mine eyes 9 But hast done evil above all that were before thee for thou hast gone and made thee other gods and molten images to provoke me to anger and hast cast me behinde thy back 10 Therefore behold * Ch. 15.29 I will bring evil upon the house of Jeroboam and will cut off from Jeroboam * Ch. 21.21 2 Kin. 9.8 him that pisseth against the wall and him that is shut up and left in Israel and up a king over Israel who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam that day but what even now 15 For the LORD shall smite Israel as a reed is shaken in the water and he shall root up Israel out of this good land which he gave to their fathers and shall scatter them beyond the river because they have made their groves provoking the LORD to anger 16 And he shall give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam who did sin and who made Israel to sin 17 ¶ And Jeroboams wife arose and departed and came to Tirzah and when she came to the threshold of the door the childe died 18 And they buried him and all Israel mourned for him according to the word of the LORD which he spake by the hand of his servant Ahijah the prophet 19 And the rest of the acts of Jeroboam how he warred and how he reigned his son reigned in his stead 21 ¶ And Rehoboam the son of Solomon reigned in Judah * 2 Chr. 12.13 Rehoboam was fourty and one years old when he began to reign and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem the city which the LORD did choose out of all the tribes of Israel to put his name there and his mothers name was Naamah an Ammonitess 22 And Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD and they provoked him to jealousie with their sins which they had committed above all that their fathers had done 23 For they also built them high places and ‖ Or standing images or statues images and groves on every high hill and under every green tree 24 And there were also sodomites in the land and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel 25 ¶ And it came to pass in the fifth year of king Rehoboam that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem 26 And he took away the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the battel I will disguise my self and enter into the battel but put thou on thy robes And the king of Israel disguised himself and went into the battel 31 But the king of Syria commanded his thirty and two captains that had rule over his chariots saying Fight neither with small nor great save onely with the king of Israel 32 And it came to pass when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat that they said Surely it is the king of Israel And they turned aside to fight against him and Jehoshaphat cried out 33 And it came to pass when the captains of the chariots perceived that it was not 42 Jehoshaphat was thirty and five years old when he began to reign and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi 43 And he walked in all the way of Asa his father he turned not aside from it doing that which was right in the eyes of the LORD nevertheless the high places were not taken away for the people offered and burnt incense yet in Jehoshaphat ‖ Or had ten ships made ships of Tharshish to go to Ophir for gold but they went not for the ships were broken at Ezion-geber 49 Then said Ahaziah the son of Ahab unto Jehoshaphat Let my servants go with thy servants in the ships but Jehoshaphat would not 50 ¶ And Jehoshaphat slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father and Jehoram his son reigned in his stead 51 ¶ Ahaziah the son of Ahab began to reign over Israel in Samaria the seventeenth year of Jehoshaphat king of Judah and reigned two years over Israel 52 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD and walked in the way of his father and in the way of his mother and in the way of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin 53 For he served Baal and worshipped him and provoked to anger the LORD God of Israel according to all that his father had done ¶ The second book of the KINGS commonly called The fourth book of the KINGS CHAP. I. 1 Moab rebelleth 2 Ahaziah sending to Baal-zebub hath his judgement by Elijah 5 Elijah twice bringeth fire from heaven upon them whom Abaziah sent to apprehend him 13 He pitieth the third captain and encouraged by an angel telleth the king of his death 17 Jehoram succeedeth Ahaziah THen Moab rebelled against Israel * Chap. 3.5 after the death of Ahab 2 And Ahaziah fell down through a lattess in his upper chamber that was in Samaria and was sick and he sent messengers and said unto them Go enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron whether I shall recover of this disease 3 But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite Arise go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and say unto them Is it not because there is not a God in Israel that ye go to enquire of Baal-zebub the god of Ekron 4 Now therefore thus saith the LORD † Heb. The bed whither thou art goen up thou shalt not come down from it Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up but shalt surely die And Elijah departed 5 ¶ And when the messengers turned back unto him he said unto them
he began to reign and reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem 3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD yet not like David his father he did according to all things as Joash his father did 4 Howbeit the high places were not taken away as yet the people did sacrifice and burnt incense on the high places 5 ¶ And it came to pass assoon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand that he slew his servants * Chap. 12.20 which had slain the king his father 6 But the children of the murderers he slew not according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses wherein the LORD commanded saying * Deut. 24.16 Ezek. 18.20 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children nor the children be put to death for the fathers but every man shall be put to death for his own sin 7 He slew of Edom in the valley of salt ten thousand and took ‖ Ot the rock Selah by war and called the name of it Joktheel unto this day 8 ¶ Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu king of Israel saying Come let us look one another in the face 9 And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah saying The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon saying Give thy daughter to my son to wife and there passed by a wilde beast that was in Lebanon and trod down the thistle 10 Thou hast indeed smitten Edom and thine heart hath listed thee up glory of this and tarry † Heb. at thy house at home for why shouldest thou meddle to thy hurt that thou shouldest fall even thou and Judah with thee 11 But Amaziah would not hear therefore Jehoash king of Israel went up and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth-shemesh which belongeth to Judah 12 And Judah † Heb. was smitten was put to the worse before Israel and they fled every man to their tents 13 And Jehoash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah the son of Jehoash the son of Ahaziah at Beth-shemesh and came to Jerusalem and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner-gate four hundred cubits 14 And he took all the gold and silver and all the vessels that were found in the house of the LORD and in the treasures of the kings house and hostages and returned to Samaria 15 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash which he did and his might and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 16 And Jehoash slept with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel and Jeroboam his son reigned in his stead 17 ¶ And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years 18 And the rest of the acts of Amaziah are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 19 Now * 2 Chr 25.27 they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem and he fled to Lachish but they sent after him to Lachish and slew him there 20 And they brought him on horses and he was buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David 21 ¶ And all the people of Judah took † 2 Chr. 26.1 he i● called Vzziah Azariah which ●●as sixteen years old and made him king in stead of his father Amaziah 22 He built Elath and restored it to Judah after that the king slept with his fathers 23 ¶ In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel began to reign in Samaria and reigned fourty and one years 24 And he did that which was evil in the fight of the LORD he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin 25 He restored the coast of Israel from the entring of Hamath unto the sea of the plain according to the word of the LORD God of Israel which he spake by the hand of his servant * Mat. 12.39 40 called Jonas Jonan the son of Amittai the prophet which was of Gath-hepher 26 For the LORD saw the affliction of Israel that it was very bitter for there was not any shut up nor any lest nor any helper for Israel 27 And the LORD said not that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash 28 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam and all that he did and his might how he warred and how he recovered Damascus and Hamath which belonged to Judah for Israel are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 29 And Jeroboam slept with his fathers even with the kings of Israel and Zachariah his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XV. 1 Azariah his good reign 5 He dying a leper Jotham succeedeth 8 Zachariah the last of Jehu his generation reigning ill is slain by Shallum 13 Shallum reigning a moneth is slain by Menahem 16 Menahem strengthneth himself by Pul. 21 Pekahiah succeedeth him 23 Pekahiah is slain by Pekah 27 Pekah is oppressed by Tiglath-pileser and slain by Hoshea 32 Jothams good reign 36 Ahaz succeedeth him IN the twenty and seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel began Azariah son of Amaziah king of Judah to reign 2 Sixteen years old was he when he began to reign and he reigned two and fifty years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jecholiah of Jerusalem 3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD according to all that his father Amaziah had done 4 Save that the high places were not removed the people sacrificed and burnt incense still on the high places 5 ¶ And the LORD smote the king so that he was a leper unto the day of his death and dwelt in a several house and Jotham the kings son was over the house judging the people of the land 6 And the rest of the acts of Azariah and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 7 So Azariah slept with his fathers and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David and Jotham his son reigned in his stead 8 ¶ In the thirty and eighth year of Azariah king of Judah did Zachariah the son of Jeroboam reign over Israel in Samaria six moneths 9 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD as his fathers had done he departed not from the fins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat Who made Israel to sin 10 And Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired

XXII 1 Josiah his good reign 3 He taketh care for the repair of the temple 8 Hilkiab having found a book of the law Josiah sendeth to Husdah to enquire of the Lord. 15 Huldah prophesi●th the destruction of Jerusalem but respite thereof in Josiahs time JOsiah * 2 Chr. 34.1 was eight years old when he began to reign and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath 2 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD and walked in all the way of David his father and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left 3 ¶ And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah that the king sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah the son of Meshullam the scribe to the house of the LORD saying 4 Go up to Hilkiah the high priest that he may sum the silver which is brought into the house of the LORD which the keepers of the † Heb. threshold door have gathered of the people 5 And let them deliver it into the hand of the doers of the work that have the oversight of the house of the LORD and let them give it to the doers of the work which is in the house of the LORD to repair the breaches of the house 6 Unto carpenters and builders and masons and to buy timber and hewn stone to repair the house 7 Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand because they dealt faithfully 8 ¶ And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD and Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan and he read it 9 And Shaphan the scribe came to the king and brought the king word again and said Thy servants have † Heb. ●●●ted gathered the money that was found in the house and have delivered it into the hand of them that do the work that have the oversight of the house of the LORD 10 And Shaphan the scribe shewed the king saying Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book and Shaphan read it before the king 11 And it came to pass when the king had heard the words of the book of the law that he rent his clothes 12 And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest and Ahikam the son of Shaphan and Achbor the son of Michaiah and Shaphan the scribe and Asahiah a servant of the kings saying 13 Go ye enquire of the LORD for me and for the people and for all Judah concerning the words of this book that is found for great is the wrath of the LORD that is kindled against us because our fathers have not hearkned unto the words of this book to do according unto all that which is written concerning us 14 So Hilkiah the priest and Ahikam and Achbor and Shaphan and Asahiah went unto Huldah the prophetess the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah the son of Harhas keeper of the † Heb. ●a●ments wardrobe now she dwelt in Jerusalem ‖ Or in the second put in the colledge and they communed with her 15 ¶ And she said unto them Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Tell the man that sent you to me 16 Thus saith the LORD Behold I will bring evil upon this place and upon the inhabitants thereof even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read 17 Because they have forsaken me and have burnt incense unto other gods that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands therefore my wrath shall be kindled against this place and shall not be quenched 18 But to the king of Judah which sent you to enquire of the LORD thus shall ye say to him Thus saith the LORD God of Israel As touching the words which thou hast heard 19 Because thine heart was tender and thou hast humbled thy self before the LORD when thou heardest what I spake against this place and against the inhabitants thereof that they should become a desolation and a curse and hast rent thy clothes and wept before me I also have heard thee saith the LORD 20 Behold therefore I will gather thee unto thy fathers and thou shalt be gathered into thy grave in peace and thine eyes shall not see all the evil which I will bring upon this place And they brought the king word again CHAP. XXIII 1 Josiah causeth the book to be read in a solemn assembly 3 He reneweth the covenant of the Lord. 4 He destroyeth idolatry 15 He burneth dead mens bones upon the altar of Beth-el as was fore-prophesied 21 He keepeth a most solemn pass-over 24 He putteth away witches and all abomination 26 Gods final wrath against Judah 29 Josiah provoking Pharaoh-nechoh is slain at Megiddo 31 Jehoahaz succeeding him is imprisoned by Pharaoh-nechoh who made Jehoiakim king 36 Jehoiakim his wicked reign ANd * 2 Chron. 34.30 the king sent and they gathered unto him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem 2 And the king went up into the house of the LORD and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him and the priests and the prophets and all the people † Heb. from small 〈◊〉 unto great both small and great and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD 3 ¶ And the king stood by a pillar and made a covenant before the LORD to walk after the LORD and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book and all the people stood to the covenant 4 And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest and the priests of the second order and the keepers of the door to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal and for the grove and for all the host of heaven and he burnt them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron and carried the ashes of them unto Beth-el 5 And he † Heb. ●●●sed to ●●ase put down the † Heb. ●●●mar●m idolatrous priests whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah and in the places round about Jerusalem them also that burnt incense unto Baal to the sun and to the moon and to the ‖ Or twelve sign● or constellations planets and to all the host of heaven 6 And he brought out the * Chap. 21. ● grove from the house of the LORD without Jerusalem unto the brook Kidron and burnt it at the brook Kidron and stampt it small to powder and cast the powder thereof upon the graves of the children of the people 7

XXIV 1 Jehoiakim first subdued by Nebuchadnezzar then rebelling against him procureth his own ruine 6 Jehoiachin succeedeth him 7 The king of Egypt is vanquished by the king of Babylon 8 Jehoiachin his evil reign 10 Jerusalem is taken and carried captive into Babylon 17 Zedekiah is made king and reigneth ill unto the utter destruction of Judah IN his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up Jehoiakim became his servant three years then he turned rebelled against him 2 And the LORD sent against him bands of the Caldees and bands of the Syrians and bands of the Moabites and bands of the children of Ammon and sent them against Judah to destroy it * Chap. 20.17 23.27 according to the word of the LORD which he spake † Heb. by the hand of by his servants the prophets 3 Surely at the commandment of the LORD came this upon Judah to remove them out of his sight for the sins of Manasseh according to all that he did 4 And also for the innocent bloud that he shed for he filled Jerusalem with innocent bloud which the LORD would not pardon 5 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 6 So Jehoiakim slept with his fathers and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead 7 And the king of Egypt came not again any more out of his land for the king of Babylon had taken from the river of Egypt unto the river Euphrates all that pertained to the king of Egypt 8 ¶ Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign and he reigned in Jerusalem three moneths and his mothers name was Nehushta the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem 9 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD according to all that his father had done 10 ¶ * Dan. 1.1 At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem and the city † Heb. came into siege was besieged 11 And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city and his servants did besiege it 12 And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon he and his mother and his servants and his princes and his ‖ Or. eunuchs officers and the king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign 13 * Chap. 20.17 Isa 39 6. And he carried out thence all the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the kings house and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold which Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the LORD as the LORD had said 14 And he carried away all Jerusalem and all the princes and all the mighty men of valour even ten thousand captives and all the crafts-men and smiths none remained save the poorest sort of the people of the land 15 And * 2 Chron. 36.10 Esth 2.6 he carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon and the kings mother and the kings wives and his ‖ Or eunuchs officers and the mighty of the land those carried he into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon 16 And all the men of might even seven thousand and crafts-men and smiths a thousand all that were strong and apt for war even them the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon 17 ¶ And * Jer. 37.1 the king of Babylon made Mattaniah his fathers brother king in his stead and changed his name to Zedekiah 18 * Jer. 52.1 Zedekiah was twenty and one years old when he began to reign and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah 19 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD according to all that Jehoiakim had done 20 For through the anger of the LORD it came to pass in Jerusalem and Judah until he had cast them out from his presence that Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon CHAP. XXV 1 Jerusalem is besieged 4 Zedekiah taken his sons slain his eyes put out 8 Nebuzar-adan defaceth the city carrieth the remnant except a jew poor labourers into captivity 13 spoileth and carrieth away the treasures 18 The nobles are slain at Biblab 22 Gedaliah who was set over them that remained being slain the rest flee into Egypt 27 Evil merodath advanceth Jehoiachin in his court ANd it came to pass * Jer. 39.1 and 52.4 in the ninth year of his reign in the tenth moneth in the tenth day of the moneth that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came he and all his host against Jerusalem and pitched against it and they built forts against it round about 2 And the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah 3 And on the ninth day of the * Jer. 52.6 fourth moneth the famine prevailed in the city and there was no bread for the people of the land 4 ¶ And the city was broken up and all the men of war fied by night by the way of the gate between two walls which is by the kings garden now the Caldees were against the city round about and the king went the way toward the plain 5 And the army of the Caldees pursued after the king and overtook him in the plains of Jericho and all his army were scattered from him 6 So they took the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon to Riblah and they † Heb. spake judgement with him gave judgement upon him 7 And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes and † Heb. made blind● put out the eyes of Zedckiah and bound him with fetters of brass and carried him to Babylon 8 ¶ And in the fifth moneth on the seventh day of the moneth which is the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came Nebuzar-adan ‖ Or chief marshal captain of the guard a servant of the king of Babylon unto Jerusalem 9 And he burnt the house of the LORD and the kings house and all the houses of Jerusalem and every great mans house burnt he with fire 10 And all the army of the Caldees that were with the captain of the guard brake down the walls of Jerusalem round about 11 Now the rest of the people that were left in the city and the † Heb. faln away fugitives that fell away to the king of Babylon with the remnant of the multitude did Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carry away 12 But the captain of the guard left of the poor of the land to be vine-dressers and husbandmen
¶ For in the eighth year of his reign while he was yet young he began to seek after the God of David his father and in the twelfth year he began * 1 Kin. 13.2 to purge Judah and Jerusalem from the high places and the groves and the carved images and the molten images 4 * Levit. 26.30 And they brake down the altars of Baalim in his presence and the ‖ Or su●-images images that were on high above them he cut down and the groves and the carved images and the molten images he brake in pieces and made dust of them and strowed it upon the † Heb. face of the graves graves of them that had sacrificed unto them 5 And he burnt the bones of the priests upon their altars and cleansed Judah and Jerusalem 6 And so did he in the cities of Manasseh and Ephraim and Simeon even unto Naphtali with their ‖ Or mauls mattocks round about 7 And when he had broken down the altars and the groves and had beaten the graven images † Heb. to make powder into powder and cut down all the idols throughout all the land of Israel he returned to Jerusalem 8 ¶ Now in the eighteenth year of his reign when he had purged the land and the house he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah and Maaseiah the governour of the city and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder to repair the house of the LORD his God 9 And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God which the Levites that kept the doors had gathered of the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim and of all the remnant of Israel and of all Judah and Benjamin and they returned to Jerusalem 10 And they put it in the hand of the workmen that had the oversight of the house of the LORD and they gave it to the workmen that wrought in the house of the LORD to repair and mend the house 11 Even to the artificers and builders gave they it to buy hewn ston● and timber for couplings and ‖ Or to rafter to floor the houses which the kings of Judah had destroyed 12 And the men did the work faithfully and the overseers of them were Jahath and Obadiah the Levites of the sons of Merari and Zechariah and Meshullam of the sons of the Kohathites to set it forward and other of the Levites all that could skill of instruments of mu●ick 13 Also they were over the bearers of burdens and were overseers of all that wrought the work in any manner of service and of the Levites there were scribes and officers and porters 14 ¶ And when they ●rought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD Hilkiah the priest * 2 Kin. 22.8 c. found a book of the law of the LORD given † Heb. by the hand of by Moses 15 And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan 15 And Shaphan carried the book to the king and brought the king word back again saying All that was committed † Heb. to the hand of to thy servants they do it 17 And they have † Heb. poured out or melted gathered together the money that was found in the house of the LORD and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers and to the hand of the workmen 18 Then Shaphan the scribe told the king saying Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book And Shaphan read † Heb. ●●it it before the king 19 And it came to pass when the king had heard the words of the law that he rent his clothes 20 And the king commanded Hilkiah and Ahikam the son of Shaphan and ‖ Or Athbor 2 King 2● 12 Abdon the son of Micah and Shaphan the scribe and Asaiah a servant of the kings saying 21 Go enquire of the LORD for me and for them that are left in Israel and in Judah concerning the words of the book that is found for great is the wrath of the LORD that is poured out upon us because our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD to do after all that is written in this book 22 And Hilkiah and they that the king had appointed went to Huldah the prophetess the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvath the son of ‖ Or H●rba● 2 King 22.14 Hasrah keeper of the † Heb. ●●●ments wardrobe now she dwelt in Jerusalem ‖ Or in the s●●●ol or in the second part in the colledge and they spake to her to that effect 23 ¶ And she answered them Thus saith the LORD God of Israel Tell ye the man that sent you to me 24 Thus saith the LORD Behold I will bring evil upon this place and upon the inhabitants thereof even all the curses that are written in the book which they have read before the king of Judah 25 Because they have forsaken me and have burned incense unto other gods that they might provoke me to anger with all the works of their hands therefore my wrath shall be poured out upon this place and shall not be quenched 26 And as for the king of Judah who sent you to enquire of the LORD so shall ye say unto him Thus saith the LORD God of Israel concerning the words which thou hast heard 27 Because thine heart was tend●r and thou didst humble thy self before God when thou heardest his words against this place and against the inhabitants thereof and humbledst thy self be●ore me and didst rend thy clothes and weep before me I have even heard thee also saith the LORD 28 Behold I will gather thee to thy fathers and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place and upon the inhabitants of the same So they brought the king word again 29 ¶ * 2 King 23.1 Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem 30 And the king went up into the house of the LORD and all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the priests and the Levites and all the people † Heb. som ●reat can to ●●ull great and small and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD 31 And the king stood in his place and made a covenant before the LORD to walk after the LORD and to keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all his heart and with all his soul to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book 32 And he caused all that were † Heb. ●●und present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God
the God of their fathers 33 And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countreys that pertained to the children of Israel and made all that were present in Israel to serve even to serve the LORD their God And all his days they departed not † Heb. from after from following the LORD the God of their fathers CHAP. XXXV 1 Josiah keepeth a most solemn pass-over 20 He provoking Pharaoh-necho is slain at Megiddo 25 Lamentations for Josiah MOreover * 2 King 23.21 22. Josiah kept a pass-over unto the LORD in Jerusalem and they killed the pass-over on the * Ex. 12.6 fourteenth day of the first moneth 2 And he set the priests in their charges and encouraged them to the service of the house of the LORD 3 And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel which were holy unto the LORD Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders serve now the LORD your God and his people Israel 4 And prepare your selves by the * 1 Chr. 9.10 houses of your fathers after your courses according to the * 1 Chr. 23. and 24. and 25. and 2● writing of David king of Israel and according to the * Chap. ● 14 writing of Solomon his son 5 And stand in the holy place according to the divisions of † Heb. the house of the fathers the families of the fathers of your brethren † Heb. the sons of the people the people and after the division of the families of the Levites 6 So kill the pass-over and sanctifie your selves and prepare your brethren that they may do according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses 7 And Josiah † Heb. ●ffered gave to the people of the flock lambs and kids all for the pass-over-offerings for all that were present to the number of thirty thousand and three thousand bullocks these were of the kings substance 8 And his princes † Heb. ●ffered gave willingly unto the people to the priests and to the Levites Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel rulers of the house of God gave unto the priests for the pass-over-offerings two thousand and six hundred small cattel and three hundred oxen 9 Conaniah also and Shemaiah and Nethaneel his brethren and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad chief of the Levites † Heb. ●ffered gave unto the Levites for pass over-offerings five thousand small cattel and five hundred oxen 10 So the service was prepared and the priests stood in their place and the Levites in their courses according to the kings commandment 11 And they killed the pass over and the priests sprinkled the bloud from their hands and the Levites * See chap. 29.34 fleyed them 12 And they removed the burnt offerings that they might give according to the divisions of the families of the people to offer unto the LORD as it is written in the book of Moses and so did they with the oxen 13 And they * Exod. 12.8 9. rosted the pass-over with fire according to the ordinance but the other holy offerings sod they in pots and in caldrons and in pans and † Heb. made them run divided them speedily among all the people 14 And afterward they made ready for themselves and for the priests because the priests the sons of Aaron were busied in offering of burnt offerings and the fat until night therefore the Levites prepared for themselves and for the priests the sons of Aaron 15 And the singers the sons of Asaph were in their † Heb. station place according to the * 1 Chr. 25.1 c. commandment of David and Asaph and H●man and Jeduthun the kings seer and the porters * 1 Chr. 9.17.18 and 26.14 c. waited at every gate they might not depart from their service for their brethren the Levites prepared for them 16 So all the service of the LORD was prepared the same day to keep the pass-over and to offer burnt-offerings upon the altar of the LORD according to the commandment of king Josiah 17 And the children of Israel that w●re † Heb. found present kept the pass-over at that time and the feast of unleavened bread seven days 18 And there was no pass-over like to that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a pass-over as Josiah kept and the priests and the Levites and all Judah and Israel that were present and the inhabitants of Jerusalem 19 In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah was this pass-over kept 20 ¶ * 2 Kin. 23.29 After all this when Josiah had prepared the † Heb. house temple Necho king of Egypt came up to fight against Carchemish by Euphrates and Josiah went out against him 21 But he sent embassadours to him saying What have I to do with thee thou king of Judah I come not against thee this day but against † Heb. the house of my war the house wherewith I have war for God commanded me to make haste forbear thee from medling with God who is with me that he destroy thee not 22 Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him but disguised himself that he might fight with him and hearkned not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo 23 And the archers shot at king Josiah and the king said to his servants Have me away for I am sore † Heb. made sick wounded 24 His servants therefore took him out of that chariot and put him in the second chariot that he had and they brought him to Jerusalem and he died and was buried ‖ Or among the the sepulchres in one of the sepulchres of his fathers and * Zech. 12.11 all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah 25 ¶ And Jeremiah lamented for Josiah and all the singing-men and the singing-women spake of Josiah in their lamentations to this day and made them an ordinance in Israel and behold they are written in the lamentations 26 Now the rest of the acts of Josiah and his † Heb. kindnesses goodness according to that which was written in the law of the LORD 27 And his deeds first and last behold they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah CHAP. XXXVI 1 Jehoahaz succeeding is deposed by Pharaoh and carried into Egypt 5 Jehoiakim reigning ill is carried bound into Babylon 9 Jehoiachin succeeding reigneth ill and is brought into Babylon 11 Zedekiah succeeding reigneth ill and despiseth the prophets and rebelleth against Nebuchadnezzar 14 Jerusalem for the sins of the priests and people is wholly destroyed 22 The proclamation of Cyrus THen * 2 Kin. 23.30 c. the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah and made him king in his fathers stead in Jerusalem 2
where the treasures were † Cald. made to descend laid up in Babylon 2 And there was found at ‖ Or Echatana or in a coffer Achmetha in the palace that is in the province of the Medes a roll and therein was a record thus written 3 In the first year of Cyrus the king the same Cyrus the king made a decree concerning the house of God at Jerusalem Let the house be builded the place where they offered sacrifices and let the foundations thereof be strongly laid the height thereof threescore cubits and the breadth thereof threescore cubits 4 With three rows of great stones and a row of new timber and let the expences be given out of the kings house 5 And also let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God which Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which is at Jerusalem and brought unto Babylon be restored and † Cald. go brought again unto the temple which is at Jerusalem every one to his place and place them in the house of God 6 Now therefore Tatnai governour beyond the river Shethar-boznai and † Cald. their societies your companions the Apharsachites which are beyond the river be ye far from thence 7 Let the work of this house of God alone let the governour of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in his place 8 Moreover † Cald. by me a decree is made I make a decree what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God that of the kings goods even of the tribute beyond the river forthwith expences be given unto these men that they be not † Cald. made to cease hindred 9 And that which they have need of both young bullocks and rams and lambs for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven wheat salt wine and oyl according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem let it be given them day by day without fail 10 That they may offer sacrifices † Cald. ●f rest of sweet savours unto the God of heaven and pray for the life of the king and of his sons 11 Also I have made a decree that whosoever shall alter this word let timber be pulled down from his house and being set up † Cald. let him be destroyed let him be hanged thereon and let his house be made a dunghil for this 12 And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people that shall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem I Darius have made a decree let it be done with speed 13 ¶ Then Tatnai governour on this side the river Shethar-boznai and their companions according to that which Darius the king had sent so they did speedily 14 And the elders of the Jews builded and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo and they builded and finished it according to the commandment of the God of Israel and according to the † Cald. ●●●ree commandment of Cyrus and Darius and Artaxerxes king of Persia 15 And this house was finished on the third day of the moneth Adar which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king 16 ¶ And the children of Israel the priests and the Levites and the rest of † Cald. the sons of the transportation the children of the captivity kept the dedication of this house of God with joy 17 And offered at the dedication of this house of God an hundred bullocks two hundred rams four hundred lambs and for a sin-offering for all Israel twelve he-goats according to the number of the tribes of Israel 18 And they set the priests in their divisions and the Levites in their courses for the service of God which is at Jerusalem † Cald. according to the writ●n● * R●m 3.6 ● 9 as it is written in the book of Moles 19 And the children of the captivity kept the pass-over upon the fourteenth day of the first moneth 20 For the priests and the Levites were purified together all of them were pure and killed the pass-over for all the children of the captivity and for their brethren the priests and for themselves 21 And the children of Israel which were come again out of captivity and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the filthiness of the heathen of the land to seek the LORD God of Israel did eat 22 And kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy for the LORD had made them joyful and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God the God of Israel CHAP. VII 1 Ezra goeth up to Jerusalem 11 The gracious commission of Artaxerxes to Ezra 27 Ezra blesseth God for his savour NOw after these things in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia Ezra the son of Seraiah the son of Azariah the son of Hilkiah 2 The son of Shallum the son of Zadok the son of Ahitub 3 The son of Amariah the son of Azariah the son of Meraioth 4 The son of Zerahiah the son of Uzzi the son of Bukki 5 The son of Abishua the son of Phinehas the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the chief priest 6 This Ezra went up from Babylon and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses which the LORD God of Israel had given and the king granted him all his request according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him 7 And there went up some of the children of Israel and of the priests and the Levites and the singers and the porters and the Nethinims unto Jerusalem in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king 8 And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth moneth which was in the seventh year of the king 9 For upon the first day of the first moneth † Heb. was the foundation of the going up began he to go up from Babylon and on the first day of the fifth moneth came he to Jerusalem according to the good hand of his God upon him 10 For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD and to do it and to teach in Israel statutes and judgements 11 ¶ Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest the scribe even a scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD and of his statutes to Israel 12 Artaxerxes king of kings ‖ Or To Ezra the priest a perfect scribe of the law of the God of heaven peace c. Unto Ezra the priest a scribe of the law of the God of heaven perfect peace and at such a time 13 I make a decree that all they of the people of Israel and of his priests and Levites in my realm which are minded of their own
wept very sore 2 And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel one of the sons of Elam answered and said unto Ezra We have trespassed against our God and have taken strange wives of the people of the land yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing 3 Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God † Heb. to bring forth● to put away all the wives and such as are born of them according to the counsel of my lord and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God and let it be done according to the law 4 Arise for this matter belong●th unto thee we also will be with thee be of good courage and do it 5 Then arose Ezra and made the chief priests the Levites and all Israel to swear that they should do according to this word And they sware 6 ¶ Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib and when he came thither he did eat no bread nor drink water for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away 7 And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem 8 And that whosoever would not come within three days according to the counsel of the princes and the elders all his substance should be † Heb. devoted forfeited and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away 9 ¶ Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days it was the ninth moneth and the twentieth day of the moneth and all the people sat in the street of the house of God trembling because of this matter and for † Heb. the showers the great rain 10 And Ezra the priest stood up and said unto them Ye have transgressed and † Heb. have caused to dwell or have brought back have taken strange wives to increase the trespass of Israel 11 Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers and do his pleasure and separate your selves from the people of the land and from the strange wives 12 Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice As thou hast said so must we do 13 But the people are many and it is a time of much rain and we are not able to stand without neither is this a work of one day or two for ‖ Or we have greatly offended in this thing we are many that have transgressed in this thing 14 Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times and with them the elders of every city and the judges thereof until the fierce wrath of our God ‖ Or till this matter ●e dispatched for this matter be turned from us 15 ¶ Onely Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah † Heb. stood were employed about this matter and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them 16 And the children of the captivity did so and Ezra the priest with certain chief of the fathers after the house of their fathers and all of them by their names were separated and sat down in the first day of the tenth moneth to examine the matter 17 And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first moneth 18 ¶ And among the sons of the priests there were found that had taken strange wives namely of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak and his brethren Maaseiah and Eliezer and Jarib and Gedaliah 19 And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives and being guilty they offered a ram of the flock for their trespass 20 And of the sons of Immer Hanani and Zebadiah 21 And of the sons of Harim Maaseiah and Elijah and Shemaiah and Jehiel and Uzziah 22 And of the sons of Pashur Elioenai Maaseiah Ishmael Nethaneel Jozabad and Elasah 23 Also of the Levites Jozabad and Shimei and Kelaiah the same is Kelita Pethahiah Judah and Eliezer 24 Of the singers also Eliashib and of the porters Shallum and Telem and Uri 25 Moreover of Israel of the sons of Parosh Ramiah and Jeziah and Malchiah and Miamin and Eleazar and Malchijah and Benaiah 26 And of the sons of Elam Mattaniah Zechariah and Jehiel and Abdi and Jeremoth and Eliah 27 And of the sons of Zattu Elioenai Eliashib XXV 1 Jeremiah reproving the Jews disobedience to the prophets 8 foretelleth the seventy years captivity 12 and after that the destruction of Babylon 15Vnder the type of a cup of wine be foresheweth the destruction of all nations 34 The howling of the shepherds THe word that came to Jeremiah concerning all the people of Judah in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah that was the first year of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon 2 The which Jeremiah the prophet spake unto all the people of Judah and to all the inhabitants of Jerusalem saying 3 From the thirteenth year of Josiah the son of Amon king of Judah even unto this day that is the three and twentieth year the word of the LORD hath come unto me and I have spoken unto you rising early and speaking but ye have not hearkned 4 And the LORD hath sent unto you all his servants the prophets * Ch. 29.19 rising early and sending them but ye have not hearkned nor inclined your ear to hear 5 They said * 2 Kin. 17.13 Ch. 18.11 and 35.15 Jon. 3.8 Turn ye again now every one from his evil way and from the evil of your doings and dwell in the land that the LORD hath given unto you and to your fathers for ever and ever 6 And go not after other gods to serve them and to worship them and provoke me not to anger with the works of your hands and I will do you no hurt 7 Yet ye have not hearkned unto me saith the LORD that ye might provoke me to anger with the works of your hands to your own hurt 8 ¶ Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts Because ye have not heard my words 9 Behold I will send and take all the families of the north saith the LORD and Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon my servant and will bring them against this land and against the inhabitants thereof and against all these nations round about and will utterly destroy them and make them an astonishment and an hissing and perpetual desolations 10 Moreover † Heb. I will cause to perish from them I will take from them the * G●l 7.34 and 16.9 Ezek. 26.13 Hos 2.11 voice of mirth and the voice of gladness the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride the sound of the milstones and the light of the candle 11 And this whole land shall be a desolation and an astonishment and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years 12 And it shall come to pass * 2 Chr. 36.21.22 Ezt. 1.1 Ch. 29.10 Dan. 9.2 when seventy years are accomplished that I will † Heb. visit upon punish the king of Babylon and that nation saith the LORD for their iniquity and the land of the Caldeans and will make it perpetual desolations 13 And I will bring upon that land all my words which I have pronounced against it even all that is written in this book which Jeremiah hath prophesied against all the nations 14 For many nations and great kings shall * Ch. 27.7 serve themselves of them also and I will recompense them according to their deeds and according to the works of their own hands 15 ¶ For thus saith the LORD God of Israel unto me Take the * Job 21.20 Ps 75.8 Is 51.17 wine-cup of this fury at my hand and cause all the nations to whom I send thee to drink it 16 And they shall drink and be moved and be mad because of the sword that I will send among them 17 Then took I the cup at the LORDS hand and made all the nations to drink unto whom the LORD had sent me 18 To wit Jerusalem and the cities of Judah and the kings thereof and the princes thereof to make them a desolation an astonishment an hissing and a curse as it is this day 19 Pharaoh king of Egypt and his servants and his princes and all his people 20 And all the mingled people and all the kings of the land of Uz and all the kings of the land of the Philistines and Ashkelon and Azzah and Ekron and the remnant of Ashdod 21 * Ch. 49.7 c. Moah and the children of * Ch. 49.1 Ammon 22 And all the kings of * Ch. 47.4 Tyrus and all the kings of Zidon and the kings of the ‖ Or region by the sea-side isles which are beyond the * Ch. 49.23 sea 23 * Ch. 49.28 Dedan and Tema and Buz and all † Heb. cut off into corners or having the corners of the hair polled Ch. 9.26 that are in the utmost corners 24 And all the kings of Arabia and all the kings of the * Ch. 49.31 mingled people that dwell in the desert 25 And all the kings of Zimri and all the kings of * Ch. 49.34 Elam and all the kings of the Medes 26 And all the kings of the north far and near one with another and all the kingdoms of the world which are upon the face of the earth and the king of Sheshach shall drink after them 27 Therefore thou shalt say unto them Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Drink ye and be drunken and spue and fall and rise no more because of the sword which I will send among you 28 And it shall be if they refuse to take the cup at thine hand to drink then shalt thou say unto them Thus saith the LORD of hosts Ye shall certainly drink 29 For lo I begin to bring evil on the * 1 Pet. 4.17 city † Heb. upon which my name is called which is called by my name and should ye be utterly unpunished ye shall not be unpunished for I will call for a sword
off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done saith the LORD 38 ¶ Behold the days come saith the LORD that the city shall be built to the LORD from the towre of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner 39 And the measuring-line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb and shall compass about to Goath 40 And the whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron unto the corner of the hors-gate towards the east shall be holy unto the LORD it shall not be plucked up nor thrown down any more for ever CHAP. XXXII 1 Jeremiah being imprisoned by Zedekiah for his prophesie 6 buyeth Hanameels field 13 Baruch must preserve the evidences as tokens of the peoples return 16 Jeremiah in his prayer complaineth to God 26 God confirmeth the captivity for their sins 36 and promiseth a gracious return THe word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar 2 For then the king of Babylons army besieged Jerusalem and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison which was in the king of Judahs house 3 For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up saying Wherefore dost thou prophesie and say Thus saith the LORD * Ch. 34.2 Behold I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon he shall take it 4 And Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Caldeans but shall surely * Chap. 34.3 be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon and shall speak with him mouth to mouth and his eyes shall behold his eyes 5 And he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon and there shall he be until I visit him saith the LORD though ye fight with the Caldeans ye shall not prosper 6 ¶ And Jeremiah said The word of the LORD came unto me saying 7 Behold Hanameel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee saying Buy thee my field that is in Anatho●h for the * Levit. 25.24 Ruth 4.4 right of redemption is thine to buy it 8 So Hanameel mine uncles son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD and said unto me Buy my field I pray thee that is in Anathoth which is in the countrey of Benjamin for the right of inheritance is thine and the redemption is thine buy it for thy self then I knew that this was the word of the LORD 9 And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncles son that was in Anathoth and weighed him the money even ‖ Or seven shekels and ten pieces of silver seventeen shekels of silver 10 And I † Heb. wrote in the book subscribed the evidence and sealed it and took witnesses and weighed him the money in the balances 11 So I took the evidence of the purchase both that which was sealed according to the law and custom and that which was open 12 And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah the son of Maaseiah in the sight of Hanameel mine uncles son and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison 13 ¶ And I charged Baruch before them saying 14 Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Take these evidences this evidence of the purchase both which is sealed and this evidence which is open and put them in an earthen vessel that they may continue many days 15 For thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land 16 ¶ Now when I had delivered the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah I prayed unto the LORD saying 17 Ah Lord GOD behold thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm and there is nothing ‖ Or hid from thee too hard for thee 18 Thou shewest * Exod. 34.7 Deut. 5.10 loving kindness unto thousands and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into the bosom of their children after them the great the mighty God the LORD of hosts is his name 19 Great in counsel and mighty in † Heb. doing work for thine * Job 34.21 Prov. 5.21 Chap. 16.17 eyes are open upon all the ways of the sons of men to give every one according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings 20 Which hast set signs and wonders in the land of Egypt even unto this day and in Israel and amongst other men and hast made thee a name as at this day 21 And hast brought forth thy people Israel * Exod. 6.6 2 Sam. 7.23 1 Chron. 17.21 out of the land of Egypt with signs and with wonders and with a strong hand and with a stretched out arm and with great terrour 22 And hast given them this land which thou didst swear to their fathers to give them a land flowing with milk and honey 23 And they came in and possessed it but they obeyed not thy voice neither walked in thy law they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them 24 Behold the ‖ Or engines of shot mounts they are come unto the city to take it and the city is given into the hand of the Caldeans that fight against it because of the sword and of the famine and of the pestilence and what thou hast spoken is come to pass and behold thou seest it 25 And thou hast said unto me O Lord GOD Buy thee the field for money and take witnesses for the city is given into the hand of the Caldeans 26 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah saying 27 Behold I am the LORD the * Numb 16.22 God of all flesh Is there any thing too hard for me 28 Therefore thus saith the LORD Behold I will give this city into the hand of the Caldeans and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and he shall take it 29 And the Caldeans that fight against this city shall come and set fire on this city and burn it with the houses * Chap. 19.13 upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal and poured out drink-offerings unto other gods to provoke me to anger 30 For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have onely done evil before me from their youth for the children of Israel have onely provoked me to anger with the work of their hands saith the LORD 31 For this city hath been to me as † Heb. for my anger a provocation of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day that I should remove it from before my face 32
of Judah saying 2 Go unto the house of the Rechabites and speak unto them and bring them into the house of the LORD into one of the chambers and give them wine to drink 3 Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah the son of Habaziniah and his brethren and all his sons the whole house of the Rechabites 4 And I brought them into the house of the LORD into the chamber of the sons of Hanan the son of Igdaliah a man of God which was by the chamber of the princes which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum the keeper of the † Heb. threshold or vesel door 5 And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine and cups and I said unto them Drink ye wine 6 But they said We will drink no wine for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us saying Ye shall drink no wine neither ye nor your sons for ever 7 Neither shall ye build house nor sowe seed nor plant vineyard nor have any but all your days ye shall dwell in tents that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers 8 Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us to drink no wine all our days we our wives our sons nor our daughters 9 Nor to build houses for us to dwell in neither have we vineyard nor field nor seed 10 But we have dwelt in tents and have obeyed and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us 11 But it came to pass when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land that we said Come and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Caldeans and for fear of the army of the Syrians so we dwell at Jerusalem 12 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah saying 13 Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem Will ye not receive instruction to hearken to my words saith the LORD 14 The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab that he commanded his sons not to drink wine are performed for unto this day they drink none but obey their fathers commandment notwithstanding I have spoken unto you rising early and speaking but ye hearkned not unto me 15 I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets rising up early and sending them saying * Chap. 18.11 25.5 Return ye now every man from his evil way and iniend your doings and go not after other gods to serve them and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers but ye have not inclined your ear nor hearkned unto me 16 Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father which he commanded them but this people hath not hearkned unto me 17 Therefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them because I have spoken unto them but they have not heard and I have called unto them but they have not answered 18 ¶ And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father and kept all his precepts and done according unto all that he hath commanded you 19 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel † Heb. There shall not a man be cut off from Jonedab the son of Rechab to stand c. Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever CHAP. XXXVI 1 Jeremiah causeth Barueh to write his prophesie 5 and publickly to read it 11 The princes having intelligence thereof by Michalab send Jedudi to fetch the roll and read it 19 They will Baruch to hide himself and Jeremiah 20 The king Jehoiakim being certified thereof heareth part of it and burneth the roll 27 Jeremiah denouneeth his judgement 32 Baruch writeth a new copy ANd it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah that this word came unto Jeremiah from the LORD saying 2 Take thee a roll of a book and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel and against Judah and against all the nations from the day I spake unto thee from the days of * Ch. 25.3 Josiah even unto this day 3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them that they may return every man from his evil way that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin 4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD which he had spoken unto him upon a roll of a book 5 And Jeremiah commanded Baruch saying I am shut up I cannot go into the house of the LORD 6 Therefore go thou and read in the roll which thou hast written from my mouth the words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORDS house upon the fasting-day and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities 7 It may be † Heb. their supplication shall sall they will present their supplication before the LORD and will return every one from his evil way for great is the anger and the fury that the LORD hath pronounced against this people 8 And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet cummanded him reading in the book the words of the LORD in the LORDs house 9 And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah in the ninth moneth that they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem 10 Then read Baruch in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe in the higher court at the ‖ Or door * Chap. 26.10 entry of the new gate of the LORDs house in the ears of all the people 11 ¶ When Michaiah the son of Gemariah the son Shaphan had heard out of the book all the words of the LORD 12 Then he went down into the kings house into the scribes chamber and lo all the princes sat there even Elishama the scribe and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah and Elnathan the son of Achbor and Gemariah the son of Shaphan and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah and all the princes 13 Then Michaiah declared unto them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read the book in

IV. 1 Gods judgement on the wicked 2 and his blessing on the good 4 He exhorteth to the study of the law 5 and telleth of Elijahs coming and office FOr behold the day cometh that shall burn as an oven and all the proud yea and all that do wickedly shall be stubble and the day that cometh shall burn them up saith the LORD of hosts that it shall leave them neither root nor branch 2 ¶ But unto you that fear my name shall the * Luk. 1.78 sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings and ye shall go forth and grow up as calves of the stall 3 And ye shall tread down the wicked for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this saith the LORD of hosts 4 ¶ Remember ye the * Exod. 20.3 law of Moses my servant which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel with the statutes and judgements 5 ¶ Behold I will send you * Mat. 11.14 Mar. 9.11 Luk. 1.17 Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD 6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children and the heart of the children to their fathers lest I come and smite the earth with a curse The end of the Prophets APOCRYPHA I. ESDRAS CHAP. I. 1 Josias his charge to the priests and Levites 7 A great pass-over is kept 32 His death is much lamented 34 His successours 53 The temple eity and people are destroyed 56 Therest are carried unto Babylon ANd Josias held the * 2 Kings 23.21 2 Chr. 35.1 feast of the pass-over in Jerusalem unto his Lord and offered the pass-over the fourteenth day of the first moneth 2 Having set the priests according to their daily courses being arayed in long garments in the temple of the Lord. 3 And he spake unto the Levites the holy ministers of Israel that they should hallow themselves unto the Lord to set the holy ark of the Lord in the house that king Solomon the son of David had built 4 And said Ye shall no more bear the ark upon your shoulders now therefore serve the Lord your God and minister unto his people Israel and prepare you after your families and kindreds 5 According as David the king of Israel prescribed and according to the magnificence of Solomon his son and standing in the temple according to the several dignity of the families of you the Levites who minister in the presence of your brethren the children of Israel 6 Offer the pass-over in order and make ready the sacrifices for your brethren and keep the pass-over according to the commandment of the Lord which was given unto Moses 7 And unto the people that was found there Josias gave thirty thousand lambs and kids and three thousand calves these things were given of the kings allowance according as he promised to the people to the priests and to the Levites 8 And Helkias Zacharias and ‖ Or J●●i●l Syelus the governours of the temple gave to the priests for the pass-over two thousand and six hundred sheep and three hundred calves 9 And Jeconias and Samaias and Nathanael his brother and Assabias and Ochiel and Joram captains over thousands gave to the Levites for the pass-over five thousand sheep and ‖ Or f●●e hundred calves 2 Chr. 35.9 seven hundred calves 10 And when these things were done the priests and Levites having the unleavened bread stood in very comely order according to the kindreds 11 And according to the several dignities of the fathers before the people to offer to the Lord as it is written in the book of Moses * 2 Chr. 35.13 and so of the ●●●locks and thus did they in the morning 12 And they rosted the pass-over with fire as appertaineth as for the sacrifices they sod them in brass pots and pans ‖ Or with good s●●d or willingly 2 Chr. 35.13 with a good savour 13 And set them before all the people and afterward they prepared for themselves and for the priests their brethren the sons of Aaron 14 For the priests offered the fat until night and the Levites prepared for themselves and the priests their brethren the sons of Aaron 15 The holy singers also the sons of Asaph were in their order according to the appointment * 2. Chr. 35.15 of David and Asaph of David to wit Asaph Zacharias and Jeduthun who was * 2 Chr. 35.15 the kings st●● of the kings retinue 16 Moreover the porters were at every gate it was not lawful for any to go from his ordinary service for their brethren the Levites prepared for them 17 Thus were the things that belonged to the sacrifices of the Lord accomplished in that day that they might hold the pass-over 18 And offer sacrifices upon the altar of the LORD according to the commandment of king Josias 19 So the children of Israel which were present held the pass-over at that time and the feast of sweet bread seven days 20 And such a pass-over was not kept in Israel since the time of the prophet Samuel 21 Yea all the kings of Israel held not such a pass-over as Josias and the priests and the Levites and the Jews held with all Israel that were found dwelling at Jerusalem 22 In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josias was this pass-over kept 23 And the works of Josias were upright before his Lord with an heart full of godliness 24 As for the things that came to pass in his time they were written in former times concerning those

tabernacle which is called the holiest of all 4 Which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold wherein was * Ex. 16.34 the golden pot that had manna and * Num. 17.16 A●rons rod that budded and * Deut. 10.5 1 King 8.9 〈◊〉 Chr. 5.10 the tables of the covenant 5 And * Ex. 25.22 over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercy-seat of which we cannot now speak particularly 6 Now when these things were thus ordained the priests went always into the first tabernacle accomplishing the service of God 7 But into the second went the high priest alone * Ex. 30.10 ●ev 16. 〈◊〉 once every year not without bloud which he offered for himself and for the errours of the people 8 The holy Ghost this signifying that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest while as the first tabernacle was yet standing 9 Which was a sigure for the time then present in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices that could not make him that did the service perfect as pertaining to the conscience 10 Which stood onely in meats and drinks and divers washings and carnal ‖ Or vitor ceremonies ordinances imposed on them until the time of reformation 11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands that is to say not of this building 12 Neither by the bloud of goats and calves but by his own bloud he entred in once into the holy place having obtained eternal redemption f●r us 13 For it * Lev. 1● 14 the bloud of bulls and of goats and * 1 Num. 19.17 c. the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh 14 How much more shall the bloud of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without ‖ Or fault spot to God purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God 15 And for this cause he is the Mediatour of the new testament that by means of death for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance 16 For where a testament is there must also of necessity ‖ Or be brought in be the death of the testatour 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead otherwise it is of no strength at all whilest the testatour liveth 18 Whereupon neither the first testament was ‖ Or purified dedicated without bloud 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law he took the bloud of calves and of goats with water and ‖ Or purple scarlet wooll and hyssop and sprinkled both the book and all the people 20 Saying * E● 24.8 This is the bloud of the testament which God hath enjoyned unto you 21 Moreover he sprinkled likewise with bloud both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministery 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with bloud and without shedding of bloud is no remission 23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices then these 24 For Christ is not entred into the holy places made with hands which are the figures of the true but into heaven it self now * 1 Joh. 2.1 to appear in the presence of God for us 25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often as the high priest entreth into the holy place every year with bloud of others 26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die but after this the judgement 28 So * 1 Pet. 3.18 Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation CHAP. X. 1 The weakness of the law-sacrifices 10 The sacrifice of Christs body once offered 14 for ever hath taken away sins 19 An exhortation to hold fast the faith with patience and thanksgiving FOr the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of the things can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year 4 For it is not possible that the bloud of bulls and of goats should take away sins 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world he saith * Psal 10.6 c. Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not but a body ‖ Or thou ●●st fitted me hast thou prepared me 6 In burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure 7 Then said I Lo I come In the volume of the book it is written of me to do thy will O God 8 Above when he said Sacrifice and offering and barnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not neither hadst pleasure therein which are offered by the law 9 Then said he Lo I come to do thy will O God He taketh away the first that he may establish the second 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all 11 And every priest standeth daily ministring and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices which can never take away sins 12 But this man after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever sat down on the right hand of God 13 From henceforth expecting * Psal 11● 1. 1 Cor. 15.25 Chap. 1.13 till his enemies be made his footstool 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified 15 Whereof the holy Ghost also is a witness to us for after that he had said before 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days saith the Lord I will * Jer. 31.33 put my laws into their hearts and in their minds will I write them 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more 18 Now where remission of these is there is no more offering for sin 19 Having therefore brethren ‖ Or liberty boldness to enter into the holiest by the bloud of Jesus 20 By a new and living way which he hath ‖ Or new m●d● consecrated for us through the vail that is to say his flesh 21 And having an high priest over the house of God 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and
