mystery_n unto_o we_o there_o be_v i_o confess_v a_o distinction_n between_o faith_n and_o manner_n when_o we_o come_v to_o sort_n and_o sever_v the_o thing_n contain_v in_o the_o word_n into_o the_o kind_n of_o duty_n impose_v but_o when_o we_o consider_v they_o in_o the_o rule_n and_o principle_n of_o the_o word_n itself_o from_o which_o the_o conscience_n be_v certain_o inform_v and_o bind_v there_o be_v no_o difference_n but_o they_o be_v all_o of_o faith_n alike_o even_o as_o the_o same_o sap_n which_o in_o the_o branch_n distinct_a unto_o leaf_n and_o blossom_n be_v in_o the_o root_n but_o one_o whence_o it_o follow_v that_o nothing_o can_v be_v proper_o canonical_a unto_o manner_n but_o the_o same_o be_v first_o canonical_a unto_o faith_n for_o we_o therefore_o stand_v undoubted_o persuade_v that_o thus_o we_o ought_v to_o do_v because_o we_o first_o believe_v that_o god_n himself_o will_v have_v we_o to_o do_v so_o and_o have_v reveal_v it_o to_o we_o as_o his_o will_n by_o this_o it_o seem_v evident_a that_o the_o distinction_n between_o canon_n of_o faith_n and_o of_o manner_n as_o use_v by_o the_o bishop_n be_v idle_a and_o impertinent_a and_o that_o therefore_o notwithstanding_o all_o have_v be_v say_v by_o mr._n hutton_n it_o remain_v as_o a_o undoubted_a truth_n that_o the_o service_n book_n do_v consider_v the_o apocrypha_n as_o canonical_a as_o a_o part_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n the_o pure_a word_n of_o god_n which_o be_v no_o more_o than_o what_o may_v be_v infer_v from_o their_o confound_v the_o apocryphal_a with_o the_o canonical_a book_n as_o may_v be_v see_v in_o their_o great_a bible_n authorize_v to_o be_v read_v where_o divide_v the_o book_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n into_o legal_a historical_a sapiential_a and_o prophetical_a in_o the_o historical_a they_o place_v 19_o book_n among_o which_o they_o reckon_v the_o three_o and_o four_o book_n of_o esdras_n the_o book_n of_o tobith_n and_o judith_n the_o two_o book_n of_o maccabee_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o chapter_n of_o esther_n make_v the_o book_n of_o esther_n to_o consist_v of_o 16_o chapter_n and_o then_o to_o be_v part_n of_o that_o book_n in_o the_o sapiential_a they_o place_v 5_o book_n whereof_o they_o reckon_v the_o book_n of_o wisdom_n and_o ecclesiasticus_fw-la for_o two_o call_v the_o book_n of_o wisdom_n the_o wisdom_n of_o solomon_n in_o the_o prophetical_a they_o place_v 18_o book_n of_o which_o they_o reckon_v baruch_n the_o prophet_n and_o susanna_n bell_n and_o the_o dragon_n make_v the_o same_o all_o one_o with_o daniel_n consist_v of_o 14_o chapter_n what_o can_v be_v more_o clear_a than_o this_o say_v the_o defender_n of_o the_o reason_n etc._n etc._n where_o to_o say_v the_o same_o author_n if_o we_o add_v the_o book_n of_o homily_n how_o it_o divers_a time_n call_v these_o apocryphal_a book_n holy_a scripture_n in_o the_o same_o sense_n wherein_o the_o scripture_n of_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n be_v so_o call_v say_v in_o the_o allege_v tobith_n and_o ecclesiasticus_fw-la the_o holy_a ghost_n speak_v so_o in_o the_o scripture_n thereby_o give_v the_o same_o authority_n and_o title_n with_o zechary_n luke_n 1._o and_o the_o author_n to_o the_o hebrew_n ch._n 3._o 7._o give_v to_o the_o holy_a prophet_n in_o their_o writing_n of_o place_n out_o of_o the_o old_a testament_n thus_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o according_a to_o the_o service_n book_n and_o the_o sentiment_n of_o some_o great_a bishop_n the_o great_a bible_n and_o book_n of_o homily_n the_o apocrypha_n be_v consider_v as_o a_o part_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n the_o which_o truth_n abide_v in_o its_o strength_n notwithstanding_o what_o be_v argue_v from_o the_o book_n of_o article_n where_o it_o be_v sufficient_o manifest_a that_o the_o apocrypha_n be_v no_o part_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n for_o this_o do_v but_o discover_v the_o contradiction_n there_o be_v between_o the_o book_n of_o article_n and_o the_o service_n book_n etc._n etc._n whereby_o the_o nonconformist_n be_v but_o supply_v with_o a_o unanswerable_a argument_n against_o subscription_n which_o i_o will_v give_v in_o the_o word_n of_o the_o devonshire_n minister_n viz._n that_o to_o subscribe_v to_o the_o service_n book_n be_v contrary_a to_o our_o subscription_n to_o the_o book_n of_o article_n the_o 6_o article_n whereof_o under_o the_o name_n of_o holy_a scripture_n understand_v only_o the_o canonical_a book_n of_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n there_o mention_v whereof_o the_o apocrypha_fw-la book_n be_v none_o and_o therefore_o they_o conclude_v they_o can_v safe_o subscribe_v because_o they_o shall_v subscribe_v to_o two_o book_n one_o contrary_a to_o another_o this_o be_v so_o clear_a namely_o that_o the_o apochripha_n book_n be_v appoint_v to_o be_v read_v as_o a_o part_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n and_o as_o the_o canon_n and_o rule_n of_o manner_n i_o will_v proceed_v to_o show_v what_o have_v be_v object_v against_o it_o not_o that_o i_o will_v trouble_v the_o reader_n with_o all_o but_o only_o with_o two_o or_o three_o particular_n 1._o hereby_o their_o error_n who_o account_v these_o book_n canonical_a scripture_n be_v confirm_v this_o be_v say_v the_o lincoln_n abridgement_n the_o only_a reason_n that_o move_v the_o three_o council_n of_o carthage_n to_o decree_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v hold_v canonical_a because_o they_o have_v receive_v from_o the_o father_n that_o they_o be_v to_o be_v read_v in_o the_o church_n and_o bellarmine_n make_v this_o one_o of_o his_o best_a reason_n to_o prove_v that_o the_o authority_n of_o these_o book_n be_v divine_a and_o canonical_a because_o they_o be_v now_o and_o have_v be_v of_o old_a read_v by_o the_o church_n in_o the_o public_a assembly_n so_o do_v the_o papist_n in_o that_o book_n they_o have_v late_o publish_v call_v the_o three_o conversion_n of_o england_n and_o gregory_n martin_n reason_v thus_o their_o own_o service_n book_n say_v he_o appoint_v these_o book_n of_o toby_n and_o ecclesiasticus_fw-la to_o be_v read_v for_o holy_a scripture_n as_o the_o other_o do_v they_o read_v in_o their_o church_n apocryphal_a and_o superstitious_a book_n for_o holy_a scripture_n so_o clear_v it_o be_v that_o the_o very_a papist_n be_v confirm_v in_o their_o error_n by_o this_o practice_n of_o the_o church_n 2._o the_o read_v these_o book_n though_o but_o as_o the_o canon_n and_o rule_n manner_n tend_v so_o very_a much_o to_o the_o corrupt_a the_o manner_n of_o man_n in_o some_o thing_n that_o the_o dissenter_n can_v in_o no_o way_n approve_v of_o it_o in_o the_o defence_n of_o the_o devonshire_n and_o cornish_a minister_n reason_n it_o be_v thus_o argue_v if_o the_o apocryphal_a book_n be_v canonical_a as_o teach_v manner_n than_o whatsoever_o point_n of_o manner_n those_o book_n do_v commend_v unto_o we_o either_o by_o precept_n or_o allow_v example_n we_o not_o only_o may_v but_o must_v observe_v it_o for_o conscience_n sake_n as_o a_o divine_a rule_n or_o canon_n it_o be_v true_a hereby_o a_o late_a order_n which_o be_v that_o the_o wicked_a dissenter_n if_o poor_a receive_v not_o alm_n will_v be_v defend_v for_o it_o be_v but_o according_a to_o the_o command_n in_o ecclesiasticus_fw-la 12._o 5._o where_o it_o be_v express_o say_v give_v not_o to_o the_o ungodly_a hold_v back_o thy_o bread_n and_o give_v it_o not_o unto_o he_o lest_o he_o overmaster_v thou_o thereby_o but_o how_o agreeable_a this_o precept_n be_v unto_o the_o pure_a word_n of_o god_n or_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n let_v a_o common_a capacity_n judge_n but_o though_o this_o practice_n be_v enjoin_v to_o the_o defence_n of_o that_o but_o now_o mention_v order_n yet_o there_o be_v other_o allow_v and_o high_o approve_v practice_n which_o be_v most_o odious_a in_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o dissenter_n and_o be_v real_o abhor_v by_o all_o but_o bloody_a papist_n for_o judith_n trick_v up_o herself_o on_o purpose_n to_o tempt_v and_o ensnare_v the_o heart_n of_o holofernes_n to_o uncleanness_n her_o compass_v a_o irreligious_a governor_n by_o fraud_n by_o lie_n by_o oath_n and_o protestation_n in_o the_o name_n of_o god_n to_o the_o end_n she_o may_v the_o more_o assure_o murder_v he_o be_v not_o only_o a_o allow_v but_o a_o practice_n high_o approve_v of_o by_o the_o book_n of_o judith_n that_o be_v appoint_v to_o be_v read_v in_o october_n the_o child_n of_o israel_n though_o now_o return_v from_o the_o babylonian_a captivity_n yet_o to_o the_o very_a time_n holofernes_n be_v murder_v by_o judith_n they_o remain_v under_o the_o government_n of_o the_o emperor_n the_o emperor_n though_o a_o idolater_n yet_o their_o lawful_a governor_n who_o government_n they_o shall_v not_o have_v shake_v off_o by_o fraud_n by_o lie_n equivocation_n and_o other_o sinful_a practice_n which_o yet_o judith_n do_v to_o the_o gain_v the_o great_a applause_n and_o
only_a form_n of_o prayer_n to_o be_v use_v in_o public_a ii_o but_o to_o be_v more_o particular_a there_o be_v many_o among_o the_o dissenter_n who_o be_v furnish_v with_o such_o argument_n as_o the_o reader_n may_v find_v in_o the_o abridgement_n of_o that_o book_n which_o the_o minister_n of_o lincoln_n diocese_n deliver_v to_o the_o king_n anno_fw-la 1605._o as_o also_o in_o a_o part_n of_o the_o register_n and_o among_o the_o reason_n for_o refusal_n of_o subscription_n exhibit_v to_o cotton_n bishop_n of_o exeter_n by_o the_o devonshire_n and_o cornish_a ministry_n and_o in_o several_a other_o discourse_n as_o in_o bayly_n parallel_n of_o the_o liturgy_n with_o the_o mass-book_n ames_n his_o fresh_a suit_n against_o ceremony_n etc._n etc._n the_o which_o have_v fix_v such_o strong_a conviction_n on_o the_o conscience_n of_o some_o dissenter_n concern_v the_o unlawfulness_n of_o the_o present_a liturgy_n that_o they_o can_v safe_o join_v with_o any_o in_o the_o use_n of_o it_o though_o some_o who_o have_v not_o receive_v such_o powerful_a impression_n from_o the_o weight_n of_o those_o argument_n can_v read_v the_o common_a prayer_n and_o join_v with_o such_o as_o do_v to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v save_v themselves_o from_o the_o severity_n of_o penal_a law_n yet_o other_o dissenter_n will_v rather_o submit_v themselves_o to_o the_o great_a extremity_n than_o venture_n to_o dishonour_n god_n by_o do_v what_o they_o be_v convince_v be_v a_o sin_n that_o the_o reader_n may_v be_v move_v to_o entertain_v some_o charitable_a thought_n concern_v such_o person_n and_o that_o the_o common_a objection_n that_o be_v lay_v in_o against_o their_o nonconformity_n which_o be_v humour_n and_o fancy_n and_o a_o peevish_a obstinacy_n may_v be_v full_o answer_v i_o will_v give_v a_o historical_a account_n of_o some_o of_o those_o argument_n which_o do_v so_o full_o convince_v some_o dissenter_n that_o they_o can_v without_o lay_v a_o unnatural_a violence_n on_o their_o family_n conform_v argument_n i._n i._o they_o be_v persuade_v that_o according_a to_o the_o rubric_n the_o same_o honour_n be_v put_v on_o the_o apocryphal_a book_n which_o be_v due_a alone_a to_o the_o sacred_a scripture_n for_o they_o be_v appoint_v to_o be_v read_v as_o a_o part_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n without_o any_o note_n of_o difference_n from_o the_o canonical_a in_o a_o discourse_n before_o the_o common_a prayer_n concern_v the_o service_n of_o the_o church_n it_o be_v assert_v that_o nothing_o be_v ordain_v to_o be_v read_v but_o the_o very_a pure_a word_n of_o god_n the_o holy_a scripture_n or_o that_o which_o be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o same_o beside_o this_o after_o the_o order_n how_o the_o psalter_n be_v to_o be_v read_v it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o title_n how_o the_o rest_n of_o holy_a scripture_n be_v to_o be_v read_v under_o which_o title_n several_a order_n be_v to_o be_v find_v namely_o 1._o the_o old_a testament_n be_v appoint_v for_o the_o first_o lesson_n at_o morning_n and_o evening_n prayer_n so_o as_o the_o most_o part_n thereof_o will_v be_v read_v every_o year_n once_o and_o in_o the_o 3d._a order_n it_o be_v say_v that_o to_o know_v what_o lesson_n shall_v be_v read_v every_o day_n look_v for_o the_o day_n of_o the_o month_n in_o the_o calendar_n follow_v and_o there_o you_o shall_v find_v the_o chapter_n that_o shall_v be_v read_v for_o the_o lesson_n both_o at_o morning_n and_o evening_n prayer_n and_o in_o the_o rubric_n after_o the_o psalm_n be_v read_v it_o be_v order_v that_o then_o shall_v be_v read_v distinct_o with_o a_o audible_a voice_n the_o first_o lesson_n take_v out_o of_o the_o old_a testament_n as_o it_o be_v appoint_v in_o the_o calendar_n whereby_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o what_o be_v appoint_v in_o the_o calendar_n to_o be_v read_v for_o the_o first_o lesson_n be_v consider_v as_o a_o part_n of_o the_o old_a testament_n the_o holy_a scripture_n the_o pure_a word_n of_o god_n but_o the_o apocryphal_a book_n be_v in_o the_o calendar_n appoint_v to_o be_v read_v for_o first_o lesson_n for_o almost_o two_o month_n together_o even_o from_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o september_n until_o november_n 24_o beside_o the_o holy_a day_n on_o which_o these_o book_n be_v appoint_v to_o be_v read_v to_o which_o add_v that_o this_o be_v do_v to_o the_o constant_a neglect_n of_o read_v a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o sacred_a scripture_n namely_o the_o two_o book_n of_o chronicle_n solomon_n song_n and_o a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o revelation_n that_o it_o be_v the_o appointment_n of_o the_o church_n to_o read_v the_o apocryphal_a book_n as_o a_o part_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n be_v far_a confirm_v by_o archbishop_n bancroft_n in_o the_o conference_n hold_v at_o hampton_n court_n where_o as_o the_o abridgement_n have_v it_o he_o tax_v jerom_n for_o call_v these_o book_n apocrypha_fw-la and_o say_v he_o be_v the_o first_o that_o give_v they_o that_o name_n and_o call_v his_o objection_n against_o they_o the_o old_a cavil_n of_o the_o jew_n and_o the_o bishop_n of_o winchester_n affirm_v at_o the_o same_o time_n that_o they_o must_v needs_o be_v hold_v canonici_fw-la ad_fw-la informandos_fw-la mores_fw-la canonical_a for_o the_o information_n of_o manner_n to_o these_o i_o will_v add_v what_o mr._n hutton_n in_o his_o answer_n unto_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o minister_n of_o devon_n and_o cornwall_n to_o this_o very_a objection_n they_o be_v say_v he_o call_v holy_a scripture_n in_o a_o signification_n at_o large_a because_o the_o subject_n they_o entreat_v of_o be_v god_n his_o love_n power_n our_o sanctification_n and_o obedience_n to_o he_o and_o they_o may_v be_v hold_v canonical_a wholesome_a doctrine_n be_v thence_o deduce_v though_o not_o simple_o of_o themselves_o yet_o wherein_o they_o agree_v with_o the_o canon_n as_o also_o because_o they_o may_v serve_v as_o they_o always_o heretofore_o have_v do_v for_o a_o rule_n to_o direct_v and_o order_v our_o conversation_n aright_o in_o this_o answer_n though_o he_o seem_v without_o the_o approbation_n of_o the_o rubric_n to_o make_v a_o difference_n between_o the_o sacred_a scripture_n and_o the_o apocrypha_fw-la book_n yet_o at_o length_n fall_v in_o with_o the_o bishop_n of_o winchester_n assert_v that_o they_o be_v a_o canon_n or_o rule_n to_o direct_v our_o conversation_n aright_o but_o in_o opposition_n hereunto_o it_o be_v general_o by_o sound_a protestant_n assert_v 1._o that_o the_o apocryphal_a book_n be_v not_o a_o part_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n the_o pure_a word_n of_o god_n 2._o that_o there_o be_v several_a thing_n appoint_v to_o be_v read_v which_o be_v not_o agreeable_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n nor_o can_v be_v defend_v by_o any_o sound_a protestant_n to_o make_v this_o point_n the_o more_o clear_a i_o will_v give_v the_o reader_n a_o account_n of_o what_o be_v reply_v to_o the_o distinction_n of_o the_o bishop_n of_o winchester_n about_o the_o canon_n of_o faith_n and_o manner_n and_o then_o offer_v what_o argument_n have_v be_v urge_v against_o this_o practice_n of_o the_o church_n in_o the_o second_o part_n of_o the_o defence_n of_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o devonshire_n and_o cornish_a minister_n it_o be_v thus_o reply_v to_o the_o aforesaid_a distinction_n but_o that_o we_o may_v far_o see_v how_o heartless_a and_o unsound_a this_o distinction_n of_o canonical_a for_o manner_n but_o not_o for_o faith_n be_v let_v we_o observe_v how_o they_o here_o make_v a_o distinction_n of_o faith_n and_o manner_n where_o none_o be_v for_o all_o doctrine_n of_o god_n word_n be_v in_o this_o respect_n doctrine_n of_o faith_n whether_o they_o concern_v matter_n of_o believe_v or_o of_o other_o conversation_n of_o life_n wherefore_o the_o apostle_n have_v couple_v they_o together_o in_o that_o place_n to_o timothy_n say_v all_o scripture_n give_v by_o inspiration_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n show_v we_o thereby_o that_o upon_o one_o and_o the_o same_o divine_a revelation_n our_o knowledge_n and_o practice_n both_o must_v be_v ground_v and_o i_o will_v entreat_v these_o man_n that_o give_v we_o this_o distinction_n to_o tell_v we_o whether_o it_o be_v not_o a_o point_n of_o faith_n that_o we_o must_v worship_v one_o god_n and_o he_o after_o his_o own_o manner_n reverence_v his_o name_n and_o keep_v his_o sabbath_n etc._n etc._n and_o whether_o it_o be_v not_o a_o point_n of_o faith_n that_o we_o must_v honour_v our_o parent_n and_o superior_n that_o we_o must_v not_o kill_v commit_v adultery_n steal_v slander_n covet_v and_o whether_o our_o conscience_n be_v not_o bind_v in_o these_o thing_n by_o the_o divine_a testimony_n as_o well_o as_o in_o any_o point_n of_o our_o understanding_n sure_o unless_o our_o divinity_n fail_v all_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v the_o object_n of_o faith_n that_o as_o well_o which_o direct_v to_o manner_n as_o that_o which_o reveal_v

many_o who_o be_v as_o full_o persuade_v that_o the_o conformist_n do_v err_v as_o the_o conformist_n can_v be_v that_o they_o do_v so_o this_o be_v their_o case_n the_o question_n be_v whether_o notwithstanding_o these_o plain_a conviction_n of_o conscience_n they_o must_v conform_v and_o act_v contrary_a to_o their_o conviction_n whether_o they_o may_v safe_o sin_v against_o god_n to_o the_o
