Fill your hands Consecrate your selves to day to the LORD even every man upon his son and upon his brother that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day 30 ¶ And it came to pass on the morrow that Moses said unto the people Ye have sinned a great sin and now I will go up unto the LORD peradventure I shall make an atonement for your sin 31 And Moses returned unto the LORD and said Oh this people have sinned a great sin and have made them gods of gold 32 Yet now if thou wilt forgive their sin and if not blot me I pray thee out of thy book which thou hast written 33 And the LORD said unto Moses Whosoever hath sinned against me him will I blot out of my book 34 Therefore now go lead the people unto the place of which I have spoken unto thee Behold mine Angel shall go before thee Nevertheless in the day when I visit I will visit their sin upon them 35 And the LORD plagued the people because they made the calf which Aaron made CHAP. XXXIII 1 The Lord refuseth to go as he had promised with the people 4 The people mourn thereat 7 The tabernacle is removed out of the camp 9 The Lord talketh familiarly with Moses 12 Moses desireth to see the glory of God ANd the LORD said unto Moses Depart and go up hence thou and the people which thou hast brought up out of the land of Egypt unto the land which I sware unto Abraham to Isaac and to Jacob saying * Gen. 12.7 Unto thy seed will I give it 2 * Deut. 7.22 Josh 24.11 And I will send an Angel before thee and I will drive out the Canaanite the Amorite and the Hittite and the Perizzite the Hivite and the Jebusite 3 Unto a land flowing with milk honey for I will not go up in the midst of thee for thou art a * Chap. 32.9 Deut. 9.13 stiff-necked people lest I consume thee in the way 4 ¶ And when the people heard these evil tidings they mourned and no man did put on him his ornaments 5 For the LORD had said unto Moses Say unto the children of Israel Ye are a stiff-necked people I will come up into the midst of thee in a moment and consume thee therefore now put off thy ornaments from thee that I may know what to do unto thee 6 And the children of Israel stript themselves of their ornaments by the mount Horeb. 7 And Moses took the tabernacle and pitched it without the camp afar off from the camp and called it the tabernacle of the congregation And it came to pass that every one which sought the LORD went out unto the tabernacle of the congregation which was without the camp 8 And it came to pass when Moses went out unto the tabernacle that all the people rose up and stood every man at his tent-door and looked after Moses until he was gone into the tabernacle 9 And it came to pass as Moses entred into the tabernacle the cloudy pillar descended and stood at the door of the tabernacle and the LORD talked with Moses 10 And all the people saw the cloudy pillar stand at the tabernacle-door all the people rose up worshipped every man in his tent-door 11 And the LORD spake unto Moses face to face as a man speaketh unto his friend And he tu●ned again into the camp but his servant Joshua the son of Nun a young man departed not out of the tabernacle 12 ¶ And Moses said unto the LORD See thou sayest unto me Bring up this people and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me Yet thou hast said I know thee by name and thou hast also found grace in my sight 13 Now therefore I pray thee if I have found grace in thy sight shew me now thy way that I may know thee that I may finde grace in thy sight and consider that this nation is thy people 14 And he said My presence shall go with thee I will give thee rest 15 And he said unto him If thy presence go not with me carry us not up hence 16 For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight Is it not in that thou goest with us So shall we be separated I and thy people from all the people that are upon the face of the earth 17 And the LORD said unto Moses I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken for thou hast found grace in my sight I know thee by name 18 And he said I beseech thee shew me thy glory 19 And he said I will make all my goodness pass before thee and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee * Rom. 9.15 and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy 20 And he said Thou canst not see my face
† Heb. ci●led seated and he came with the heads of the people he executed the justice of the LORD and his judgements with Israel 22 ¶ And of Dan he said Dan is a lions whelp he shall leap from Bashan 23 ¶ And of Naphtali he said O Naphtali satisfied with favour full with the blessing of the LORD possess thou the west and the south 24 ¶ And of Asher he said Let Asher be blessed with children let him be acceptable to his brethren and let him dip his foot in oyl 25 ‖ Or under thy shoes shall be iron Thy shoes shall be iron and brass and as thy days so shall thy strength be 26 ¶ There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun who rideth upon the heaven in thy help and in his excellency on the skie 27 The eternal God is thy refuge and underneath are the everlasting arms and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee and shall say Destroy them 28 * Jer. 23.6 Israel then shall dwell in safety alone the fountain of Jacob shall be upon a land of corn and wine also his heaven shall drop down dew 29 Happy art thou O Israel who is like unto thee O people saved by the LORD the shield of thy help and who is the sword of thy excellency and thine enemies ‖ Or shall be subdued shall be found liars unto thee and thou shalt tread upon their high places CHAP. called Josias Josiah his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XXII 1 Josiah his good reign 3 He taketh care for the repair of the temple 8 Hilkiab having found a book of the law Josiah sendeth to Husdah to enquire of the Lord. 15 Huldah prophesi●th the destruction of Jerusalem but respite thereof in Josiahs time JOsiah * 2 Chr. 34.1 was eight years old when he began to reign and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD and walked in all the way of David his father and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left 3 ¶ And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah that the king sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah the son of Meshullam the scribe to the house of the LORD saying 4 Go up to Hilkiah the high priest that he may sum the silver which is brought into the house of the LORD which the keepers of the † Heb. threshold door have gathered of the people 5 And let them deliver it into the hand of the doers of the work that have the oversight of the house of the LORD and let them give it to the doers of the work which is in the house of the LORD to repair the breaches of the house 6 Unto carpenters and builders and masons and to buy timber and hewn stone to repair the house 7 Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand because they dealt faithfully 8 ¶ And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD and Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan and he read it 9 And Shaphan the scribe came to the king and brought the king word again and said Thy servants have † Heb. ●●●ted gathered the money that was found in the house and have delivered it into the hand of them that do the work that have the oversight of the house of the LORD 10 And Shaphan the scribe shewed the king saying Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book and Shaphan read it before the king 11 And it came to pass when the king had heard the words of the book of the law that he rent his clothes 12 And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest and Ahikam the son of Shaphan and Achbor the son of Michaiah and Shaphan the scribe and Asahiah a servant of the kings saying 13 Go ye enquire of the LORD for me and for the people and for all Judah concerning the words of this book that is found for great is the wrath of the LORD that is kindled against us because our fathers have not hearkned unto the words of this book to do according unto all that which is written concerning us 14 So Hilkiah the priest and Ahikam and Achbor and Shaphan and Asahiah went unto Huldah the prophetess the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah the son of Harhas keeper of the † Heb. ●a●ments wardrobe now she dwelt in Jerusalem ‖ Or in the second put in the colledge and they communed with her 15 ¶ And she said unto them Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Tell the man that sent you to me 16 Thus saith the LORD Behold I will bring evil upon this place and upon the inhabitants thereof even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read 17 Because they have forsaken me and have burnt incense unto other gods that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place and shall not be quenched 18 But to the king of Judah which sent you to enquire of the LORD thus shall ye say to him Thus saith the LORD God of Israel As touching the words which thou hast heard 19 Because thine heart was tender and thou hast humbled thy self before the LORD when thou heardest what I spake against this place and against the inhabitants thereof that they should become a desolation and a curse and hast rent thy clothes and wept before me I also have heard thee saith the LORD 20 Behold therefore I will gather thee unto thy fathers and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place And they brought the king word again CHAP. XXIII 1 Josiah causeth the book to be read in a solemn assembly 3 He reneweth the covenant of the Lord. 4 He destroyeth idolatry 15 He burneth dead mens bones upon the altar of Beth-el as was fore-prophesied 21 He keepeth a most solemn pass-over 24 He putteth away witches and all abomination 26 Gods final wrath against Judah 29 Josiah provoking Pharaoh-nechoh is slain at Megiddo 31 Jehoahaz succeeding him is imprisoned by Pharaoh-nechoh who made Jehoiakim king 36 Jehoiakim his wicked reign ANd * 2 Chron. 34.30 the king sent and they gathered unto him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem 2 And the king went up into the house of the LORD and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him and the priests and the prophets and all the people † Heb. from small 〈◊〉 unto great both small and great and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD 3 ¶ And the king stood by a pillar and made a covenant before the LORD to walk after the LORD and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book and all the people stood to the covenant 4 And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest and the priests of the second order and the keepers of the door to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal and for the grove and for all the host of heaven and he burnt them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron and carried the ashes of them unto Beth-el 5 And he † Heb. ●●●sed to ●●ase put down the † Heb. ●●●mar●m idolatrous priests whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah and in the places round about Jerusalem them also that burnt incense unto Baal to the sun and to the moon and to the ‖ Or twelve sign● or constellations planets and to all the host of heaven 6 And he brought out the * Chap. 21. ● grove from the house of the LORD without Jerusalem unto the brook Kidron and burnt it at the brook Kidron and stampt it small to powder and cast the powder thereof upon the graves of the children of the people 7
herds in abundance for God had given him substance very much 30 This same Hezekiah also stopped the upper water-course of Gihon and brought it straight down to the west-side of the city of David And Hezekiah prospered in all his works 31 ¶ Howbeit in the business of the † Heb. interpreters embassadours of the princes of Babylon who * 2 Kin. 20.12 Isa 39.1 sent unto him to enquire of the wonder that was done in the land God left him to try him that he might know all that was in his heart 32 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah and his † Heb. kindnesses goodness behold they are written in the vision of Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz and in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel 33 And Hezekiah slept with his fathers and they buried him in the ‖ Or. highest chiefest of the sepulchres of the sons of David and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem did him honour at his death and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XXXIII 1 Manasseh his wicked reign 3 He setteth up idolatry and w●ul● not be admonished 11 He is carried into Babylon 12Vpon his prayer to God he is released and putteth down idolatry 18 His acts 20 He dying Amon succeedeth him 21 Amon reigning wick●●ly is slain by his servants 25 The murderers being slain Josiah succeedeth him MAnasseh * 2 Kin. 21.1 c. was twelve years old when he began to reign and he reigned fifty and five years in Jerusalem 2 But did that which was evil in the ●i●●t of the LORD like unto the * Deut. 23.9 abominations of the heathen whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel 3 ¶ For † Heb. he returned and built ●e built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had * 2 Kin. 18.4 broken down and he reared up altars for Baalim and made groves and worshipped all the host of heaven and served them 4 Also he built altars in the house of the LORD whereof the LORD had said * Deut. 12.11 1 Kin. 8.29 9.3 Chap. 6.6 and 7.16 In Jerusalem shall my name be for ever 5 And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD 6 And he caused his children to pass through the fire in the valley of the son of Hinnom also he observed times and used enchantments and used witchcraft and dealt with a familiar spirit and with wizards he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD to provoke him to anger 7 And he set a carved image the idol which he had made in the house of God of which God had said to David and to Solomon his son In * Psal 132.14 this house and in Jerusalem which I have chosen before all the tribes of Israel will I put my name for ever 8 * 2 Sam. 7.10 Neither will I any more remove the foot of Israel from out of the land which I have appointed for your fathers so that they will take heed to do all that I have commanded them according to the whole law and the statutes and the ordinances by the hand of Moses 9 So Manasseh made Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to err and to do worse then the heathen whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel 10 And the LORD spake to Manasseh and to his people but they would not hearken 11 ¶ Wherefore the LORD brought upon them the captains of the host † Heb. which were the kings of the king of Assyria which took Manasseh among the thorns and bound him with ‖ Or chains fetters and carried him to Babylon 12 And when he was in affliction he besought the LORD his God and humbled himself greatly before the God of his fathers 13 And prayed unto him and he was entreated of him and heard his supplication and brought him again to Jerusalem into his kingdom Then Manasseh knew that the LORD he was God 14 Now after this he built a wall without the city of David on the west-side of Gihon in the valley even to the entring in at the fish-gate and compassed about ‖ Or the tower Ophel and raised it up a very great height and put captains of war in all the fenced cities of Judah 15 And he took away the strange gods and the idol out of the house of the LORD and all the altars that he had built in the mount of the house of the LORD and in Jerusalem and cast them out of the city 16 And he repaired the altar of the LORD and sacrificed thereon peace-offerings and thank-offerings and commanded Judah to serve the LORD God of Israel 17 Nevertheless the people did sacrifice still in the high-places yet unto the LORD their God onely 18 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh his prayer unto his God and the words of the seers that spake to him in the name of the LORD God of Israel behold th●y are written in the book of the kings of Israel 19 His prayer also and how God was entreated of him and all his sin and his trespass and the places wherein he built high places and set up groves and graven images before he was humbled behold they are written among the sayings of ‖ Or Hosai the seers 20 ¶ So Manasseh slept with his fathers and they buried him in his own house and Amon his son reigned in his stead 21 ¶ * 2 Kin. 21.19 c Amon was two and twenty years old when he began to reign and reigned two years in Jerusalem 22 But he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD as did Manasseh his father for Amon sacrificed unto all the carved images which Manasseh his father had made and served them 23 And humbled not himself before the LORD as Manasseh his father had humbled himself but Amon † Heb. multiplied trespass trespassed more and more 24 And his servants conspired against him and slew him in his own house 25 ¶ Bu● the people of the land slew all them that had conspired against king Amon and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his stead CHAP. ¶ For in the eighth year of his reign while he was yet young he began to seek after the God of David his father and in the twelfth year he began * 1 Kin. 13.2 to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places and the groves and the carved images and the molten images 4 * Levit. 26.30 And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence and the ‖ Or su●-images images that were on high above them he cut down and the groves and the carved images and the molten images he brake in pieces and made dust of them and strowed it upon the † Heb. face of the graves graves of them that had sacrificed unto them 5 And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem 6 And so did he in the cities of Manasseh and Ephraim and Simeon even unto Naphtali with their ‖ Or mauls mattocks round about 7 And when he had broken down the altars and the groves and had beaten the graven images † Heb. to make powder into powder and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel he returned to Jerusalem 8 ¶ Now in the eighteenth year of his reign when he had purged the land and the house he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah and Maaseiah the governour of the city and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder to repair the house of the LORD his God 9 And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim and of all the remnant of Israel and of all Judah and Benjamin and they returned to Jerusalem 10 And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of the LORD and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the LORD to repair and mend the house 11 Even to the artificers and builders gave they it to buy hewn ston● and timber for couplings and ‖ Or to rafter to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed 12 And the men did the work faithfully and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah the Levites of the sons of Merari and Zechariah and Meshullam of the sons of the Kohathites to set it forward and other of the Levites all that could skill of instruments of mu●ick 13 Also they were over the bearers of burdens and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service and of the Levites there were scribes and officers and porters 14 ¶ And when they ●rought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD Hilkiah the priest * 2 Kin. 22.8 c. found a book of the law of the LORD given † Heb. by the hand of by Moses 15 And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan 15 And Shaphan carried the book to the king and brought the king word back again saying All that was committed † Heb. to the hand of to thy servants they do it 17 And they have † Heb. poured out or melted gathered together the money that was found in the house of the LORD and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers and to the hand of the workmen 18 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king saying Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book And Shaphan read † Heb. ●●it it before the king 19 And it came to pass when the king had heard the words of the law that he rent his clothes 20 And the king commanded Hilkiah and Ahikam the son in Judah concerning the words of the book that is found for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD to do after all that is written in this book 22 And Hilkiah and they that the king had appointed went to Huldah the prophetess the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath the son of ‖ Or H●rba● 2 King 22.14 Hasrah keeper of the † stood in his place and made a covenant before the LORD to walk after the LORD and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all his heart and with all his soul to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book 32 And he caused all that were † Heb. ●●und present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God
but I have not been called to come in unth● king these thirty days 12 And they told to Mordecai Esthers words 13 Then Mordecai commanded to answer Esther Think not with thy self that thou shalt escape in the kings house more then all the Jews 14 For if thou altogether holdest thy peace at this time then shall there † Heb. respiration enlargement and deliverance arise to the Jews from another place but thou and thy fathers house shall be destroyed and who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this 15 ¶ Then Esther bade them return Mordecai this answer 16 Go gather together all the Jews that are † Heb. found present in Shushan and fast ye for me and neither eat nor drink three days night or day I also and my maidens will fa●t likewise and so will I go in unto the king which is not according to the law and if I perish I perish 17 So Mordecai † Heb. ●●ssed went his way and did according to all that Esther had commanded him CHAP. V. 1 Esther adventuring on the kings favour obtaineth the grace of the golden scept●● and inviteth the king and Haman to a banquet 6 She being encouraged by the king in her suit inviteth them to another banquet the next day 9 Haman proud of his advancement repineth at the contempt of Mordecai 14 By the counsel of Zeresh he buildeth for him 〈◊〉 pair of gallows NOw it came to pass on the third day that Esther put on her royal apparel and stood in the inner court of the kings house over against the kings house and the king sat upon his royal throne in the royal house over against the gate of the house 2 And it was so when the king saw Esther the queen standing in the court that she obtained favour in his light and the king held out to Esther the golden sceptre that was in his hand so Esther drew near and touched the top of the sceptre 3 Then said the king unto her What wilt thou queen Esther and with is thy request it shall be even given thee to the half of the kingdom 4 And Esther answered If it seem good unto the king let the king and Haman come this day unto the banquet that I have prepared for him 5 Then the king said Cause Haman to make haste that he may do as Esther hath said So the king and Haman came to the banquet that Esther had prepared 6 ¶ And the king said unto Esther at the banquet of wine What is thy petition and it shall be granted thee and what is thy request even to the half of the kingdom it shall be performed 7 Then answered Esther and said My petition and my request is 8 If I have found favour in the sight of the king and if it please the king to grant my petition and † Heb. to do to perform my request let the king and Haman come to the banquet that I shall prepare for them and I will do to morrow as the king hath said 9 ¶ Then went Haman forth that day joyful and with a glad heart but when Haman saw Mordecai in the kings gate that he stood not up nor moved for him he was full of indignation against Mordecai 10 Nevertheless Haman refrained himself and when he came home he sent and † Heb. caused to come called for his friends and Zeresh his wife 11 And Haman told them of the glory of his riches and the multitude of his children and all the things wherein the king had promoted him and how he had advanced him above the princes and servants of the king 12 Haman said moreover Yea Esther the queen did let no man come in with the king unto the banquet that she had prepared but my self and to morrow am I invited unto her also with the king 13 Yet all this availeth me nothing so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the kings gate 14 ¶ Then said Zeresh his wife and all his friends unto him Let a † Heb. tree gallows be made of fifty cubits high and to morrow speak thou unto the king that Mordecai may be hanged thereon then go thou in merrily with the king unto the banquet And the thing pleased Haman and he caused the gallows to be made CHAP. XXXII 1 Jeremiah being imprisoned by Zedekiah for his prophesie 6 buyeth Hanameels field 13 Baruch must preserve the evidences as tokens of the peoples return 16 Jeremiah in his prayer complaineth to God 26 God confirmeth the captivity for their sins 36 and promiseth a gracious return THe word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar 2 For then the king of Babylons army besieged Jerusalem and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison which was in the king of Judahs house 3 For Zedekiah king is in the countrey of Benjamin for the right of inheritance is thine and the redemption is thine buy it for thy self then I knew that this was the word of the LORD 9 And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncles son that was in Anathoth and weighed him the money even ‖ Or seven shekels and ten pieces of silver seventeen shekels of silver 10 And I † Heb. wrote in the book subscribed the evidence and sealed it and took witnesses and weighed him the money in the balances 11 So I took the evidence of the purchase both that which was sealed according to the law and custom and that which was open 12 And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah the son of Maaseiah in the sight of Hanameel mine uncles son and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison 13 ¶ And I charged Baruch before them saying 14 Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Take these evidences this evidence of the purchase both which is sealed and this evidence which is open and put them in an earthen vessel that they may continue many days 15 For thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land 16 ¶ Now when I had delivered the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah I prayed unto the LORD saying 17 Ah Lord GOD behold There shall not a man be cut off from Jonedab the son of Rechab to stand c. Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever CHAP. XXXVI 1 Jeremiah causeth Barueh to write his prophesie 5 and publickly to read it 11 The princes having intelligence thereof by Michalab send Jedudi to fetch the roll and read it 19 They will Baruch to hide himself and Jeremiah 20 The king Jehoiakim being certified thereof heareth part of it and burneth the roll 27 Jeremiah denouneeth his judgement 32 Baruch writeth a new copy ANd it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah that this word came unto Jeremiah from the LORD saying 2 Take thee a roll of a book and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel and against Judah and against all the nations from the day I spake unto thee from the days of * Ch. 25.3 Josiah even unto this day 3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them that they may return every man from his evil way that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin 4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD which he had spoken unto him upon a roll of a book 5 And Jeremiah commanded Baruch saying I am shut up I cannot go into the house of the LORD 6 Therefore go thou and read in the roll which thou hast written from my mouth the words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORDS house upon the fasting-day and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities 7 It may be † Heb. their supplication shall sall they will present their supplication before the LORD and will return every one from his evil way for great is the anger and the fury that the LORD hath pronounced against this people 8 And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet cummanded him reading in the book the words of the LORD in the LORDs house 9 And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah in the ninth moneth that they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem 10 Then read Baruch in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe in the higher court at the ‖ Or door * Chap. 26.10 entry of the new gate of the LORDs house in the ears of all the people 11 ¶ When Michaiah the son of Gemariah the son Shaphan had heard out of the book all the words of the LORD 12 Then he went down into the kings house into the scribes chamber and lo all the princes sat there even Elishama the scribe and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah and Elnathan the son of Achbor and Gemariah the son of Shaphan and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah and all the princes 13 Then Michaiah declared unto them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read the book in
her saith the LORD 54 A found of a cry cometh from Babylon and great destruction from the land of the Caldeans 55 Because the LORD hath spoiled Babylon and destroyed out of her the great voice when her waves do roar like great waters a noise of their voice is uttered 56 Because the spoiler is come upon her even upon Babylon and her mighty men are taken every one of their bows is broken for the LORD God of recompences shall surely requite 57 And I will make drunk her princes and her wise men her captains and her rulers and her mighty men and they shall sleep a perpetual sleep and not wake saith the King whose name is the LORD of hosts 58 Thus saith the LORD of hosts ‖ Or The walls of broad Babylon The broad walls of Babylon shall be utterly ‖ Or made naked broken and her high gates shall be burnt with fire and the people shall labour in vain and the folk in the fire and they shall be weary 59 ¶ The word which Jeremiah the prophet commanded Seraiah the son of Neriah the son of Maaseiah when he went ‖ Or on the behalf of with Zedekiah the king of Judah into Babylon in the fourth year of his reign and this Seraiah was a ‖ Or prince of Menucha or chief chamberlain quiet prince 60 So Jeremiah wrote in a book all the evil that should come upon Babylon even all these words that are written against Babylon 61 And Jeremiah said to Seraiah When thou comest to Babylon and shalt see and shalt read all these words 62 Then shalt thou say O LORD thou hast spoken against this place to cut it off that none shall remain in it neither man nor beast but that it shall be † Heb. desolations desolate for ever 63 And it shall be when thou hast made an end of reading this book that thou shalt binde a stone to it cast it into the midst of Euphrates 64 And thou shalt say Thus shall Babylon sink and shall not rise from the evil that I will bring upon her and they shall be weary Thus far are the words of Jeremiah CHAP. LII 1 Zedekiah rebelleth 4 Jerusalem is besieged and taken 8 Zedekiahs sons killed and his own eyes put out 12 Nebuzar-adan burneth and spoileth the city 24 He carrieth away the captives 31 Evil-merodach advanceth Jehoiachin ZEdekiah was * 2 Kin. 24.18 one and twenty year old when he † Heb. reigned began to reign and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah 2 And he did that which was evil in the eyes of the LORD according to all that Jehoiakim had done 3 For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah till he had cast them out from his presence that Zedekiah revelled against the king of Babylon 4 ¶ And it came to pass in the * 2 Kin. 25.1 Ch. 39.1 ninth year of his reign in the the moneth in the tenth day of the moneth that Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came he and all his army against Jerusalem and pitched against it and built forts against it round about 5 So the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah 6 And in the fourth moneth in the ninth day of the moneth the famine was fore in the city so that there was no bread for the people of the land 7 Then the city was broken up and all the men of war fled and went forth out of the city by night by the way of the gate between the two walls which was by the kings garden now the Caldeans were by the city round about and they went by the way of the plain 8 ¶ But the army of the Caldeans pursued after the king and overtook 9 Then they took the king and carried him up unto the king of Babylon to Riblah in the land of Hamath where he gave judgement upon him 10 And the king of Babylon slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes he slew also all the princes of Judah in Riblah 11 Then he † Heb. blinded put out the eyes of Zedekiah and the king of Babylon bound him in ‖ Or fetters chains and carried him to Babylon and put him in † Heb. house of the wards prison till the day of his death 12 ¶ Now in the fifth moneth in the tenth day of the moneth which was the nineteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came Nebuzar-adam ‖ Or chief marshal † Heb. chief of the executioners or slaughter-men And so v. ● 14. c. captain of the guard which † Heb. stood before served the king of Babylon into Jerusalem 13 And burnt the house of the LORD and the kings house and all the houses of Jerusalem and all the houses of the great men burnt he with fire 14 And all the army of the Caldeans that were with the captain of the guard brake down all the walls of Jerusalem round about 15 Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away captive certain of the poor of the people and the residue of the people that remained in the city and those that fell away that fell to the king of Babylon and the rest of the multitude 16 But Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard left certain of the poor of the land for vine-dressers and for husbandmen 17 Also the * Ch. 27.19 pillars of brass that were in the house of the LORD and the bases and the brasen sea that was in the house of the LORD the Caldeans brake and carried all the brass of them to Babylon 18 The caldrons also and the ‖ Or instruments to remove the ashes shovels and the snuffers and the ‖ Or basons bowls and the spoons and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministred took they away 19 And the basons and the ‖ Or censers fire-pans and the bowls and the caldrons and the candlesticks and the spoons and the cups that which was of gold in gold and that which was of silver in silver took the captain of the guard away 20 The two pillars one sea and twelve brasen bulls that were under the bases which king Solomon had made in the house of the LORD † Heb. their brass the brass of all these vessels was without weight 21 And concerning the * 1 Kin. 7.15 2 Kin. 25.17 2 Chr. 3.15 pillars the height of one pillar was eighteen cubits and a † Heb. threed fillet of twelve cubits did compass it and the thickness thereof was four singers it was hollow 22 And a chapiter of brass was upon it and the height of one chapiter was five cubits with net-work and pomegranates upon the chapiters round about all of brass the second pillar also and the pomegranates were like unto these 23 And there were ninety and six pomegranates on a side and all the
likeness and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel 17 When they went they went upon their four sides and they returned not when they went 18 As for their rings they were so high that they were dreadful and their ‖ Or strakes rings were full of eyes round about them four 19 And when the living creatures went the wheels went by them and when the living creatures were lift up from the earth the wheels were lift up 20 Whithersoever the spirit was to go they went thither was their spirit to go and the wheels were lifted up over against them for the spirit ‖ Or of life of the living creature was in the wheels 21 When those went these went and when those stood these stood and when those were lifted up from the earth the wheels were lifted up over against them for the spirit ‖ Or of ●if● of the living creature was in the wheels 22 And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal stretched forth over their heads above 23 And under the firmament were their wings strait the one toward the other every one had two which covered on this side and every one had two which covered on that side their bodies 24 And when they went I heard the noise of their wings like the noise of great waters as the voice of the Almighty the voice of speech as the noise of an host when they stood they let down their wings 25 And there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads when they stood and had let down their wings 26 ¶ And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne as the appearance of a sapphire-stone and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it 27 And I saw as the colour of amber as the appearance of fire round about within it from the appearance of his loyns even upward and from the appearance of his loyns even downward I saw as it were the appearance of fire and it had brightness round about 28 As the appearance of the bowe that is in the cloud in the day of rain so was the appearance of the brightness round about This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD and when I saw it I fell upon my face and I heard a voice of one that spake CHAP. II. 1 Ezekiels commission 6 His instruction 9 The roll of his heavy prophesie ANd he said unto me Son of man stand upon thy feet and I will speak unto thee 2 And the spirit entred into me when he spake unto me and set me upon my feet that I heard him that spake unto me 3 And he said unto me Son of man I send thee to the children of Israel to a rebellious † Heb. nations nation that hath rebelled against me they and their fathers have transgressed against me even unto this very day 4 For they are † Heb. hard of fa●e impudent children and stiff-hearted I do send thee unto them and thou shalt say unto them Thus saith the Lord GOD. 5 And they whether they will hear or whether they will forbear for they are a rebellious house yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them 6 ¶ And thou son of man be not afraid of them neither be afraid of their words though ‖ Or rebels briers and thorns be with thee and thou dost dwell among scorpions be not afraid of their words not be dismayed at their looks though they be a rebellious house 7 And thou shalt speak my words unto them whether they will hear or whether they will forbear for they are † Heb. rebellion most rebellious 8 But thou son of man hear what I say unto thee Be not thou rebellions like that rebellious house open thy mouth and * Rev. 10.9 eat that I give thee 9 ¶ And when I looked behold an hand was sent unto me and lo a roll of a book was therein 10 And he spread it before me and it was written within and without and there was written therein lamentations and mourning and wo. CHAP. III. 1 Ezekiel eateth the roll 4 God encourageth him 15 God sheweth him the rule of prophesie 22 God shutteth and openeth the prophets month MOreover he said unto me Son of man eat that thou findest eat this roll and go speak unto the house of Israel 2 So I opened my mouth and he caused me to eat that roll 3 And he said unto me Son of man cause thy belly to eat and fill thy bowels with this roll that I give thee Then did I * Rev. 10.9 eat it and it was in my mouth as honey for sweetness 4 ¶ And he said unto me Son of man go get thee unto the house of Israel and speak with my words unto them 5 For thou art not sent to a people † Heb. deep of lip and heavy of tongue and so v. 6. of a strange speech and of an hard language but to the house of Israel 6 Not to many people † Heb. deep of lip and heavy of language of a strange speech and of an hard language whose words thou canst not understand ‖ Or if I had sent thee c. would they not have hearkned unto thee surely had I sent thee to them they would have hearkned unto thee 7 But the house of Israel will not hearken unto thee for they will not hearken unto me for all the house of Israel are † Heb. stiff of forehead and hard of bea rt impudent and hard-hearted 8 Behold I have made thy face strong against their faces and thy forehead strong against their foreheads 9 As an adamant harder then flint have I made thy forehead * Jer. 1.8 fear them not neither be dismayed at their looks though they be a rebellious house 10 Moreover he said unto me Son of man all my words that I shall speak unto thee receive in thine heart and hear with thine ears 11 And go get thee to them of the captivity unto the children of thy people and speak unto them and tell them Thus saith the Lord GOD whether they will hear or whether they will forbear 12 Then the spirit took me up and I heard behinde me a voice of a great rushing saying Blessed be the glory of the LORD from his place 13 I heard also the noise of the wings of the living creatures that † Heb. kissed touched one another and the noise of the wheels over against them and a noise of a great rushing 14 So the spirit listed me up and took me away and I went † Heb. bitter in bitterness in the † Heb. bot anger heat of my spirit but the hand of the LORD was strong upon me 15 ¶ Then I came
of your ground neither shall your vine cast her fruit before the time in the field saith the LORD of hosts 12 And all nations shall call you blessed for ye shall be a delightsom land saith the LORD of hosts 13 ¶ Your words have been * Job 21.14 stout against me saith the LORD yet ye say What have we spoken so much against thee 14 Ye have said It is vain to serve God and what profit is it that we have kept † Heb. his observation his ordinance and that we have walked † Heb. in black mournfully before the LORD of hosts 15 And now we call the proud happy yea they that work wickedness † Heb. are built are set up yea they that * Ps 95.9 tempt God are even delivered 16 ¶ Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another and the LORD hearkned and heard it and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD and that thought upon his name 17 And they shall be mine saith the LORD of hosts in that day when I make up my ‖ Or special treasure jewels and I will spare them as a man spareth his own son that serveth him 18 Then shall ye return and discern between the righteous and the wicked between him that serveth God and him that serveth him not CHAP. IV. 1 Gods judgement on the wicked 2 and his blessing on the good 4 He exhorteth to the study of the law 5 and telleth of Elijahs coming and office FOr behold the day cometh that shall burn as an oven and all the proud yea and all that do wickedly shall be stubble and the day that cometh shall burn them up saith the LORD of hosts that it shall leave them neither root nor branch 2 ¶ But unto you that fear my name shall the * Luk. 1.78 sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings and ye shall go forth and grow up as calves of the stall 3 And ye shall tread down the wicked for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this saith the LORD of hosts 4 ¶ Remember ye the * Exod. 20.3 law of Moses my servant which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel with the statutes and judgements 5 ¶ Behold I will send you * Mat. 11.14 Mar. 9.11 Luk. 1.17 Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD 6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children and the heart of the children to their fathers lest I come and smite the earth with a curse The end of the Prophets APOCRYPHA I. ESDRAS CHAP. I. 1 Josias his charge to the priests and Levites 7 A great pass-over is kept 32 His death is much lamented 34 His successours 53 The temple eity and people are destroyed 56 Therest are carried unto Babylon ANd Josias held the * 2 Kings 23.21 2 Chr. 35.1 feast of the pass-over in Jerusalem unto his Lord and offered the pass-over the fourteenth day of the first moneth 2 Having set the priests according to their daily courses being arayed in long garments in the temple of the Lord. 3 And he spake unto the Levites the holy ministers of Israel that they should hallow themselves unto the Lord to set the holy ark of the Lord in the house that king Solomon the son of David had built 4 And said Ye shall no more bear the ark upon your shoulders now therefore serve the Lord your God and minister unto his people Israel and prepare you after your families and kindreds 5 According as David the king of Israel prescribed and according to the magnificence of Solomon his son and standing in the temple according to the several dignity of the families of you the Levites who minister in the presence of your brethren the children of Israel 6 Offer the pass-over in order and make ready the sacrifices for your brethren and keep the pass-over according to the commandment of the Lord which was given unto Moses 7 And unto the people that was found there Josias gave thirty thousand lambs and kids and three thousand calves these things were given of the kings allowance according as he promised to the people to the priests and to the Levites 8 And Helkias Zacharias and ‖ Or J●●i●l Syelus the governours of the temple gave to the priests for the pass-over two thousand and six hundred sheep and three hundred calves 9 And Jeconias and Samaias and Nathanael his brother and Assabias and Ochiel and Joram captains over thousands gave to the Levites for the pass-over five thousand sheep and ‖ Or f●●e hundred calves 2 Chr. 35.9 seven hundred calves 10 And when these things were done the priests and Levites having the unleavened bread stood in very comely order according to the kindreds 11 And according to the several dignities of the fathers before the people to offer to the Lord as it is written in the book of Moses * 2 Chr. 35.13 and so of the ●●●locks and thus did they in the morning 12 And they rosted the pass-over with fire as appertaineth as for the sacrifices they sod them in brass pots and pans ‖ Or with good s●●d or willingly 2 Chr. 35.13 with a good savour 13 And set them before all the people and afterward they prepared for themselves and for the priests their brethren the sons of Aaron 14 For the priests offered the fat until night and the Levites prepared for themselves and the priests their brethren the sons of Aaron 15 The holy singers also the sons of Asaph were in their order according to the appointment * 2. Chr. 35.15 of David and Asaph of David to wit Asaph Zacharias and Jeduthun who was * 2 Chr. 35.15 the kings st●● of the kings retinue 16 Moreover the porters were at every gate it was not lawful for any to go from his ordinary service for their brethren the Levites prepared for them 17 Thus were the things that belonged to the sacrifices of the Lord accomplished in that day that they might hold the pass-over 18 And offer sacrifices upon the altar of the LORD according to the commandment of king Josias 19 So the children of Israel which were present held the pass-over at that time and the feast of sweet bread seven days 20 And such a pass-over was not kept in Israel since the time of the prophet Samuel 21 Yea all the kings of Israel held not such a pass-over as Josias and the priests and the Levites and the Jews held with all Israel that were found dwelling at Jerusalem 22 In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josias was this pass-over kept 23 And the works of Josias were upright before his Lord with an heart full of godliness 24 As for the things that came to pass in his time they were written in former times concerning those
things which have been set forth by vow for the temple of the Lord at Jerusalem 8 ¶ Then the chief of the families of Judea and of the tribes of Benjamin stood up the priests also and the Levites and all they whose minde the Lord had moved to go up and to build an house for the Lord at Jerusalem 9 And they that dwelt round about them and helped them in all things with silver and gold with † Heb. substance Ezra 1.6 horses and cattel and with very many free gifts of a great number whose minds were stirred up thereto 10 King Cyrus also brought forth the holy vessels which Nebuchodonosor had carried away from Jerusalem and had set up in his temple of idols 11 Now when Cyrus k●ng of the Persians had brought them forth he delivered them to Mithridates his treasurer 12 And by him they were delivered to † Gr. Shashbazar the first part of the word is acrruptly joynes to the word going before Ezra 1.8 Sanabassar the governour of Judea 13 And this was the number of them A thousand golden cups and a thousand of silver † Heb. knio●● Ezra 1.9 censers of silver twenty nine vials of gold thirty and of silver * Ezr. 1.10 but four hundred and ten two thousand four hundred and ten and a thousand other vessels 14 So all the vessels of gold and of silver which were carried away were * Ezr. 1.11 but five thousand four hundred five thousand four hundred threescore and nine 15 These were brought back by Sanabassar together with them of the captivity from Babylon to Jerusalem 16 * Ezra 4.7 But in the time of Artaxerxes king of the Persians Belemus and Mithridates and Tabellius and † Babumus and the name which followeth is but an epithete to the former Ezra 4.9 Rathumus Beeltethmus and † Shimshai Ezra 4.8 Semellius the secretary with others that were in commission with them dwelling in Samaria and other places wrote unto him against them that dwelt in Judea and Jerusalem these letters following 17 To king Artaxerxes our lord thy servants Rathumus the story-writer and Semellius the scribe and the rest of their counsel and the judges that are in Celosyria and Phenice 18 Be it now known to the lord the king that the Jews that are come up from you to us being come into Jerusalem that rebellious and wicked city do build the market-places and repair the walls of it and do lay the foundation of the temple 19 Now if this city and the walls thereof be made up again they will not onely refuse to give tribute but also rebel against kings 20 And forasmuch as the things pertaining to the temple are now in hand we think it meet not to neglect such a matter 21 But to speak unto our lord the king to the intent that if it be thy pleasure it may be sought out in the books of thy fathers 22 And thou shalt finde in the chronicles what is written concerning these things and shalt understand that that city was rebellious troubling both kings and cities 23 And that the Jews were rebellious and raised always wars therein for the which cause even this city was made desolate 24 Wherefore now we do declare unto thee O lord the king that if this city be built again and the walls thereof set up anew thou shalt from henceforth have no passage into Celosyria and Phenice 25 Then the king wrote back again to Rathumus the story-writer to Beeltethmus to Semellius the scribe and to the rest that were in commission and dwellers in Samaria and Syria and Phenice after this manner 26 I have read the epistle which ye have sent unto me therefore I commanded to make diligent search and it hath been found that that city was from the beginning practising against kings 27 And the men therein were given to rebellion and war and that mighty kings and fierce were in Jerusalem who reigned and exacted tributes in Celosyria and Phenice 28 Now therefore I have commanded to hinder those men from building the city and heed to be taken that there be no more done in it 29 And that those wicked workers proceed no further to the annoyance of kings 30 Then king Artaxerxes his letters being read Rathumus and Semellius the scribe and the rest that were in commission with them removing in haste towards Jerusalem with a troup of hors-men and ‖ Or a great number of souldiers a multitude of people in battel aray began to hinder the builders and the building of the temple in Jerusalem ceased until the second year of the reign of Darius king of the Persians CHAP. III. 4. Three strive to excel each other in wise speeches 9 They refer themselves to the judgement of the king 18 The first declareth the strength of wine NOw when Darius reigned he made a great feast unto all his subjects and unto all his houshold and unto all the princes of Media and Persia 2 And to all the governours and captains and lieutenants that were under him from India unto Ethiopia of an hundred twenty and seven provinces 3 And when they had eaten and drunken and being satisfied were gone home then Darius the king went into his bed-chamber and stept and soon after awaked 4 Then three young men that were of the guard that kept the kings body spake one to another 5 Let every one of us speak a sentence he that shall overcome and whole sentence shall seem wiser then the others unto him shall the king Darius give great gifts and great things in token of victory 6 As to be clothed in purple to drink in gold and to sleep upon gold and a chariot with bridles of gold and an head-tire of fine linen and a chain about his neck 7 And he shall sit next to Darius because of his wisdom and shall be called Darius his cousin 8 And then every one wrote his sentence sealed it and laid it under king Darius his pillow 9 And said that when the king is risen some will give him the writings and of whose side the king and the three princes of Persia shall judge that his sentence is the wisest to him shall the victory be given as was appointed 10 The first wrote Wine is the strongest 11 The second wrote The king is the strongest 12 The third wrote Women are strongest but above all things truth beareth away the victory 13 ¶ Now when the king was risen up they took their writings and delivered them unto him and so he read them 14 And sending forth he called all the princes of Persia and Media and the governours and the captains and the lieutenants and the chief officers 15 And sat him down in the ‖ Or counsel royal seat of judgement and the writings were read before them 16 And he said Call the young men and they shall declare their own sentences So they were called and came in 17 And he said unto them Declare
of Israel which is in heaven he gave them over into the power of Nebuchodonosor king of Babylon of the Caldees 16 Who pulled down the house and burnt it and carried away the people captives unto Babylon 17 But in the first year that king Cyrus reigned over the countrey of Babylon Cyrus the king wrote to build up this house 18 And the holy vessels of gold and of silver that Nebuchodonosor had carried away out of the house at Jerusalem and had set them in his own temple those Cyrus the king brought forth again out of the temple at Babylon and they were delivered to ‖ Or Zorobabel which is also Sanabassar the ruler so as Zorobabel seemeth to be added to the text Ezra 1.8 Zorobabel and to Sanabassarus the ruler 19 With commandment that he should carry away the same vessels and put them in the temple at Jerusalem and that the temple of the Lord should be built in his place 20 Then the same Sanabassarus being come hither laid the foundations of the house of the Lord at Jerusalem and from that time to this being still a building it is not yet fully ended 21 Now therefore if it seem good unto the king let search be made among the ‖ Or rolls records of king Cyrus 22 And if it be found that the building of the house of the Lord at Jerusalem hath been done with the consent of king Cyrus and if our lord the king be so minded let him signifie unto us thereof 23 Then commanded king Darius to seek among the records at Babylon and so at Echatana the palace which is in the countrey of Media there was found a ‖ Or place roll wherein these things were recorded 24 In the first year of the reign of Cyrus king Cyrus commanded that the house of the Lord at Jerusalem should be built again where they do sacrifice with continual fire 25 Whos 's height shall be sixty cubits and the breadth sixty cubits with three rowes of hewn stones and one row of new wood of that countrey and the expenses thereof to be given out of the house of king Cyrus 26 And that the holy vessels of the house of the Lord both of gold and silver that Nebuchodonosor took out of the house at Jerusalem and brought to Babylon should be restored to the house at Jerusalem and be set in the place where they were before 27 And also he commanded that Sisinnes the governour of Syria and Phenice and Sathrabuzanes and their companions and those which were appointed rulers in Syria and Phenice should be careful not to meddle with the place but suffer Zorobabel the servant of the Lord and governour of Judea and the elders of the Jews to build the house of the Lord in that place 28 I have commanded also to have it built up whole again and that they look diligently to help those that be of the captivity of the Jews till the house of the Lord be finished 29 And out of the tribute of Celosyria and Phenice a portion carefully to be given these men for the sacrifices of the Lord that is to Zorobabel the governour for bullocks and rams and lambs 30 And also corn salt wine and oyl and that continually every year without further question according as the priests that be in Jerusalem shall signifie to be daily spent 31 That ‖ Or drink-offerings offerings may be made to the most high God for the king and for his children and that they may pray for their lives 32 And he commanded that whosoever should transgress yea or make light of any thing afore spoken or written out of his own house should a tree be taken and he thereon be hanged and all his goods seised for the king 33 The Lord therefore whose name is there called upon utterly destroy every king and nation that stretcheth out his hand to hinder or endamage that house of the Lord in Jerusalem 34 I Darius the king have ordained that according unto these things it be done with diligence CHAP. VII 1 Sisinnes and others help forward the building 5 The temple is finished and dedicated 10 The pass-over is kept THen * Ezra 6.13 Sisinnes the governour of Celosyria and Phenice and Sathrabuzanes with their companions following the commandments of king Darius 2 Did very carefully oversee the holy works assisting the ancients of the Jews and governours of the temple 3 And so the holy works prospered when Aggeus and Zacharias the prophets prophesied 4 And they finished these things by the commandment of the Lord God of Israel and with ‖ Or the decr●● the consent of Cyrus Darius and Artaxerxes kings of Persia 5 And thus was the holy house finished in † Heb. the third day Ezra 6.15 the three and twentieth day of the moneth Adar in the sixth year of Darius king of the Persians 6 And the children of Israel the priests and the Levites and other that were of the captivity that were added unto them did according to the things written in the book of Moses 7 And to the dedication of the temple of the Lord they offered an hundred bullocks two hundred rams four hundred lambs 8 And twelve goats for the sin of all Israel according to the number of the ‖ Or tribes chief of the tribes of Israel 9 The priests also and the Levites stood arayed in their vestments according to their † Heb. divisions Ezra 6.18 kindreds in the services of the Lord God of Israel according to the book of Moses and the porters at every gate 10 And the children of Israel ‖ Or with those that c. that were of the captivity held the pass-over the fourteenth day of the first moneth after that the priests and the Levites were sanctified 11 They that were of the captivity were not all sanctified together but the Levites were all sanctified together 12 And so they offered the pass-over for all them of the captivity and for their brethren the priests and for themselves 13 And the children of Israel that came out of the captivity did eat even all they that had separated themselves from the abominations of the people of the land and sought the Lord. 14 And they kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days making merry before the Lord 15 For that he had turned the ‖ Or minde counsel of the king of Assyria towards them to strengthen their hands in the works of the Lord God of Israel CHAP. three days I will speak other things unto thee and declare unto thee mighty and wondrous things 57 Then went I forth into the field giving praise and thanks greatly unto the most High because of his wonders which he did in time 58 And because he governeth the same and such things as fall in their seasons and there I sat three days CHAP. XIV 1 A voice out of a bush ●a●eth Esdras 10 and telleth him that the world waxeth old 22 He desireth because the law was burnt to write all a●ain 24 and is bid to get swift writers 39 He and they are filled with understanding 45 But he is charged not to publish all that is written ANd it came to pass upon the third day I sat under an oak and behold there came a voice out of a bush over against me and said Esdras Esdras 2 And I said Here am I Lord and I stood up upon my feet 3 Then said he unto me * Exed 3.2 8. I held him by me a long season 5 And told him many wondrous things and shewed him the secrets of the times and the end and commanded him saying 6 These words shalt thou declare and these shalt thou hide 7 And now I say unto thee 8 That thou lay up in thy heart the signs that I have shewed and the dreams that thou hast seen and the interpretations which thou hast heard 9 For thou shalt be taken away from all and from henceforth thou shalt remain with my son and with such as be like thee until the times be ended 10 For the world hath lost his youth and the times begin to was old 11 For the world is divided into twelve parts and the ten parts of it are gone already and half of a tenth part 12 And there remaineth that which is after the half of the tenth part 13 Now therefore set thine house in order and reprove thy people comfort such of them as be in trouble and 〈◊〉 renounce corruption 14 Let go from thee mortal thoughts cast away the burdens of man put off now the weak nature 15 give thee to drink 39 Then opened I my mouth and behold he reached me a full cup which was full as it were with water but the colour of it was like fire 40 And I took it and drank and when I had drunk of it my heart uttered understanding and wisdom grew in my breast for my spirit strengthned my memory 41 And my mouth was opened and shut no more 42 The Highest gave understanding unto the five men and they wrote the wonderful visions of the night that were told which they knew not and they sat fourty days and they wrote in the day and at night they are bread 43 As for me I spake in the day and I held not my tongue by night 44 In fourty days they wrote ‖ Or 〈◊〉 hundred and four two hundred and four books 45 And it came to pass when the fourty days were fulfilled that the Highest spake saying The first that thou hast written publish openly that the worthy and unworthy may read it 46 But keep the seventy last that thou mayest deliver them onely to such as be wise among the people 47 For in them is the spring of understanding the fountain of wisdom and ‖ Or the 〈◊〉 of knowledge the stream of knowledge 48 And I did so CHAP. XV. 1 This prophesie is certain 5 God will take vengeance
these days I did appear unto you but I did neither eat nor drink but you did see a vision 20 Now therefore give God thanks for I go up to him that sent me but write all things which are done in a book 21 And when they arose they saw him no more 22 Then they confessed the great and wonderful works of God and how the angel of the Lord had appeared unto them CHAP. XIII The thanksgiving unto God which Tobit wrote THen Tobit wrote a prayer of rejoycing and said Blessed be God that liveth for ever and blessed be his kingdom 2 * Deut. 32.39 1 Sam. 2.6 Wisd 16.13 For he doth scourge and hath mercy he leadeth down to hell and bringeth up again neither is there any that can avoid his hand 3 Confess him before the Gentiles ye children of Israel for he hath scattered us among them 4 There declare his greatness and extol him before all the living for he is our Lord and he is the God our father for ever 5 And he will scourge us for our iniquities and will have mercy again and will gather us out of all nations among whom he hath scattered us 6 If you turn to him with your whole heart and with your whole minde and deal uprightly before him then will he turn unto you and will not hide his face from you Therefore see what he will do with you and confess him with your whole mouth and praise the Lord of might and extol the everlasting King In the land of my captivity do I praise him and declare his might and majesty to a sinful ration O ye sinners turn and do justice before him who can tell if he will accept you and have mercy on you 7 I will extol my God and my soul shall praise the king of heaven and shall rejoyce in his greatness 8 Let all men speak and let all praise him for his righteousness 9 O Jerusalem the holy city ‖ Or he will lay a scourge upon the works of thy children he will scourge thee for thy childrens works and will have mercy again on the sons of the righteous 10 Give praise to the Lord for he is good and praise the everlasting King that his tabernacle may be builded in thee again with joy and ‖ Or to make let him make joyful there in thee those that are captives and love in thee for ever those that are miserable 11 Many nations shall come from far to the name of the Lord God with gifts in their hands even gifts to the King of heaven all generations shall praise thee with great joy 12 Cursed are all they which hate thee and blessed shall all be which love thee for ever 13 Rejo●ce and be glad for the children of the just for they shall be gathered together and shall bless the Lord of the just 14 O blessed are they which love thee for they shall rejoyce in thy ‖ Or prosperity peace blessed are they which have been sorrowful for all thy scourges for they shall rejoyce for thee when they have seen all thy glory and shall be glad for ever 15 Let my soul bless God the great King 16 For Jerusalem shall be built up with sapphires and emeralds and precious stone thy walls and towers and battlements with pure gold 17 And the streets of Jerusalem shall be paved with beryl and carbuncle and stones of Ophir 18 And all her streets shall say Alleluja and they shall praise him saying Blessed be God which hath extolled it for ever CHAP. XIV 3 Tobit giveth instructions to his son 8 specially to leave Nineve 11 He and his wise die and are buried 12 Tobias removeth to Ecbatane 14 and there died after he had heard of the destruction of Nineve SO Tobit made an end of praising God 2 And he was eight and fifty years old when he lost his sight which was restored to him after eight years and he gave alms and he ‖ Or did more and more f●●r increased in the fear of the Lord God and praised him 3 And when he was very aged he called his son and the six sons of his son and said to him My son take thy children for behold I am aged and am ready to depart out of this life 4 Go into Media my son for I surely beleeve those things which Jonas the prophet spake of Nineve that it shall be overthrown and that for a time peace shall rather be in Media and that our brethren shall lie scattered in the earth from that good land and Jerusalem shall be desolate and the house of God in it shall be burned and shall be desolate for a time 5 * Ezc. 3. ● 6.14 And that again God will have mercy on them and bring them again into the sand where they shall build a temple but not like to the first until the time of that age be fulfilled and afterward they shall return from all places of their captivity and build up Jerusalem gloriously and the house of God shall be built in it ‖ For ever is not in the Romane copy for ever with a glorious building as the prophets have spoken thereof 6 And all nations shall turn and fear the Lord God truly and shall bury their idols 7 So shall all nations praise the Lord and his people shall confess God and the Lord shall exalt his people and all those which love the Lord God in truth and justice shall rejoyce shewing mercy to our brethren 8 And now my son depart out of Nineve because that those things which the prophet Jonas spake shall surely come to pass 9 But keep thou the law and the commandments and shew thy self merciful and just that it may go well with thee 10 And bury me decently and thy mother with me but tarry no longer at Nineve Remember my son how Aman handled Achiacharu● that brought him up how out of light he brought him into darkness and how he rewarded him again yet Achiacharus was ‖ Or preserved saved but the other had his reward for he went down into darkness ‖ Jutus readeth Nitzha Manasses gave alms and escaped the snares of death ‖ Rom. which he had set which they had set for him but Aman fell into the snare and perished 11 Wherefore now my son consider what alms doeth and how righteousness doth deliver When he had said these things he gave up the Ghost in the bed being an hundred and eight and fifty years old and ‖ Or. they he buried him honourably 12 And when Anna his mother was dead he buried her with his father but Tobias departed with his wife and children to Ecbatane to Raguel his father in law 13 Where he became old with honour and he buried his father and mother in law honourably and he ‖ Or. possissed inherited their substance and his father Tobits 14 And he died at Ecbatane in Media being an hundred and seven and twenty years
another nation without both by speaking and writing my grandfather Jesus when he had much given himself to the reading of the law and the prophets and other books of our fathers and had gotten therein good judgement was drawn on also himself to write something pertaining to learning and wisdom to the intent that those which are desirous to learn and are add●cted to these things might profit much more in living according to the law Wherefore let me intreat you to read it with favour and attention and to pardon us wherein we may seem to come short of some words which we have laboured to interpret For the same things uttered in Hebrew and translated into another tongue have not the same force in them and not onely these things but the law it self and the † Gr. prophesies prophets and the rest of the books have no small ‖ Or excellency difference when they are spoken in their own language For in the eight and thirtieth year coming into Egypt when Euergetes was king and continuing there some time I found a ‖ Or help of learning book of no small learning therefore I thought it most necessary for me to bestow some diligence and travel to interpret it using great watchfulness and skill in that space to bring the book to an end and set it forth for them also which in a strange countrey are willing to learn being prepared before in manners to live after the law CHAP. I. 1 All wisdom is from God 10 He giveth it to them that love him 12 The sear of God is full of many blessings 28 To fear God without hypocrisy ALl * 1 King 3.9 wisdom cometh from the Lord and is with him for ever 2 Who can number the sand of the sea and the drops of rain and the days of eternity 3 Who can finde out the height of heaven and the breadth of the earth and the deep and wisdom 4 Wisdom hath been created before all things and the understanding of prudence from everlasting 5 The word of God most High is the fountain of wisdom and her ways are everlasting commandments 6 * Rom. 11.34 To whom hath the root of wisdom been revealed or who hath known her wise counsels 7 Unto whom hath the knowledge of wisdom been made manifest and who hath understood her great experience 8 There is one wise and greatly to be feared the Lord sitting upon his throne 9 He created her and saw her and numbred her and poured her out upon all his works 10 She is with all flesh according to his gist and he hath given her to them that love him 11 The fear of the Lord is honour and glory and gladness and a crown of rejoycing 12 The fear of the Lord maketh a merry heart and giveth joy and gladness and a long life 13 Whoso feareth the Lord it shall go well with him at the last and he ‖ Or shall blessed shall finde favour in the day of his death 14 * Prov. 1.7 Ps 111.10 To fear the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and it was created with the faithful in the womb 15 She hath built an everlasting foundation with men and she shall continue * 2 Chr. 20.21 with their seed 16 To fear the Lord is fulness of wisdom and filleth men with her fruits 17 She filleth all their house with things desirable and the garners with her increase 18 The fear of the Lord is a crown of wisdom making peace and perfect health to flourish both which are the gifts of God and it enlargeth their rejoycing that love him 19 Wisdom raineth down skill and knowledge of understanding and exalteth them to honour that hold her fast 20 The root of wisdom is to fear the Lord and the branches thereof are long life 21 The fear of the Lord driveth away sins and where it is present it turneth away wrath 22 A furious man cannot ‖ Or escape punishment be justified for the sway of his fury shall be his destruction 23 A patient man will bear for a time and afterward joy shall spring up unto him 24 He will hide his words for a time and the lips of many shall declare his wisdom 25 The parables of knowledge are in the treasures of wisdom but godliness is an abomination to a sinner 26 If thou desire wisdom keep the commandments and the Lord shall give her unto thee 27 For the fear of the Lord is wisdom and instruction and faith and meekness are his delight 28 ‖ Or be not disobedient to Distrust not the fear of the Lord when thou art poor and come not unto him with a double heart 29 Be nor an hypocrite in the sight of men and take good heed what thou speakest 30 Exalt not thy fell lest thou fall and bring dishonour upon thy soul and so God discover thy secrets and cast thee down in the midst of the congregation because thou camest not in truth to the sear of the Lord but thy heart is full of deceit CHAP. II. 1 Gods servants must look for trouble 7 and be patient and trust in him 12 For wo to them that do not so 15 But they that fear the Lord will do so MY son if * Matt. 4.1 2 Tim. 3.12 1 Pet. 4.12 thou come to serve the Lord prepare thy soul for temptation 2 Set thy heart aright and constantly endure and ‖ Or haste not make not haste in time of trouble 3 Cleave unto him and depart not away that thou mayest be increased at thy last end 4 Whatsoever is brought upon thee take cheerfully and be patient when thou art changed to a low estate 5 * Wild. 26. Prov. 17.3 For gold is tried in the fire and acceptable men in the furnace of adversity 6 Beleeve in him and he will help thee order thy way aright and trust in him 7 Ye that fear the Lord wait for his mercy and go not aside lest ye fall 8 Ye that fear the Lord beleeve him and your reward shall not fail 9 Ye that fear the Lord hope for good and for everlasting joy and mercy 10 Look at the generations of old and see * Psal 37.25 did ever any trust in the Lord and was confounded or did any abide in his fear and was forsaken or whom did he ever despise that called upon him 11 For the Lord is full of compassion and mercy long-suffering and very pitiful and forgiveth sins and saveth in time of affliction 12 Wo be to fearful hearts and faint hands and the sinner that goeth two ways 13 Wo unto him that is faint-hearted for he beleeveth not therefore shall he not be defended 14 Wo unto you that have lost patience and what will ye do when the Lord shall visit you 15 They that fear the Lord will not disobey his word and * John 14.23 they that love him will keep his ways 16 They that fear the Lord will seek that which
praise him therewith 23 Draw near unto me you unlearned and dwell in the house of learning 24 Wherefore are you slow and what say you of these things seeing your souls are very thirsty 25 I opened my mouth and said * Isai 55.1 Buy her for your selves without money 26 Put your neck under the yoke and let your soul receive instruction she is hard at hand to finde 27 * Chap. 6.19 Behold with your eyes how that I have had but little labour and have gotten unto me much rest 28 Get learning with a great sum of money get much gold by her 29 Let your soul rejoyce in his mercy and be not ashamed of his praise 30 Work your work betimes and in his time he will give you your reward ¶ BARUCH CHAP. I. 1 Baruch wrote a book in Babylon 5 The Jews there wept at the reading of it 7 They send money and the book to the brethren at Jerusalem ANd these are the words of the book which Baruch the son of Nerias the son of Maasias the son of Sedecias the son of Asadias the son of Chelcias wrote in Babylon 2 In the fifth year and in the seventh day of the moneth what time as the Caldeans took Jerusalem and burnt it with fire 3 And Baruch did read the words of this book in the hearing of Jechonias the son of ‖ Or Joacim Joachim king of Juda and in the ears of all the people that came to hear the book 4 And in the hearing of the nobles and of the kings sons and in the hearing of the elders and of all the people from the lowest unto the highest even of all them that dwelt at Babylon by the river Sud 5 Whereupon they wept fasted ‖ Or and vowed vows and prayed before the Lord. 6 They made also a collection of money according to every mans power 7 And they sent it to Jerusalem unto ‖ Or Joacim Joachim the high priest the son of Chescias son of Salom and to the priests and to all the people which were sound with him at Jerusalem 8 At the same time when he received the vessels of the house of the Lord that were carried out of the temple to return them into the land of Juda the tenth day of the moneth Sivan namely silver vessels which Sedecias the son of Josias king of Juda had made 9 After that Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon had carried away Jechonias and the princes and the ‖ Or prisoners captives and the mighty men and the people of the land from Jerusalem and brought them unto Babylon 10 And they said behold we have sent you money to buy you burnt-offerings and sin-offerings and incense and prepare ye † Gr corruptly for min●ba manna and offer upon the altar of the Lord our God 11 And pray for the life of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon and for the life of Balthalar his son that their days may be upon earth as the days of heaven * meat-offering 12 And the Lord will give us strength and lighten our eyes and we shall live under the shadow of Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon and under the shadow of Balthasar his son and we shall serve them many days and finde favour in their sight 13 Pray for us also unto the Lord our God for we have sinned against the Lord our God and unto this day the fury of the Lord and his wrath is not turned from us 14 And ye shall read this book which we have sent unto you to make confession in the house of the Lord upon the feasts and solemn days 15 And ye shall say * Chap. ● 6 To the Lord our God belongeth righteousness but unto us the confusion of faces as it is coms to pass this day unto them of Juda and to the inhabitants of Jerulalem 16 And to our kings and to our princes and to our priests and to our prophets and to our fathers 17 For we have * Dan. 9.5 sinned before the Lord 18 And disobeyed him and have not hearkned unto the voice of the Lord our God to walk in the commandments that he gave us openly 19 Since the day that the Lord brought our forefathers out of the land of Egypt unto this present day we have been disobedient unto the Lord our God and we have been negligent in not hearing his voice 20 * Deut. 28.15 Wherefore the evils cleaved unto us and the curse which the Lord appointed by Moses his servant at the time that he brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt to give us a land that floweth with milk and honey like as it is to see this day 21 Nevertheless we have not hearkned unto the voice of the Lord our God according unto all the words of the prophets whom he sent unto us 22 But every man followed the imagination of his own wicked heart to serve strange gods and to do evil in the sight of the Lord our God CHAP. II. The prayer and confession which the Jews at Babylon made and sent in that book unto the brethre●● 〈◊〉 Jerusalem THerefore the Lord hath made good his word which he pronounced against us and against our judges that judged Israel and against our kings and against our princes and against the men of Israel and Juda. 2 To bring upon us great plagues such as never hapned under the whose heaven as it came to pass in Jerusalem according to the things that were written in the law of Moses 3 That a man should * Deut. 28.53 eat the flesh of his own son and the flesh of his own daughter 4 Moreover he hath delivered them to be in subjection to all the kingdoms that are round about us to be as a reproach and desolation among all the people round about where the Lord hath scattered them 5 Thus we † Gr. were beneath and not above were cast down and not exalted becaused we have sinned against the Lord our God and have not been obedient unto his voice 6 * Ch. 1.15 To the Lord our God appertaineth righteousness but unto us and to our fathers open shame as appeareth this day 7 For all these plagues are come upon us which the Lord hath pronounced against us 8 Yet have we not prayed before the Lord that we might turn every one from the imaginations of his wicked heart 9 Wherefore the Lord watched over us for evil and the Lord hath brought it upon us for the Lord is righteous in all his works which he hath commanded us 10 Yet we have not hearkned unto his voice to walk in the commandments of the Lord that he hath set before us 11 * Dan. 9.15 And now O Lord God of Israel that hast brought thy people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and high arm and with signs and with wonders and with great power and hast gotten thy self a name as appeareth this day 12 O Lord our
God we have sinned we have done ungodly we have dealt unrighteously in all mine ordinances 13 Let thy wrath turn from us for we are but a few left among the heathen where thou hast scattered us 14 Hear our prayers O Lord and our petitions and deliver us for thine own sake and give us favour in the sight of them which have led us away 15 That all the earth may know that thou art the Lord our God because † Gr. thy came is called upon Israel Israel and his posterity is called by thy name 16 O Lord * Deut. 26.15 Isa 63.15 look down from thy holy house and consider us bow down thine ear O Lord to hear us 17 Open thine eyes and behold for the * Ps 6.5 115.17 Isa 38.15 19. dead that are in the graves whose † Gr. spirit or sis● souls are taken from their bodies will give unto the Lord neither praise nor righteousness 18 But the soul that is greatly vexed which goeth stooping and feeble and the eyes that sail and the hungry soul will give thee praise and righteousness O Lord. 19 * Dan. 9.18 Therefore we do not make our humble supplication before thee O Lord our God for the righteousness of our fathers and of our kings 20 For thou hast sent out thy wrath and indignation upon us as thou hast spoken by thy servants the prophets saying 21 * Jer. 27.11 Thus faith the Lord Bow down your shoulders to serve the king of Babylon so shall ye remain in the land that I gave unto your fathers 22 But if ye will not hear the voice of the Lord to serve the king of Babylon 23 I will cause to cease out of the cities of Juda and from without Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of joy the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride and the whole land shall be desolate of inhabitants 24 But we would not hearken unto thy voice to serve the king of Babylon therefore hast thou made good the words that thou spakest by thy servants the prophets namely that the bones of our kings and the bones of our fathers should be taken out of their places 25 And so they are cast out to the heat of the day and to the frost of the night and they died in great miseries by famine by sword and by pestilence 26 And the house which is called by thy name hast thou said waste as it is to be seen this day for the wickedness of the house of Israel and the house of Juda. 27 O Lord our God thou hast dealt with us after all thy goodness and according to all that great mercy of thine 28 As thou spakest by thy servant Moses in the day when thou didst command him to write thy law before the children of Israel saying 29 * Lev. 26.14 Deu. 28.15 If ye will not hear my voice surely † Gr. this great s●arm this very great multitude shall be turned into a small number among the nations where I will scatter them 30 For I knew that they would not hear me because it is a stiff-necked people but in the land of their captivities they shall ‖ Or come to themselves remember themselves 31 And shall know that I am the Lord their God for I will give them an heart and ears to hear 32 And they shall praise me in the land of their captivity and think upon my name 33 And return from their stiff † Gr. back neck and from their wicked deeds for they shall remember the way of their fathers which finned before the Lord. 34 And I will bring them again into the land which I promised with an oath unto their fathers Abraham Isaac and Jacob and they shall be lords of it and I will increase them and they shall not be diminished 35 And I will make an everlasting covenant with them to be their God and they shall be my people and I will no more drive my people of Israel out of the land that I have given them CHAP. III. 3 The rest of their prayer and confession contained in that book which Baruch wrote and sent to Jerusalem 30 Wisdom was shewed first to Jacob and was seen upon the earth O Lord almighty God of Israel the soul in anguish the troubled spirit crieth unto thee 2 Hear O Lord and have mercy for thou art merciful and have pity upon us because we have sinned before thee 3 For thou endurest for ever and we perish utterly 4 O Lord almighty thou God of Israel hear now the prayers of the dead Israelites and of their children which have sinned before thee and not hearkned unto the voice of thee their God for the which cause these plagues cleave unto us 5 Remember not the iniquities of our forefathers but think upon thy power and thy name now at this time 6 For thou art the Lord our God and thee O Lord will we praise 7 And for this cause thou hast put thy fear in our hearts to the intent that we should call upon thy name and praise thee in our captivity for * Deut. 30.1 we have called to minde all the iniquity of our forefathers that sinned before thee 8 Behold we are yet this day in our captivity where thou hast scattered us for a reproach and a curse and to be subject to payments according to all the iniquities of our fathers which departed from the Lord our God 9 Hear Israel the commandments of life give ear to understand wisdom 10 How hapneth it Israel that thou art in thine enemies land that thou art waxen old in a strange countrey that thou art defiled with the dead 11 That thou art counted with them that go down into the grave 12 Thou hast forsaken the fountain of wisdom 13 For if thou hadst walked in the way of God thou shouldest have dwelled in peace for ever 14 Learn where is wisdom where is strength where is understanding that thou mayest know also where is length of days and life where is the light of the eyes and peace 15 * Joh. 2● 12 20. Who hath found out her place or who hath come into her treasures 16 Where are the princes of the heathen become and such as ruled the beasts upon the earth 17 They that had their pastime with the fouls of the air and they that hoarded up silver and gold wherein men trust and made no end of their getting 18 For they that wrought in silver and were so careful and whose works are unsearchable 19 They are vanished and gone down to the grave and others are come up in their steads 20 Young men have seen light and dwelt upon the earth but the way of knowledge have they not known 21 Nor understood the paths thereof nor laid hold of it their children were far off from that way 22 It hath not been heard of in Chanaan neither hath it been seen in Theman 23 The
full of the holy Ghost retumed from Jordan and was led by the spirit into the wilderness 2 Being fourty days tempted of the devil and in those days he did eat nothing and when they were ended he afterward hungred 3 And the devil said unto him It thou be the Son of God command this stone that it be made bread 4 And Jesus answered him saying It is written That man shall not live by bread alone but by every word of God 5 And the devil taking him up into an high mountain shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time 6 And the devil said unto him All this power will I give thee and the glory of them for that is delivered unto me and to whomsoever I will I give it 7 If thou therefore wilt ‖ Or fall down before me worship me all shall be thine 8 And Jesus answered and said unto him Get thee behinde me Satan for it is written Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God and him onely shalt thou serve 9 And he brought him to Jerusalem and set him on a pinacle of the temple and said unto him If thou be the Son of God cast thyself down from hence 10 For it is written He shall give his angels charge over thee to keep thee 11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone 12 And Jesus answering said unto him It is said Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God 13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation he departed from him for a season 14 ¶ And Jesus returned in the power of the spirit into Galilee and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about 15 And he taught in their synagogues being glorified of all 16 ¶ And he came to * Mat. 13.54 Nazareth wher● he had been brought up and as his custom was he went into the ●ynagogue on the sabbath-day and stood up for to read 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias and when he had opened the book he found the place where it was written 18 * Jsa 61.1 The spirit of the Lord is upon me because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor he hath sent me to heal the broken-hearted to preach deliverance to the captives and recovering of sight to the blinde to set at liberty them that are bruised 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book and he gave it again to the minister and sat down and the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastned on him 21 And he began to say unto them This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears 22 And all bare him witness and wondred at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth And they said Is not this Josephs son 23 And he said unto them Ye will surely say unto me this proverb Physician heal thyself whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum do also here in thy countrey 24 And he said Verily I say unto you No * Mat. 13.57 prophet is accepted in his own countrey 25 But I tell you of a truth * 1 Kin. 17.9 many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias when the heaven was shut up three years and six moneths when great famine was throughout all the land 26 But unto none of them was Elias sent save unto Sarepta a city of Sidon unto a woman that was a widow 27 * 2 Kin. 5.14 And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet and none of them was cleansed saving Naaman the Syrian 28 And all they in the synagogue when they heard these things were filled with wrath 29 And rose up and thrust him out of the city and led him unto the ‖ Or edge brow of the hill whereon their city was built that they might cast him down headlong 30 But he passing through the midst of them went his way 31 And came down to Capernaum a city of Galilee and taught them on the sabbath-days 32 And they were astonished at his doctrine * Mat. 7.29 for his word was with power 33 ¶ * Mar. 1.23 And in the synagogue there was a man which had a spirit of an unclean devil and cried out with a loud voice 34 Saying ‖ Or Away Let us alone what have we to do with thee thou Jesus of Nazareth art thou come to destroy us I know thee who thou art the holy One of God 35 And Jesus rebuked him saying Hold thy peace and come out of him And when the devil had thrown him in the midst he came out of him and hurt him not 36 And they were all amazed and spake among themselves saying What a word is this for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits and they come out 37 And the fame of him went out into every place of the countrey round about 38 ¶ * Mat. 8.14 And he arose out of the synagogue and entred into Simons house and Simons wives mother was taken with a great fever and they besought him for her 39 And he stood over her and rebuked the fever and it left her And immediately she arose and ministred unto them 40 ¶ Now when the sun was setting all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him and he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them 41 * Mar. 1.34 And devils also came out of many crying out and saying Thou art Christ the Son of God And he rebuking them suffered them not ‖ Or to say that they knew him to be Christ to speak for they knew that he was Christ 42 And when it was day he departed and went into a desert place and the people fought him and came unto him and stayed him that he should not depart from them 43 And he said unto them I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also for therefore am I sent 44 And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee CHAP. V. 1 Christ teacheth the people out of Peters ship 4 in a miraculous taking of fishes sheweth how he will make him and his partners fishers of men 12 cleanseth the leper 16 prayeth in the wilderness 18 healeth one sick of the palsie 27 calleth Matthew the publican 29 eateth with sinners as being the physician of souls 34 foretelleth the fastings and afflictions of the apostles after his ascension 36 and likeneth faint-hearted and weak disciples to old bottles and worn garments ANd * Mat. 4.18 it came to pass that as the people preassed upon him to hear the word of God he stood by the lake of Gennesareth 2 And saw two ships standing by the lake but the fishermen were gone out of them and were washing their nets 3 And he entred into one of the ships which was Simons and
9.12 Psa 34.29 that the scripture should be fulfilled A bone of him shall not be broken 37 And again another scripture saith * Zec. 12.10 They shall look on him whom they pierced 38 ¶ * Mat. 27.57 And after this Joseph of Arimathea being a disciple of Jesus but secretly for fear of the Jews besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus and Pilate gave him leave He came therefore and took the body of Jesus 39 And there came also Nicodemus which at the first came to Jesus by night and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes about an hundred pound weight 40 Then took they the body of Jesus and wound it in linen clothes with the spices as the manner of the Jews is to bury 41 Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden and in the garden a new sepulchre wherein was never man yet laid 42 There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews preparation day for the sepulchre was night at hand CHAP. XX. 1 Mary cometh to the sepulchre 3 so do Peter and John ignorant of the resurrection 11 Jesus appeareth to Mary Magdalene 19 and to his disciples 24 The incredulity and confession of Thomas 30 The scripture is sufficient to salvation THe * Mat. 28.1 Mar. 16.1 first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early when it was yet dark unto the sepulchre and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre 2 Then she runneth and cometh to Simon Peter and to the * Chr. 13.23 21.20 other disciple whom Jesus loved and saith unto them They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre and we know not where they have laid him 3 Peter therefore went forth and that other disciple and came to the sepulchre 4 So they ran both together and the other disciple did outrun Peter and came first to the sepulchre 5 And he stooping down and looking in saw the linen clothes lying yet went he not in 6 Then cometh Simon Peter following him and went into the sepulchre and seeth the linen clothes lie 7 And the napkin that was about his head not lying with the linen clothes but wrapped together in a place by it self 8 Then went in also that other disciple which came first to the sepulchre and he saw and beleeved 9 For as yet they knew not the scripture that he must rise again from the dead 10 Then the disciples went away again unto their own home 11 ¶ But Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping and as she wept she stooped down and looked into the sepulchre 12 And seeth two angels in white sitting the one at the head and the other at the feet where the body of Jesus had layen 13 And they say unto her Woman why weepest thou She saith unto them Because they have taken away my Lord and I know not where they have said him 14 And when she had thus said she turned her self back and saw Jesus standing and knew not that it was Jesus 15 Jesus saith unto her Woman why weepest thou whom seekest thou she supposing him to be the gardener saith unto him Sir if thou have born him hence tell me where thou hast ●aid him and I will take him away 16 Jesus saith unto her Mary She turned her self and saith unto him Rabboni which is to say Master 17 Jesus saith unto her Touch me not for I am not yet ascended to my Father but go to my brethren and say unto them I ascend unto my Father and your Father and to my God and your God 18 Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord and that he had spoken these things unto her 19 ¶ * Mar. 16.14 Then the same day at evening being the first day of the week when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews came Jesus and stood in the midst and saith unto them Peace be unto you 20 And when he had so said he shewed unto them his hands and his side Then were the disciples glad when they saw the Lord. 21 Then said Jesus to them again Peace be unto you as my Father hath sent me even so send I you 22 And when he had said this he breathed on them and saith unto them Receive ye the holy Ghost 23 * Mat. 18.18 Whos 's soever sins ye remit they are remitted unto them and whose soever sins ye retain they are retained 24 ¶ But Thomas one of the twelve called Didymus was not with them when Jesus came 25 The other disciples therefore said unto him We have seen the Lord. But he said unto them Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails and put my finger into the print of the nails and thrust my hand into his side I will not beleeve 26 ¶ And after eight days again his disciples were within and Thomas with them then came Jesus the doors being shut and stood in the midst and said Peace be unto you 27 Then saith he to Thomas Reach hither thy finger and behold my hands and reach hither thy hand and thrust it into my side and be not faithless but beleeving 28 And Thomas answered and said unto him My Lord and my God 29 Jesus saith unto him Thomas because thou hast seen me thou hast beleeved blessed are they that have not seen and yet have beleeved 30 ¶ * Chap. 21.25 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples which are not written in this book 31 But these are written that ye might beleeve that Jesus is the Christ the Son of God and that beleeving ye might have life through his name CHAP. XXI 1 christ appearing again to his disciples was known of them by the great draught of fishes 12 He dineth with them 15 earnestly commandeth Peter to seed his lambs and sheep 18 foretelleth him of his death 32 rebuketh his curiosity touching John 25 The conclusion AFter these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias and on this wife shewed he himself 2 There were together Simon Peter and Thomas called Didymus and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee and the sons of Zebedee and two other of his disciples 3 Simon Peter saith unto them I go a fishing They say unto him We also go with thee They went forth and entred into a ship immediately and that night they caught nothing 4 But when the morning was now come Jesus stood on the shore but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus 5 Then Jesus saith unto them ‖ Or S●rs Children have ye any meat They answered him No. 6 And he said unto them Cast the net on the right side of the ship and ye shall finde They cast therefore and now they were not able to draw it for the multitude of fishes 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter It is the Lord. Peter heard that it was the Lord he girt his fishers coat unto him for he was naked and did cast himself into the sea 8 And the other disciples came in a little ship for they were not far from land but as it were two hundred cubits dragging the net with fishes 9 Assoon then as they were come to land they saw a fire of coals there and fish laid thereon and bread 10 Jesus saith unto them Bring of the fish which ye have now caught 11 Simon Peter went up and drew the net to land full of great fishes an hundred and fifty and three and for all there were so many yet was not the net broken 12 Jesus saith unto them Come and dine And none of the disciples durst ask him Who art thou knowing that it was the Lord. 13 Jesus then cometh and taketh bread and giveth them and fish likewise 14 This is now the third time that Jesus shewed himself to his disciples after that he was risen from the dead 15 ¶ So when they had dined Jesus saith to Simon Peter Simon son of Jonas lovest thou me more then these He saith unto him Yea Lord thou knowest that I love thee He saith unto him Feed my lambs 16 He saith to him again the second time Simon son of Jonas lovest thou me He saith unto him Yea Lord thou knowest that I love thee He saith unto him Feed my sheep 17 He saith unto him the third time Simon son of Jonas lovest thou me Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time Lovest thou me And he said unto him Lord thou knowest all things thou knowest that I love thee Jesus saith unto him Feed my sheep 18 Verily verily I say unto thee when thou wast young thou girdedst thy self and walkedst whither thou wouldest but when thou shalt be old thou shalt stretch forth thy hands and another shall gird thee and carry thee whither thou wouldest not 19 This spake he signifying by what death he should glorifie God And when he had spoken this he saith unto him Follow me 20 Then Peterturning about seeth the disciple * Chap. 13.23 20.2 whom Jesus loved following which also leaned on his breast at supper and said Lord which is he that betrayeth thee 21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus Lord and what shall this man do 22 Jesus saith unto him If I will that he tarry till I come what is that to thee Follow thou me 23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren that that disciple should not die yet Jesus said not unto him He shall not die but If I will that he tarry till I come what is that to thee 24 This is the disciple which testifieth of these things and wrote these things and we know that his testimony is true 25 * Cha● 20.30 And there are also many other things which Jesus did the which if they should be written every one I suppose that even the world it self could not contain the books that should be written Amen ¶ The ACTS of the Apostles CHAP. I. Christ preparing his apostles to the bebolding of his ascension gathereth them together into the mount Olivet commandeth them to expect in Jerusalem the sending down of the boly Ghost promiseth after few days to send it by vertue whereof they should be witnesses unto him even to the utmost parts of the earth 9 After his ascension they are warned by two angels to depart and to set their minds upon his second coming 12 They accordingly return and giving themselves to prayer choose Matthias aposile in the place of Judas THe former treatise have I made O Theophilus of all that Jesus began both to do and teach 2 Until the day in which he was taken up after that he through the holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen 3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs being seen of them fourty days and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God 4 And ‖ Or ●●ting together with them being assembled together with them commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem but wait for the promise of the Father * Luk. 24.49 which saith he● ye have heard of me 5 * Mat. 3.11 For John truly baptized with water but ye shall be baptized with the holy Ghost not many days hence 6 When they therefore were come together they asked of him saying Lord wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel 7 And he said unto them It is not for you to know the times or the seasons which the Father hath put in his own power 8 * Chap. 2.1 But ye shall receive ‖ Or the power of the holy Ghost coming upon you power after that the holy Ghost is come upon you and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and in Samaria and unto the uttermost part of the earth 9 * Luk. 24.51 And when he had spoken these things while they beheld he was taken up and a cloud received him out of their sight 10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up behold two men stood by them in white apparel 11 Which also said Ye men of Galilee why stand ye gazing up into heaven this same Jesus which is taken up from you into heaven shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven 12 Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Oliver which is from Jerusalem a sabbath-days journey 13 And when they were come in they went up into an upper room where abode both Peter and James and John and Andrew Philip and Thomas Bartholomew and Matthew James the son of Alpheus and Simon Zelotes and Judas the brother of ●ames 14 These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus and with his brethren 15 ¶ And in those days Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples and said the number of the names together were about an hundred and twenty 16 Men and brethren This scripture must needs have been fulfilled * Psal 41.9 which the holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas which was guide to them that took Jesus 17 For he was numbred with us had obtained part of this ministery 18 * Mat. 27. ● Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity and falling headlong he burst asunder in the midst and all his bowels gushed out 19 And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue Aceldama that is to say The field of bloud 20 For it is written in the book of psalms * Ps 69.23 Let his habitation be desolate and set no man dwell therein and * Ps 109.8 His ‖ Or office or charge bishoprick let
tabernacle which is called the holiest of all 4 Which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold wherein was * Ex. 16.34 the golden pot that had manna and * Num. 17.16 A●rons rod that budded and * Deut. 10.5 1 King 8.9 〈◊〉 Chr. 5.10 the tables of the covenant 5 And * Ex. 25.22 over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercy-seat of which we cannot now speak particularly 6 Now when these things were thus ordained the priests went always into the first tabernacle accomplishing the service of God 7 But into the second went the high priest alone * Ex. 30.10 ●ev 16. 〈◊〉 once every year not without bloud which he offered for himself and for the errours of the people 8 The holy Ghost this signifying that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest while as the first tabernacle was yet standing 9 Which was a sigure for the time then present in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices that could not make him that did the service perfect as pertaining to the conscience 10 Which stood onely in meats and drinks and divers washings and carnal ‖ Or vitor ceremonies ordinances imposed on them until the time of reformation 11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands that is to say not of this building 12 Neither by the bloud of goats and calves but by his own bloud he entred in once into the holy place having obtained eternal redemption f●r us 13 For it * Lev. 1● 14 the bloud of bulls and of goats and * 1 Num. 19.17 c. the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh 14 How much more shall the bloud of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without ‖ Or fault spot to God purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God 15 And for this cause he is the Mediatour of the new testament that by means of death for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance 16 For where a testament is there must also of necessity ‖ Or be brought in be the death of the testatour 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead otherwise it is of no strength at all whilest the testatour liveth 18 Whereupon neither the first testament was ‖ Or purified dedicated without bloud 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law he took the bloud of calves and of goats with water and ‖ Or purple scarlet wooll and hyssop and sprinkled both the book and all the people 20 Saying * E● 24.8 This is the bloud of the testament which God hath enjoyned unto you 21 Moreover he sprinkled likewise with bloud both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministery 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with bloud and without shedding of bloud is no remission 23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices then these 24 For Christ is not entred into the holy places made with hands which are the figures of the true but into heaven it self now * 1 Joh. 2.1 to appear in the presence of God for us 25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often as the high priest entreth into the holy place every year with bloud of others 26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die but after this the judgement 28 So * 1 Pet. 3.18 Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation CHAP. X. 1 The weakness of the law-sacrifices 10 The sacrifice of Christs body once offered 14 for ever hath taken away sins 19 An exhortation to hold fast the faith with patience and thanksgiving FOr the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of the things can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year 4 For it is not possible that the bloud of bulls and of goats should take away sins 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world he saith * Psal 10.6 c. Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not but a body ‖ Or thou ●●st fitted me hast thou prepared me 6 In burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure 7 Then said I Lo I come In the volume of the book it is written of me to do thy will O God 8 Above when he said Sacrifice and offering and barnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not neither hadst pleasure therein which are offered by the law 9 Then said he Lo I come to do thy will O God He taketh away the first that he may establish the second 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all 11 And every priest standeth daily ministring and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices which can never take away sins 12 But this man after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever sat down on the right hand of God 13 From henceforth expecting * Psal 11● 1. 1 Cor. 15.25 Chap. 1.13 till his enemies be made his footstool 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified 15 Whereof the holy Ghost also is a witness to us for after that he had said before 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days saith the Lord I will * Jer. 31.33 put my laws into their hearts and in their minds will I write them 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more 18 Now where remission of these is there is no more offering for sin 19 Having therefore brethren ‖ Or liberty boldness to enter into the holiest by the bloud of Jesus 20 By a new and living way which he hath ‖ Or new m●d● consecrated for us through the vail that is to say his flesh 21 And having an high priest over the house of God 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and

IV. 2 John seeth the throne of God in heaven 4 The four and twenty elders 6 The four beasts full of eves before and behinde 10 The elders lay down their crowns and worship him that sat on the throne AFter this I looked and behold a door was opened in heaven and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me which said Come up hither and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter 2 And immediately I was in the spirit and behold a throne was set in heaven and one sat on the throne 3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper a sardine stone there was a rainbowe round about the throne in sight like unto an emerald 4 And round about the throne were four and twenty seats and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting clothed in white raiment and they had on their heads crowns of gold 5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thundrings and voices And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne which are the seven Spirits of God 6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal And in the midst of the throne and round about the throne were four beasts full of eyes before and behinde 7 And the first beast was like a lion and the second beast like a calf and the third beast had a face as a man and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle 8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him and they were full of eyes within and † Gr. they have no rest they rest not day and night saying * Isa 6.3 Holy holy holy Lord God Almighty which was and is is to come 9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne who liveth for ever and ever 10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne and worship him that liveth for ever and ever and cast their crowns before the throne saying 11 * Ch. 5.12 Thou art worthy O Lord to receive glory and honour and power for thou hast created all things and for thy pleasure they are and were created CHAP. V. 1 The book sealed with seven seals 9 which onely the Lamb that was slain is worthy to open 12 Therefore the elders praise him 9 and confess that he redeemed them with his blood ANd I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside sealed with seven seals 2 And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice Who is worthy to open the book and to loose the seals thereof 3 And no man in heaven nor in earth neither under the earth was able to open the book neither to look thereon 4 And I wept much because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book neither to look thereon 5 And one of the elders saith unto me Weep not behold * Gen. 19.9 the Lion of the tribe of Judah the root of David hath prevailed to open the book and to loose the seven seals thereof 6 And I behold and lo in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts and in the midst of the elders stood a Lamb as it had been slain having seven horns and seven eyes which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth 7 And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne 8 And when he had taken the book the four beasts and four and twenty eiders fell down before the Lamb having every one of them harps and golden vials full of ‖ Or in●nse odours which are the prayers of saints 9 And they sung a new song saying Thou art worthy to take the book and to open the seals thereof for thou wast slain and hast redeemed us to God by thy bloud out of every kindred and tongue and people and nation 10 * 1 Pet. 2.9 And hast made us unto our God kings and priests and we shall reign on the earth 11 And I beheld and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders and the number of them was * Dan. 7.10 ten thousand times ten thousand and thousands of thousands 12 Saying with a loud voice Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and strength and honour and glory and blessing 13 And every creature which is in heaven and on the earth and under
the wedge of gold and his sons and his daughters and his oxen and his asses and his sheep and his tent and all that he had and they brought them unto the valley of Achor 25 And Joshua said Why hast thou troubled us the LORD shall trouble thee this day And all Israel stoned him with stones and burned them with fi●● after they had stoned them with stones 26 And they raised over him a great hea● of stones unto this day So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger wherefore the name of that place was called The valley of ‖ That is trouble Achor unto this day CHAP. VIII 1 God encourageth Joshua 3 The stratagem whereby Ai was taken 29 The king thereof is hanged 30 Joshua buildeth an altar 32 writeth the law on stones 33 propoundeth blessings and cursings ANd the LORD said unto Joshua * Deu. 1.21 7.18 Fear not neither be thou dismayed take all the people of war with thee and arise go up to Ai see I have given into thy hand the king of Ai and his people and his city and his land 2 And thou shalt do to Ai and her king as thou didst unto * Ch. 6.21 Jericho and her king onely * Deu. 2● 14 the spoil thereof and the cattel thereof shall ye take for a prey unto your selves lay thee an ambush for the city behind it 3 ¶ So Joshua arose and all the people of war to go up against Ai and Joshua chose out thirty thousand mighty men of valour and sent them away by night 4 And he commanded them saying Behold ye shall lie in wait against the city even behinde the city go not very far from the city but be ye all ready 5 And I and all the people that are with me will approach unto the city and it shall come to pass when they come out against us as at the first that we will flee before them 6 For they will come out after us till we have † Heb. ●ull●d drawn them from the city for they will say They flee before us as at the first therefore we will f●●e before them 7 Then ye shall rise up from the ambush and seise upon the city for the LORD your God will deliver it into your hand 8 And it shall be when ye have taken the city that ye shall set the city on fire according to the commandment of the LORD shall ye do See I have commanded you 9 ¶ Joshua therefore sent them forth and they went to lie in ambush and abode between Beth-el and Ai on the west-side of Ai but Joshua lodged that night among the people 10 And Joshua rose up early in the morning and numbred the people and went up he and the elders of Israel before the people to Ai. 11 And all the people even the people of war that were with him went up and drew nigh and came before the city and pitched on the north-side of Ai now there was a valley between them and Ai. 12 And he took about five thousand men and set them to lie in ambush between Beth-el and Ai on the west-side ‖ Or of Ai. of the city 13 And when they had set the people even all the host that was on the north of the city and † Heb. their lying in wait their liers in wait on the west of the city Joshua went that night into the midst of the valley 14 ¶ And it came to pass when the king of Ai saw it that they hasted and rose up early and the men of the city went out against Israel to battel he and all his people at a time appointed before the plain but he wist not that there were liers in ambush against him behinde the city 15 And Joshua and all Israel made as if they were beaten before them and fled by the way of the wilderness 16 And all the people that were in Ai were called together to pursue after them and they pursued after Joshua and were drawn away from the city 17 And there was not a man left in Ai or Beth-el that went not out after Israel and they left the city open and pursued after Israel 18 And the LORD said unto Joshua Stretch out the spear that is in thy hand toward Ai for I will give it into thine hand And Joshua stretched out the spear that he had in his hand toward the city 19 And the ambush arose quickly out of their place and they ran assoon as he had stretched out his hand and they entred into the city and took it and hasted and set the city on fire 20 And when the men of Ai looked behinde them they saw and behold the smoke of the city ascended up to heaven and they had no † Heb. hand power to flee this way or that way and the people that fled to the wilderness turned back upon the pursuers 21 And when Joshua and all Israel saw that the ambush had taken the city and that the smoke of the city ascended then they turned again and slew the men of Ai. 22 And the other issued out of the city against them so they were in the midst of Israel some on this side and some on that side and they smote them so that they * Deut. 7.2 let none of them remain or escape 23 And the king of Ai they took alive and brought him to Joshua 24 And it came to pass when Israel had made an end of slaying all the inhabitants of Ai in the field in the wilderness wherein they chased them and when they were all ●aln on the edge of the sword until they were consumed that all the Israelites returned unto Ai and smote it with the edge of the sword 25 And so it was that all that fell that day both of men and women were twelve thousand even all the men of Ai. 26 For Joshua drew not his hand back wherewith he stretched out the spear until he had utterly destroyed all the inhabitants of Ai. 27 * Num. 31.22.26 Onely the cattel and the spoil of that city Israel took for a prey unto themselves according unto the word of the LORD which he * Vers 2. commanded Joshua 28 And Joshua burnt Ai and made it an heap for ever even a desolation unto this day 29 And the king of Ai he hanged on a tree until even-tide and assoon as the sun was down Joshua commanded that they should take his carcase down from the tree and cast it at the entring of the gate of the city and * Chap. 7.26 raise thereon a great heap of stones that remaineth unto this day 30 ¶ Then Joshua built an altar unto the LORD God of Israel in mount Ebal 31 As Moses the servant of the LORD commanded the children of Israel as it is written in the * Exod. 20.25 Deut. 27.5 book of the law of Moses an altar of whole stones over which no man
hath lift up any iron and they offered thereon burnt-offerings unto the LORD and sacrificed peace-offerings 32 And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel 33 And all Israel and their elders and officers and their judges stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD as well the stranger as he that was born among them half of them over against mount Gerizim and half of them over against mount Ebal * Deut 11.29 27.12 as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before that they should bless the people of Israel 34 And afterward he read all the words of the law the blessings and cursings according to all that is written in the book of the law 35 There was not a word of all that Moses commanded which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel * Deut. 31.12 with the women and the little ones and the strangers that † Heb. walked were conversant among them CHAP. IX 1 The kings combine against Israel 3 The Gibeonites by craft obtain a league 16 for which they are condemned to perpetual bondage ANd it came to pass when all the kings which were on this side Jordan in the hills and in the valleys and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon the Hittite and the Amorite the Canaanite the Perizzite the Hivite and the Jebusite heard thereof 2 That they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua and with Israel with one † Heb. mouth accord 3 ¶ And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai 4 They did work wilily and went and made as if they had been embassadours and took old sacks upon their asses and wine ●ottles old and rent and bound up 5 And old shoes and clouted upon their feet and old garments upon them and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy 6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal and said unto him and to the men of Israel We be come from a far countrey now therefore make ye a league with us 7 And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites Peradventure ye dwell among us and how shall we make a league with you 8 And they said unto Joshua We are thy servants And Joshua said unto them Who are ye and from whence come ye 9 And they said unto him From a very far countrey thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God for we have heard the fame of him and all that he did in Egypt 10 And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond Jordan to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan which was at Ashtaroth 11 Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our countrey spake to us saying Take victuals † Heb. in your 〈◊〉 with you for the journey and go to meet them and say unto them We are your servants therefore now make ye a league with us 12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you but now behold it is dry and it is mouldy 13 And these bottles of wine which we filled were new and behold they be rent and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey 14 And ‖ Or ther re●ei●●● the men b● reason of their victuals the men took of their victuals and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD 15 And Joshua made peace with them and made a league with them to let them live and the princes of the congregation sware unto them 16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them that they heard that they were their neighbours and that they dwelt among them 17 And the children of Israel journeyed and came unto their cities on the third day now their cities were Gibeon and Chephirah and Beeroth and Kirjath-jearim 18 And the children of Israel smote them not because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto chem by the LORD God of Israel and all the congregation murmured against the princes 19 But all the princes said unto all the congregation We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel now therefore we may not touch them 20 This we will do to them we will even let them live lest wrath be upon us because of the oath which we sware unto them 21 And the princes said unto them Let them live but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation as the princes had * Vers 15. promised them 22 ¶ And Joshua called for them and he spake unto them saying Wherefore have ye beguiled us saying We are very far from you when ye dwell among us 23 Now therefore ye are cursed and there shall † Heb. not be cut off from you none of you be freed from being bond-men and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God 24 And they answered Joshua and said Because it was certainly told thy servants how that the LORD thy God * Deu. 7.1 2. commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you and have done this thing 25 And now behold we are in thine hand as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us do 26 And so did he unto them and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel that they slew them not 27 And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD even unto this day in the place which he should choose CHAP. X. 1 Five kings war against Gibeon 6 Joshua rescueth it 10 God fighteth against them with b●l-stones 12 The sun and moon stand still at the word of Joshua 16 The five kings are mured in a cave 22 They are brought forth 24 scornfully used 26 and banged 28 Seven kings more are conquered 43 Joshua returneth to Gilgal NOw it came to pass when Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem had heard how Joshua had taken Ai and had utterly destroyed it * Ch. 6.15 as he had done to Jericho and her king so he had done to * Ch. 8.3 Ai and her king and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them 2 That they feared greatly because Gibeon was a great city as one of the † Heb. cities of the kingdom royal cities and because it was greater then Ai and all the men thereof were mighty 3 Wherefore Adoni-zedek king
the king that the Jews which came up from thee to us are come unto Jerusalem building the rebellious and the bad city and have ‖ Or finished set up the walls thereof and † Cald. sowed together joyned the foundations 13 Be it known now unto the king that it this city be builded and the walls set up again then will they not † Cald. ●●e pay toll tribute and custom and so thou shalt endamage the ‖ Or strength revenue of the kings 14 Now because † Cald. We are salted with the s●lt of the palace we have maintenance from the kings palace and it was not meet for us to see the kings dishonour therefore have we sent and certified the king 15 That search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers so shalt thou finde in the book of the records and know that this city is a rebellious city and hurtful unto kings and provinces and that they have † Cald. made moved sedition † Cald. in the midst thereof within the same of old time for which cause was this city destroyed 16 We certifie the king that if this city be builded again and the walls thereof set up by this means thou shalt have no portion on this side the river 17 ¶ Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the chancellour and to Shimshai the scribe and to the rest of their † Cald. societies companions that dwell in Samaria and unto the rest beyond the river Peace and at such a time 18 The letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me 19 And † Cald. by me a decree is set I commanded and search hath been made and it is found that this city of old time hath † Cald. lifted up it self made insurrection against kings and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein 20 There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem which have ruled over all countreys beyond the river and full tribute and custom was paid unto them 21 † Cald. ma●e a decree Give ye now commandment to cause these men to cease and that this city be not builded until another commandment shall be given from me 22 Take heed now that ye sail not to do this why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings 23 ¶ Now when the copy of king Artaxerxes letter was read before Rehum and Shimshai the scribe and their companions they went up in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews and made them to cease † Cald. by arm and power by force and power 24 Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem So it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia CHAP. V. 1 Zerubbabel and Jeshua incited by Haggai and Zechariah set forward the building of the temple 3 Tatnai and Shethar-boznai could not hinder the Jews 6 Their letter to Darius against the Jews THen the prophets * Hag. 1.1 Haggai the prophet and * Zech. 1.1 Zechariah the son of Iddo prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel even unto them 2 Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem and with them were the prophets of God helping them 3 ¶ At the same time came to them Tatnai governour on this side the river and Shethar-boznai and their companions and said thus unto them Who hath commanded you to build this house and to make up this wall 4 Then said we unto them after this manner What are the names of the men † Cald. that build this building that make this building 5 Bu● the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews that they could not cause them to cease t●ll the matter came to Darius and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter 6 ¶ The copy of the letter that Tatnai governour on this side the river and Shethar-boznai and his companions the Apharsachites which were on this side the river sent unto Darius the king 7 They sent a letter unto him † Cald. in the midst whereof wherein was written thus Unto Darius the king all peace 8 Be it known unto the king that we went into the Province of Judea to the house of the great God which is builded with † Cald. stones of rolling great stones and timber is laid in the walls and this work goeth fast on and prospereth in their hands 9 Then asked we those elders and said unto them thus Who commanded you to build this house and to make up these walls 10 We asked their names also to certifie thee that we might write the names of the men that were the chief of them 11 And thus they returned us answer saying We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth and build the house that was builded these many years ago which a great king of Israel builded * 1 King 6.1 and set up 12 But after that our fathers had provoked the God of heaven unto wrath he gave them into the hand of * 2 King 24.2 25.8 Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon the Caldean who destroyed this house and carryed the people away into Babylon 13 But in the first year of * Chap. 1.1 Cyrus the king of Babylon the same king Cyrus made a decree to build this house of God 14 And * Chap. 1.7 8. 6.5 the vessels also of gold and silver of the house of God which Nebuchadnezzar took out of the temple that was in Jerusalem and brought them into the temple of Babylon those did Cyrus the king take out of the temple of Babylon and they were delivered unto one whose name was Sheshbazzar whom he had made ‖ Or deputy governour 15 And said unto him Take these vessels go carry them into the temple that is in Jerusalem and let the house of God be builded in his place 16 Then came the same Sheshbazzar and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem And since that time even until now hath it been in building and yet it is not finished 17 Now therefore if it seem good to the king let there be search made in the kings treasure-house which is there at Babylon whether it be so that a decree was made of Cyrus the king to build this house of God at Jerusalem and let the king send his pleasure to us concerning this matter CHAP. VI. 1 Darius finding the decree of Cyrus maketh a new decree for the advancement of the building 13 By the help of the enemies and the directions of the prophets the temple is finished 16 The feast of the dedication is kept 19 and the pass-over THen Darius the king made a decree and search was made in the house of the † Cald. books rolls
where the treasures were † Cald. made to descend laid up in Babylon 2 And there was found at ‖ Or Echatana or in a coffer Achmetha in the palace that is in the province of the Medes a roll and therein was a record thus written 3 In the first year of Cyrus the king the same Cyrus the king made a decree concerning the house of God at Jerusalem Let the house be builded the place where they offered sacrifices and let the foundations thereof be strongly laid the height thereof threescore cubits and the breadth thereof threescore cubits 4 With three rows of great stones and a row of new timber and let the expences be given out of the kings house 5 And also let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God which Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which is at Jerusalem and brought unto Babylon be restored and † Cald. go brought again unto the temple which is at Jerusalem every one to his place and place them in the house of God 6 Now therefore Tatnai governour beyond the river Shethar-boznai and † Cald. their societies your companions the Apharsachites which are beyond the river be ye far from thence 7 Let the work of this house of God alone let the governour of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in his place 8 Moreover † Cald. by me a decree is made I make a decree what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God that of the kings goods even of the tribute beyond the river forthwith expences be given unto these men that they be not † Cald. made to cease hindred 9 And that which they have need of both young bullocks and rams and lambs for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven wheat salt wine and oyl according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem let it be given them day by day without fail 10 That they may offer sacrifices † Cald. ●f rest of sweet savours unto the God of heaven and pray for the life of the king and of his sons 11 Also I have made a decree that whosoever shall alter this word let timber be pulled down from his house and being set up † Cald. let him be destroyed let him be hanged thereon and let his house be made a dunghil for this 12 And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people that shall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem I Darius have made a decree let it be done with speed 13 ¶ Then Tatnai governour on this side the river Shethar-boznai and their companions according to that which Darius the king had sent so they did speedily 14 And the elders of the Jews builded and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo and they builded and finished it according to the commandment of the God of Israel and according to the † Cald. ●●●ree commandment of Cyrus and Darius and Artaxerxes king of Persia 15 And this house was finished on the third day of the moneth Adar which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king 16 ¶ And the children of Israel the priests and the Levites and the rest of † Cald. the sons of the transportation the children of the captivity kept the dedication of this house of God with joy 17 And offered at the dedication of this house of God an hundred bullocks two hundred rams four hundred lambs and for a sin-offering for all Israel twelve he-goats according to the number of the tribes of Israel 18 And they set the priests in their divisions and the Levites in their courses for the service of God which is at Jerusalem † Cald. according to the writ●n● * R●m 3.6 ● 9 as it is written in the book of Moles 19 And the children of the captivity kept the pass-over upon the fourteenth day of the first moneth 20 For the priests and the Levites were purified together all of them were pure and killed the pass-over for all the children of the captivity and for their brethren the priests and for themselves 21 And the children of Israel which were come again out of captivity and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the filthiness of the heathen of the land to seek the LORD God of Israel did eat 22 And kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy for the LORD had made them joyful and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God the God of Israel CHAP. VII 1 Ezra goeth up to Jerusalem 11 The gracious commission of Artaxerxes to Ezra 27 Ezra blesseth God for his savour NOw after these things in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia Ezra the son of Seraiah the son of Azariah the son of Hilkiah 2 The son of Shallum the son of Zadok the son of Ahitub 3 The son of Amariah the son of Azariah the son of Meraioth 4 The son of Zerahiah the son of Uzzi the son of Bukki 5 The son of Abishua the son of Phinehas the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the chief priest 6 This Ezra went up from Babylon and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses which the LORD God of Israel had given and the king granted him all his request according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him 7 And there went up some of the children of Israel and of the priests and the Levites and the singers and the porters and the Nethinims unto Jerusalem in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king 8 And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth moneth which was in the seventh year of the king 9 For upon the first day of the first moneth † Heb. was the foundation of the going up began he to go up from Babylon and on the first day of the fifth moneth came he to Jerusalem according to the good hand of his God upon him 10 For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD and to do it and to teach in Israel statutes and judgements 11 ¶ Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest the scribe even a scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD and of his statutes to Israel 12 Artaxerxes king of kings ‖ Or To Ezra the priest a perfect scribe of the law of the God of heaven peace c. Unto Ezra the priest a scribe of the law of the God of heaven perfect peace and at such a time 13 I make a decree that all they of the people of Israel and of his priests and Levites in my realm which are minded of their own
