remain_v i_o will_v brief_o knit_v up_o the_o rest_n that_o concern_v this_o matter_n young_a man_n have_v natural_a heat_n so_o much_o abound_v in_o they_o that_o they_o can_v rest_v but_o be_v still_o in_o motion_n as_o well_o of_o body_n as_o of_o mind_n the_o one_o with_o run_v leap_v and_o other_o exercise_n and_o when_o all_o they_o fail_v the_o tongue_n cease_v not_o which_o by_o reason_n of_o their_o age_n be_v the_o more_o bold_a and_o ready_a the_o other_o with_o pass_v from_o one_o discourse_n to_o another_o and_o from_o one_o passion_n to_o another_o now_o love_v now_o hate_v now_o boil_v with_o anger_n and_o choler_n now_o still_o and_o quiet_a with_o such_o like_a motion_n of_o the_o mind_n and_o because_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o body_n and_o the_o affection_n of_o the_o mind_n must_v have_v their_o measure_n and_o their_o rule_n and_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o convenient_a exercise_n and_o moderate_a rest_n therefore_o do_v the_o ancient_a wise_a man_n devise_v two_o special_a art_n most_o apt_a and_o fit_a for_o both_o these_o purpose_n whereof_o the_o one_o they_o call_v gymnastica_fw-la which_o be_v a_o skilful_a and_o moderate_a exercise_n of_o the_o body_n and_o the_o other_o music_n by_o which_o name_n it_o be_v well_o know_v in_o all_o language_n and_o when_o they_o have_v cause_v their_o youth_n to_o spend_v part_n of_o the_o day_n in_o learning_n those_o science_n and_o discipline_n which_o they_o think_v fit_a for_o that_o age_n for_o of_o all_o other_o thing_n they_o abhor_v the_o train_v they_o up_o in_o ignorance_n because_o seldom_o can_v a_o ignorant_a man_n be_v good_a and_o that_o man_n without_o knowledge_n and_o learning_n be_v but_o figure_n of_o man_n and_o image_n of_o death_n without_o soul_n or_o life_n then_o will_v they_o draw_v they_o to_o honest_a exercise_n of_o the_o body_n by_o degree_n for_o they_o hold_v it_o a_o thing_n most_o necessary_a for_o the_o wel-founding_a of_o a_o commonwealth_n to_o be_v continual_o careful_a of_o the_o frame_n youth_n both_o in_o body_n and_o mind_n because_o they_o know_v right_o well_o that_o good_a education_n make_v young_a man_n good_a and_o that_o such_o be_v commonwealth_n and_o state_n as_o be_v the_o quality_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o man_n which_o they_o do_v breed_v touch_v the_o body_n therefore_o they_o do_v devise_v to_o strengthen_v and_o harden_v it_o with_o convenient_a and_o temperate_a exercise_n as_o the_o play_n at_o ball_n leap_v run_a dance_a ride_a wrestle_a throw_v the_o bar_n the_o stone_n or_o sledge_n and_o such_o like_a for_o the_o mind_n they_o think_v best_a to_o stay_v and_o settle_v itself_o with_o the_o harmony_n of_o music_n and_o from_o these_o two_o they_o resolve_v that_o two_o great_a good_a effect_n do_v ensue_v from_o the_o first_o strength_n of_o body_n and_o boldness_n of_o spirit_n and_o from_o the_o latter_a modesty_n and_o temperance_n inseparable_a companion_n for_o the_o most_o part_n unto_o fortitude_n for_o some_o of_o they_o be_v of_o opinion_n that_o our_o soul_n be_v compose_v of_o harmony_n and_o believe_v that_o music_n be_v able_a so_o to_o temper_v our_o affect_n and_o passion_n as_o they_o shall_v not_o far_o or_o discord_n among_o themselves_o but_o be_v so_o interlace_v the_o one_o with_o the_o other_o in_o a_o sweet_a consent_n as_o well_o guide_v and_o order_v action_n shall_v proceed_v from_o the_o same_o even_o as_o sweet_a and_o delightful_a music_n proceed_v from_o the_o wel-tempering_a of_o tuneable_a voice_n or_o well_o consort_v instrument_n neither_o will_v they_o have_v the_o one_o to_o be_v exercise_v and_o the_o other_o omit_v for_o that_o they_o think_v if_o young_a man_n shall_v give_v themselves_o only_o to_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o body_n they_o will_v become_v too_o fierce_a and_o hardy_a and_o so_o be_v rather_o hurtful_a to_o their_o commonweal_n then_o otherwise_o and_o if_o they_o shall_v follow_v only_a music_n which_o be_v proper_a to_o rest_n and_o quietness_n and_o use_v as_o a_o recreation_n of_o the_o mind_n as_o aristotle_n say_v they_o will_v become_v soft_o mind_v and_o effeminate_a but_o by_o join_v both_o these_o faculty_n together_o in_o one_o they_o seek_v to_o make_v a_o noble_a temper_n and_o to_o induce_v a_o most_o excellent_a habit_n as_o well_o in_o the_o mind_n as_o in_o the_o body_n so_o that_o if_o valour_n be_v require_v for_o the_o defence_n of_o their_o country_n or_o vanquish_a of_o their_o enemy_n they_o be_v make_v fit_a and_o apt_a thereunto_o by_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o body_n but_o with_o such_o measure_n and_o temper_n as_o shall_v not_o exceed_v which_o measure_n and_o temper_n they_o obtain_v from_o that_o harmony_n which_o music_n imprint_v in_o their_o mind_n under_o which_o they_o comprehend_v not_o only_o the_o order_n of_o the_o voice_n and_o sound_n of_o instrument_n but_o all_o other_o orderly_o and_o seemly_a motion_n of_o the_o body_n which_o upon_o their_o stage_n or_o scene_n in_o the_o act_n of_o tragedy_n be_v chief_o to_o be_v discover_v and_o that_o all_o orderly_a motion_n be_v comprehend_v under_o music_n be_v hold_v so_o certain_a by_o pythagoras_n archetas_n plato_n cicero_n &_o other_o famous_a philosopher_n that_o they_o be_v of_o opinion_n that_o the_o orderly_a course_n and_o motion_n of_o the_o heaven_n can_v not_o be_v such_o as_o it_o be_v or_o continue_v without_o harmony_n though_o aristotle_n do_v oppose_v himself_o to_o their_o opinion_n and_o for_o this_o cause_n do_v lycurgus_n devise_v that_o music_n shall_v be_v conjoin_v with_o the_o military_a discipline_n of_o the_o lacedaemonian_n not_o only_o to_o temper_v the_o heat_n and_o fury_n of_o their_o mind_n in_o fight_n but_o also_o to_o cause_v they_o to_o use_v a_o certain_a measure_n in_o that_o march_n and_o other_o occasion_n of_o war_n in_o which_o respect_n they_o be_v wont_n to_o battle_n without_o certain_a pipe_n according_a to_o the_o time_n whereof_o they_o understand_v how_o to_o use_v their_o body_n and_o weapon_n from_o which_o respect_n also_o come_v our_o use_v of_o drum_n and_o trumpet_n to_o give_v soldier_n knowledge_n when_o to_o march_v when_o to_o stand_v when_o to_o assault_v and_o when_o to_o retire_v and_o consequent_o how_o to_o join_v order_n and_o measure_n with_o their_o valour_n against_o the_o enemy_n and_o the_o lansknight_n and_o the_o swisser_n use_v also_o the_o fife_n at_o this_o day_n with_o the_o drum_n and_o to_o say_v truth_n great_a be_v the_o force_n of_o music_n skilful_o use_v to_o stir_v up_o or_o to_o appease_v the_o mind_n for_o we_o read_v that_o pythagoras_n find_v a_o wanton_a young_a man_n enrage_v with_o lust_n ready_a to_o force_v the_o door_n of_o a_o honest_a woman_n he_o so_o calm_v his_o mind_n only_o by_o change_v the_o phrygian_a tune_n and_o number_n into_o the_o spondean_n that_o he_o give_v over_o his_o wicked_a purpose_n and_o therpander_n when_o a_o great_a sedition_n be_v raise_v among_o the_o lacedaemonian_n he_o with_o his_o music_n so_o quiet_v their_o mind_n bend_v to_o fury_n that_o he_o reduce_v they_o to_o a_o perfect_a peace_n it_o be_v also_o write_v of_o the_o great_a alexander_n that_o he_o be_v so_o move_v by_o that_o tune_n and_o number_n of_o music_n which_o the_o greek_n call_v orthios_n nomos_fw-la which_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o haughty_a tune_n to_o stir_v man_n to_o battle_n that_o he_o rise_v from_o the_o board_n to_o arm_v himself_o as_o if_o the_o trumpet_n have_v sound_v the_o alarm_n but_o what_o talk_v we_o of_o the_o ancient_a opinion_n concern_v the_o force_n of_o music_n to_o move_v man_n mind_n when_o we_o find_v they_o believe_v that_o their_o god_n be_v force_v by_o the_o virtue_n of_o music_n to_o appease_v their_o wrath_n for_o the_o lacedaemonian_n being_n infest_a with_o a_o great_a pestilence_n thales_n of_o candia_n be_v say_v by_o music_n to_o have_v mitigate_v their_o anger_n and_o so_o to_o have_v deliver_v they_o from_o that_o mortality_n the_o which_o thing_n homer_n also_o signify_v when_o he_o say_v that_o the_o youngman_n of_o greece_n with_o their_o song_n do_v appease_v apollo_n his_o wrath_n and_o cause_v the_o plague_n to_o cease_v which_o have_v infect_v their_o camp_n and_o the_o roman_n likewise_o be_v annoy_v with_o a_o great_a pestilence_n receive_v then_o first_o the_o sing_n of_o satyr_n into_o the_o city_n though_o but_o rude_o tune_v then_o as_o a_o remedy_n for_o that_o infection_n the_o force_n &_o efficacy_n of_o music_n then_o be_v such_o as_o i_o have_v declare_v it_o be_v no_o marvel_v that_o the_o egyptian_n after_o they_o have_v once_o receive_v it_o into_o their_o commonwealth_n as_o meet_v for_o the_o instruction_n of_o their_o youth_n will_v never_o after_o allow_v that_o it_o shall_v be_v alter_v or_o change_v but_o such_o as_o it_o be_v
have_v it_o not_o one_o only_a part_n power_n or_o faculty_n or_o virtue_n as_o we_o may_v call_v it_o but_o diverse_a appoint_v for_o diverse_a and_o sundry_a office_n for_o we_o be_v participant_a of_o the_o nature_n of_o all_o thing_n live_v and_o those_o be_v divide_v into_o three_o kind_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o man_n shall_v have_v some_o part_n of_o every_o of_o those_o three_o there_o be_v then_o one_o base_a and_o inferior_a kind_n of_o life_n of_o less_o estimation_n than_o the_o rest_n and_o that_o be_v the_o life_n of_o tree_n and_o plant_n and_o of_o all_o such_o thing_n as_o have_v root_n in_o the_o earth_n which_o spring_n grow_v bloom_n and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n which_o fruit_n aristotle_n say_v come_v from_o they_o in_o stead_n of_o excrement_n together_o with_o their_o seed_n and_o these_o tree_n and_o plant_n and_o such_o like_a grow_a thing_n have_v only_o life_n devoid_a of_o feel_v though_o pythagoras_n think_v otherwise_o or_o of_o any_o knowledge_n but_o by_o the_o benefit_n of_o nature_n only_o they_o spring_v they_o grow_v and_o bringforth_o fruit_n and_o seed_n for_o the_o use_n of_o man_n and_o for_o the_o maintain_n of_o their_o kind_n there_o be_v another_o kind_n of_o life_n less_o imperfect_a than_o that_o which_o be_v the_o same_o that_o perfect_a live_a creature_n have_v for_o of_o that_o life_n which_o be_v in_o manner_n a_o mean_a between_o the_o life_n of_o plant_n and_o this_o of_o sensible_a creature_n we_o need_v not_o now_o to_o speak_v or_o if_o it_o be_v we_o shall_v resemble_v it_o to_o that_o which_o physician_n call_v embryo_n and_o be_v the_o creature_n unperfect_a in_o the_o womb_n while_o it_o be_v between_o the_o form_n of_o seed_n and_o of_o the_o kind_n whence_o it_o come_v which_o life_n of_o perfect_a live_a creature_n have_v in_o it_o by_o nature_n power_n to_o feel_v and_o to_o move_v from_o place_n to_o place_n for_o we_o see_v they_o stir_v and_o feel_v and_o have_v power_n to_o desire_v those_o thing_n that_o be_v meet_v for_o the_o maintain_n of_o their_o life_n and_o of_o their_o nature_n and_o by_o natural_a inclination_n and_o for_o the_o increase_n and_o continuance_n of_o their_o kind_n they_o covet_v the_o join_n of_o their_o body_n to_o yield_v unto_o nature_n that_o which_o of_o nature_n they_o have_v receive_v that_o be_v to_o engender_v the_o like_a unto_o themselves_o but_o this_o power_n of_o the_o soul_n can_v use_v that_o force_n and_o virtue_n which_o natural_o it_o have_v if_o it_o have_v not_o withal_o that_o former_a part_n which_o be_v proper_a as_o be_v say_v to_o plant_n &_o be_v call_v vegetative_a you_o must_v give_v i_o leave_v to_o use_v new_a word_n of_o art_n such_o as_o be_v proper_a to_o express_v new_a conceit_n though_o they_o be_v yet_o strange_a and_o not_o denison_v in_o our_o language_n because_o it_o give_v life_n and_o increase_n to_o grow_a thing_n and_o without_o it_o the_o power_n of_o feeling_n do_v utter_o fail_v next_o after_o this_o come_v that_o excellent_a and_o divine_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o bring_v with_o it_o the_o light_n of_o reason_n contain_v in_o it_o the_o power_n faculty_n or_o virtue_n of_o the_o other_o two_o for_o it_o have_v that_o life_n which_o proceed_v from_o plant_n it_o have_v sense_n or_o feeling_n &_o motion_n from_o place_n to_o place_n proper_a to_o the_o second_o kind_n and_o it_o have_v beside_o that_o other_o part_n whereby_o it_o know_v understand_v discourse_v consult_v choose_v and_o give_v itself_o to_o operation_n and_o to_o contemplate_v thing_n natural_a and_o divine_a and_o this_o part_n be_v proper_a only_o to_o man_n and_o as_o by_o the_o two_o other_o faculty_n before_o mention_v we_o be_v like_a to_o plant_n and_o to_o bruit_n beast_n so_o by_o this_o last_o we_o do_v participate_v of_o the_o divine_a nature_n of_o god_n himself_o wherefore_o aristotle_n say_v that_o man_n be_v create_v upright_o for_o no_o other_o cause_n then_o for_o that_o his_o substance_n be_v divine_a who_o nature_n and_o office_n be_v to_o know_v and_o understand_v and_o true_o this_o gift_n be_v give_v unto_o we_o by_o the_o maker_n and_o governor_n of_o all_o thing_n because_o we_o may_v know_v ourselves_o to_o be_v of_o a_o nature_n most_o perfect_a among_o earthly_a thing_n and_o not_o far_o inferior_a to_o the_o divine_a and_o that_o we_o have_v receive_v so_o singular_a a_o gift_n from_o almighty_a god_n for_o no_o other_o cause_n but_o only_o to_o the_o end_n we_o may_v perceive_v how_o all_o other_o thing_n that_o grow_v and_o live_v on_o earth_n be_v corruptible_a and_o do_v resolve_v into_o their_o first_o principle_n or_o beginning_n and_o cease_v any_o more_o to_o be_v as_o soon_o as_o the_o soul_n of_o life_n depart_v from_o they_o but_o that_o our_o mind_n be_v immortal_a and_o incorruptible_a whereby_o we_o may_v rest_v assure_v of_o a_o eternal_a life_n since_o then_o these_o three_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o we_o it_o be_v clear_a that_o as_o the_o plant_n among_o thing_n that_o bear_v life_n be_v the_o most_o imperfect_a so_o that_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v most_o unperfect_a which_o be_v proper_a to_o their_o kind_n but_o it_o be_v so_o necessary_a to_o all_o other_o kind_n as_o without_o it_o there_o be_v no_o life_n and_o with_o it_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faculty_n that_o be_v join_v therewith_o though_o they_o be_v worthy_a decay_n and_o fall_v and_o this_o necessity_n of_o nature_n that_o without_o it_o she_o give_v no_o life_n make_v the_o same_o to_o be_v most_o base_a and_o ignoble_a for_o among_o natural_a thing_n those_o which_o be_v so_o necessary_a as_o without_o they_o nothing_o can_v be_v do_v be_v always_o hold_v and_o repute_v the_o most_o unworthy_a which_o thing_n we_o may_v see_v in_o that_o we_o call_v materia_fw-la prima_fw-la which_o though_o it_o be_v in_o nature_n before_o the_o form_n yet_o because_o of_o the_o necessity_n thereof_o it_o be_v esteem_v of_o no_o nobility_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o form_n and_o even_o so_o likewise_o among_o the_o sense_n that_o of_o feeling_n be_v hold_v the_o base_a because_o no_o perfect_a live_a creature_n can_v be_v without_o it_o nor_o yet_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o sense_n unless_o that_o be_v present_a and_o therefore_o aristotle_n say_v that_o the_o other_o sense_n be_v give_v to_o man_n that_o thereby_o he_o may_v live_v the_o better_a but_o the_o sense_n of_o feeling_n be_v give_v he_o because_o without_o it_o he_o can_v neither_o be_v nor_o live_v now_o for_o so_o much_o as_o life_n may_v be_v without_o sense_n because_o the_o sensitive_a soul_n be_v not_o of_o such_o necessity_n as_o be_v the_o vegetative_a therefore_o be_v that_o of_o more_o nobility_n than_o this_o somewhat_o yet_o inferior_a to_o the_o intellective_a which_o can_v no_o more_o be_v without_o the_o sensitive_a than_o the_o sensitive_a without_o the_o vegetative_a and_o because_o the_o intellective_a soul_n be_v not_o of_o necessity_n serve_v to_o any_o other_o faculty_n or_o power_n therefore_o be_v she_o as_o lady_n mistress_n and_o queen_n over_o all_o other_o the_o power_n faculty_n or_o virtue_n of_o the_o soul_n so_o as_o there_o be_v none_o proper_a unto_o man_n but_o that_o whereby_o he_o may_v be_v either_o good_a or_o bad_a happy_a or_o unhappy_a and_o the_o same_o be_v it_o whereby_o we_o understand_v and_o make_v choice_n rather_o of_o one_o course_n of_o life_n then_o of_o another_o this_o great_a gift_n have_v god_n bestow_v upon_o we_o to_o show_v his_o great_a grace_n and_o goodness_n and_o for_o this_o purpose_n that_o as_o he_o have_v invite_v we_o through_o virtue_n of_o our_o understanding_n to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o truth_n and_o by_o this_o knowledge_n to_o become_v like_a unto_o himself_o so_o we_o shall_v bend_v all_o our_o study_n and_o endeavour_n thereunto_o as_o the_o end_n and_o scope_n of_o our_o life_n in_o this_o world_n of_o which_o the_o occasion_n of_o this_o our_o present_a speech_n do_v first_o arise_v here_o i_o pause_v a_o while_n as_o to_o take_v breath_n and_o withal_o to_o order_v some_o of_o the_o paper_n the_o lord_n primate_n speak_v say_v have_v treat_v thus_o far_o of_o the_o power_n faculty_n virtue_n or_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n i_o think_v it_o not_o impertinent_a to_o move_v a_o question_n whether_o they_o be_v in_o man_n separate_v and_o in_o several_a place_n or_o whether_o they_o be_v unite_v all_o together_o and_o seat_v in_o one_o place_n this_o question_n quoth_v i_o be_v very_o pertinent_a to_o this_o place_n and_o by_o the_o author_n here_o resolve_v as_o a_o doubt_n not_o light_o or_o easy_a to_o be_v answer_v first_o for_o that_o there_o have_v not_o want_v some_o who_o will_v needs_o have_v that_o these_o three_o power_n of_o the_o
apprehend_v yet_o free_a of_o any_o material_a condition_n and_o this_o part_n be_v to_o the_o understanding_n as_o the_o hand_n be_v to_o the_o body_n for_o as_o the_o hand_n be_v apt_a to_o take_v hold_n of_o all_o instrument_n so_o be_v this_o power_n or_o faculty_n apt_a to_o apprehend_v the_o form_n of_o all_o thing_n from_o whence_o grow_v the_o universals_z which_o though_o they_o have_v it_o also_o the_o faculty_n of_o all_o the_o other_o soul_n within_o itself_o which_o thing_n he_o show_v more_o clear_o in_o his_o first_o book_n de_fw-fr partibus_fw-la animalium_fw-la say_v that_o to_o speak_v of_o the_o intellective_a soul_n all_o that_o may_v be_v say_v be_v not_o the_o office_n of_o a_o natural_a philosopher_n and_o this_o for_o two_o reason_n the_o one_o be_v that_o the_o intellective_a soul_n be_v no_o actor_n of_o the_o body_n because_o she_o have_v in_o she_o no_o part_n of_o motion_n either_o of_o herself_o or_o accidental_o for_o she_o neither_o increase_v nor_o diminish_v the_o body_n she_o nourish_v it_o not_o nor_o maintain_v it_o for_o these_o be_v function_n appertain_v
to_o the_o vegetative_a soul_n she_o change_v it_o not_o nor_o move_v it_o from_o place_n to_o place_n for_o that_o be_v the_o office_n of_o the_o sensitive_a soul_n and_o these_o be_v the_o motion_n which_o the_o body_n can_v have_v from_o the_o soul_n save_v generation_n and_o corruption_n which_o be_v change_v make_v in_o a_o instant_n therefore_o inasmuch_o as_o she_o be_v intellective_a she_o be_v not_o subject_a to_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o natural_a philosopher_n the_o other_o reason_n be_v for_o that_o the_o natural_a philosopher_n consider_v not_o the_o substance_n separate_v be_v the_o form_n thereof_o and_o therefore_o aristotle_n tell_v we_o in_o his_o second_o book_n of_o physike_n that_o the_o term_n or_o bind_v of_o the_o natural_a philospher_n consideration_n be_v the_o intellective_a soul_n for_o albeit_o he_o may_v consider_v the_o soul_n so_o far_o as_o she_o move_v and_o be_v not_o move_v as_o he_o may_v also_o the_o first_o mover_n yet_o do_v he_o not_o hence_o come_v it_o that_o aristotle_n treat_v in_o his_o book_n of_o physike_n of_o nature_n as_o she_o be_v the_o begin_n of_o all_o move_n and_o of_o rest_n when_o he_o be_v come_v to_o the_o first_o mover_n who_o be_v immovable_a yet_o move_v all_o that_o be_v move_v in_o the_o world_n proceed_v not_o any_o further_a to_o show_v his_o nature_n understand_v right_o well_o that_o the_o may_v in_o english_a call_v unfruitful_a shamefastness_n wherewith_o we_o will_v not_o wish_v our_o young_a man_n shall_v be_v any_o way_n acquaint_v but_o only_o with_o that_o generous_a bashfulness_n that_o may_v serve_v he_o for_o a_o spur_n to_o virtue_n and_o for_o a_o bridle_n from_o vice_n but_o because_o plato_n say_v that_o though_o bashfulness_n be_v most_o proper_o fit_v for_o young_a man_n yet_o that_o it_o be_v also_o seemly_a enough_o for_o man_n of_o all_o year_n and_o that_o aristotle_n contrariwise_o think_v it_o not_o meet_v for_o man_n of_o ripe_a year_n to_o blush_v it_o may_v therefore_o be_v doubt_v to_o whether_o of_o these_o two_o great_a learned_a man_n opinion_n we_o shall_v incline_v for_o clear_n hereof_o you_o must_v understand_v that_o the_o platonike_n say_v two_o thing_n among_o other_o be_v special_o give_v to_o for_o a_o divine_a gift_n unto_o man_n bashfulness_n the_o one_o and_o magnanimity_n the_o other_o the_o one_o to_o hold_v we_o back_o from_o do_v of_o any_o thing_n worthy_a blame_n &_o reproach_n the_o other_o to_o put_v we_o forward_o into_o the_o way_n of_o praise_n and_o virtue_n whereby_o we_o may_v always_o be_v ready_a to_o do_v well_o only_o for_o virtue_n sake_n to_o the_o good_a and_o benefit_n of_o other_o and_o to_o our_o own_o contentment_n and_o delight_n of_o which_o course_n the_o end_n be_v honour_n in_o this_o world_n and_o glory_n after_o death_n but_o because_o the_o force_n of_o the_o concupiscible_a appetite_n be_v so_o great_a and_o set_v before_o we_o pleasure_n in_o so_o many_o sundry_a shape_n as_o it_o be_v hard_o to_o shun_v the_o snare_n which_o these_o two_o enemy_n of_o reason_n set_v to_o entrap_v we_o and_o that_o the_o coldness_n of_o old_a age_n can_v whole_o extinguish_v the_o fervour_n of_o our_o appetite_n for_o my_o part_n i_o think_v that_o as_o in_o all_o age_n it_o be_v fit_a that_o magnanimity_n invite_v we_o to_o commendable_a action_n so_o also_o that_o we_o have_v need_n of_o shamefastness_n to_o correct_v we_o whensoever_o we_o shall_v go_v beyond_o the_o bound_n or_o limit_n of_o reason_n in_o what_o year_n soever_o and_o to_o check_v we_o with_o the_o bridle_n of_o temperance_n for_o though_o aristotle_n say_v that_o shame_n ought_v to_o die_v red_a in_o a_o man_n cheek_n but_o for_o voluntary_a action_n only_o yet_o plato_n consider_v that_o none_o but_o god_n be_v perfect_a without_o fault_n and_o that_o every_o man_n even_o the_o most_o virtuous_a fall_v sometime_o through_o humane_a frailty_n think_v according_a to_o christianity_n that_o ripeness_n of_o year_n or_o wisdom_n shall_v be_v no_o hindrance_n to_o make_v they_o ashamed_a but_o rather_o make_v they_o the_o more_o bashful_a whensoever_o they_o shall_v find_v in_o themselves_o that_o they_o have_v run_v into_o any_o error_n undecent_a or_o unfitting_a for_o man_n of_o their_o year_n and_o quality_n not_o intend_v yet_o thereby_o that_o the_o error_n of_o the_o ancient_a man_n be_v to_o be_v of_o that_o sort_n that_o young_a man_n fault_n common_o be_v who_o through_o incontinency_n run_v oftentimes_o into_o sin_n wilful_o whereas_o man_n of_o ripe_a year_n err_v or_o aught_o to_o err_v only_o through_o frailty_n of_o nature_n much_o better_o be_v it_o indeed_o for_o man_n of_o year_n not_o to_o do_v any_o thing_n of_o which_o they_o may_v be_v ashamed_a if_o the_o condition_n of_o man_n will_v permit_v it_o then_o after_o they_o have_v do_v it_o to_o blush_v thereat_o and_o much_o more_o reproachful_a be_v his_o fault_n if_o he_o offend_v voluntary_o then_o the_o young_a man_n but_o since_o no_o man_n though_o he_o have_v make_v a_o habit_n in_o welldoing_a can_v stand_v so_o assure_v of_o himself_o but_o that_o sometime_o in_o his_o life_n he_o shall_v commit_v some_o error_n it_o be_v much_o better_a in_o what_o age_n soever_o it_o be_v that_o blush_a make_v he_o know_v his_o fault_n then_o to_o pass_v it_o over_o impudent_o without_o shame_n and_o according_o saint_n ambrose_n say_v in_o his_o book_n of_o office_n that_o shamefastness_n be_v meet_v for_o all_o age_n for_o all_o time_n and_o for_o all_o place_n and_o for_o the_o same_o cause_n perhaps_o have_v wise_a man_n and_o religious_a hold_v that_o a_o angel_n of_o heaven_n assist_v every_o man_n to_o call_v he_o back_o from_o those_o evil_n which_o the_o ill_a angel_n with_o his_o sugar_a bait_n of_o delight_n and_o disordinate_a appetite_n entice_v he_o unto_o only_o for_o his_o ruin_n for_o they_o think_v that_o our_o force_n be_v not_o able_a to_o resist_v so_o mighty_a provocation_n as_o for_o plato_n and_o aristotle_n seem_v they_o differ_v in_o opinion_n for_o that_o the_o one_o consider_v humane_a nature_n as_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v and_o the_o other_o as_o it_o common_o be_v indeed_o which_o may_v the_o better_o be_v believe_v because_o aristotle_n in_o his_o book_n of_o rhetoric_n restrain_v not_o this_o habit_n of_o shamefastness_n so_o precise_o to_o young_a man_n but_o that_o it_o may_v sometime_o beseem_v a_o age_a man_n cheek_n also_o though_o so_o far_o as_o grace_v and_o wisdom_n may_v prevail_v it_o will_v best_o beseem_v he_o never_o to_o do_v the_o thing_n whereof_o he_o need_v be_v ashamed_a as_o before_o be_v say_v and_o the_o same_o rule_n ought_v young_a man_n also_o to_o propose_v to_o themselves_o whereby_o they_o shall_v deserve_v so_o much_o the_o more_o commendation_n as_o the_o heat_n of_o their_o year_n bear_v with_o they_o fiery_a appetite_n and_o they_o the_o less_o apt_a to_o resist_v so_o sharp_a and_o so_o intolerable_a prick_v the_o way_n to_o observe_v that_o rule_n be_v to_o strive_v in_o all_o their_o action_n to_o master_n themselves_o and_o to_o profit_v in_o virtue_n whereunto_o will_v help_v they_o chief_o that_o they_o endeavour_n themselves_o to_o bridle_v such_o desire_n as_o they_o find_v most_o to_o molest_v they_o not_o suffer_v they_o to_o transport_v they_o beyond_o the_o limit_n of_o honesty_n but_o because_o the_o day_n go_v away_o and_o that_o to_o treat_v particular_o of_o all_o that_o may_v be_v say_v concern_v the_o direction_n of_o youth_n to_o virtue_n which_o lead_v he_o to_o his_o felicity_n will_v require_v more_o time_n than_o be_v
