of_o his_o sense_n his_o sight_n and_o hear_v may_v yet_o partake_v of_o a_o happy_a life_n forasmuch_o as_o he_o may_v nevertheless_o continue_v in_o the_o fruition_n of_o such_o and_o so_o many_o good_n as_o his_o maim_a nature_n be_v capable_a of_o and_o want_v those_o evil_n if_o not_o of_o his_o body_n yet_o at_o least_o of_o his_o mind_n which_o may_v otherwise_o have_v vex_v he_o ix_o nay_o upon_o the_o same_o ground_n we_o further_o profess_v that_o a_o wise_a man_n may_v be_v torment_v most_o cruel_o and_o yet_o continue_v the_o possession_n of_o his_o happiness_n for_o still_o he_o may_v enjoy_v not_o that_o divine_a but_o this_o human_a felicity_n since_o in_o a_o wiseman_n it_o be_v always_o as_o great_a as_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o present_a time_n will_v permit_v pain_n either_o by_o his_o impatience_n or_o desperation_n but_o rather_o mitigate_v and_o lessen_v they_o by_z as_o great_a constancy_n of_o mind_n as_o his_o generous_a resolution_n can_v fortify_v he_o withal_o in_o that_o respect_n doubtless_o he_o must_v be_v much_o more_o happy_a than_o if_o he_o have_v with_o pusillanimity_n fear_n reluctancy_n and_o despair_n entertain_v they_o or_o than_o another_o man_n who_o be_v under_o the_o same_o torment_n do_v not_o endure_v they_o with_o equal_a courage_n and_o constancy_n as_o not_o have_v the_o like_a encouragement_n and_o supply_n from_o to_o we_o and_o consequent_o that_o a_o wise_a man_n ought_v while_o he_o be_v in_o the_o flame_n of_o that_o brazen_a engine_n of_o torture_n to_o smile_v and_o cry_v out_o o_o how_o pleasant_a this_o be_v o_o how_o much_o be_o i_o above_o these_o torment_n how_o little_o do_v i_o fear_v or_o care_n for_o they_o forasmuch_o as_o we_o do_v not_o gainsay_v but_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n do_v not_o only_o constant_o and_o brave_o endure_v but_o also_o welcome_n and_o commend_v they_o insomuch_o as_o they_o give_v he_o a_o opportunity_n to_o experiment_n and_o gratulate_v his_o virtue_n and_o with_o internal_a alacrity_n to_o exclaim_v i_o be_o burn_v but_o not_o overcome_v why_o shall_v it_o not_o be_v more_o desirable_a not_o to_o have_v the_o fire_n overcome_v my_o constancy_n than_o not_o to_o have_v it_o consume_v my_o body_n and_o this_o we_o say_v in_o regard_n it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v expect_v but_o that_o a_o wise_a man_n may_v also_o be_v obnoxious_a be_v sweet_a or_o pleasant_a for_o a_o man_n to_o live_v without_o pain_n and_o sweet_a or_o pleasant_a likewise_o to_o enjoy_v good_a thing_n and_o be_v recreated_a by_o they_o it_o be_v a_o evident_a truth_n that_o without_o both_o these_o sweetness_n or_o pleasure_n or_o one_o of_o they_o at_o least_o felicity_n can_v be_v understand_v for_o we_o accept_v pleasure_n suavity_n jucundity_n and_o other_o term_n of_o the_o like_a importance_n for_o one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n though_o there_o have_v not_o want_v some_o who_o with_o great_a pomp_n and_o ostentation_n have_v so_o discourse_v of_o pleasure_n as_o if_o it_o be_v a_o certain_a evil_n in_o its_o own_o nature_n and_o upon_o consequence_n conclude_v it_o to_o be_v not_o only_o inconsistent_a with_o but_o whole_o alien_a from_o wisdom_n and_o happiness_n and_o therefore_o before_o we_o come_v to_o inquire_v whether_o felicity_n do_v consist_v in_o pleasure_n or_o not_o requisite_a it_o be_v that_o we_o with_o inconsideration_n and_o intemperance_n propose_v to_o themselves_o as_o the_o summary_n of_o their_o desire_n and_o accomplishment_n of_o all_o their_o hope_n that_o mean_a pleasure_n which_o beyond_o it_o to_o which_o to_o aspire_v in_o order_n to_o the_o compliment_n of_o our_o happiness_n for_o we_o then_o want_v pleasure_n when_o the_o absence_n of_o it_o do_v produce_v pain_n in_o we_o but_o when_o we_o be_v not_o pain_v then_o do_v we_o want_v no_o pleasure_n vii_o hence_o come_v it_o that_o the_o sum_n or_o height_n of_o all_o pleasure_n do_v consist_v only_o in_o the_o amotion_n of_o all_o pain_n or_o in_o that_o state_n which_o follow_v upon_o that_o amotion_n for_o wherever_o pleasure_n be_v there_o can_v be_v nothing_o of_o pain_n of_o anxiety_n and_o hereupon_o it_o follow_v also_o that_o the_o high_a pleasure_n terminate_v in_o the_o privation_n of_o pain_n may_v indeed_o be_v vary_v and_o distinguish_v but_o can_v never_o be_v augment_v or_o amplify_v for_o nature_n so_o long_o as_o she_o have_v take_v away_o all_o pain_n do_v increase_v pleasure_n but_o all_o pain_n be_v remove_v she_o suffer_v not_o pleasure_n to_o be_v increase_v in_o magnitude_n but_o only_o admit_v some_o certain_a variety_n thereof_o that_o be_v not_o then_o at_o all_o necessary_a as_o be_v such_o that_o be_v not_o comparate_v to_o this_o that_o we_o may_v not_o be_v pain_v viii_o moreover_o from_o hence_o it_o appear_v that_o those_o man_n insult_v without_o cause_n who_o accuse_v we_o not_o to_o account_v this_o to_o want_v all_o pain_n to_o be_v something_o consist_v in_o the_o middle_n betwixt_o pain_n and_o pleasure_n but_o so_o to_o confound_v it_o with_o the_o other_o member_n of_o the_o division_n as_o to_o make_v it_o not_o only_o a_o pleasure_n but_o even_o the_o high_a of_o all_o pleasure_n for_o because_o when_o we_o be_v exempt_v from_o pain_n we_o join_v in_o that_o very_a exemption_n and_o vacuity_n from_o all_o molestation_n and_o every_o thing_n wherein_o we_o joy_v be_v a_o pleasure_n as_o every_o thing_n wherewith_o we_o be_v offend_v be_v a_o pain_n therefore_o be_v the_o privation_n of_o all_o pain_n by_o we_o right_o name_v a_o pleasure_n for_o as_o when_o hunger_n and_o thirst_n be_v expel_v with_o meat_n and_o drink_n that_o very_a expulsion_n of_o the_o trouble_n of_o they_o do_v adferr_v the_o consecution_n of_o a_o pleasure_n so_o in_o every_o thing_n else_o the_o very_a amotion_n of_o pain_n cause_v the_o succession_n of_o pleasure_n ix_o hence_o also_o may_v we_o desume_v a_o convince_a reply_n to_o those_o who_o urge_v against_o we_o that_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n why_o this_o middle_a state_n of_o indolency_n shall_v be_v esteem_v rather_o a_o pleasure_n than_o a_o pain_n for_o upon_o the_o detraction_n of_o pleasure_n discontent_n do_v not_o present_o ensue_v unless_o perhaps_o some_o pain_n immediate_o succeed_v into_o the_o room_n of_o that_o former_a pleasure_n but_o on_o the_o contrary_a we_o always_o conceive_v a_o joy_n upon_o the_o loss_n of_o any_o pain_n though_o none_o of_o those_o pleasure_n succeed_v which_o consist_v in_o the_o delightful_a affection_n of_o the_o sense_n by_o which_o we_o may_v clear_o understand_v how_o great_a a_o pleasure_n it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v in_o pain_n whereof_o if_o any_o man_n doubt_v let_v he_o ask_v of_o those_o who_o be_v infest_a with_o those_o sharp_a pain_n of_o the_o gout_n toothache_n or_o any_o other_o acute_a disease_n x._o there_o be_v also_o who_o deride_v this_o our_o opinion_n object_v that_o this_o pleasure_n of_o indolency_n be_v like_o the_o condition_n of_o a_o sleep_a man_n and_o fit_v only_o for_o slothful_a and_o unactive_a enerveis_fw-la spirit_n but_o these_o consider_v not_o that_o this_o indolent_a constitution_n be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v a_o mere_a torpor_n or_o sluggishness_n as_o that_o it_o be_v the_o only_a state_n wherein_o we_o can_v perform_v all_o the_o action_n of_o life_n vigorous_o and_o cheerful_o and_o as_o we_o will_v not_o have_v the_o life_n of_o a_o wise_a man_n to_o be_v like_o a_o torrent_n or_o rapid_a river_n so_o will_v we_o not_o have_v it_o to_o be_v like_o a_o stand_n and_o dead_a pool_n but_o rather_o as_o a_o clear_a stream_n slide_v on_o in_o a_o constant_a silence_n and_o gentleness_n wherefore_o we_o contend_v that_o a_o wise_a man_n pleasure_n be_v not_o that_o which_o be_v dull_a heavy_a and_o unactive_a but_o that_o which_o reason_n make_v constant_a firm_a and_o sprightful_a unto_o he_o xi_o but_o to_o leave_v these_o our_o opponent_n and_o return_v to_o our_o theme_n there_o be_v two_o good_a thing_n of_o which_o our_o high_a good_a or_o chief_a felicity_n do_v consist_v viz._n to_o have_v the_o mind_n free_a from_o pertubation_n and_o the_o body_n free_a from_o pain_n and_o so_o that_o these_o good_n be_v full_a and_o above_o the_o capacity_n of_o increase_n for_o how_o can_v that_o which_o be_v full_a be_v increase_v if_o the_o body_n be_v immune_v from_o all_o pain_n what_o addition_n can_v be_v make_v to_o that_o indolency_n if_o the_o mind_n be_v constant_o serene_a and_o impertube_v what_o addition_n can_v be_v make_v to_o that_o tranquillity_n nor_o do_v those_o external_a blandishment_n of_o the_o sense_n in_o any_o measure_n augment_v but_o only_o serve_v to_o condite_fw-la and_o sweeten_v this_o state_n of_o high_a felicity_n for_o that_o consummate_v good_a of_o human_a nature_n be_v content_v with_o only_a the_o peace_n of_o mind_n and_o quiet_a of_o body_n chap._n vi_o of_o the_o mean_n to_o procure_v this_o felicity_n now_o see_v that_o this_o tranquillity_n of_o mind_n and_o indolency_n of_o body_n do_v constitute_v the_o chief_a felicity_n of_o man_n nothing_o can_v more_o concern_v we_o than_o to_o consider_v those_o thing_n which_o conduce_v to_o the_o attainment_n and_o conservation_n thereof_o insomuch_o as_o while_o we_o have_v that_o we_o have_v all_o thing_n and_o while_o we_o want_v it_o all_o we_o do_v be_v to_o attain_v it_o though_o for_o the_o cause_n aforesaid_a we_o seldom_o do_v attain_v it_o ii_o in_o the_o first_o place_n when_o they_o be_v generate_v iii_o as_o for_o the_o disease_n of_o the_o body_n since_o the_o excellent_a art_n of_o medicine_n be_v ordain_v as_o well_o for_o the_o prevention_n as_o cure_v of_o they_o leave_v the_o praescription_n of_o both_o preservative_n and_o curative_fw-it remedy_n to_o the_o learned_a professor_n of_o that_o art_n we_o shall_v sufficient_o discharge_v our_o present_a duty_n if_o we_o admonish_v you_o of_o only_o two_o thing_n the_o one_o be_v that_o we_o always_o observe_v temperance_n and_o live_v sober_o and_o continent_o to_o the_o end_n that_o we_o may_v
