that_o we_o may_v by_o the_o divine_a assistance_n attain_v to_o such_o exactness_n as_o to_o do_v that_o which_o be_v real_o good_n though_o it_o will_v not_o be_v perfect_o yet_o it_o be_v true_o so_o nay_o and_o by_o degree_n we_o shall_v be_v go_v on_o towards_o the_o great_a perfection_n as_o both_o yourselves_o and_o every_o one_o experience_n testify_v 2._o there_o be_v great_a necessity_n of_o our_o take_a heed_n to_o be_v exact_a lest_o if_o we_o be_v not_o we_o shall_v do_v ill_a for_o 1._o vice_n do_v so_o border_n upon_o virtue_n that_o it_o be_v not_o very_o easy_a to_o discern_v the_o boundary_n and_o the_o passage_n from_o good_a to_o bad_a be_v so_o short_a and_o facile_a that_o without_o good_a care_n and_o caution_n it_o will_v not_o be_v prevent_v it_o be_v a_o matter_n of_o some_o difficulty_n to_o set_v the_o limit_n to_o each_o in_o speculation_n and_o in_o general_n and_o it_o be_v still_a hard_o to_o do_v this_o in_o particular_a and_o a_o far_a work_n yet_o to_o keep_v within_o the_o bound_n we_o understand_v especial_o when_o these_o be_v variable_a and_o can_v be_v set_v without_o a_o respect_n to_o very_o alterable_a accident_n and_o such_o circumstance_n as_o be_v hardly_o discernible_a e._n g._n in_o the_o case_n of_o temperance_n who_o can_v say_v thus_o far_o it_o go_v and_o no_o far_o thus_o much_o a_o man_n may_v eat_v or_o drink_v but_o not_o a_o jot_n more_o all_o will_v grant_v this_o be_v not_o to_o be_v define_v in_o general_a nor_o that_o the_o same_o quantity_n be_v to_o be_v allow_v to_o every_o one_o for_o one_o will_v be_v starve_v another_o drink_v so_o then_o every_o one_o must_v determine_v his_o own_o proportion_n which_o to_o do_v true_o and_o wise_o he_o must_v be_v able_a to_o distinguish_v betwixt_o the_o desire_n of_o nature_n and_o those_o that_o arise_v from_o disease_n and_o he_o must_v always_o understand_v what_o be_v the_o good_a state_n or_o plight_n of_o his_o body_n in_o general_a and_o that_o be_v when_o it_o be_v most_o serviceable_a to_o the_o soul_n in_o all_o its_o capacity_n and_o in_o the_o do_v every_o work_n in_o which_o that_o shall_v employ_v it_o when_o it_o will_v not_o only_o be_v fit_a to_o serve_v the_o soul_n in_o some_o few_o but_o in_o all_o the_o business_n which_o shall_v be_v require_v of_o it_o and_o be_v not_o more_o helpful_a in_o one_o or_o some_o of_o the_o low_a whilst_o it_o prove_v a_o encumbrance_n and_o impediment_n in_o the_o high_o and_o great_a operation_n and_o this_o not_o only_o with_o respect_n to_o the_o present_a but_o to_o the_o long_a time_n now_o all_o this_o require_v both_o a_o good_a presence_n of_o mind_n and_o great_a exactness_n of_o thought_n it_o suppose_v observation_n and_o remembrance_n of_o what_o be_v past_a and_o a_o diligent_a calculate_v and_o exact_a weigh_v both_o of_o the_o state_n of_o his_o own_o body_n and_o also_o of_o his_o condition_n in_o the_o world_n nor_o must_v he_o only_o consider_v himself_o but_o other_o his_o wife_n and_o child_n and_o the_o poor_a for_o he_o that_o allow_v himself_o all_o that_o may_v conduce_v to_o the_o good_a plight_n of_o his_o own_o body_n without_o consideration_n of_o his_o family_n and_o kindred_n without_o regard_n to_o the_o urge_v necessity_n of_o poor_a stranger_n he_o be_v excessive_a in_o his_o self-gratification_n indeed_o whosoever_o consider_v how_o many_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v think_v of_o and_o compare_v before_o a_o man_n can_v wise_o determine_v himself_o to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o fit_a for_o he_o to_o do_v not_o only_o in_o this_o but_o in_o many_o other_o instance_n even_o all_o that_o he_o be_v to_o do_v in_o his_o whole_a life_n will_v easy_o grant_v that_o there_o be_v need_n of_o great_a care_n and_o exactness_n of_o great_a caution_n and_o circumspection_n on_o these_o and_o such_o like_a account_n how_o easy_a be_v it_o for_o a_o man_n to_o go_v beyond_o the_o bound_n of_o any_o virtue_n nay_o how_o hard_o be_v it_o not_o to_o do_v this_o when_o he_o intend_v temperance_n not_o to_o fall_v into_o a_o unreasonable_a unnatural_a denial_n of_o himself_o in_o those_o gratification_n which_o be_v not_o only_o allowable_a but_o commondable_a and_o lest_o he_o shall_v indulge_v himself_o in_o sensual_a excess_n he_o will_v obstain_v from_o those_o entertainment_n which_o be_v natural_a and_o innocent_a and_o if_o not_o necessary_a yet_o very_o convenient_a and_o useful_a again_o how_o hard_o be_v it_o not_o to_o slip_v out_o of_o a_o just_a indignation_n and_o displeasure_n at_o some_o miscarriage_n and_o offence_n into_o a_o immoderate_a over_o vehement_a anger_n and_o a_o unbecoming_a fury_n and_o rage_n how_o difficult_a be_v it_o to_o say_v thus_o far_o i_o may_v and_o shall_v he_o angry_a and_o beyond_o this_o i_o will_v not_o go_v and_o to_o keep_v to_o this_o resolution_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n whilst_o a_o man_n be_v but_o lay_v fit_a restraint_n on_o this_o passion_n how_o apt_a be_v he_o to_o fall_v into_o stupidity_n and_o a_o unactive_a dulness_n which_o have_v a_o semblance_n of_o mildness_n and_o neither_o be_v move_v in_o himself_o nor_o yet_o use_v that_o discipline_n to_o other_o which_o nature_n and_o justice_n require_v i_o may_v observe_v the_o same_o in_o all_o other_o virtue_n there_o be_v a_o great_a vicinity_n and_o nearness_n betwixt_o they_o and_o vice_n the_o heathen_a moralist_n have_v place_v almost_o all_o virtue_n in_o the_o midst_n between_o two_o vice_n and_o the_o difference_n they_o have_v make_v betwixt_o they_o be_v that_o one_o be_v a_o excess_n the_o other_o defect_n the_o one_o be_v more_o the_o other_o less_o than_o shall_v be_v so_o that_o according_a to_o this_o explication_n of_o it_o virtue_n do_v but_o differ_v gradual_o from_o viciocity_n and_o how_o exact_a must_v he_o be_v that_o will_v neither_o exceed_v nor_o be_v deficient_a do_v more_o nor_o less_o than_o what_o be_v fit_a man_n be_v sacrifice_v to_o vanity_n and_o throw_v away_o his_o money_n out_o of_o ostentation_n and_o a_o lavish_a humour_n he_o may_v think_v himself_o liberal_a and_o magnificent_a if_o he_o do_v not_o exact_o observe_v 2._o i_o may_v also_o persuade_v the_o same_o from_o the_o tendency_n there_o be_v in_o some_o good_a action_n to_o that_o which_o be_v very_o evil_a insomuch_o that_o if_o we_o do_v not_o set_v a_o very_a strict_a watch_n over_o ourselves_o we_o shall_v begin_v in_o a_o very_a good_a and_o commendable_a work_n but_o end_n in_o a_o very_a ill_a one_o we_o shall_v slip_v from_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o fit_a to_o that_o which_o be_v vicious_a and_o deform_a to_o give_v a_o instance_n or_o two_o this_o man_n set_v out_o in_o defence_n of_o some_o important_a truth_n that_o which_o either_o be_v or_o
the_o very_a fundamental_a law_n whereby_o god_n govern_v the_o world_n which_o be_v such_o as_o these_o viz._n that_o every_o man_n shall_v endeavour_v both_o his_o own_o and_o other_o preservation_n and_o perfection_n that_o he_o keep_v not_o only_a himself_o but_o other_o in_o that_o place_n and_o order_n which_o the_o great_a and_o wise_a creator_n have_v appoint_v they_o that_o thus_o do_v he_o carry_v on_o the_o same_o design_n which_o the_o maker_n and_o lord_n of_o all_o do_v most_o evident_o intend_v and_o prosecute_v as_o appear_v by_o the_o inclination_n and_o appetite_n which_o he_o have_v give_v all_o his_o creature_n and_o by_o the_o rank_n and_o order_n in_o which_o he_o have_v set_v they_o to_o and_o with_o each_o other_o he_o that_o know_v that_o not_o only_a himself_o but_o all_o live_a thing_n have_v these_o inclination_n and_o do_v natural_o desire_v their_o own_o pleasure_n and_o perfection_n and_o that_o they_o be_v all_o fit_v for_o the_o service_n of_o each_o other_o he_o will_v conclude_v that_o this_o be_v the_o will_n of_o he_o that_o make_v we_o all_o and_o be_v our_o common_a lord_n that_o we_o shall_v follow_v these_o inclination_n in_o ourselves_o and_o comply_v with_o they_o in_o other_o endeavour_v to_o preserve_v every_o be_v and_o the_o low_a life_n and_o not_o only_o so_o but_o to_o increase_v and_o perfect_v it_o as_o much_o as_o be_v consistent_a with_o the_o service_n and_o advancement_n of_o the_o high_a and_o best_a life_n which_o be_v the_o divine_a life_n of_o the_o mind_n which_o in_o this_o state_n depend_v on_o the_o life_n of_o the_o animal_n in_o we_o if_o it_o be_v think_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o we_o shall_v preserve_v ourselves_o because_o of_o that_o self-love_n that_o be_v natural_a to_o we_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n it_o must_v be_v think_v his_o will_n that_o other_o preserve_v themselves_o and_o if_o we_o oppose_v or_o hinder_v they_o that_o they_o can_v we_o resist_v god_n will._n if_o we_o do_v not_o what_o in_o we_o lie_v help_v they_o to_o do_v thus_o we_o do_v not_o his_o will_n universal_o he_o than_o that_o observe_v these_o thing_n will_v read_v the_o will_n of_o the_o world_n maker_n in_o most_o legible_a character_n such_o as_o have_v no_o obscurity_n but_o the_o most_o unlearned_a man_n in_o the_o world_n may_v run_v and_o read_v if_o it_o be_v here_o except_v that_o sometime_o these_o inclination_n clash_n they_o can_v all_o be_v gratify_v and_o that_o nature_n scholar_n have_v no_o direction_n in_o this_o case_n here_o be_v several_a thing_n which_o god_n will_v but_o what_o shall_v be_v do_v where_o there_o be_v a_o competition_n i_o answer_v that_o which_o every_o man_n reason_n will_v direct_v he_o 1._o be_v sure_a there_o be_v a_o contrariety_n betwixt_o a_o inconsistency_n of_o these_o natural_a inclination_n with_o each_o other_o that_o the_o same_o live_a creature_n man_n himself_o can_v be_v preserve_v and_o continue_v as_o it_o be_v if_o he_o become_v serviceable_a to_o the_o public_a if_o these_o can_v both_o be_v let_v they_o if_o they_o can_v 2._o let_v it_o be_v in_o this_o as_o in_o all_o other_o case_n it_o be_v let_v the_o superior_a dispose_n of_o the_o inferior_a as_o may_v best_o promote_v the_o most_o public_a last_a great_a good_n thus_o we_o see_v a_o grain_n of_o corn_n which_o in_o a_o close_a granary_n may_v be_v keep_v entire_a for_o which_o state_n one_o will_v think_v it_o be_v make_v be_v so_o whole_a and_o one_o in_o itself_o but_o yet_o it_o be_v by_o the_o skilful_a husbandman_n throw_v into_o the_o ground_n where_o it_o rot_v and_o die_v as_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o a_o little_a time_n and_o so_o the_o grain_n seem_v lose_v but_o yet_o afterward_o it_o sprout_n and_o multiply_v itself_o into_o abundance_n perhaps_o sixty_o or_o a_o hundred_o this_o may_v teach_v we_o not_o to_o be_v so_o careful_a of_o our_o own_o particular_a being_n when_o by_o the_o give_v they_o up_o we_o may_v do_v a_o far_o great_a good_a again_o by_o nature_n as_o i_o have_v say_v we_o be_v incline_v to_o seek_v after_o pleasure_n but_o yet_o by_o nature_n also_o i._n e._n by_o brute_n animal_n that_o seem_v to_o regard_v only_o what_o be_v present_a we_o be_v instruct_v to_o lay_v aside_o our_o pleasure_n when_o by_o that_o we_o may_v procure_v some_o better_a or_o more_o last_v or_o publick-good_a than_o that_o our_o pleasure_n will_v be_v so_o do_v the_o old_a bird_n abstain_v from_o abundance_n of_o particular_a gratification_n to_o hatch_v and_o feed_v their_o young_a that_o be_v they_o be_v more_o please_v with_o a_o public_a than_o a_o particular_a good_n and_o how_o common_a be_v it_o with_o we_o to_o cut_v off_o a_o part_n to_o save_v the_o whole_a but_o if_o natural_a reason_n unassisted_a by_o revelation_n be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o direct_v we_o in_o this_o yet_o by_o the_o help_n of_o that_o we_o shall_v be_v full_o furnish_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o what_o god_n will_v have_v we_o to_o do_v where_o there_o be_v a_o competition_n of_o one_o natural_a desire_n with_o another_o more_o particular_o whosoever_o consider_v the_o humane_a nature_n which_o be_v the_o top_n of_o god_n workmanship_n in_o this_o low_a world_n beside_o these_o affection_n which_o we_o have_v hitherto_o take_v notice_n of_o common_a to_o all_o animal_n he_o will_v discover_v some_o thing_n which_o be_v more_o particular_o find_v in_o man_n which_o will_v show_v he_o what_o the_o will_n of_o god_n be_v some_o of_o which_o be_v these_o follow_v 1._o that_o man_n be_v a_o compound_v be_v make_v up_o of_o very_a many_o part_n and_o faculty_n and_o those_o of_o very_a different_a nature_n and_o for_o divers_a uses_n the_o two_o to_o which_o all_o the_o other_o be_v reduceable_a be_v his_o body_n and_o his_o mind_n that_o have_v very_o various_a part_n and_o member_n this_o contain_v two_o illustrious_a faculty_n the_o understanding_n and_o the_o will._n now_o whosoever_o take_v notice_n of_o this_o he_o can_v but_o conclude_v if_o he_o suppose_v the_o creator_n wise_a that_o he_o do_v design_n and_o do_v will_n that_o all_o these_o faculty_n and_o part_n shall_v be_v put_v to_o the_o use_v for_o which_o they_o be_v fit_a that_o they_o shall_v neither_o be_v unemployed_a nor_o yet_o divert_v from_o their_o proper_a employment_n and_o use_v otherwise_o than_o by_o their_o nature_n they_o be_v fit_v to_o be_v thus_o then_o by_o what_o god_n have_v wrought_v in_o we_o we_o infer_v that_o it_o be_v his_o will_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v employ_v and_o in_o various_a work_n that_o we_o shall_v neither_o be_v idle_a nor_o yet_o do_v only_o one_o thing_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v in_o the_o exercise_n not_o only_o of_o some_o faculty_n but_o of_o all_o and_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v in_o any_o unnatural_a use_n of_o ourselves_o or_o of_o any_o part_n of_o we_o but_o ever_o be_v do_v those_o work_n for_o which_o our_o part_n and_o faculty_n be_v plain_o design_v by_o their_o maker_n and_o by_o their_o frame_n be_v fit_v 2._o the_o soul_n and_o body_n do_v in_o this_o state_n very_o much_o depend_v on_o each_o other_o they_o so_o sympathize_v that_o if_o one_o be_v well_o or_o ill_o the_o other_o partake_v of_o its_o prosperous_a or_o adverse_a condition_n i_o do_v not_o say_v that_o they_o be_v so_o total_o dependent_a on_o each_o other_o that_o the_o one_o can_v possible_o subsist_v or_o act_v without_o the_o other_o that_o they_o begin_v and_o will_v end_v together_o for_o natural_a reason_n give_v we_o good_a probable_a presumption_n and_o the_o religion_n of_o christ_n assure_v we_o of_o the_o contrary_n st._n paul_n and_o many_o other_o good_a man_n experience_n prove_v to_o we_o that_o the_o more_o the_o outward_a man_n decay_v the_o inward_a may_v grow_v more_o vivacious_a and_o be_v daily_o renew_v and_o increase_v in_o strength_n and_o vigour_n this_o by_o the_o assistance_n of_o the_o divine_a grace_n and_o our_o co-operation_n have_v often_o come_v to_o pass_v but_o yet_o every_o one_o be_v sensible_a of_o such_o a_o mutual_a dependence_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o body_n that_o the_o good_a or_o bad_a state_n of_o the_o one_o ordinary_o have_v influence_n on_o the_o other_o and_o this_o show_v plain_o that_o he_o who_o make_v we_o so_o intend_v and_o will_n that_o not_o one_o but_o both_o of_o they_o shall_v be_v regard_v that_o when_o we_o design_v the_o welfare_n of_o one_o we_o shall_v not_o look_v on_o that_o as_o divide_v from_o but_o as_o unite_a with_o the_o other_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o so_o gratify_v the_o body_n as_o if_o there_o be_v no_o soul_n nor_o shall_v the_o soul_n forget_v that_o it_o be_v in_o the_o body_n that_o we_o shall_v not_o look_v on_o ourselves_o as_o
natural_a to_o man_n which_o be_v corruptive_a of_o man_n this_o be_v a_o false_a notion_n we_o must_v not_o look_v on_o ourselves_o as_o mere_o passive_a 2._o we_o must_v not_o take_v up_o with_o inadequate_a thought_n of_o ourselves_o so_o as_o to_o take_v a_o part_n for_o the_o whole_a to_o think_v that_o we_o be_v nothing_o but_o body_n lead_v we_o into_o sensuality_n and_o a_o study_n to_o please_v and_o serve_v the_o flesh_n or_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n to_o imagine_v that_o we_o be_v in_o this_o state_n nothing_o but_o soul_n will_v dispose_v we_o to_o neglect_v the_o body_n and_o so_o we_o shall_v be_v prone_a to_o turn_v either_o brutish_a or_o monkish_a 3._o it_o be_v not_o enough_o that_o we_o know_v our_o whole_a self_n but_o we_o must_v rid_v our_o mind_n of_o confuse_a imagination_n for_o whilst_o these_o remain_v we_o do_v if_o not_o prefer_v the_o body_n before_o the_o mind_n yet_o equal_v they_o and_o either_o set_v the_o low_a faculty_n above_o the_o high_a or_o in_o the_o same_o rank_n and_o this_o as_o all_o disorder_n be_v be_v very_o pernicious_a and_o therefore_o not_o the_o will_n of_o the_o good_a one._n for_o the_o make_v all_o this_o clear_a let_v we_o consider_v a_o particular_a instance_n suppose_v a_o man_n persuade_v that_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o his_o maker_n that_o he_o shall_v endeavour_v his_o own_o preservation_n and_o perfection_n so_o long_o as_o he_o esteem_v the_o depravation_n of_o his_o nature_n as_o a_o very_a vehement_a desire_n of_o bodily_a pleasure_n to_o be_v natural_a he_o will_v then_o study_v to_o procure_v such_o delight_n he_o will_v earnest_o intend_v they_o though_o they_o be_v indeed_o the_o bane_n of_o his_o pleasure_n and_o of_o his_o very_a be_v this_o man_n so_o long_o as_o he_o have_v distinguish_v betwixt_o his_o machine_n and_o his_o life_n nor_o prefer_v one_o before_o the_o other_o as_o he_o can_v possible_o think_v himself_o bind_v to_o preserve_v that_o order_n betwixt_o these_o two_o which_o he_o understand_v not_o so_o whenever_o the_o body_n be_v in_o danger_n to_o be_v destroy_v he_o will_v apprehend_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o the_o same_o hazard_n and_o so_o
