they_o be_v so_o if_o not_o in_o themselves_o consider_v yet_o at_o least_o in_o their_o cause_n for_o you_o presumptuous_o run_v into_o those_o occasion_n and_o temptation_n whereby_o in_o all_o likelihood_n you_o will_v be_v overcome_v and_o this_o be_v to_o sin_n presumptuous_o presumptuous_o if_o when_o we_o be_v tempt_v we_o yield_v without_o vigorous_a resistance_n we_o then_o sin_v without_o temptation_n when_o we_o run_v into_o temptation_n and_o occasion_n of_o sin_n and_o when_o we_o make_v no_o vigorous_a opposition_n against_o they_o presumptuous_o to_o sin_v under_o eminent_a judgement_n and_o affliction_n be_v to_o sin_v presumptuous_o in_o the_o five_o place_n another_o trial_n be_v this_o when_o man_n will_v dare_v to_o sin_n under_o eminent_a and_o remarkable_a judgement_n and_o affliction_n that_o god_n bring_v upon_o they_o than_o they_o sin_v presumptuous_o what_o be_v this_o else_o but_o when_o god_n stand_v visible_o in_o your_o way_n yet_o you_o will_v desperate_o run_v upon_o the_o thick_a boss_n of_o his_o buckler_n he_o hedge_n up_o your_o way_n with_o thorn_n and_o yet_o you_o will_v break_v through_o though_o it_o be_v to_o the_o tear_v of_o your_o flesh_n he_o strike_v at_o you_o by_o his_o judgement_n and_o oh_o the_o madness_n and_o presumption_n of_o vile_a dust_n and_o ash_n that_o they_o dare_v to_o strike_v at_o god_n again_o by_o their_o sin_n what_o be_v this_o else_o but_o even_o to_o dare_v god_n to_o do_v his_o worst_a when_o god_n tread_v upon_o we_o shall_v such_o vile_a worm_n as_o we_o be_v turn_v the_o tail_n and_o threaten_v to_o take_v revenge_n upon_o the_o almighty_a this_o be_v presumption_n and_o boldness_n that_o god_n take_v special_a notice_n of_o in_o 2_o chron._n 28_o and_o 22._o ahaz_n be_v bring_v very_o low_a say_v the_o text_n and_o yet_o in_o the_o time_n of_o his_o distress_n he_o trespass_v yet_o more_o against_o the_o lord_n this_o be_v that_o ahaz_n god_n set_v a_o mark_n and_o brand_n upon_o he_o that_o he_o may_v be_v know_v to_o all_o posterity_n for_o a_o most_o dare_a sinner_n that_o when_o god_n have_v bring_v he_o so_o low_a when_o so_o many_o enemy_n wage_v war_n against_o he_o and_o distress_v he_o yet_o even_o then_o he_o provoke_v a_o great_a enemy_n than_o they_o all_o and_o challenge_v god_n against_o he_o this_o be_v that_o king_n ahaz_n true_o covenant_n both_o he_o and_o we_o be_v party_n in_o the_o covenant_n he_o obey_v we_o obey_v and_o he_o sin_v we_o transgress_v what_o he_o do_v as_o in_o this_o public_a capacity_n be_v not_o alone_o his_o personal_a act_n but_o it_o be_v we_o also_o now_o what_o right_a adam_n have_v to_o indent_v for_o his_o posterity_n and_o to_o oblige_v they_o to_o the_o term_n of_o the_o covenant_n i_o in_o the_o separation_n of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n from_o the_o soul_n man_n waâ—_n immediate_o deprive_v of_o that_o holiness_n and_o perfect_a righteousness_n wherein_o the_o image_n of_o god_n do_v consist_v then_o three_o observe_v no_o action_n can_v be_v holy_a that_o do_v not_o flow_v from_o the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o the_o soul_n as_o from_o its_o principle_n every_o action_n be_v sinful_a that_o have_v not_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n for_o its_o end_n now_o no_o action_n can_v have_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n for_o its_o end_n that_o have_v not_o the_o image_n oâ—_n god_n for_o its_o principle_n and_o therefore_o man_n be_v despoil_v of_o this_o image_n of_o god_n there_o be_v no_o action_n of_o any_o man_n in_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n but_o what_o be_v sinful_a and_o corrupt_a and_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o in_o regeneration_n god_n again_o stamp_v his_o image_n upon_o the_o soul_n not_o indeed_o so_o perfect_o as_o at_o man_n first_o creation_n but_o yet_o in_o such_o a_o degree_n as_o do_v through_o grace_n enable_v he_o to_o act_n holy_o and_o in_o some_o measure_n according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n four_o though_o man_n be_v despoil_v of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n and_o can_v act_n holy_o yet_o he_o be_v a_o busy_a and_o active_a creature_n and_o must_v and_o will_v be_v still_o act_v he_o have_v a_o active_a nature_n and_o he_o have_v active_a faculty_n still_o leave_v he_o though_o the_o image_n of_o god_n that_o shall_v make_v those_o action_n holy_a be_v just_o take_v from_o he_o and_o here_o at_o last_o we_o have_v trace_v out_o the_o true_a cause_n of_o that_o strong_a propension_n that_o there_o be_v in_o all_o man_n unto_o sin_n while_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v the_o image_n of_o god_n it_o seek_v especial_o to_o do_v all_o in_o reference_n unto_o god_n but_o now_o that_o it_o have_v lose_v that_o image_n it_o can_v any_o long_o raise_v up_o its_o action_n to_o a_o suitableness_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o now_o it_o sink_v they_o and_o seek_v only_o to_o please_v its_o own_o carnal_a desire_n and_o appetite_n take_v the_o whole_a resolution_n of_o it_o in_o two_o or_o three_o word_n the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n make_v it_o prone_a and_o incline_v to_o act_n for_o it_o be_v a_o busy_a active_a creature_n and_o if_o it_o act_v it_o must_v sin_n because_o it_o have_v not_o the_o image_n of_o god_n to_o raise_v its_o action_n to_o a_o holy_a and_o divine_a conformity_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o now_o to_o be_v prone_a to_o act_n be_v to_o be_v prone_a to_o sin_n and_o this_o be_v the_o true_a ground_n of_o that_o strong_a propension_n that_o be_v in_o all_o man_n to_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o sinful_a quest_n but_o you_o will_v say_v if_o this_o proneness_n to_o sin_n be_v from_o the_o loss_n of_o god_n image_n how_o come_v it_o to_o pass_v that_o those_o who_o be_v renew_v again_o according_a to_o the_o image_n of_o god_n do_v still_o complain_v of_o this_o strong_a proneness_n and_o propension_n to_o sin_n answ_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o those_o of_o fall_v mankind_n to_o who_o god_n be_v please_v to_o restore_v his_o image_n in_o regeneration_n according_o as_o this_o image_n be_v more_o or_o less_o perfect_a so_o be_v this_o proneness_n to_o sin_v more_o or_o less_o strong_a but_o because_o the_o best_a be_v but_o in_o part_n renew_v therefore_o this_o sinful_a proneness_n be_v but_o in_o part_n destroy_v in_o the_o best_a grace_n weaken_v it_o but_o grace_n do_v not_o quite_o remove_v it_o and_o therefore_o the_o holy_a christian_n have_v and_o shall_v have_v as_o long_o as_o he_o live_v in_o this_o world_n '_o cause_n to_o complain_v with_o the_o apostle_n roman_n 7._o 23._o i_o see_v another_o law_n in_o my_o member_n war_a against_o the_o law_n of_o my_o mind_n there_o be_v a_o carnal_a sensual_a inclination_n in_o he_o strong_o sway_v he_o to_o sin_v contrary_a to_o the_o bent_n and_o inclination_n of_o his_o renew_a part_n and_o therefore_o he_o shall_v have_v cause_n still_o to_o cry_v out_o with_o the_o apostle_n oh_o wretched_a man_n that_o i_o be_o who_o shall_v propension_n that_o be_v in_o a_o child_n of_o god_n to_o every_o sin_n but_o not_o to_o destroy_v that_o propension_n to_o any_o one_o sin_n at_o all_o no_o not_o to_o the_o foul_a and_o vile_a sin_n the_o old_a man_n in_o this_o life_n never_o lose_v one_o limb_n though_o it_o be_v weaken_v and_o consume_a away_o in_o his_o whole_a body_n take_v a_o child_n of_o god_n that_o before_o his_o conversion_n have_v a_o strong_a propension_n to_o any_o sin_n suppose_v what_o sin_n you_o will_v though_o never_o so_o foul_a and_o horrid_a the_o same_o propension_n still_o remain_v it_o be_v not_o indeed_o so_o violent_a and_o rage_a as_o it_o be_v but_o there_o it_o be_v it_o be_v abate_v and_o overcome_v by_o grace_n but_o still_o there_o be_v the_o same_o proneness_n to_o sin_n it_o may_v be_v a_o christian_n be_v not_o so_o sensible_a of_o this_o propension_n to_o sin_n not_o so_o frequent_o as_o former_o he_o have_v but_o yet_o the_o experience_n of_o the_o best_a sometime_o can_v inform_v they_o that_o even_o to_o the_o worst_a sin_n and_o most_o horrid_a temptation_n they_o find_v a_o faction_n and_o party_n in_o their_o heart_n to_o promote_v they_o and_o it_o be_v as_o much_o work_n as_o grace_n can_v do_v to_o subdue_v and_o quell_v these_o great_a sin_n i_o now_o come_v to_o inquire_v into_o the_o ground_n and_o reason_n why_o god_n shall_v suffer_v this_o proneness_n to_o sin_n to_o continue_v in_o his_o dear_a saint_n and_o child_n after_o their_o conversion_n and_o regeneration_n possible_o some_o may_v think_v it_o will_v have_v be_v far_o more_o conducible_a to_o god_n glory_n as_o well_o as_o their_o own_o peace_n and_o comfort_n if_o god_n have_v at_o once_o at_o their_o first_o conversion_n utter_o destroy_v all_o the_o seed_n and_o remainder_n of_o corruption_n in_o they_o and_o at_o first_o make_v they_o as_o perfect_o holy_a as_o they_o shall_v be_v at_o last_o hereby_o god_n will_v not_o have_v be_v so_o
shall_v unfold_v it_o in_o these_o follow_a particular_n first_o pardon_v and_o remission_n of_o sin_n only_a pardon_v of_o sin_n a_o act_n of_o god_n only_a be_v no_o act_n of_o we_o but_o a_o act_n of_o god_n only_a it_o be_v nothing_o do_v by_o we_o or_o in_o we_o but_o a_o act_n of_o god_n free_a grace_n mere_o without_o we_o and_o therefore_o god_n ascribe_v it_o whole_o unto_o himself_o i_o even_o i_o be_o he_o and_o when_o our_o saviour_n cure_v the_o paralytic_n the_o scribe_n storm_v at_o he_o as_o a_o blasphemer_n thou_o blaspheme_v say_v they_o to_o he_o not_o know_v he_o to_o be_v god_n for_o who_o say_v they_o can_v forgive_v sin_n but_o god_n only_o but_o be_v it_o a_o act_n of_o god_n only_a and_o not_o we_o and_o a_o act_n whole_o without_o we_o what_o comfort_n be_v there_o in_o this_o yes_o much_o and_o that_o upon_o these_o ground_n because_o god_n act_n within_o we_o be_v always_o imperfect_a in_o this_o life_n but_o god_n act_n without_o we_o be_v always_o perfect_a and_o consummate_v sanctification_n be_v a_o work_n of_o god_n grace_n within_o we_o now_o this_o because_o it_o meet_v with_o much_o opposition_n in_o every_o faculty_n from_o inherent_a sin_n which_o spread_v itself_o over_o the_o whole_a soul_n therefore_o this_o work_n be_v always_o in_o this_o life_n keep_v low_a and_o weak_a but_o pardon_v of_o sin_n be_v a_o act_n without_o we_o in_o the_o breast_n of_o god_n himself_o where_o it_o meet_v with_o no_o opposition_n nor_o allay_n nor_o do_v it_o increase_v by_o small_a degree_n but_o be_v at_o once_o as_o perfect_a and_o entire_a aâ—_n ever_o it_o shall_v be_v i_o do_v not_o mean_v aâ—_n some_o have_v think_v and_o teach_v that_o god_n at_o once_o pardon_v all_o the_o sin_n of_o true_a believer_n as_o well_o those_o they_o do_v or_o shall_v commit_v as_o those_o that_o they_o have_v already_o commit_v but_o only_o that_o what_o sin_n god_n pardon_n he_o do_v not_o pardon_v then_o gradual_o there_o be_v nothing_o leave_v oâ—_n gild_n upon_o the_o soul_n when_o god_n pardon_v it_o but_o there_o be_v something_o leave_v oâ—_n filth_n upon_o the_o soul_n when_o god_n sanctify_v it_o and_o therefore_o as_o it_o be_v the_o grief_n of_o god_n child_n that_o their_o inherent_a holiness_n be_v so_o imperfect_a here_o that_o they_o be_v so_o assault_v with_o temptation_n so_o dog_v by_o corruption_n so_o oppress_v and_o almost_o stifle_v to_o death_n by_o a_o body_n of_o sin_n that_o lie_v heavy_a upon_o they_o yet_o this_o on_o the_o other_o side_n may_v be_v for_o their_o comfort_n and_o encouragement_n that_o god_n pardon_v grace_n be_v not_o as_o his_o sanctify_a grace_n be_v nor_o be_v it_o grant_v to_o they_o by_o the_o same_o stint_n and_o measure_n a_o sin_n true_o repent_v of_o be_v not_o pardon_v to_o we_o by_o half_n half_o the_o gild_n remit_v and_o half_o retain_v as_o the_o papist_n fancy_n to_o establish_v their_o doctrine_n of_o purgatory_n but_o it_o be_v as_o full_o pardon_v as_o it_o shall_v be_v in_o heaven_n itself_o and_o hence_o it_o follow_v first_o though_o the_o gild_n of_o sin_n be_v remove_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o our_o repentance_n that_o remove_v it_o for_o then_o as_o no_o man_n repentance_n be_v absolute_o perfect_a so_o no_o man_n sin_n shall_v be_v full_o pardon_v but_o still_o there_o will_v be_v remainder_n of_o gild_n leave_v upon_o the_o conscience_n as_o there_o be_v still_o a_o mixture_n of_o impenitency_n in_o the_o best_a christian_n but_o pardon_v and_o remission_n be_v not_o mingle_v with_o gild_n as_o grace_n be_v with_o sin_n because_o it_o be_v a_o act_n of_o mercy_n wrought_v not_o in_o our_o breast_n but_o arise_v in_o god_n only_a where_o it_o meet_v with_o nothing_o to_o allay_v or_o abate_v it_o and_o it_o be_v infinite_o more_o perfect_a than_o our_o repentance_n can_v be_v second_o hence_o we_o may_v infer_v be_v pardon_v of_o sin_n more_o sure_a than_o our_o assurance_n of_o it_o can_v be_v that_o our_o pardon_n be_v infinite_o more_o sure_a than_o our_o assurance_n of_o it_o in_o our_o own_o conscience_n can_v be_v satisfactory_a for_o the_o sense_n of_o pardon_n be_v a_o work_n of_o god_n spirit_n within_o we_o which_o common_o be_v mix_v with_o some_o hesitation_n misgivings_a doubt_n and_o fear_n and_o therefore_o though_o our_o comfort_n be_v never_o so_o strong_a though_o it_o be_v springtide_n with_o we_o yet_o our_o ground_n for_o comfort_n be_v still_o much_o more_o oh_o what_o rich_a and_o abundant_a grace_n be_v this_o in_o god_n towards_o we_o that_o exceed_v both_o our_o grace_n and_o our_o comfort_n and_o therefore_o though_o o_o christian_n thy_o sanctification_n be_v the_o best_a evidence_n of_o thy_o justification_n and_o pardon_n yet_o be_v it_o not_o the_o forget_v as_o though_o no_o provocation_n or_o offence_n have_v ever_o be_v commit_v he_o retain_v not_o his_o anger_n for_o ever_o say_v the_o prophet_n micah_n 7.14_o not_o for_o ever_o but_o so_o soon_o as_o ever_o we_o grow_v displease_v with_o ourselves_o he_o begin_v to_o be_v well-pleased_n with_o we_o no_o soon_o do_v sorrow_n and_o grief_n overspread_v our_o face_n but_o favour_n and_o smile_n clear_v up_o his_o face_n to_o we_o see_v this_o gracious_a disposition_n of_o god_n in_o jerem._n 31.20_o ephraim_n be_v there_o bring_v in_o bewail_v his_o sin_n sure_o say_v he_o after_o i_o be_v turn_v i_o repent_v after_o i_o be_v instruct_v i_o smite_v upon_o my_o thigh_n i_o be_v ashamed_a yea_o even_o confound_v because_o i_o do_v bear_v the_o reproach_n of_o my_o youth_n now_o when_o he_o pardon_v sin_n make_v it_o as_o if_o it_o have_v never_o be_v commit_v against_o he_o righteous_a remission_n of_o sin_n make_v god_n account_v of_o we_o as_o just_a and_o righteous_a three_o hence_o it_o follow_v that_o upon_o remission_n of_o sin_n god_n no_o long_a account_n of_o we_o as_o sinner_n but_o as_o just_a and_o righteous_a it_o be_v true_a after_o a_o pardon_n be_v receive_v we_o still_o retain_v sinful_a nature_n still_o original_a corruption_n be_v in_o we_o and_o will_v never_o total_o be_v dis-lodged_n out_o of_o we_o in_o this_o life_n but_o when_o god_n pardon_v we_o he_o look_v not_o upon_o we_o as_o sinner_n but_o as_o just_a and_o righteous_a a_o malefactor_n that_o be_v discharge_v by_o satisfy_v the_o law_n or_o by_o the_o prince_n favour_n to_o he_o be_v no_o more_o look_v upon_o as_o a_o malefactor_n but_o as_o just_a and_o righteous_a as_o if_o he_o have_v never_o offend_v the_o law_n at_o all_o so_o be_v it_o here_o
