god_n have_v warrant_v a_o alteration_n for_o faith_n have_v eye_n to_o see_v the_o wisdom_n the_o power_n and_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n in_o his_o word_n discern_v a_o far_o of_o that_o the_o institution_n of_o the_o lord_n supper_n be_v long_o before_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o the_o mass_n and_o therefore_o our_o king_n by_o abandon_v popery_n out_o of_o the_o realm_n do_v not_o institute_v any_o new_a religion_n but_o only_o they_o restore_v the_o old_a now_o than_o if_o the_o same_o holy_a law_n of_o god_n do_v condemn_v the_o choice_n and_o thrust_v of_o a_o pastor_n upon_o the_o people_n by_o one_o man_n alone_o and_o again_o if_o the_o same_o law_n do_v impugn_v the_o primacy_n of_o one_o pastor_n over_o all_o pastor_n as_o well_o in_o a_o diocese_n or_o province_n as_o in_o the_o whole_a west_n part_n of_o christendom_n what_o danger_n can_v it_o be_v not_o to_o disfranchise_v the_o one_o since_o without_o any_o manner_n of_o danger_n we_o have_v abolish_v the_o other_o or_o what_o peril_n can_v it_o be_v not_o to_o countenance_v the_o son_n since_o without_o peril_n we_o have_v discountenance_v the_o father_n especial_o see_v in_o this_o place_n of_o the_o admonition_n we_o have_v a_o plain_a confession_n that_o the_o common_a manner_n of_o election_n of_o pastor_n elder_n and_o deacon_n in_o the_o old_a church_n be_v make_v by_o the_o people_n for_o if_o the_o example_n of_o schism_n discord_n people_n common_a manner_n of_o election_n in_o the_o old_a church_n be_v by_o the_o people_n &_o contention_n do_v common_o appear_v in_o the_o old_a church_n while_o that_o manner_n of_o election_n do_v continue_v then_o by_o his_o own_o mouth_n that_o manner_n of_o election_n be_v common_a and_o do_v continue_v in_o the_o old_a church_n beside_o this_o inconvenience_n say_v he_o cause_v prince_n &_o bishop_n so_o much_o to_o entermedle_v in_o this_o matter_n from_o whence_o it_o necessary_o again_o follow_v that_o by_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o law_n of_o god_n prince_n and_o bishop_n do_v not_o entermedle_n with_o that_o matter_n at_o all_o for_o have_v it_o be_v simple_o lawful_a for_o they_o to_o have_v scripture_n bb._n meddle_v not_o with_o election_n of_o pastor_n by_o the_o holy_a scripture_n deal_v in_o those_o cause_n by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n they_o as_o well_o before_o schism_n discord_n and_o dissension_n as_o afterward_o yea_o rather_o much_o more_o before_o then_o afterward_o for_o then_o by_o their_o own_o right_n may_v prince_n and_o bishop_n have_v prevent_v all_o occasion_n of_o schism_n and_o contention_n and_o have_v so_o preserve_v the_o church_n that_o no_o tumult_n or_o disorder_n shall_v once_o have_v be_v raise_v or_o begin_v therein_o again_o if_o by_o the_o law_n of_o god_n prince_n &_o bishop_n have_v meddle_v in_o these_o matter_n and_o have_v not_o intermeddle_v by_o humane_a devise_n then_o lawful_o by_o their_o authority_n alone_o may_v they_o have_v choose_v pastor_n elder_n and_o deacon_n in_o the_o old_a church_n which_o thing_n in_o this_o place_n by_o necessary_a inference_n he_o deni_v for_o schism_n say_v he_o cause_v they_o to_o entermedle_n so_o as_o by_o his_o confession_n they_o be_v but_o entermedler_n and_o entercommoner_n by_o reason_n of_o schism_n &_o not_o commoner_n and_o meddler_n by_o virtue_n of_o god_n word_n and_o yet_o now_o a_o day_n our_o reverend_a bishop_n in_o this_o case_n be_v no_o more_o entercommoner_n with_o prince_n and_o with_o the_o people_n they_o be_v no_o more_o entermedler_n as_o in_o old_a time_n they_o be_v but_o they_o have_v now_o so_o far_o encroch_v upon_o the_o prerogative_n of_o the_o prince_n and_o privilege_n of_o the_o people_n that_o neither_o prince_n people_n bishop_n encroach_v upon_o the_o right_n of_o prince_n and_o people_n nor_o people_n have_v any_o commons_o in_o the_o election_n of_o pastor_n elder_n &_o deacon_n with_o they_o at_o all_o beside_o if_o schism_n and_o contention_n among_o the_o people_n be_v the_o reason_n why_o bishop_n first_o intermeddle_v in_o the_o choice_n of_o pastor_n we_o now_o have_v no_o schism_n nor_o contention_n about_o the_o choice_n of_o pastor_n by_o the_o people_n and_o so_o the_o cause_n cease_v why_o shall_v not_o the_o effect_n likewise_o cease_v but_o this_o effect_n be_v therefore_o still_o to_o be_v continue_v because_o otherwise_o the_o cause_n will_v a_o new_a sprout_n out_o and_o spring_v up_o again_o nay_o rather_o inasmuch_o as_o for_o these_o many_o year_n we_o have_v have_v schism_n discord_n &_o dissension_n because_o the_o bishop_n whole_o and_o altogether_o have_v meddle_v in_o the_o choice_n of_o pastor_n and_o have_v thrust_v upon_o the_o people_n whatsoever_o pastor_n please_v not_o the_o people_n but_o please_v themselves_o &_o have_v not_o suffer_v the_o people_n to_o meddle_v no_o not_o so_o much_o as_o once_o to_o entermedle_n in_o these_o matter_n in_o as_o much_o i_o say_v as_o these_o thing_n be_v so_o it_o seem_v most_o expedient_a requisite_a &_o necessary_a for_o the_o appease_n &_o pacify_v of_o this_o discord_n &_o the_o take_v away_o of_o this_o schism_n to_o have_v that_o manner_n of_o election_n which_o be_v in_o the_o old_a church_n restore_v to_o the_o people_n and_o this_o wherein_o the_o bishop_n have_v intermeddle_v without_o authority_n from_o the_o word_n to_o be_v abolish_v that_o so_o again_o the_o cause_n of_o schism_n and_o strife_n which_o be_v now_o among_o we_o cease_v the_o effect_n may_v likewise_o cease_v after_o i_o have_v end_v this_o tract_n in_o this_o manner_n touch_v this_o point_n there_o come_v into_o my_o hand_n a_o book_n entitle_v the_o perpetual_a government_n of_o christ_n church_n write_v by_o thomas_n bilson_n warden_n of_o winchester_n college_n in_o the_o fifteen_o chapter_n of_o which_o book_n be_v handle_v this_o question_n viz_n to_o who_o the_o election_n of_o bishop_n and_o presbyter_n do_v right_o belong_v and_o the_o ordinary_n in_o every_o parish_n for_o the_o better_a retain_v of_o the_o people_n in_o obedience_n unto_o divine_a service_n in_o every_o parish_n say_v the_o injunction_n three_o or_o four_o discrete_a man_n which_o tender_a god_n glory_n and_o his_o true_a religion_n shall_v be_v appoint_v by_o the_o ordinary_n diligent_o to_o see_v that_o all_o the_o parishioner_n du_o resort_v unto_o minister_v the_o doctrine_n and_o sacrament_n and_o discipline_n of_o christ_n as_o the_o lord_n have_v command_v by_o which_o word_n insert_v in_o the_o book_n there_o be_v a_o plain_a and_o open_a confession_n make_v by_o all_o estate_n in_o parleament_n that_o christ_n have_v not_o only_o establish_v parleament_n every_o minister_n ought_v to_o minister_v the_o discipline_n of_o christ_n in_o his_o own_o cure_n by_o consent_n of_o parleament_n discipline_n but_o a_o certain_a form_n of_o discipline_n in_o his_o church_n and_o that_o the_o pastor_n to_o who_o the_o care_n and_o charge_n be_v commit_v to_o teach_v the_o people_n aught_o to_o minister_v the_o same_o discipline_n for_o it_o have_v be_v a_o very_a absurd_a part_n for_o the_o parleament_n to_o appoint_v the_o bishop_n to_o receive_v a_o promise_n from_o the_o minister_n to_o minister_v the_o discipline_n of_o christ_n if_o christ_n have_v not_o institute_v a_o discipline_n or_o that_o the_o same_o discipline_n which_o he_o institute_v have_v not_o in_o their_o judgement_n belong_v unto_o the_o minister_n and_o therefore_o this_o very_a letter_n of_o the_o book_n convince_v the_o whole_a answer_n make_v unto_o the_o abstract_n touch_v this_o point_n to_o be_v very_o erroneous_a frivolous_a and_o impertinent_a to_o the_o point_n in_o question_n for_o whereas_o in_o the_o abstract_n it_o be_v allege_v that_o the_o bishop_n by_o virtue_n of_o christ_n the_o minister_n by_o promise_n bind_v himself_o to_o minister_v the_o discipline_n of_o christ_n the_o order_n and_o form_n appoint_v by_o act_n of_o parleament_n bind_v the_o minister_n aswell_o to_o minister_v the_o discipline_n of_o christ_n within_o his_o cure_n as_o the_o doctrine_n and_o sacrament_n of_o christ_n as_o the_o lord_n have_v command_v etc._n etc._n hereunto_o first_o he_o answer_v that_o these_o clause_n do_v not_o dispositive_o 60._o pag._n 55._o pag._n 60._o ordain_v any_o thing_n for_o discipline_n as_o though_o the_o by_o law_n establish_v shall_v do_v agreeable_o to_o god_n will_v if_o the_o order_n in_o these_o thing_n by_o the_o realm_n receive_v shall_v not_o by_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o law_n be_v hold_v as_o agreeable_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n what_o do_v the_o law_n mean_v that_o a_o man_n can_v do_v agreeable_o to_o god_n will_v in_o any_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o agreeable_a to_o his_o word_n or_o if_o the_o law_n have_v establish_v a_o order_n in_o the_o discipline_n which_o be_v not_o agreeable_a to_o god_n word_n shall_v the_o minister_n do_v agreeable_o to_o god_n will_v if_o they_o follow_v the_o law_n for_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o law_n be_v plain_a viz._n that_o the_o minister_n by_o virtue_n of_o his_o promise_n make_v to_o the_o bishop_n shall_v be_v no_o further_o bind_v to_o minister_v any_o doctrine_n sacrament_n or_o discipline_n receive_v by_o the_o realm_n unless_o the_o realm_n have_v receive_v the_o same_o according_a to_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n for_o the_o parleament_n have_v a_o religious_a consideration_n that_o the_o minister_n of_o christ_n must_v not_o have_v so_o much_o respect_n what_o the_o law_n of_o the_o realm_n as_o what_o the_o law_n of_o god_n command_v careful_o provide_v for_o his_o indemnity_n in_o this_o behalf_n beside_o what_o a_o frivolous_a comment_n have_v he_o make_v upon_o the_o word_n of_o the_o etc._n a_o frivolous_a comment_n upon_o the_o word_n of_o the_o booâ—e_n of_o ordain_v priest_n etc._n etc._n book_n when_o he_o say_v that_o these_o word_n of_o the_o bishop_n do_v not_o dispositive_o ordain_v any_o thing_n for_o discipline_n when_o as_o the_o question_n be_v not_o whether_o the_o bb._n word_n but_o whether_o the_o law_n and_o book_n dispose_v any_o thing_n for_o discipline_n for_o the_o bishop_n be_v but_o a_o servant_n to_o the_o book_n and_o to_o the_o law_n and_o one_o unto_o who_o fidelity_n the_o execution_n of_o the_o law_n &_o book_n be_v commit_v though_o he_o do_v not_o by_o his_o word_n dispose_v any_o thing_n of_o discipline_n yet_o by_o his_o demand_n he_o show_v unto_o the_o minister_n that_o the_o office_n of_o the_o ministration_n of_o discipline_n within_o his_o cure_n &_o charge_n be_v commit_v unto_o he_o &_o that_o by_o his_o ordination_n his_o person_n be_v full_o enable_v aswell_o to_o minister_v the_o discipline_n as_o to_o preach_v the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n and_o hereupon_o also_o fall_v to_o the_o ground_n his_o other_o answer_n as_o whole_o impertinent_a to_o the_o point_n in_o question_n for_o where_o he_o say_v that_o the_o law_n mean_v not_o by_o authority_n hereof_o to_o establish_v that_o the_o order_n of_o these_o thing_n by_o the_o realm_n receive_v shall_v be_v hold_v as_o agreeable_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n this_o i_o say_v seem_v whole_o to_o be_v impertinent_a to_o the_o purpose_n of_o the_o abstract_n for_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n insinuate_v question_n the_o answer_n to_o the_o abstract_a whole_o every_o minister_n by_o virtue_n of_o his_o promise_n enjoin_v by_o act_n of_o parleament_n to_o be_v make_v by_o he_o and_o by_o the_o office_n of_o ministry_n take_v upon_o he_o at_o the_o time_n of_o his_o ordination_n have_v bind_v himself_o to_o minister_v the_o doctrine_n sacrament_n and_o discipline_n of_o christ_n as_o the_o lord_n have_v command_v and_o what_o then_o if_o the_o law_n
