heb. confirmed upon him established to him that he slew his servants that had killed the king his father 4 But he slew not their children but did as it is written in the law in the book of Moses where the LORD commanded saying * Deut. 24.16 2 Kin. 14.6 Jer. 31.30 Ezek 18.20 The fathers shall not die for the children neither shall the children die for the fathers but every man shall die for his own sin 5 ¶ Moreover Amaziah gathered Judah together and made them captains over thousands and captains over hundreds according to the houses of their fathers throughout all Judah and Benjamin and he numbred them from twenty years old and above and found them three hundred thousand choice men able to go forth to war that could handle spear and shield 6 He hired also an hundred thousand mighty men of valour out of Israel for
an hundred talents of silver 7 But there came a man of God to him saying O king let not the army of Israel go with thee for the LORD is not with Israel to wit with all the children of Ephraim 8 But if thou wilt go do it be strong for the battel God shall make thee sall before the enemy for God hath power to help and to cast down 9 And Amaziah said to the man of God But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the †Heb. cand army of Israel And the man of God answered The LORD is able to give thee much more then this 10 Then Amaziah separated them to wit the army that was come to him out of Ephraim to go †Heb. to their place home again wherefore their anger was greatly kindled against Judah and they returned home †Heb. in â—eat of anger in great anger 11 ¶ And Amaziah strengthned himself and led forth his people and went to the valley of salt and smote of the children of Seir ten thousand 12 And other ten thousand left alive did the children of Judah carry away captive brought them unto the top of the rock and cast them down from the top of the rock that they were broken all in pieces 13 ¶ But †Heb. the sons of the band the souldiers of the army which Amaziah sent back that they should not go with him to battel fell upon the cities of Judah from Samaria even unto Beth-horon and smote three thousand of them and took much spoil 14 ¶ Now it came to pass after that Amaziah was come from the slaughter of the Edomites that he brought the gods of the children of Seir and set them up to be his gods and bowed down himself before them and burned incense unto them 15 Wherefore the anger of the LORD was kindled against Amaziah and he sent unto him a prophet which said unto him Why hast thou sought after the gods of the people which could not deliver their own people out of thine hand 15 And it came to pass as he talked with him that the kine said unto him Art thou made of the kings counsel forbear why shouldest thou be imitten Then the prophet forbare and said I know that God hath †Heb. counselled determined to destroy thee because thou hast done this and hast not hearkened unto my counsel 17 ¶ Then * 2 King 14.9 Amaziah king of Judah took advice and sent to Jeash the son of Jehoahaz the son of Jehu king of Israel saying Come let us see one another in the sace 18 And Joash king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah saying The ‖ Or furâ—ush or thern thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon saying Give thy daughter to my son to wife and there passed by †Heb. a beest of the field a wilde beast that was in Lebanon and rod down the thistle 19 Thou sayest Lo thou hast smitten the Edomites and thine heart lifteth thee up to boast abide now at home why shouldest thou meddle to thine hurt that thou shouldest fall even thou and Judah with thee 20 But Amaziah would not hear for it came of God that he might deliver them into the hand of their enemies because they sought after the gods of Edom. 21 So Joash the king of Israel went up and they saw one another in the face both he and Amaziah king of Judah at Beth-shemesh which belonceth to Judah 22 And Judah was †Heb. smitten put to the worse before Israel and they fled every man to his tent 23 And Joash the king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah the son of Joash the son of Jehoahaz at Beth-shemesh and brought him to Jerusalem and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim to †Heb. the gate of it that looketh the corner-gate four hundred cubits 24 And be took all the gold and the silver and all the vessels that were found in the house of God with Obed-edom and the treasures of the kings house the hostages also and returned to Samaria 25 ¶ And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Joash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years 26 Now the rest of the acts of Amaziah first and last behold are they not written in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel 27 ¶ Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away †Heb. from after from following the LORD they †Heb. conspired a conspiracy made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem and he fled to Lachish but they sent to Lachish after him and slew him there 28 And they brought him upon horses and buried him with his fathers in the city of ‖ That is the city of David as it is 2 Kin. 14 20 Judah CHAP. XXVI 1Vzziah succeeding and reigning well in the days of Zechariah prospereth 16 Waxing proud be invadeth the priests office and is smitten with leprosie 22 He dieth and Jotham succeedeth him THen all the people of Judah took * 2 King 14.21 and 15.1 ‖ Or â—zariah Uzziah who was sixteen years old and made him king in the room of his father Amaziah 2 He built Eloth and restored it to Judah after that the king slept with his fathers 3 Sixteen years old was Uzziah when he began to reign and he reigned fifty and two years in Jerusalem his mothers name also was Jecoliah of Jerusalem 4 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD accerding to all that his father Amaziah did 5 And he sought God in the days of Zechariah who had understanding †Heb. in the seeing of God in the visions of God and as long as he sought the LORD God made him to prosper 6 And he went forth and warred against the Philistines and brake down the wall of Gath and the wall of Jabneh and the wall of Ashdod and built cities ‖ Or in the countrey of Ashdod about Ashdod and among the Philistines 7 And God helped him against the Philistines and against the Arabians that dwelt in Gur-baal and the Mehunims 8 And the Ammonites gave gifts to Uzziah and his name †Heb. went spead abroad even to the entring in of Egypt for he strenthned himself exceedingly 9 Moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the corner-gate and at the valley gate and at the turning of the wall and ‖ Or repaired fortified them 10 Also he built towers in the desert and ‖ Or cut out many cisterns digged many wells for he had much cattel both in the low-countrey and in the plains husbandmen also and vine-dressers in the mountains and in ‖ Or fruitful fields Carmel for he loved †Heb. ground husbandry 11 Moreover Uzziah had an host of fighting men that went out to war by bands according to the number
herds in abundance for God had given him substance very much 30 This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper water-course of Gihon and brought it straight down to the west-side of the city of David And Hezekiah prospered in all his works 31 ¶ Howbeit in the business of the †Heb. interpreters embassadours of the princes of Babylon who * 2 Kin. 20.12 Isa 39.1 sent unto him to enquire of the wonder that was done in the land God left him to try him that he might know all that was in his heart 32 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah and his †Heb. kindnesses goodness behold they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel 33 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers and they buried him in the ‖ Or. highest chiefest of the sepulchres of the sons of David and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XXXIII 1 Manasseh his wicked reign 3 He setteth up idolatry and wâ—ulâ— not be admonished 11 He is carried into Babylon 12Vpon his prayer to God he is released and putteth down idolatry 18 His acts 20 He dying Amon succeedeth him 21 Amon reigning wickâ—â—ly is slain by his servants 25 The murderers being slain Josiah succeedeth him MAnasseh * 2 Kin. 21.1 c. was twelve years old when he began to reign and he reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem 2 But did that which was evil in the â—iâ—â—t of the LORD like unto the * Deut. 23.9 abominations of the heathen whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel 3 ¶ For †Heb. he returned and built â—e built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had * 2 Kin. 18.4 broken down and he reared up altars for Baalim and made groves and worshipped all the host of heaven and served them 4 Also he built altars in the house of the LORD whereof the LORD had said * Deut. 12.11 1 Kin. 8.29 9.3 Chap. 6.6 and 7.16 In Jerusalem shall my name be for ever 5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD 6 And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom also he observed times and used enchantments and used witchcraft and dealt with a familiar spirit and with wizards he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD to provoke him to anger 7 And he set a carved image the idol which he had made in the house of God of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son In * Psal 132.14 this house and in Jerusalem which I have chosen before all the tribes of Israel will I put my name for ever 8 * 2 Sam. 7.10 Neither will I any more remove the foot of Israel from out of the land which I have appointed for your fathers so that they will take heed to do all that I have commanded them according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses 9 So Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err and to do worse then the heathen whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel 10 And the LORD spake to Manasseh and to his people but they would not hearken 11 ¶ Wherefore the LORD brought upon them the captains of the host †Heb. which were the kings of the king of Assyria which took Manasseh among the thorns and bound him with ‖ Or chains fetters and carried him to Babylon 12 And when he was in affliction he besought the LORD his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers 13 And prayed unto him and he was entreated of him and heard his supplication and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom Then Manasseh knew that the LORD he was God 14 Now after this he built a wall without the city of David on the west-side of Gihon in the valley even to the entring in at the fish-gate and compassed about ‖ Or the tower Ophel and raised it up a very great height and put captains of war in all the fenced cities of Judah 15 And he took away the strange gods and the idol out of the house of the LORD and all the altars that he had built in the mount of the house of the LORD and in Jerusalem and cast them out of the city 16 And he repaired the altar of the LORD and sacrificed thereon peace-offerings and thank-offerings and commanded Judah to serve the LORD God of Israel 17 Nevertheless the people did sacrifice still in the high-places yet unto the LORD their God onely 18 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh his prayer unto his God and the words of the seers that spake to him in the name of the LORD God of Israel behold thâ—y are written in the book of the kings of Israel 19 His prayer also and how God was entreated of him and all his sin and his trespass and the places wherein he built high places and set up groves and graven images before he was humbled behold they are written among the sayings of ‖ Or Hosai the seers 20 ¶ So Manasseh slept with his fathers and they buried him in his own house and Amon his son reigned in his stead 21 ¶ * 2 Kin. 21.19 c Amon was two and twenty years old when he began to reign and reigned two years in Jerusalem 22 But he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD as did Manasseh his father for Amon sacrificed unto all the carved images which Manasseh his father had made and served them 23 And humbled not himself before the LORD as Manasseh his father had humbled himself but Amon †Heb. multiplied trespass trespassed more and more 24 And his servants conspired against him and slew him in his own house 25 ¶ Buâ— the people of the land slew all them that had conspired against king Amon and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his stead CHAP. XXXIV 1 Josiah his good reign 3 He destroyeth idolatry 8 He taketh order for the repair of the temple 14 Hilkiah having found a book of the law Josiah sendeth to Huldah to enquire of the Lord. 23 Huldah prophesieth the destruction of Jerusalem but respite thereof in Josiahs time 29 Josiah causing it to be read in a solemn assembly râ—neweth the covenant with God JOsiah * 2 Kin. 21.1 c was eight years old when he began to reign and he reigned in Jerusalem one and thirty years 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD and walked in the ways of David his father and declined neither to the right hand nor to the left 3
¶ For in the eighth year of his reign while he was yet young he began to seek after the God of David his father and in the twelfth year he began * 1 Kin. 13.2 to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places and the groves and the carved images and the molten images 4 * Levit. 26.30 And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence and the ‖ Or suâ—-images images that were on high above them he cut down and the groves and the carved images and the molten images he brake in pieces and made dust of them and strowed it upon the †Heb. face of the graves graves of them that had sacrificed unto them 5 And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem 6 And so did he in the cities of Manasseh and Ephraim and Simeon even unto Naphtali with their ‖ Or mauls mattocks round about 7 And when he had broken down the altars and the groves and had beaten the graven images †Heb. to make powder into powder and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel he returned to Jerusalem 8 ¶ Now in the eighteenth year of his reign when he had purged the land and the house he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah and Maaseiah the governour of the city and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder to repair the house of the LORD his God 9 And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim and of all the remnant of Israel and of all Judah and Benjamin and they returned to Jerusalem 10 And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of the LORD and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the LORD to repair and mend the house 11 Even to the artificers and builders gave they it to buy hewn stonâ— and timber for couplings and ‖ Or to rafter to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed 12 And the men did the work faithfully and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah the Levites of the sons of Merari and Zechariah and Meshullam of the sons of the Kohathites to set it forward and other of the Levites all that could skill of instruments of muâ—ick 13 Also they were over the bearers of burdens and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service and of the Levites there were scribes and officers and porters 14 ¶ And when they â—rought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD Hilkiah the priest * 2 Kin. 22.8 c. found a book of the law of the LORD given †Heb. by the hand of by Moses 15 And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan 15 And Shaphan carried the book to the king and brought the king word back again saying All that was committed †Heb. to the hand of to thy servants they do it 17 And they have †Heb. poured out or melted gathered together the money that was found in the house of the LORD and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers and to the hand of the workmen 18 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king saying Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book And Shaphan read †Heb. â—â—it it before the king 19 And it came to pass when the king had heard the words of the law that he rent his clothes 20 And the king commanded Hilkiah and Ahikam the son of Shaphan and ‖ Or Athbor 2 King 2â— 12 Abdon the son of Micah and Shaphan the scribe and Asaiah a servant of the kings saying 21 Go enquire of the LORD for me and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah concerning the words of the book that is found for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD to do after all that is written in this book 22 And Hilkiah and they that the king had appointed went to Huldah the prophetess the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath the son of ‖ Or Hâ—rbaâ— 2 King 22.14 Hasrah keeper of the †Heb. â—â—â—ments wardrobe now she dwelt in Jerusalem ‖ Or in the sâ—â—â—ol or in the second part in the colledge and they spake to her to that effect 23 ¶ And she answered them Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Tell ye the man that sent you to me 24 Thus saith the LORD Behold I will bring evil upon this place and upon the inhabitants thereof even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah 25 Because they have forsaken me and have burned incense unto other gods that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place and shall not be quenched 26 And as for the king of Judah who sent you to enquire of the LORD so shall ye say unto him Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard 27 Because thine heart was tendâ—r and thou didst humble thy self before God when thou heardest his words against this place and against the inhabitants thereof and humbledst thy self beâ—ore me and didst rend thy clothes and weep before me I have even heard thee also saith the LORD 28 Behold I will gather thee to thy fathers and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place and upon the inhabitants of the same So they brought the king word again 29 ¶ * 2 King 23.1 Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem 30 And the king went up into the house of the LORD and all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the priests and the Levites and all the people †Heb. som â—reat can to â—â—ull great and small and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD 31 And the king stood in his place and made a covenant before the LORD to walk after the LORD and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all his heart and with all his soul to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book 32 And he caused all that were †Heb. â—â—und present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God
a great feast unto all his princes and his servants even Esthers feast and he made a †Heb. rest release to the provinces and gave gifts according to the state of the king 19 And when the virgins were gathered together the second time then Mordecai sat in the kings gate 20 Esther had not yet shewed her kindred nor her people as Mordecai had charged her for Esther did the commandment of Mordecai like as when she was brought up with him 21 ¶ In those days while Mordecai sat in the kings gate two of the kings chamberlains ‖ Or Bigthana ch 6.2 Bigthan and Teresh of those which kept †Heb. the threshold the door were wroth and sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus 22 And the thing was known to Mordecai who told it unto Esther the queen and Esther certified the king thereof in Mordecai's name 23 And when inquisition was made of the matter it was found out therefore they were both hanged on a tree and it was written in the book of the chronicles before the king CHAP. III. 1 Haman advanced by the king and despised by Mordecai seeketh revenge upon all the Jews 7 He casteth lots 8 He obtaineth by calumniation a decree of the king to put the Jews to death AFter these things did king Ahasuerus promote Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite and advanced him and set his seat above all the princes that were with him 2 And all the kings servants that were in the kings gate bowed and reverenced Haman for the king had so commanded concerning him but Mordecai bowed not nor did him reverence 3 Then the kings servants which were in the kings gate said unto Mordecai Why transgressest thou the kings commandment 4 Now it came to pass when they spake daily unto him and he hearkned not unto them that they told Haman to see whether Mordecai his maâ—ters would stand for he had told them that he was a Jew 5 And when Haman saw that Mordecai bowed not nor did him reverence then was Haman full of wrath 6 And he thought scorn to lay hands on Mordecai alone for they had shewed him the people of Mordecai wherefore Haman sought to destroy all the Jews that were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus even the people of Mordecai 7 ¶ In the first moneth that is the moneth Nisan in the twelfth year of king Ahasuerus they cast Pur that is the lot before Haman from day to day and from moneth to moneth to the twelfth moneth that is the moneth Adar 8 ¶ And Haman said unto king Ahasuerus There is a certain people scattered abroad and dispersed among the people in all the province of thy kingdom and their laws are diverse from all people neither keep they the kings laws therefore it is not †Heb. meet or eâ—uâ—l for the kings profit to suffer them 9 If it please the king let it be written †Heb. to destroy them that they may be destroyed and I will †Heb. weigh pay ten thousand talents of silver to the hands of those that have the charge of the business to bring it into the kings treasuries 10 And the king took his ring from his hand and gave it unto Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite the Jews ‖ Or oppressour enemy 11 And the king said unto Haman The silver is given to thee the people also to do with them as it seemeth good to thee 12 Then were the kings ‖ Or secretariâ—s scribes called on the thirteenth day of the first moneth and there was written according to all that Haman had commanded unto the kings lieutenants and to the governours that were over every province and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing thereof and to every people after their language in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written and sealed with the kings ring 13 And the letters were sent by posts into all the kings provinces to destroy to kill and to cause to perish all Jews both young and old little children and women in one day even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth moneth which is the moneth Adar and to take the spoil of them for a prey 14 The copy of the writing for a commandment to be given in every province was published unto all people that they should be ready against that day 15 The posts went out being hastned by the kings commandment and the decree was given in Shushan the palace and the king and Haman sat down to drink but the city Shushan was perplexed CHAP. IV. 1 The great mourning of Mordecai and the Jews 4 Esther understanding it sendeth to Mordecai who sheweth the cause and adviseth her to undertake the suit 10 She excusing her self is threatned by Mordecai 15 She appointing a fast undertaketh the suit WHen Mordecai perceived all that was done Mordecai rent his clothes and put on sackcloth with ashes and went out into the midst of the city and cried with a loud and a bitter cry 2 And came even before the kings gate for none miâ—ht enter into the kings gate clothed with sackcloth 3 And in every province whithersoever the kings commandment and his decree came there was great mourning among the Jews and fasting and weeping and wailing and †Heb. sackcloth and ashes were laid under many many lay in sackcloth ashes 4 ¶ So Esthers maids and her †Heb. â—â—muchs chamberlains came told it her then was the queen exceedingly grieved she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai and to take away his sackcloth from him but he received it not 5 Then called Esther for Hatach one of the kings chamberlains †Heb. whom he had set before her whom he had appointed to attend upon her and gave him a commandment to Mordecai to know what it was and why it was 6 So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the street of the city which was before the kings gate 7 And Mordecai told him of all that had hapned unto him and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the kings treasuries for the Jews to destroy them 8 Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them to shew it unto Esther and to declare it unto her and to charge her that she should go in unto the king to make supplication unto him and to make request before him for her people 9 And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai 10 ¶ Again Esther spake unto Hatach and gave him commandment unto Mordecai 11 All the kings servants and the people of the kings provinces do know that whosoever whether man or woman shall come unto the king into the inner court who is not called there is one saw of his to put him to death except such to whom the king shall hold out the golden sceptre that he may live
but I have not been called to come in unthâ— king these thirty days 12 And they told to Mordecai Esthers words 13 Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther Think not with thy self that thou shalt escape in the kings house more then all the Jews 14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time then shall there †Heb. respiration enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place but thou and thy fathers house shall be destroyed and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this 15 ¶ Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer 16 Go gather together all the Jews that are †Heb. found present in Shushan and fast ye for me and neither eat nor drink three days night or day I also and my maidens will faâ—t likewise and so will I go in unto the king which is not according to the law and if I perish I perish 17 So Mordecai †Heb. â—â—ssed went his way and did according to all that Esther had commanded him CHAP. V. 1 Esther adventuring on the kings favour obtaineth the grace of the golden sceptâ—â— and inviteth the king and Haman to a banquet 6 She being encouraged by the king in her suit inviteth them to another banquet the next day 9 Haman proud of his advancement repineth at the contempt of Mordecai 14 By the counsel of Zeresh he buildeth for him 〈◊〉 pair of gallows NOw it came to pass on the third day that Esther put on her royal apparel and stood in the inner court of the kings house over against the kings house and the king sat upon his royal throne in the royal house over against the gate of the house 2 And it was so when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court that she obtained favour in his light and the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre that was in his hand so Esther drew near and touched the top of the sceptre 3 Then said the king unto her What wilt thou queen Esther and with is thy request it shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom 4 And Esther answered If it seem good unto the king let the king and Haman come this day unto the banquet that I have prepared for him 5 Then the king said Cause Haman to make haste that he may do as Esther hath said So the king and Haman came to the banquet that Esther had prepared 6 ¶ And the king said unto Esther at the banquet of wine What is thy petition and it shall be granted thee and what is thy request even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed 7 Then answered Esther and said My petition and my request is 8 If I have found favour in the sight of the king and if it please the king to grant my petition and †Heb. to do to perform my request let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I shall prepare for them and I will do to morrow as the king hath said 9 ¶ Then went Haman forth that day joyful and with a glad heart but when Haman saw Mordecai in the kings gate that he stood not up nor moved for him he was full of indignation against Mordecai 10 Nevertheless Haman refrained himself and when he came home he sent and †Heb. caused to come called for his friends and Zeresh his wife 11 And Haman told them of the glory of his riches and the multitude of his children and all the things wherein the king had promoted him and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king 12 Haman said moreover Yea Esther the queen did let no man come in with the king unto the banquet that she had prepared but my self and to morrow am I invited unto her also with the king 13 Yet all this availeth me nothing so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the kings gate 14 ¶ Then said Zeresh his wife and all his friends unto him Let a †Heb. tree gallows be made of fifty cubits high and to morrow speak thou unto the king that Mordecai may be hanged thereon then go thou in merrily with the king unto the banquet And the thing pleased Haman and he caused the gallows to be made CHAP. VI. 1 Ahasuerus reading in the chronicles of the good service done by Mordecai taketh care for his reward 4 Haman coming to sue that Mordecai might be banâ—ed unawares giveth counsel that he might do him honour 12 Complaining of his misfortun his friends tell him of his final destiny ON that night †Heb. the kings sleep fled away could not the king sleep and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles and they were read before the king 2 And it was found written that Mordecai had told of ‖ Or Bigthan ch 2.21 Bigthana and Teresh two of the kings chamberlains the keepers of the †Heb. threshold door who sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus 3 And the king said What honour and dignity hath been done to Mordecai for this Then said the kings servants that ministred unto him There is nothing done for him 4 ¶ And the king said Who is in the court Now Haman was come into the outward court of the kings house to speak unto the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him 5 And the kings servants said unto him Behold Haman standeth in the court And the king said Let him come in 6 So Haman came in and the king said unto him What shall be done unto the man †Heb. in whose honour the king delighteth whom the king delighteth to honour Now Haman thought in his heart To whom would the king delight to do honour more then to my self 7 And Haman answered the King For the man †Heb. in whose honour the king delighteth whom the king delighteth to honour 8 ¶ Let the royal apparel he brought †Heb. in them bring the royal apparel which the king useth to wear and the horse that the king rideth upon and the crown royal which is set upon his head 9 And let this apparel and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the kings most noble princes that they may aray the man withal whom the king delighteth to honour and †Heb. wherewith the king clotheth himself bring him on hors-back through the street of the city and proclaim before him Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delighteth to honour 10 Then the king said to Haman Make haste and take the apparel and the horse as thou hast said and do even so to Mordecai the Jew that sitteth at the kings gate †Heb. cause him to ride let nothing fail of all that thou hast spoken 11 Then took Haman the apparel and the horse and arayed Mordecai and brought him on hors-back
are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media Persia 3 For Mordecai the Jew was next unto king Ahasuerus and great among the Jews and accepted of the multitude of his brethren seeking the wealth of his people and speaking peace to all his seed ¶ The book of JOB CHAP. I. 1 The holiness â—â—icheâ— and religious care of Job for his children 6 Satan appearing before God by calumâ—iation obtaineth leave to tempt Job 3Vnderstanding of the loss of his goods and children in his mourning â—e blesseth God THere was a man in the land of Uâ— whose name was Job and that man was * Ch. 2.3 perfect and upright and one that feared God and eschewed evil 2 And there were born unto him seven sons three daughters â— His ‖ Or â—attel substance also was seven thousand sheep and three thousand â—â—nielâ— and five hundred yoke of oâ—en and five hundred she-asses and a very great ‖ Or husbandry houshold so that this man was the greatest of all the †Heb. sons of the east men of the east 4 And his sons went and feasted in their houses every one his day sent and called for their three sisters to eat and to drink with them 5 And it was so when the days of their feasting were gone about that Job sent and sanctified them and rose up early in the morning and offered burnt-offerings according to the number of them all for Job said It may be that my sons have sinned and * 1 Kin. 21.10 13. cursed God in their hearts Thus did Job †Heb. all the days continually 6 ¶ Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD and †Heb. the adversary Satan came also †Heb. in the midst of them among them 7 And the LORD said unto Satan Whence comest thou Then Satan answered the LORD and said From * 1 Pet. 5.8 going to and fro in the earth and from walking up and down in it 8 And the LORD said unto Satan †Heb. Hast thou â—â—t thy heart on Hast thou considered my servant Job that there is none like him in the earth a perfect and an upright man one that feareth God and escheweth evil 9 Then Satan answered the LORD and said Doth Job fear God for nought 10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him and about his house and about all that he hath on every side thou hast blessed the work of his hands and his ‖ Or cattel substance is increased in the land 11 But put forth thine hand now and touch all that he hath †Heb. if he curse thee not to thy face and he will curse thee to thy face 12 And the LORD said unto Satan Behold all that he hath is in thy †Heb. hand power onely upon himself put not forth thine hand So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD 13 ¶ And there was a day when his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brothers house 14 And there came a messenger unto Job and said The oxen were plowing and the asses feeding beside them 15 And the Sabeans fell upon them and took them away yea they have slain the servants with the edge of the sword and I onely am escapee alone to tell thee 16 While he was yet speaking there came also another and said ‖ Or a treat fire The fire of God is faln from heaven and hath burnt up the sheep and the servants and consumed them and I onely am escaped alone to tell thee 17 While he was yet speaking there came also another and said The Caldeans made out three bands and †Heb. rushed fell upon the camels and have carried them away yea and slain the servants with the edge of the sword and I onely am escaped alone to tell thee 18 While he was yet speaking there came also another and said Thy sons and thy daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brothers house 19 And behold there came a great wind †Heb. from aside c. from the wilderness and smote the four corners of the house and it fell upon the young men and they are dead and I onely am escaped alone to tell thee 20 Then Job arose and rent his ‖ Or robe mantle and shaved his head and fell down upon the ground and worshipped 21 And said * Eccses 5.15 1 Tim. 6.7 Naked came I out of my mothers womb and naked shall I return thither the LORD gave and the LORD hath taken away blessed be the name of the LORD 22 In all this Job sinned not nor ‖ Or attributed foller to God charged God foolishly CHAP. II. 1 Satan appearing again before God obtaineth further leave to tempt Job 7 He smiteth him with sore boyls 9 Job reproveth his wife moving him to curse God 11 His three friends condole with him in silence AGain there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD and Satan came also among them to present himself before the LORD 2 And the LORD said unto Satan From whence comest thou And * Chap. 1.7 Satan answered the LORD and said From going to and fro in the earth and from walking up and down in it 3 And the LORD said unto Satan Hast thou considered my servant Job that there is none like him in the earth * Chap. 1.1 8. a perfect and an upright man one that feareth God and escheweth evil and still he heldeth fast his integrity although thou movedst me against him †Heb. to swallow him up to destroy him without cause 4 And Satan answered the LORD and said Skin for skin yea all that a man hath will he give for his life 5 But put forth thine hand now and touch his bone and his flesh and he will curse thee to thy face 6 And the LORD said unto Satan Behold he is in thine hand ‖ Or onely but save his life 7 ¶ So went Satan forth from the presence of the LORD and smote Job with sore boyls from the sole of his foot unto his crown 8 And he took him a potsheard to scrape himself withal and he sat down among the ashes 9 ¶ Then said his wife unto him Dost thou still retain thine integrity curse God and die 10 But he said unto her Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh what shall we receive good at the hand of God and shall we not receive evil In all this did not Job sin with his lips 11 ¶ Now when Jobs three friends heard of all this evil that was come upon him they came every one from his own place Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite for they had made an appointment together to come to mourn with him and to comfort him 12 And when they lift

XXV 1 Jeremiah reproving the Jews disobedience to the prophets 8 foretelleth the seventy years captivity 12 and after that the destruction of Babylon 15Vnder the type of a cup of wine be foresheweth the destruction of all nations 34 The howling of the shepherds THe word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah that was the first year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon 2 The which Jeremiah the prophet spake unto all the people of Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem saying 3 From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah even unto this day that is the three and twentieth year the word of the LORD hath come unto me and I have spoken unto you rising early and speaking but ye have not hearkned 4 And the LORD hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets * Ch. 29.19 rising early and sending them but ye have not hearkned nor inclined your ear to hear 5 They said * 2 Kin. 17.13 Ch. 18.11 and 35.15 Jon. 3.8 Turn ye again now every one from his evil way and from the evil of your doings and dwell in the land that the LORD hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever 6 And go not after other gods to serve them and to worship them and provoke me not to anger with the works of your hands and I will do you no hurt 7 Yet ye have not hearkned unto me saith the LORD that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt 8 ¶ Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts Because ye have not heard my words 9 Behold I will send and take all the families of the north saith the LORD and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon my servant and will bring them against this land and against the inhabitants thereof and against all these nations round about and will utterly destroy them and make them an astonishment and an hissing and perpetual desolations 10 Moreover †Heb. Moah and the children of * Ch. 49.1 Ammon 22 And all the kings of * Ch. 47.4 Tyrus and all the kings of Zidon and the kings of the ‖ Or region by the sea-side isles which are beyond the * Ch. 49.23 sea 23 * Ch. 49.28 Dedan and Tema and Buz and all †Heb. cut off into corners or having the corners of the hair polled Ch. 9.26 that are in the utmost corners 24 And all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the * Ch. 49.31 mingled people that dwell in the desert 25 And all the kings of Zimri and all the kings of * Ch. 49.34 Elam and all the kings of the Medes 26 And all the kings of the north far and near one with another and all the kingdoms of the world which are upon the face of the earth and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them 27 Therefore thou shalt say unto them Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Drink ye and be drunken and spue and fall and rise no more because of the sword which I will send among you 28 And it shall be if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink then shalt thou say unto them Thus saith the LORD of hosts Ye shall certainly drink 29 For lo I begin to bring evil on the * 1 Pet. 4.17 city †Heb. upon which my name is called which is called by my name and should ye be utterly unpunished ye shall not be unpunished for I will call for a sword
of Judah saying 2 Go unto the house of the Rechabites and speak unto them and bring them into the house of the LORD into one of the chambers and give them wine to drink 3 Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah the son of Habaziniah and his brethren and all his sons the whole house of the Rechabites 4 And I brought them into the house of the LORD into the chamber of the sons of Hanan the son of Igdaliah a man of God which was by the chamber of the princes which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum the keeper of the †Heb. threshold or vesel door 5 And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine and cups and I said unto them Drink ye wine 6 But they said We will drink no wine for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us saying Ye shall drink no wine neither ye nor your sons for ever 7 Neither shall ye build house nor sowe seed nor plant vineyard nor have any but all your days ye shall dwell in tents that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers 8 Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us to drink no wine all our days we our wives our sons nor our daughters 9 Nor to build houses for us to dwell in neither have we vineyard nor field nor seed 10 But we have dwelt in tents and have obeyed and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us 11 But it came to pass when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land that we said Come and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Caldeans and for fear of the army of the Syrians so we dwell at Jerusalem 12 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah saying 13 Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem Will ye not receive instruction to hearken to my words saith the LORD 14 The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab that he commanded his sons not to drink wine are performed for unto this day they drink none but obey their fathers commandment notwithstanding I have spoken unto you rising early and speaking but ye hearkned not unto me 15 I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets rising up early and sending them saying * Chap. 18.11 25.5 Return ye now every man from his evil way and iniend your doings and go not after other gods to serve them and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers but ye have not inclined your ear nor hearkned unto me 16 Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father which he commanded them but this people hath not hearkned unto me 17 Therefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them because I have spoken unto them but they have not heard and I have called unto them but they have not answered 18 ¶ And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father and kept all his precepts and done according unto all that he hath commanded you 19 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel †Heb. There shall not a man be cut off from Jonedab the son of Rechab to stand c. Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever CHAP. XXXVI 1 Jeremiah causeth Barueh to write his prophesie 5 and publickly to read it 11 The princes having intelligence thereof by Michalab send Jedudi to fetch the roll and read it 19 They will Baruch to hide himself and Jeremiah 20 The king Jehoiakim being certified thereof heareth part of it and burneth the roll 27 Jeremiah denouneeth his judgement 32 Baruch writeth a new copy ANd it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah that this word came unto Jeremiah from the LORD saying 2 Take thee a roll of a book and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel and against Judah and against all the nations from the day I spake unto thee from the days of * Ch. 25.3 Josiah even unto this day 3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them that they may return every man from his evil way that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin 4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD which he had spoken unto him upon a roll of a book 5 And Jeremiah commanded Baruch saying I am shut up I cannot go into the house of the LORD 6 Therefore go thou and read in the roll which thou hast written from my mouth the words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORDS house upon the fasting-day and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities 7 It may be †Heb. their supplication shall sall they will present their supplication before the LORD and will return every one from his evil way for great is the anger and the fury that the LORD hath pronounced against this people 8 And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet cummanded him reading in the book the words of the LORD in the LORDs house 9 And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah in the ninth moneth that they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem 10 Then read Baruch in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe in the higher court at the ‖ Or door * Chap. 26.10 entry of the new gate of the LORDs house in the ears of all the people 11 ¶ When Michaiah the son of Gemariah the son Shaphan had heard out of the book all the words of the LORD 12 Then he went down into the kings house into the scribes chamber and lo all the princes sat there even Elishama the scribe and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah and Elnathan the son of Achbor and Gemariah the son of Shaphan and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah and all the princes 13 Then Michaiah declared unto them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read the book in
the ears of the people 14 Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah the son of Shelemiah the son of Cushi unto Baruch saying Take in thine hand the roll wherein thou hast read in the ears of the people and come So Baruch the son of Neriah took the roll in his hand and came unto them 15 And they said unto him Sit down now and read it in our ears So Baruch read it in their ears 16 Now it came to pass when they had heard all the words they were afraid both one and other and said unto Baruch We will surely tell the king of all these words 17 And they asked Baruch saying Tell us now How didst thou write all these words at his mouth 18 Then Baruch answered them He pronounced all these words unto me with his mouth and I wrote them with ink in the book 19 Then said the princes unto Baruch Go hide thee thou and Jeremiah and let no man know where ye be 20 ¶ And they went in to the king into the court but they laid up the roll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe and told all the words in the ears of the king 21 So the king sent Jehudi to set the roll and he took it out of Elishama the scribes chamber and Jehudi read it in the ears of the king and in the ears of all the princes which stood beside the king 21 So the king sent Jehudi to set the roll and he took it out of Elishama the scribes chamber and Jehudi read it in the ears of the king and in the ears of all the princes which stood beside the king 22 Now the king sat in the winter-house in the ninth moneth and there was a fire on the hearth burning before him 23 And it came to pass that when Jehudi had read three or four leaves he cut it with the pen-knife and cast it into the fire that was on the hearth until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was on the hearth 24 Yet they were not afraid nor rent their garments neither the king nor any of his servants that heard all these words 25 Nevertheless Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had made intercession to the king that he would not burn the roll but he would not heat them 26 But the king commanded Jerahmeel the son ‖ Or oâ—tiâ— king of Hammelech and Seraiah the son of Azriel and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet but the LORD hid them 27 ¶ Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah after that the king had burnt the roll and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah saying 28 Take thee again another roll and write in it all the former words that were in the first roll which Jehorakim king of Judah hath burnt 29 And thou shalt say to Jehoiakim king of Judah Thus saith the LORD Thou hast burnt this roll saying Why hast thou written therein saying The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast 30 Therefore thus saith the LORD of Jehoiakim king of Judah He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David and his dead body shall be * Chap. 22.19 cast out in the day to the heat and in the night to the frost 31 And I will †Heb. visit upon punish him and his seed and his seed and his servants for their iniquity and I will bring upon them and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem and upon the men of Judah all the evil that I have pronounced against them but they hearkned not 32 ¶ Then took Jeremiah another roll and gave it to Baruch the scribe the son of Neriah who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burnt in the fire and there were added besides unto them many †Heb. 〈◊〉 they like words CHAP. XXXVII 1 The Egyptians having raised the siege of the Caldeans king Zedekiah sendeth to Jeremiah to pray for the people 6 Jeremiah prophesieth the Caldeans certain return and victory 11 He is taken for a fugitive beaten and put in prison 16 He assureth Zedekiah of the captivity 18 Intreating for his liberty he obtaineth some favour ANd king * 2 Kin. 24.17 2 Chr. 36.10 Chap. 22.24 Zedekiah the son of Josiah reigned in stead of Coniah the son of Jehoikim whom Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon made king in the land of Judah 2 But neither he nor his servants nor the people of the land did hearken unto the words of the LORD which he spake †Heb. by the hand of the prophet by the prophet Jeremiah 3 And Zedekiah the king sent Jehucal the son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah the priest to the prophet Jeremiah saying Pray now unto the LORD our God for us 4 Now Jeremiah came in and went out among the people for they had not put him into prison 5 Then Pharaohs army was come forth out of Egypt and when the Caldeans that besieged Jerusalem heard tidings of them they departed from Jerusalem 6 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto the prophet Jeremiah saying 7 Thus saith the LORD the God of Israel Thus shall ye say to the king of Judah that sent you unto me to enquire of me Behold Pharaohs army which is come forth to help you shall return to Egypt into their own land 8 And the Caldeans shall come again and fight against this city and take it and burn it with fire 9 Thus saith the LORD Deceive not your †Heb. soult selves saying The Caldeans shall surely depart from us for they shall not depart 10 For though ye had smitten the whole army of the Caldeans that fight against you and there remained but †Heb. thrust through wounded men among them yet should they rise up every man in his tent and burn this city with fire 11 ¶ And it came to pass that when the army of the Caldeans was †Heb. made to osâ—end broken up from Jerusalem for fear of Pharaohs army 12 Then Jeremiah went forth out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin ‖ Or to slip away from thence in the midst of the people to separate himself thence in the mids of the people 13 And when he was in the gate of Benjamin a captain of the ward was there whose name was Irijah the son of Shelemiah the son of Hananiah and he took Jeremiah the prophet saying Thou fallest away to the Caldeans 14 Then said Jeremiah It is †Heb. falshood or a lie false I fall not away to the Caldeans but he hearkned not to him so Irijah took Jeremiah and brought him to the princes 15 Wherefore the princes were wroth with Jeremiah and smote him and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe for they
her saith the LORD 54 A found of a cry cometh from Babylon and great destruction from the land of the Caldeans 55 Because the LORD hath spoiled Babylon and destroyed out of her the great voice when her waves do roar like great waters a noise of their voice is uttered 56 Because the spoiler is come upon her even upon Babylon and her mighty men are taken every one of their bows is broken for the LORD God of recompences shall surely requite 57 And I will make drunk her princes and her wise men her captains and her rulers and her mighty men and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake saith the King whose name is the LORD of hosts 58 Thus saith the LORD of hosts ‖ Or The walls of broad Babylon The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly ‖ Or made naked broken and her high gates shall be burnt with fire and the people shall labour in vain and the folk in the fire and they shall be weary 59 ¶ The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah the son of Maaseiah when he went ‖ Or on the behalf of with Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign and this Seraiah was a ‖ Or prince of Menucha or chief chamberlain quiet prince 60 So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon even all these words that are written against Babylon 61 And Jeremiah said to Seraiah When thou comest to Babylon and shalt see and shalt read all these words 62 Then shalt thou say O LORD thou hast spoken against this place to cut it off that none shall remain in it neither man nor beast but that it shall be †Heb. desolations desolate for ever 63 And it shall be when thou hast made an end of reading this book that thou shalt binde a stone to it cast it into the midst of Euphrates 64 And thou shalt say Thus shall Babylon sink and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her and they shall be weary Thus far are the words of Jeremiah CHAP. LII 1 Zedekiah rebelleth 4 Jerusalem is besieged and taken 8 Zedekiahs sons killed and his own eyes put out 12 Nebuzar-adan burneth and spoileth the city 24 He carrieth away the captives 31 Evil-merodach advanceth Jehoiachin ZEdekiah was * 2 Kin. 24.18 one and twenty year old when he †Heb. reigned began to reign and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah 2 And he did that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD according to all that Jehoiakim had done 3 For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah till he had cast them out from his presence that Zedekiah revelled against the king of Babylon 4 ¶ And it came to pass in the * 2 Kin. 25.1 Ch. 39.1 ninth year of his reign in the the moneth in the tenth day of the moneth that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came he and all his army against Jerusalem and pitched against it and built forts against it round about 5 So the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah 6 And in the fourth moneth in the ninth day of the moneth the famine was fore in the city so that there was no bread for the people of the land 7 Then the city was broken up and all the men of war fled and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls which was by the kings garden now the Caldeans were by the city round about and they went by the way of the plain 8 ¶ But the army of the Caldeans pursued after the king and overtook 9 Then they took the king and carried him up unto the king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath where he gave judgement upon him 10 And the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes he slew also all the princes of Judah in Riblah 11 Then he †Heb. blinded put out the eyes of Zedekiah and the king of Babylon bound him in ‖ Or fetters chains and carried him to Babylon and put him in †Heb. house of the wards prison till the day of his death 12 ¶ Now in the fifth moneth in the tenth day of the moneth which was the nineteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came Nebuzar-adam ‖ Or chief marshal †Heb. chief of the executioners or slaughter-men And so v. ◠14. c. captain of the guard which †Heb. stood before served the king of Babylon into Jerusalem 13 And burnt the house of the LORD and the kings house and all the houses of Jerusalem and all the houses of the great men burnt he with fire 14 And all the army of the Caldeans that were with the captain of the guard brake down all the walls of Jerusalem round about 15 Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away captive certain of the poor of the people and the residue of the people that remained in the city and those that fell away that fell to the king of Babylon and the rest of the multitude 16 But Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard left certain of the poor of the land for vine-dressers and for husbandmen 17 Also the * Ch. 27.19 pillars of brass that were in the house of the LORD and the bases and the brasen sea that was in the house of the LORD the Caldeans brake and carried all the brass of them to Babylon 18 The caldrons also and the ‖ Or instruments to remove the ashes shovels and the snuffers and the ‖ Or basons bowls and the spoons and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministred took they away 19 And the basons and the ‖ Or censers fire-pans and the bowls and the caldrons and the candlesticks and the spoons and the cups that which was of gold in gold and that which was of silver in silver took the captain of the guard away 20 The two pillars one sea and twelve brasen bulls that were under the bases which king Solomon had made in the house of the LORD †Heb. their brass the brass of all these vessels was without weight 21 And concerning the * 1 Kin. 7.15 2 Kin. 25.17 2 Chr. 3.15 pillars the height of one pillar was eighteen cubits and a †Heb. threed fillet of twelve cubits did compass it and the thickness thereof was four singers it was hollow 22 And a chapiter of brass was upon it and the height of one chapiter was five cubits with net-work and pomegranates upon the chapiters round about all of brass the second pillar also and the pomegranates were like unto these 23 And there were ninety and six pomegranates on a side and all the
face but he said unto me Understand O son of man for at the time of the end shall be the vision 18 Now as he was speaking with me I was in a deep sleep on my face toward the ground but he touched me and †Heb. made me stand upon 〈◊〉 standing set me upright 19 And he said Behold I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation for at the time appointed the end shall be 20 The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia 21 And the rough goat is the king of Grecia and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king 22 Now that being broken whereas four stood up for it four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation but not in his power 23 And in the latter time of their kingdom when the transgressours †Heb. are accomplished are come to the full a king of fierce countenance and understanding dark sentences shall stand up 24 And his power shall be mighty but not by his own power and he shall destroy wonderfully and shall prosper and practise and shall destroy the mighty and the †Heb. people of the holy ones holy people 25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand and he shall magnifie himself in his heart and by ‖ Or prosperitâ— peace shall destroy many he shall also stand up against the prince of princes but he shall be * 2 Maâ— 9.9 broken without hand 26 And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true wherefore shut thou up the vision for it shall be for many days 27 And I Daniel fainted and was sick certain days afterward I rose up and did the kings business and I was astonished at the vision but none understood it CHAP. IX 1 Daniel considâ—ring the time of the captivity 3 maketh confession of sins 16 and prayeth for the restauration of Jerusalem 2â— Gaâ—riel informeth him of the seventy weeks IN the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus of the seed of the Medes ‖ Or in which he c. which was made king over the realm of the Caldeans 2 In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years whereof the word of the LORD came to * Jer. 25 12 2â— 1â— Jeremiah the prophet that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem 3 ¶ And I set my face unto the Lord God to seek by prayer and supplications with fasting and sackcloth and ashes 4 And I prayed unto the LORD my God and made my confession and said O * Deut â—â— Neh. 1.5 Lord the great and dreadful God keeping the covenant and mercy to them that love him and to them that keep his commandments 5 * Baruch 1.17 We have sinned and have committed iniquity and have done wickedly and have rebelled even by departing from thy precepts and from thy judgements 6 Neither have we hearkned unto thy servants the prophets which spake in thy name to our kings our princes and our fathers and to all the people of the land 7 O Lord righteousness ‖ Or thou hast c. belongeth unto thee but unto us confusion of faces as at this day to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and unto all Israel that are near and that are far off through all the countreys whither thou hast driven them because of their trespass that they have trespassed against thee 8 O Lord * Baruch 1.15 to us belongeth confusion of face to our kings to our princes and to our fathers because we have sinned against thee 9 To the Lord our God belong mercies and forgivenesses though we have rebelled against him 10 Neither have we obeyed the voice of the LORD our God to walk in his laws which he set before us by his servants the prophets 11 Yea all Israel have transgressed thy law even by departing that they might not obey thy voice therefore the curse is poured upon us and the oath that is written in the * Lev. 26.14 c. Deut. 28.15 c. 29.20 c. 30.17 18 3â— 17 c. 32.19 c. law of Moses the servant of God because we have sinned against him 12 And he hath confirmed his words which he spake against us and against our judges that judged us by bringing upon us a great evil for under the whole heaven hath not been done as hath been done upon Jerusalem 13 As * Lev 26.14 c. Deut. 23.15 Lam. 2.17 it is written in the law of Moses all this evil is come upon us yet †Heb. intreated we not the face of the c. made we not our prayer before the LORD our God that we might turn from our iniquities and understand thy truth 14 Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil and brought it upon us for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which he doeth for we obeyed not his voice 15 And now O Lord our God that hast brought thy people forth out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and hast †Heb. made thee a name gotten thee * Exod. 14 18. renown as at this day we have sinned we have done wickedly 16 ¶ O Lord according to all thy righteousness I beseech thee let thine anger and thy fury be turned away from thy city Jerusalem thy holy mountain because for our sins and for the iniquities of our fathers Jerusalem and thy people are become a reproach to all that are about us 17 Now therefore O our God hear the prayer of thy servant and his supplications and cause thy face to shine upon thy sanctuary that is desolate for the Lords sake 18 O my God incline thine ear and hear open thine eyes and behold our desolations and the city †Heb. whereupon thy name is callâ—â— which is called by thy name for we do not †Heb. cause to fall present our supplications before thee for our righteousnesses but for thy great mercies 19 O Lord hear O Lord forgive O Lord hearken and do defer not for thine own sake O my God for thy city and thy people are called by thy name 20 ¶ And whiles I was speaking and praying and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel and presenting my supplication before the LORD my God for the holy mountain of my God 21 Yea whiles I was speaking in prayer even the man * Ch. 8.16 Gabriel whom I had seen in the vision at the beginning being caused to flie †Heb with weaâ—â—â—ess or flight swiftly touched me about the time of the evening oblation 22 And he informed me and talked with me and said O Daniel I am now come forth †Heb. to make thee skilful of understanding to give thee skill
that sinned and ‖ Or â—ne ungodly did wickedly against the Lord above all people and kingdoms and how they grieved him ‖ Or sensibly exceedingly so that the words of the Lord rose up against Israel 25 * 2 Chr. 35.20 Now after all these acts of Josias it came to pass that Pharaoh the king of Egypt came to raise war at Carchamis upon Euphrates and Josias went out against him 26 But the king of Egypt sent to him saying What have I to do with thee O king of Judea 27 I am not sent out from the Lord God against thee for my war is upon Euphrates and now the Lord is with me yea the Lord is with me hasting me forward depart from me and be not against the Lord. 28 Howbeit Josias did not turn back his chariot from him but undertook to fight with him not regarding the words of the prophet Jeremy spoken by the mouth of the Lord 29 But joyned battel with him in the plain of Magiddo and the princes came against king Josias 30 Then said the king unto his servants Carry me away out of the battel for I am very weak and immediately his servants took him away out of the battel 31 Then gat he up upon his second chariot and being brought back to Jerusalem died and was buried in his fathers sepulchre 32 And in all Jewry they mourned for Josias yea Jeremy the prophet lamented for Josias and the chief men with the women made lamentation for him unto this day and this was given out for an ordinance to be done continually in all the nation of Israel 33 These things are written in the book of the stories of the kings of Judah and every one of the acts that Josias did and his glory and his understanding in the law of the Lord and the things that he had done before and the things now recited are reported in the book of the kings of Israel and Judea 34 * 2 Kings 23.30 2 Chr. 36 1â— And the people took Joachaz the son of Josias and made him king in stead of Josias his father when he was twenty and three years old 35 And he reigned in Judea and in Jerusalem three moneths and then the king of Egypt deposed him from reigning in Jerusalem 36 And he set a tax upon the land of an hundred talents of silver and one talent of gold 37 The king of Egypt also made king Joacim his brother king of Judea and Jerusalem 38 And he bound Joacim and the nobles but Zaraces his brother he apprehended and brought him out of Egypt 39 Five and twenty years old was * 2 Chr. 36 4 5. Jeboiakim or Ellakim Joacim when he was made king in the land of Judea and Jerusalem and he did evil before the Lord. 40 Wherefore against him Nebuchodonosor the king of Babylon came up and bound him with a chain of brass and carried him unto Babylon 41 Nebuchodonosor also took of the holy vessels of the Lord and carried them away and set them in his own temple at Babylon 42 But those things that are recorded of him and of his uncleanness and impiety are written in the chronicles of the kings 43 And Joacim his son reigned in his stead he was made king being eighteen years old 44 And reigned but three moneths and ten days in Jerusalem and did evil before the Lord. 45 So after a year Nebuchodonosor sent and caused him to be brought into Babylon with the holy vessels of the Lord 46 And made Zedechias king of Judea and Jerusalem when he was one and twenty years old and he reigned eleven years 47 And he did evil also in the sight of the Lord and cared not for the words that were spoken unto him by the prophet Jeremy from the mouth of the Lord. 48 And after that king Nebuchodonosor had made him to swear by the name of the Lord he forswore himself and rebelled and hardning his neck and his heart he transgressed the laws of the Lord God of Israel 49 The governours also of the people and of the priests did many things against the laws and passed all the pollutions of all nations and defiled the temple of the Lord which was sanctified in Jerusalem 50 Nevertheless the God of their fathers sent by his messenger to call them back because he spared them and his tabernacle also 51 But they had his messengers in derision and look when the Lord spake unto them they made a sport of his prophets 52 So far forth that he being wroth with his people for their great ungodliness commanded the kings of the Caldees to come up against them 53 Who slew their young men with the sword yea even within the compass of their holy temple and spared neither young man nor maid old man nor childe among them for he delivered all into their hands 54 And they took all the holy vessels of the Lord both great and small with the vessels of the ark of God and the kings treasures and carried them away into Babylon 55 As for the house of the Lord they burnt it brake down the walls of Jerusalem set fire upon her towers 56 And as for her glorious things they never ceased till they had consumed and brought them all to nought and the people that were not slain with the sword he carried unto Babylon 57 Who became servants to him and his children till the Persians reigned to fulfil the * Jer. 25.11 29.10 word of the Lord spoken by the mouth of Jeremy 58 Until the land had enjoyed her sabbaths the whole time of her desolation shall she ‖ Or keep sabbath rest until the full term of seventy years CHAP. II. 1 Cyrus is moved by God to build the temple 5 and giveth leave to the Jews to return and contribute to it 11 He delivereth again the vessels which had been taken thence 25 Artaxerxes forbiddeth the Jews to build any more IN the * 2 Chr. 36.22 Ezra 1.1 c. first year of Cyrus king of the Persians that the word of the Lord might be accomplished that he had promised by the mouth of Jeremy 2 The Lord raised up the spirit of Cyrus the king of the Persians and he made proclamation through all his kingdom and also by writing 3 Saying Thus saith Cyrus king of the Persians The Lord of Israel the most high Lord hath made me king of the whole world 4 And commanded me to build him an house at Jerusalem in Jewry 5 If therefore there be any of you that are of his people let the Lord even his Lord be with him and let him go up to Jerusalem that is in Judea and build the house of the Lord of Israel for ‖ Or this he is the Lord that dwelleth in Jerusalem 6 Whosoever then dwell in the places about let them help him those I say that are his neighbours with gold and with silver 7 With gifts with horses and with cattel and other
things which have been set forth by vow for the temple of the Lord at Jerusalem 8 ¶ Then the chief of the families of Judea and of the tribes of Benjamin stood up the priests also and the Levites and all they whose minde the Lord had moved to go up and to build an house for the Lord at Jerusalem 9 And they that dwelt round about them and helped them in all things with silver and gold with †Heb. substance Ezra 1.6 horses and cattel and with very many free gifts of a great number whose minds were stirred up thereto 10 King Cyrus also brought forth the holy vessels which Nebuchodonosor had carried away from Jerusalem and had set up in his temple of idols 11 Now when Cyrus kâ—ng of the Persians had brought them forth he delivered them to Mithridates his treasurer 12 And by him they were delivered to †Gr. Shashbazar the first part of the word is acrruptly joynes to the word going before Ezra 1.8 Sanabassar the governour of Judea 13 And this was the number of them A thousand golden cups and a thousand of silver †Heb. knioâ—â— Ezra 1.9 censers of silver twenty nine vials of gold thirty and of silver * Ezr. 1.10 but four hundred and ten two thousand four hundred and ten and a thousand other vessels 14 So all the vessels of gold and of silver which were carried away were * Ezr. 1.11 but five thousand four hundred five thousand four hundred threescore and nine 15 These were brought back by Sanabassar together with them of the captivity from Babylon to Jerusalem 16 * Ezra 4.7 But in the time of Artaxerxes king of the Persians Belemus and Mithridates and Tabellius and †Babumus and the name which followeth is but an epithete to the former Ezra 4.9 Rathumus Beeltethmus and †Shimshai Ezra 4.8 Semellius the secretary with others that were in commission with them dwelling in Samaria and other places wrote unto him against them that dwelt in Judea and Jerusalem these letters following 17 To king Artaxerxes our lord thy servants Rathumus the story-writer and Semellius the scribe and the rest of their counsel and the judges that are in Celosyria and Phenice 18 Be it now known to the lord the king that the Jews that are come up from you to us being come into Jerusalem that rebellious and wicked city do build the market-places and repair the walls of it and do lay the foundation of the temple 19 Now if this city and the walls thereof be made up again they will not onely refuse to give tribute but also rebel against kings 20 And forasmuch as the things pertaining to the temple are now in hand we think it meet not to neglect such a matter 21 But to speak unto our lord the king to the intent that if it be thy pleasure it may be sought out in the books of thy fathers 22 And thou shalt finde in the chronicles what is written concerning these things and shalt understand that that city was rebellious troubling both kings and cities 23 And that the Jews were rebellious and raised always wars therein for the which cause even this city was made desolate 24 Wherefore now we do declare unto thee O lord the king that if this city be built again and the walls thereof set up anew thou shalt from henceforth have no passage into Celosyria and Phenice 25 Then the king wrote back again to Rathumus the story-writer to Beeltethmus to Semellius the scribe and to the rest that were in commission and dwellers in Samaria and Syria and Phenice after this manner 26 I have read the epistle which ye have sent unto me therefore I commanded to make diligent search and it hath been found that that city was from the beginning practising against kings 27 And the men therein were given to rebellion and war and that mighty kings and fierce were in Jerusalem who reigned and exacted tributes in Celosyria and Phenice 28 Now therefore I have commanded to hinder those men from building the city and heed to be taken that there be no more done in it 29 And that those wicked workers proceed no further to the annoyance of kings 30 Then king Artaxerxes his letters being read Rathumus and Semellius the scribe and the rest that were in commission with them removing in haste towards Jerusalem with a troup of hors-men and ‖ Or a great number of souldiers a multitude of people in battel aray began to hinder the builders and the building of the temple in Jerusalem ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of the Persians CHAP. III. 4. Three strive to excel each other in wise speeches 9 They refer themselves to the judgement of the king 18 The first declareth the strength of wine NOw when Darius reigned he made a great feast unto all his subjects and unto all his houshold and unto all the princes of Media and Persia 2 And to all the governours and captains and lieutenants that were under him from India unto Ethiopia of an hundred twenty and seven provinces 3 And when they had eaten and drunken and being satisfied were gone home then Darius the king went into his bed-chamber and stept and soon after awaked 4 Then three young men that were of the guard that kept the kings body spake one to another 5 Let every one of us speak a sentence he that shall overcome and whole sentence shall seem wiser then the others unto him shall the king Darius give great gifts and great things in token of victory 6 As to be clothed in purple to drink in gold and to sleep upon gold and a chariot with bridles of gold and an head-tire of fine linen and a chain about his neck 7 And he shall sit next to Darius because of his wisdom and shall be called Darius his cousin 8 And then every one wrote his sentence sealed it and laid it under king Darius his pillow 9 And said that when the king is risen some will give him the writings and of whose side the king and the three princes of Persia shall judge that his sentence is the wisest to him shall the victory be given as was appointed 10 The first wrote Wine is the strongest 11 The second wrote The king is the strongest 12 The third wrote Women are strongest but above all things truth beareth away the victory 13 ¶ Now when the king was risen up they took their writings and delivered them unto him and so he read them 14 And sending forth he called all the princes of Persia and Media and the governours and the captains and the lieutenants and the chief officers 15 And sat him down in the ‖ Or counsel royal seat of judgement and the writings were read before them 16 And he said Call the young men and they shall declare their own sentences So they were called and came in 17 And he said unto them Declare
of Israel which is in heaven he gave them over into the power of Nebuchodonosor king of Babylon of the Caldees 16 Who pulled down the house and burnt it and carried away the people captives unto Babylon 17 But in the first year that king Cyrus reigned over the countrey of Babylon Cyrus the king wrote to build up this house 18 And the holy vessels of gold and of silver that Nebuchodonosor had carried away out of the house at Jerusalem and had set them in his own temple those Cyrus the king brought forth again out of the temple at Babylon and they were delivered to ‖ Or Zorobabel which is also Sanabassar the ruler so as Zorobabel seemeth to be added to the text Ezra 1.8 Zorobabel and to Sanabassarus the ruler 19 With commandment that he should carry away the same vessels and put them in the temple at Jerusalem and that the temple of the Lord should be built in his place 20 Then the same Sanabassarus being come hither laid the foundations of the house of the Lord at Jerusalem and from that time to this being still a building it is not yet fully ended 21 Now therefore if it seem good unto the king let search be made among the ‖ Or rolls records of king Cyrus 22 And if it be found that the building of the house of the Lord at Jerusalem hath been done with the consent of king Cyrus and if our lord the king be so minded let him signifie unto us thereof 23 Then commanded king Darius to seek among the records at Babylon and so at Echatana the palace which is in the countrey of Media there was found a ‖ Or place roll wherein these things were recorded 24 In the first year of the reign of Cyrus king Cyrus commanded that the house of the Lord at Jerusalem should be built again where they do sacrifice with continual fire 25 Whos 's height shall be sixty cubits and the breadth sixty cubits with three rowes of hewn stones and one row of new wood of that countrey and the expenses thereof to be given out of the house of king Cyrus 26 And that the holy vessels of the house of the Lord both of gold and silver that Nebuchodonosor took out of the house at Jerusalem and brought to Babylon should be restored to the house at Jerusalem and be set in the place where they were before 27 And also he commanded that Sisinnes the governour of Syria and Phenice and Sathrabuzanes and their companions and those which were appointed rulers in Syria and Phenice should be careful not to meddle with the place but suffer Zorobabel the servant of the Lord and governour of Judea and the elders of the Jews to build the house of the Lord in that place 28 I have commanded also to have it built up whole again and that they look diligently to help those that be of the captivity of the Jews till the house of the Lord be finished 29 And out of the tribute of Celosyria and Phenice a portion carefully to be given these men for the sacrifices of the Lord that is to Zorobabel the governour for bullocks and rams and lambs 30 And also corn salt wine and oyl and that continually every year without further question according as the priests that be in Jerusalem shall signifie to be daily spent 31 That ‖ Or drink-offerings offerings may be made to the most high God for the king and for his children and that they may pray for their lives 32 And he commanded that whosoever should transgress yea or make light of any thing afore spoken or written out of his own house should a tree be taken and he thereon be hanged and all his goods seised for the king 33 The Lord therefore whose name is there called upon utterly destroy every king and nation that stretcheth out his hand to hinder or endamage that house of the Lord in Jerusalem 34 I Darius the king have ordained that according unto these things it be done with diligence CHAP. VII 1 Sisinnes and others help forward the building 5 The temple is finished and dedicated 10 The pass-over is kept THen * Ezra 6.13 Sisinnes the governour of Celosyria and Phenice and Sathrabuzanes with their companions following the commandments of king Darius 2 Did very carefully oversee the holy works assisting the ancients of the Jews and governours of the temple 3 And so the holy works prospered when Aggeus and Zacharias the prophets prophesied 4 And they finished these things by the commandment of the Lord God of Israel and with ‖ Or the decrâ—â— the consent of Cyrus Darius and Artaxerxes kings of Persia 5 And thus was the holy house finished in †Heb. the third day Ezra 6.15 the three and twentieth day of the moneth Adar in the sixth year of Darius king of the Persians 6 And the children of Israel the priests and the Levites and other that were of the captivity that were added unto them did according to the things written in the book of Moses 7 And to the dedication of the temple of the Lord they offered an hundred bullocks two hundred rams four hundred lambs 8 And twelve goats for the sin of all Israel according to the number of the ‖ Or tribes chief of the tribes of Israel 9 The priests also and the Levites stood arayed in their vestments according to their †Heb. divisions Ezra 6.18 kindreds in the services of the Lord God of Israel according to the book of Moses and the porters at every gate 10 And the children of Israel ‖ Or with those that c. that were of the captivity held the pass-over the fourteenth day of the first moneth after that the priests and the Levites were sanctified 11 They that were of the captivity were not all sanctified together but the Levites were all sanctified together 12 And so they offered the pass-over for all them of the captivity and for their brethren the priests and for themselves 13 And the children of Israel that came out of the captivity did eat even all they that had separated themselves from the abominations of the people of the land and sought the Lord. 14 And they kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days making merry before the Lord 15 For that he had turned the ‖ Or minde counsel of the king of Assyria towards them to strengthen their hands in the works of the Lord God of Israel CHAP. VIII 1 Esdras bringeth the kings commistion to build 8 The copy of it 28 He declareth the names and number of those that came with him 61 and his journey 71 He lamenteth the sins of his people 96 and sweareth the priests to put away their strange wives ANd after these things when Artaxerxes the king of the Persians reigned came Esdras the son of Saraias the son of ‖ Aâ—ariat Ezerias the son of Helchiah the son of Salum 2 The son of
praise him therewith 23 Draw near unto me you unlearned and dwell in the house of learning 24 Wherefore are you slow and what say you of these things seeing your souls are very thirsty 25 I opened my mouth and said * Isai 55.1 Buy her for your selves without money 26 Put your neck under the yoke and let your soul receive instruction she is hard at hand to finde 27 * Chap. 6.19 Behold with your eyes how that I have had but little labour and have gotten unto me much rest 28 Get learning with a great sum of money get much gold by her 29 Let your soul rejoyce in his mercy and be not ashamed of his praise 30 Work your work betimes and in his time he will give you your reward ¶ BARUCH CHAP. I. 1 Baruch wrote a book in Babylon 5 The Jews there wept at the reading of it 7 They send money and the book to the brethren at Jerusalem ANd these are the words of the book which Baruch the son of Nerias the son of Maasias the son of Sedecias the son of Asadias the son of Chelcias wrote in Babylon 2 In the fifth year and in the seventh day of the moneth what time as the Caldeans took Jerusalem and burnt it with fire 3 And Baruch did read the words of this book in the hearing of Jechonias the son of ‖ Or Joacim Joachim king of Juda and in the ears of all the people that came to hear the book 4 And in the hearing of the nobles and of the kings sons and in the hearing of the elders and of all the people from the lowest unto the highest even of all them that dwelt at Babylon by the river Sud 5 Whereupon they wept fasted ‖ Or and vowed vows and prayed before the Lord. 6 They made also a collection of money according to every mans power 7 And they sent it to Jerusalem unto ‖ Or Joacim Joachim the high priest the son of Chescias son of Salom and to the priests and to all the people which were sound with him at Jerusalem 8 At the same time when he received the vessels of the house of the Lord that were carried out of the temple to return them into the land of Juda the tenth day of the moneth Sivan namely silver vessels which Sedecias the son of Josias king of Juda had made 9 After that Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had carried away Jechonias and the princes and the ‖ Or prisoners captives and the mighty men and the people of the land from Jerusalem and brought them unto Babylon 10 And they said behold we have sent you money to buy you burnt-offerings and sin-offerings and incense and prepare ye †Gr corruptly for minâ—ba manna and offer upon the altar of the Lord our God 11 And pray for the life of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon and for the life of Balthalar his son that their days may be upon earth as the days of heaven * meat-offering 12 And the Lord will give us strength and lighten our eyes and we shall live under the shadow of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon and under the shadow of Balthasar his son and we shall serve them many days and finde favour in their sight 13 Pray for us also unto the Lord our God for we have sinned against the Lord our God and unto this day the fury of the Lord and his wrath is not turned from us 14 And ye shall read this book which we have sent unto you to make confession in the house of the Lord upon the feasts and solemn days 15 And ye shall say * Chap. â— 6 To the Lord our God belongeth righteousness but unto us the confusion of faces as it is coms to pass this day unto them of Juda and to the inhabitants of Jerulalem 16 And to our kings and to our princes and to our priests and to our prophets and to our fathers 17 For we have * Dan. 9.5 sinned before the Lord 18 And disobeyed him and have not hearkned unto the voice of the Lord our God to walk in the commandments that he gave us openly 19 Since the day that the Lord brought our forefathers out of the land of Egypt unto this present day we have been disobedient unto the Lord our God and we have been negligent in not hearing his voice 20 * Deut. 28.15 Wherefore the evils cleaved unto us and the curse which the Lord appointed by Moses his servant at the time that he brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt to give us a land that floweth with milk and honey like as it is to see this day 21 Nevertheless we have not hearkned unto the voice of the Lord our God according unto all the words of the prophets whom he sent unto us 22 But every man followed the imagination of his own wicked heart to serve strange gods and to do evil in the sight of the Lord our God CHAP. II. The prayer and confession which the Jews at Babylon made and sent in that book unto the brethreâ—◠〈◊〉 Jerusalem THerefore the Lord hath made good his word which he pronounced against us and against our judges that judged Israel and against our kings and against our princes and against the men of Israel and Juda. 2 To bring upon us great plagues such as never hapned under the whose heaven as it came to pass in Jerusalem according to the things that were written in the law of Moses 3 That a man should * Deut. 28.53 eat the flesh of his own son and the flesh of his own daughter 4 Moreover he hath delivered them to be in subjection to all the kingdoms that are round about us to be as a reproach and desolation among all the people round about where the Lord hath scattered them 5 Thus we †Gr. were beneath and not above were cast down and not exalted becaused we have sinned against the Lord our God and have not been obedient unto his voice 6 * Ch. 1.15 To the Lord our God appertaineth righteousness but unto us and to our fathers open shame as appeareth this day 7 For all these plagues are come upon us which the Lord hath pronounced against us 8 Yet have we not prayed before the Lord that we might turn every one from the imaginations of his wicked heart 9 Wherefore the Lord watched over us for evil and the Lord hath brought it upon us for the Lord is righteous in all his works which he hath commanded us 10 Yet we have not hearkned unto his voice to walk in the commandments of the Lord that he hath set before us 11 * Dan. 9.15 And now O Lord God of Israel that hast brought thy people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and high arm and with signs and with wonders and with great power and hast gotten thy self a name as appeareth this day 12 O Lord our
and joy and honour 17 And in every province and in every city whithersoever the kings commandment and his decree came the Jews had joy and gladness a â—east and a good day and many of the people of the land became Jews for the fear of the Jews fell upon them CHAP. IX 1 The Jews the rulers for fear of Mordecai helping them slay their enemies with the ten sons of Haman 12 Ahasuerus at the request of Esther granteth another day of slaughter and Hamans sons to be hanged 20 The two days of Purim are made festival NOw in the twelfth moneth that is the moneth Adar on the thirteenth day of the lame when the kings commandment and his decree drew near to be put in execution in the day that the enemies of the Jews hoped to have power over them though it was turned to the contrary that the Jews had rule over them that hated them 2 The Jews gathered themselves together in their cities throughout all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus to lay hand on such as sought their hurt and no man could withstand them for the fear of them fell upon all people 3 And all the rulers of the provinces and the lieutenants and the deputies and †Heb. those which did the business that belonged to the king officers of the king helped the Jews because the fear of Mordecai â—ell upon them 4 For Mordecai was great in the kings house and his fame went out throughout all the provinces for this man Mordecai waxed greater and greater 5 Thus the Jews smote all their enemies with the stroke of the sword slaughter destruction and did †Heb. according to their will with they would unto those that hated them 6 And in Shushan the palace the Jews slew destroyed five hundred men 7 And Parshandatha and Dalphon and Aspatha 8 And Poratha and Adalia and Aridatha 9 And Parmashta and Arisai and Aridai and Vajezatha 10 The ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha the enemy of the Jews slew they but on the spoil laid they not their hand 11 On that day the number of those that were slain in Shushan the palace †Heb. came was brought before the king 12 ¶ And the king said unto Esther the queen The Jews have slain and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the palace and the ten sons of Haman what have they done in the rest of the kings provinces now what is thy petition and it shall be granted thee or what is thy request further and it shall be done 13 Then said Esther If it please the king let it be granted to the Jews which are in Shushan to do to morrow also according unto this days decree and †Heb. let men hang. let Hamans ten sons be hanged upon the gallows 14 And the king commanded it so to be done and the decree was given at Shushan and they hanged Hamans ten sons 15 For the Jews that were in Shushan gathered themselves together on the fourteenth day also of the moneth Adar and slew three hundred men at Shushan but on the prey they laid not their hand 16 But the other Jews that were in the kings provinces gathered themselves together and stood for their lives and had rest from their enemies and slew of their foes seventy and five thousand but they laid not their hands on the prey 17 On the thirteenth day of the moneth Adar and on the fourteenth day †Heb. in it of the same rested they and made it a day of feasting and gladness 18 But the Jews that were at Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth day thereof and on the fourteenth thereof and on the fifteenth day of the same they rested made it a day of feasting gladness 19 Therefore the Jews of the villages that dwelt in the unwalled towns made the fourteenth day of the moneth Adar a day of gladness and feasting and a good day and of sending portions one to another 20 ¶ And Mordecai wrote these things sent letters unto all the Jews that were in all the provinces of the king Ahasuerus both nigh and far 21 To stablish this among them that they should keep the fourteenth day of the moneth Adar and the fifteenth day of the same yearly 22 As the days wherein the Jews rested from their enemies and the moneth which was turned unto them from sorrow to joy and from mourning into a good day that they should make them days of feasting and joy of sending portions one to another gifts to the poor 23 And the Jews undertook to do as they had begun and as Mordecai had written unto them 24 Because Haman the son of Hammedatha the Agagite the enemy of all the Jews had devised against the Jews to destroy them and had cast Pur that is the lot to †Heb. crush consume them and to destroy them 25 But †Heb. when she came when Esther came before the king he commanded by letters that his wicked device which he devised against the Jews should return upon his own head and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows 26 Wherefore they called these days Purim after the name of ‖ That is lot Pur therefore for all the words of this letter and of that which they had seen concerning this matter and which had come unto them 27 The Jews ordained and took upon them and upon their seed and upon all such as joyned themselves unto them so as it should not †Heb. pass fail that they would keep those two days according to their writing and according to their appointed time every year 28 And that these days should be remembred and kept throughout every generation every family every province and every city and that these days of Purim should not †Heb. pass fail from among the Jews nor the memorial of them †Heb. be ended perish from their seed 29 Then Esther the queen the daughter of Abihail Mordecai the Jew wrote with †Heb. all strength all authority to confirm this second letter of Purim 30 And he sent the letters unto all the Jews to the hundred twenty and seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus with words of peace and truth 31 To confirm these days of Purim in their times appointed according as Mordecai the Jew and Esther the queen had enjoyned them and as they had decreed †Heb. for their souls for themselves and for their seed the matters of the fastings and their crie 32 And the decree of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim and it was written in the book CHAP. X. 1 Ahasuerus his greatness 3 Mordecai's advancement ANd the king Ahasuerus laid a tribute upon the land and upon the tiles of the sea 2 And all the acts of his power of his might the declaration of the greatness of Mordecai whereunto the king †Heb. made him great advanced him
