understand_v if_o he_o right_o conceive_v scripture_n what_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v by_o the_o book_n of_o scripture_n what_o scripture_n be_v the_o very_a principle_n and_o doctrine_n contain_v in_o those_o writing_n for_o example_n here_o be_v one_o principle_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n gen._n 17._o 4._o god_n make_v a_o conuenant_n with_o abraham_n and_o his_o seed_n for_o ever_o another_o in_o the_o new_a joan._n 1._o 14._o the_o word_n be_v make_v flesh._n answer_v i_o beseech_v you_o can_v any_o man_n true_o affirm_v that_o these_o two_o principle_n the_o like_a be_v of_o innumerable_a other_o contain_v in_o scripture_n stand_v not_o firm_a upon_o god_n infallible_a testimony_n when_o it_o be_v manifest_a the_o whole_a christian_a world_n be_v oblige_v to_o believe_v they_o with_o a_o faith_n ground_v upon_o the_o same_o infallible_a testimony_n that_o reveal_v they_o deny_v principle_n of_o religion_n deny_v it_o be_v therefore_o no_o little_a oversight_n in_o mr_n stillingfleet_n to_o speak_v here_o of_o the_o principle_n of_o the_o jewish_a and_o christian_a religion_n contain_v in_o a_o book_n call_v scripture_n and_o positive_o to_o assert_v these_o can_v be_v believe_v upon_o a_o divine_a testimony_n this_o certain_o be_v not_o defensible_a 36._o some_o may_v yet_o reply_v two_o thing_n be_v here_o to_o be_v consider_v first_o the_o bare_a letter_n or_o outward_a word_n of_o scripture_n and_o these_o we_o believe_v not_o upon_o divine_a revelation_n but_o have_v they_o from_o universal_a tradition_n or_o the_o consent_n of_o nation_n diflinguish_v an_o answerto_o such_o as_o here_o diflinguish_v the_o second_o be_v the_o sense_n or_o divine_a doctrine_n which_o these_o outward_a sign_n or_o exterior_a word_n convey_v to_o us._n now_o this_o sense_n or_o the_o interior_a doctrine_n of_o scripture_n as_o contradistinct_a from_o the_o bare_a outward_a letter_n we_o pure_o believe_v upon_o the_o divine_a testimony_n cast_v the_o assent_n give_v to_o the_o word_n upon_o sense_n between_o the_o bare_a word_n and_o the_o sense_n other_o foreign_a principle_n i_o believe_v mr_n stillingfleet_n elsewhere_o say_v some_o such_o thing_n as_o this_o or_o must_v say_v it_o contra._n 1._o the_o mere_a outward_a word_n though_o pure_a be_v no_o book_n of_o scripture_n and_o as_o separate_v from_o the_o sense_n and_o interior_a doctrine_n be_v neither_o principle_n of_o the_o jewish_a or_o christian_a religion_n nor_o in_o rigour_n god_n word_n for_o god_n never_o speak_v nor_o inspire_v other_o to_o write_v word_n but_o he_o joint_o convey_v with_o they_o his_o own_o sense_n and_o doctrine_n also_o and_o methinks_v its_o very_a hard_a to_o believe_v this_o doctrine_n this_o be_v my_o belove_a son_n as_o god_n sacred_a word_n and_o not_o to_o believe_v those_o very_a word_n to_o come_v from_o god_n upon_o the_o same_o divine_a motive_n which_o support's_n the_o doctrine_n moses_n say_v our_o saviour_n john_n 5._o 47._o have_v write_v of_o divine_a word_n be_v divine_a i_o and_o if_o you_o will_v not_o believe_v his_o write_n how_o will_v you_o believe_v my_o word_n these_o outward_a sign_n therefore_o the_o very_a word_n of_o truth_n call_v by_o the_o apostle_n 1._o thess_n 2._o 13._o verbum_fw-la auditus_fw-la dei_fw-la word_n of_o hear_v or_o hear_v be_v in_o very_a deed_n the_o the_o testimony_n reveal_v the_o matter_n bebelieve_v and_o final_o the_o evidence_n whereby_o that_o testimony_n be_v bring_v to_o light_n now_o all_o our_o difficulty_n be_v concern_v the_o evidence_n of_o this_o divine_a testimony_n whereupon_o we_o believe_v any_o mystery_n and_o we_o ask_v from_o whence_o mr_n stillingfleet_n take_v his_o evidence_n he_o have_v you_o se_n abundance_n of_o it_o wherewith_o to_o prove_v that_o god_n ever_o say_v the_o divine_a word_n be_v make_v flesh_n 39_o the_o question_n seem_v reasonable_a because_o this_o testimony_n which_o all_o aught_o to_o be_v right_o call_v evidence_n in_o this_o matter_n whereby_o all_o will_v discover_v a_o obscure_a testimony_n not_o yet_o prove_v god_n word_n must_v of_o necessity_n be_v extrinsical_a to_o the_o testimony_n itself_o and_o if_o extrinsic_a no_o other_o evidence_n can_v motive_n therefore_o the_o evidence_n of_o its_o credibility_n must_v be_v take_v from_o extrinfick_a motive_n possible_o be_v have_v but_o that_o which_o arise_v from_o the_o know_a motive_n of_o credibility_n for_o by_o these_o the_o church_n be_v prove_v a_o oracle_n no_o less_o
