be_v five_o if_o every_o part_n of_o man_n substance_n shall_v be_v sinful_a than_o it_o follow_v that_o the_o hair_n upon_o our_o head_n be_v even_o infect_v with_o it_o and_o much_o more_o such_o abortive_n as_o perish_v before_o the_o soul_n infusion_n and_o consequent_o must_v all_o rise_v at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n again_o to_o suffer_v without_o christ_n sarisfaction_n infinite_a punishment_n none_o therefore_o be_v to_o be_v account_v sinful_a but_o only_o that_o

8._o everyman_n two_o father_n or_o none_o furthermore_o as_o man_n can_v have_v no_o child_n this_o way_n so_o child_n can_v have_v no_o father_n or_o else_o every_o one_o two_o father_n for_o if_o the_o soul_n come_v from_o god_n who_o be_v a_o man_n father_n the_o whole_a man_n i_o mean_v not_o adam_n for_o he_o be_v the_o father_n of_o our_o body_n only_o nor_o god_n for_o our_o soul_n only_o come_v from_o he_o if_o then_o neither_o god_n nor_o adam_n be_v our_o father_n who_o son_n i_o beseech_v you_o be_v we_o by_o this_o doctrine_n he_o be_v a_o wise_a child_n that_o know_v his_o own_o father_n perhaps_o it_o will_v be_v say_v we_o be_v the_o son_n of_o both_o but_o then_o every_o one_o must_v have_v two_o father_n a_o infinite_a and_o a_o finite_a father_n oh_o strange_a absurdity_n and_o no_o less_o ridiculous_a than_o impossible_a for_o how_o can_v both_o be_v when_o by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n neither_o can_n to_o be_v short_a either_o they_o must_v make_v god_n and_o adam_n both_o one_o or_o else_o every_o child_n must_v have_v two_o father_n or_o none_o at_o all_o parent_n 9_o child_n like_o their_o parent_n neither_o be_v it_o without_o force_n that_o child_n be_v ordinary_o like_o their_o parent_n and_o not_o only_o in_o the_o feature_n of_o the_o body_n but_o in_o the_o faculty_n of_o the_o mind_n also_o now_o though_o all_o soul_n be_v essential_o alike_o and_o this_o be_v not_o always_o true_a neither_o in_o soul_n nor_o body_n for_o divers_a reason_n yet_o since_o it_o be_v true_a in_o both_o for_o the_o most_o part_n it_o appear_v that_o the_o parent_n have_v more_o in_o generation_n than_o the_o body_n yea_o so_o much_o as_o the_o whole_a man_n be_v ordinary_o like_o the_o parent_n so_o much_o be_v the_o whole_a man_n propagate_v from_o he_o chap._n xxvii_o reason_n from_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n soul_n everyman_n must_v have_v two_o soul_n neither_o be_v this_o kind_n of_o propagation_n more_o agreeable_a to_o the_o ordinary_a course_n of_o generation_n than_o to_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n itself_o nor_o that_o of_o the_o immediate_a creation_n more_o contrary_a to_o the_o one_o than_o the_o other_o for_o first_o as_o by_o that_o doctrine_n every_o one_o must_v have_v two_o father_n or_o none_o so_o also_o two_o soul_n for_o if_o the_o rational_a soul_n be_v infuse_v by_o god_n after_o the_o perfect_a of_o the_o vegetative_a and_o sensitive_a soul_n as_o they_o be_v call_v though_o in_o truth_n both_o be_v perform_v by_o one_o soul_n as_o we_o see_v in_o beast_n i_o will_v know_v what_o soul_n it_o be_v that_o do_v inform_v and_o shape_v the_o fruit_n before_o give_v it_o vegetation_n and_o sense_n these_o thing_n can_v possible_o be_v do_v without_o of_o soul_n which_o if_o it_o be_v not_o the_o rational_a be_v some_o other_o unreasonable_a soul_n such_o as_o be_v in_o beast_n and_o so_o every_o man_n must_v have_v two_o soul_n for_o we_o see_v by_o experience_n the_o former_a do_v not_o perish_v at_o the_o come_n of_o the_o latter_a as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o form_n of_o corporeal_a substance_n when_o one_o perish_v than_o another_o succeed_v but_o here_o both_o remain_v and_o therefore_o either_o must_v be_v mingle_v and_o make_v one_o with_o the_o reasonable_a school_n which_o can_v be_v unless_o it_o be_v corruptible_a or_o else_o every_o man_n must_v have_v two_o soul_n one_o reasonable_a and_o another_o unreasonable_a which_o opinion_n be_v very_o as_o far_o from_o reason_n as_o the_o soul_n be_v from_o be_v unreasonable_a again_o 2._o 2._o the_o soul_n be_v a_o essential_a part_n of_o man_n man_n the_o soul_n the_o chief_a part_n of_o man_n and_o the_o very_a form_n of_o man_n without_o which_o man_n be_v not_o man_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v against_o nature_n and_o contrary_a to_o all_o reason_n that_o man_n by_o the_o course_n of_o nature_n propagate_a a_o creature_n like_o himself_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o propagate_v such_o a_o essential_a part_n as_o the_o soul_n be_v especial_o see_v it_o be_v grant_v he_o can_v propagate_v such_o a_o accident_n as_o sin_n be_v yea_o how_o can_v this_o doctrine_n possible_o be_v true_a that_o man_n shall_v propagate_v that_o which_o be_v unnatural_a &_o not_o that_o which_o be_v natural_a a_o unnatural_a accident_n and_o not_o a_o natural_a essential_a part_n sin_o which_o can_v be_v without_o the_o soul_n and_o not_o the_o soul_n without_o which_o there_o can_v be_v no_o sin_n spirit_n 3_o the_o soul_n compare_v with_o other_o spirit_n this_o also_o will_v far_o appear_v if_o we_o compare_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n with_o other_o spirit_n for_o it_o be_v observe_v by_o the_o learned_a and_o manifest_v even_o to_o the_o ignorant_a that_o god_n have_v create_v three_o sort_n of_o spirit_n in_o the_o world_n first_o angel_n which_o be_v so_o spiritual_a that_o they_o can_v be_v join_v with_o body_n second_o the_o spirit_n of_o beast_n etc._n etc._n which_o be_v so_o corporal_a that_o they_o can_v be_v separate_v from_o body_n three_o mens_fw-la soul_n as_o a_o mean_v which_o can_v both_o live_v without_o body_n as_o after_o death_n like_o angel_n and_o unite_v with_o body_n as_o in_o this_o life_n like_o beast_n again_o we_o see_v it_o be_v the_o will_n and_o ordinance_n of_o god_n that_o angel_n shall_v neither_o increase_v nor_o decrease_v corporal_a spirit_n as_o i_o may_v call_v they_o both_o increase_n and_o decrease_v and_o that_o soul_n shall_v increase_v and_o multiply_v but_o never_o decrease_v or_o perish_v do_v not_o then_o the_o order_n of_o nature_n teach_v then_o that_o as_o angel_n eat_v immediate_o create_v by_o god_n only_o and_o the_o spirit_n of_o beast_n altogether_o mediate_o propagate_v so_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n which_o be_v the_o mean_a betwixt_o both_o shall_v be_v produce_v partly_o by_o the_o immediate_a power_n of_o god_n and_o partly_o mediate_o by_o propagation_n or_o rather_o by_o such_o a_o manner_n of_o production_n as_o be_v even_o a_o mean_a between_o creation_n and_o propagation_n it_o be_v to_o disturb_v the_o order_n of_o nature_n to_o confound_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o to_o make_v a_o mingle-mangle_a of_o the_o orderly_a work_n of_o god_n to_o deny_v it_o itself_o 4._o the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n itself_o and_o this_o be_v no_o less_o apparent_a if_o we_o consider_v the_o nature_n of_o the_o foul_a alone_a then_o compare_v with_o other_o for_o it_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v the_o low_a nature_n of_o all_o incorporeal_a spirit_n endue_v with_o power_n to_o use_v the_o bodily_a organ_n to_o those_o purpose_n whereunto_o they_o be_v ordain_v by_o nature_n but_o chief_o by_o its_o rational_a faculty_n to_o get_v knowledge_n of_o all_o sensible_a thing_n which_o sense_n arâ—_n 〈◊〉_d proportion_v by_o god_n that_o the_o reasonable_a soul_n by_o they_o get_v all_o its_o natural_a knowledge_n yeâ—_n even_o end_n and_o use_v of_o it_o be_v in_o all_o thing_n natural_o to_o work_v mediate_o by_o the_o body_n for_o the_o soul_n be_v not_o such_o a_o strange_a nature_n dwell_v in_o the_o body_n miraculous_o as_o some_o imagine_v but_o love_o unite_v by_o a_o sweet_a union_n and_o fit_a concordance_n in_o nature_n and_o therefore_o without_o question_n as_o the_o nature_n use_n end_n and_o all_o ordinary_a faculty_n and_o work_n be_v natural_o and_o mediate_o by_o these_o corporal_a nature_n so_o also_o be_v the_o original_n and_o can_v not_o otherwise_o have_v such_o union_n and_o sympathy_n with_o the_o body_n but_o yet_o as_o the_o nature_n and_o work_n also_o be_v some_o way_n extraordinary_a without_o and_o above_o all_o elementary_a nature_n so_o proportionable_o thereunto_o god_n have_v a_o extraordinary_a and_o supernatural_a work_n in_o produce_v of_o it_o soul_n 5._o the_o faculty_n of_o propagation_n seat_v in_o the_o soul_n another_o reason_n that_o the_o soul_n be_v propagate_v may_v be_v because_o the_o faculty_n of_o propagation_n belong_v as_o well_o to_o the_o soul_n as_o the_o body_n yea_o have_v original_o the_o chief_a seat_n in_o the_o soul_n only_o for_o the_o body_n alone_o be_v but_o a_o dead_a instrument_n as_o the_o pen_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o writer_n and_o therefore_o must_v needs_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o first_o principle_n and_o principal_a cause_n of_o all_o action_n unless_o we_o shall_v grant_v more_o soul_n than_o one_o and_o disturb_v yea_o destroy_v the_o uniform_a government_n of_o nature_n by_o place_v divers_a commander_n in_o one_o body_n now_o if_o the_o soul_n have_v a_o part_n yea_o the_o chief_a power_n in_o propagation_n it_o be_v most_o absurd_a to_o say_v that_o all_o be_v spend_v in_o the_o produce_v of_o i_o know_v not_o what_o brutish_a thing_n which_o be_v neither_o nan_n not_o beast_n and_o see_v according_a to_o the_o rule_n of_o reason_n such_o as_o the_o cause_n be_v such_o also_o be_v the_o effect_n how_o can_v it_o be_v but_o the_o soul_n must_v produce_v a_o soul_n and_o consequent_o the_o whole_a man_n the_o whole_a man_n conception_n 6._o the_o soul_n present_a in_o conception_n add_v hereunto_o that_o the_o soul_n do_v accompany_v the_o seed_n and_o perfect_v the_o body_n from_o the_o very_a first_o conception_n which_o not_o only_o the_o ancient_a philosopher_n acknowledge_v as_o most_o agreeable_a to_o nature_n and_o reason_n whence_o it_o be_v that_o nothing_o be_v more_o common_a with_o aristotle_n 3._o arist_n deâ—_n gen_fw-la anim_fw-la l._n 1._o cap._n 3._o than_o that_o the_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o the_o seed_n make_v its_o own_o house_n fit_o frame_v the_o bodily_a organ_n and_o bring_v they_o to_o the_o high_a perfection_n that_o the_o first_o constitution_n of_o the_o matter_n be_v capable_a of_o but_o even_o among_o our_o modern_a philosopher_n and_o divine_n it_o be_v acknowledge_v for_o such_o effect_n can_v be_v do_v without_o a_o soul_n as_o the_o most_o acute_a scaliger_n abundant_o prove_v 5._o scal._n exerc_n 6._o sect._n 5._o and_o if_o the_o soul_n inform_v the_o seed_n at_o the_o very_a instant_n of_o perfection_n when_o there_o be_v as_o yet_o no_o organ_n be_v it_o not_o more_o probable_a that_o it_o be_v mediate_o propagate_v with_o the_o seed_n than_o immediate_o create_v by_o god_n yes_o doubtless_o neither_o need_v any_o doubt_n how_o the_o rational_a soul_n can_v 〈◊〉_d the_o seed_n without_o organ_n know_v that_o the_o chief_a yea_o the_o only_a immediate_a organ_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v the_o spirit_n and_o these_o be_v as_o well_o in_o the_o seed_n as_o in_o the_o most_o perfect_a body_n embryo_n the_o soul_n work_v in_o the_o embryo_n although_o therefore_o there_o be_v as_o yet_o no_o eye_n or_o ear_n for_o the_o soul_n to_o hear_v or_o see_v with_o yet_o there_o be_v work_n enough_o for_o it_o to_o heat_n and_o cool_v moisten_v and_o dry_v and_o thereby_o to_o separate_v and_o conjoin_v to_o thicken_v and_o thin_a to_o extend_v and_o contract_v to_o make_v rough_a and_o smooth_a to_o harden_v and_o soften_v these_o and_o such_o other_o be_v the_o work_n of_o the_o soul_n whereby_o it_o do_v ordain_v place_n number_n and_o form_v the_o seed_n for_o though_o they_o be_v the_o prime_n and_o secondary_a quality_n of_o the_o element_n yet_o in_o such_o a_o natural_a body_n all_o be_v doâ—â—_n by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o none_o of_o all_o can_v be_v do_v without_o it_o cause_n 7._o god_n the_o efficient_a cause_n last_o it_o appear_v that_o not_o nature_n but_o god_n be_v the_o efficient_a cause_n of_o the_o soul_n procreation_n because_o even_o elementary_a body_n can_v be_v produce_v without_o a_o more_o excellent_a efficient_a than_o themselves_o for_o we_o see_v that_o all_o natural_a thing_n yea_o every_o plant_n that_o grow_v out_o of_o the_o earth_n beside_o the_o material_a cause_n the_o element_n whereof_o it_o be_v compound_v and_o the_o seed_n whence_o it_o receive_v the_o form_n have_v also_o a_o external_a efficient_a cause_n which_o certain_o be_v the_o influence_n of_o the_o celestial_a orb_n who_o by_o cause_v motion_n give_v it_o the_o first_o hint_n and_o power_n of_o grow_v and_o see_v the_o soul_n have_v such_o similitude_n with_o these_o corporal_a nature_n that_o though_o they_o have_v not_o matter_n and_o form_n as_o they_o have_v yet_o have_v a_o spiritual_a kind_n of_o composition_n which_o for_o likeness_n just_o merit_v the_o name_n therefore_o as_o the_o spiritual_a matter_n and_o form_n thereof_o be_v propagate_v from_o the_o parent_n by_o the_o seed_n so_o it_o must_v also_o have_v a_o spiritual_a external_a efficient_a cause_n more_o excellent_a than_o itself_o which_o can_v be_v no_o other_o but_o the_o immediate_a power_n of_o god_n the_o father_n of_o spirit_n for_o as_o all_o natural_a body_n have_v a_o efficient_a cause_n correspondent_a to_o their_o nature_n which_o in_o course_n of_o nature_n can_v be_v good_a immediate_o with_o who_o nature_n they_o have_v so_o small_a affinity_n yea_o so_o great_a contrariety_n but_o these_o heavenly_a power_n with_o who_o they_o have_v such_o sympathy_n be_v of_o the_o same_o corporal_a nature_n though_o of_o a_o more_o excellent_a temper_n so_o the_o efficient_a cause_n of_o our_o soul_n must_v needs_o be_v agreeable_a to_o their_o nature_n which_o can_v be_v the_o star_n which_o be_v far_o inferior_a but_o god_n who_o be_v also_o a_o spirit_n and_o of_o a_o more_o excellent_a nature_n than_o our_o spirit_n even_o as_o the_o sun_n be_v more_o glorious_a than_o these_o earthly_a substance_n between_o who_o there_o be_v such_o sympathy_n that_o even_o as_o plant_n welke_o and_o fade_v without_o the_o force_n of_o their_o efficient_n that_o heavenly_a lamp_n the_o sun_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o those_o celestial_a orb_n but_o grow_v and_o flourish_v with_o they_o so_o how_o a_o soul_n separate_v from_o god_n and_o one_o unite_a unto_o he_o and_o enjoy_v the_o beam_n of_o his_o grace_n be_v either_o miserable_a or_o happy_a we_o know_v in_o part_n but_o can_v perfect_o comprehend_v chap._n xxviii_o reason_n from_o other_o consideration_n conception_n rareness_n of_o humane_a conception_n beside_o these_o argument_n take_v from_o the_o ordinary_a course_n of_o generation_n and_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n divers_a other_o probable_a reason_n may_v be_v produce_v as_o first_o the_o often_o fail_v and_o indeed_o rareness_n of_o humane_a conception_n in_o comparison_n of_o other_o creature_n as_o common_a experience_n teach_v now_o if_o the_o soul_n be_v create_v after_o the_o perfect_a of_o the_o body_n than_o the_o first_o conception_n and_o breed_n be_v by_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n only_o why_o shall_v there_o not_o be_v as_o much_o frequency_n and_o certainty_n in_o the_o propagation_n of_o mankind_n as_o of_o other_o creature_n this_o rareness_n of_o humane_a conception_n do_v intimate_v unto_o we_o that_o it_o be_v not_o by_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n alone_o that_o man_n be_v conceive_v in_o the_o womb_n but_o that_o there_o be_v some_o more_o special_a work_n of_o god_n in_o it_o than_o in_o the_o generation_n of_o other_o creature_n and_o if_o it_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o god_n have_v such_o a_o special_a work_n in_o the_o conception_n of_o man_n why_o shall_v we_o not_o think_v that_o the_o soul_n have_v its_o beginning_n then_o also_o rather_o than_o with_o reverence_n be_v it_o speak_v to_o put_v god_n to_o a_o double_a labour_n and_o to_o set_v he_o twice_o on_o work_n in_o every_o man_n generation_n nature_n 2._o god_n shall_v be_v tie_v to_o nature_n and_o this_o may_v far_o appear_v not_o only_o by_o testimony_n of_o scripture_n which_o make_v conception_n to_o be_v a_o special_a work_n of_o god_n and_o never_o mention_v any_o extraordinary_a power_n in_o the_o
right_a therein_o proceed_v we_o now_o to_o their_o title_n and_o so_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o find_v out_o the_o truth_n in_o this_o most_o intricate_a question_n viz._n whether_o the_o soul_n be_v natural_o propagate_v from_o adam_n or_o supernatural_o create_v by_o god_n generate_v not_o generate_v if_o we_o say_v the_o first_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v generate_v of_o the_o soul_n or_o of_o the_o body_n if_o of_o the_o body_n than_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o it_o be_v by_o nature_n corruptible_a and_o so_o not_o immortal_a and_o if_o we_o say_v it_o be_v spiritual_o produce_v of_o the_o soul_n that_o seem_v contrary_a to_o reason_n unless_o we_o shall_v overthrow_v the_o excellent_a nature_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o if_o it_o be_v a_o spiritual_a and_o immaterial_a substance_n indivisible_o subsist_v by_o itself_o how_o can_v it_o be_v that_o one_o shall_v engender_v another_o beside_o many_o other_o inconvenience_n will_v follow_v thereupon_o as_o afterward_o we_o shall_v see_v create_v not_o create_v now_o if_o on_o the_o other_o side_n we_o say_v that_o they_o be_v daily_o create_v by_o god_n of_o nothing_o beside_o the_o opposition_n that_o this_o have_v to_o god_n first_o institution_n of_o nature_n whereby_o all_o thing_n be_v settle_v in_o a_o course_n to_o increase_v and_o multiply_v of_o themselves_o and_o god_n have_v rest_v from_o the_o work_n of_o creation_n ever_o since_o it_o be_v no_o less_o opposite_a to_o divinity_n for_o if_o this_o be_v true_a it_o can_v be_v conceive_v how_o there_o can_v be_v any_o original_a sin_n without_o impeachment_n to_o god_n justice_n ancient_n original_a sin_n deny_v by_o some_o of_o the_o ancient_n whenee_n it_o be_v that_o not_o only_o the_o old_a anabaptist_n the_o pelagian_o and_o our_o new_a pelagian_n the_o anabaptist_n hold_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v immediate_o create_v by_o god_n deny_v that_o there_o be_v any_o original_a sin_n otherwise_o then_o by_o imitation_n but_o even_o divers_a of_o the_o ancient_a father_n seem_v to_o be_v of_o the_o same_o mind_n and_o not_o only_a hierome_n and_o chrysostome_n 1._o zan._n de_fw-fr operibus_fw-la par_fw-fr 3._o li._n 2._o c._n 5._o thes_n 1._o but_o as_o zanchy_a wintness_v this_o be_v the_o chief_a reason_n that_o move_v the_o chief_a divine_n and_o most_o famous_a doctor_n of_o those_o time_n to_o choose_v rather_o to_o hold_v the_o propagation_n of_o the_o soul_n than_o to_o fall_v into_o so_o many_o absurdity_n as_o follow_v upon_o â—he_n former_a doctrine_n and_o as_o â—hey_n can_v not_o see_v how_o these_o two_o can_v stand_v together_o so_o neither_o can_v i_o see_v how_o it_o can_v be_v see_v divine_n not_o clear_v by_o our_o modern_a divine_n nay_o i_o dare_v say_v far_o themselves_z that_o hold_v this_o
