one_o and_o beside_o we_o see_v that_o learned_a man_n i_o speak_v of_o many_o who_o may_v for_o their_o excellent_a gift_n profit_v many_o and_o do_v the_o church_n much_o good_a be_v hara_o draw_v thereto_o i_o leave_v their_o reason_n to_o themselves_o perhaps_o they_o think_v it_o a_o needless_a work_n to_o set_v forth_o more_o book_n for_o i_o own_o part_n i_o know_v that_o many_o will_v from_o learned_a man_n or_o seek_v glory_n and_o praise_n by_o this_o my_o practice_n when_o to_o speak_v as_o the_o truth_n be_v i_o confess_v free_o that_o attempt_n as_o i_o come_v many_o degree_n behind_o they_o in_o gift_n for_o that_o purpose_n so_o i_o will_v not_o take_v upon_o i_o this_o exercise_n of_o writing_n unless_o i_o be_v lead_v to_o it_o by_o weighty_a reason_n but_o in_o the_o simplicity_n of_o my_o heart_n i_o speak_v it_o that_o i_o set_v myself_o to_o this_o work_n as_o i_o can_v have_v time_n and_o leisure_n from_o my_o public_a employment_n in_o my_o ministry_n and_o other_o private_a duty_n even_o to_o keep_v myself_o from_o danger_n in_o this_o evil_a world_n as_o idleness_n too_o much_o tamper_n in_o the_o world_n and_o such_o like_a needless_a and_o hurtful_a besinesse_n as_o well_o as_o for_o the_o desire_n i_o have_v to_o benefit_v any_o other_o hereby_o and_o beside_o i_o think_v it_o better_a to_o benefit_v the_o church_n while_o we_o live_v be_v but_o a_o short_a time_n other_o may_v rise_v up_o after_o to_o perfect_v such_o beginning_n then_o to_o bury_v our_o gift_n utter_o and_o so_o to_o deprive_v it_o altogether_o of_o the_o same_o by_o death_n also_o i_o see_v that_o every_o age_n of_o man_n have_v sundry_a trouble_n annex_v to_o it_o the_o old_a as_o well_o as_o the_o young_a and_o occasion_n be_v offer_v of_o sin_v and_o offend_v god_n many_o way_n by_o one_o occasion_n or_o other_o which_o be_v not_o think_v of_o before_o they_o come_v in_o so_o much_o as_o when_o the_o danger_n of_o youth_n and_o of_o the_o former_a year_n of_o our_o life_n be_v pass_v with_o inwara_n peace_n and_o without_o any_o gross_a and_o just_a offence_n to_o other_o which_o yet_o to_o do_v be_v few_o man_n case_n and_o rare_o obtain_v and_o not_o without_o much_o strive_n and_o watch_v to_o enter_v in_o at_o the_o straight_a gate_n yet_o the_o devil_n so_o much_o the_o more_o envy_v our_o credit_n in_o the_o church_n and_o the_o comfort_n we_o have_v from_o god_n in_o such_o a_o estate_n especial_o the_o minister_n and_o therefore_o he_o do_v the_o more_o bend_v his_o force_n against_o such_o that_o he_o may_v in_o their_o latter_a end_n disgrace_v they_o by_o wind_v they_o into_o some_o reproachful_a and_o foul_a offence_n that_o so_o he_o may_v as_o much_o as_o in_o he_o lie_v make_v their_o former_a virtue_n and_o to_o prevent_v it_o by_o some_o set_a labour_n and_o study_v and_o so_o to_o hold_v fast_o that_o which_o i_o have_v receive_v of_o the_o lord_n and_o that_o be_v by_o the_o occupy_v and_o use_v the_o gift_n which_o he_o have_v give_v i_o as_o in_o this_o kind_n of_o study_n namely_o of_o writing_n i_o may_v and_o also_o if_o i_o shall_v not_o endeavour_n to_o grow_v forward_o in_o grace_n experience_n 17._o and_o in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n from_o the_o which_o a_o man_n may_v be_v easy_o hinder_v by_o the_o error_n of_o the_o wicked_a rather_o than_o to_o people_n who_o be_v not_o bring_v up_o in_o learning_n who_o may_v see_v that_o their_o whole_a life_n may_v be_v direct_v hereby_o and_o may_v much_o profit_n by_o it_o so_o i_o intend_v also_o in_o it_o to_o benefit_n student_n and_o preacher_n who_o be_v not_o yet_o experience_v nor_o best_o furnish_v with_o matter_n for_o the_o edify_n of_o the_o hearer_n so_o that_o beside_o the_o fruit_n they_o may_v reap_v hereby_o in_o common_a with_o the_o people_n so_o they_o may_v learn_v how_o to_o make_v use_n of_o the_o historical_a part_n of_o the_o bible_n and_o learn_v to_o draw_v doctrine_n and_o instruction_n out_o of_o the_o example_n
first_o fruit_n consecrate_v to_o he_o that_o we_o may_v use_v the_o rest_n with_o thanksgiving_n and_o in_o that_o she_o be_v his_o only_a child_n it_o must_v needs_o increase_v his_o heaviness_n that_o by_o his_o vow_n he_o have_v bring_v upon_o himself_o when_o he_o see_v he_o must_v be_v deprive_v of_o she_o and_o to_o this_o his_o sin_n bring_v he_o in_o his_o rash_a vow_n make_v or_o whatsoever_o other_o sin_n they_o be_v that_o other_o may_v beware_v thereby_o and_o by_o this_o we_o learn_v that_o god_n for_o man_n sin_n will_v not_o spare_v to_o deprive_v they_o of_o that_o which_o be_v most_o dear_a unto_o they_o one_o reason_n hereof_o be_v that_o the_o lord_n mean_v to_o humble_v they_o deep_o and_o to_o cause_v they_o to_o descend_v into_o themselves_o more_o serious_o and_o to_o purge_v out_o the_o sin_n that_o wait_v they_o a_o mischief_n note_n and_o so_o to_o prevent_v it_o and_o therefore_o this_o use_n we_o shall_v make_v of_o it_o that_o whensoever_o the_o lord_n deal_v so_o with_o we_o we_o shall_v know_v it_o be_v for_o the_o hardness_n of_o our_o heart_n which_o otherwise_o and_o without_o such_o break_n of_o they_o will_v not_o be_v soften_v and_o let_v we_o the_o less_o marvel_v at_o it_o when_o we_o find_v it_o to_o be_v so_o for_o though_o he_o have_v often_o go_v about_o it_o by_o gentle_a mean_n yet_o we_o know_v they_o have_v not_o prevail_v so_o that_o we_o have_v drive_v he_o to_o deal_v more_o hardly_o with_o we_o as_o we_o count_v it_o and_o to_o handle_v we_o more_o rough_o as_o to_o wound_v we_o so_o deep_o by_o take_v the_o thing_n from_o we_o which_o be_v most_o dear_a unto_o us._n and_o if_o we_o be_v not_o to_o be_v accuse_v for_o that_o our_o heart_n be_v harden_v by_o the_o deceitfulnes_n of_o sin_n but_o that_o we_o relent_v yet_o let_v we_o know_v that_o god_n have_v sufficient_a cause_n to_o afflict_v we_o as_o to_o exercise_v and_o prepare_v we_o for_o great_a and_o to_o hold_v we_o here_o as_o stranger_n but_o of_o this_o in_o another_o place_n although_o i_o have_v often_o observe_v it_o before_o in_o the_o several_a story_n of_o the_o punishment_n which_o fall_v upon_o the_o idolatrous_a israelite_n by_o this_o verse_n it_o may_v appear_v how_o sore_a iphtahs_n daughter_n meet_v of_o he_o sense_n do_v trouble_v he_o as_o both_o by_o his_o word_n he_o testify_v say_v oh_o thou_o that_o shall_v have_v be_v my_o chief_a earthly_a comfort_n thou_o i_o say_v be_v one_o that_o have_v chief_o cast_v i_o down_o also_o by_o sign_n thereof_o he_o show_v it_o in_o that_o he_o know_v not_o there_o be_v liberty_n give_v by_o the_o lord_n in_o that_o case_n to_o redeem_v that_o which_o a_o man_n have_v vow_v amiss_o this_o verse_n afford_v we_o many_o good_a lesson_n and_o first_o by_o this_o that_o she_o be_v doct._n such_o a_o trouble_n to_o he_o after_o he_o have_v get_v the_o victory_n and_o that_o the_o lord_n pull_v he_o down_o so_o sore_o thereby_o by_o this_o i_o say_v we_o be_v teach_v that_o god_n see_v it_o expedient_a thus_o to_o deal_v with_o his_o servant_n oft_o time_n that_o when_o he_o have_v exalt_v they_o by_o some_o great_a favour_n bestow_v upon_o they_o lest_o they_o shall_v take_v too_o much_o delight_v therein_o and_o so_o become_v surfeit_v therewith_o he_o add_v some_o affliction_n to_o it_o or_o take_v away_o some_o part_n of_o of_o and_o deal_v about_o season_n that_o although_o all_o know_v the_o weather_n alter_v the_o price_n of_o thing_n yet_o we_o will_v sell_v and_o buy_v our_o commodity_n note_n before_o hand_n
