IX 1 The kings combine against Israel 3 The Gibeonites by craft obtain a league 16 for which they are condemned to perpetual bondage ANd it came to pass when all the kings which were on this side Jordan in the hills and in the valleys and in all the coasts of the great sea over against Lebanon the Hittite and the Amorite the Canaanite the Perizzite the Hivite and the Jebusite heard thereof 2 That they gathered themselves together to fight with Joshua and with Israel with one †Heb. mouth accord 3 ¶ And when the inhabitants of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done unto Jericho and to Ai 4 They did work wilily and went and made as if they had been embassadours and took old sacks upon their asses and wine â—ottles old and rent and bound up 5 And old shoes and clouted upon their feet and old garments upon them and all the bread of their provision was dry and mouldy 6 And they went to Joshua unto the camp at Gilgal and said unto him and to the men of Israel We be come from a far countrey now therefore make ye a league with us 7 And the men of Israel said unto the Hivites Peradventure ye dwell among us and how shall we make a league with you 8 And they said unto Joshua We are thy servants And Joshua said unto them Who are ye and from whence come ye 9 And they said unto him From a very far countrey thy servants are come because of the name of the LORD thy God for we have heard the fame of him and all that he did in Egypt 10 And all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond Jordan to Sihon king of Heshbon and to Og king of Bashan which was at Ashtaroth 11 Wherefore our elders and all the inhabitants of our countrey spake to us saying Take victuals †Heb. in your 〈◊〉 with you for the journey and go to meet them and say unto them We are your servants therefore now make ye a league with us 12 This our bread we took hot for our provision out of our houses on the day we came forth to go unto you but now behold it is dry and it is mouldy 13 And these bottles of wine which we filled were new and behold they be rent and these our garments and our shoes are become old by reason of the very long journey 14 And ‖ Or ther reâ—eiâ—â—â— the men bâ— reason of their victuals the men took of their victuals and asked not counsel at the mouth of the LORD 15 And Joshua made peace with them and made a league with them to let them live and the princes of the congregation sware unto them 16 And it came to pass at the end of three days after they had made a league with them that they heard that they were their neighbours and that they dwelt among them 17 And the children of Israel journeyed and came unto their cities on the third day now their cities were Gibeon and Chephirah and Beeroth and Kirjath-jearim 18 And the children of Israel smote them not because the princes of the congregation had sworn unto chem by the LORD God of Israel and all the congregation murmured against the princes 19 But all the princes said unto all the congregation We have sworn unto them by the LORD God of Israel now therefore we may not touch them 20 This we will do to them we will even let them live lest wrath be upon us because of the oath which we sware unto them 21 And the princes said unto them Let them live but let them be hewers of wood and drawers of water unto all the congregation as the princes had * Vers 15. promised them 22 ¶ And Joshua called for them and he spake unto them saying Wherefore have ye beguiled us saying We are very far from you when ye dwell among us 23 Now therefore ye are cursed and there shall †Heb. not be cut off from you none of you be freed from being bond-men and hewers of wood and drawers of water for the house of my God 24 And they answered Joshua and said Because it was certainly told thy servants how that the LORD thy God * Deu. 7.1 2. commanded his servant Moses to give you all the land and to destroy all the inhabitants of the land from before you therefore we were sore afraid of our lives because of you and have done this thing 25 And now behold we are in thine hand as it seemeth good and right unto thee to do unto us do 26 And so did he unto them and delivered them out of the hand of the children of Israel that they slew them not 27 And Joshua made them that day hewers of wood and drawers of water for the congregation and for the altar of the LORD even unto this day in the place which he should choose CHAP. and bury him for he onely of Jeroboam shall come to the grave because in him there is sound some good thing toward the LORD God of Israel in the house of Jeroboam 14 Moreover the LORD shall raise him up a king over Israel who shall cut off the house of Jeroboam that day but what even now 15 For the LORD shall smite Israel as a reed is shaken in the water and he shall root up Israel out of this good land which he gave to their fathers and shall scatter them beyond the river because they have made their groves provoking the LORD to anger 16 And he shall give Israel up because of the sins of Jeroboam who did sin and who made Israel to sin 17 ¶ And Jeroboams wife arose and departed and came to Tirzah and when she came to the threshold of the door the childe died 18 And they buried him and provoked him to jealousie with their sins which they had committed above all that their fathers had done 23 For they also built them high places and ‖ Or standing images or statues images and groves on every high hill and under every green tree 24 And there were also sodomites in the land and they did according to all the abominations of the nations which the LORD cast out before the children of Israel 25 ¶ And it came to pass in the fifth year of king Rehoboam that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem 26 And he took away the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of battel I will disguise my self and enter into the battel but put thou on thy robes And the king of Israel disguised himself and went into the battel 31 But the king of Syria commanded his thirty and two captains that had rule over his chariots saying Fight neither with small nor great save onely with the king of Israel 32 And it came to pass when the captains of the chariots saw Jehoshaphat that they said Surely it is the king of Israel And they turned aside to fight against him and Jehoshaphat cried out 33 And it came to pass when the captains of the chariots perceived that it was not the five years old when he began to reign and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi 43 And he walked in all the way of Asa his father he turned not aside from it doing that which was right in the eyes of the LORD nevertheless the high places were not taken away for the people offered and burnt incense yet in the high places 44 And The bed whither thou art goen up thou shalt not come down from it Thou shalt not come down from that bed on which thou art gone up but shalt surely die And Elijah departed 5 ¶ And when the messengers turned back unto him he said unto them
he began to reign and reigned twenty and nine years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem 3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD yet not like David his father he did according to all things as Joash his father did 4 Howbeit the high places were not taken away as yet the people did sacrifice and burnt incense on the high places 5 ¶ And it came to pass assoon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand that he slew his servants * Chap. 12.20 which had slain the king his father 6 But the children of the murderers he slew not according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses wherein the LORD commanded saying * Deut. 24.16 Ezek. 18.20 The fathers shall not be put to death for the children nor the children be put to death for the fathers but every man shall be put to death for his own sin 7 He slew of Edom in the valley of salt ten thousand and took ‖ Ot the rock Selah by war and called the name of it Joktheel unto this day 8 ¶ Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz son of Jehu king of Israel saying Come let us look one another in the face 9 And Jehoash the king of Israel sent to Amaziah king of Judah saying The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon saying Give thy daughter to my son to wife and there passed by a wilde beast that was in Lebanon and trod down the thistle 10 Thou hast indeed smitten Edom and thine heart hath listed thee up glory of this and tarry †Heb. at thy house at home for why shouldest thou meddle to thy hurt that thou shouldest fall even thou and Judah with thee 11 But Amaziah would not hear therefore Jehoash king of Israel went up and he and Amaziah king of Judah looked one another in the face at Beth-shemesh which belongeth to Judah 12 And Judah †Heb. was smitten was put to the worse before Israel and they fled every man to their tents 13 And Jehoash king of Israel took Amaziah king of Judah the son of Jehoash the son of Ahaziah at Beth-shemesh and came to Jerusalem and brake down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner-gate four hundred cubits 14 And he took all the gold and silver and all the vessels that were found in the house of the LORD and in the treasures of the kings house and hostages and returned to Samaria 15 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash which he did and his might and how he fought with Amaziah king of Judah are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 16 And Jehoash slept with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel and Jeroboam his son reigned in his stead 17 ¶ And Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah lived after the death of Jehoash son of Jehoahaz king of Israel fifteen years 18 And the rest of the acts of Amaziah are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 19 Now * 2 Chr 25.27 they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem and he fled to Lachish but they sent after him to Lachish and slew him there 20 And they brought him on horses and he was buried at Jerusalem with his fathers in the city of David 21 ¶ And all the people of Judah took †2 Chr. 26.1 he iâ— called Vzziah Azariah which â—â—as sixteen years old and made him king in stead of his father Amaziah 22 He built Elath and restored it to Judah after that the king slept with his fathers 23 ¶ In the fifteenth year of Amaziah the son of Joash king of Judah Jeroboam the son of Joash king of Israel began to reign in Samaria and reigned fourty and one years 24 And he did that which was evil in the fight of the LORD he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin 25 He restored the coast of Israel from the entring of Hamath unto the sea of the plain according to the word of the LORD God of Israel which he spake by the hand of his servant * Mat. 12.39 40 called Jonas Jonan the son of Amittai the prophet which was of Gath-hepher 26 For the LORD saw the affliction of Israel that it was very bitter for there was not any shut up nor any lest nor any helper for Israel 27 And the LORD said not that he would blot out the name of Israel from under heaven but he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam the son of Joash 28 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jeroboam and all that he did and his might how he warred and how he recovered Damascus and Hamath which belonged to Judah for Israel are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 29 And Jeroboam slept with his fathers even with the kings of Israel and Zachariah his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XV. 1 Azariah his good reign 5 He dying a leper Jotham succeedeth 8 Zachariah the last of Jehu his generation reigning ill is slain by Shallum 13 Shallum reigning a moneth is slain by Menahem 16 Menahem strengthneth himself by Pul. 21 Pekahiah succeedeth him 23 Pekahiah is slain by Pekah 27 Pekah is oppressed by Tiglath-pileser and slain by Hoshea 32 Jothams good reign 36 Ahaz succeedeth him IN the twenty and seventh year of Jeroboam king of Israel began Azariah son of Amaziah king of Judah to reign 2 Sixteen years old was he when he began to reign and he reigned two and fifty years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jecholiah of Jerusalem 3 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD according to all that his father Amaziah had done 4 Save that the high places were not removed the people sacrificed and burnt incense still on the high places 5 ¶ And the LORD smote the king so that he was a leper unto the day of his death and dwelt in a several house and Jotham the kings son was over the house judging the people of the land 6 And the rest of the acts of Azariah and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 7 So Azariah slept with his fathers and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David and Jotham his son reigned in his stead 8 ¶ In the thirty and eighth year of Azariah king of Judah did Zachariah the son of Jeroboam reign over Israel in Samaria six moneths 9 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD as his fathers had done he departed not from the fins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat Who made Israel to sin 10 And Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired
against him and smote him before the people and slew him and reigned in his stead 11 And the rest of the acts of Zachariah behold they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 12 This was * Chap. 10.30 the word of the LORD which he spake unto Jehu saying Thy sons shall sit on the throne of Israel unto the fourth generation And so it came to pass 13 ¶ Shallum the son of Jabesh began to reign in the nine and thirtieth year of * Mat. 1.8 9 called Ozias Uzziah king of Judah and he reigned †Heb. a moneth of days a full moneth in Samaria 14 For Menahem the son of Gadi went up from Tirzah and came to Samaria and smote Shallum the son of Jabesh in Samaria and slew him and reigned in his stead 15 And the rest of the acts of Shallum and his conspiracy which he made behold they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 16 ¶ Then Menahem smote Tiphsah and all that were therein and the coasts thereof from Tirzah because they opened not to him therefore he smote it and all the women therein that were with childe he ript up 17 In the nine and thirtieth year of Azariah king of Judah began Menahem the son of Gadi to reign over Israel and reigned ten years in Samaria 18 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD he departed not all his days from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin 19 And * 1 Chr 5.26 Pul the king of Assyria came against the land and Menahem gave Pul a thousand talents of silver that his hand might be with him to confirm the kingdom in his hand 20 And Menahem †Heb. caused to come forth exacted the money of Israel even of all the mighty men of wealth of each man fifty shekels of silver to give to the king of Assyria so the king of Assyria turned back and stayed not there in the land 21 ¶ And the rest of the acts of Menahem and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 22 And Menahem slept with his fathers and Pekahiah his son reigned in his stead 23 ¶ In the fiftâ—eth year of Azariah king of Judah Pekahiah the son or Menahem began to reign over Israel in Samaria and reigned two years 24 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin 25 But Pekah the son of Remaliah a captain of his conspired against him and smote him in Samaria in the palace of the kings house with Argob and Arieh and with him fifty men of the Gileadites and the killed him and reigned in his room 26 And the rest of the act of Pekahiah and all that he did behold they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 27 ¶ In the two and fiftieth year of Azariah king of Judah Pekah the son of Remaliah began to reign over Israel in Samaria and reigned twenty years 28 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat who made Israel to sin 29 In the days of Pekah king of Israel came Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria and took ljon and Abel-beth-maachah and Janoah and Kedesh and Hazor and Gilead and Galilee all the land of Naphtali and carried them captive to Assyria 30 And Hoshea the son of Elah made a conspiracy against Pekah the son of Remaliah and smote him and slew him and reigned in his stead in the twentieth year of Jotham the son of Uzziah 31 And the rest of the acts of Pekah and all that he did behold they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel 32 ¶ In the second year of Pekah the son of Remaliah king of Israel began * 2 Chr. 27.1 Jotham the son of Uzziah king of Judah to reign 33 Five and twenty years old was he when he began to reign and he reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Jerusha the daughter of Zadok 34 And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD he did according to all that his father Uzziah had done 35 ¶ Howbeit the high places were not removed the people sacrificed and burnt incense still in the high places he built the higher gate of the house of the LORD 36 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jotham and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 37 In those days the LORD began to send against Judah Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah 38 And Jotham slept with his fathers and was buried with his fathers in the city of David his father and Ahaz his son reigned in his stead CHAP. XVI 1 Ahaz his wicked reign 5 Ahaz assailed by Rezin and Pekah hireth Tiglath-pileser against them 10 Ahaz sending a pattern of an altar from Damascus to Vrijah diverteth the brasen altar to his own devotion 17 He spoileth the temple 19 Hezekiah succeedeth him IN * 2 Chr. 28.1 the seventeenth year of Pekah the son of Remaliah Ahaz the son of Jotham king of Judah began to reign 2 Twenty years old was Ahaz when he began to reign and reigned sixteen years in Jerusalem and did not that which was right in the sight of the LORD his God like David his father 3 But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel yea and made his son to pass through the fire according to the abominations of the heathen whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel 4 And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places and on the hills and under every green tree 5 ¶ * Isaiah 7.1 Then Rezin king of Syria and Pekah son of Remaliah king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to war and they besieged Ahaz but could not overcome him 6 At that time Rezin king of Syria recovered Elath to Syria and drave the Jews from Elath and the Syrians came to Elath and dwelt there unto this day 7 So Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-pileser king of Assyria saying I am thy servant and thy son come up and save me out of the hand of the king of Syria and out of the hand of the king of Israel which rise up against me 8 And Ahaz took the silver and gold that was sound in the house of the LORD and in the treasures of the kings house and sent it for a present to the king of Assyria 9 And the king of Assyria hearkned unto him for the king of Assyria went up against †Heb. Dammeek Damascus and took it and carried the people of it captive to Kir and slew Rezin 10
taxation to give it unto Pharaoh-nechoh 36 ¶ Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem and his mothers name was Zebudah the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah 37 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD according to all that his fathers had done CHAP. XXIV 1 Jehoiakim first subdued by Nebuchadnezzar then rebelling against him procureth his own ruine 6 Jehoiachin succeedeth him 7 The king of Egypt is vanquished by the king of Babylon 8 Jehoiachin his evil reign 10 Jerusalem is taken and carried captive into Babylon 17 Zedekiah is made king and reigneth ill unto the utter destruction of Judah IN his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up Jehoiakim became his servant three years then he turned rebelled against him 2 And the LORD sent against him bands of the Caldees and bands of the Syrians and bands of the Moabites and bands of the children of Ammon and sent them against Judah to destroy it * Chap. 20.17 23.27 according to the word of the LORD which he spake †Heb. by the hand of by his servants the prophets 3 Surely at the commandment of the LORD came this upon Judah to remove them out of his sight for the sins of Manasseh according to all that he did 4 And also for the innocent bloud that he shed for he filled Jerusalem with innocent bloud which the LORD would not pardon 5 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim and all that he did are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah 6 So Jehoiakim slept with his fathers and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead 7 And the king of Egypt came not again any more out of his land for the king of Babylon had taken from the river of Egypt unto the river Euphrates all that pertained to the king of Egypt 8 ¶ Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign and he reigned in Jerusalem three moneths and his mothers name was Nehushta the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem 9 And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD according to all that his father had done 10 ¶ * Dan. 1.1 At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against Jerusalem and the city †Heb. came into siege was besieged 11 And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came against the city and his servants did besiege it 12 And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon he and his mother and his servants and his princes and his ‖ Or. eunuchs officers and the king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign 13 * Chap. 20.17 Isa 39 6. XXV 1 Jerusalem is besieged 4 Zedekiah taken his sons slain his eyes put out 8 Nebuzar-adan defaceth the city carrieth the remnant except a jew poor labourers into captivity 13 spoileth and carrieth away the treasures 18 The nobles are slain at Biblab 22 Gedaliah who was set over them that remained being slain the rest flee into Egypt 27 Evil merodath advanceth Jehoiachin in his court ANd it came to pass * Jer. 39.1 and 52.4 in the ninth year of his reign in the tenth moneth in the tenth day of the moneth that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came he and all his host against Jerusalem and pitched against it and they built forts against it round about 2 And the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah 3 And on the ninth day of the * Jer. 52.6 fourth moneth the famine prevailed in the city and there was no bread for the people of the land 4 ¶ And the city was broken up and all the men of war fied by night by the way of the gate between two walls which is by the kings garden now the Caldees were against the city round about and the king went the way toward the plain 5 And the army of the Caldees pursued after the king and overtook him in the plains of Jericho and all his army were scattered from him 6 So they took the king and brought him up to the king of Babylon to Riblah and they †Heb. spake judgement with him gave judgement upon him 7 And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes and †Heb. made blind◠put out the eyes of Zedckiah and bound him with fetters of brass and carried him to Babylon 8 ¶ And in the fifth moneth on the seventh day of the moneth which is the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came Nebuzar-adan ‖ Or chief marshal captain of the guard a servant of the king of Babylon unto Jerusalem 9 And he burnt the house of the LORD and the kings house and all the houses of Jerusalem and every great mans house burnt he with fire 10 And all the army of the Caldees that were with the captain of the guard brake down the walls of Jerusalem round about 11 Now the rest of the people that were left in the city and the †Heb. faln away fugitives that fell away to the king of Babylon with the remnant of the multitude did Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carry away 12 But the captain of the guard left of the poor of the land to be vine-dressers and husbandmen
the God of their fathers 33 And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countreys that pertained to the children of Israel and made all that were present in Israel to serve even to serve the LORD their God And all his days they departed not †Heb. from after from following the LORD the God of their fathers CHAP. XXXV 1 Josiah keepeth a most solemn pass-over 20 He provoking Pharaoh-necho is slain at Megiddo 25 Lamentations for Josiah MOreover * 2 King 23.21 22. Josiah kept a pass-over unto the LORD in Jerusalem and they killed the pass-over on the * Ex. 12.6 fourteenth day of the first moneth 2 And he set the priests in their charges and encouraged them to the service of the house of the LORD 3 And said unto the Levites that taught all Israel which were holy unto the LORD Put the holy ark in the house which Solomon the son of David king of Israel did build it shall not be a burden upon your shoulders serve now the LORD your God and his people Israel 4 And prepare your selves by the * 1 Chr. 9.10 houses of your fathers after your courses according to the * 1 Chr. 23. and 24. and 25. and 2â— writing of David king of Israel and according to the * Chap. â— 14 writing of Solomon his son 5 And stand in the holy place according to the divisions of †Heb. the house of the fathers the families of the fathers of your brethren †Heb. the sons of the people the people and after the division of the families of the Levites 6 So kill the pass-over and sanctifie your selves and prepare your brethren that they may do according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses 7 And Josiah †Heb. â—ffered gave to the people of the flock lambs and kids all for the pass-over-offerings for all that were present to the number of thirty thousand and three thousand bullocks these were of the kings substance 8 And his princes †Heb. â—ffered gave willingly unto the people to the priests and to the Levites Hilkiah and Zechariah and Jehiel rulers of the house of God gave unto the priests for the pass-over-offerings two thousand and six hundred small cattel and three hundred oxen 9 Conaniah also and Shemaiah and Nethaneel his brethren and Hashabiah and Jeiel and Jozabad chief of the Levites †Heb. â—ffered gave unto the Levites for pass over-offerings five thousand small cattel and five hundred oxen 10 So the service was prepared and the priests stood in their place and the Levites in their courses according to the kings commandment 11 And they killed the pass over and the priests sprinkled the bloud from their hands and the Levites * See chap. 29.34 fleyed them 12 And they removed the burnt offerings that they might give according to the divisions of the families of the people to offer unto the LORD as it is written in the book of Moses and so did they with the oxen 13 And they * Exod. 12.8 9. rosted the pass-over with fire according to the ordinance but the other holy offerings sod they in pots and in caldrons and in pans and †Heb. made them run divided them speedily among all the people 14 And afterward they made ready for themselves and for the priests because the priests the sons of Aaron were busied in offering of burnt offerings and the fat until night therefore the Levites prepared for themselves and for the priests the sons of Aaron 15 And the singers the sons of Asaph were in their †Heb. station place according to the * 1 Chr. 25.1 c. commandment of David and Asaph and Hâ—man and Jeduthun the kings seer and the porters * 1 Chr. 9.17.18 and 26.14 c. waited at every gate they might not depart from their service for their brethren the Levites prepared for them 16 So all the service of the LORD was prepared the same day to keep the pass-over and to offer burnt-offerings upon the altar of the LORD according to the commandment of king Josiah 17 And the children of Israel that wâ—re †Heb. found present kept the pass-over at that time and the feast of unleavened bread seven days 18 And there was no pass-over like to that kept in Israel from the days of Samuel the prophet neither did all the kings of Israel keep such a pass-over as Josiah kept and the priests and the Levites and all Judah and Israel that were present and the inhabitants of Jerusalem 19 In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josiah was this pass-over kept 20 ¶ * 2 Kin. 23.29 After all this when Josiah had prepared the †Heb. house temple Necho king of Egypt came up to fight against Carchemish by Euphrates and Josiah went out against him 21 But he sent embassadours to him saying What have I to do with thee thou king of Judah I come not against thee this day but against †Heb. the house of my war the house wherewith I have war for God commanded me to make haste forbear thee from medling with God who is with me that he destroy thee not 22 Nevertheless Josiah would not turn his face from him but disguised himself that he might fight with him and hearkned not unto the words of Necho from the mouth of God and came to fight in the valley of Megiddo 23 And the archers shot at king Josiah and the king said to his servants Have me away for I am sore †Heb. made sick wounded 24 His servants therefore took him out of that chariot and put him in the second chariot that he had and they brought him to Jerusalem and he died and was buried ‖ Or among the the sepulchres in one of the sepulchres of his fathers and * Zech. 12.11 all Judah and Jerusalem mourned for Josiah 25 ¶ And Jeremiah lamented for Josiah and all the singing-men and the singing-women spake of Josiah in their lamentations to this day and made them an ordinance in Israel and behold they are written in the lamentations 26 Now the rest of the acts of Josiah and his †Heb. kindnesses goodness according to that which was written in the law of the LORD 27 And his deeds first and last behold they are written in the book of the kings of Israel and Judah CHAP. XXXVI 1 Jehoahaz succeeding is deposed by Pharaoh and carried into Egypt 5 Jehoiakim reigning ill is carried bound into Babylon 9 Jehoiachin succeeding reigneth ill and is brought into Babylon 11 Zedekiah succeeding reigneth ill and despiseth the prophets and rebelleth against Nebuchadnezzar 14 Jerusalem for the sins of the priests and people is wholly destroyed 22 The proclamation of Cyrus THen * 2 Kin. 23.30 c. the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah and made him king in his fathers stead in Jerusalem 2
where the treasures were †Cald. made to descend laid up in Babylon 2 And there was found at ‖ Or Echatana or in a coffer Achmetha in the palace that is in the province of the Medes a roll and therein was a record thus written 3 In the first year of Cyrus the king the same Cyrus the king made a decree concerning the house of God at Jerusalem Let the house be builded the place where they offered sacrifices and let the foundations thereof be strongly laid the height thereof threescore cubits and the breadth thereof threescore cubits 4 With three rows of great stones and a row of new timber and let the expences be given out of the kings house 5 And also let the golden and silver vessels of the house of God which Nebuchadnezzar took forth out of the temple which is at Jerusalem and brought unto Babylon be restored and †Cald. go brought again unto the temple which is at Jerusalem every one to his place and place them in the house of God 6 Now therefore Tatnai governour beyond the river Shethar-boznai and †Cald. their societies your companions the Apharsachites which are beyond the river be ye far from thence 7 Let the work of this house of God alone let the governour of the Jews and the elders of the Jews build this house of God in his place 8 Moreover †Cald. by me a decree is made I make a decree what ye shall do to the elders of these Jews for the building of this house of God that of the kings goods even of the tribute beyond the river forthwith expences be given unto these men that they be not †Cald. made to cease hindred 9 And that which they have need of both young bullocks and rams and lambs for the burnt offerings of the God of heaven wheat salt wine and oyl according to the appointment of the priests which are at Jerusalem let it be given them day by day without fail 10 That they may offer sacrifices †Cald. â—f rest of sweet savours unto the God of heaven and pray for the life of the king and of his sons 11 Also I have made a decree that whosoever shall alter this word let timber be pulled down from his house and being set up †Cald. let him be destroyed let him be hanged thereon and let his house be made a dunghil for this 12 And the God that hath caused his name to dwell there destroy all kings and people that shall put to their hand to alter and to destroy this house of God which is at Jerusalem I Darius have made a decree let it be done with speed 13 ¶ Then Tatnai governour on this side the river Shethar-boznai and their companions according to that which Darius the king had sent so they did speedily 14 And the elders of the Jews builded and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo and they builded and finished it according to the commandment of the God of Israel and according to the †Cald. â—â—â—ree commandment of Cyrus and Darius and Artaxerxes king of Persia 15 And this house was finished on the third day of the moneth Adar which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king 16 ¶ And the children of Israel the priests and the Levites and the rest of †Cald. the sons of the transportation the children of the captivity kept the dedication of this house of God with joy 17 And offered at the dedication of this house of God an hundred bullocks two hundred rams four hundred lambs and for a sin-offering for all Israel twelve he-goats according to the number of the tribes of Israel 18 And they set the priests in their divisions and the Levites in their courses for the service of God which is at Jerusalem †Cald. according to the writâ—nâ— * Râ—m 3.6 â— 9 as it is written in the book of Moles 19 And the children of the captivity kept the pass-over upon the fourteenth day of the first moneth 20 For the priests and the Levites were purified together all of them were pure and killed the pass-over for all the children of the captivity and for their brethren the priests and for themselves 21 And the children of Israel which were come again out of captivity and all such as had separated themselves unto them from the filthiness of the heathen of the land to seek the LORD God of Israel did eat 22 And kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy for the LORD had made them joyful and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God the God of Israel CHAP. VII 1 Ezra goeth up to Jerusalem 11 The gracious commission of Artaxerxes to Ezra 27 Ezra blesseth God for his savour NOw after these things in the reign of Artaxerxes king of Persia Ezra the son of Seraiah the son of Azariah the son of Hilkiah 2 The son of Shallum the son of Zadok the son of Ahitub 3 The son of Amariah the son of Azariah the son of Meraioth 4 The son of Zerahiah the son of Uzzi the son of Bukki 5 The son of Abishua the son of Phinehas the son of Eleazar the son of Aaron the chief priest 6 This Ezra went up from Babylon and he was a ready scribe in the law of Moses which the LORD God of Israel had given and the king granted him all his request according to the hand of the LORD his God upon him 7 And there went up some of the children of Israel and of the priests and the Levites and the singers and the porters and the Nethinims unto Jerusalem in the seventh year of Artaxerxes the king 8 And he came to Jerusalem in the fifth moneth which was in the seventh year of the king 9 For upon the first day of the first moneth †Heb. was the foundation of the going up began he to go up from Babylon and on the first day of the fifth moneth came he to Jerusalem according to the good hand of his God upon him 10 For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the law of the LORD and to do it and to teach in Israel statutes and judgements 11 ¶ Now this is the copy of the letter that the king Artaxerxes gave unto Ezra the priest the scribe even a scribe of the words of the commandments of the LORD and of his statutes to Israel 12 Artaxerxes king of kings ‖ Or To Ezra the priest a perfect scribe of the law of the God of heaven peace c. Unto Ezra the priest a scribe of the law of the God of heaven perfect peace and at such a time 13 I make a decree that all they of the people of Israel and of his priests and Levites in my realm which are minded of their own
wept very sore 2 And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel one of the sons of Elam answered and said unto Ezra We have trespassed against our God and have taken strange wives of the people of the land yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing 3 Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God †Heb. to bring forthâ— to put away all the wives and such as are born of them according to the counsel of my lord and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God and let it be done according to the law 4 Arise for this matter belongâ—th unto thee we also will be with thee be of good courage and do it 5 Then arose Ezra and made the chief priests the Levites and all Israel to swear that they should do according to this word And they sware 6 ¶ Then Ezra rose up from before the house of God and went into the chamber of Johanan the son of Eliashib and when he came thither he did eat no bread nor drink water for he mourned because of the transgression of them that had been carried away 7 And they made proclamation throughout Judah and Jerusalem unto all the children of the captivity that they should gather themselves together unto Jerusalem 8 And that whosoever would not come within three days according to the counsel of the princes and the elders all his substance should be †Heb. devoted forfeited and himself separated from the congregation of those that had been carried away 9 ¶ Then all the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered themselves together unto Jerusalem within three days it was the ninth moneth and the twentieth day of the moneth and all the people sat in the street of the house of God trembling because of this matter and for †Heb. the showers the great rain 10 And Ezra the priest stood up and said unto them Ye have transgressed and †Heb. have caused to dwell or have brought back have taken strange wives to increase the trespass of Israel 11 Now therefore make confession unto the LORD God of your fathers and do his pleasure and separate your selves from the people of the land and from the strange wives 12 Then all the congregation answered and said with a loud voice As thou hast said so must we do 13 But the people are many and it is a time of much rain and we are not able to stand without neither is this a work of one day or two for ‖ Or we have greatly offended in this thing we are many that have transgressed in this thing 14 Let now our rulers of all the congregation stand and let all them which have taken strange wives in our cities come at appointed times and with them the elders of every city and the judges thereof until the fierce wrath of our God ‖ Or till this matter â—e dispatched for this matter be turned from us 15 ¶ Onely Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahaziah the son of Tikvah †Heb. stood were employed about this matter and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite helped them 16 And the children of the captivity did so and Ezra the priest with certain chief of the fathers after the house of their fathers and all of them by their names were separated and sat down in the first day of the tenth moneth to examine the matter 17 And they made an end with all the men that had taken strange wives by the first day of the first moneth 18 ¶ And among the sons of the priests there were found that had taken strange wives namely of the sons of Jeshua the son of Jozadak and his brethren Maaseiah and Eliezer and Jarib and Gedaliah 19 And they gave their hands that they would put away their wives and being guilty they offered a ram of the flock for their trespass 20 And of the sons of Immer Hanani and Zebadiah 21 And of the sons of Harim Maaseiah and Elijah and Shemaiah and Jehiel and Uzziah 22 And of the sons of Pashur Elioenai Maaseiah Ishmael Nethaneel Jozabad and Elasah 23 Also of the Levites Jozabad and Shimei and Kelaiah the same is Kelita Pethahiah Judah and Eliezer 24 Of the singers also Eliashib and of the porters Shallum and Telem and Uri 25 Moreover of Israel of the sons of Parosh Ramiah and Jeziah and Malchiah and I. 1 Nehemiah understanding by Hanani the miser of Jerusalem mourneth faâ—â—eth and prayeth 5 His prayer THe words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah And it came to pass in the moneth Chiâ—leâ— in the twentieth year as I was in Shushan the palace 2 That Hanani one of my brethren came he and certain men of Judah and I asked them concerning the Jews that had escaped which were left of the captivity and concerning Jerusalem 3 And they said unto me The remnant that are lest of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach the wall of Jerusalem also * 2 Kings 25.10 is broken down and the gates thereof are burnt with fire 4 ¶ And it came to pass when I heard these words that I set down and wept and mourned certain days and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven 5 And said I beseech thee * Daniel 9.4 O LORD God of heaven the great and terrible God that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments 6 Lâ—t taine ear now be attentive and thine eyes open that thou mayeâ—t hear the prayer of thy servant which I pray before thee now day and nighâ— for the children of Israel thy servants and confess the sins of the children of Israel which we have sinned againâ— thee both I. and my

Amon. 60 All the Nethinims and the children of Solomons servants were three hundred ninety and two 61 * Ezra 2.59 And these were they which went up also from Tel-melah Tel-haresha Cherub Addon and Immer but they could not shew their fathers house nor their ‖ Or â—edegree seed whether they were of Israel 62 The children of Delaiah the children of Tobiah the children of Nekoda six hundred fourty and two 63 ¶ And of the priests the children of Habaiah the children of Koz the children of Barzillai which took one of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite to wife and was called after their name 64 These sought their register among those that were reckoned by genealogie but it was not found therefore were they 〈◊〉 as polluted put from the priesthood 65 And Or the â—â—â—â—â—nour the Tirshatha said unto them that they should not eat of the most holy things till there stood up a priest with Urim and Thummim 66 ¶ The whole congregation together was fourty and two thousand three hundred and threescore 67 Beside their man-servants and their maid-servants of whom there were seven thousand three hundred thirty and seven and they had two hundred fourty and five singing-men and singing-women 68 Their horses seven hundred thirty and six their mules two hundred fourty and five 69 Their camels four hundred thirty and five six thousand seven hundred and twenty asses 70 ¶ And †Heb. part some of the chief of the fathers gave unto the work the Tirshatha gave to the treasure a thousand drams of gold fifty basons five hundred and thirty priests garments 71 And some of the chief of the fathers gave to the treasure of the work twenty thousand drams of gold and two thousand and two hundred pound of silver 72 And that which the rest of the people gave was twenty thousand drams of gold and two thousand pound of silver and threescore and seven priests garments 73 So the priests and the Levites and the porters and the singers and some of the people and the Nethinims and all Israel dwelt in their cities and when the seventh moneth came the children of Israel were in their cities CHAP. VIII 1 The religious manner of reading and hearing the law 9 They comfort the people 13 The forwardness of them to hear and be insirusted 16 They keep the feast of tabernacles ANd all * Ezra 3.1 the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water-gate and they spake unto Ezra the * Ezra 7.6 scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses which the LORD had commanded to Israel 2 And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women and all †Heb. that understood in hearing that could hear with understanding upon the first day of the seventh moneth 3 And he read therein before the street that was before the water-gate †Heb. from the light from the morning until mid-day before the men and the women and those that could understand and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law 4 And Ezra the scribe stood upon a †Heb. tower of wood pulpit of wood which they had made for the purpose and beside him stood Mattithiah and Shema and Anaiah and Urijah and Hilkiah and Maaseiah on his right hand and on his left hand Pedaiah and Mishael and Malchiah and Hashum and Hashbadana Zechariah and Meshullam 5 And Ezra opened the book in the †Heb. eyes sight of all the people for he was above all the people and when he opened it all the people stood up 6 And Ezra blessed the LORD the great God and all the people answered Amen amen with lifting up their hands and they bowed their heads and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground 7 Also Jeshua and Bani and Sherebiah Jamin Akkub Shabbethai Hodijah Maaseiah Kelita Azariah Jozabad Hanan Pelaiah and the Levites caused the people to understand the law and the people stood in their place 8 So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly and gave the sense and caused them to understand the reading 9 ¶ And Nehemiah which is ‖ Or the governouâ— the Tirshatha and Ezra the priest the scribe and the Levites that taught the people said unto all the people This day is holy unto the LORD your God mourn not nor weep for all the people wept when they heard the words of the law 10 Then he said unto them Go your way eat the fat and drink the sweet and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared for this day is holy unto our Lord neither be you sorry for the joy of the LORD is your strength 11 So the Levites stilled all the people saying Hold your peace for the day is holy neither be ye grieved 12 And all the people went their way to eat and to drink and to send portions and to make great mirth because they had understood the words that were declared unto them 13 ¶ And on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people the priests and the Levites unto Ezra the scribe even ‖ Or that they might instruct in the words of the law to understand the words of the law 14 And they found written in the law which the LORD had commanded †Heb. by the hand of by Moses that the children of Israel should dwell in * Levit. 23.34 Deut. 16.13 booths in the feast of the seventh moneth 15 And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities and in Jerusalem saying Go forth unto the mount and fetch olive-branches and pine-branches and myrtle branches and palm-branches and branches of thick trees to make booths as it is written 16 ¶ So
off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done saith the LORD 38 ¶ Behold the days come saith the LORD that the city shall be built to the LORD from the towre of Hananeel unto the gate of the corner 39 And the measuring-line shall yet go forth over against it upon the hill Gareb and shall compass about to Goath 40 And the whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes and all the fields unto the brook of Kidron unto the corner of the hors-gate towards the east shall be holy unto the LORD it shall not be plucked up nor thrown down any more for ever CHAP. XXXII 1 Jeremiah being imprisoned by Zedekiah for his prophesie 6 buyeth Hanameels field 13 Baruch must preserve the evidences as tokens of the peoples return 16 Jeremiah in his prayer complaineth to God 26 God confirmeth the captivity for their sins 36 and promiseth a gracious return THe word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the tenth year of Zedekiah king of Judah which was the eighteenth year of Nebuchadrezzar 2 For then the king of Babylons army besieged Jerusalem and Jeremiah the prophet was shut up in the court of the prison which was in the king of Judahs house 3 For Zedekiah king of Judah had shut him up saying Wherefore dost thou prophesie and say Thus saith the LORD * Ch. 34.2 Behold I will give this city into the hand of the king of Babylon he shall take it 4 And Zedekiah king of Judah shall not escape out of the hand of the Caldeans but shall surely * Chap. 34.3 be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon and shall speak with him mouth to mouth and his eyes shall behold his eyes 5 And he shall lead Zedekiah to Babylon and there shall he be until I visit him saith the LORD though ye fight with the Caldeans ye shall not prosper 6 ¶ And Jeremiah said The word of the LORD came unto me saying 7 Behold Hanameel the son of Shallum thine uncle shall come unto thee saying Buy thee my field that is in Anathoâ—h for the * Levit. 25.24 Ruth 4.4 right of redemption is thine to buy it 8 So Hanameel mine uncles son came to me in the court of the prison according to the word of the LORD and said unto me Buy my field I pray thee that is in Anathoth which is in the countrey of Benjamin for the right of inheritance is thine and the redemption is thine buy it for thy self then I knew that this was the word of the LORD 9 And I bought the field of Hanameel my uncles son that was in Anathoth and weighed him the money even ‖ Or seven shekels and ten pieces of silver seventeen shekels of silver 10 And I †Heb. wrote in the book subscribed the evidence and sealed it and took witnesses and weighed him the money in the balances 11 So I took the evidence of the purchase both that which was sealed according to the law and custom and that which was open 12 And I gave the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah the son of Maaseiah in the sight of Hanameel mine uncles son and in the presence of the witnesses that subscribed the book of the purchase before all the Jews that sat in the court of the prison 13 ¶ And I charged Baruch before them saying 14 Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Take these evidences this evidence of the purchase both which is sealed and this evidence which is open and put them in an earthen vessel that they may continue many days 15 For thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land 16 ¶ Now when I had delivered the evidence of the purchase unto Baruch the son of Neriah I prayed unto the LORD saying 17 Ah Lord GOD behold thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm and there is nothing ‖ Or hid from thee too hard for thee 18 Thou shewest * Exod. 34.7 Deut. 5.10 loving kindness unto 7.23 1 Chron. 17.21 out of the land of Egypt with signs and with wonders and with a strong hand and with a stretched out arm and with great terrour 22 And hast given them this land which thou didst swear to their fathers to give them a land flowing with milk and honey 23 And they came in and possessed it but they obeyed not thy voice neither walked in thy law they have done nothing of all that thou commandedst them to do therefore thou hast caused all this evil to come upon them 24 Behold the ‖ Or engines of shot mounts they are come unto the city to take it and the city is given into the hand of the Caldeans that fight against it because of the sword and of the famine and of the pestilence and what thou hast spoken is come to pass and behold thou seest it 25 And thou hast said unto me O Lord GOD Buy thee the field for money and take witnesses for the city is given into the hand of the Caldeans 26 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah saying 27 Behold I am the LORD the * Numb 16.22 God of all flesh Is there any thing too hard for me 28 Therefore thus saith the LORD Behold I will give this city into the hand of the Caldeans and into the hand of Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon and he shall take it 29 And the Caldeans that fight against this city shall come and set fire on this city and burn it with the houses * Chap. 19.13 upon whose roofs they have offered incense unto Baal and poured out drink-offerings unto other gods to provoke me to anger 30 For the children of Israel and the children of Judah have onely done evil before me from their youth for the children of Israel have onely provoked me to anger with the work of their hands saith the LORD 31 For this city hath been to me as †Heb. for my anger a provocation of mine anger and of my fury from the day that they built it even unto this day that I should remove it from before my face 32
of Judah saying 2 Go unto the house of the Rechabites and speak unto them and bring them into the house of the LORD into one of the chambers and give them wine to drink 3 Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah the son of Habaziniah and his brethren and all his sons the whole house of the Rechabites 4 And I brought them into the house of the LORD into the chamber of the sons of Hanan the son of Igdaliah a man of God which was by the chamber of the princes which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum the keeper of the †Heb. threshold or vesel door 5 And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine and cups and I said unto them Drink ye wine 6 But they said We will drink no wine for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us saying Ye shall drink no wine neither ye nor your sons for ever 7 Neither shall ye build house nor sowe seed nor plant vineyard nor have any but all your days ye shall dwell in tents that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers 8 Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us to drink no wine all our days we our wives our sons nor our daughters 9 Nor to build houses for us to dwell in neither have we vineyard nor field nor seed 10 But we have dwelt in tents and have obeyed and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us 11 But it came to pass when Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon came up into the land that we said Come and let us go to Jerusalem for fear of the army of the Caldeans and for fear of the army of the Syrians so we dwell at Jerusalem 12 ¶ Then came the word of the LORD unto Jeremiah saying 13 Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Go and tell the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem Will ye not receive instruction to hearken to my words saith the LORD 14 The words of Jonadab the son of Rechab that he commanded his sons not to drink wine are performed for unto this day they drink none but obey their fathers commandment notwithstanding I have spoken unto you rising early and speaking but ye hearkned not unto me 15 I have sent also unto you all my servants the prophets rising up early and sending them saying * Chap. 18.11 25.5 Return ye now every man from his evil way and iniend your doings and go not after other gods to serve them and ye shall dwell in the land which I have given to you and to your fathers but ye have not inclined your ear nor hearkned unto me 16 Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father which he commanded them but this people hath not hearkned unto me 17 Therefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts the God of Israel Behold I will bring upon Judah and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the evil that I have pronounced against them because I have spoken unto them but they have not heard and I have called unto them but they have not answered 18 ¶ And Jeremiah said unto the house of the Rechabites Thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel Because ye have obeyed the commandment of Jonadab your father and kept all his precepts and done according unto all that he hath commanded you 19 Therefore thus saith the LORD of hosts the God of Israel †Heb. There shall not a man be cut off from Jonedab the son of Rechab to stand c. Jonadab the son of Rechab shall not want a man to stand before me for ever CHAP. XXXVI 1 Jeremiah causeth Barueh to write his prophesie 5 and publickly to read it 11 The princes having intelligence thereof by Michalab send Jedudi to fetch the roll and read it 19 They will Baruch to hide himself and Jeremiah 20 The king Jehoiakim being certified thereof heareth part of it and burneth the roll 27 Jeremiah denouneeth his judgement 32 Baruch writeth a new copy ANd it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah that this word came unto Jeremiah from the LORD saying 2 Take thee a roll of a book and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel and against Judah and against all the nations from the day I spake unto thee from the days of * Ch. 25.3 Josiah even unto this day 3 It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them that they may return every man from his evil way that I may forgive their iniquity and their sin 4 Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD which he had spoken unto him upon a roll of a book 5 And Jeremiah commanded Baruch saying I am shut up I cannot go into the house of the LORD 6 Therefore go thou and read in the roll which thou hast written from my mouth the words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORDS house upon the fasting-day and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities 7 It may be †Heb. their supplication shall sall they will present their supplication before the LORD and will return every one from his evil way for great is the anger and the fury that the LORD hath pronounced against this people 8 And Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet cummanded him reading in the book the words of the LORD in the LORDs house 9 And it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah in the ninth moneth that they proclaimed a fast before the LORD to all the people in Jerusalem and to all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem 10 Then read Baruch in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe in the higher court at the ‖ Or door * Chap. 26.10 entry of the new gate of the LORDs house in the ears of all the people 11 ¶ When Michaiah the son of Gemariah the son Shaphan had heard out of the book all the words of the LORD 12 Then he went down into the kings house into the scribes chamber and lo all the princes sat there even Elishama the scribe and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah and Elnathan the son of Achbor and Gemariah the son of Shaphan and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah and all the princes 13 Then Michaiah declared unto them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read the book in
likeness and their appearance and their work was as it were a wheel in the middle of a wheel 17 When they went they went upon their four sides and they returned not when they went 18 As for their rings they were so high that they were dreadful and their ‖ Or strakes rings were full of eyes round about them four 19 And when the living creatures went the wheels went by them and when the living creatures were lift up from the earth the wheels were lift up 20 Whithersoever the spirit was to go they went thither was their spirit to go and the wheels were lifted up over against them for the spirit ‖ Or of life of the living creature was in the wheels 21 When those went these went and when those stood these stood and when those were lifted up from the earth the wheels were lifted up over against them for the spirit ‖ Or of â—ifâ— of the living creature was in the wheels 22 And the likeness of the firmament upon the heads of the living creature was as the colour of the terrible crystal stretched forth over their heads above 23 And under the firmament were their wings strait the one toward the other every one had two which covered on this side and every one had two which covered on that side their bodies 24 And when they went I heard the noise of their wings like the noise of great waters as the voice of the Almighty the voice of speech as the noise of an host when they stood they let down their wings 25 And there was a voice from the firmament that was over their heads when they stood and had let down their wings 26 ¶ And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne as the appearance of a sapphire-stone and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it 27 And I saw as the colour of amber as the appearance of fire round about within it from the appearance of his loyns even upward and from the appearance of his loyns even downward I saw as it were the appearance of fire and it had brightness round about 28 As the appearance of the bowe that is in the cloud in the day of rain so was the appearance of the brightness round about This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD and when I saw it I fell upon my face and I heard a voice of one that spake CHAP. II. 1 Ezekiels commission 6 His instruction 9 The roll of his heavy prophesie ANd he said unto me Son of man stand upon thy feet and I will speak unto thee 2 And the spirit entred into me when he spake unto me and set me upon my feet that I heard him that spake unto me 3 And he said unto me Son of man I send thee to the children of Israel to a rebellious †Heb. nations nation that hath rebelled against me they and their fathers have transgressed against me even unto this very day 4 For they are †Heb. hard of faâ—e impudent children and stiff-hearted I do send thee unto them and thou shalt say unto them Thus saith the Lord GOD. 5 And they whether they will hear or whether they will forbear for they are a rebellious house yet shall know that there hath been a prophet among them 6 ¶ And thou son of man be not afraid of them neither be afraid of their words though ‖ Or rebels briers and thorns be with thee and thou dost dwell among scorpions be not afraid of their words not be dismayed at their looks though they be a rebellious house 7 And thou shalt speak my words unto them whether they will hear or whether they will forbear for they are †Heb. rebellion most rebellious 8 But thou son of man hear what I say unto thee Be not thou rebellions like that rebellious house open thy mouth and * Rev. 10.9 eat that I give thee 9 ¶ And when I looked behold an hand was sent unto me and lo a roll of a book was therein 10 And he spread it before me and it was written within and without and there was written therein lamentations and mourning and wo. Or interdict decree that whosoever shall ask a petition of any God or man for thirty days save of thee O king he shall be cast into the den of lions 8 Now O king establish the decree and signe the writing that it be not changed according to the * Esth 1.19 and 8,8 law of the Medes and Persians which †Cald. passeth not altereth not 9 Wherefore king Darius signed the writing and the decree 10 ¶ Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed he went into his house and his windows being open in his chamber * 1 Kin. 8.48 toward Jerusalem he kneeled upon his knees * Ps 55.17 three times a day and prayed and gave thanks before his God as he did aforetime 11 Then these men assembled and found Daniel praying and making supplication before his God 12 Then they came near and spake before the king concerning the kings decree Hast thou not signed a decree that every man that shall ask a petition of any God of man within thirty days save of thee O king shall be cast into the den of lions The king answered and said The thing is true according to the law of the Medes and Pertians which altereth not 13 Then answered they and said before the king That Daniel which is of the children of the captivity of Judah regardeth not thee O king nor the decree that thou hast signed but maketh his petition three times a day 14 Then the king when he heard these words was sore displeased with himself and set his heart on Daniel to deliver him and he laboured till the going down of the sun to deliver him 15 Then these men assembled unto the king and said unto the king Know O king that the law of the Medes and Persians is that no decree nor statute which the king establisheth may be changed 16 Then the king commanded and they brought Daniel and cast him into the den of lions now the king spake and said unto Daniel Thy God whom thou servest continually he will deliver thee 17 And a stone was brought and laid upon the mouth of the den and the king sealed it with his own signet and with the signet of his lords that the purpose might not be changed concerning Daniel 18 ¶ Then the king went to his palace and passed the night fasting neither were ‖ Or table instruments of musick brought before him and his sleep went from him 19 Then the king arose very early in the morning and went in haste unto the den of lions 20 And when he came to the den he cried with a lamentable voice unto Daniel and the king spake and said to Daniel O Daniel servant of the living God is thy God whom thou servest continually able to deliver thee from the lions 21 Then said Daniel unto the king O king live for ever 22 My God hath sent his angel and hath shut the lions mouths that they have not hurt me forasmuch as before him innocency was found in me and also before thee O king have I done no hurt 23 Then was the king exceeding glad for him and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den so Daniel was taken up out of the den and no manner of hurt was found upon him because he beleeved in his God 24 ¶ And the king commanded and they brought those men which had accused Daniel and they cast them into the den of lions them their children and their wives and the lions had the mastery of them and brake all their bones in pieces or ever they came at the bottom of the den 25 ¶ Then king Darius wrote unto all people nations and languages that dwell in all the earth Peace be multiplied unto you 26 I make a decree that in every dominion of my kingdom men tremble and fear before the God of Daniel for he is the living God and stedfast for ever and his kingdom that which shall not be * Ch. 2.44 and 4.3 7 14.2â— Luk. 1.33 destroyed and his dominion shall be even unto the end 27 He delivereth and rescueth and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth who hath delivered Daniel from the †Heb. band power of the lions 28 So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius and in the reign of * Ch. 1.21 Cyrus the Persian CHAP. VII 1 Daniels vision of four beasts 9 of Gods kingdom 15 The interpretation thereof IN the first year of Belshazzar king of Babylon Daniel †Cald. saâ—â— had a dream and visions of his head upon his bed then he wrote the dream and told the sum of the ‖ Or words matters 2 Daniel spake and said I saw in my vision by night and behold the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea 3 And four great beasts came up from the sea diverse one from another 4 The first was like a lion and had eagles wings and I beheld till the wings thereof were pluckt ‖ Or wherewith and it was lifted up from the earth and made stand upon the feet as a man a mans heart was given to it 5 And behold another beast a second like to a bear and ‖ Or it raised up one dominion it raised up it self on one side and it had three ribs in the mouth of it between the teeth of it and they said thus unto it Arise devour much flesh 6 After this I beheld and lo another like a leopard which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl the beast had also four heads and dominion was given to it 7 After this I saw in the night-visions and behold a fourth beast dreadful and terrible and strong exceedingly and it had great iron teeth it devoured and brake in pieces and stamped the residue with the feet of it and it was diverse from all the beasts that were before it and it had ten horns 8 I considered the horns and behold there came up among them another little horn before whom there were three of the first horns pluckt up by the roots and behold in this horn were eyes like the eyes of man and a mouth speaking great things 9 ¶ I beheld till the thrones were cast down and the Ancient of days did sit whose garment was white as snow and the hair of his head like the pure wooli his throne was like the fiery flame and his wheels as burning fire 10 A fiery stream issued and came forth from before him * Rev. 5. â—â— thousand thousands ministred unto him ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him the judgement was set and the * Rev. 17.12 books were opened 11 I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake I beheld even till the beast was slain and his body destroyed and given to the burning flame 12 As concerning the rest of the beasts they had their dominion taken away yet

IV. 1 Gods judgement on the wicked 2 and his blessing on the good 4 He exhorteth to the study of the law 5 and telleth of Elijahs coming and office FOr behold the day cometh that shall burn as an oven and all the proud yea and all that do wickedly shall be stubble and the day that cometh shall burn them up saith the LORD of hosts that it shall leave them neither root nor branch 2 ¶ But unto you that fear my name shall the * Luk. 1.78 sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings and ye shall go forth and grow up as calves of the stall 3 And ye shall tread down the wicked for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this saith the LORD of hosts 4 ¶ Remember ye the * Exod. 20.3 law of Moses my servant which I commanded unto him in Horeb for all Israel with the statutes and judgements 5 ¶ Behold I will send you * Mat. 11.14 Mar. 9.11 Luk. 1.17 Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD 6 And he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children and the heart of the children to their fathers lest I come and smite the earth with a curse The end of the Prophets APOCRYPHA I. Chr. 35.15 of David and Asaph of David to wit Asaph Zacharias and Jeduthun who was * 2 Chr. 35.15 the kings stâ—â— of the kings retinue 16 Moreover the porters were at every gate it was not lawful for any to go from his ordinary service for their brethren the Levites prepared for them 17 Thus were the things that belonged to the sacrifices of the Lord accomplished in that day that they might hold the pass-over 18 And offer sacrifices upon the altar of the LORD according to the commandment of king Josias 19 So the children of Israel which were present held the pass-over at that time and the feast of sweet bread seven days 20 And such a pass-over was not kept in Israel since the time of the prophet Samuel 21 Yea all the kings of Israel held not such a pass-over as Josias and the priests and the Levites and the Jews held with all Israel that were found dwelling at Jerusalem 22 In the eighteenth year of the reign of Josias was this pass-over kept 23 And the works of Josias were upright before his Lord with an heart full of godliness 24 As for the things that came to pass in his time they were written in former times concerning those

of Israel which is in heaven he gave them over into the power of Nebuchodonosor king of Babylon of the Caldees 16 Who pulled down the house and burnt it and carried away the people captives unto Babylon 17 But in the first year that king Cyrus reigned over the countrey of Babylon Cyrus the king wrote to build up this house 18 And the holy vessels of gold and of silver that Nebuchodonosor had carried away out of the house at Jerusalem and had set them in his own temple those Cyrus the king brought forth again out of the temple at Babylon and they were delivered to ‖ Or Zorobabel which is also Sanabassar the ruler so as Zorobabel seemeth to be added to the text Ezra 1.8 Zorobabel and to Sanabassarus the ruler 19 With commandment that he should carry away the same vessels and put them in the temple at Jerusalem and that the temple of the Lord should be built in his place 20 Then the same Sanabassarus being come hither laid the foundations of the house of the Lord at Jerusalem and from that time to this being still a building it is not yet fully ended 21 Now therefore if it seem good unto the king let search be made among the ‖ Or rolls records of king Cyrus 22 And if it be found that the building of the house of the Lord at Jerusalem hath been done with the consent of king Cyrus and if our lord the king be so minded let him signifie unto us thereof 23 Then commanded king Darius to seek among the records at Babylon and so at Echatana the palace which is in the countrey of Media there was found a ‖ Or place roll wherein these things were recorded 24 In the first year of the reign of Cyrus king Cyrus commanded that the house of the Lord at Jerusalem should be built again where they do sacrifice with continual fire 25 Whos 's height shall be sixty cubits and the breadth sixty cubits with three rowes of hewn stones and one row of new wood of that countrey and the expenses thereof to be given out of the house of king Cyrus 26 And that the holy vessels of the house of the Lord both of gold and silver that Nebuchodonosor took out of the house at Jerusalem and brought to Babylon should be restored to the house at Jerusalem and be set in the place where they were before 27 And also he commanded that Sisinnes the governour of Syria and Phenice and Sathrabuzanes and their companions and those which were appointed rulers in Syria and Phenice should be careful not to meddle with the place but suffer Zorobabel the servant of the Lord and governour of Judea and the elders of the Jews to build the house of the Lord in that place 28 I have commanded also to have it built up whole again and that they look diligently to help those that be of the captivity of the Jews till the house of the Lord be finished 29 And out of the tribute of Celosyria and Phenice a portion carefully to be given these men for the sacrifices of the Lord that is to Zorobabel the governour for bullocks and rams and lambs 30 And also corn salt wine and oyl and that continually every year without further question according as the priests that be in Jerusalem shall signifie to be daily spent 31 That ‖ Or drink-offerings offerings may be made to the most high God for the king and for his children and that they may pray for their lives 32 And he commanded that whosoever should transgress yea or make light of any thing afore spoken or written out of his own house should a tree be taken and he thereon be hanged and all his goods seised for the king 33 The Lord therefore whose name is there called upon utterly destroy every king and nation that stretcheth out his hand to hinder or endamage that house of the Lord in Jerusalem 34 I Darius the king have ordained that according unto these things it be done with diligence CHAP. VII 1 Sisinnes and others help forward the building 5 The temple is finished and dedicated 10 The pass-over is kept THen * Ezra 6.13 Sisinnes the governour of Celosyria and Phenice and Sathrabuzanes with their companions following the commandments of king Darius 2 Did very carefully oversee the holy works assisting the ancients of the Jews and governours of the temple 3 And so the holy works prospered when Aggeus and Zacharias the prophets prophesied 4 And they finished these things by the commandment of the Lord God of Israel and with ‖ Or the decrâ—â— the consent of Cyrus Darius and Artaxerxes kings of Persia 5 And thus was the holy house finished in †Heb. the third day Ezra 6.15 the three and twentieth day of the moneth Adar in the sixth year of Darius king of the Persians 6 And the children of Israel the priests and the Levites and other that were of the captivity that were added unto them did according to the things written in the book of Moses 7 And to the dedication of the temple of the Lord they offered an hundred bullocks two hundred rams four hundred lambs 8 And twelve goats for the sin of all Israel according to the number of the ‖ Or tribes chief of the tribes of Israel 9 The priests also and the Levites stood arayed in their vestments according to their †Heb. divisions Ezra 6.18 kindreds in the services of the Lord God of Israel according to the book of Moses and the porters at every gate 10 And the children of Israel ‖ Or with those that c. that were of the captivity held the pass-over the fourteenth day of the first moneth after that the priests and the Levites were sanctified 11 They that were of the captivity were not all sanctified together but the Levites were all sanctified together 12 And so they offered the pass-over for all them of the captivity and for their brethren the priests and for themselves 13 And the children of Israel that came out of the captivity did eat even all they that had separated themselves from the abominations of the people of the land and sought the Lord. 14 And they kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days making merry before the Lord 15 For that he had turned the ‖ Or minde counsel of the king of Assyria towards them to strengthen their hands in the works of the Lord God of Israel CHAP. ESDRAS CHAP. I. 1 Esdras is commanded to reprove the people 24 God threatneth to cast them off 35 to give their houses to a people of more grace then they THe second book of the prophet * Ezra 7.1 Esdras the son of Saraias the son of Azarias the son of Helchias the son of ‖ Or Shallum Sadamias the son of Sadoc the son of Achitob 2 The son of Achias the son of Phinees the son of Heli the son of Amarias the son of Aziei the son of Marimoth the son of Arna the son of Ozias the son of Borith the son of Abisei the son of Phinees the son of Eleazar 3 The son of Aaron of the tribe of Levi which was captive in the land of the Medes in the reign of Artaxerxes king of the Persians 4 And the word of the Lord came unto me saying 5 Go thy way and * Isa â— â— shew my people their sinful deeds and their children their wickedness which they have done against me that they may tell their childrens children 6 Because the sins of their fathers are increased in them for they have forgotten me and have offered unto strange gods 7 Am not I even he that brought them out of the land of Egypt from the house of bondage but they have provoked me unto wrath and despised my counsels 8 Pull thou off then the hair of thy head and cast all evil upon them for they have not been obedient unto my law but it is a rebellious people 9 How long shall I forbear them unto whom I have done so much good 10 Many kings have I destroyed for their sakes * Ex. 14.28 Pharaoh with his servants and all his power have I smitten down 11 * Num. 21.24 Josh 8 and 10 and 12. alone and through none other by me also they shall be ended and by none other 7 Then answered I and said What shall be the parting asunder of the times or when shall be the end of the first and the beginning of it that followeth 8 And he said unto me From Abraham unto Isaac when Jacob and Esau were born of him * Gen. 25.26 Jacobs hand held ‖ Or from the beginning first the heel of Esau 9 For Esau is the end of the world and Jacob is the beginning of it that followeth 10 The hand of man is betwixt the heel and the hand other question Esdras ask thou not 11 ¶ I answered then and said O Lord that bearest rule if I have found favour in thy sight 12 I beseech thee shew thy servant the end of thy tokens whereof thou shewedst me part the last night 13 So he answered and said unto me Stand up upon thy feet and hear a mighty sounding voice 14 And it shall be as it were a great ‖ Or earthquake motion but the place where thou standest shall not be moved 15 And therefore when it speaketh be not afraid for the word is of the end and the foundation of the earth is understood 16 And way because the speech of these things trembleth and is moved for it knoweth that the end of these things must be changed 17 And it hapned that when I had heard it I stood up upon my feet and hearkned and behold there was a voice that spake and the sound of it was like the sound of many waters 18 And it said Behold the days come that I will begin to draw nigh and to vnit them that dwell upon the earth 19 And will begin to make inquisition of them what they be that have hurt unjustly with their unrighteousness and when the affliction of Sion shall be fulfilled 20 And when the world that shall begin to vanish away shall be ‖ Ot â—â—aâ—â—d finished then will I shew these tokens the books shall be opened before the firmament and they shall see all together 21 And the children of a year old shall speak with their voices the women with childe shall bring forth untimely children of three or four moneths old and they shall live and be raised up 22 And suddenly shall the sown places appear unsown the full store-houses shall suddenly be found empty 23 And the trumpet shall give a sound which when every man heareth they shall be suddenly afraid 24 At that time shall friends fight one against another like enemies and the earth shall stand in fear with those that dwell therein the springs of the fountains shall stand still and in three hours they shall not run 25 Whosoever remaineth from all these that I have told thee shall escape and see my salvation and the end of your world 26 And the men that are received shall see it who have not tasted death from their birth and the heart of the inhabitants shall be changed and turned into another meaning 27 For evil shall be put out and deceit shall be quenched 28 As for faith it shall flourish corruption shall be overcome and the truth which hath been so long without fruit shall be declared 29 And when he talked with me behold I looked by little and little upon him before whom I stood 30 And these words said he unto me I am come to shew thee the time of the night to come 31 If thou wilt pray yet more and fast seven days again I shall tell thee greater things ‖ See ch 13. vers 52. by day then I have heard 32 For thy voice is heard before the most High for the Mighty hath seen thy righteous dealing he hath seen also thy chastity which thou hast had ever since thy youth 33 And therefore hath he sent me to shew thee all these things and to say unto thee Be of good comfort and fear not 34 And hasten not with the times that are past to think vain things that thou mayest not hasten from the latter times 35 And it came to pass after this that I wept again and fasted seven days in like manner that I might fulfiâ— the three weeks which he told me 36 And in the eighth night was my heart vexed within me again and I began to speak before the most High 37 For my spirit was greatly set on fire and my soul was in distress 38 And I said O Lord thou speakest from the beginning of the creation even the first day and saidest thus * Gen. â— 1 Let heaven and earth be made and thy word was a perfect work 39 And then was the spirit and darknesses and silence were on every side the sound of mans voice was not yet formed 40 Then commandedst thou a fair light to come forth of thy treasures that thy work might appear 41 Upon the second day thou madest the spirit of the firmament and commandedst it to part asunder and to make a division betwixt the waters that the one part might go up and the other remain beneath 42 Upon the third day thou didst command that the waters should be gathered in the seventh part of the earth six parts hast thou died up and kept them to the intent that of these some being planted of God and tilled might serve thee 43 For as soon as thy word went forth the work was made 44 For immediately there weâ— great and innumerable fruit and many and divers pleasures for the taste and flowers of unchangeable colour and odours of wonderful smell and this was done the third day 45 * Gen. 1.14 Upon the fourth day thou commandedst that the sun should shine and the moon give her light and the stars should be in order 46 And gavest them a charge to do * Gen. 1.15 Deut. 4.19 service unto man that was to be made 47 Upon the fifth day thou saidest unto the seventh part * Gen. 1.20 where the waters were gathered that it should bring forth living creatures fowls and fishes and so it came to pass 48 For the dumb water and without life brought forth living things at the commandment of God that all people might praise thy wondrous works 49 Then didst thou ordain two living creatures the one thou calledâ—t ‖ Bebemoth Enoch and the other Leviathan 50 And didst separate the one from the other for the seventh part namely where the water was gathered together might not hold them both 51 Unto Enoch thou gavest one part which was dried up the third day that he should dwell in the same part wherein are a thousand hills 52 But unto Leviathan thou gavest the seventh part namely the moist and hast kept him to be devoured of whom thou wilt and when 53 Upon the sixth day thou gavest commandment unto the earth that before thee it should bring forth beasts cattel and creeping things 54 And after these Adam also whom thou madest lord of all thy creatures
carry the dinner that thou hast into Babylon unto Daniel who is in the lions den 35 And Habbacuc said Lord I never saw Babylon neither do I know where the den is 36 Then the angel of the Lord took him by the crown and * Ezek. 8.3 bare him by the hair of his head and through the vehemency of his spirit set him in Babylon over the den 37 And Habbacuc cried saying O Daniel Daniel * 1 Kin. 17.4 take the dinner which God hath sent thee 38 And Daniel said Thou hast remembred me O God neither hast thou forsaken them that seek thee and love thee 39 So Daniel arose and did eat and the angel of the Lord set Habbacuc in his own place again immediately 40 Upon the seventh day the king went to bewail Daniel and when he came to the den he looked in and behold Daniel was sitting 41 Then cried the king with a loud voice saying Great art thou O Lord God of Daniel and there is none other besides thee 42 * Jer. 37.17 And he drew him out and cast those that were the cause of his destruction into the den and they were devoured in a moment before his face ¶ The prayer of MANASSES king of Juda when he was holden captive in Babylon O Lord almighty God of our fathers Abraham Isaac and Jacob and of their righteous seed who hast made heaven and earth with all the ornament thereof who hast bound the sea by the word of thy commandment who hast shut up the deep and sealed it by thy terrible and glorious name whom all men fear and tremble before they power for the majesty of thy glory cannot be born and thine angry threatning towards sinners is importable but thy merciful promise is unmeasurable and unsearchable for thou art the most high Lord of great compassion long-suffering very merciful and repentest of the evils of men Thou O Lord according to thy great goodness hast promised repentance and forgiveness to them that have sinned against thee and of thine infinite mercies hast appointed repentance unto sinners that they may be saved Thou therefore O Lord that art the God of the just hast not appointed repentance to the just as to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob which have not sinned against thee but thou hast appointed repentance unto me that am a sinner for I have sinned above the number of the sands of the sea My transgressions O Lord are multiplied my transgressions are multiplied and I am not worthy to behold and see the height of heaven for the multitude of mine iniquity I am bowed down with many iron bands that I cannot lift up mine head ‖ Or neither take my breath neither have any release for I have provoked thy wrath and done evil before thee I did not thy will neither kept I thy commandments I have set up abominations and have multiplied offences Now therefore I bow the knee of mine heart beseeching thee of grace I have sinned O Lord I have sinned and I acknowledge mine iniquities wherefore I humbly beseech thee forgive me O Lord forgive me and destroy me not with mine iniquities Be not angry with me for ever by reserving evil for me neither condemn me into the lower parts of the earth For thou art the God even the God of them that repent and in me thou wilt shew all thy goodness for thou wilt save me that am unworthy according to thy great mercy Therefore I will praise thee for ever all the days of my life for all the powers of the heavens do praise thee and thine is the glory for ever and ever Amen ¶ The first book of the MACCABEES CHAP. I. 14 Antiochus gave leave to set up the fashions of the Gentiles in Jerusalem 22 and spoiled it and the temple in it 57 and set up therein the abomination of desolation 63 and slew those that did circumcise their children ANd it hapned after that Alexander son of Philip the Macedonian who came out of the land of ‖ Or Chetbiim Chettiim had smitten Darius king of the Persians and Medes that he reigned in his stead the first over Greece 2 And made many wars and wan many strong holds and slew the kings of the earth 3 And went through to the ends of the earth and took spoils of many nations insomuch that the earth was quiet before him whereupon ‖ Or his heart was exalted and lifted up he was exalted and his heart was lifted up 4 And he gathered a mighty strong host and ruled over countreys and nations and ‖ Or kingdoms which became c. kings who became tributaries unto him 5 And after these things he fell sick and perceived †Gr. that he dieth that he should die 6 Wherefore he called his servants such as were honourable and had been brought up with him from his youth and parted his kingdom among them while he was yet alive 7 So Alexander reigned twelve years and then died 8 And his servants bare rule every one in his place 9 And after his death they all put crowns upon themselves so did their sons after them many years and evils were multiplied in the earth 10 And there came out of them a wicked root Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes son of Antiochus the king who had been an hostage at Rome and he reigned in the hundred and thirty and seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks 11 In those days went there out of Israel wicked men who perswaded many saying Let us go and make a covenant with the heathen that are round about us for since we departed from them †Gr. many evils have found us we have had much sorrow 12 So this device pleased them well 13 Then certain of the people were so forward herein that they went to the king who gave them licence to do after the ordinances of the heathen 14 Whereupon they ‖ Or set up an open school at Jerusalem built a place of exercise at Jerusalem according to the customs of the heathen 15 And made themselves uncircumcised and forsook the holy covenant and joyned themselves to the heathen and were sold to do mischief 16 Now when the kingdom was established before Antiochus he thought to reign over Egypt that he might have the dominion of two realms 17 Wherefore he entred into Egypt with a great multitude with chariots and elephants and hors-men and a great navy 18 And made war against Ptolemee king of Egypt but Ptolemee was afraid of him and fled and many were wounded to death 19 Thus they got the strong cities in the land of Egypt and he took the spoils thereof 20 And after that Antiochus had smitten Egypt he returned again in the hundred fourty and third year and went up against Israel and Jerusalem with a great multitude 21 And entred proudly into the sanctuary and took away the golden altar and the candlestick of light and all the vessels thereof 22 And the table
full of the holy Ghost retumed from Jordan and was led by the spirit into the wilderness 2 Being fourty days tempted of the devil and in those days he did eat nothing and when they were ended he afterward hungred 3 And the devil said unto him It thou be the Son of God command this stone that it be made bread 4 And Jesus answered him saying It is written That man shall not live by bread alone unto you No * Mat. 13.57 prophet is accepted in his own countrey 25 But I tell you of a truth * 1 Kin. 17.9 many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias when the heaven was shut up three years and tabernacle which is called the holiest of all 4 Which had the golden censer and the ark of the covenant overlaid round about with gold wherein was * Ex. 16.34 the golden pot that had manna and * Num. 17.16 Aâ—rons rod that budded and * Deut. 10.5 1 King 8.9 〈◊〉 Chr. 5.10 the tables of the covenant 5 And * Ex. 25.22 over it the cherubims of glory shadowing the mercy-seat of which we cannot now speak particularly 6 Now when these things were thus ordained the priests went always into the first tabernacle accomplishing the service of God 7 But into the second went the high priest alone * Ex. 30.10 â—ev 16. 〈◊〉 once every year not without bloud which he offered for himself and for the errours of the people 8 The holy Ghost this signifying that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest while as the first tabernacle was yet standing 9 Which was a sigure for the time then present in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices that could not make him that did the service perfect as pertaining to the conscience 10 Which stood onely in meats and drinks and divers washings and carnal ‖ Or vitor ceremonies ordinances imposed on them until the time of reformation 11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come by a greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands that is to say not of this building 12 Neither by the bloud of goats and calves but by his own bloud he entred in once into the holy place having obtained eternal redemption fâ—r us 13 For it * Lev. 1â— 14 the bloud of bulls and of goats and * 1 Num. 19.17 c. the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh 14 How much more shall the bloud of Christ who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without ‖ Or fault spot to God purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God 15 And for this cause he is the Mediatour of the new testament that by means of death for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance 16 For where a testament is there must also of necessity ‖ Or be brought in be the death of the testatour 17 For a testament is of force after men are dead otherwise it is of no strength at all whilest the testatour liveth 18 Whereupon neither the first testament was ‖ Or purified dedicated without bloud 19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law he took the bloud of calves and of goats with water and ‖ Or purple scarlet wooll and hyssop and sprinkled both the book and all the people 20 Saying * Eâ— 24.8 This is the bloud of the testament which God hath enjoyned unto you 21 Moreover he sprinkled likewise with bloud both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministery 22 And almost all things are by the law purged with bloud and without shedding of bloud is no remission 23 It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices then these 24 For Christ is not entred into the holy places made with hands which are the figures of the true but into heaven it self now * 1 Joh. 2.1 to appear in the presence of God for us 25 Nor yet that he should offer himself often as the high priest entreth into the holy place every year with bloud of others 26 For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself 27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die but after this the judgement 28 So * 1 Pet. 3.18 Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation CHAP. X. 1 The weakness of the law-sacrifices 10 The sacrifice of Christs body once offered 14 for ever hath taken away sins 19 An exhortation to hold fast the faith with patience and thanksgiving FOr the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very image of the things can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect 2 For then would they not have ceased to be offered because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins 3 But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year 4 For it is not possible that the bloud of bulls and of goats should take away sins 5 Wherefore when he cometh into the world he saith * Psal 10.6 c. Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not but a body ‖ Or thou â—â—st fitted me hast thou prepared me 6 In burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure 7 Then said I Lo I come In the volume of the book it is written of me to do thy will O God 8 Above when he said Sacrifice and offering and barnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not neither hadst pleasure therein which are offered by the law 9 Then said he Lo I come to do thy will O God He taketh away the first that he may establish the second 10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all 11 And every priest standeth daily ministring and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices which can never take away sins 12 But this man after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever sat down on the right hand of God 13 From henceforth expecting * Psal 11â— 1. 1 Cor. 15.25 Chap. 1.13 till his enemies be made his footstool 14 For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified 15 Whereof the holy Ghost also is a witness to us for after that he had said before 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days saith the Lord I will * Jer. 31.33 put my laws into their hearts and in their minds will I write them 17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more 18 Now where remission of these is there is no more offering for sin 19 Having therefore brethren ‖ Or liberty boldness to enter into the holiest by the bloud of Jesus 20 By a new and living way which he hath ‖ Or new mâ—dâ— consecrated for us through the vail that is to say his flesh 21 And having an high priest over the house of God 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and

IV. 2 John seeth the throne of God in heaven 4 The four and twenty elders 6 The four beasts full of eves before and behinde 10 The elders lay down their crowns and worship him that sat on the throne AFter this I looked and behold a door was opened in heaven and the first voice which I heard was as it were of a trumpet talking with me which said Come up hither and I will shew thee things which must be hereafter 2 And immediately I was in the spirit and behold a throne was set in heaven and one sat on the throne 3 And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper a sardine stone there was a rainbowe round about the throne in sight like unto an emerald 4 And round about the throne were four and twenty seats and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting clothed in white raiment and they had on their heads crowns of gold 5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thundrings and voices And there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne which are the seven Spirits of God 6 And before the throne there was a sea of glass like unto crystal And in the midst of the throne and round about the throne were four beasts full of eyes before and behinde 7 And the first beast was like a lion and the second beast like a calf and the third beast had a face as a man and the fourth beast was like a flying eagle 8 And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him and they were full of eyes within and †Gr. they have no rest they rest not day and night saying * Isa 6.3 Holy holy holy Lord God Almighty which was and is is to come 9 And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne who liveth for ever and ever 10 The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne and worship him that liveth for ever and ever and cast their crowns before the throne saying 11 * Ch. 5.12 Thou art worthy O Lord to receive glory and honour and power for thou hast created all things and for thy pleasure they are and were created CHAP.
