this_o inward_a flesh_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n which_o answer_v to_o it_o after_o the_o same_o manner_n by_o way_n of_o analogy_n and_o this_o be_v most_o agreeable_a to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n concern_v this_o matter_n for_o as_o without_o outward_a food_n the_o natural_a body_n have_v not_o life_n so_o also_o say_v christ_n except_o you_o eat_v the_o flesh_n of_o the_o son_n of_o how_o strange_o be_v they_o pinch_v pain_a and_o straighten_a to_o make_v this_o spiritual_a mystery_n agree_v to_o that_o ceremony_n and_o what_o monstruous_a and_o wild_a opinion_n and_o conceiving_n have_v they_o invent_v to_o enclose_v or_o affix_v the_o body_n of_o christ_n to_o their_o bread_n and_o wine_n from_o which_o opinion_n not_o only_o the_o great_a and_o fierce_a and_o most_o hurtful_a contest_v both_o among_o the_o professor_n of_o christianity_n in_o general_n and_o among_o protestant_n in_o particular_a have_v arisen_a but_o also_o such_o absurdity_n irrational_a and_o blasphemous_a
carnal_a ordinance_n no_o wonder_n if_o by_o their_o carnal_a apprehension_n they_o run_v into_o heap_n and_o confusion_n but_o because_o it_o have_v be_v general_o suppose_v that_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n have_v some_o special_a relation_n to_o the_o ceremony_n of_o break_v bread_n i_o first_o refute_v that_o opinion_n and_o then_o proceed_v to_o consider_v the_o nature_n and_o use_n of_o that_o ceremony_n and_o whether_o it_o be_v now_o necessary_a to_o continue_v answer_v the_o reason_n and_o objection_n of_o such_o as_o plead_v its_o continuance_n as_o a_o necessary_a and_o stand_a ordinance_n of_o jesus_n christ._n §_o v._o first_o it_o must_v be_v understand_v that_o i_o speak_v of_o a_o necessary_a and_o peculiar_a relation_n otherwise_o than_o in_o a_o general_a respect_n for_o forasmuch_o as_o our_o communion_n with_o christ_n be_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v our_o great_a and_o chief_a work_n we_o ought_v to_o do_v all_o other_o thing_n with_o a_o respect_n to_o god_n and_o our_o fellowship_n with_o he_o but_o a_o special_a and_o necessary_a respect_n or_o relation_n be_v such_o as_o where_o the_o two_o thing_n be_v so_o tie_v and_o unite_v together_o either_o of_o their_o own_o nature_n or_o by_o the_o command_n of_o god_n that_o the_o one_o can_v be_v enjoy_v or_o at_o lest_o be_v not_o except_o very_o extraordinary_o without_o the_o other_o thus_o salvation_n have_v a_o necessary_a respect_n to_o holiness_n because_o without_o holiness_n no_o man_n shall_v see_v god_n and_o the_o eat_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n have_v a_o necessary_a respect_n to_o our_o have_a life_n because_o if_o we_o eat_v not_o his_o flesh_n and_o drink_v not_o his_o blood_n we_o can_v have_v life_n our_o feel_n of_o god_n presence_n have_v a_o necessary_a respect_n to_o our_o be_v find_v meet_v in_o his_o name_n by_o divine_a precept_n because_o he_o have_v promise_v where_o two_o or_o three_o be_v meet_v together_o in_o his_o name_n he_o will_v be_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o they_o in_o like_a manner_n our_o receive_a benefit_n and_o blessing_n from_o god_n have_v a_o necessary_a respect_n to_o our_o pray_v because_o if_o we_o ask_v he_o have_v promise_v we_o shall_v receive_v now_o the_o communion_n or_o participation_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n have_v no_o such_o necessary_a relation_n to_o the_o break_n of_o bread_n and_o drink_n of_o wine_n for_o if_o it_o have_v any_o such_o necessary_a relation_n it_o will_v either_o be_v from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n or_o from_o some_o divine_a precept_n but_o we_o shall_v show_v it_o be_v from_o neither_o therefore_o etc._n etc._n first_o it_o be_v not_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o because_o to_o be_v the_o end_n of_o it_o and_o can_v not_o have_v be_v attain_v without_o this_o participation_n but_o on_o the_o contrary_a we_o may_v well_o infer_v hence_o that_o since_o the_o positive_a end_n of_o this_o ceremony_n be_v not_o the_o partake_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n and_o that_o whoever_o partake_v of_o the_o flesh_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n can_v but_o remember_v as_o to_o uncover_v our_o head_n and_o bow_v our_o body_n nor_o do_v our_o innocent_a practice_n in_o stand_v still_o though_o upright_o not_o put_v off_o our_o hat_n any_o more_o than_o our_o shoe_n the_o one_o be_v the_o cover_n of_o our_o head_n as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o of_o our_o foot_n show_v so_o much_o rudeness_n as_o their_o beat_n or_o knock_v we_o etc._n etc._n because_o we_o can_v far_o from_o we_o to_o judge_v all_o those_o to_o who_o god_n have_v not_o show_v the_o evil_a of_o they_o under_o the_o like_a hazard_n yet_o nevertheless_o we_o doubt_v not_o but_o to_o such_o as_o concern_v this_o point_n and_o indeed_o if_o all_o be_v true_o mind_v that_o which_o justify_v there_o will_v be_v less_o noise_n about_o the_o notion_n of_o justification_n i_o shall_v brief_o review_v this_o controversy_n as_o it_o stand_v among_o other_o and_o as_o i_o have_v often_o serious_o observe_v it_o then_o in_o short_a state_n the_o controversy_n as_o to_o we_o and_o open_v our_o matter_n only_o as_o if_o they_o be_v propagater_n and_o pleader_n for_o good_a work_n by_o the_o other_o deny_v yet_o if_o we_o look_v to_o the_o effect_n of_o this_o doctrine_n among_o they_o as_o they_o appear_v in_o the_o generality_n of_o their_o church-member_n not_o in_o thing_n disapprove_v but_o high_o approve_v and_o commend_v by_o their_o father_n the_o pope_n and_o all_o his_o client_n as_o the_o most_o beneficial_a casuality_n of_o all_o his_o revenue_n we_o shall_v find_v that_o luther_n do_v not_o without_o great_a ground_n oppose_v himself_o to_o they_o in_o this_o matter_n and_o if_o he_o have_v not_o himself_o run_v into_o another_o extreme_a of_o which_o hereafter_o his_o work_n will_v have_v stand_v the_o better_a for_o in_o this_o as_o in_o most_o other_o even_o some_o good_a man_n among_o they_o may_v have_v think_v experience_n show_v and_o it_o be_v more_o than_o manifest_a by_o the_o universal_a and_o approve_a practice_n of_o their_o people_n that_o they_o place_v not_o their_o justification_n so_o much_o in_o work_n that_o be_v true_o and_o moral_o good_a and_o in_o the_o be_v true_o renew_v and_o sanctify_v in_o the_o mind_n as_o in_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v either_o not_o good_a nor_o evil_a or_o may_v true_o be_v call_v evil_a and_o can_v no_o otherways_o be_v reckon_v good_a than_o because_o the_o pope_n please_v to_o call_v sacrament_n which_o they_o say_v confer_v grace_n ex_fw-la opere_fw-la operato_fw-la so_o that_o if_o a_o man_n partake_v but_o of_o they_o he_o thereby_o obtain_v remission_n of_o sin_n though_o he_o remain_v as_o he_o be_v the_o virtue_n of_o the_o sacrament_n make_v up_o the_o want_n that_o be_v in_o the_o man_n so_o that_o this_o act_n of_o submission_n and_o faith_n to_o the_o law_n of_o the_o without_o good_a work_n moreover_o though_o it_o be_v not_o so_o safe_a to_o say_v they_o be_v meritorious_a yet_o see_v they_o be_v reward_v many_o of_o those_o call_v the_o father_n have_v not_o spare_v to_o use_v the_o word_n merit_n which_o some_o of_o we_o have_v perhaps_o also_o do_v in_o a_o qualify_a sense_n but_o no_o way_n to_o infer_v the_o popish_a abuse_n above_o mention_v and_o last_o if_o we_o have_v that_o notion_n of_o good_a work_n which_o most_o protestant_n have_v we_o can_v free_o agree_v to_o make_v they_o not_o only_o not_o necessary_a but_o reject_v they_o as_o hurtful_a viz._n that_o the_o best_a work_n even_o of_o the_o saint_n be_v defile_v and_o pollute_v for_o though_o we_o judge_v so_o of_o the_o best_a work_n perform_v by_o man_n endeavour_v a_o conformity_n to_o the_o outward_a law_n by_o his_o own_o strength_n and_o in_o his_o own_o will_n yet_o we_o believe_v that_o such_o work_n as_o natural_o proceed_v from_o this_o spiritual_a birth_n and_o formation_n of_o christ_n in_o we_o be_v pure_a and_o holy_a even_o as_o the_o root_n from_o which_o they_o come_v and_o therefore_o god_n accept_v they_o justify_v we_o in_o they_o and_o reward_v we_o for_o they_o of_o his_o own_o free_a grace_n the_o state_n of_o the_o controversy_n be_v thus_o state_v these_o follow_a position_n do_v hence_o from_o arise_v in_o the_o next_o place_n to_o be_v prove_v §_o iv._o first_o that_o the_o obedience_n suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n be_v that_o by_o which_o the_o soul_n obtain_v remission_n of_o sin_n and_o be_v the_o procure_a cause_n of_o that_o grace_n by_o who_o inward_a work_n christ_n come_v to_o be_v form_v inward_o and_o the_o soul_n to_o be_v make_v conformable_a unto_o he_o and_o so_o just_a and_o justify_v and_o that_o therefore_o in_o respect_n of_o this_o capacity_n and_o offer_n of_o grace_n god_n be_v say_v to_o be_v reconcile_v not_o as_o if_o he_o be_v actual_o reconcile_v or_o do_v actual_o justify_v or_o account_v any_o just_a so_o long_o as_o they_o remain_v in_o their_o sin_n real_o impure_a and_o unjust_a second_o that_o it_o be_v by_o this_o inward_a birth_n of_o christ_n in_o man_n that_o
