oh_o hypocritical_a treacherous_a deceitful_a heart_a generation_n who_o shall_v believe_v they_o to_o be_v messenger_n or_o minister_n of_o god_n that_o have_v no_o more_o stability_n with_o they_o true_o their_o very_a action_n in_o turn_v and_o toss_v and_o wander_v to_o and_o fro_o have_v sufficient_o declare_v they_o to_o be_v without_o any_o true_a foundation_n and_o who_o shall_v conside_fw-la in_o they_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v that_o be_v so_o variable_a have_v we_o not_o ground_n to_o believe_v that_o they_o will_v turn_v to_o the_o old_a mass_n or_o to_o the_o and_o study_v their_o welfare_n and_o safety_n and_o will_v counsel_v they_o for_o their_o establishment_n and_o security_n yet_o they_o be_v a_o treacherous_a generation_n and_o it_o be_v not_o safe_a for_o the_o king_n to_o trust_v then_o for_o they_o have_v a_o end_n unto_o themselves_o in_o most_o or_o all_o that_o they_o do_v and_o their_o own_o interest_n be_v concern_v in_o most_o of_o their_o erterprise_n for_o they_o be_v lover_n of_o their_o own_o self_n and_o of_o pleasure_n more_o than_o of_o god_n as_o the_o king_n and_o his_o council_n may_v easy_o see_v if_o they_o consider_v it_o and_o take_v a_o inspection_n into_o it_o and_o let_v i_o tell_v the_o king_n and_o his_o council_n this_o by_o the_o way_n together_o with_o the_o rest_n of_o thy_o ruler_n oh_o england_n that_o if_o they_o harken_v to_o the_o counsel_n of_o these_o self-seeking_a and_o time_n servingman_n who_o be_v wander_v star_n and_o cloud_n drive_v with_o tempest_n as_o afore_o be_v declare_v i_o say_v if_o they_o follow_v these_o blind_a guide_n and_o hearken_v to_o their_o counsel_n so_o as_o to_o be_v sway_v by_o they_o and_o become_v their_o vassal_n to_o fulfil_v their_o the_o scripture_n that_o he_o will_v praise_v and_o i_o have_v hope_v in_o thy_o word_n be_v his_o hope_n in_o the_o scripture_n or_o in_o christ_n as_o in_o he_o that_o be_v to_o come_v and_o my_o eye_n fail_v for_o thy_o word_n be_v it_o the_o scripture_n that_o his_o eye_n fail_v for_o sure_o no_o the_o scripture_n so_o much_o of_o it_o as_o be_v then_o write_v which_o be_v chief_o the_o book_n of_o moses_n be_v obvious_a enough_o to_o he_o when_o the_o word_n may_v be_v withdraw_v out_o of_o his_o sight_n for_o a_o trial_n unto_o he_o as_o david_n say_v concern_v joseph_n psal_n 105.18_o 19_o who_o foot_n they_o hurt_v with_o fetter_n until_o the_o time_n that_o his_o word_n come_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n try_v he_o and_o who_o dare_v deny_v without_o presumption_n but_o that_o it_o be_v the_o same_o word_n which_o david_n say_v be_v a_o light_n unto_o his_o path_n and_o a_o lamp_n unto_o his_o foot_n so_o that_o all_o j._n n_n s._n tear_v asunder_o the_o scripture_n with_o his_o additional_a imagination_n will_v not_o prove_v that_o it_o be_v the_o scripture_n david_n speak_v of_o in_o this_o place_n but_o be_v indeed_o the_o word_n by_o which_o david_n as_o a_o prophet_n to_o who_o the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n come_v speak_v forth_o that_o part_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o although_o david_n do_v meditate_v on_o the_o law_n of_o god_n which_o if_o i_o shall_v grant_v it_o to_o be_v only_o the_o outward_a law_n that_o come_v by_o moses_n yet_o that_o do_v not_o prove_v that_o he_o call_v it_o the_o word_n nor_o can_v it_o be_v understand_v that_o he_o mean_v the_o scripture_n when_o he_o so_o speak_v of_o the_o word_n for_o the_o reason_n afore_o give_v the_o word_n be_v precious_a or_o scarce_o in_o those_o day_n which_o come_v to_o the_o prophet_n say_v so_o and_o so_o and_o those_o say_n be_v signify_v or_o contain_v in_o the_o scripture_n but_o the_o scripture_n be_v not_o more_o scarce_o then_o then_o at_o time_n before_o though_o the_o word_n be_v of_o which_o there_o be_v a_o famine_n and_o though_o the_o scripture_n may_v be_v hear_v now_o which_o contain_v the_o say_v of_o the_o word_n which_o the_o word_n demonstrate_v yet_o all_o that_o hear_v they_o can_v be_v say_v to_o hear_v the_o sound_n of_o the_o word_n as_o they_o do_v who_o hear_v those_o say_n demonstrate_v or_o sound_v out_o of_o the_o mouth_n of_o the_o prophet_n by_o the_o word_n that_o so_o speak_v and_o although_o j._n n._n say_v it_o be_v plain_a the_o word_n here_o be_v not_o mean_a of_o christ_n because_o the_o prophet_n call_v it_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o say_v he_o have_v swear_v to_o keep_v it_o and_o it_o can_v in_o reason_n be_v understand_v that_o david_n or_o any_o man_n do_v ever_o keep_v christ_n answ_n i_o answer_v here_o j._n n._n have_v wrong_v the_o prophet_n word_n for_o he_o do_v not_o say_v that_o he_o have_v swear_v to_o keep_v the_o word_n but_o he_o have_v swear_v to_o keep_v his_o righteous_a judgement_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v say_v he_o will_v observe_v the_o judgement_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o walk_v in_o the_o path_n thereof_o or_o that_o he_o will_v walk_v according_a to_o the_o spirit_n of_o judgement_n yet_o notwithstanding_o this_o it_o be_v but_o the_o unreasonableness_n of_o j.n._n to_o conclude_v that_o david_n nor_o any_o man_n do_v never_o keep_v christ_n for_o they_o that_o keep_v in_o subjection_n to_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n and_o dwell_v under_o his_o government_n may_v be_v proper_o say_v to_o keep_v the_o word_n which_o be_v christ_n and_o scripture_n to_o conclude_v that_o no_o man_n do_v ever_o keep_v christ_n although_o all_o his_o be_v keep_v from_o the_o hour_n of_o temptation_n by_o he_o who_o be_v the_o power_n of_o god_n through_o faith_n unto_o salvation_n by_o all_o which_o it_o plain_o appear_v that_o the_o word_n of_o the_o prophet_n produce_v by_o j._n n._n do_v not_o prove_v nor_o intend_v to_o prove_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o the_o prophet_n and_o holy_a man_n of_o god_n keep_v although_o i_o shall_v easy_o confess_v that_o they_o do_v contain_v many_o say_n and_o word_n be_v give_v at_o large_a to_o god_n people_n etc._n etc._n so_o its_o plain_a etc._n etc._n the_o scripture_n be_v proper_o and_o principal_o call_v the_o word_n of_o god_n answ_n to_o which_o i_o answer_v this_o do_v not_o at_o all_o prove_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v the_o word_n which_o the_o prophet_n say_v be_v line_n upon_o line_n and_o precept_n upon_o precept_n unto_o they_o for_o though_o he_o say_v who_o shall_v i_o make_v to_o understand_v doctrine_n and_o in_o order_n to_o it_o say_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n must_v be_v precept_n upon_o precept_n yet_o that_o do_v and_o the_o doctrine_n which_o they_o preach_v can_v not_o be_v proper_o call_v the_o word_n itself_o that_o come_v to_o they_o though_o the_o sound_n of_o the_o word_n be_v hear_v in_o the_o delivery_n of_o that_o doctrine_n but_o their_o doctrine_n proceed_v from_o the_o word_n which_o bid_v they_o so_o speak_v so_o that_o there_o be_v the_o word_n the_o teacher_n and_o the_o doctrine_n what_o he_o shall_v preach_v and_o the_o person_n distinct_o to_o who_o he_o shall_v preach_v and_o give_v they_o instruction_n in_o the_o 5_o verse_n that_o they_o shall_v walk_v to_o the_o doctrine_n or_o teach_v answerable_o and_o the_o reason_n he_o give_v be_v this_o lest_o the_o word_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v blaspheme_v so_o that_o the_o doctrine_n he_o give_v in_o charge_n to_o titus_n with_o all_o the_o particular_n of_o the_o doctrine_n the_o same_o in_o the_o 5_o verse_n he_o call_v the_o word_n of_o god_n answ_n that_o conclusion_n be_v utter_o false_a he_o do_v not_o say_v nor_o in_o effect_n say_v that_o the_o doctrine_n with_o all_o particular_n of_o the_o doctrine_n be_v the_o word_n nor_o can_v it_o rational_o be_v conclude_v that_o it_o be_v the_o scripture_n or_o the_o doctrine_n that_o he_o speak_v of_o when_o he_o say_v lest_o the_o word_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v blaspheme_v but_o rather_o that_o worthy_a name_n by_o which_o they_o be_v call_v which_o name_n they_o who_o keep_v the_o word_n deny_v not_o as_o before_o show_v for_o if_o they_o shall_v not_o walk_v according_a to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o word_n which_o they_o teach_v the_o ignorant_a that_o be_v without_o or_o they_o that_o watch_v for_o iniquity_n may_v be_v ready_a to_o judge_v that_o there_o be_v a_o difficiency_n in_o the_o word_n by_o which_o they_o be_v teach_v teach_v may_v be_v blaspheme_v through_o their_o not_o walk_v according_o to_o the_o doctrine_n thereof_o who_o make_v a_o profession_n of_o it_o so_o that_o the_o apostle_n in_o say_v lest_o the_o word_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v blaspheme_v do_v not_o at_o all_o call_v the_o doctrine_n the_o word_n nor_o do_v this_o in_o the_o least_o serve_v to_o prove_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v proper_o for_o that_o which_o be_v unsound_a or_o not_o right_a in_o the_o ground_n bottom_n or_o foundation_n can_v never_o be_v make_v sound_n or_o right_o by_o repetition_n but_o the_o subject_a before_o state_v by_o j.n._n be_v unsound_a and_o not_o true_a as_o before_o prove_v and_o therefore_o can_v never_o be_v make_v sound_n and_o true_a by_o repetition_n for_o which_o cause_n as_o also_o upon_o paraphaise_v upon_o once_o more_o by_o he_o which_o i_o have_v before_o examine_v and_o speak_v to_o and_o therefore_o shall_v omit_v take_v further_a notice_n thereof_o at_o this_o time_n and_o proceed_v to_o his_o next_o subject_n or_o assertion_n in_o the_o 22th_o and_o 23th_o page_n of_o his_o book_n where_o he_o speak_v as_o follow_v concern_v scripture_n be_v a_o perfect_a rule_n for_o all_o man_n etc._n etc._n have_v thus_o prove_v the_o scripture_n to_o be_v the_o word_n etc._n etc._n i_o shall_v therefore_o show_v brief_o that_o the_o scripture_n i_o have_v so_o prove_v to_o be_v comparative_o as_o a_o door_n a_o vine_n a_o ensign_n a_o star_n a_o lamb_n etc._n etc._n but_o yet_o he_o be_v not_o real_o any_o of_o these_o pag._n 50._o answ_n what_o absurdity_n be_v here_o may_v not_o j._n n._n as_o well_o have_v say_v that_o though_o christ_n be_v call_v christ_n yet_o he_o be_v not_o real_o so_o and_o although_o he_o be_v call_v a_o saviour_n yet_o he_o be_v not_o real_o so_o have_v he_o not_o the_o same_o ground_n for_o the_o one_o as_o the_o other_o if_o christ_n be_v not_o real_o what_o he_o say_v he_o be_v be_v it_o not_o to_o make_v he_o a_o liar_n whether_o be_v it_o more_o safe_a to_o believe_v what_o christ_n say_v himself_o be_v or_o to_o believe_v what_o john_n newman_n say_v he_o be_v for_o j._n n._n altogether_o contradict_v christ_n saying_n in_o etc._n and_o in_o pag._n 51._o he_o say_v it_o can_v be_v understand_v that_o christ_n as_o christ_n shall_v be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n from_o or_o in_o the_o beginning_n or_o yet_o call_v the_o and_o whereas_o he_o say_v let_v we_o labour_n with_o god_n for_o his_o bless_a spirit_n to_o guide_v we_o in_o all_o truth_n he_o therein_o seem_v to_o own_o truth_n to_o be_v a_o mystery_n within_o also_o for_o if_o the_o spirit_n be_v to_o be_v receive_v it_o must_v be_v within_o and_o the_o spirit_n be_v truth_n because_o as_o j._n n._n elsewhere_o confess_v it_o be_v of_o the_o same_o be_v nature_n power_n and_o tendency_n with_o god_n who_o be_v truth_n and_o with_o christ_n who_o be_v the_o truth_n and_o the_o spirit_n be_v the_o unction_n which_o be_v receive_v from_o the_o holy_a one_o which_o be_v true_a and_o not_o a_o lie_n so_o here_o he_o seem_v to_o own_o truth_n a_o mystery_n within_o the_o spirit_n be_v mystery_n which_o before_o he_o say_v be_v contrary_a to_o truth_n be_v intent_n and_o thus_o his_o confusion_n appear_v from_o time_n to_o time_n and_o moreover_o if_o in_o such_o a_o dangerous_a time_n as_o he_o suppose_v this_o to_o be_v the_o spirit_n be_v the_o testimony_n i_o own_o but_o what_o be_v this_o law_n and_o testimony_n be_v it_o not_o the_o light_n and_o spirit_n in_o the_o inward_a part_n for_o solomon_n say_v the_o law_n be_v light_a and_o liberty_n the_o law_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o light_n thereof_o in_o the_o inward_a part_n for_o this_o be_v that_o perfect_a rule_n that_o lead_v in_o the_o way_n in_o which_o a_o wayfaring-man_n though_o a_o fool_n can_v err_v and_o without_o this_o there_o be_v none_o able_a to_o understand_v the_o scripture_n nor_o to_o practice_v they_o because_o of_o ourselves_o we_o can_v do_v nothing_o yet_o we_o be_v willing_a to_o have_v our_o doctrine_n principle_n and_o practice_n try_v by_o the_o scripture_n of_o truth_n but_o than_o say_v j.n._n the_o most_o dangerous_a spirit_n be_v this_o that_o draw_v all_o the_o happiness_n of_o this_o life_n and_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v into_o man_n and_o finish_v all_o the_o glory_n of_o man_n at_o the_o brink_n of_o the_o grave_a answ_n if_o by_o the_o glory_n of_o man_n he_o mean_v the_o glory_n of_o man_n as_o simple_o a_o creature_n then_o i_o do_v say_v all_o that_o be_v to_o be_v finish_v at_o the_o brink_n of_o the_o grave_a will_v keep_v people_n out_o of_o a_o expectation_n of_o see_v and_o behold_v that_o glory_n that_o be_v endless_a while_o on_o this_o side_n the_o grave_a be_v not_o much_o inferior_a as_o to_o the_o ill-consequence_n of_o it_o to_o the_o other_o for_o that_o will_v deprive_v people_n of_o the_o chief_a happiness_n of_o this_o life_n and_o of_o the_o happy_a enjoyment_n of_o that_o glory_n which_o their_o peace_n and_o joy_n be_v full_a of_o in_o believe_v while_o they_o remain_v on_o this_o side_n the_o grave_a and_o may_v also_o endanger_v to_o deprive_v they_o of_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o that_o which_o be_v to_o be_v receive_v in_o the_o life_n that_o be_v to_o come_v for_o if_o the_o earnest_a of_o the_o incorruptible_a inheritance_n which_o be_v a_o part_n thereof_o be_v not_o receive_v in_o this_o life_n what_o true_a comfort_n can_v there_o be_v enjoy_v in_o this_o life_n so_o then_o that_o spirit_n of_o grace_n or_o word_n of_o grace_n which_o manifest_v its_o light_n and_o strength_n in_o the_o inward_a part_n by_o its_o own_o operation_n for_o the_o beget_n of_o faith_n in_o and_o concern_v itself_o in_o all_o that_o hear_v and_o receive_v it_o this_o i_o say_v be_v not_o to_o be_v shun_v but_o adhere_v unto_o by_o all_o as_o unto_o the_o author_n of_o true_a faith_n see_v faith_n come_v by_o hear_v and_o hear_v by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o
