it_o do_v not_o follow_v hence_o that_o episcopacy_n and_o presbytery_n stand_v upon_o equal_a term_n and_o though_o both_o proceed_n upon_o the_o same_o supposition_n do_v equal_o complain_v yet_o that_o part_n which_o real_o suffer_v wrong_v do_v just_o complain_v and_o if_o he_o please_v now_o to_o set_v his_o table_n right_a again_o i_o be_o apt_a to_o think_v that_o he_o will_v give_v it_o on_o the_o episcopal_a side_n but_o there_o be_v something_o far_o for_o which_o the_o presbyterian_a my_o just_o complain_v though_o this_o author_n have_v cast_v such_o a_o mist_n before_o his_o own_o eye_n that_o he_o can_v not_o see_v it_o for_o the_o presbyterian_a in_o the_o general_a notion_n assert_v a_o great_a truth_n and_o it_o be_v not_o his_o fault_n that_o he_o plead_v a_o divine_a right_n of_o church_n government_n but_o that_o he_o take_v it_o out_o of_o those_o hand_n wherein_o christ_n and_o his_o apostle_n leave_v it_o to_o commit_v to_o those_o to_o who_o it_o be_v never_o entrust_v and_o thus_o lick_v up_o aerius_n vomit_n now_o in_o this_o case_n mr._n lowth_n have_v prove_v the_o presbyterian_a concern_v as_o well_o as_o the_o episcoparian_a for_o when_o the_o author_n of_o the_o irenicum_fw-la to_o avoid_v the_o argument_n from_o the_o superiority_n of_o the_o apostle_n and_o their_o jurisdiction_n over_o the_o pastor_n of_o the_o church_n by_o a_o act_n of_o christ_n have_v plead_v that_o it_o must_v be_v far_o prove_v that_o it_o be_v christ_n intention_n that_o superiority_n shall_v continue_v in_o their_o succession_n or_o it_o make_v nothing_o to_o the_o purpose_n to_o this_o mr._n lowth_n reply_n that_o at_o this_o rate_n of_o argue_v though_o the_o apostle_n by_o a_o act_n of_o christ_n be_v invest_v with_o the_o ministerial_a authority_n yet_o it_o must_v be_v far_o prove_v that_o it_o be_v christ_n intention_n that_o the_o same_o power_n shall_v continue_v in_o their_o successor_n or_o it_o make_v nothing_o to_o the_o purpose_n for_o a_o settle_a ministry_n and_o the_o same_o argument_n which_o overthrow_v a_o superiority_n of_o churchman_n for_o want_v of_o a_o express_a of_o christ_n intention_n overthrow_v the_o very_a ministry_n itself_o both_o have_v the_o same_o bottom_n and_o alike_a promise_n and_o here_o the_o episcopal_a man_n be_v not_o leave_v alone_o to_o complain_v but_o the_o presbyterian_a may_v honest_o put_v in_o for_o a_o share_n and_o this_o indeed_o be_v a_o fatal_a argument_n for_o it_o overthrow_v the_o whole_a project_n of_o the_o irenicum_fw-la for_o if_o you_o well_o observe_v you_o will_v find_v the_o scheme_n of_o that_o author_n to_o lie_v thus_o he_o assert_v in_o general_a a_o divine_a right_n of_o government_n or_o that_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o christ_n that_o his_o church_n shall_v be_v govern_v one_o way_n or_o other_o but_o then_o as_o for_o any_o particular_a form_n of_o church_n government_n he_o do_v not_o think_v that_o christ_n or_o his_o apostle_n erect_v any_o with_o a_o obligation_n of_o its_o continuance_n but_o that_o it_o be_v leave_v to_o some_o body_n i_o know_v not_o who_o to_o establish_v the_o particular_a form_n according_a to_o the_o necessity_n convenience_n and_o circumstance_n of_o time_n place_n and_o person_n and_o from_o time_n to_o time_n to_o new_a mould_n and_o change_v the_o same_o as_o they_o shall_v find_v cause_n yet_o always_o contain_v themselves_o within_o the_o bound_n of_o what_o the_o author_n think_v lawful_a i_o grant_v that_o he_o be_v not_o always_o true_a to_o this_o but_o the_o whole_a work_n seem_v to_o be_v bottom_v upon_o this_o supposition_n and_o for_o his_o inconsistency_n he_o himself_o may_v take_v care_n of_o they_o now_o the_o argument_n here_o use_v have_v undo_v himself_o and_o be_v level_v not_o only_o against_o the_o divine_a right_n of_o any_o one_o particular_a form_n but_o against_o the_o divine_a right_n of_o a_o ministry_n and_o all_o church_n government_n whatsoever_o neither_o do_v i_o know_v to_o what_o purpose_n we_o shall_v wrangle_v whether_o the_o house_n shall_v be_v build_v in_o this_o or_o that_o form_n or_o shape_n when_o it_o do_v not_o appear_v that_o we_o have_v any_o right_a or_o authority_n either_o to_o build_v any_o at_o all_o or_o to_o enter_v any_o former_o build_v and_o now_o let_v any_o man_n judge_n whether_o this_o be_v a_o effectual_a way_n of_o argue_v either_o for_o the_o re-establishment_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n or_o for_o man_n comply_v with_o it_o but_o though_o this_o be_v enough_o to_o prove_v what_o mr._n lowth_n have_v allege_v yet_o it_o be_v untrue_o say_v of_o the_o letter-maker_n that_o this_o be_v all_o for_o mr._n lowth_n have_v accuse_v the_o author_n of_o the_o irenicum_fw-la that_o notwithstanding_o his_o pretence_n of_o the_o mutability_n of_o church_n government_n he_o have_v invest_v the_o presbyter_n with_o the_o full_a power_n of_o order_n and_o jurisdiction_n and_o that_o he_o have_v perpetual_o fix_v he_o by_o divine_a right_o unalterable_a and_o he_o there_o prove_v his_o charge_n p._n 29._o and_o you_o may_v find_v several_a other_o thing_n in_o mr._n lowth_n letter_n to_o this_o purpose_n to_o which_o i_o refer_v you_o for_o they_o have_v receive_v no_o answer_n i_o be_o no_o further_o at_o present_a concern_v for_o they_o only_o i_o think_v this_o a_o very_a unlikely_a way_n of_o persuade_v the_o establishment_n of_o the_o church_n under_o bishop_n and_o leave_v you_o to_o judge_v let_v the_o author_n design_n be_v what_o it_o will_v whether_o the_o book_n do_v not_o carry_v on_o the_o design_n which_o mr._n lowth_n pretend_v i_o fear_v i_o grow_v troublesome_a to_o you_o but_o now_o my_o hand_n be_v in_o i_o be_o resolve_v to_o follow_v this_o author_n to_o see_v if_o he_o have_v do_v the_o reverend_a dean_n any_o better_a service_n in_o the_o remain_a part_n of_o his_o letter_n and_o the_o next_o thing_n he_o fall_v on_o be_v the_o business_n of_o a_o recantation_n and_o here_o suppose_v what_o i_o have_v read_v in_o the_o former_a part_n of_o the_o letter_n will_v have_v be_v of_o the_o same_o piece_n with_o what_o follow_v i_o expect_v to_o have_v meet_v with_o strange_a tragical_a exclamation_n and_o that_o the_o unreasonableness_n of_o the_o demand_n shall_v have_v be_v bitter_o cry_v out_o against_o but_o i_o be_v quite_o disappoint_v and_o he_o be_v clear_a too_o quick_a for_o we_o for_o he_o say_v that_o a_o recantation_n have_v be_v already_o make_v and_o that_o as_o public_a as_o the_o error_n scandal_n and_o offence_n and_o too_o before_o the_o demand_n be_v make_v this_o language_n i_o confess_v surprise_v i_o it_o seem_v then_o that_o mr._n lowth_n and_o the_o dean_n be_v agree_v and_o do_v not_o know_v it_o what_o pity_n be_v it_o that_o such_o a_o noise_n shall_v be_v make_v all_o over_o the_o kingdom_n and_o such_o disturbance_n among_o church_n of_o england_n man_n about_o a_o quarrel_n between_o two_o peason_n who_o be_v both_o become_v of_o the_o same_o mind_n but_o be_v it_o not_o a_o stark_a shame_n that_o when_o mr._n lowth_n be_v acknowledge_v to_o be_v in_o the_o right_n and_o the_o dean_n have_v recee_v from_o his_o former_a tenet_n to_o come_v up_o to_o a_o opinion_n which_o mr._n lowth_n have_v always_o maintain_v he_o shall_v be_v revile_v and_o exclaim_v against_o in_o all_o place_n for_o this_o with_o as_o much_o fierceness_n and_o bitterness_n as_o if_o he_o have_v set_v the_o church_n on_o fire_n at_o least_o those_o who_o confess_v thus_o much_o aught_o to_o condemn_v the_o practice_n as_o unreasonable_a and_o if_o this_o be_v true_a i_o think_v the_o quarrel_n ought_v to_o be_v at_o a_o end_n but_o now_o i_o be_o afraid_a to_o read_v on_o least_o in_o look_v after_o the_o proof_n of_o this_o i_o shall_v meet_v with_o a_o second_o disappointment_n and_o i_o find_v all_o to_o amount_v to_o little_o better_a than_o a_o mere_a say_v so_o and_o indeed_o much_o thus_o it_o happen_v for_o though_o i_o be_o willing_a to_o persuade_v myself_o that_o the_o learned_a dean_n be_v real_o and_o true_o of_o another_o mind_n and_o have_v quit_v many_o of_o the_o loose_a opinion_n of_o the_o rector_n of_o sutton_n yet_o this_o author_n be_v so_o unfortunate_a in_o the_o proof_n of_o it_o that_o he_o have_v do_v he_o no_o small_a diskindness_n and_o the_o first_o thing_n which_o he_o cite_v from_o the_o several_a conference_n be_v so_o far_o from_o a_o formal_a retractation_n as_o he_o will_v bear_v we_o in_o hand_n that_o it_o be_v indeed_o only_a a_o scurvy_a palliation_n of_o the_o matter_n and_o i_o be_o sorry_a there_o to_o find_v this_o assertion_n that_o what_o proposal_n he_o make_v about_o temper_v episcopacy_n they_o be_v no_o other_o than_o what_o king_n charles_n one_a and_o mr._n thorndike_n have_v make_v before_o he_o how_o no_o
a_o letter_n to_o a_o friend_n in_o answer_n to_o a_o letter_n write_v against_o mr._n lowth_n in_o defence_n of_o dr._n stillingfleet_n london_n print_v and_o be_v to_o be_v sell_v by_o randal_n taylor_n near_o stationers-hall_n 1688._o a_o letter_n to_o a_o friend_n in_o answer_n to_o a_o letter_n write_v against_o mr._n lowth_n sir_n you_o seem_v to_o be_v much_o concern_v that_o such_o considerable_a member_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n shall_v be_v whet_v their_o pen_n against_o each_o other_o whilst_o they_o be_v enclose_v with_o their_o adversary_n and_o i_o think_v every_o good_a man_n will_v bear_v a_o part_n with_o you_o and_o do_v hearty_o wish_v that_o there_o have_v be_v no_o occasion_n or_o that_o it_o can_v be_v take_v away_o but_o since_o you_o require_v my_o thought_n concern_v the_o late_a answerer_n of_o mr._n lowth_n letter_n i_o will_v answer_v your_o request_n with_o as_o much_o brevity_n and_o impartiality_n as_o my_o mean_a skill_n will_v enable_v i_o the_o man_n want_v not_o wit_n but_o indulge_v it_o so_o far_o as_o to_o renounce_v both_o civility_n and_o reason_n good_a manner_n and_o religion_n i_o have_v peruse_v his_o letter_n with_o the_o same_o pleasure_n i_o read_v a_o play_n or_o hear_v a_o prevaricator_n speech_n but_o that_o the_o seriousness_n of_o the_o matter_n wherein_o it_o be_v concern_v be_v a_o continual_a check_n upon_o i_o and_o convert_v that_o pleasure_n into_o grief_n to_o think_v that_o any_o man_n who_o pretend_v to_o gravity_n and_o reverence_n to_o religion_n shall_v allow_v himself_o the_o liberty_n to_o wantonise_v at_o that_o rate_n in_o most_o sacred_a thing_n so_o that_o i_o think_v the_o man_n be_v so_o far_o from_o do_v the_o learned_a dean_n any_o real_a service_n that_o he_o will_v prove_v a_o disparagement_n both_o to_o his_o cause_n and_o person_n and_o the_o more_o for_o this_o reason_n that_o be_v the_o dean_n have_v former_o just_o lash_v mr._n alsap_n for_o his_o lightness_n in_o a_o case_n near_o akin_a to_o this_o it_o will_v seem_v very_o indecent_a for_o he_o now_o to_o set_v up_o a_o jack-pudding_n or_o merry-andrew_n in_o his_o own_o defence_n and_o that_o it_o shall_v come_v forth_o without_o his_o privity_n and_o consent_n scarce_o any_o man_n will_v believe_v who_o consider_v how_o long_o and_o by_o who_o mr._n lowth_n book_n of_o church_n power_n be_v stop_v in_o despite_n of_o all_o the_o interest_n he_o can_v make_v neither_o be_v the_o attempt_n to_o jeer_v truth_n out_o of_o countenance_n less_o intolerable_a at_o this_o time_n when_o it_o be_v apparent_a from_o the_o letter_n itself_o that_o the_o dean_n do_v endeavour_v to_o come_v up_o to_o mr._n lowth_n and_o it_o be_v much_o the_o best_a part_n of_o the_o scribbler_n plea_n to_o own_o it_o in_o his_o behalf_n several_a page_n be_v spend_v mere_o in_o pickeer_v at_o word_n and_o phrase_n without_o one_o syllable_n as_o to_o the_o merit_n of_o the_o cause_n though_o there_o be_v no_o want_n of_o malice_n as_o to_o mr._n lowth_n person_n but_o i_o love_v not_o to_o rake_v in_o canal_n though_o i_o have_v to_o do_v with_o scavenger_n and_o therefore_o shall_v pass_v it_o all_o over_o but_o where_o i_o meet_v with_o any_o thing_n material_a i_o shall_v give_v you_o a_o concise_a account_n of_o my_o thought_n of_o it_o the_o chief_a ground_n of_o this_o bitter_a quarrel_n i_o find_v to_o be_v this_o that_o he_o the_o dean_n be_v imperious_o summon_v and_o little_o less_o than_o command_v viz._n by_o mr._n lowth_n to_o satisfy_v the_o church_n of_o god_n by_o a_o recantation_n as_o public_a as_o his_o error_n scandal_n and_o offence_n this_o latter_a clause_n i_o remember_v in_o mr._n lowth_n book_n but_o the_o imperious_a summons_n be_v another_o interpretation_n and_o the_o little_a less_o than_o command_v be_v add_v by_o the_o author_n lest_o he_o shall_v seem_v to_o do_v nothing_o if_o he_o do_v not_o lay_v on_o more_o load_n but_o in_o what_o manner_n soever_o it_o be_v do_v i_o confess_v that_o in_o one_o respect_v it_o be_v very_o unreasonable_a to_o call_v for_o such_o a_o recantation_n for_o we_o be_v all_o too_o fond_a of_o ourselves_o to_o appear_v against_o ourselves_o but_o when_o a_o man_n have_v get_v a_o name_n in_o the_o world_n be_v admire_v by_o his_o follower_n applaud_v for_o his_o part_n and_o learning_n and_o look_v on_o as_o the_o coriphaeus_n of_o his_o age_n this_o man_n be_v above_o all_o recantation_n and_o it_o be_v well_o if_o he_o do_v not_o think_v himself_o above_o any_o error_n scandal_n or_o offence_n for_o such_o a_o one_o to_o lessen_v himself_o by_o the_o public_a acknowledgement_n of_o error_n be_v such_o a_o prodigious_a piece_n of_o ingenuity_n as_o can_v reasonable_o be_v expect_v and_o indeed_o it_o be_v never_o to_o be_v expect_v from_o any_o but_o those_o who_o can_v be_v content_a to_o take_v the_o shame_n to_o themselves_o that_o god_n may_v have_v the_o glory_n and_o who_o value_n truth_n above_o all_o their_o reputation_n yea_o all_o their_o interest_n in_o the_o world_n and_o such_o be_v rare_a bird_n whether_o they_o have_v pocket_n or_o not_o but_o then_o if_o we_o lie_v aside_o man_n over-dearness_n to_o themselves_o and_o the_o frightful_a tenderness_n of_o their_o reputation_n as_o we_o ought_v in_o this_o case_n and_o look_v into_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o thing_n the_o case_n will_v be_v quite_o alter_v and_o it_o will_v appear_v altogether_o unreasonable_a that_o the_o church_n of_o god_n shall_v be_v wrong_v or_o the_o truth_n suffer_v for_o the_o advancement_n or_o salve_v any_o man_n reputation_n and_o if_o any_o offend_v in_o this_o kind_n they_o ought_v to_o give_v satisfaction_n though_o few_o be_v willing_a to_o do_v it_o i_o have_v no_o prejudice_n against_o the_o dean_n person_n and_o shall_v ready_o do_v he_o all_o the_o right_n i_o can_v i_o acknowledge_v that_o he_o have_v take_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o pain_n in_o defence_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n i_o honour_v he_o as_o a_o man_n of_o extraordinary_a part_n learning_n and_o industry_n second_o to_o few_o if_o any_o of_o his_o age._n but_o do_v this_o secure_v he_o from_o error_n do_v this_o make_v he_o infallible_a be_v we_o so_o zealous_a to_o pull_v down_o the_o pope_n at_o rome_n that_o we_o may_v set_v up_o another_o at_o st._n paul_n or_o have_v not_o mean_a man_n sometime_o correct_v the_o error_n of_o far_o great_a apollinaris_n be_v a_o man_n of_o such_o curious_a part_n and_o learning_n that_o he_o be_v the_o admiration_n of_o his_o contemporary_n and_o he_o do_v the_o church_n great_a service_n by_o his_o clear_a and_o convince_a way_n of_o write_v against_o heretic_n and_o yet_o as_o some_o think_v the_o very_a confidence_n in_o his_o part_n betray_v he_o into_o a_o foul_a error_n and_o even_o those_o who_o pity_v he_o who_o admire_v he_o who_o acknowledge_v themselves_o much_o inferior_a to_o he_o write_v against_o his_o error_n and_o have_v transmit_v he_o to_o posterity_n brand_v with_o the_o name_n of_o a_o heretic_n tertullian_n for_o acuteness_n of_o part_n and_o variety_n of_o learning_n doubtless_o outstripped_a all_o the_o man_n of_o his_o age_n and_o i_o question_v whether_o any_o thing_n write_v in_o behalf_n of_o christianity_n against_o heathen_n have_v outdo_v his_o apology_n or_o any_o thing_n have_v be_v more_o convince_o pen_v against_o all_o sort_n of_o heretic_n than_o his_o book_n de_fw-fr praescriptionibus_fw-la and_o yet_o this_o very_a man_n not_o without_o much_o ado_n have_v escape_v the_o title_n of_o a_o heretic_n himself_o if_o he_o have_v escape_v it_o however_o it_o be_v notorious_a that_o he_o maintain_v some_o such_o foul_a error_n as_o be_v reject_v on_o all_o hand_n in_o these_o we_o may_v see_v that_o the_o church_n of_o god_n do_v not_o suffer_v the_o singular_a part_n or_o even_o merit_v of_o any_o man_n to_o patronize_v his_o error_n but_o in_o that_o cafe_z always_o leave_v he_o to_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o cause_n and_o perhaps_o it_o be_v most_o reasonable_a that_o the_o more_o considerable_a the_o person_n be_v the_o more_o severe_a trial_n he_o shall_v be_v put_v upon_o because_o the_o authority_n of_o his_o person_n be_v more_o like_a to_o make_v the_o error_n spread_v than_o if_o it_o come_v from_o another_o man._n and_o in_o this_o particular_a even_o the_o author_n of_o the_o letter_n though_o like_o the_o fish_n saepia_n he_o muddle_v himself_o in_o his_o own_o ink_n yet_o be_v force_v sometime_o in_o downright_a term_n to_o confess_v that_o the_o dean_n have_v be_v guilty_a of_o error_n in_o that_o very_a matter_n wherein_o mr._n lowth_n accuse_v he_o and_o when_o he_o do_v his_o best_a to_o wash_v it_o off_o he_o do_v only_o plaster_v the_o sore_a over_o to_o make_v this_o good_a i_o
lowth_n seem_v to_o i_o a_o thing_n utter_o unaccountable_a but_o from_o the_o church_n abound_v with_o man_n of_o latitudinarian_a and_o erastian_n principle_n who_o be_v resolve_v to_o maintain_v it_o be_v no_o unknown_a thing_n that_o bishop_n bilson_n let_v drop_v some_o passage_n from_o his_o pen_n which_o may_v be_v interpret_v to_o savour_v too_o much_o of_o commonwealth_n principle_n and_o be_v particular_o distasteful_a to_o king_n james_n the_o first_o and_o yet_o that_o wise_a king_n not_o only_o suffer_v he_o to_o enjoy_v the_o rich_a bishopric_n in_o his_o kingdom_n but_o seem_v to_o afford_v he_o some_o particular_a favour_n and_o countenance_n this_o some_o schismatic_n afterward_o lay_v hold_n of_o and_o make_v use_v of_o it_o to_o their_o advantage_n against_o who_o our_o royal_a martyr_n thus_o defend_v his_o father_n in_o his_o three_o paper_n to_o mr._n henderson_n as_o for_o bishop_n bilson_n i_o remember_v very_o well_o what_o opinion_n the_o king_n my_o father_n have_v of_o he_o for_o those_o opinion_n and_o how_o he_o show_v he_o some_o favour_n in_o hope_n of_o his_o recantation_n as_o his_o good_a nature_n make_v he_o do_v many_o thing_n of_o that_o kind_n and_o have_v this_o occur_v to_o the_o dean_n memory_n as_o it_o can_v not_o escape_v his_o read_n it_o may_v have_v be_v a_o strong_a temptation_n upon_o he_o to_o have_v draw_v the_o father_n into_o his_o party_n as_o well_o as_o he_o have_v do_v the_o son_n and_o indeed_o they_o be_v both_o much_o alike_o on_o his_o side_n but_o i_o think_v that_o it_o better_o serve_v to_o show_v that_o respect_n to_o man_n person_n and_o approbation_n of_o their_o opinion_n be_v very_o distant_a thing_n and_o that_o he_o who_o pass_v judgement_n upon_o no_o better_a evidence_n follow_v a_o very_a fallacious_a rule_n from_o this_o we_o be_v lead_v to_o consider_v the_o design_n of_o this_o unlucky_a book_n which_o i_o can_v wish_v have_v never_o be_v design_v at_o all_o and_o we_o be_v tell_v that_o but_o two_o design_n can_v be_v tolerable_o pretend_v the_o one_o be_v the_o dean_n own_o the_o other_o mr._n lowth_n have_v make_v for_o he_o the_o one_o be_v applaud_v the_o other_o insolent_o and_o scornful_o condemn_v they_o be_v represent_v as_o inconsistent_a with_o each_o other_o and_o yet_o with_o this_o author_n leave_n i_o think_v it_o not_o impossible_a that_o they_o may_v be_v both_o true_a and_o first_o i_o must_v tell_v you_o that_o a_o man_n though_o very_o zealous_a and_o serious_a may_v be_v mistake_v as_o to_o the_o justice_n and_o goodness_n of_o his_o own_o design_n and_o may_v actual_o design_n that_o which_o be_v real_o evil_a and_o effect_v it_o too_o whilst_o he_o think_v to_o do_v great_a good_a thus_o it_o be_v with_o no_o less_o a_o person_n than_o st._n paul_n before_o his_o conversion_n in_o persecute_v the_o christian_n and_o our_o bless_a saviour_n himself_o tell_v we_o john_n 16._o 2._o the_o time_n come_v that_o whosoever_o kill_v you_o will_v think_v he_o do_v god_n service_n and_o i_o believe_v the_o author_n of_o the_o letter_n will_v be_v very_o unwilling_a to_o have_v his_o throat_n cut_v with_o such_o a_o religious_a design_n notwithstanding_o he_o be_v so_o brisk_a a_o advocate_n for_o man_n well_o meaning_n and_o there_o be_v not_o a_o presbyterian_a independent_a anabaptist_n quaker_n or_o any_o sectary_n whatsoever_o who_o serious_o desire_v and_o endeavour_v to_o ruin_v the_o church_n of_o england_n but_o they_o think_v they_o design_v well_o and_o our_o author_n if_o he_o please_v may_v undertake_v their_o defence_n well_o but_o the_o dean_n have_v solemn_o profoss_v that_o his_o design_n be_v to_o heal_v the_o wound_n of_o the_o church_n now_o though_o i_o never_o like_v the_o plaster_n yet_o i_o be_o willing_a to_o believe_v this_o to_o have_v be_v his_o design_n and_o it_o be_v a_o very_a christian_a and_o noble_a design_n but_o then_o in_o the_o next_o place_n we_o be_v to_o consider_v that_o a_o man_n who_o carry_v on_o a_o very_a just_a and_o laudable_a design_n may_v yet_o proceed_v in_o such_o untoward_a method_n and_o use_v such_o unagreeable_a and_o unhappy_a mean_n that_o he_o may_v not_o only_o miscarry_v as_o to_o his_o design_n but_o may_v do_v as_o much_o hurt_n as_o he_o design_v good_a and_o in_o this_o case_n it_o be_v apparent_a that_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a design_n the_o one_o personal_a the_o other_o natural_a the_o one_o which_o the_o person_n intend_v and_o fail_v in_o the_o other_o that_o which_o the_o mean_n he_o use_v natural_o tend_v to_o and_o therefore_o when_o mr._n lowth_n say_v that_o the_o design_n be_v mere_o or_o most_o or_o what_o you_o will_v against_o the_o re-establishment_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n i_o can_v believe_v that_o he_o mean_v to_o enter_v into_o the_o dean_n thought_n but_o that_o he_o do_v judge_v what_o be_v the_o natural_a tendency_n of_o his_o argument_n and_o so_o let_v the_o dean_n design_n be_v what_o it_o will_v he_o may_v be_v in_o the_o right_a as_o to_o the_o design_n of_o the_o book_n and_o whether_o he_o be_v or_o not_o must_v be_v try_v by_o the_o proof_n he_o bring_v for_o it_o and_o our_o author_n confident_o assert_n that_o all_o that_o he_o mr._n lowth_n offer_v in_o proof_n of_o this_o be_v his_o the_o dean_n deny_v episcopacy_n to_o be_v by_o the_o law_n of_o christ_n always_o bind_v and_o immutable_a and_o that_o he_o attribute_n too_o much_o power_n to_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n in_o ecclesiastical_a affair_n and_o this_o say_v our_o author_n will_v be_v free_o confess_v a_o pretty_a fair_a confession_n and_o be_v it_o not_o a_o admirable_a way_n to_o procure_v the_o establishment_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n by_o plead_v that_o episcopacy_n may_v be_v turn_v out_o of_o door_n at_o the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n for_o suppose_v the_o mutability_n of_o episcopacy_n and_o the_o power_n of_o the_o magistrate_n there_o assert_v this_o will_v be_v the_o natural_a consequence_n and_o be_v it_o not_o hard_o that_o a_o man_n shall_v confess_v mr._n lowth_n to_o be_v in_o the_o right_n and_o in_o the_o same_o breath_n revile_v he_o but_o our_o author_n have_v a_o trick_n to_o prove_v that_o this_o argument_n will_v not_o hold_v and_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o will_v turn_v the_o table_n and_o suppose_v mr._n lowth_n a_o zealous_a presbyterian_a and_o then_o because_o the_o irenicum_fw-la deny_v that_o government_n to_o be_v immutable_a as_o well_o as_o episcopal_n and_o give_v away_o some_o of_o the_o power_n to_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n which_o be_v wont_a to_o be_v assume_v by_o their_o classical_a and_o synodical_a assembly_n he_o may_v have_v make_v the_o same_o complaint_n in_o favour_n of_o the_o consistory_n etc._n etc._n very_o true_a and_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o mr._n lowth_n will_v have_v do_v so_o have_v he_o be_v such_o a_o zealous_a presbyterian_a or_o else_o he_o must_v have_v be_v false_a to_o his_o principle_n but_o can_v not_o this_o man_n turn_v the_o table_n without_o turn_v mr._n lowth_n into_o a_o presbyterian_a i_o pretend_v not_o to_o much_o skill_n at_o table_n but_o i_o have_v think_v that_o those_o who_o turn_v the_o table_n have_v leave_v the_o person_n as_o they_o be_v and_o if_o he_o have_v do_v so_o he_o may_v have_v turn_v and_o overturn_v his_o table_n till_o his_o heart_n have_v ache_v before_o he_o can_v have_v make_v mr._n lowth_n open_v his_o mouth_n in_o favour_n of_o the_o consistory_n though_o the_o dean_n design_n and_o argument_n have_v be_v never_o so_o violent_a against_o it_o and_o let_v we_o suppose_v it_o true_a which_o this_o author_n allege_v that_o the_o design_n of_o the_o irenicum_fw-la may_v be_v as_o easy_o level_v against_o the_o presbyterian_a as_o the_o episcopal_a church_n yet_o
