the_o case_n of_o the_o sit_v member_n that_o serve_v for_o the_o burrow_n of_o southwark_n the_o election_n begin_v the_o twelve_o day_n of_o january_n 1688_o 9_o and_o upon_o the_o view_n it_o do_v appear_v the_o sit_v member_n have_v much_o the_o great_a number_n but_o in_o regard_n a_o poll_n be_v demand_v the_o bailiff_n immediate_o comply_v with_o it_o and_o be_v prosecute_v persuant_n to_o the_o article_n hereunto_o annex_v the_o petition_n be_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o inhabitant_n of_o southwark_n who_o do_v pay_v scot_n and_o lot_n and_o have_v the_o only_a right_n to_o elect_n etc._n etc._n it_o do_v allow_v that_o the_o bailiff_n have_v the_o right_a of_o inspection_n and_o order_v the_o election_n but_o complain_v that_o the_o bailiff_n suffer_v person_n to_o poll_n who_o have_v no_o right_n and_o hinder_v the_o petitioner_n to_o discover_v they_o by_o remove_v the_o poll_n from_o a_o convenient_a place_n and_o continue_v it_o three_o day_n at_o st._n george_n near_o the_o king_n bench_n and_o marshalsea_n prison_n that_o those_o which_o come_v to_o poll_n for_o the_o person_n nominate_v by_o the_o petitioner_n be_v forcible_o keep_v out_o beat_v and_o wound_v and_o return_v sir_n peter_n rich_a and_o john_n arnold_n esq_n when_o as_o say_v the_o petitioner_n anthony_n bowyer_n and_o edward_n smith_n esquire_n be_v due_o elect_v by_o the_o major_a part_n who_o have_v right_a to_o elect_n etc._n etc._n i_o answer_v to_o this_o disingenuous_a petition_n the_o sit_v member_n doubt_v not_o to_o make_v it_o appear_v that_o all_o the_o matter_n therein_o contain_v be_v false_a and_o untrue_o suggest_v for_o they_o will_v prove_v that_o at_o all_o time_n whensoever_o a_o poll_n be_v take_v the_o burgess_n be_v choose_v by_o the_o inhabitant_n housekeeper_n of_o this_o burrow_n who_o do_v not_o receive_v alm_n of_o the_o respective_a parish_n that_o in_o five_o succeed_a election_n these_o very_a petitioner_n do_v give_v their_o vote_n as_o the_o ancient_a usage_n of_o this_o burrow_n according_a to_o the_o article_n sign_v by_o the_o candidate_n that_o divers_a of_o these_o petitioner_n in_o former_a election_n do_v poll_n for_o sir_n richard_n how_o and_o sir_n peter_n rich_a according_a to_o the_o usage_n now_o practise_v as_o be_v the_o custom_n of_o the_o burrow_n that_o all_o person_n who_o have_v right_a to_o poll_n have_v free_a access_n in_o his_o turn_n to_o the_o poll-table_n where_o all_o necessary_a question_n be_v put_v by_o the_o bailiff_n or_o his_o deputy_n that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o person_n abide_v his_o trade_n and_o what_o sort_n of_o habitation_n he_o have_v before_o he_o declare_v for_o who_o he_o give_v his_o poll._n that_o to_o avoid_v all_o contest_v and_o disturbance_n in_o so_o great_a a_o election_n this_o article_n be_v assent_v and_o agree_v unto_o that_o any_o candidate_n may_v make_v his_o query_n upon_o any_o person_n he_o suspect_v to_o be_v a_o false_a poller_n and_o every_o night_n successive_o before_o the_o book_n be_v close_v copy_n of_o the_o same_o be_v either_o give_v or_o send_v to_o the_o candidate_n on_o each_o side_n to_o inquire_v after_o such_o suspect_a poller_n to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v be_v detect_v and_o disallow_v before_o the_o close_a of_o the_o poll._n that_o in_o all_o former_a election_n where_o a_o poll_n be_v demand_v and_o take_v the_o bailiff_n for_o accommodation_n of_o the_o inhabitant_n who_o be_v distant_a from_o each_o other_o do_v take_v the_o poll_n in_o the_o same_o place_n they_o now_o be_v take_v at_o that_o no_o force_n be_v use_v by_o the_o sit_v member_n or_o their_o agent_n the_o constable_n who_o usual_o attend_v the_o poll_n be_v general_o incline_v to_o favour_v the_o petitioner_n side_n do_v use_n indirect_a mean_n to_o feed_v the_o poll_n with_o their_o party_n thereby_o disencourage_v several_a that_o will_v have_v give_v their_o poll_n for_o arnold_n and_o rich_a to_o decline_v it_o that_o neither_o the_o petitioner_n or_o the_o candidate_n ever_o complain_v of_o any_o irregular_a or_o undue_a practice_n of_o the_o bailiff_n during_o the_o take_n of_o this_o poll_n which_o hold_v six_o day_n until_o the_o book_n be_v cast_v up_o and_o the_o disproportion_n appear_v so_o great_a for_o john_n arnold_n esq_n poll_v 2130_o for_o anthony_n bowyer_n esq_n 1360_o for_o sir_n peter_n richardo_n 1677_o for_o edward_n smith_n esq_n 1526_o so_o mr._n arnold_n have_v more_o vote_n than_o mr._n bowyer_n 770_o more_o than_o mr._n smith_n 604_o sir._n peter_n richardo_n have_v more_o than_o mr._n bowyer_n 317_o more_o than_o mr._n smith_n 151_o and_o whereas_o the_o petition_n be_v say_v to_o be_v in_o behalf_n of_o themselves_o and_o other_o that_o have_v right_a to_o elect._n the_o sit_v member_n believe_v they_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o prove_v that_o some_o of_o the_o petitioner_n go_v from_o house_n to_o house_n to_o get_v hand_n and_o collect_v money_n to_o carry_v on_o this_o petition_n but_o be_v refuse_v by_o some_o person_n that_o poll_v for_o smith_n and_o bower_n declare_v to_o this_o effect_n they_o be_v satisfy_v with_o the_o fairness_n of_o the_o poll._n
