as_o there_o be_v so_o clear_a proof_n that_o some_o of_o the_o psalm_n be_v inspire_v in_o verse_n and_o so_o great_a probability_n the_o rest_n be_v so_o many_o judicious_a expositor_n do_v conclude_v the_o quite_o contrary_a from_o 1_o cor._n 14.26_o where_o psalmestry_n seem_v to_o be_v intend_v as_o one_o of_o those_o extraordinary_a gift_n and_o it_o be_v far_o more_o probable_a that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n by_o enjoin_v the_o sing_n of_o psalm_n hymn_n and_o spiritual_a song_n do_v intend_v to_o rescue_v so_o noble_a a_o thing_n as_o poetry_n from_o its_o wretched_a abuse_n by_o the_o heathen_a priest_n that_o it_o may_v be_v consecrate_v to_o the_o service_n of_o god_n in_o his_o temple_n and_o become_v a_o incentive_a and_o help_v to_o true_a devotion_n so_o that_o our_o way_n of_o use_v psalm_n be_v far_o more_o clear_o of_o god_n appointment_n because_o more_o conformable_a to_o his_o particular_a direction_n for_o sing_v they_o and_o to_o his_o be_v so_o and_o therefore_o the_o bp._n have_v in_o that_o and_o the_o follow_a page_n not_o only_o groundless_o suppose_v the_o true_a sense_n of_o david_n psalm_n when_o turn_v into_o metre_n to_o repeat_v they_o without_o hesitation_n and_o this_o sure_a be_v not_o so_o easy_a a_o matter_n as_o what_o he_o can_v deny_v every_o schoolboy_n to_o be_v capable_a of_o viz._n to_o turn_v over_o the_o leaf_n and_o read_v what_o be_v usual_o in_o a_o fair_a and_o large_a print_n his_o lp._n may_n if_o he_o please_v appeal_v from_o common_a sense_n to_o experience_n but_o by_o all_o that_o i_o have_v yet_o converse_v with_o on_o this_o subject_a his_o assertion_n seem_v as_o strange_a to_o they_o as_o it_o do_v to_o we_o nor_o can_v i_o meet_v with_o any_o of_o these_o vertuoso_n in_o devotion_n that_o pretend_v upon_o any_o experiment_n they_o have_v make_v to_o give_v their_o suffrage_n to_o his_o new_a observation_n we_o do_v not_o indeed_o doubt_v of_o his_o lp_n ability_n but_o he_o must_v allow_v we_o to_o doubt_v of_o those_o of_o the_o body_n of_o the_o inferior_a clergy_n who_o i_o fear_v will_v think_v it_o a_o severe_a imposition_n upon_o they_o if_o their_o diocesan_n shall_v oblige_v they_o to_o the_o frequent_a exercise_n of_o their_o talent_n this_o way_n for_o i_o have_v hear_v several_a clergyman_n of_o no_o mean_a part_n complain_v of_o the_o unhappy_a inability_n for_o free_a prayer_n that_o general_a disuse_n have_v bring_v upon_o they_o and_o i_o believe_v i_o may_v herein_o with_o much_o better_a reason_n appeal_v to_o experience_n but_o since_o his_o lp_n hand_n be_v in_o for_o paradox_n i_o think_v he_o shall_v have_v add_v one_o more_o viz._n that_o it_o be_v manifest_a that_o it_o be_v a_o far_o great_a burden_n for_o the_o clergy_n to_o read_v the_o homily_n of_o the_o church_n or_o other_o man_n sermon_n than_o to_o preach_v sermon_n of_o their_o own_o and_o i_o doubt_v not_o he_o may_v with_o as_o much_o reason_n appeal_v to_o the_o experience_n of_o those_o that_o have_v try_v both_o to_o attest_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o and_o if_o he_o can_v make_v good_a the_o truth_n of_o these_o two_o paradox_n the_o n.c._n minister_n will_v hence_o forward_o pass_v for_o lazy_a drone_n while_o the_o poor_a reader_n of_o the_o church_n be_v account_v the_o true_a labourer_n but_o to_o give_v the_o latter_a their_o due_a the_o most_o of_o they_o take_v too_o much_o pain_n for_o that_o sorry_a hire_n that_o be_v allow_v they_o by_o such_o of_o their_o brethren_n as_o be_v laborious_a enough_o to_o engross_v churchliving_n but_o too_o far_o consult_v their_o ease_n to_o make_v the_o duty_n of_o their_o function_n any_o burden_n to_o '_o they_o last_o for_o his_o request_n to_o the_o dissent_v laiety_n that_o they_o will_v believe_v he_o hearty_o desire_v and_o study_v the_o good_a of_o their_o soul_n i_o hope_v they_o be_v willing_a to_o gratify_v he_o herein_o as_o far_o as_o rational_a charity_n to_o find_v that_o notwithstanding_o all_o his_o profession_n of_o goodwill_n he_o shall_v show_v so_o little_a regard_n to_o that_o not_o only_o in_o a_o continue_a series_n of_o unjust_a accusation_n through_o his_o whole_a book_n but_o especial_o in_o the_o follow_a word_n in_o which_o he_o have_v draw_v up_o a_o comprehensive_a summary_n charge_n sufficient_a to_o render_v they_o odious_a if_o it_o be_v believe_v but_o they_o be_v confident_a too_o apparent_o groundless_a to_o gain_v credit_n with_o any_o that_o will_v pass_v a_o righteous_a and_o impartial_a judgement_n on_o worship_n god_n and_o yet_o hardly_o ever_o see_v any_o thing_n of_o god_n immediate_a appointment_n in_o their_o meeting_n now_o to_o my_o thought_n this_o be_v manifest_o the_o case_n of_o many_o of_o you_o since_o a_o man_n may_v frequent_v some_o meeting_n among_o you_o for_o some_o year_n and_o never_o hear_v a_o prayer_n a_o psalm_n or_o chapter_n which_o have_v be_v immediate_o dictate_v by_o god_n and_o never_o be_v call_v on_o to_o bow_v his_o knee_n to_o god_n or_o see_v either_o minister_n or_o people_n address_v themselves_o to_o he_o in_o that_o humble_a posture_n last_o never_o see_v any_o body_n offer_v to_o administer_v or_o desire_v to_o receive_v the_o food_n of_o life_n in_o the_o lord_n supper_n these_o be_v melancholy_a reflection_n to_o i_o who_o believe_v that_o god_n have_v require_v these_o in_o his_o worship_n and_o therefore_o i_o hope_v you_o will_v take_v it_o in_o good_a part_n that_o i_o endeavour_v to_o restore_v they_o to_o you_o ans_fw-fr if_o the_o case_n of_o the_o dissenter_n be_v true_o such_o as_o the_o bp._n represent_v it_o his_o zeal_n to_o recover_v the_o
we_o must_v do_v it_o on_o the_o uncertain_a credit_n of_o rabbinical_a writer_n who_o testimony_n be_v of_o little_a value_n and_o not_o on_o the_o testimony_n of_o the_o h._n scripture_n yet_o i_o see_v not_o how_o the_o bp._n can_v make_v any_o more_o of_o this_o than_o that_o our_o saviour_n think_v it_o not_o unlawful_a to_o join_v in_o such_o public_a form_n of_o prose-prayer_n but_o it_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n follow_v that_o he_o prefer_v such_o public_a form_n before_o free-prayer_n and_o design_v by_o his_o practice_n to_o recommend_v the_o former_a to_o the_o christian_a church_n to_o the_o exclusion_n of_o the_o latter_a for_o as_o i_o shall_v show_v he_o anon_o there_o be_v strong_a presumption_n to_o the_o contrary_a and_o yet_o unless_o his_o lp._n can_v draw_v this_o inference_n from_o our_o saviour_n and_o the_o apostle_n practice_n i_o see_v little_a service_n it_o can_v do_v he_o nay_o i_o fear_v if_o the_o argument_n from_o our_o saviour_n and_o his_o apostle_n practise_v herein_o be_v urge_v so_o far_o it_o will_v prove_v much_o more_o than_o those_o intend_v who_o use_n it_o for_o it_o will_v prove_v that_o we_o ought_v in_o imitation_n of_o their_o example_n to_o retain_v and_o adhere_v to_o that_o liturgy_n which_o these_o gentleman_n pretend_v the_o jew_n have_v and_o which_o they_o tell_v we_o they_o can_v yet_o produce_v the_o particular_a part_n of_o to_o who_o form_n of_o prayer_n dr._n comber_n tell_v we_o that_o our_o saviour_n add_v he_o and_o be_v herein_o so_o afraid_a of_o innovation_n as_o to_o take_v every_o sentence_n out_o of_o the_o jewish_a form_n then_o in_o use_n 6._o use_n orig._n of_o lis._n p._n 6._o if_o so_o why_o be_v not_o this_o jewish_a liturgy_n still_o use_v by_o we_o if_o we_o must_v have_v a_o stint_a liturgy_n such_o a_o one_o be_v most_o unexceptionable_a as_o we_o be_v sure_a our_o saviour_n approve_v by_o join_v in_o why_o then_o shall_v ordinary_a pastor_n presume_v to_o frame_v liturgys_n of_o their_o own_o and_o use_v that_o liberty_n in_o compose_v they_o which_o our_o saviour_n be_v too_o modest_a to_o allow_v himself_o and_o why_o shall_v they_o impose_v so_o many_o form_n on_o other_o when_o our_o great_a master_n impose_v but_o one_o and_o such_o a_o one_o as_o he_o borrow_a the_o very_a sentence_n of_o from_o the_o form_n then_o public_o use_v so_o that_o these_o gentleman_n shall_v if_o they_o will_v be_v consistent_a with_o themselves_o plead_v for_o lay_v aside_o our_o liturgy_n and_o use_v that_o old_a one_o which_o dr._n lightfoot_n have_v so_o happy_o retrieve_v for_o we_o out_o of_o the_o jewish_a rabbin_n i_o will_v therefore_o advise_v they_o to_o use_v this_o argument_n from_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o jewish_a church_n in_o our_o saviour_n time_n about_o which_o we_o be_v at_o the_o best_a but_o very_o uncertain_a with_o great_a tenderness_n and_o caution_n lest_o they_o overdo_v with_o it_o and_o lest_o the_o jewish_a liturgy_n instead_o of_o under_o prop_v the_o common-prayer-book_n undermine_v and_o throw_v it_o down_o 2._o he_o tell_v we_o p._n 31._o that_o our_o saviour_n have_v put_v this_o matter_n out_o of_o all_o dispute_n with_o impartial_a man_n by_o prescribe_v a_o form_n to_o his_o disciple_n when_o they_o desire_v he_o to_o teach_v they_o to_o pray_v as_o john_n do_v his_o disciple_n for_o we_o answ_n his_o lp._n have_v a_o very_a happy_a faculty_n of_o argue_v matter_n of_o dispute_n before_o he_o state_n they_o for_o indeed_o the_o state_v they_o may_v chance_v to_o spoil_v all_o the_o force_n of_o his_o argument_n and_o therefore_o he_o general_o think_v it_o more_o adviseable_a to_o let_v that_o alone_o he_o tell_v we_o our_o saviour_n have_v put_v this_o matter_n out_o of_o all_o dispute_n with_o impartial_a man_n by_o prescribe_v a_o form_n to_o his_o disciple_n what_o matter_n of_o dispute_n do_v his_o lp._n mean_a be_v it_o whether_o a_o form_n of_o prayer_n be_v lawful_a or_o be_v it_o whether_o our_o saviour_n have_v prescribe_v a_o stint_a liturgy_n to_o the_o christian_a church_n in_o their_o public_a administration_n or_o whether_o he_o have_v commission_v ordinary_a pastor_n to_o prescribe_v and_o impose_v such_o a_o liturgy_n and_o confine_v other_o to_o the_o use_n of_o it_o or_o whether_o he_o in_o general_n enjoin_v we_o to_o pray_v only_o by_o a_o form_n or_o not_o ordinary_o without_o one_o if_o he_o mean_v the_o first_o whether_o a_o form_n of_o prayer_n be_v lawful_a that_o be_v no_o matter_n of_o dispute_n at_o all_o between_o the_o dissenter_n and_o the_o establish_v church_n for_o as_o i_o shall_v show_v he_o anon_o there_o be_v never_o a_o meeting_n in_o which_o they_o do_v not_o use_v one_o and_o there_o be_v many_o in_o which_o this_o particular_a form_n of_o prayer_n be_v constant_o use_v so_o that_o if_o this_o be_v all_o he_o will_v prove_v he_o may_v spare_v his_o labour_n though_o perhaps_o his_o argument_n for_o this_o be_v not_o altogether_o so_o convince_a and_o solid_a as_o he_o imagine_v if_o the_o question_n be_v whether_o our_o saviour_n have_v prescribe_v a_o stint_a liturgy_n to_o the_o christian_a church_n as_o one_o will_v think_v it_o shall_v what_o signify_v his_o prescribe_v this_o single_a form_n to_o the_o proof_n of_o it_o unless_o the_o bp_o think_v our_o liturgy_n shall_v consist_v only_o of_o that_o one_o prayer_n or_o can_v produce_v more_o form_n prescribe_v by_o our_o saviour_n to_o make_v up_o a_o liturgy_n and_o if_o he_o can_v do_v that_o what_o will_v become_v of_o the_o service-book_n what_o have_v we_o to_o do_v with_o that_o human_a invention_n when_o we_o have_v a_o liturgy_n appoint_v and_o compose_v by_o our_o saviour_n himself_o if_o the_o quest_n be_v whether_o our_o saviour_n have_v commission_v the_o ordinary_a pastor_n of_o the_o church_n to_o prescribe_v and_o impose_v public_a form_n what_o do_v all_o he_o here_o allege_v about_o this_o single_a form_n prescribe_v by_o christ_n signify_v to_o prove_v any_o such_o thing_n when_o he_o can_v produce_v no_o such_o commission_n nor_o the_o least_o shadow_n of_o it_o in_o all_o the_o new_a testament_n nay_o when_o the_o rule_n of_o it_o about_o prayer_n seem_v rather_o inconsistent_a with_o any_o such_o commission_n as_o i_o shall_v show_v he_o anon_o if_o the_o quest_n be_v whether_o our_o saviour_n in_o general_n enjoin_v we_o to_o pray_v only_o by_o a_o form_n or_o not_o ordinary_o without_o one_o what_o do_v any_o thing_n his_o lp._n have_v allege_v signify_v to_o the_o right_a determination_n of_o this_o question_n if_o he_o design_v to_o prove_v that_o christ_n by_o prescribe_v this_o form_n have_v enjoin_a in_o general_a our_o pray_v only_o by_o a_o set_v form_n and_o never_o otherwise_o as_o one_o will_v think_v his_o follow_a word_n will_v import_v when_o he_o tell_v we_o that_o our_o saviour_n teach_n they_o be_v not_o by_o direct_v they_o to_o wait_v for_o the_o impulse_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o immediate_a inspiration_n from_o god_n of_o what_o they_o be_v to_o offer_v up_o to_o he_o we_o do_v not_o find_v he_o say_v when_o you_o pray_v speak_v what_o shall_v come_v into_o your_o mind_n or_o what_o shall_v be_v give_v you_o in_o that_o hour_n without_o take_v think_v about_o what_o they_o be_v to_o say_v he_o know_v well_o enough_o his_o argument_n be_v no_o way_n conclusive_a for_o he_o himself_o own_v that_o god_n have_v not_o forbid_v all_o extempore_o prayer_n nay_o own_v that_o some_o occasion_n require_v the_o use_n of_o they_o in_o public_a and_o that_o in_o such_o case_n a_o man_n may_v depend_v on_o the_o assistance_n of_o god_n spirit_n when_o he_o have_v not-time_n to_o reduce_v his_o desire_n into_o form_n before_o he_o offer_v they_o p._n 54_o 55._o he_o can_v therefore_o without_o contradict_v himself_o pretend_v that_o our_o saviour_n by_o prescribe_v this_o form_n intend_v to_o exclude_v all_o extempore_o or_o free_a prayer_n nor_o be_v there_o any_o force_n in_o the_o argument_n to_o prove_v that_o our_o saviour_n intend_v to_o oblige_v we_o ordinary_o to_o pray_v by_o a_o form_n because_o he_o once_o prescribe_v one_o as_o a_o comprehensive_a summary_n of_o our_o desire_n for_o his_o general_a rule_n
and_o so_o strange_o mistake_v the_o remedy_n for_o the_o disease_n i_o confess_v how_o much_o soever_o our_o ear_n may_v itch_v after_o novelty_n and_o variety_n yet_o he_o can_v not_o reasonable_o misunderstand_v it_o but_o i_o wonder_v why_o his_o lp._n shall_v tell_v we_o of_o prayer_n and_o praise_n of_o god_n appointment_n do_v he_o not_o know_v the_o collect_v of_o the_o liturgy_n be_v as_o much_o of_o human_a composure_n as_o our_o free_a prayer_n why_o then_o shall_v they_o be_v any_o more_o compare_v to_o angel_n food_n than_o we_o which_o be_v rather_o more_o agreeable_a to_o scriptural_a precept_n and_o pattern_n nay_o if_o the_o scripture_n read_v be_v sermon_n of_o god_n appointment_n they_o be_v not_o the_o less_o so_o but_o the_o more_o for_o be_v explain_v and_o apply_v as_o appear_v from_o this_o very_a direction_n of_o the_o apostle_n to_o timothy_n to_o preach_v the_o word_n to_o be_v instant_a in_o season_n etc._n etc._n to_o rebuke_n etc._n etc._n i_o shall_v conclude_v what_o relate_v to_o our_o practice_n with_o the_o conclude_a word_n of_o this_o chapter_n of_o the_o bp_n but_o as_o aaron_n to_o please_v the_o israelite_n make_v the_o golden_a calf_n so_o some_o minister_n though_o contrary_a to_o their_o own_o principle_n have_v change_v god_n institution_n to_o please_v their_o people_n and_o leave_v out_o the_o constant_a regular_a read_v god_n word_n because_o their_o people_n grow_v weary_a of_o it_o but_o let_v all_o man_n judge_v who_o behave_v themselves_o most_o like_a the_o faithful_a minister_n of_o christ_n we_o who_o keep_v to_o the_o read_n god_n word_n according_a to_o his_o own_o institution_n whether_o the_o people_n will_v hear_v or_o forbear_v or_o they_o that_o comply_v with_o they_o and_o lay_v aside_o of_o prayer_n at_o all_o but_o only_o of_o praise_n and_o if_o it_o have_v mention_v or_o include_v prayer_n it_o can_v refer_v to_o no_o other_o prayer_n but_o such_o as_o be_v sing_v which_o we_o all_o agree_v must_v be_v set_v form_n and_o these_o psalm_n prayer_n the_o bp._n know_v the_o d_o ssenter_n he_o oppose_v never_o scruple_v for_o they_o be_v useful_a to_o be_v sing_v for_o instruction_n by_o those_o who_o can_v offer_v they_o up_o as_o proper_o a_o prayer_n because_o their_o condition_n and_o circumstance_n be_v no_o way_n like_o the_o psalmist_n when_o he_o compose_v '_o they_o but_o the_o question_n be_v concern_v prayer_n in_o the_o proper_a sense_n such_o as_o be_v not_o song_n but_o compose_v in_o prose_n and_o in_o the_o same_o style_n as_o our_o other_o pattern_n in_o the_o h._n scripture_n and_o these_o instance_n of_o psalm-prayer_n signify_v nothing_o to_o this_o purpose_n nor_o indeed_o do_v we_o among_o all_o the_o instance_n of_o public_a prayer_n record_v after_o the_o time_n of_o the_o psalm_n be_v pen_v find_v one_o of_o these_o psalm-prayer_n use_v but_o on_o the_o contrary_a those_o that_o do_v occur_v be_v plain_o free_a and_o
