and_o merciful_a etc._n etc._n or_o that_o tell_v you_o he_o be_v light_a he_o be_v love_n he_o be_v god_n only_o wise_a he_o be_v the_o almighty_a god_n all-sufficient_a he_o be_v all_o in_o all_o and_o that_o the_o heaven_n and_o heaven_n of_o heaven_n can_v contain_v he_o or_o wherein_o you_o find_v he_o admire_v as_o glorious_a in_o holiness_n or_o that_o say_v he_o be_v what_o he_o be_v that_o he_o be_v the_o first_o and_o the_o last_o the_o alpha_n and_o omega_n etc._n etc._n labour_v to_o fix_v the_o apprehension_n and_o true_a import_n of_o all_o such_o expression_n deep_a in_o your_o mind_n that_o you_o may_v have_v a_o entire_a and_o well-formed_a representation_n of_o he_o before_o you_o unto_o which_o you_o may_v upon_o all_o occasion_n have_v recourse_n and_o not_o be_v at_o a_o loss_n every_o time_n you_o be_v to_o apply_v yourselves_o to_o any_o converse_n with_o he_o what_o or_o how_o to_o conceive_v of_o he_o and_o because_o mere_a word_n though_o they_o may_v furnish_v you_o with_o a_o more_o full_a and_o comprehensive_a notion_n of_o he_o yet_o it_o may_v be_v not_o with_o so_o lively_a a_o one_o or_o that_o you_o find_v so_o powerful_o strike_v your_o heart_n compare_v with_o that_o account_n his_o word_n give_v you_o of_o he_o the_o work_n which_o your_o eye_n may_v daily_o behold_v and_o which_o you_o be_v assure_v be_v wrought_v and_o do_v by_o he_o to_o read_v or_o hear_v of_o his_o wisdom_n power_n goodness_n etc._n etc._n and_o then_o to_o have_v the_o visible_a effect_n within_o your_o constant_a view_n that_o so_o full_o correspond_v to_o what_o his_o word_n have_v say_v of_o he_o and_o demonstrate_v he_o to_o be_v what_o you_o be_v tell_v he_o be_v how_o mighty_a a_o confirmation_n do_v this_o carry_v with_o it_o you_o may_v behold_v somewhat_o of_o he_o in_o every_o creature_n all_o his_o work_n do_v not_o only_o represent_v but_o even_o praise_n and_o commend_v he_o to_o you_o above_o all_o since_o he_o be_v only_o to_o be_v see_v in_o his_o own_o light_n pray_v earnest_o and_o continual_o to_o the_o god_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n 1._o the_o father_n of_o glory_n that_o he_o will_v give_v you_o the_o spirit_n of_o wisdom_n and_o revelation_n in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o he_o from_o such_o as_o so_o desire_v to_o know_v he_o he_o will_v not_o conceal_v himself_o this_o be_v your_o more_o direct_a follow_v on_o to_o know_v the_o lord_n 6._o in_o which_o case_n he_o have_v say_v you_o shall_v know_v and_o that_o his_o go_v forth_o shall_v be_v prepare_v as_o the_o morning_n by_o your_o crave_v look_n and_o the_o expect_a posture_n of_o your_o wait_a eye_n you_o draw_v forth_o and_o invite_v his_o enlighten_v communication_n which_o do_v but_o wait_v for_o a_o invitation_n for_o it_o be_v most_o reasonable_a you_o shall_v feel_v your_o want_n and_o express_v your_o desire_n of_o what_o be_v so_o precious_a before_o you_o find_v it_o hereby_o you_o put_v yourselves_o amid_o the_o glorious_a beam_n of_o his_o vital_a pleasant_a light_n or_o do_v open_v your_o soul_n to_o admit_v and_o let_v it_o in_o upon_o you_o who_o when_o he_o find_v it_o be_v with_o you_o a_o desire_a thing_n and_o long_v for_o take_v more_o pleasure_n in_o impart_v than_o you_o can_v pain_n in_o seek_v or_o pleasure_n in_o receive_v it_o nor_o yet_o when_o you_o have_v thus_o attain_v to_o some_o competent_a measure_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n be_v you_o to_o satisfy_v yourselves_o that_o now_o you_o be_v not_o altogether_o ignorant_a but_o 3._o employ_v your_o knowledge_n in_o frequent_a and_o solemn_a think_v on_o he_o which_o be_v one_o and_o the_o next_o end_n of_o that_o knowledge_n and_o a_o further_a great_a mean_n to_o your_o delight_v in_o he_o your_o knowledge_n of_o god_n signify_v little_a to_o this_o purpose_n or_o any_o other_o if_o as_o it_o give_v you_o the_o advantage_n of_o have_v frequent_a actual_a thought_n of_o he_o it_o be_v not_o use_v to_o this_o end_n not_o have_v this_o knowledge_n when_o you_o will_v set_v yourselves_o serious_o to_o think_v on_o god_n you_o be_v lose_v in_o the_o dark_a and_o know_v not_o which_o way_n to_o turn_v yourselves_o and_o have_v it_o you_o will_v be_v as_o much_o stranger_n to_o delight_n in_o he_o if_o you_o let_v your_o knowledge_n lie_v bind_v up_o in_o dead_a and_o spiritless_a notion_n and_o labour_v not_o to_o have_v it_o turn_v into_o active_a life_n and_o fervent_a love_n by_o the_o agitation_n of_o your_o work_a thought_n by_o your_o muse_v this_o fire_n must_v be_v kindle_v do_v you_o suppose_v it_o possible_a to_o delight_v in_o god_n and_o not_o think_v of_o he_o if_o god_n be_v the_o solace_n and_o joy_n of_o your_o soul_n sure_o it_o must_v be_v god_n remember_v and_o mind_v much_o not_o neglect_v and_o forget_v my_o soul_n say_v the_o psalmist_n shall_v be_v satisfy_v as_o with_o marrow_n and_o fatness_n 63._o and_o my_o mouth_n shall_v praise_v thou_o with_o joyful_a lip_n when_o i_o remember_v thou_o on_o my_o bed_n and_o meditate_v on_o thou_o in_o the_o night-watche_n 34._o and_o he_o at_o the_o same_o time_n say_v his_o meditation_n of_o he_o shall_v be_v sweet_a when_o he_o say_v he_o will_v be_v glad_a in_o the_o lord_n it_o be_v not_o a_o brutal_a delight_n you_o be_v here_o invite_v to_o even_o such_o creature_n have_v their_o pleasure_n also_o and_o do_v need_v thereto_o beside_o a_o suitable_a object_n only_o the_o help_n and_o ministry_n of_o their_o sense_n your_o delight_n in_o god_n can_v find_v no_o way_n into_o your_o heart_n but_o by_o the_o introduction_n of_o your_o exercise_v mind_n there_o the_o matter_n must_v be_v prepare_v and_o form_v by_o which_o your_o delight_n be_v to_o be_v nourish_v &_o maintain_v hereto_o than_o you_o must_v apply_v yourselves_o with_o design_n and_o with_o serious_a diligence_n and_o take_v pain_n with_o your_o recoil_v thought_n do_v not_o make_v that_o fulsome_a pretence_n to_o excuse_v your_o slothful_a neglect_n that_o you_o can_v command_v your_o own_o thought_n the_o thing_n itself_o be_v unquestionable_o true_a and_o that_o you_o be_v not_o of_o yourselves_o sufficient_a to_o think_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a as_o of_o yourselves_o and_o so_o you_o may_v true_o enough_o say_v that_o you_o can_v think_v any_o thought_n at_o all_o without_o god_n or_o so_o much_o as_o draw_v a_o breath_n only_o as_o beside_o your_o natural_a dependence_n on_o god_n for_o the_o support_n of_o your_o natural_a life_n and_o be_v there_o must_v be_v that_o course_n take_v and_o those_o thing_n do_v by_o which_o in_o a_o orderly_a course_n of_o providence_n you_o may_v live_v so_o for_o the_o maintain_n of_o your_o spiritual_a life_n which_o very_o much_o stand_v in_o delight_n and_o joy_n in_o god_n you_o must_v join_v a_o spiritual_a dependence_n for_o that_o special_a influence_n and_o concurrence_n which_o be_v necessary_a hereto_o with_o the_o do_v of_o such_o thing_n as_o by_o god_n appointment_n and_o prescription_n be_v to_o serve_v this_o end_n they_o who_o complain_v therefore_o they_o can_v attain_v to_o it_o to_o delight_v in_o god_n or_o their_o delight_n in_o he_o be_v faint_a and_o languish_a while_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n they_o use_v no_o endeavour_n to_o bend_v and_o direct_v their_o thought_n towards_o he_o do_v make_v as_o idle_a a_o complaint_n as_o he_o that_o shall_v say_v he_o be_v in_o a_o miserable_a strave_a condition_n and_o nothing_o nourish_v he_o who_o want_v nothing_o suitable_a for_o he_o be_v so_o wretched_o slothful_a that_o he_o will_v be_v at_o no_o pain_n to_o prepare_v or_o so_o much_o as_o eat_v and_o chew_v his_o own_o necessary_a food_n you_o may_v not_o imagine_v you_o have_v all_o that_o be_v needful_a for_o the_o well-governing_a of_o your_o spirit_n in_o your_o own_o hand_n and_o power_n nor_o ought_v you_o therefore_o to_o think_v that_o what_o be_v simple_o needful_a be_v not_o to_o be_v have_v god_n be_v not_o behindhand_o with_o you_o he_o be_v no_o such_o hard_a taskmaster_n as_o to_o require_v brick_n and_o allow_v no_o straw_n but_o may_v most_o righteous_o say_v you_o be_v idle_a and_o do_v therefore_o only_o complain_v like_o the_o sluggard_n in_o his_o bed_n who_o hand_n can_v endure_v to_o labour_v you_o dare_v not_o deliberate_o go_v to_o god_n and_o tell_v he_o you_o do_v all_o you_o can_v
as_o he_o be_v our_o ruler_n and_o be_v therein_o our_o ruler_n as_o he_o propose_v to_o we_o benefit_n which_o he_o thereby_o bind_v we_o to_o accept_v for_o even_o his_o invitation_n and_o offer_n be_v also_o law_n and_o formal_a bond_n of_o duty_n upon_o we_o yea_o and_o even_o the_o act_n of_o delight_n itself_o pitch_v upon_o he_o be_v a_o act_n of_o homage_n as_o there_o will_v be_v occasion_n hereafter_o to_o take_v notice_n wherefore_o it_o will_v be_v fit_a to_o steer_v a_o large_a course_n than_o mere_o to_o consider_v he_o as_o a_o good_a commensurate_n to_o our_o partial_a appetite_n which_o be_v apt_a to_o prescribe_v to_o and_o limit_v our_o apprehension_n to_o this_o or_o that_o particular_a sort_n of_o good_a and_o tincture_n they_o with_o such_o a_o notion_n of_o delight_n as_o which_o if_o it_o be_v not_o false_a and_o gross_o carnal_a may_v yet_o be_v much_o too_o narrow_a and_o unproportionable_a to_o the_o universal_a all-comprehending_a good_a and_o though_o we_o shall_v not_o here_o go_v beyond_o the_o compass_n of_o delectable_a good_a yet_o as_o there_o be_v no_o good_a true_o so_o call_v which_o be_v not_o in_o or_o from_o the_o first_o goodness_n so_o indeed_o nor_o be_v there_o any_o capable_a of_o be_v gather_v up_o into_o that_o sum_n which_o be_v not_o delectable_a nor_o therefore_o can_v the_o usual_a distribution_n of_o goodness_n into_o profitable_a honest_a and_o pleasant_a bear_v a_o strict_a test_n only_o the_o false_a relish_v of_o vitiate_a appetite_n in_o this_o corrupt_a state_n of_o man_n have_v give_v ground_n for_o it_o otherwise_o to_o a_o mind_n and_o will_n that_o be_v not_o distemper_v the_o account_n will_v be_v much_o otherwise_o to_o a_o prudent_a mind_n profitable_a good_a will_v be_v pleasant_a even_o as_o it_o be_v profitable_a to_o a_o just_a and_o generous_a mind_n honest_a comely_a good_a will_v be_v pleasant_a even_o as_o it_o be_v honest_a nor_o will_v there_o need_v another_o distinction_n but_o into_o the_o goodness_n of_o the_o end_n which_o be_v pleasant_a for_o itself_o and_o the_o goodness_n of_o the_o mean_n which_o be_v pleasant_a as_o it_o be_v honest_o and_o decent_o profitable_a and_o otherwise_o it_o can_v be_v thereunto_o that_o we_o may_v here_o therefore_o with_o the_o more_o advantage_n state_n the_o delectable_a good_a we_o be_v now_o to_o consider_v it_o will_v be_v requisite_a to_o promise_v two_o thing_n 1._o that_o all_o delightful_a enjoyment_n of_o god_n suppose_v some_o communication_n from_o he_o nothing_o can_v delight_v we_o or_o be_v enjoy_v by_o we_o whereof_o we_o do_v not_o some_o way_n or_o by_o some_o faculty_n or_o other_o partake_v somewhat_o either_o by_o our_o external_a sense_n sensitive_a appetite_n fancy_n memory_n mind_n will_n and_o either_o in_o a_o high_a or_o low_a degree_n for_o a_o long_o or_o a_o short_a time_n according_a as_o the_o delight_n be_v for_o kind_n degree_n or_o continuance_n which_o be_v take_v therein_o this_o be_v plain_a in_o itself_o and_o in_o the_o present_a case_n therefore_o of_o delight_v in_o god_n or_o enjoy_v he_o some_o communication_n or_o participation_n there_o must_v be_v one_o way_n or_o other_o according_a as_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o he_o be_v and_o as_o the_o case_n with_o man_n now_o be_v it_o be_v necessary_a he_o do_v with_o clear_a and_o the_o most_o penetrative_a light_n and_o power_n come_v in_o upon_o his_o mind_n and_o heart_n scatter_v darkness_n remove_v prejudice_n abolish_v former_a relish_v transfuse_v his_o own_o sweet_a savour_n through_o the_o soul_n proportionable_o therefore_o to_o what_o be_v to_o be_v do_v he_o communicate_v himself_o as_o the_o event_n constant_o show_v with_o all_o they_o that_o be_v ever_o bring_v to_o any_o real_a enjoyment_n of_o he_o for_o we_o plain_o see_v that_o the_o same_o divine_a communication_n which_o be_v receive_v do_v delight_n and_o satisfy_v do_v also_o procure_v that_o it_o may_v be_v desire_v and_o receive_v make_v its_o own_o way_n attempter_n and_o frame_n the_o soul_n to_o itself_o and_o give_v it_o the_o sweet_a relish_n and_o savour_v thereof_o wherein_o god_n be_v actual_o enjoy_v 2._o that_o however_o god_n himself_o be_v true_o say_v to_o be_v enjoy_v or_o delight_v in_o by_o holy_a soul_n yet_o this_o communication_n be_v also_o a_o sort_n of_o mediate_a object_n of_o this_o delight_n or_o enjoyment_n these_o thing_n be_v forelaid_a it_o be_v now_o needful_a to_o to_o inquire_v somewhat_o more_o distinct_o what_o that_o communication_n or_o communicable_a good_a be_v which_o be_v the_o immediate_a matter_n of_o proper_a spiritual_a enjoyment_n unto_o holy_a man_n in_o this_o world_n because_o many_o have_v that_o phrase_n of_o speech_n enjoy_v god_n often_o in_o their_o mouth_n that_o well_o understand_v not_o what_o they_o mean_v by_o it_o yea_o even_o divers_a of_o they_o that_o have_v real_a enjoyment_n of_o he_o unto_o who_o with_o god_n promise_n and_o precept_n the_o rule_n by_o which_o he_o import_v and_o according_a whereto_o man_n be_v to_o expect_v his_o gracious_a influence_n be_v capable_a of_o avow_v it_o rational_o to_o be_v some_o very_a substantial_a thing_n they_o have_v have_v the_o enjoyment_n of_o the_o sobriety_n of_o their_o spirit_n the_o regularity_n of_o their_o work_n their_o gracious_a composure_n the_o meekness_n humility_n denial_n of_o self_n the_o sensible_a refresh_n the_o mighty_a strength_n and_o vigour_n which_o have_v accompany_v such_o enjoyment_n sufficient_o prove_v to_o they_o that_o they_o do_v not_o hug_v a_o empty_a cloud_n or_o embrace_v a_o shadow_n under_o the_o name_n of_o enjoy_v god_n such_o expression_n as_o we_o find_v in_o the_o book_n of_o psalm_n the_o 16._o and_o many_o other_o with_o sundry_a part_n of_o scripture_n beside_o leave_v we_o not_o without_o instance_n that_o import_n nothing_o like_o flashy_a and_o flaunt_a bombast_n no_o appearance_n of_o affectation_n no_o pompous_a show_n of_o vainglory_n no_o semblance_n of_o swell_a word_n of_o vanity_n but_o which_o discover_v a_o most_o equal_a orderly_o well-poysed_a temper_n of_o mind_n in_o conjunction_n with_o the_o high_a delight_n and_o well-pleasedness_a in_o god_n that_o rich_a and_o unimitable_a fullness_n of_o live_a sense_n can_v not_o but_o be_v from_o the_o apprehension_n of_o a_o real_a somewhat_o and_o that_o of_o a_o most_o excellent_a nature_n and_o kind_n whatsoever_o be_v the_o notion_n that_o may_v be_v most_o fit_o put_v upon_o it_o nor_o yet_o be_v it_o the_o mere_a essence_n of_o god_n which_o man_n can_v be_v say_v to_o enjoy_v for_o that_o be_v not_o communicate_v nor_o communicable_a enjoyment_n suppose_v possession_n but_o it_o will_v be_v a_o himself_o so_o that_o our_o inclination_n be_v in_o this_o case_n expressive_a of_o his_o will_n but_o which_o be_v indeed_o the_o very_a reason_n of_o that_o for_o we_o must_v conceive_v the_o
