lay_v no_o great_a stress_n on_o a_o argument_n found_v on_o so_o ambiguous_a a_o principle_n so_o i_o shall_v add_v that_o i_o fear_v these_o two_o thing_n will_v prove_v human_a invention_n according_a to_o the_o just_a notion_n of_o they_o give_v in_o the_o remark_n on_o the_o introduction_n for_o the_o cross_n in_o baptism_n i_o see_v not_o how_o it_o can_v be_v clear_v from_o be_v a_o new_a human_a sacrament_n for_o there_o want_v nothing_o but_o divine_a institution_n to_o make_v it_o as_o much_o a_o sacrament_n as_o baptism_n itself_o for_o what_o more_o can_v be_v require_v to_o the_o nature_n of_o such_o a_o sacrament_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n in_o reference_n to_o both_o the_o part_n of_o it_o than_o to_o be_v a_o visible_a sign_n whereby_o god_n promise_n of_o the_o blessing_n of_o that_o covenant_n be_v confirm_v to_o we_o and_o we_o bring_v under_o solemn_a obligation_n to_o the_o duty_n of_o it_o for_o if_o such_o a_o external_a sign_n be_v appoint_v by_o god_n for_o these_o end_n it_o be_v a_o divine_a sacrament_n if_o by_o man_n it_o be_v a_o human_a sacrament_n or_o a_o part_n of_o positive_a worship_n of_o human_a invention_n now_o that_o the_o establish_v church_n have_v appoint_v this_o visible_a sign_n of_o the_o cross_n for_o both_o these_o purpose_n i_o mention_v before_o be_v i_o think_v sufficient_o evident_a from_o her_o own_o honour_v the_o name_n of_o the_o cross_n so_o far_o that_o under_o it_o he_o comprehend_v not_o only_o christ_n crucify_v but_o the_o force_n effect_n and_o merit_n of_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n with_o all_o the_o comfort_n fruit_n and_o promise_n which_o we_o receive_v or_o expect_v thereby_o and_o afterward_o the_o church_n of_o england_n have_v retain_v still_o the_o sign_n of_o it_o in_o baptism_n follow_v therein_o the_o primitive_a and_o apostolical_a church_n and_o account_v it_o a_o lawful_a outward_a ceremony_n and_o honourable_a badge_n whereby_o the_o infant_n be_v dedicate_v fruit_n and_o promise_n which_o we_o receive_v or_o expect_v as_o the_o force_n effect_n and_o merit_n of_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n and_o sure_a baptism_n can_v represent_v no_o more_o to_o be_v either_o receive_v or_o expect_v by_o we_o it_o be_v also_o advance_v as_o a_o honourable_a badge_n by_o which_o the_o person_n baptise_a be_v dedicate_v to_o the_o service_n of_o he_o that_o die_v on_o the_o cross_n and_o consequent_o bring_v under_o solemn_a obligation_n to_o all_o the_o duty_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n to_o confess_v the_o faith_n of_o christ_n crucify_v and_o manful_o to_o peculiar_a duty_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n can_v baptism_n oblige_v we_o to_o nay_o as_o those_o sacrament_n of_o divine_a institution_n be_v intend_v by_o their_o signification_n to_o church_n that_o it_o be_v apt_a to_o stir_v up_o the_o dull_a mind_n of_o man_n to_o the_o remembrance_n of_o his_o duty_n to_o god_n by_o such_o a_o notable_a and_o spiritual_a signification_n whereby_o he_o may_v be_v edify_v see_v pref._n to_o the_o cerem_fw-la so_o that_o cross_v in_o baptism_n be_v as_o much_o a_o sacrament_n as_o any_o thing_n can_v be_v that_o be_v not_o divine_o institute_v i._n e._n it_o be_v a_o sacrament_n which_o man_n have_v presume_v to_o institute_n to_o the_o like_a purpose_n and_o use_v as_o our_o bless_a saviour_n have_v institute_v baptism_n itself_o nor_o do_v any_o of_o those_o excuse_n i_o have_v yet_o meet_v with_o signify_v any_o thing_n to_o take_v off_o this_o charge_n we_o be_v sometime_o tell_v that_o baptism_n be_v perfect_a without_o it_o see_v the_o 30_o canon_n answ_n not_o to_o insist_v on_o what_o may_v be_v just_o say_v that_o the_o canon_n enjoin_v the_o use_n of_o it_o in_o baptism_n and_o that_o a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o office_n of_o baptism_n be_v continue_v after_o the_o cross_v be_v over_o which_o seem_v to_o imply_v the_o quite_o contrary_a to_o what_o the_o excuse_n insinuate_v i_o do_v not_o see_v that_o this_o signify_v any_o thing_n to_o remove_v our_o objection_n for_o baptism_n be_v perfect_a without_o the_o lord's-supper_n and_o yet_o that_o be_v a_o distinct_a sacrament_n and_o so_o will_n cross_v prove_v no_o less_o a_o human_a sacrament_n though_o it_o be_v administer_v in_o public_a worship_n at_o a_o different_a time_n from_o that_o of_o baptism_n only_o it_o look_v the_o more_o presumptuous_a to_o join_v it_o with_o baptism_n as_o if_o we_o will_v supy_o our_o lord_n defect_n in_o that_o institution_n which_o he_o have_v make_v the_o initiate_a symbol_n and_o badge_n of_o our_o christian_a profession_n we_o be_v also_o tell_v that_o the_o minister_n baptise_n in_o the_o name_n of_o christ_n but_o sign_n with_o the_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o church_n who_o by_o that_o rite_n receive_v the_o infant_n into_o the_o number_n of_o her_o particular_a member_n answ_n i_o may_v content_v myself_o with_o reply_v that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n suggest_v in_o the_o office_n of_o baptism_n nor_o in_o the_o canon_n that_o relate_v to_o the_o cross_n the_o word_n use_v by_o the_o minister_n when_o he_o cross_v the_o child_n rather_o relate_v to_o its_o be_v receive_v into_o the_o universal_a church_n for_o that_o be_v the_o congregation_n of_o christ_n flock_n nor_o be_v there_o the_o least_o syllable_n in_o the_o word_n way_n true_a that_o the_o cross_n be_v only_o use_v as_o a_o rite_n by_o which_o the_o establish_v church_n admit_v the_o baptise_a into_o the_o number_n of_o her_o member_n for_o the_o 36th_o canon_n express_o assert_v it_o to_o be_v a_o honourable_a badge_n whereby_o the_o person_n baptise_a be_v dedicate_v to_o the_o service_n of_o he_o that_o die_v on_o the_o cross_n and_o refer_v to_o the_o word_n of_o the_o common-prayer-book_n which_o be_v plain_a to_o that_o purpose_n and_o therefore_o the_o difficulty_n still_o remain_v by_o what_o

their_o cure_n or_o flock_n which_o ●e_v open_o know_v to_o live_v in_o notorious_a sin_n without_o repentance_n though_o we_o can_v expect_v no_o very_a considerable_a effect_n of_o such_o a_o temporary_a suspension_n when_o it_o oblige_v the_o minister_n to_o turn_v informer_n against_o such_o offender_n in_o the_o spiritual_a court_n where_o they_o be_v sure_a to_o be_v put_v to_o great_a imposition_n of_o hand_n or_o at_o least_o take_v care_n that_o those_o minister_n shall_v examine_v they_o yet_o we_o understand_v this_o be_v too_o often_o put_v off_o to_o a_o archdeacon_n or_o one_o of_o his_o chaplain_n and_o at_o best_a but_o too_o superficial_o perform_v and_o we_o humble_o conceive_v the_o canon_n itself_o be_v very_o defective_a in_o not_o recommend_v such_o particular_a trial_n as_o be_v fit_a for_o such_o candidate_n of_o the_o ministerial_a function_n to_o undergo_v in_o order_n to_o their_o give_v a_o sufficient_a specimen_fw-la of_o their_o proficiency_n in_o the_o study_n of_o divinity_n and_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o herein_o we_o will_v humble_o recommend_v to_o they_o the_o excellent_a method_n propose_v by_o the_o westminster-assemble_o in_o their_o proposition_n relate_v to_o church-government_n and_o ordination_n viz._n that_o such_o candidate_n be_v examine_v touch_v their_o skill_n in_o the_o original_a language_n by_o read_v the_o hebrew_n and_o greek_a testament_n and_o render_v some_o portion_n of_o they_o into_o latin_n they_o be_v to_o be_v examine_v also_o what_o author_n in_o divinity_n they_o have_v read_v and_o trial_n shall_v be_v make_v of_o their_o knowledge_n of_o the_o ground_n of_o religion_n and_o ability_n to_o defend_v the_o orthodox_n doctrine_n in_o they_o against_o all_o unsound_a and_o erroneous_a opinion_n especial_o those_o of_o the_o present_a age_n of_o their_o skill_n and_o sense_n in_o the_o meaning_n of_o such_o place_n of_o scripture_n as_o shall_v be_v propose_v to_o they_o in_o case_n of_o conscience_n and_o in_o the_o chronology_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o in_o the_o ecclesiastical_a history_n they_o be_v to_o expound_v some_o difficult_a place_n of_o scripture_n they_o be_v to_o frame_v a_o discourse_n in_o latin_a upon_o some_o common-place_n or_o controversy_n in_o divinity_n and_o maintain_v a_o dispute_n upon_o it_o and_o they_o be_v to_o preach_v a_o practical_a sermon_n before_o the_o people_n those_o concern_v in_o their_o ordination_n be_v present_a this_o method_n be_v so_o exact_o follow_v among_o the_o and_o as_o it_o be_v the_o most_o effectual_a that_o can_v be_v propose_v for_o prevent_v a_o ignorant_a and_o insufficient_a ministry_n so_o it_o be_v the_o more_o requisite_a that_o the_o like_a their_o profession_n for_o the_o infectious_a example_n of_o such_o clergyman_n be_v far_o more_o powerful_a to_o spread_v the_o contagion_n of_o wickedness_n and_o vice_n among_o their_o flock_n than_o their_o doctrine_n to_o propagate_v piety_n and_o holiness_n and_o it_o be_v no_o wonder_n that_o either_o the_o offering_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v abhor_v by_o the_o people_n when_o they_o see_v they_o present_v by_o so_o unhallowed_a hand_n or_o that_o they_o run_v without_o restraint_n into_o all_o excess_n of_o riot_n when_o they_o do_v but_o herein_o follow_v their_o spiritual_a guide_n it_o be_v great_a pity_n therefore_o that_o the_o 42d_o canon_n which_o threaten_v such_o scandalous_a clergyman_n with_o ecclesiastical_a censure_n be_v not_o more_o faithful_o execute_v and_o it_o seem_v unaccountable_a why_o it_o shall_v not_o as_o express_o order_v the_o suspension_n and_o deposition_n of_o such_o as_o be_v find_v incorrigible_a as_o other_o canon_n of_o the_o the_o time_n which_o he_o that_o enjoy_v they_o be_v to_o reside_v in_o each_o of_o his_o benefice_n be_v not_o determine_v and_o by_o the_o 41_o canon_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n i_o find_v no_o other_o bound_n set_v to_o the_o number_n of_o benefice_n than_o that_o they_o must_v not_o be_v more_o than_o thirty_o mile_n asunder_o and_o though_o every_o such_o bluralist_n be_v require_v to_o have_v under_o he_o in_o the_o benefice_n where_o he_o do_v not_o reside_v a_o lawful_a and_o sufficient_a preacher_n yet_o it_o be_v both_o unreasonable_a in_o itself_o that_o such_o a_o sufficient_a preacher_n shall_v sacrifice_v his_o painful_a labour_n to_o pamper_v the_o avarice_n and_o ease_n of_o another_o and_o it_o be_v too_o notorious_a that_o such_o pluralist_n for_o the_o most_o part_n give_v so_o despicable_a and_o stingy_a allowance_n to_o their_o poor_a curate_n that_o it_o can_v reasonable_o
the_o pure_a word_n of_o god_n in_o its_o naked_a simplicity_n for_o if_o he_o mean_v by_o it_o that_o it_o be_v a_o carnal_a and_o sinful_a humour_n to_o be_v fond_a of_o have_v the_o word_n of_o
