A64939 A review and examination of a book bearing the title of The history of the indulgence wherein the lawfulness of the acceptance of the peaceable exercise of the ministry granted by the Acts of the magistrates indulgence is demonstrated, contrary objections answered, and the vindication of such as withdraw from hearing indulged ministers is confuted : to which is added a survey of the mischievous absurdities of the late bond and Sanquhair declaration. consider_v how_o to_o deliver_v the_o church_n from_o this_o evil_a and_o their_o brethren_n out_o of_o the_o snare_n and_o themselves_o from_o give_v this_o evil_a any_o interpretatite_n countenance_n withal_o that_o they_o will_v henceforth_o appear_v more_o friendly_a towards_o the_o real_a lover_n of_o they_o and_o the_o cause_n it_o be_v needless_a to_o make_v any_o answer_n to_o this_o but_o that_o i_o see_v no_o appearance_n that_o this_o history_n be_v like_a to_o take_v any_o of_o the_o indulge_v minister_n off_o upon_o the_o contrary_a there_o be_v so_o many_o false_a aspersion_n and_o uncharitable_a wrestle_n and_o so_o much_o bitterness_n that_o it_o make_v even_o indifferent_a person_n suspect_v his_o cause_n bad_a which_o be_v manage_v by_o so_o ill_a mean_n and_o method_n as_o for_o those_o lover_n of_o the_o non-indulged_n and_o the_o cause_n who_o he_o design_n holder_n fast_n of_o their_o integrity_n in_o who_o he_o seem_v afterward_o to_o grant_v that_o there_o be_v excess_n he_o mean_v i_o suppose_v the_o young_a man_n of_o who_o he_o speak_v before_o and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o other_o of_o his_o way_n i_o like_v well_o of_o friendliness_n and_o of_o show_v of_o all_o meekness_n to_o all_o man_n but_o those_o who_o he_o seem_v to_o mean_v have_v give_v no_o great_a evidence_n that_o they_o be_v lover_n of_o the_o cause_n if_o by_o the_o cause_n he_o mean_v presbytery_n for_o their_o way_n be_v direct_o destructive_a to_o the_o way_n of_o presbyterian_a government_n for_o they_o will_v not_o and_o think_v they_o shall_v not_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o minister_n and_o their_o work_n be_v to_o kindle_v the_o fire_n of_o contention_n if_o he_o and_o the_o author_n of_o the_o history_n have_v have_v as_o much_o charity_n for_o the_o indulge_v minister_n as_o they_o have_v for_o those_o young_a man_n they_o will_v have_v find_v other_o name_n for_o their_o suppose_a fault_n than_o black_a defection_n and_o betray_v of_o the_o cause_n etc._n etc._n when_o all_o that_o he_o say_v of_o these_o young_a man_n be_v that_o they_o have_v excess_n which_o be_v incident_a to_o the_o zeal_n of_o the_o best_a saint_n out_o of_o heaven_n he_o require_v a_o just_a discountenance_v of_o the_o defection_n of_o the_o indulge_v minister_n but_o he_o say_v these_o young_a man_n ought_v to_o be_v countenance_v cherish_v and_o encourage_v for_o their_o uprightness_n and_o after_o real_a affection_n and_o tenderness_n witness_v to_o they_o then_o to_o proceed_v to_o curb_v or_o cure_v their_o excess_n curb_v it_o seem_v seem_v too_o rash_a a_o word_n and_o therefore_o he_o mollify_v it_o by_o the_o alternative_a of_o cure_v and_o yet_o i_o can_v understand_v how_o he_o come_v to_o condescend_v to_o the_o cure_n of_o their_o excess_n for_o if_o i_o be_v not_o misinform_v he_o and_o the_o author_n of_o the_o history_n commend_v they_o for_o these_o practice_n which_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o their_o great_a excess_n minister_n as_o for_o example_n a_o confident_a assert_v a_o immediate_a call_n from_o god_n to_o preach_v upon_o a_o particular_a text_n in_o a_o particular_a place_n before_o any_o invitation_n from_o the_o people_n or_o minister_n but_o now_o i_o remember_v that_o one_o of_o they_o have_v some_o strange_a enthusiastical_a doctrine_n it_o may_v be_v he_o have_v hear_v some_o such_o thing_n which_o he_o design_n excess_n i_o have_v be_v much_o long_o detain_v in_o review_v this_o epistle_n to_o the_o reader_n than_o i_o design_v for_o i_o real_o design_v to_o have_v make_v my_o observation_n upon_o it_o no_o long_o if_o not_o short_a than_o the_o epistle_n i_o do_v not_o set_v myself_o to_o seek_v out_o all_o that_o may_v have_v be_v except_v against_o but_o only_o take_v notice_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o be_v obvious_a and_o offer_v themselves_o at_o first_o view_n i_o think_v myself_o the_o more_o oblige_v to_o note_v those_o obvious_a error_n which_o i_o find_v in_o it_o both_o for_o the_o people_n sake_n some_o whereof_o i_o hear_v read_v this_o book_n on_o the_o lord_n day_n instead_o of_o the_o bible_n and_o for_o the_o author_n sake_n that_o he_o if_o he_o shall_v see_v what_o be_v write_v may_v see_v himself_o to_o be_v fallible_a and_o that_o he_o may_v be_v better_o advise_v before_o he_o put_v such_o paper_n as_o this_o to_o the_o press_n and_o that_o he_o may_v know_v his_o own_o measure_n and_o not_o look_v on_o himself_o as_o one_o fit_a to_o censure_v the_o generality_n of_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o church_n of_o scotland_n and_o to_o obtrude_v his_o dictate_v upon_o they_o when_o one_o of_o the_o unworthy_a of_o these_o minister_n who_o have_v so_o little_a leisure_n for_o such_o work_n have_v in_o a_o hasty_a glance_a through_o his_o epistle_n observe_v in_o a_o few_o page_n so_o many_o dangerous_a errata_n in_o doctrine_n worship_n and_o christian_a practice_n and_o in_o civil_a and_o ecclesiastical_a government_n i_o come_v now_o to_o the_o history_n of_o the_o indulgence_n i_o have_v not_o so_o much_o leisure_n as_o the_o author_n of_o it_o have_v and_o therefore_o i_o purpose_v not_o to_o follow_v he_o foot_n for_o foot_n as_o that_o will_v be_v tedious_a so_o it_o will_v be_v needless_a see_v the_o author_n serve_v we_o not_o only_o twice_o but_o thrice_o with_o the_o same_o colewort_n occidit_fw-la miseros_fw-la cram_n repetita_fw-la magistros_fw-la i_o look_v for_o a_o state_n of_o the_o question_n but_o in_o vain_a the_o true_a state_n of_o the_o question_n according_a to_o the_o mind_n of_o the_o author_n of_o the_o epistle_n and_o the_o author_n of_o the_o history_n be_v whether_o any_o indulgence_n or_o permission_n though_o it_o be_v for_o every_o minister_n to_o return_v to_o his_o own_o charge_n if_o grant_v by_o the_o present_a magistrate_n can_v be_v make_v use_n of_o both_o these_o author_n be_v for_o the_o negative_a we_o hear_v the_o author_n of_o the_o epistle_n mind_n to_o christian_a prudence_n to_o consider_v whether_o as_o matter_n now_o stand_v the_o lord_n be_v not_o rather_o call_v they_o to_o preach_v his_o name_n on_o the_o mountain_n see_v this_o way_n see_v it_o be_v undeniable_a that_o the_o adversary_n be_v not_o yet_o real_o repent_v of_o their_o opposition_n to_o the_o work_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o that_o any_o such_o permission_n if_o necessity_n that_o put_v prudent_a minister_n and_o christian_n to_o the_o field_n and_o mountain_n because_o they_o be_v there_o most_o free_a from_o hazard_n i_o suppose_v the_o christian_a prudence_n of_o the_o one_o and_o other_o will_v advise_v not_o to_o go_v to_o the_o field_n and_o mountain_n if_o the_o magistrate_n grant_v so_o free_a a_o permission_n as_o he_o there_o suppose_v and_o i_o know_v not_o if_o minister_n and_o people_n can_v expect_v the_o lord_n approbation_n and_o blessing_n if_o needless_o they_o will_v clash_v with_o the_o magistrate_n in_o go_v to_o the_o rule_n intrinsical_o etc._n etc._n it_o be_v strange_a that_o the_o historian_n who_o be_v here_o find_v fault_n with_o the_o indulge_v minister_n word_n as_o a_o disingenuous_a indistinct_a confuse_a cothurnus_fw-la can_v not_o speak_v more_o true_o and_o distinct_o himself_n he_o who_o will_v teach_v other_o to_o speak_v shall_v have_v learn_v his_o grammar_n better_o and_o he_o who_o blame_v honest_a man_n for_o dis-ingenuity_n shall_v not_o have_v endeavour_v to_o put_v a_o lie_n in_o their_o mouth_n and_o that_o even_o in_o the_o form_n of_o speech_n which_o he_o prescribe_v as_o more_o distinct_a he_o shall_v be_v so_o very_o confuse_v be_v a_o very_a strange_a thing_n the_o more_o i_o examine_v the_o historian_n quibbling_n against_o these_o brethren_n word_n before_o the_o council_n i_o think_v the_o more_o of_o these_o brethren_n word_n and_o be_o confirm_v that_o the_o lord_n be_v with_o their_o mouth_n and_o give_v they_o what_o to_o speak_v and_o i_o be_o the_o more_o confirm_v in_o this_o by_o observe_v that_o this_o historian_n can_v not_o mend_v what_o they_o say_v without_o fall_v into_o a_o manifest_a falsehood_n and_o into_o a_o form_n of_o speech_n which_o either_o be_v nonsense_n or_o have_v a_o ill_a sense_n and_o destroy_v itself_o by_o give_v a_o reason_n in_o the_o end_n of_o the_o speech_n for_o refuse_v the_o instruction_n which_o do_v prove_v that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v refuse_v and_o so_o the_o end_n destroy_v the_o beginning_n of_o it_o and_o thus_o the_o integrity_n and_o faithfulness_n of_o these_o minister_n be_v clear_v and_o whether_o or_o not_o all_o the_o cavil_n and_o quibbling_n of_o the_o historian_n against_o their_o acceptance_n of_o the_o peaceable_a exercise_n of_o their_o ministry_n and_o against_o their_o speech_n before_o the_o council_n be_v not_o sufficient_o if_o not_o superabundant_o refute_v i_o leave_v it_o to_o the_o impartial_a judgement_n of_o the_o judicious_a reader_n the_o brother_n who_o have_v answer_v this_o history_n have_v show_v the_o falsehood_n of_o the_o two_o observation_n which_o the_o historian_n make_v pag._n 56._o by_o show_v that_o upon_o the_o call_n of_o the_o congregation_n of_o irwin_n that_o reverend_a brother_n after_o his_o confinement_n be_v change_v by_o the_o council_n upon_o the_o supplication_n of_o the_o say_a congregation_n do_v remove_v to_o irwin_n and_o that_o the_o act_n of_o council_n which_o come_v to_o that_o minister_n hand_n make_v no_o mention_n of_o the_o instruction_n so_o that_o his_o see_v that_o the_o act_n of_o council_n be_v the_o all_o and_o only_a ground_n of_o transportation_n and_o that_o the_o instruction_n always_o go_v with_o the_o indulgence_n be_v two_o other_o of_o his_o false_a vision_n and_o thus_o i_o have_v consider_v all_o the_o historian_n reason_n against_o the_o acceptance_n of_o the_o indulgence_n and_o discover_v their_o unreasonableness_n and_o have_v consider_v his_o answer_n to_o these_o objection_n which_o he_o be_v please_v to_o propose_v to_o himself_o and_o have_v find_v his_o answer_n to_o be_v indeed_o no_o answer_n i_o have_v also_o examine_v all_o his_o quibbling_n against_o the_o speech_n of_o these_o of_o the_o indulge_v minister_n who_o appear_v before_o the_o council_n and_o have_v discover_v how_o vain_a they_o be_v and_o i_o refer_v it_o to_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o judicious_a reader_n if_o i_o have_v pass_v any_o thing_n in_o his_o arguing_n that_o have_v any_o appearance_n or_o shadow_n of_o reason_n i_o be_o so_o far_o from_o apprehend_v that_o the_o judicious_a reader_n will_v censure_v i_o for_o omit_v any_o thing_n which_o deserve_v a_o answer_n that_o upon_o the_o contrary_a i_o fear_v i_o shall_v be_v censure_v by_o the_o judicious_a for_o refute_v many_o thing_n which_o be_v so_o manifest_o false_a that_o they_o do_v not_o deserve_v to_o be_v notice_v i_o shall_v only_o desire_v such_o to_o consider_v that_o many_o thing_n which_o be_v manifest_o false_a may_v appear_v true_a to_o those_o who_o be_v weak_a and_o who_o have_v not_o their_o sense_n exercise_v to_o discern_v both_o good_a and_o evil_n and_o so_o that_o which_o be_v needless_a to_o the_o strong_a may_v be_v necessary_a for_o those_o who_o be_v weak_a it_o remain_v that_o i_o examine_v his_o vindication_n of_o such_o as_o scruple_n to_o hear_v and_o own_o the_o
indulge_v minister_n which_o begin_v pag._n 128._o and_o continue_v to_o the_o end_n of_o his_o book_n he_o make_v some_o fashion_n here_o of_o stare_v a_o question_n 1._o he_o grant_v that_o the_o indulge_v minister_n be_v minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o in_o his_o 28_o question_n which_o be_v as_o vant-courier_n send_v before_o this_o history_n where_o the_o main_a body_n of_o his_o force_n be_v draw_v up_o he_o say_v he_o cheerful_o grant_v they_o to_o be_v minister_n and_o nothing_o doubt_v but_o the_o people_n will_v willing_o hear_v these_o same_o indulge_v man_n if_o they_o will_v relinquish_v the_o indulgence_n and_o go_v to_o the_o field_n and_o preach_v with_o the_o rest_n he_o say_v here_o that_o he_o do_v not_o make_v this_o the_o question_n whether_o or_o not_o these_o indulge_v minister_n be_v true_a minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n or_o aught_o in_o any_o case_n to_o be_v acknowledge_v and_o look_v upon_o as_o such_o 2._o he_o grant_v that_o it_o be_v not_o simple_o unlawful_a to_o hear_v these_o indulge_v in_o his_o 28_o question_n he_o say_v he_o dare_v not_o say_v that_o it_o be_v simple_o unlawful_a to_o hear_v the_o curate_n 3._o he_o grant_v that_o they_o may_v be_v lawful_o hear_v at_o some_o time_n and_o in_o some_o circumstance_n as_o for_o example_n if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o to_o be_v hear_v in_o all_o scotland_n in_o his_o 28_o question_n he_o say_v i_o shall_v ready_o grant_v that_o in_o some_o case_n and_o in_o some_o circumstance_n they_o may_v not_o only_o be_v lawful_o hear_v and_o join_v with_o but_o also_o shall_v and_o ought_v be_v hear_v as_o for_o example_n if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o in_o all_o scotland_n to_o be_v hear_v but_o such_o as_o be_v settle_v by_o the_o council_n order_n and_o i_o will_v say_v he_o yield_v as_o much_o even_o as_o to_o the_o curate_n i_o mean_v such_o of_o they_o as_o be_v not_o open_o flagitious_a and_o profane_a or_o be_v not_o notorious_o ignorant_a if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o in_o all_o scotland_n to_o be_v hear_v the_o reason_n move_v he_o to_o make_v these_o concession_n be_v that_o they_o have_v the_o essential_o of_o the_o ministerial_a office_n and_o so_o their_o ministerial_a act_n be_v valid_a and_o be_v not_o nullity_n for_o so_o say_v he_o if_o they_o be_v not_o minister_n all_o the_o child_n who_o they_o have_v baptise_a be_v yet_o unbaptise_v and_o all_o their_o ministerial_a act_n be_v null_a and_o to_o evite_v this_o absurdity_n he_o will_v not_o say_v that_o they_o be_v not_o minister_n we_o have_v hear_v what_o he_o grant_v let_v we_o hear_v what_o he_o deny_v 1._o he_o deny_v that_o the_o people_n among_o who_o the_o indulge_v minister_n be_v settle_v be_v to_o own_o these_o minister_n as_o their_o minister_n their_o pastor_n or_o overseer_n set_v over_o they_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n 2._o he_o deny_v that_o it_o be_v lawful_a and_o expedient_a to_o hear_v they_o when_o there_o be_v other_o minister_n in_o scotland_n to_o be_v hear_v then_o he_o affirm_v that_o it_o be_v these_o people_n duty_n to_o withdraw_v from_o the_o indulge_v to_o hear_v and_o countenance_v other_o minister_n who_o be_v not_o indulge_v and_o he_o insinuate_v reason_n why_o they_o be_v to_o withdraw_v from_o the_o one_o and_o countenance_v the_o other_o 1._o the_o non-indulged_n preach_v upon_o christ_n call_n but_o the_o indulge_v preach_v not_o upon_o christ_n call_n but_o by_o man_n order_n the_o indulge_v minister_n be_v not_o over_o the_o people_n in_o the_o lord_n be_v not_o set_v over_o they_o to_o be_v their_o pastor_n and_o overseer_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n but_o the_o non-indulged_n be_v over_o they_o in_o the_o lord_n and_o set_v over_o they_o as_o pastor_n and_o overseer_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o non-indulged_n preach_v contrary_a to_o man_n order_n or_o as_o it_o be_v in_o his_o 28_o question_n they_o preach_v upon_o the_o call_n of_o christ_n and_o not_o upon_o the_o warrant_n and_o order_n of_o the_o council_n but_o contrary_a thereto_o but_o the_o indulge_v preach_v not_o contrary_a to_o the_o warrant_n and_o order_n of_o the_o council_n there_o be_v not_o such_o exception_n against_o the_o non-indulged_n as_o there_o be_v against_o the_o indulge_v the_o non-indulged_n be_v own_v and_o countenance_v of_o the_o lord_n in_o a_o remarkable_a and_o wonderful_a manner_n the_o indulge_v be_v not_o so_o countenance_v etc._n etc._n though_o he_o do_v not_o express_o deny_v all_o to_o the_o indulge_v which_o he_o ascribe_v to_o the_o non-indulged_n and_o though_o he_o do_v not_o express_o ascribe_v to_o the_o non-indulged_n what_o he_o deny_v to_o the_o indulge_v yet_o see_v he_o be_v make_v a_o comparison_n to_o show_v the_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o indulge_v and_o not_o indulge_v and_o see_v he_o be_v in_o this_o comparative_a balance_v the_o indulge_v and_o not_o indulge_v whatever_o he_o put_v as_o ponderous_a and_o advantageous_a in_o the_o one_o scale_n he_o must_v keep_v it_o out_o of_o the_o other_o and_o upon_o the_o contrary_a what_o be_v want_v or_o naught_o in_o the_o one_o must_v be_v or_o be_v right_a in_o the_o other_o or_o else_o his_o comparison_n will_v not_o be_v fair_a and_o his_o weight_n and_o balance_n false_a thus_o we_o have_v the_o state_n of_o the_o question_n before_o we_o let_v we_o examine_v how_o it_o stand_v and_o if_o it_o be_v consistent_a with_o the_o historian_n tenet_n 1._o he_o grant_v the_o indulge_v minister_n to_o be_v minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n then_o his_o own_o mouth_n condemn_v he_o for_o if_o they_o be_v minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o have_v not_o renounce_v their_o ministerial_a mission_n and_o their_o dependence_n upon_o christ_n and_o therefore_o the_o historian_n grant_v that_o he_o say_v false_a when_o he_o say_v they_o have_v do_v so_o they_o who_o renounce_v that_o which_o essential_o constitute_v the_o ministerial_a office_n they_o be_v not_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o they_o who_o be_v minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n have_v not_o renounce_v what_o be_v essential_o constitutive_a of_o the_o gospel-ministry_n thus_o the_o historian_n have_v eat_v in_o all_o these_o horrid_a calumny_n of_o this_o nature_n which_o in_o his_o letter_n and_o this_o history_n he_o have_v cast_v upon_o the_o indulge_v minister_n 2._o if_o they_o be_v minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o ought_v to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n but_o this_o historian_n say_v they_o shall_v not_o preach_v for_o he_o say_v none_o shall_v hear_v they_o but_o all_o shall_v withdraw_v from_o they_o and_o thus_o they_o shall_v preach_v the_o gospel_n because_o they_o be_v minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o they_o shall_v not_o preach_v because_o none_o shall_v hear_v they_o and_o minister_n be_v not_o oblige_v to_o preach_v where_o there_o be_v none_o to_o hear_v and_o when_o none_o shall_v hear_v and_o thus_o he_o make_v they_o minister_n and_o no_o minister_n for_o a_o minister_n who_o shall_v preach_v and_o who_o none_o shall_v hear_v be_v a_o minister_n and_o no_o minister_n he_o grant_v that_o the_o ministerial_a act_n which_o they_o have_v do_v be_v valid_a they_o be_v not_o nullity_n but_o if_o this_o historian_n get_v his_o will_n they_o shall_v be_v incapacitate_v to_o baptise_v etc._n etc._n any_o more_o and_o thus_o he_o turn_v they_o into_o mere_a insignificant_a cypher_n the_o only_a comfort_n in_o this_o sad_a case_n be_v that_o if_o they_o will_v but_o come_v out_o of_o the_o kirk_n to_o the_o field_n and_o so_o change_v the_o place_n of_o their_o preach_v they_o shall_v make_v as_o significant_a figure_n as_o the_o non-indulged_n for_o he_o who_o be_v but_o a_o cypher_n in_o the_o kirk_n will_v make_v a_o great_a figure_n in_o the_o field_n though_o he_o stand_v there_o alone_o and_o no_o other_o minister_n be_v with_o he_o this_o be_v a_o new_a arithmetical_a invention_n to_o make_v a_o cypher_n which_o signify_v nothing_o by_o a_o mere_a local_a removal_n to_o become_v a_o very_a significant_a figure_n though_o no_o figure_n be_v prefix_v to_o it_o to_o add_v any_o virtue_n to_o it_o i_o wonder_v whence_o it_o come_v that_o the_o field_n and_o mountain_n in_o scotland_n have_v such_o virtue_n and_o have_v it_o not_o in_o any_o other_o part_n of_o the_o world_n that_o we_o hear_v of_o for_o in_o scotland_n according_a to_o this_o author_n opinion_n a_o minister_n who_o signify_v nothing_o in_o a_o kirk_n where_o the_o magistrate_n allow_v he_o the_o peaceable_a exercise_n of_o his_o ministry_n if_o he_o will_v take_v the_o field_n he_o shall_v not_o only_o be_v a_o man_n a_o minister_n in_o the_o field_n but_o cheerful_o hear_v and_o countenance_v and_o own_a not_o only_o of_o man_n but_o of_o the_o lord_n in_o a_o wonderful_a manner_n and_o the_o blessing_n which_o be_v withhold_v from_o the_o
