the Judgment of others 1. It is certain that God never meant to restore the Jewish Politie under Moses's Law for that Law is abrogated by Christ and so that Politie It 's Jewish Contradiction of Christianity to expect such a Restoration 2. Much less will God ever confine the Church and Covenant of Peculiarity to the Jewish Nation and take it from the Gentiles and cease Catholicism 3. Nor will God restore and confine the Jews to their ancient Country in Palestine which being such a Country of Wales now barren and about half as big as England would be far from making them a People of eminent Glory in the World but rather contemptible in that respect 4. Nor hath God promised to make the Jews Lords and Rulers over the rest of the Nations of the Earth as the Carnal sort of them did expect 5. Therefore no other calling of the Jews can be expected but that they become Parts of the catholick-Catholick-Church 6. It seems to me by History that this is performed long ago the main Body of their Nation being turned to Christianity To which purpose consider these things 1. Myriads were converted in Judea by the Apostles 2. In all other Countries of the Roman Empire the scattered Jews had Synagogues to which the Apostles first Preached and where they first gathered the Rudiments of the Christian Churches 3. A vast Number of the unbelieving Jews were destroyed by Vespasian and Titus when Jerusalem was besieged and destroyed 4. Many more Jews were then converted when they saw God's Judgements executed on them and the Christians spared 5. Vast Numbers of the remainder of the Unbelievers were destroyed by Adrian and the Christians spared and many turned Christians then 6. Since then many have been converted by Solemn Disputes and many Jews become eminent Doctors in the Church 7. They were ever fond of their own Country and therefore we may suppose that as many as could lived there And it 's known that all Conquerours use to transplant only the Rich and Ruling Men and leave the Multitude of the poor Labourers to manure the Ground that it may yield them Tribute So did Nebuchadnezzar And so in England did the Romans Saxons Danes and Normans They left the Vulgar to possess the Land under them or else the Land would have been unprofitable to them It was the Rich and the Soldiers that they drove into Wales so that we are mostly of a British Off-spring Now it is known that in the Days of Constantine and the following Christian Emperours though no Country wholly turned Christian of a long time Judea turned as other Provinces did and had their Bishops and their Patriarch in Councils and proportionably rather more than in other Countries were Christians there So that Judea was Christian as other Provinces were CHAP. XII 1. I Beseech you therefore brethren by the mercies of God that ye present your bodies a living Sacrifice holy acceptable unto God which is your reasonable service 1. Now to make Application of all this Doctrine fore-written I beseech you as you have a due sense of Christ's offering himself a Sacrifice for our Sins and of the great Mercy of the Gentiles Salvation by Grace and of our deliverance from the Burdens of the Jewish Law those costly Sacrifices of Beasts being abrogated by Christ that you will resign and dedicate your selves to God and as a living holy Sacrifice give up your own Bodies wholly to him even to the Obedience of his Commands and to suffer what he calls you to even to death which will be better than a Sacrifice of Beasts even a reasonable holy acceptable Service of God 2. And be not conformed to this world but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God 2. And now you are called out of the World and made a Peculiar People to God conform not your selves to the sinful Practices of the World but be transform'd from your former Errours and Sins by the renewing of your Minds by Truth and Holiness that you may know by experience the Goodness of God's Ways to which you are called and the Greatness of his Love 3. For I say through the grace given unto me to every Man that is among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think but to think soberly according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith 3. And specially because that the proud over-valuing of Mens own Understandings and thinking that they know more than they do is the common Cause of Errours and Sins of Censures Divisions and Heresies in the Churches I do as an Apostle sent and taught of God admonish and charge you all every one to think humbly of himself and not to think your selves wiser or better than you are but with wise self-suspicion and consciousness of your Ignorance and great Imperfection to think soberly of your selves according to truth and to the degree of Faith and Wisdom given you of God 4 5. For as we have many members in one body and all members have not the same Office so we being many are one body in Christ and every one members one of another 4 5. For as the Members of the same Body have great diversity in Number and Office so we though many individual Persons make up one Body or Church in Christ the Head in whom we are united and are related to each other as Members of the same Body 6. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us whether prophecie let us prophecie according to the proportion of faith 7. Or ministry let us wait on our ministring or he that teacheth on teaching 6 7. Seeing it pleaseth God to give various degrees of Gifts according to the dispensation of his Free Grace and not to make all equal in Gifts or Office let all confine themselves to their Measure and Office and that let them faithfully execute Let those that are inspired to speak as from God by Prediction or Instruction speak what God hath revealed to them according to the proportion of their Revelation and Knowledge and no more and not pretend Special Revelation against the sealed Word of Faith Let those that are called to any Special Service for the Church perform their own Office faithfully therein And let those that are called to teach be faithful Teachers Neglect not your own part and invade not others 8. Or he that exhorteth on exhortation He that giveth let him do it with simplicity He that ruleth with diligence He that sheweth mercy with chearfulness 8. He that is to exhort Men to practise what is taught let him do it diligently for Mens corrupt Wills and Affections have need of excitation and Persuasion as well as their Understandings of Information He that giveth his own or the Churches let him do it sincerely and impartially He that is intrusted to govern Chruch or Family let him
emboldned to go on in Sin supposing that now God pardoneth all Thus Satan hath turned Christs Sacred Ordinance against himself and the Peace of the Church and the Comfort of some and the Reformation of others and carrieth on these most horrid Depravations with such odious Success that without Wonders of gracious Providence there appeareth no probability of Deliverance from these heavy Effects of Sacrament-distraction CHAP. XII 1. NOw concerning spiritual gifts brethren I would not have you ignorant 2. Ye know that ye were Gentiles carried away unto these dumb idols even as ye were led 1 2. As to your case of discerning Spirits and Spiritual Gifts it is of great importance that you should not be ignorant lest you should take evil Spirits for the Spirit of God or not distinguish the various Gifts of Gods own Spirit in Believers In your Heathen state you were carried away with Idol Oracles and Worship 3. Wherefore I give you to understand that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord but by the holy Ghost 3. First in general you may be sure that none of those Idol Oracles or Blasphemers that speak against Christ and Anathematize him as Infidels do do speak by the Spirit of God For God's Spirit bore uncontrolable witness to Christ by Prophesie Resurrection Miracles and Holiness And on the contrary side he that believeth and confesseth that Jesus is the Lord the true Son of God and our Mediator hath surely learnt this of the holy Ghost his outward testimony in the foresaid evidence and his inward teaching For do but truly believe the truth of Christ himself and the truth of all his Doctrine will undeniably follow 4. Now there are diversities of gifts but the same Spirit 5. And there are differences of administrations but the same Lord. 6. And there are diversities of operations but it is the same God which worketh all in all 4 5 6. And as Gifts are ascribed to the Holy Ghost and Administrations to the Son and Operations to the Father Almighty so in all these there is great diversities both of kinds and of degrees 7. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withall 7. But all the gifts of the Spirit are given for the Churches edification or to do good with Though some of them are found in unholy Men who perish in their sin 8. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit 8. The same Spirit maketh one eminently wise and prudent in applying sacred Truth to the Case of the Hearers and it giveth another an eminent knowledge of sacred Mysteries 9. To another faith by the same Spirit to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit 9. Another he maketh eminently strong in Faith for extraordinary Effects and another hath the Gift of miraculous Healing of the Sick when the Spirit will have it done 10. To another the working of miracles to another prophesie to another discerning of Spirits to another divers kinds of tongues to another the interpretation of tongues 10. To another other sorts of powerful Miracles to another to speak by immediate Inspiration either Predictions or powerful Explications and Applications of Gods Word to another a quick and sure Discerning whether Men pretending to the Spirit speak from God or not to another the speaking of divers Languages to another the Interpretation of those Languages to them that understand them not 11. But all these worketh that one and the self-same Spirit dividing to every man severally as he will 11. And though these are very various and greatly d●fference Man from Man yet it is the same Spirit that worketh them all diversifying as he freely and wisely pleaseth 12. For as the body is one and hath many members and all the members of that one body being many are one body so also is Christ 12. For here One and Many well consist As the Natural Body is but One Body but made of Many Members differing in number excellency and office so is Christ and his Church 13. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body whether we be Jews or Gentiles whether we be bond or free and have been all made to drink into one Spirit 13. F●r as Sacramentally all visible Members are baptized into one Universal Church of professed Christian and drink the Cap of holy Union and Communion in the Lords Supper so all true living saved Members are baptized by one Spirit into one Universal Church of true spiritual Christians and drink the true uniting Spirit of Communion 14 15 16 17. For the body is not one member but many If the foot shall say Because I am not the hand I am not of the body is it therefore not of the body And if the ear shall say Because I am not the eye I am not of the body is it therefore not of the body If the whole body were an eye where were the hearing if the whole were hearing where were the smelling 14 15 16 17. The Body is not one Member as to Number Kind or Office but many united And so in Christs Body the Church If a mistaken Christian himself should say Because I am low in place Grace or Gifts I am none of the Church this will not prove or make him none Much less if others by false Censure or Church-tyranny say he is none or excommunicate him for dissenting from their vain Appendages or Opinions If all were of one Office Stature Complexion or degree of Grace or Knowledge who would be Rulers and who Subjects who Teachers and who Learners How many Offices of Piety and Charity would be unperformed God hath not a Church on Earth where all Members are so wise as besides the Essentials of Christianity to know all the Integrals much less to know the numerous little Accidents of Forms and Ceremonies and all that is really or pretendedly Indifferent and Lawful which Domineerers can invent to be so indeed and so to be all united in such things indifferent 18. But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body as it hath pleased him 19. And if they were all one member where were the body 20. But now are they many members yet but one body 18 19 20. But as the Wise Creator in Nature so as our Redeemer Governor and Regenerator by Grace God hath chosen great diversity of Members as to Office and Gifts and he himself as it pleased him hath set them in his Church And who are they that presume against him to censure or cast out the meanest of such Were they all numerically or in Office or degree of Knowledge and Grace but one or equal the Church would not be such a thing as God hath made it But now God that freely delighteth in the variety of his Works hath made it one Body of Christ composed of

That Love is the sum of that Holiness and Blamelesness to which we are predestinated 5. That we are not onely Predestinated to Life on condition of Holiness but are Predestinated to Holiness it self and consequently to Faith and Repentance and not onely on condition that we believe and repent And so Election is of Individual Persons to Faith Holiness and Salvation and not onely of Believers to Salvation or of Persons to be saved if they believe A Conditional puts nothing into being or act Were the Scripture dark in the Point of Gods free Electing of some to Faith and Repentance more than others of equal Guilt and Pravity Experience might fully satisfie us of it 7 8. In whom we have redemption through his blood the forgiveness of sins according to the riches of his grace wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence 7 8. In whom we have deliverance by Redemption through the Sacrifice of his Blood for our Sins even the forgiveness of all our Sin which manifesteth the Riches of his Grace and Bounty from which this Gift proceedeth in which he abounded toward us in the exercise of that wonderful Divine Wisdom and Prudence in the way of our Salvation by Christ which to search and know is the greatest Wisdom and Prudence of Man 9. Having made known unto us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself 9. Having now opened to us the Mystery of his own Will and good Pleasure which he purposed in himself but was little known by Jews or Gentiles 10. That in the dispensation of the fulness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ both which are in heaven and which are on earth even in him 10. In whom also we have obtained an inheritance being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will 11. Which Spirit is given us by God as the ascertaining Earnest of our Inheritance to fit us for and assure us of our attaining the Possession of that which Christ hath purchased for those whom he had redeemed to be his peculiar People 15. Wherefore I also after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and love unto all the saints 16. Cease not to give thanks for you making mention of you in my prayers 15 16. Hearing of the continuance and increase of your Faith and your Love to all the Saints and not onely to those that conform to your Minds in small or indifferent things do constantly give thanks to God for your Stability and daily pray for you 17. The eyes of your understanding being enlightened that ye may know what is the hope of his calling and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints 18. That your Minds being yet more illuminated you may fullier and clearlier know to what glorio●s Hopes he hath called us and what Treasures of Glory he hath promised to his Saints in whom he will be glorified for ever 19. And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who
believe according to the working of his mighty power 20. Which he wrought in Christ when he raised him from the dead and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places 19 20. And how wonderfully God hath manifested his Power in us that believe in giving us the Spirit of Miracles Tongues Prophecy c. and the Spirit of Illumination Faith Hope Love Joy Patience to go on in Labour and Suffering for Christ suitable to the Power which he shewed in raising Christ from death and advancing him to the Heavenly Glory where he is Lord of all 21. Far above all principality and power and might and dominion and every name that is named not only in this world but also in that which is to come 21. Far above all the Princes States and Powers on Earth the greatest Conquerors or Monarchs whether those that persecuted him and us or any other even those above us in the World that we are going to Angels or any sort of Spirits 22. And hath put all things under his feet and gave him to be the head over all things to the church 22. And hath given him power over all things and made him Head of the Church and Lord over all things for his Churches good and the Ends of Redemption 23. Which is his body the fulness of him that filleth all in all 23. Which Church is his Body Mystical the Celestial Political Society united to and under him in which he attaineth fully the Ends of his Redemption and in whom as glorified with him he is effectively a full and perfect Saviour in whom he will delight and be glorified and God that is all in all things fully manifesteth his Love and Glory Note 1. That the Text distinguisheth Christs Relation to his Church and to all things else He is Head to the Church by vital influx as his Body He is over all things some as Utensils for the Church and some as conquered Rebels or Enemies 2. How little reason the Church hath to fear malicious Principalities or Powers or Great Names or Devils any further than we fear our selves lest we yield to Sin by their Temptations seeing they are all in the power of Christ and under his Feet And therefore our sinful Fear doth plainly prove our Unbelief in that degree that it prevaileth 3. As the same Love so the same Power of God that was glorified in the Miracles and Resurrection of Christ is engaged for and glorified on the Church And this Glory we shall see in the fulness of time though now the Church as Christ on the Cross or in the Grave seem a forsaken shattered desolate thing 4. It is no wonder that Christ taketh what is done to his Church and Members as done to himself and will judge Men accordingly 5. The great Service that Christ requireth of us in the World is to contribute our utmost Labour and Help for the Church he himself needing nothing that we can do CHAP. II. 1. ANd you hath he quickened who were dead in trespasses and sins 1. And you who are members of this Church hath he revived and quickned by his mortifying and sanctifying Grace and by absolving you from the Guilt of Death who were in and by your Sin as dead to spiritual saving Good and liable by Guilt to everlasting Death your State of Sin was such a State of Death 2. Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world according to the prince of the power of the air the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience 2. In this Sin you lived in your former Gentile State according to the Temptations and Will of Satan who is by Gods permission the Prince of the Power of the Air and by his Temptations worketh in the unpersuadable Unbelievers and Ungodly against Gods Grace and their Salvation 3. Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind and were by nature the children of wrath even as others 3. And we our selves were formerly such as they and lived among them in fleshly Lusts fulfilling the Desires of our Flesh and our own Thoughts and false ●easoning and were by Natural Corruption not onely as Children of Adam but also the Progeny of Heathens the Heirs of Gods Wrath obliged to Punishment by his Justice as other Men and specially Heathens be 4. But God who is rich in mercy for his great love wherewith he loved us 5. Even when we were dead in sins hath quickened us together with Christ by grace ye are saved 6. And hath raised us up together and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus 4 5 6. But God who is very merciful to manifest his own free Love to us when we were as others dead in Sins hath by his own Grace begun our Salvation conforming us to the Resurrection and Exaltation of Christ by delivering us from the Death of Sin and Guilt and making us alive to Holiness and giving us the Earnest and Fore-taste of Glory 7. That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness towards us through Christ Jesus 7. That in these latter days he might shew forth the Glory of his Grace in our Redemption by Christ in which his Love and Kindness to us is resplendent 8. For by grace are ye saved through faith and that not of your selves it is the gift of God 9. Not of works lest any man should boast 8 9. For your Salvation is of Gods meer Grace and Gift through your Faith in Christ And this is not of your own contriving meriting seeking or effecting but all of Gods own Gift who hath chosen this way rather than that of Works that none may boast and ascribe that to themselves which is due onely to God 10. For we are his workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them 10. Not that we hereby exclude Good Works by excluding Mans boasting of his own Power or Merits For we our selves are Gods Work new made by Regeneration which planted us into Christ purposely to do those Good Works which neither the Law nor meer Nature enabled and enclined us to do These God hath fore-ordained and prescribed for us to live in and by Grace inclined us to do them 11. Wherefore remember that ye being in time passed Gentiles in the flesh who are called uncircumcision by that which is called the circumcision in the flesh made by hands 12. That at that time ye were without Christ being aliens from the common-wealth of Israel and strangers from the covenants of promise having no hope and without God in the world 11 12. And that you may duely value the Mercy of your Vocation you must never forget that you were of the Gentiles called Uncircumcised by the Jews and had no Knowledge of Christ as
promised or as Incarnate and were no pa●t of that peculiar People the Jews but Aliens whom they justly refused Communion with and were Strangers from the Covenant which promised Peculiarity and so had none of the hope of Redemption which those Promises gave nor knew how as reconciled to be accepted of God and lived as Atheists without the true Knowledge of God or Trust in him or Obedience to him though you had many Idols 13. But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ 13. But now ye are Christians you are brought as nigh God as the believing Jews the Partition being taken down and the Covenant of Grace founding an Universal Church purchased and sealed by the Blood of Christ whose peculiar People now ye are 14. For he is our peace who hath made both one and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us 14. For he is the Maker of our Peace with God and one another and hath taken away the Division between Jews and Gentiles which was like the Wall which kept the Gentiles in the outer Court of the Temple and opened to us all a way into the Sanctuary 15. Having abolished in his flesh the enmity even the law of commandments contained in ordinances for to make in himself of twain one new man so making peace 15. Being Man in the common Nature of Man and offering his Body a Sacrifice for the Sins of all he hath abolishe● the Law of Moses which contained Ordinances Ceremonial Typical and Political with severe Penalties and maketh us all one Catholick Church united in himself the Head 16. And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross having slain the enmity thereby 16. And as his one Body was crucified for both so he thereby reconcileth both to G●d in one Body or Society which is his Church having abolished the Enmity 17. And came and preached peace to you which are afar off and to them that were nigh 17. And this Gospel of Reconciliation and Unity he hath by himself and his Apostles preached and offered Grace and Peace both to Gentiles and Jews 18. For through him we both have an access by one Spirit unto the Father 18. For through his Merits Intercession and Covenant all Believers Jews and Gentiles are made the Children of God and are sealed by his Spirit of Adoption which is an Intercessor within us by whom we have access to God 19. Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners but fellow-citizens with the saints and of the houshold of God 19. And now this Reconciliation being made by Christ you Gentiles are no longer Strangers or Forreigners to the Church or peculiar People of God but are free Denizens Burgesses or enfranchised Citizens with the rest of the holy Society even Members of the Holy Catholick Church of Adopted ones which is as the Houshold of God 20. And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner-stone 20. And I may liken you not onely to the Houshold but to the Ho●se of God of which you are a living part built on the Doctrine of the Apostles and Prophets qualified by the Holy Ghost and authorised by Christ to call and gather his Catholick Church and so may secondarily be called its Foundation Christ himself being the primary Foundation or Chief Corner-stone 21. In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord. 21. In whom as the Head of Union all the Church of God being compact into one holy Society as it were of Living Stones is built riseth and groweth up to be an holy Temple to the Lord increasing to its perfection 22. In whom you also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit 22. And as God called the Temple at Jerusalem his Dwelling so by the Spirit of Christ you also with all the rest of the Faithful are built up as a holy Temple in which by the same Spirit God will dwell Note That 1. The Catholick Church is not onely that which was once by the Policy of Emperours and Bishops called Catholick as National being in that Empire onely and under its Laws but as it containeth all Christians in the World 2. That it is Headed onely by Christ the Center of its Unity 3. That inspired Apostles and Prophets being the M●ssengers of new Divine Revelation are its secondary Foundation by an Authority and Qualification proper to them and not extending to Bishops or their Councils who come after them 4. Note the great Dignity of the Church as resulting from this Foundation Christ and the Reconciliation wrought by him 5. That they that would destroy this Unity and Superstruction fight against Christ and would destroy the Church which is most notably done by setting up a false Head or Foundation or making false uncapable Terms of Union by the presumptuous Canons and Laws of Usurpers 6. That though this Church have no Uniting Head but Christ yet it must be compact as the Members of his Body and have one Faith Hope Baptism and Spirit of Love and abhor Division as Destruction CHAP. III. 1. FOr this cause I Paul the prisoner of Jesus Christ for you Gentiles 1. Having those great Encouragements I Paul even glory that I am Christs Prisoner for the Gentiles sake even for preaching the Gospel for their Conversion and Salvation Note That at once Paul was the Jews Prisoner as his Accusers and Persecutors and the Heathen Romans Prisoner as his Judges and Christs Prisoner both finally as suffering for his sake and obligatorily as Commissioned for a Persecuted Work and the Gentiles Prisoner finally as suffering for his Labours for their Salvation 2. If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward 3. How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery as I wrote afore in few words 2 3. For I suppose you have heard how for your good God hath commissioned me to declare and dispence to you the Gospel of Grace and Gifts of the Spirit and by Revelation from Heaven by the Voice of Christ and inwardly by his Spirit made known to me the Mystery of Mans Redemption and the Calling of the Gentiles as I wrote briefly before 4 5. Whereby when ye read ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit 6. That the Gentiles should be fellow-heirs and of the same body and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel 4 5 6. In which you may read my Explication of this Mystery and perceive that Christ hath acquainted me with it which in former Ages was not openly and clearly made known to Men as it is now by the Spirit revealed to the holy Apostles and Prophets who
these are the Sins for which Gods Wrath cometh on the Unbelievers and therefore will do so on all the Disobedient that live in them Therefore be not you Partakers in the Sin if you would not partake also of the Punishment 8. For ye were sometimes darkness but now are ye light in the Lord walk as children of light 8. For you were in darkness formerly your selves but Christ hath brought you into the light of saving Knowledge Live then as in the Light according to the Gospel and Spirit of Christ and do that of which you need not be ashamed 9 10. For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. 9 10. For Christ ruleth all true Christians by his Spirit of Illumination and Sanctification and the Fruits of that Spirit and Light are Goodness Love and Kindness Righteousness Truth and Faithfulness trying and chusing what is pleasing to the Lord. 11. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness but rather reprove them 11. Communicate not with these Heathens and Hereticks Works of Darkness and fleshly Lusts but rather do your best to save Men from them by reproof 12. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret 12. For their secret Filthiness which cannot bear the Light is such as Modesty is loth to name 13. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light for whatsoever doth make manifest is light 13. But all things when the Light discovereth them are manifest and if approvable need not fear it for the Doctrine and Spirit of Christ are a manifesting Light 14. Wherefore he saith Awake thou that sleepest and arise from the dead and Christ shall give thee light 14. Which is the sense of Isa 60.1 which calleth the People that slept in Darkness to awake that the Lord may shine upon them which Christ now doth to true Believers 15. See then that ye walk circumspectly not as fools but as wise 16. Redeeming the time because the days are evil 15 16. See then that you live not carelesly but with watchfulness and accurate circumspection not as Fools that see not or mind not their danger but as Wise Men that look on every side and are careful to avoid all sorts of Evil And therefore take hold of the present Opportunity and use well the Light of the Gospel while you have it for the World is round about you full of Snares and Dangers which without wise Circumspection cannot be avoided 17. Wherefore be ye not unwise but understanding what the will of the Lord is 17. Wherefore let not Ignorance and Folly prepare you for Deceit but labour to be well acquainted with the Will of God concerning your Duty 18. And be not drunk with wine wherein is excess but be filled with the Spirit 19. Speaking to your selves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord 18 19. And do not like Heathens and sensual Libertines think that the exhileration of excess of Wine which causeth Sottishness and Lust is either lawful or suitable to Devotion but be you exhilerated by the Spirit of God whose Grace you must excite and exercise by Psalms and Hymns of Praise to God and Spiritual Songs which you must use in holy manner to the Lord with the inward Melody of the Heart Note 1. That Paul here leaveth it to Christian Wisdom whether we shall use David's Psalms for others more fitted to Gospel Times and Worship 2. That hence it is evident that it is lawful to use some Forms of Worship invented and imposed by Man For Hymns and Songs cannot be used without Invention And the Church or many cannot join in them unless some one lead and impose them on the rest It would be mad Work for a Congregation to sing extemporate Songs and every one a several one of his own And if Prayer and Praise in Metre may be invented and imposed the same Reasons will hold as to Prose when Uniformity is needful as in Baptism c. 20. Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ 20. Chearfully thanking God continually on all occasions for all his Mercies which are found in all things that he doth offering this to the Father in the Name of Christ Note That Psalms and Thanksgiving to God through Christ must be the most constant Part of Christian Worship 21. Submitting your selves one to another in the fear of God 21. And let Gods Command move you to be yielding and submissive and not stout and staff towards one another but especially to your Superiours but so as to fear and obey God before Men. 22 23. Wives submit your selves unto your own husbands as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church and he is the Saviour of the body 22 23. Let Wives shew their Subjection to Christ by submitting to their Husbands as by his Command For the Husband is under Christ the Head or Ruler of the Wife to govern her in Love and protect her as Christ is the Supreme Head and Ruler of the Church and the Saviour of it as his Body 24. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing 24. Therefore as the Church is in all things to be subject to Christ so must the Wives be to their Husbands in all things belonging to that Relation under Christ 25. Husbands love your wives even as Christ also loved the church and gave himself for it 26. That he might sanctifie and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word 25 26. Husbands imitate Christ in loving your Wives as Christ did his Church for which in a special sense he gave himself by death that he might sanctifie it to God and cleanse it from Sin by washing away their Guilt and Filth signified and sealed in Baptism and by the Promises and Preaching of his Word 27. That he might present it to himself a glorious church not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing but that it should be holy and without blemish 27. That he may prepare it for the great Marriage-day and then present it to himself cleansed and beautified without Sin Guilt or Blemish but perfect in Holiness and glorious 28. So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies he that loveth his wife loveth himself 28. As Eve was taken out of Adam so the Union between Husband and W●fe is so near that Men should love their Wives in a sort as their own Bodies and to love a Wife should be as the loving of our selves 29. For no man ever yet hated his own flesh but nourisheth and cherisheth it even as the Lord the church 29. And as Nature causeth all Men to love nourish and cherish their own
of the Lord unto all pleasing being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God 10. That you may live suitably to your professed Faith sincerely obeying and pleasing God in all things which is your Worthiness in a Gospel-sense bringing forth the Fruits of all sorts of Good Works and increasing in the Knowledge or acknowledging of God 11. Strengthened with all might according to his glorious power unto all patience and long-suffering with joyfulness 11. Note 1. The glorious Power of God appeareth in his Servants Strength 2. The Strength of Christians appeareth most in suffering long and patiently for Christ with joy and not in overcoming Men by Strength 12. Giving thanks unto the Father which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light 12. Note 1. The Inheritance of the Saints is in the State and World of Light that is of Vision and Glory 2. Gods way of bringing Men to this Glory is by fitting them for it now by Holiness 3. This is the Gift which obligeth us to the greatest Thankfulness to God 13. Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son 13. Note The World is divided into two Societies One under the Power of Darkness that is Satan the Prince of Darkness who leads Men by the way of Ignorance Errour Unbelief and Lies to the utter Darkness of Misery The other is the Kingdom of Christ led by him who is the Light of the World by Truth Knowledge and Faith to the Heavenly Light 2. When Men are truly converted to Christ they are initially delivered from the Power State and Way of Darkness into the Kingdom of Christ and Light 14. In whom we have redemption through his blood even the forgiveness of sins 14. Note Christs Blood is the Price of our Redemption and Remission of Sin is much of the Collation and Application Redemption signifieth Deliverance from Bondage 15. Who is the image of the invisible God the first-born of every creature 15. In whose Humane Nature Doctrine and Works the Invisible God whose Image he is is manifested to Man and who in his Divine Nature was begotten of the Father before any Creature was made even from Eternity and in his Person as God-Man is most Excellent and is Lord of all This First-born numbreth him not with Creatures but sets him above them 16. For by him were all things created that are in heaven and that are in earth visible and invisible whether they be thrones or dominions or principalities or powers all things were created by him and for him 17. And he is before all things and by him all things consist 16 17. By him as God were all things created and for him and he is from Eternity before them all and by him they are upheld in being Note 1. Some by things in Heaven and Earth and Thrones Dominions c. understand onely Jews and Gentiles and the Powers of Men But this forced Exposition is groundless it being certain that all Heavenly Powers and Orders were created by the Eternal Word and Paul being here extolling his Magnificence why should we feign him to leave out the highest Part which he so plainly expresseth That Celestial Spirits have potent Superiority both over us and one another is no doubt II. The ancient Churches and Hereticks had so great Contentions about the right Notions of the Nature and Person of Christ and with such dismal Effects as maketh many Lovers of Peace to wish that such Points had been handled more cautelously reverently and peaceably Four notable Opinions there be about the Natures and Person of Christ 1. The Orthodox hold That he hath onely two Natures in one Person the Divine and Humane And of these the subtle Philosophers say that the Humane Nature is no part of his Person but an Adjunct because God cannot be a Part. But others avoid this as dangerous 2. The Arians think Christ is but a Creature but is a Superangelical Spirit the first created by whom God made all the rest and that he assumed the Humane Nature and may be well called God but not as the Father is nor of the same Substance And so that he hath two Natures Superangelical and Humane Of these 1. Some think that the Superangelical as a Soul assumed onely a Humane Body And 2. Some that he assumed a Soul and Body 3. A third sort say Christ hath three Natures 1. The Divine producing by Emanation the first created Superangelical Nature united to it self and by it creating all other things and both these Natures in the fulness of time assuming the Humane Nature entire say some and a Body Onely say others 4. The last and worst is that of the Socinians that count Christ a meer Glorified Man This Text seemeth to speak but the first though the Favourers of the third think it is for them and that other Texts are so also They think it was not onely the Divine Nature but the Superangelical which appeared to Abraham Moses c. in a visible Body before the Incarnation And by asserting these three Natures in Christ they would reconcile the Orthodox and the Arians The Controversies also whether Christ be two Persons or but one and have two Wills and Operations or but one and whether it may be said That Mary was the Mother of God and that one of the Trinity was crucified c. did grievously rend the Church of which I have spoken elsewhere and plainly shewed in what sense Christ is two yea many Persons relatively and in what sense but one and in what sense his Wills are two and in what sense but one 18. And he is the head of the body the church who is the beginning the first-born from the dead that in all things he might have the preeminence 18. And he is now the Head both by Government and quickning Influence of the Church which is his Body Politick and united to him incomprehensibly the Spring of Life to us and the first that rose from Death to glorious Immortality triumphantly by his own Power by whom it is that we live and shall be raised For in all things he is Highest above all Creatures 19. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell 19. For it seemed good to the Father that Jesus Christ should be filled with all Created Perfection as well as he hath Divine Perfection and be the Spring and Treasure of all Good as the Head over all things to his Church and the Universal Administrator 20. And having made peace through the blood of his cross by him to reconcile all things unto himself by him I say whether they be things in earth or things in heaven 20. And having accepted his Sacrifice on the Cross for a general Attonement and Propitiation by him to reconcile the guilty sinful and cursed World to him so far as that their Guilt and Enmity should not hinder
is the full Truth as I have proved in a set Treatise 18. Let no man beguile you of your reward in a voluntary humility and worshipping of angels intruding into those things which he hath not seen vainly puft up by his fleshly mind 18. Let no Man beguile you of the Reward of Christianity by pretending greater self humbling than God commandeth by worshipping Angels intruding into and pretending to know the things which he never saw nor God revealed to him vainly puffed up by the Imaginations of his fleshly Mind and building on his deluded Conjectures and Self-conceits 19. And not holding the head from which all the body by joynts and bands having nourishment ministred and knit together increaseth with the increase of God 19. By which they depart from their due Dependence on Christ the Head whose Office it is to be the sole immediate Mediator between God and Man and the Lawgiver to the Church who hath given us sufficient notice what Worship God accepteth It is from him the Head of Life and Government that the Body even the Church receiveth its Nourishment and holy Increase by the Blessing of God it being by Joynts and Ligaments of Faith Love and Ministry and Communion for Concord conjoined and made a meet Receiver 20. Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world why as though living in the world are ye subject to ordinances 21. Touch not taste not handle not 22. Which all are to perish with the using after the commandments and doctrines of men 20 21 22. If then you be dead to the Rudiments of all other Masters and Customs in the World of Jews or Heathens in conformity to your Crucified Lord why as though yet you were not separated from the World to Christ are you subject to such Ordinances which Christ never made you but hath abolished as Touch not taste not meddle not with such and such Meats as unclean and the like which were all temporary things and consist in transient unprofitable Actions having no Reward of God as being but the Products of the Commands and Doctrines of unauthorised Men. 23. Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will-worship and humility and neglecting of the body not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh 23. Which are the things for which as deceitful Shews tho Heretical and Heathen Seducers pretend to be wiser Men than the Apostles and Christians and to be more pious Men and so would draw you to their Errours as being stricter in Voluntary Worship and greater Humility and neglecting of the Body on pretense of being more for the Soul and not as sensual Men do setting up and pampering the Flesh Note The Description of Paul and Church Historians notifie to us that these Hereticks made up a Religion of three Parts 1. Of the Name and some Parts of Christianity to keep in with the Christians 2. Of many Jewish Rites to keep fair with the Jews 3. But the main Substance which they boasted of was Pythagorean Heathenism in which they pretended great knowledge of Spirits Demons and invisible things their Orders Powers Offices Durations c. which God never revealed but the deluded Imaginations of themselves and the said Pythagorean and Platonick Philosophers taught them In many of which Superstitions of Will-worship Angel-worship Laws of Penance on the Flesh while the vain Mind usurpeth Christs Legislative Power too many of the carnal corrupt Church do imitate them to this day CHAP. III. IF ye then be risen with Christ seek those things which are above where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God 1. If then you be true Christians risen with Christ as you profess to the hope of a Celestial Glory and to a Holy Life shew it by seeking the things which are above where Christ who you trust in is as your Head over all in glory 2. Set your affection on things above not on things on the earth 2. Let the Heavenly things and not the things on Earth have your strongest affections your Love your Desire your Hope your Joy your Care your very Hearts 3. For ye are dead and your life is hid with Christ in God 4. When Christ who is our life shall appear then shall ye also appear with him in glory 3 4. For ye are dead to the World and sin and the root of your Spiritual Life is not in your selves but both your Objective Life which is your Happiness and the Root of all your Spiritual Life are out of sight with Christ in God It is by him that you live and it is with him and on him that you must live in Glory for ever 5. Mortifie therefore your members which are upon the earth fornication uncleanness inordinate affection evil concupiscence and covetousness which is idolatry 6. For which things sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience 5 6. Therefore tho your Lusts are as it were the very Members of your corrupt fleshly Nature kill them all even Fornication Uncleanness Inordinate Affections of Love or delight all evil lustings or desires and Covetousness which loveth the Creature above God and which is Idolaters sin For it is for these things that the Unbeliving Rebellious World is under the wrath of God 7. In the which ye also walked sometime when ye lived in them 7. These sins were formerly your own practices when you were Heathens among them 8. But now you also put off all these anger wrath malice blasphemy filthy communication out of your mouth 9. Lie not one to another seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds 8 9. But now you must not only cast off all these filthy sins but also all that is contrary to Love and Peace all sinful wrath and malice and evil speaking and rybaldry and lying For all these are the Members and Deeds of the Old Man or state which you have renounced 10. And have put on the new man which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him 10. And you have by Conversion become New Men renewed in Saving Knowledge unto the Image of that God and Saviour who is the maker of this New Creature 11. Where there is neither Greek nor Jew circumcision nor uncircumcision barbarian Scythian bond nor free but Christ is all and in all 11. Where the Interest and Union that we have all in One Christ who is all in all doth swallow up all the little differences of Greeks and Jew c. And so must lo in our Communion 12. Put on therefore as the elect of God holy and beloved bowels of mercies kindness humbleness of mind meekness long-suffering 12. Let these therefore be your very Habit and Nature and Practice as becometh Gods chosen holy and beloved ones Bowels of Mercy Kindness c. 13. Forbearing one another and forgiving one another if any man have a quarrel against any even as Christ forgave you so also do ye 13. Note 1. That
hath appointed to be Owner and Lord of all things as he is God and Man not only by the prime right of Creation but as the Redeemer of Man all power in Heaven and Earth and all things are delivered to him for the ends of Redemption And by him his Wisdom and Word he made the Worlds and all therein 3. Who being the brightness of his glory and the express image of his person and upholding all things by the word of his power when he had by himself purged our sins sat down on the right hand of the majesty on high 3. Who being the shining Beam or Splendor of his Glory by whom God shineth forth or giveth the knowledge of himself to us as the Sun is known to us by its light and the Character of his Subsistence and upholding and ruling all things by the Word of his Power as by that Word of God's Power they were made when he had by his own Merits and Sacrifice and Covenant made a sufficient Purgation to take away the guilt of our sins and so far purged them away as to enact a pardoning Covenant for all that will believingly accept it in him So that now the general Pardon wants nothing but Acceptance and none shall perish for want of sufficiency in the Sacrifice or Covenant he then ascended and is in heavenly Glory at the Right Hand of God's supream Celestial Majesty Head over all things to his Church that thence he may send down the Holy Ghost to gather his Chosen and bring his Mystical Body to Glory 4. Being made so much better than the angels as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they 4. Being in Excellency and Superiority set above the Angels as he hath by Lot or Inheritance obtained higher Titles Power and Offices than they 5. For unto which of the angels said he at any time Thou art my Son this day have I begotten thee And again I will be to him a Father and he shall be to me a Son 6. And again when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world he saith And let all the angels of God worship him 5 6. He calls Christ his Son in divers Texts which though it speak partly of David yet ultimately meaneth Christ and he commandeth the Angel● to worship him But none of this is said of Angels 7. And of the angels he saith Who maketh his angels spirits and his ministers a flame of fire 7. But he calls his Angels Spirits and Servants and a Flame of Fire 8. But unto the Son he saith Thy throne O God is for ever and ever a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom 9. Thou hast loved righteousness and hated iniquity therefore God even thy God hath anointed thee with the oyl of gladness above thy fellows 8 9. But to the Son he ascribeth the name of God and an Everlasting Throne and Kingdom and a Scepter of Righteousness and a Superiority by Divine Unction above all others 10. And thou Lord in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth and the heavens are the works of thine hands 11. They shall perish but thou remainest and they all shall wax old as doth a garment 12. And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up and they shall be changed but thou art the same and thy years shall not fail 10 11 12. He is said to be the Lord who made Earth and Heaven and who will remain when they perish and be the same when they are changed 13. But which of the angels said he at any time Sit on my right hand until I make thine enemies thy footstool 13. He never said to any Angel what he said to Christ of his Kingdom and the subduing of his Enemies c. 14. Are they not all ministring spirits sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of Salvation 14. All those Spirits that are properly called Angels or Messengers are Spirits appointed and sent forth by God to minister for them who shall be Heirs of Salvation under Jesus Christ Annotation THE great difficulty here is to understand how this description belongeth to the Person of Christ Whether it be the Divine Nature that is said to be appointed Heir c. the Brightness of God's Glory the Character of his Subsistence or Person made better than Angels begotten this day set on God's right hand in power c. or the Humane Or whether it be spoken of the Person of Christ as in both Natures and we must not enquire according to which Nature the words are spoken of Christ I have before said on Col. 1.15 16. how many Opinions about the Person and Natures of Christ have been pleaded for 1. That of the Orthodox who assert but one Person of Christ and two Natures though the word Person was long refused by many as not meaning the same with Hypostasis And subtil Philosophers say that the Humane Nature can be no part of Christ's Person but an Adjunct because his Person was compleat from Eternity and the Deity cannot be a Part. But if it were not that the Hereticators will quarrel with it it may be said that the word Person is equivocal and that as Hypostasis is a Person the Divine Nature is the whole Person but not as it is 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 or a Relative Person 2. That of the wretched Socinians who feign Christ to be meer Man advanced 3. That of the Arrians who make him only the first Creature or Emanation of God incarnate super-angelical Light of Lights Very God of very God begotten by Emanation not made as other Creatures but making them all but yet not of the same Essence or Substance with the Father but from the same as a Beam or light from the Sun This the Church hath condemned these 1300 years and more 4. That of some of late who say that Christ hath three Natures 1. The Divine 2. The aforesaid Super-angelical assumed by the Divine to nearest Union 3. The Humane assumed by Both. And they think that this Text speaketh chiefly of the second as assuming the third As it is dangerous to err about any necessary point concerning Christ's Person so it is dangerous to be rash in taking up any unnecessary Opinion about so incomprehensible a Mystery and worse to urge it with pride and fury to the dividing of the Church and the damning of Dissenters To say about many Cases that have torn the Churches I know not is more pardonable than turbulent Error CHAP. II. THerefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard lest at any time we should let them slip 1. Therefore we that have heard the Gospel of Christ and specially who have professed to receive it should with great earnestness set our minds and hearts unto it lest by negligence or unbelief we should lose what we have heard and be as leaking Vessels and be lost our selves 2. For if the word spoken by
but have told you the truth I go before you to prepare for your entertainment 3. Fear not that I should leave you desolate I do not prepare a place for you in vain but will come again and take you and all believers to my self as a glorified Society N. Did not many other Texts assure us of the Souls reception to Christ at our death this would be sad to us and make us think he would not take us to himself till his return to judgment But it being then that our felicity will be consummate in the consummation of the whole Church in one body therefore Christ putteth this promise of the fullest perfection for their comfort 4. And whither I go ye know and the way ye know 4. And you are not utter strangers to the God and Place that I go to or to the way 5. Thomas saith unto him Lord we know not whither thou goest and how can we know the way 6. Jesus saith unto him I am the way and the truth the life no man com●th unto the Father but by me 5 6. It is to the Father I am going And think not carnally of the place or state or way I am your way and Guide and I am the Truth signified by all ceremonial shadows and I am your Life both efficiently directively and finally you must come to God as your end by me as the only way if ever you will be happy 7. If ye had known me ye should have known my Father also and from henceforth ye know him and have seen him 7. You see me in my bodily presence But if you had known me better in my spiritual Being and in the works which I have done by my Fathers power you would better have known my Father also But as you have seen him in me and my works so henceforth you shall know him more 8. Philip saith unto him Lord shew us the Father and it sufficeth us 8. If we might but see the Father it would satisfie us N. Man in flesh would fain live by sight as more satisfying to him than meer faith 9. Jesus saith unto him Have I been so long time with you and yet hast thou not known me Philip He that hath seen me hath seen the Fathet and how sayest thou then Shew us the Father 10. Believest thou not that I am in the Father and the Father in me The words that I speak unto you I speak not of my self but the Father that dwelleth in me he doth the works 9 10. God is invisible and to be seen only in his works effects and appearances And in what or whom canst thou expect to see him more apparently than in me Have I been so long with you and hast thou not seen and known me If thou hast seen me thou hast seen the notifying appearance of the Father And what other sight of the Father canst thou expect Believest thou not that God the Father is so in me and I in him as that he appeareth to the world by me and though his Greatness shine more conspicuously in Sun and Stars Heaven and Earth yet his Holiness Wisdom and ruling Will and his saving Love to sinful man shew themselves most in me in the words that I speak and the works that I do which it is the Father that worketh in me 11. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father in me or else believe me for the very works sake 12. Verily verily I say unto you He that believeth on me the works that I do shall he do also and greater works than these shall he do because I go unto my Father 11. If you will not believe my own testimony believe me for my Works that I am in the Father and acted by him and he is in me and his Power acteth by me And this Power shall be so manifested that I will enable those that believe in me to do greater Miracles than I have done when I ascend to my Father and send down my Spirit on them by which you shall see that I was acted by the Power of the Father 13. And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name that will I do that the Father may be glorified in the Son 14. If ye shall ask any thing in my name I will do it 13. And you shall find by experience in the answer of your Prayers that I am in God and actuate you by his Power For whatever you ask in my name which is fit to be asked and received I will do it as the Mediator between the Father and you that the Father may be glorified in and by the office of my Mediation and Administration When you find that asking in my name procureth your d●sire you may know that it is by me 15. If ye love me keep my commandments 16. And I will pray the Father and he shall give you another Comforter that he may abide with you for ever 17. Even the Spirit of truth whom the world cannot receive because it seeth him not neither knoweth him but ye know him for he dwelleth with you and shall be in you 15 16 17. If you do but love me and shew it by sincere keeping my commandments I will pray the Father and he shall give you the Holy Ghost in an eminent peculiar manner to be a Paraclet or an Agent and Advocate and Intercessor between me and you pleading my Cause with you and the World and pleading your Cause in Prayer with me and my Father To which end he shall as a vital Principle abide with you for ever Even Gods Spirit of Truth who shall teach you the Truth and confute the lying Deceiver The World cannot receive him as an Illuminater and Comforter because not knowing him and being prepossessed with contrary malignant inclinations it resisteth him But he hath in some measure taken possession of you already and ye know and obey him and he dwelleth with you and shall be in you as sent by me and as my Witness 18. I will not leave you comfortless I will come to you 18. Let not my departure too much trouble you I will not leave you as destitute Orphantes but I will rise and see you and when Ascended I will come to you by my Spirit and at last come and take all the Church unto my Glory 19. Yet a little while and the world seeth me no more but ye see me because I live ye shall live also 19. Though I shall shortly depart out of the sight of this World yet ye shall see me For I am your Head and Principle of Life and as I shall live with God in Glory so shall ye live by Communication of Life from me Note Here we have security for the Souls Immortality and Heavenly felicity If Christ live we shall live 20. At that day ye shall know that I
which presageth their destruction 55. But he being full of the holy Ghost looked up stedfastly into heaven and saw the Glory of God and Jesus standing on the right hand of God 56. And said Behold I see the Heavens opened and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God 55 56. God gave him so extraordinary a measure of the Spirit as when he looked stedfastly toward Heaven he had an appearance of the Glory of God and Christ standing at his right hand which in this Rapture he declared to them all Note Christ saw it meet by such a glorious Miracles sight to encourage and honour his first dying Martyr O who would fear suffering for Christ Martyrs may expect the Spirits greatest help and afterward the most glorious Crown 57. Then they cryed out with a loud voyce and stopped their ears and ran upon him with one accord 58. And cast him out of the City and stoned him and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young mans feet whose name was Saul 57 58. Note Holiness and Miracles do but increase their rage They will run when malignity and the Devil instigates Sinners are never so mad as against Christ and Mercy and their own Salvation They that were the Accusers for Blasphemy were by the Law to cast the first stone as the Executioners 59. And they stoned Stephen calling upon God and saying Lord Jesus receive my Spirit 59. Note He that gave up himself to Christ in life and death might comfortably expect to be received 2. The Spirit liveth after the bodies death And Christ receiveth it to himself This is part of Christs Office now in Heaven See my Printed Sermon on this Text. 60. And he kneeled down and cryed with a loud voyce Lord lay not this sin to their charge And when he had said this he fell asleep 6. He died Praying and that for his Persecutors as Christ did And it s like the Conversion of Saul was an answer to this Prayer Quest How far may we pray In Faith for wicked men or others and expect the thing prayed for Answ For that which is absolutely promised we may pray accordingly in assurance For that which supposeth a qualifying condition in the receiver we must believe that they shall have it if they are so qualified For that which hath no promise to them but is merely at Gods unrevealed Will we must pray with submission to that Will and accordingly take the event for uncertain CHAP. VIII ANd Saul was consenting unto his death And at that time there was a great persecution against the Church which was at Jerusalem and they were all scattered abroad throughout the Regions of Judea and Samaria except the Apostles 1. Note Sauls Persecution must be recorded before his Conversion 2. The purest Church was not free from the malice of wicked men 3. God used Malignant Persecutions for the spreading abroad his word 2. And devout men carried Stephen to his burial and made great lamentation over him 2. They made a Funeral for Stephen with solemn mourning 3. As for Saul he made havock of the Church entring into every House and hailing men and women committed them to prison 3. By halling people to Prisons out of their houses Saul wasted the gathered Church 4. Therefore they that were scattered abroad went every where Preaching the word 4. Note It was a tolerable hurt to their bodies which brought good to others Souls and so enlarged the Church by scattering it as seed is scattered that is sown 2. All Christians may and must publish the Gospel where they come if there be need tho only called Ministers must make an office and calling of it as separated to it 5. Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and Preached Christ unto them 5. Philip the Deacon Preacht at the City of Samaria after by Herod called Sebaste 6. And the People with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake hearing and seeing the miracles which he did 7. For unclean Spirits crying with loud voice came out of many that were possessed with them and many taken with palsies and that were lame were healed 8. And there was great joy in that City 6. The Samaritans received the Gospel with great joy convinced by Miracles and pleased by many Cures Note The Gospel where ever it cometh is cause of great joy 9. But there was a certain man called Simon which before time in the same city used sorcery and bewitched the People of Samaria giving out that himself was some great one 10. To whom they all gave heed from the least to the greatest saying This man is the great power of God 11. And to him they had regard because that of long time he had bewitched them with Sorceries 9. One Simon had long been reputed among them some great man even the great power of God as he boasted of himself because by Sorcery he had long bewitched and done some strange things among them And they all admired and regarded him Note Deceivers have usually many followers 12. But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God and the Name of Jesus Christ they were baptized both men and women 12. Note This suddain Baptizing yet implyeth time for instruction and profession of all essential to Christianity 13. Then Simon himself believed also and when he was baptized he continued with Philip and wondered beholding the miracles and signs which were done 13. Simon saw the reality of Philips Miracles being conscious of the fallacy of his own and he believed that Jesus was the Christ and was baptized into his name and stayed with Phillip admiring his works Note 1. Simon had a Superficial opinionative belief that was not clear and sound nor effectual to renew his Soul 2. The Ministers of Christ baptized not as Heart searchers as knowing mens sincerity but as taking their Profession for their title to Baptism 14. Now when the Apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God they sent unto them Peter and John 14. Note As Peter or John were no Rulers of the rest of the Apostles so the rest sent not them as Rulers of them by Vote but by brotherly request and consent 15. Who when they were come down prayed for them that they might receive the holy Ghost 16. For as yet he was fallen upon none of them only they were baptized in the Name of the Lord Jesus 17. Then laid they their hands on them and they received the holy Ghost 15. Note 1. It was at first the eminent Priviledge of the Apostles that the Holy Ghost should be given by their Ministry 2. Imposition of hands being an usual act of Authoritative benediction was used as the sign herein 3. Yet Prayer to God must first prevail for his grant thereof before the Sign was used 4. This gift of the Holy Ghost was not that which is Regenerating and necessary to pardon and Salvation else
of God and Holiness to the love of Carnal Interest and Pleasure and the true state of Spiritual life and Felicity consisteth in the love of God and Holiness and the Souls perfection 7. Because the carnal mind is enmity to God for it is not subject to the law of God neither indeed can be 7. Because the Carnal Unregenerate Mind having a predominant inclination to inferiour sensual interests and delights and a privation yea and enmity to things Spiritual and Holy hath thereby an enmity to the Holy Laws and Ways of God and consequently to God as Holy For it is not subject to the Law of God which is quite against their sinful life and inclination nor indeed can be while it so continueth there being a contrariety between their Inclinations and the Law of God 8. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God 8. So that they that are Unregenerate and Carnal cannot please God while they are such because they cannot through the perverseness of their own Wills do the things that please him what legal restraint soever they be under 9. But ye are not in the flesh but in the Spirit if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ he is none of his 9. But you are not in this Carnal state and under the dominion of the flesh if the Spirit of God do not only provoke you towards goodness but also dwell in you and possess you For it is a powerful Spirit and will overcome the Flesh But if any Man have not this indwelling illuminating quickening sanctifying Spirit he is not a true Christian and saved by Christ He may be baptised and deceive the Church and pass for a visible Member of it and so for a Christian among Men but Christ will not own him as a living Member to Justification and Salvation 10. And if Christ be in you the body is dead because of sin but the Spirit is life because of righteousness 10. And if Christ by his Spirit and Government be and rule in you the Body which hath still some inordinate sinful inclinations and backwardness to good shall die for sin but your Spirits being quickened by the Spirit of God unto Holiness and Justification are in a state of life begun and shall not die as the Body doth but live with Christ by whom they live 11. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you 11. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you he that by this same Spirit of life and power raised up Christ from the dead as he hath begun to rise you from Spiritual death in sin and sanctifie both Soul and Body to himself will not only glorifie your Souls but also raise and save your Mortal Bodies by that same Almighty Spirit which raised Christ and sanctified you 12. Therefore brethren we are debtors not to the flesh to live after the flesh 13. For if ye live after the flesh ye shall die But if ye through the Spirit do mortifie the deeds of the body ye shall live 12 13. By all which you may see that it is not to the Flesh that we owe our chief respect care and obedience nor after the lusts of which we should live For it is this sinful fleshly life that causeth death and tendeth unto future misery But if by the Spirit you mortifie those fleshly lusts and deeds which Carnal Men obey and practise this begining of Spiritual Life will end in future life and happiness 14. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God they are the sons of God 14. For as many as are Principled and Ruled by Gods Spirit and Spiritual Law of Grace are Gods Children And God will not forsake lose or destroy his Spiritual Children 15. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear but ye have received the Spirit of adoption whereby we cry Abba Father 15. For the Spirit which you have now received is not that of a Slave which doth no good but for fear of Punishment and the meer Law without Grace could give no better but you have received the Spirit of Adoption which giveth you an inclination of dependance love and trust in God much like that which a Child hath by nature to his Father to the collation of which Child-like love trust and nature the wondrous revelation of Gods love in Christ and the free gifts of his Grace were Spiritually fitted 16. The Spirit it self beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God 16. And to have this Spirit of God dwelling in us and sanctifying us is a certain evidence or testimony in and with our own Spirits and Consciences that God doth specially love us and take us for his Children having set his special mark upon us For we could not love him as a Father and he not love us as his Children And this Spirit also helpeth our Consciences to discern and exercise this fealing Grace and to rejoyce therein 17. And if children then heirs heirs of God and joynt-heirs with Christ if so be that we suffer with him that we may also be glorified together 17. And if this Seal of the Spirit prove us Sons it proveth us Heirs of the purchased Kingdom or Heavenly Inheritance for such are all the Sons of God Heirs of God and Co-heirs with Christ but so that there is a further condition of our possession even that we take up the cross and follow him submitting to be conformed to him in his sufferings if God call us to it that so by the same way we may come to be glorified together with him 18. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us 18. For though we must suffer in this life with Christ and for his sake and by Gods Correction for our sins having in my reckoning compared them with the promised effects and end I fully resolve the case that they are not worthy to be compared with the Glory which in the Saints shall be shortly manifested nor should they stop any Man from entertaining the Doctrine of the Cross and pursuing his Celestial hopes 19. For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God 19. For all the frame of Nature strongly tending to its own perfection and God annihillateth not the Natural or Sensitive Creatures though he dissolve the Composition they do as it were wait for their better state and deliverance from the Curse caused by Mans sins till the manifestation of the Glory of the Sons of God with whom and for whom they shall have their restauration as with Man they fell under the Curse 20. For the creature
graffed in If the Jews be cut off boast not against them for the Covenant and Gospel was not first given to you that now receive its Benefits but to them and from them to you 19. Thou wilt say then The branches were broken off that I might be graffed in 20. Well because of unbelief they were broken off and thou standest by faith Be not high-minded but fear 19 20. If thou say That God more esteemed me than them because he broke them off that I might be graffed in Be not deceived It was for their own Unbelief and by it and not undeservedly that they were broken off And it is by Faith and not for any Worldly Preeminence that thou art graffed in Therefore be not pufft up but fear that Sin that cut off them 21. For if God spared not the natural branches take heed left he also spare not thee 21. For if God cast off them with whom he first made the Covenant of Peculiarity take heed of sinning as they did by Pride and Unbelief against his Gospel lest he also cut off thee 22. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God on them which fell severity but towards thee goodness if thou continue in his goodness otherwise thou also shalt be cut off 22. Rather here reverently admire Gods Goodness and Severity On the sinful rejected Jews Severity of Justice but Mercy to thee which shall continue if thou continue in the Faith and Obedience and Gratitude him Otherwise thou also shalt be cut off As alas most of the Eastern Churches are 23. And they also if they abide not still in unbelief shall be graffed in for God is able to graff them in again 23. And God hath not excluded them from the Grace of the Gospel so as to make their Recovery impossible If they be converted from the Unbelief which God can effect they shall be graffed into the Catholick Church 24. For if thou wert cut of the olive-tree which is wild by nature and wert graffed contrary to nature into a good olive-tree how much more shall these which be the natural branches be graffed into their own olive-tree 24. For if thou wert cut off from the Wild Olive-tree which was natural to thee and besides or above Nature and contrary to thy Desert wast taken into Gods Covenant and Church how much more will God take them in when they believe who were Abraham's natural Seed and first in his Covenant 25. For I would not brethren that you should be ignorant of this mystery lest ye should be wise in your own conceits that blindness in part is hapned to Israel untill the fulness of the Gentiles be come in 26. And so all Israel shall be saved 25 26. For I would not have you ignorant of this Mystery of God's Providence lest Ignorance puff you up with false Self-conceits That part of the Jews are now left in this Blindness till the Gentile Churches be advanced to an Honourable State and Fulness And then all the Israel of God the true faithful Seed of Abraham and therein the main Body of the Jews shall make up the Catholick Church and be saved from their State of Unbelief 26. As it is written There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob. 26. As Isa 59.20 it was prophesied That out of Sion a Saviour should arise for Israel to turn them from iniquity 27. For this is my Covenant unto them when I shall take away their sins 27. As he saith That his Covenant made with them is to take away their Sin 28. As concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake but as touching the election they are beloved for the fathers sakes 28. For your Conversion they were permitted as Enemies to Christ to drive away the Gospel from them to you But yet God hath not quite nulled his Covenant with their Fathers but will perform it in the Conversion of all of them that are Elect. 29. For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance 29. For God is not mutable and will not for the Sin of these Men forget his Covenant with their Fathers but will yet perform it in the full sense of it and not repent of it and null it 30. For as you in times past have not believed God yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief 31. Even so have these also now not believed that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy 30 31. For as you were formerly in unbelief and disobedient and yet now are converted by occasion of their Unbelief so the unbelieving Jews shall be brought by Mercy into the Church by the Preaching that shall be sent from the Gentile-Churches and by the Power and Glory of the Church under Christian Emperours and Governours and by your good Example 32. For God hath concluded them all inunbelief that he might have mercy upon all 32. For God in Justice and Wisdom hath for a time left the main Body of the Jews in Unbelief as formerly he did the Gentiles that in his time he might in mercy call in the main Body of them into the Catholick Church as he hath done you 33. O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and his ways past finding out 33. When we think of these mysterious Providences of God freely shewing Mercy to the Unworthy and permitting presuming Men to miscarry and yet making use of their Sin for good we should be so far from questioning God's Mercy or Justice herein that we should admire the depth of the Riches of his Wisdom whose Judgments are unsearchable and his Counsels and Ways not to be traced and fitly judged of by the Wit of Man 34. For who hath known the mind of the Lord or who hath been his counsellor 35. Or who hath first given to him and it shall be recompensed unto him again 34 35. How little know Men of the Mind of God Nothing but what he freely tells them He is not guided by the Counsel of Man nor is Man acquainted with his secret Counsels Who can oblige him to recompense by his Gifts or hath any thing but what God giveth him 36. For of him and through him and to him are all things to whom be glory for ever Amen 36. For as all Creatures have three sorts of extrinsick Causes viz. the Efficient Dirigent and Final God is all these the Chief Efficient Chief Dirigent and Chief Final Cause of all things All is Of him By him and To him and he of None He is All in All things And as he made and doth all things for his Glory his Glory shall for ever shine forth in all which Angels and Saints shall intelligently see and praise for ever Amen ANNOTATIONS THe great Doubt about this Chapter is what is prophesies of the full Conversion of the Jews Concerning which I shall onely speak so much as is certain and leave the rest to
than with punishing Power to delivet any offenders to Satan as Gods Executioner on their bodies CHAP. V. 1. IT is reported commonly that there is fornication among you and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles that one should have his fathers wife 1. It is not a doubtful Fame but a credible Report that there is such Fornication among you as Civil Heathens do abhor that one should have his Fathers Wife 2. And ye are puffed up and have not rather mourned that he that hath done this deed may be taken away from among you 2. And you have made light of it and not as sensible of the Sin and Shame bewailed it that he that is impenitent in this Sin may be cut off from your Society 3. For I verily as absent in body but present in spirit have judged already as though I were present concerning him that hath so done this deed 4. In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ when ye are gathered together and my spirit with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ 5. To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus 3 4 5. For though I be absent in Body yet present in Spirit I have by the Power given me by Christ determined already when you are assembled and my Spirit with you to deliver this Man to Satan by casting him out of the Church and leaving him to Gods Executioner to inflict destructive Punishment on his Body to bring him to Repentance for the saving of his Soul Note 1. That Paul himself was the Judge 2. Yet he would do it when they were assembled for Order to shew them what they should have done 3. That it was in a Church-assembly of Men present for holy Communion and not in a Lay-Court or a Consistory of the Pastors of other Assemblies who knew not the Man nor had any special Over-sight of him 4. That Satan is Gods Executioner on the Bodies even of Christians specially of Sins to Death The Church having then no Christian Magistrates was put to appeal to God to punish Capital Crimes miraculously 5. That yet this is to save the Sinner by Repentance as well as to be a Warning to others 6. Your glorying is not good Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump 6. You do not well to bear up such a Man in his Sin and to make light of it The whole Church so far as it 's guilty of such a Conniving or Consent is thus defiled with Guilt and may be tempted to the like Sin 7. Purge out therefore the old leaven that ye may be a new lump as ye are unleavened For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us 7. As the Jews when they kept the Passover were to cast all Leavened Bread out of their Houses so we assemble to commemorate the Sacrifice of Christ our Paschal Lamb. Purge out of your Assemblies the old Leaven of scandalous Sins that you may approve your selves a Society acceptable to God through Christ Note 1. That as Dr. Hammond observes out of Chrysostom and Theodoret there was a Tradition that this Offender was a Bishop 2. And the Assembly was to purge the Church of such a one whoever he was by forsaking him 8. Therefore let us keep the feast not with old leaven neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth 8. Therefore let our Christian Assemblies be kept as holy Feasts before God not with the Vices of our old Natural or Heathen State nor with the odious Leaven of Naughtiness and Wickedness but with the Unleavened Bread of Purity Sincerity and Truth 9. I wrote to you in an epistle not to company with fornicators 10. Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world or with the covetous or extortioners or with Idolaters for then must ye needs go out of the world 9 10. I did indeed write to you before in this or some other Epistle to avoid Familiarity with Fornicators Covetous Extortioners Idolaters c. I meant that you shew your abhorrence of this Sin and shame the Sinner by shunning his Company when it is unnecessary and it is in your power so to do But I meant not that you should have no Company or Converse at all with any that are such for you live among Unbelievers and cannot go out of the World 11. But now I have written unto you not to keep company if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator or covetous or an idolater or a railer or a drunkard or an extortioner with such an one no not to eat 11. But my Meaning and your Duty is That you shun all Company which may signifie owning or Brotherly Familiarity with any called Christians who are such scandalous Sinners that the Church and Religion may not be thought to favour them and that Shame may humble them And though it belong not to every Christian but to the Church to cast such out of Publick Societies nor to separate from the Church because such are there yet as the Church ought to purge out such so every private Man should avoid that Familiarity which is in their power even that which lieth in Friendly Eating or the like 12. For what have I to do to judge them also that are without Do not ye judge them that are within 12. For we are not authorised to call those without the Church before us to try and judge their Cases who never submitted to our Authority and are not a Scandal to the Christian Profession It is them that have consented to our Power and Discipline that you judge 13. But them that are without God judgeth Therefore put away from among your selves that wicked person 13. Those that are without the Church we must leave to the Judgment of God they are not under our Government But that wicked Person who is as one of you disown and put away from your Communion CHAP. VI. 1. DAre any of you having a matter against another go to law before the unjust and not before the saints 1. Another Scandal I hear of among you is That you go to Law against one another before Heathen Judges when you might decide your Differences among your selves How dare you do this when Heathens are unjust and will deride you 2. Do ye not know that the saints shall judge the world And if the world shall be judged by you are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters 2. Know ye not that Christ will commit that Honour to his Saints with him to judge the World of the Ungodly And you should be all Saints your selves And if the World shall be judged by you are you not meet to decide your own little Differences 3. Know ye not that we shall judge angels How much more things that pertain to this life 3. And as Christ is the Judge of the
Wilderness 6. Now these things were our examples to the intent we should not lust after evil things as they also lusted 6. Now these were admonishing Types to us and written to warn us that we lust not after forbidden gratifying of the Flesh as they did If they are accused as lusting in the Wilderness for Flesh when they had onely Manna for forty years what excess of Lust is it in them that take it for their Liberty and Wisdom to serve their Flesh and Appetite to the scandal of others by their ill Example 7. Neither be ye idolaters as were some of them as it is written The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play 7. And take warning by them and do not partake of Idols Feasts and make a sport of that which God is jealous in 8. Neither let us commit fornication as some of them committed and fell in one day three and twenty thousand 8 And take warning by their Destruction Num. 25.1 2 3. to avoid Fornication which some of you make light of 9. Neither let us tempt Christ as some of them also tempted and were destroyed of serpents 9. And be warned by their Plagues that you make not your Fleshly Lusts and your impatience of Sufferings to be the Law and Measure of your Expectations from God as if he must needs do what your Flesh would have him and allow you to do what you desire 10. Neither murmur ye as some of them also murmured and were destroyed of the destroyer 10. And let not the Life of Self-denial and Sufferings in the Flesh which Christ calls you to provoke you to murmur and be impatient under the Cross or weary of Christianity lest you be destroyed by the Executioners of Gods Justice as they were by the Plague 11. Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples and they are written for our admonition upon whom the ends of the world are come 11. The History of them and their Sins and Punishments are written for the use of all following Generations even for us that live in the last Age of the World to warn us to avoid the like 12. Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall 12. Therefore in stead of Self-conceitedness and Self-confidence let even those that think best of themselves for Wisdom and Stability take heed lest they fall to Sin and Misery 13. There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man but God is faithful who will not suffer you to be tempted above that you are able but will with the temptation also make a way to escape that ye may be able to bear it 13. There hath yet no tempting Trial befallen you but such as Men in your State of Humanity ordinarily undergo so that your Sufferings have been no justification of any self-saving Compliance with Idolaters And you have no cause to distrust God for the time to come for he is faithful and will not let your Trials be intolerable but with the Trial will shew you a safe passage out of it at last that by the forefight of that and the breyity you may be able to undergo it 14 15. Wherefore my dearly beloved flee from idolatry I speak as to wise men judge ye what I say 14 15. As you plead for Wisdom I will suppose I speak to Men of Wisdom who can judge of Reason and I offer the Reason of my Exhortation to your wisest Judgment 16. The cup of blessing which we bless is it not the communion of the blood of Christ The bread which we break is it not the communion of the body of Christ 16. Is not our Communion in the Lords Supper in Wine and Bread blessed a common Reception Sacramentally of the Blood and the Body of Christ Do we not join in a professed Reception of these communicated to us by Christ 17. For we being many are one bread and one body for we are all partakers of that one bread 17. For we that are many Persons are one Church or Body of Christ by Covenant-union with him the Bread of Life of whom we all Sacramentally and professed'y partake as many Grains of Corn make one Loaf and many Members one Body 18. Behold Israel after the flesh are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar 18. Do not they that eat of the Sacrifices of the Jews thereby profess Worship to the God they sacrifice to 19. What say I then that the idol is any thing or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing 20. But I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice they sacrifice to devils and not to God and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils 19 20. And now do not we know as well as others that an Idol or Image is nothing but Wood Stone Gold c. and that the Meat that is offered them is not in it self at all changed from what it was But I say that it is Devils that seduce the Heathens to this Idolatry and Devils whom they thereby obey and Devils whom they worship as supposed Demi-gods there represented and consequentially Devils with whom they have this Federal Communion And I would not have you Christians to be Subjects and Communicants with Devils 21. Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of devils ye cannot be partakers of the Lords table and of the table of devils 21. Think not that you may do both You cannot lawfully acceptably or effectually Sacramentally and Federally communicate in the Blood and Body of Christ or receive that sacred Cup and Bread and be made Members of him and his Church and also communicate in the Federal Sacrifices to Devils no not with your Bodies though you never so much despise them in your Hearts 22. Do we provoke the Lord to jealousie are we stronger then he 22. Shall we provoke God by that which in the Second Commandment and often he hath told us he will be a jealous Avenger of Are we strong enough to overcome him or to bear the Wrath of the Almighty 23. All things are lawful for me but all things are not expedient all things are lawful for me but all things edifie not 23. As I am from under Moses's Law and not bound by it as such so also I know that all Meats are in themselves now clean and lawful to me But lawful things may be used contrary to the Will of God the Ends of Christianity and the Edification of others and the Law of Christ forbiddeth us so to use them 24. Let no man seek his own but every man anothers wealth 24. We are bound by Christ to love others as our selves and therefore not to prefer our own small and bodily Interest or Safety before the spiritual greater Good of others nor to do only what we think best for our selves but also what is best for others especially for the Church of Christ 25. Whatsoever
the man created for the woman but the woman for the man 9. And so God made the Woman after to be a meet Help for the Man and not the Woman first and then the Man as a Helper to her Though they must now be mutual Helpers 10. For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels 10. Therefore the Woman ought to be vailed to signifie her subjection to the Power of Man yea and especially her Reverence to the Ministers of God and perhaps of the Angels that are Spectators of the Church assembles Doctrinally both are true though which is here meant cannot be proved 11. Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman neither the woman without the man in the Lord. 11. Yet Men have no Being but by Women nor without Men do Women exist or propagate and this is by the Ordination of the Lord. 12. For as the woman is of the man even so is the man also by the woman but all things of God 12. For as at the first Creation the Woman was taken out of the Man so in Generation the Man is of the Woman and all things are of God 13. Judge in your selves is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered 13. The signification of being uncovered being by Custom a Note Superiority judge in your selves whether such be decent for a Woman at the Churches Prayers 14. Doth not even nature it self teach you that if a man have long hair it is a shame unto him 14. And when common Custom hath made the wearing of Hair at length the Note of the Female Sex doth not Nature it self tell you that it is a shame for a Man to be so like a Woman when God forbiddeth us so much as to be cloathed as Women to confound the Sexes which must needs be visibly distinguished 15. But if a woman have long hair it is a glory to her for her hair is given her for a covering 15. But Use t●lls us that for Women to let their Hair grow out at length is a signification of Modesty as a kind of Covering and so is decent to them 16. But if any man seem to be contentious we have no such custom neither the churches of God 16. But if any will contentiously dispute against what I say though I would make no greater a matter of such things than the nature of them requireth let this Answer suffice to resolve sober Minds The Custom of all the Churches is against Womens being uncovered as an unseemly thing and you should not easily be different from all the Churches in a Matter which depends on the Signification of an Action which Use and common Opinion must interpret We that must be as concordant as we can must not affect dissimilitude 17. Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not that you come together not for the better but for the worse 17. But about your Church-Assemblies I have a greater matter of which I must blame you that you come together for holy Communion not as you ought but in sinful sort 18. For first of all when ye come together in the church I hear that there be divisions among you and I partly believe it 18. For first when your coming together in one Church to profess Union and Communion as Members of one Body in holy Love yet I hear credibly that you even there shew your Divisions and are of dissenting Minds and Parties and Practices 19. For there must be also heresies among you that they which are approved may be made manifest among you 19. For God will permit Heresies or Sects and Divisions to arise among you to try you that it may be seen who are sound well setled approved Christians when the Chaff flieth away 20. When ye come together therefore into one place this is not to eat the Lords supper 21. For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper and one is hungry and another is drunken 20 21. When you meet in one place as a Church to profess Unity in Christ it is not like the Supper of the Lord which is a holy Feast of Sacramental Unity where all had the same Food and the same Sacramental Body and Blood of Christ For you first bring to the Church every one his own Supper for himself instead of a Common Feast of Love and the Rich eat and drink to the full and the Poor are hungry 22. What have ye not houses to eat and to drink in or despise ye the church of God and shame them that have not What shall I say to you shall I praise you in this I praise you not 22. If you must d●ffer according to your Riches do it in your own Houses and pretend not a holy Love-Feast in such Disparities and abuse not Church-Assemblies and Feasts by your Fulness and uncharitable Propriety and shame not the Poor that should be Feasted with you This is a Practice worthy to be blamed in you 23. For I have received of the Lord that which I also delivered unto you that the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread 24. And when he had given thanks he brake it and said Take eat this is my body which is broken for you this do in remembrance of me 23 24. For I have not taught you of my own invention the Doctrine of the Sacrament but I received it from Christ partly by them that were present and partly by his inspiration to wit that the same night in which he was c. Note 1. It was Bread that he took it was Bread which he brake after Thanksgiving or Benediction it was Bread which he gave them 2. Yet it was his Body which he gave them Sacramentally and Relatively As the same thing which is material●y Gold and Silver may formally be the Kings Coyn and Current Money or a badge of Honour or the Kings Image c. 3. That Christ gave it them together plurally and bid them take it as personal applyers each to himself 4. That it is his Will and Institution that this use should be continued to the Church in commemoration of his sacrificed Body and Blood 25. After the same manner also he took the cup when he had supped saying This cup is the new testament in my blood this do ye as oft as ye drink it in remembrance of me 25. So also he took the Cup after Supper saying The Wine in this Cup is by Sacramental signification my Blood as it purchaseth as a Sacrifice and sealeth the New Covenant or Statute Use it thus frequently in your holy Communion in remembrance of my Bloodshed 26. For as often as ye eat this bread and drink this cup ye do shew the Lords death till he come 26. For by the frequent use of this Bread and Cup ye are to represent and declare the Sacrificing of Christ for our Sins till he come in Glory 27. Wherefore whosoever shall eat
this bread and drink this cup of the Lord unworthily shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 27. And it being so sacred an Institution for so high a Use whoever shall profane it and use it but as common Food or contrary to the holy Ends of it which is the signification of Gods Love to us by the Sacrifice of Christ for our Sins and our Signification and Covenant of Love and Union with him and one another he partaketh in Guilt with them that despise and crucifie him 28. But let a man examine himself and so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup. 28. But let Men try and examine themselves whether their Hearts and Practice do answer the necessary Ends of this holy Institution coming to it as reverent Partakers of the Sacramental or Representative Sacrificed Body and Blood of Christ in the penitent and believing sense of their Sin and need of a Saviour and of his pardoning and healing Grace trusting the Hopes of their Salvation on him and sincerely renewing their Self-dedication to him and Covenant of New Obedience to him in Love and Unity with his Church even all sincere Believers and so let them comfortably herein communicate 29. For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily eateth and drinketh damnation to himself not discerning the Lords body 29. For he that eateth and drinketh otherwise than thus that is profanely and not to the Ends of the Institution doth but draw Judgment on himself in stead of Grace 30. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you and many sleep 30. For this very Sin of Profaning the holy Ordinance God hath inflicted on many of you Weakness and Sickness and Death on some For God useth Paternal Castigation Justice and Punishments even on his Family 31. For if we would judge our selves we should not be judged 31. And if we would examine and judge our selves and so come to this Feast as true penitent Believers with a right Intent and holy Reverence we should escape such castigatory Penalties and the Judgment of God 32. But when we are judged we are chastened of the Lord that we should not be condemned with the world 32. But these Judgments of God on his Family are not by destructive Revenge but Fatherly Chastisements to bring us to Repentance that we may not be condemned with the unholy World 33. Wherefore my brethren when ye come together to eat tarry one for another 33. Wherefore as Brethren do all in that impartial Unity and Love as answereth your Profession and Christs Institution and not in Selfishness Division or Prophaneness 34. And if any man hunger let him eat at home that ye come not together unto condemnation And the rest will I set in order when I come 34. Let the hungry eat at home and not disorder the sacred Communion and use it carnally or as a common Feast and that with uncharitable inequality lest your prophanation of so holy a thing bring down Gods Judgments on you As for other Points of Church Order I will determine them when I come ANNOTATIONS I. AS to the Custom of Men and Womens Covering and Hair mentioned ver 13 14 c. 1. It is certain that the Significancy is the thing that must decide the Case and that as Words so this Action is an arbitrary Sign and depends on the Custom and Opinion of the Country as the Expositor And that with us where Mens being uncovered signifieth Reverence and Submission to a Superiour the Case quite differeth from that of the Corinthians 2. And yet the Custom is so common in most Nations for Women to wear their Hair at full length and Men to cut it that it seems there is somewhat in Nature that tendeth to this difference as there is in Kneeling and Prostration to shew Humiliation and Submission And to consound the Difference of Sexes in Habits is a great Sin tending to Debauchery and to hide unclean and Beastly Conversation And therefore though a Man may in such things of themselves indifferent do as the worst do in an undecent Fashion to aovid some greater Evil as among Thieves or Persecutors to escape unknown as one may wear Womens Clothes to escape from unjust Imprisonment or Death yet sober godly Persons should not without such necessity imitate the Fashions which are the Ensigns of Pride Debauchery or any sinful self-distinguishing sort of Men or Women Apply this to our Case of Mens wearing great Periyuks and that of Womens Hair who sell it for that use and to the Fashion of Womens naked Breasts and Gowns with long superfluous Trains while the Poor want necessary Cloathing c. What would Paul have said if any of these had been then the Case II. It is a most doleful Case that Satan hath prevailed to turn this sacred Institution of Christs Supper into the matter of bloody Contention with s●me and of uncomfortable distracting Scruples and Fears with others when as Christ ordained it to be the firm Bond of constant Love and Unity and the great Comfort of the Souls of penitent Believers 1. On one side by over-doing in the Dogmatical and Ceremonious part it is turned into the Monsters of Transubstantiation the Priests Communion alone while the People look on a half Sacrament without the Cup a Latin Mass not understood a Real Sacrifice offered for the Dead in stead of a Representative Commemorative Sacrifice the Adoration of Bread as God supposed to be no Bread but the Body of God indeed c. And it 's made an Engine to wrack Mens Consciences and tear the Church by excommunicating all that dare not Conform to all the Dresses which usurping Domination hath painted this Sacrament withal And the Blood of Christs faithful Servants is shed for not following all these Opinions and antick Ceremonies that the Sacrifice of Christs Body and Blood is abused by So that alas how many Churches are torn and persecute one another for not using this Sacrament of Love and Communion according to those Devices of Men which Peter or Paul never used or approved 2. On the other side many godly Persons quite misunderstanding the Words of Paul about unworthy receiving come with such an excess of Reverence and Fear lest they eat and drink their own Damnation that either they seldom venture to Communicate which the old Christians did oftner than every Lords Day or else they are more terrified far than comforted And looking that God should suddenly comfort them in the very Act of Receiving while they fight against their own Comforts by Mistakes and unbelieving Fears when they feel not their Expectation answered they are ready to despair as having received unworthily And should they do so by Prayer and Hearing what a Torment and Slavery would they make of Religion by their Errour 3. And yet the Ignorant and Ungodly who truly receive unworthily can from the bare doing of the outward Act steal to themselves that deceitful Comfort by which they are
variety of Members 21. And the eye cannot say unto the hand I have no need of thee nor again the head to the feet I have no need of you 21. As the principal Members of the Body need the less principal so the Rulers Pastors and wisest Members of the Church need even those weak and inferiour Christians whom surly Censurers and proud or contentious Usurpers will cast out 22. Nay much more those members of the body which seem to be more feeble are necessary 22. Yea the Parts which are least honoured and feeble have a peculiar necessary Office which none of the rest is able to perform or supply 23. And those members of the body which we think to be less honourable upon these we bestow more abundant honour and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness 23. And those Parts which we account shameful we most carefully clothe and cover to hide either Deformity or Shame and do not reproach neglect or cast away 24. For our comely parts have no need but God hath tempered the body together having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked 25. That there should be no schism in the body but that the members should have the same care one for another 24 25. Our comely Parts need not our care to adorn and cover them from Shame But God hath so contempered the Parts that we should more care to secure from dishonour the Parts that need our care That Unity and Love of the Whole should cause such Love and Care for every Part that the Parts should not envy or strive against or cut off or divide from one another Note 1. O how clean contrary to this are the tearing Canons and Cruelties that cut off all Members that think any of their needless Impositions unlawful 2. And here Paul tells us the true Cause of Schism Not Weakness of Christians but the Butchery of that Clergy that cut off the Weak when they should carefully hide their Dishonour in Love and that revile them whom they should love as themselves 26. And whether one member suffer all the members suffer with it or one member be honoured all the members rejoyce with it 26. As all the Body condoleth or rejoiceth with the pain or welfare of every Member even the weakest so is it with the Living Members of Christ Note Therefore they are but Hypocrites like Wooden Legs that have no such sense and trayterous Enemies of Christ that hate and reproach and destroy his true Members 27. Now ye are the body of Christ and members in particular 27. Thus must it be with you that are the several Members of Christs Church 28. And God hath set some in the church first apostles secondarily prophets thirdly teachers after that miracles then gifts of healing helps governments diversities of tongues 28. And God hath set in his Church Diversity and Disparity both in qualifying Gifts and Offices As in the first place are Apostles sent immediately by Christ to be the Chief Witnesses and Recorders of his Works and Words Next them Prophets immediately inspired to reveal his W●ll And next them setled Teachers of his Record●d Word And then Workers of Miracles for convi●cing Infidels and confirming Believers Then extraordinary Gifts of Healing and eminent Helpers of the Churches by Charity and special Care especially for Ministers and the Poor and Governments to arbitrate Differences and keep Order and Languages to spread and confirm the Word 29 30. Are all apostles are all prophets are all teachers are all workers of miracles Have all the gifts of healing do all speak with tongues do all interpret 31. But covet earnestly the best gifts 29 30 31. None of all these Gifts or Offices are common to all But desire most that which is best and most edifying Note That even Apostles are but Chief Members and Peter himself not the Head but one of them 31. And yet shew I unto you a more excellent way 31. Yet true Christian Love excelleth all these Gifts and Offices CHAP. XIII 1. THough I speak with the tongues of men and of angels and have not charity I am become as sounding brass or a tinkling cymbal 1. Lest you should too much trust to any of these forementioned Gifts which Christ giveth to some that perish you must know that the true Divine Nature proper to Saints consisteth in Charity which is the predominant Love of God and of Saints as Saints and Men as Men as God is in them and served by them And if I be without this could I preach discourse and pray in better Language and Oratory than any mortal Man even as well as Angels what were this Voice to God that is a Spirit and looketh to the Heart but even as the tinkling of a Musical Instrument 2. And though I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and though I have all faith so that I could remove mountains and have no charity I am nothing 2. And though I could speak by Inspiration as Balaam did of things present or things to come and could understand all the deep and difficult Points in Gods Word and Works and were the most excellent Philosopher and could truly open all the Principles and Compositions in Nature and though I could believe even to the Production of the most miraculous Effects and yet have not this predominant Love of God and of Saints and of Men as to Gods Acceptance and my own Salvation I am as a meer Nothing None of these Shadows will do my Work 3. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor and though I give my body to be burned and have not charity it profiteth me nothing 3. And though I give all that I have to the Poor either to be well spoken of or through fear of Hell or a conceit of obliging God by Merit or out of meer natural Pity or any other Cause which includeth not Love it will not profit me to Salvation Yea if for these lower Ends I should forsake Life it self without the predominant Love of God and Man it would be as nothing to me 4. Charity suffereth long and is kind charity envieth not charity vaunteth not it self is not puffed up 4. Love is kind inclining to do good and is patient and can bear much wrong from others as Self-love maketh us bear much more from our selves Love envieth not the Reputation Applause Precedency or Profit of others Love doth not vaunt and lift up a Mans self in his own esteem or desire to be lifted up by others above our Worth and Place but in Honour preferreth others 5. Doth not behave it self unseemly seeketh not her own is not easily provoked thinketh no evil 5. Love doth not break out into injurious Reflexions or Passions or uncomely Deportment towards others It is not selfish and seeketh not our own inordinately to the injury neglect or greater hurt of others Is not provoked to any uncharitable thought word or deed by
and extraordinary Knowledge and Vertue 15. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness whose end shall be according to their works 15. Therefore it is not an incredible thing that Men should be really the Devils Ministers animated and taught by him to do his Work against the Interest of Christ and Truth and Godliness and yet pretend to go beyond Christs own Apostles in preaching Righteousness Wisdom and Godliness Note That the Pretenses of Truth Orthodoxness Righteousness Free Grace Unity Peace c are no sufficient Evidences of true Ministers The Devils Ministers may pretend them all and may cry down Christs Ministers as Carnal Hereticks Legal Schismaticks c. 16. I say again let no man think me a fool if otherwise yet as a fool receive me that I may boast my self a little 16. Take it not for Folly to vindicate my Ministry But if you do yet hear me try and judge Note That Paul meaneth that Boasting is the usual mark of a Fool but it is no Folly when the Interest of God and Souls require it It was seemingly not really his Folly 17. That which I speak I speak it not after the Lord but as it were foolishly in this confidence of boasting 17. That which I speak of my self I speak not as I do the Gospel by Inspiration and I confess that materially it hath the appearance of Folly in ostentation 18 19 20. Seing that many glory after the flesh I will glory also For ye suffer fools gladly seeing ye your selves are wise For ye suffer if a man bring you into bondage if a man devour you if a man take of you if a man exalt himself if a man smite you on the face 18 19 20. You can easily bear with a Fool because you are wise your selves So bear with me while I do that necessarily which they do vainly You can bear with greater Provocations even with them that would captivate you to Errour and the Law and would make a Prey of you and make themselves your Lords and Masters and abuse you 21. I speak as concerning reproach as though we had been weak howbeit whereinsoever any is bold I speak foolishly I am bold also 21. I speak of them that reproach me of contemptible Weakness Though I confess that Boasting usually signifieth Folly I will say that I have as much as they to boast of Note That Paul is so cautelous lest any by his Example should be tempted by proud Boasting that materially he calls it Folly though formally it was not so in him 22 23. Are they Hebrews so am I are they Israelites so am I are they the seed of Abraham so am I Are they ministers of Christ I speak as fool I am more in labours more abundant in stripes above measure in prisons more frequent in deaths oft 22 23. They boast that they are Hebrews Israelites Abraham's Seed and Ministers of Christ And am not I so too Yea though my Words be like those of a Fool I say that I have laboured and suffered more for Christ by Stripes Prisons and daily dying than they have done 24. Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one 25. Thrice was I beaten with rods once was I stoned thrice I suffered shipwrack a night and a day I have been in the deep 24 25 Scourged by the Jews to the utmost seve●ity beaten by the Romans stoned by the Rabble thrice shipwrack'd a Night and a Day in some darksom dangerous Passage at Sea or a Dungeon so called as some think 26 27. In journing often in perils of waters in perils of robbers in perils by mine own countrymen in perils by the heathen in perils in the city in perils in the wilderness in perils in the sea in perils among false brethren in weariness and painfulness in watchings often in hunger and thirst in fastings often in cold and nakedness 26 27 Note That the Sufferings which deter Carnal Men from Religion by Shame and Fear are the Honour of Believers 28. Besides those things that are without that which cometh upon me daily the care of all the churches 28. Besides the things that are without my Body even the Case of all the Churches which are my daily Care 29. Who is weak and I am not weak who is offended and I burn not 29. Every Mans Weakness and Sufferings are to me as my own The danger of the Tempted and Scandalised is my pain and care for their preservation 30. If I must needs glory I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities 30. If you will put me to boast it shall be of that which worldly Men will turn to my reproach not of any Preeminence but of my Sufferings 31. The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ which is blessed for evermore knoweth that I lie not 32. In Damascus the governour under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garison desirous to apprehend me 33. And through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall and escaped his hands 1. Note That through all this Chapter Paul calls his Boasting Folly not formally and really but materially and seemingly because it's Fools that boast unnecessarily when the false Apostles made it his Duty 2. Note That it was no small Quarrel of Brethren like that of Barnabas which put him upon all this Apology which else would not have savoured of Humility But it was the Intrusion and envious Accusation of such Jewish Heretical false Apostles as he calleth the Ministers of Satan who endeavoured to subvert the Gospel and by disgracing him to frustrate all his Labours and destroy the Church It 's like to be those called Nicolatians Rev. 2. 3. CHAP. XII IT is not expedient for me doubtless to glory I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord. 1. I know that boasting is unseemly for an humble Minister of Christ but seeing it is put upon me I proceed to a higher Matter even Visions and Revelations from God 2. I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago whether in the body I cannot tell or whether out of the body I cannot tell God knoweth such an one caught up to the third heaven 3. And I knew such a man whether in the body or out of the body I cannot tell God knoweth 4. How that he was caught up into paradise and heard unspeakable words which it is not lawful for a man to utter 2 3 4. I knew a Man that was acted by the Spirit of Christ above himself who above fourteen years ago whether Bodily or onely by mental Extasie and Rapture I know not God knoweth was caught up to that Place of Glory called the Third Heavens and caught up there into Paradise a Place of Joys and heard that which neither can nor must be uttered being unsuitable to the Ears of Mortals and proper to Possessors 5. Of such an one will I glory
you have brought all your Churches into danger of defection 10. I have confidence in you through the Lord that you will be none otherwise minded but he that troubleth you shall bear his judgment whosoever he be 10. I trust God will keep the Churches from revolting but those Persons whoever they be that by Seduction trouble and endanger you shall not escape Gods Judgment and our just Rebukes and Censures 11. And I brethren if I yet preach circumcision why do I yet suffer persecution then is the offence of the cross ceased 11. And as for me what need I suffer much if I could conform to the Judaism which these Men would impos● And then how are we still bound to take up the Cross and suffer with and for Christ These Conditions imposed by Christ on those that will reign with him are then ceased and the Church is no more a persecuted Society Note That the Jews who took themselves to be not onely Gods peculiar but his only People and thought all others contemptible and profane were yet far greater Persecuters than the Heathens and that as in zeal for God and his Law And so are the Worldly Papal Tyrannical Clergy at this day who appropriate the Name of the Church to themselves 12. I would they were even cut off which trouble you 12. The hurt that these Men do who would unsettle and pervert you is so great that I would they were even cut off from the Church if upon personal Admonition they repent not and so left to Gods Judgment who oft maketh Satan his Executioner on such Mens Bodies 13. For brethren ye have been called unto liberty only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh but by love serve one another 13. Christ hath called you to a State of Freedom from Mosaical Rites and from the Curse Use it therefore thankfully but yet abuse it not to any Sin to despise the weak that yet scruple the forsaking of those Rites or to serve any Carnal Lust or Interest as if you had liberty to sin 14. For all the law is fulfilled in one word even in this Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thy self 14. You are still under a Law but it is the Law of Love which in the Duties which you owe to Man is fulfilled if you do but love your Neighbours as your selves supposing that you love your selves with a well-guided Love 15. But if ye bite and devour one another take heed that ye be not consumed one of another 15. But if Selfishness and Faction conquer Brotherly Love and set you on hurting one another you will stir up those whom you hurt to Self-defence and Revenge and make your selves so many Enemies that you will be consumed each of other Note How sottish or malignant are they that preach down Love and Gentleness and preach to stir up Men to Wrath Hatred and Hurtfulness that they consider not this and lay it not to heart with fear 16. This I say then Walk in the Spirit and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh 16. If you say That without the Law there will be no restraint of fleshly Sins I say Walk in the Spirit of Christ that is by his Spiritual Law and his Spirits sanctifying Inclinations and then you will overcome your fleshly Lusts without the Carnal Rites and Corporal Penalties of that Law 17. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh and these are contrary the one to the other so that ye cannot do the things that ye would 17. For the Flesh and Spirit are more contrary than the Flesh and Moses's Political and Ritual Law It is the Spirit that the Flesh lusteth against and it is the Spirit that is contrarily inclined and must overcome it These contrary Inclinations keep you in such imperfection that you cannot be as good and blameless as you would be and therefore Grace must pardon you 18. But if ye be led by the Spirit ye are not under the law 18. But if the sanctifying Spirit of Christ be it that ruleth you then as you are above the childish Rites so you so far are above the need of terrifying Penalties for Love will be your powerful Principle 19 20. Now the works of the flesh are manifest which are these Adultery fornication uncleanness lasciviousness idolatry witchcraft hatred variance emulations wrath strife seditions heresies 21. Envyings murders drunkenness revellings and such like of the which I tell you before as I have also told you in time past that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God 19 20 21. Perhaps you 'll say How shall we know Sin but by the Law To which I say That they being Works of the Flesh against true Reason and the Spirit of God the very Light of Nature and Christs Spirit and Spiritual Word doth make them manifest such as Adultery Fornication c. of which I have told you and yet tell you that such shall not inherit the Kingdom of God 22. But the fruit of the Spirit is love joy peace long-suffering gentleness goodness faith 23. Meekness temperance against such there is no law 22 23. But the Fruits of the Spirit of Christ in all true Christians them that are not under the Law of Moses are Love to God and Men Joy in the hope of Salvation and in doing good Peace with Conscience and as much as in us lieth with Men Patience under Sufferings and Wrongs Kindness and Gentleness doing all the good we can Trustiness and trusting God Meekness and tameness of Disposition Temperance and Chastity c. The Spirit of God giveth us a Love to all these so that such need not penal Terrour to force them to it nor doth the Law condemn any of these 24. And they that are Christs have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts 24. And all true Christians whom Christ will own have by his Spirit crucified the Flesh with its inordinate Affections and Lusts in conformity to the crucified Body of their Lord though he had no Sin And this is more effectual against Sin than all the Curses of Moses's Law 25. If we live in the Spirit let us also walk in the Spirit 25. If the Spirit be the Principle of our New Life let us do the Works of it 26. Let us not be desirous of vain glory provoking one another envying one another 26. If you be Spiritual shew it by avoiding vain-glorious Boasting of your own Knowledge and Goodness and provoking others by proud Contempt or contentious Opposition See Jam. 3. CHAP. VI. 1. BRethren if a man be overtaken in a fault ye which are spiritual restore such an one in the spirit of meekness considering thy self lest thou also be tempted 1. If any of you be surprised in Faultiness contrary to the bent of his Heart and Life you that are indeed spiritual and free your selves shew it by that Meekness which is the Fruit of the Spirit in
contrary to Christianity and the Cause of Divisions in the Church And by these the carnal persecuting Seed especially when they invade the Sacred Office are differenced from true Christians as Wolves from Sheep even when as the false Prophets they pretend the Cause and Name of Christ 3. That all this is for want of Christian Love and the Dominion of carnal Self-love and Love to God and to others as our selves must be the proper Cure 3. Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace 3. This Love and forbearance must specially be exercised to preserve the Unity of the Christian Church which all must endeavour faithfully to keep And this Unity inwardly consisteth in being all possess'd and governed by One Holy Spirit as all the Parts of the Body are by one Soul and outwardly by living peaceably towards each other especially in our Church-Communion 4 5 6. There is one body and one Spirit even as ye are called in one hope of your calling one Lord one faith one baptism one God and Father of all who is above all and through all and in you all 4 5 6. More particularly in these seven Respects our Unity doth consist 1. The Church which is as the Body of Christ is one Universal Church 2. The Spirit of God which as it were animateth it is One and the same Spirit 3. The Grace and Heavenly Glory which is the Hope of Believers which they seek and for which they forsake the World is One. 4. The Head Lord and Saviour of the Church is One and the same to all 5. The Essentials of the Christian Faith or Creed are One and the same 6. The Baptismal Vow and Covenant and Profession in which we are devoted to God the Father Son and Holy Ghost and united Sacramentally to Christ his Church is One and the same to all in the Essentials 7. And all have One God and Father in Christ who is 1. Transcendently and absolutely above and over all 2. And unconceivably penetrateth all And 3. and is in his Essence most intimately in you all and is All in all things Note That in these seven things that Unity of the Church consisteth which is Gods prescribed and conferred Qualification for Christian Communion in Love and Peace And that as Satan useth to undo by overdoing and the Pharisees had more Laws Traditions and strictness therein as needful to Communion than Christ had who would have Mercy rather than Sacrifice So it is by adding a multitude of Ensnaring Canons Customs and Opinions as necessary to Communion that he hath corrupted and torn the visible Church and turned Love and Communion into Wrath and Persecution And yet this Vnity must be kept in Peace and therefore both Persecuting and Contumeli●us Turbulent Vnpeaceableness against those that own these Seven Points of Vnion should be avoided by Christians and restrained by Magistrates who must keep the Peace And whenever God in mercy will heal the lacerated Church it will be on these terms 7. But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ 7. But though we have all One Spirit and are One in all the foresaid Essentials of our Religion yet this Unity is found in very great diversity of degrees of Grace and both degrees and kind of G●fts S●e 1 Cor. 12. as it pleaseth Christ to distribute them 8. Wherefore he saith When he ascended up on high he led captivity captive and gave gifts unto men 8. As it is said in Psal 68.18 When c. So when Christ ascended he triumphed over Satan Death and Hell and sent down from Heaven the Gifts of his Spirit 9. Now that he ascended what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth 10. He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens that he might fill all things 9 10. And when it is said that he ascended it implieth that he first descended into this lower World into a low Condition and into the Grave And therefore it is the same Jesus who was here humbled in his Descent who is exalted by his Ascent f●r above all Heavens which Man doth see or know that thence is the Sun by the influence of its Heat and Light and Motion filleth all below acccording to the rec●pti●e Capacity of each so our glorified Lord by h●s administring Influx might fill all with common or special Grace according to their various receptivity 11. And he gave some Apostles and some Prophets and some Evangelists and some Pastors and Teachers 12. For the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry for the edifying of the body of Christ 11 12. And he gave by Qualification and Mission some Apostles sent by his own Mouth to be the most eminent Attesters of his Miracles Doctrine and Resurrection and Founders of the Churches some Prophets by Revelation and Inspiration to confirm the Christian Faith some Evangelists whose Work was as eminently qualified to go abroad to preach the Gospel and gather Churches or confirm them without being fixed to a special Place or Flock and some Pastors and Teachers called also Bishops and Elders who were set over the particular Churches as their Guides and Instructers as being their special Flocks and Charge And all these Gifts and Offices are given for that Ministerial Work which God who worketh by Means will use to bring on all his Saints towards the Perfection of themselves and of the Church and by the Increase Concord and Sanctity of the Members to edifie or build up this Body of Christ 13. Till we all come in the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God unto a perfect man unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ 13. Till by this increase of Number and Holiness and Concord we all Jews and Gentiles make up that Church which in the Vnity of Faith and Knowledge and Acknowledgment of Christ attaineth to that degree of perfection in which consisteth the measure of Grace and fulness of Stature which Christ wi●l bring his Church unto which is that maturity which imitateth our natural growth from Infancie to full Manhood 14. That we henceforth be no more children tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine by the sleight of men and cunning craftiness whereby they lie in wait to deceive 14. That being by Gods blessing by such a Ministry brought up to Manhood we may no longer be like Children who through weakness cannot stand in the Wind but are carried about by it so childish Christians are by every Wind of Plausible Doctrine by the slight subtilty and craft of Men that by pretences of Knowledge Holiness Power or Love lay snares and lie in wait to deceive the weak 15. But speaking the truth in love may grow up into him in all things which is the head even Christ 15. But though we know but in part
yet speaking and keeping the necessary truth or essentials of our Religion in Love and Concord in this Faith and Love may in all things grow up to greater measures by degrees even into a fuller Communion with Christ our Head and likeness to him 16. From whom the whole body fitly joyned together and compacted by that which every joynt supplieth according to the effectual working in the measure of every part maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of it self in love 16. From whom the whole Church receiveth both that vital Influence and that Conduct and Government to its own intensive and extensive increase in Love which is its spiritual Life which the natural Body doth from the Head and Heart by communication of vital and animal Spirits and Heat And this Life and Increase is received and communicated to each part from Christ by that coagmentation and due connexion of all the Members of the Church together while each keepeth his place and performeth his own Office by the exercise of Faith and Love effectually for the good of all Even as the Body is kept in Life and Health while every inferiour Part and Joynt is receptive and active according to its proper Place and Office Note There is no Text which is so plausibly wrested to maintain Popery that is One Universal Humane Government of the whole Church on Earth Monarchical or Aristocratical by Pope Council or combined Metropolitans as one Soveraignty as this It seeming to forestalled Men to speak of the Church as compacted in one Universal Policy so governed And it is a Text which must be greatly studied against Dividers and yet vindicated from Roman Perverters I. Doubtless the Text speaketh strongly for Universal Concord and not onely for an uniting of Members in several Congregations which shall each be Independent which would be but like so many Limbs cut off from the Body but for an uniting of Congregations yea of all through the World in one compacted Body And therefore all Christians must abhor Dissection and Separation or Schism II. Yet it is evident that Paul speaketh of no one Head but Christ and of no sort of Universal Soveraign on Earth as under him And indeed it is an Office that Humane Nature here is not capable of either in Monarchy or Aristocracy It 's impossible for any Church-Soveraign-Power save Divine or Angelical at least to rule the Church by Legislation Judgment and Execution all over the Earth much of it being out of our reach as the Moon is And the Church is under contrary enemy militant Civil Governours which maketh it the more impossible And the onely Pretenders have been the great Dividers and Destroyers What then is here meant and to be done for Unity Not to feign impossible Terms such as are An Vniversal Soveraignty and Multitudes of Hamane Doubtful Vnnecessary Canons which are the most effectual causes of Discord But 1. to take up with Christs own prescribed terms of Union here laid down v. 3 4 5. If Christ have not made the Laws of Church Union he is not the maker of the Church for Unity is essential to it as to a House or Body 2. To be one in Love and to repress all Tyranny that would destroy Love and Peace 3. As in the several Assemblies they must exercise the same Faith and Hope and love and worship the same God and Saviour by the same Spirit so that these Churches must live in love to each other and avoid all Discord And if any breach be made between them in Faith or Love they must use all reasonable means to heal it which is by Writing or Messengers giving to each other an account of their Faith and Practice and when need is consulting in Synods of one or of divers Nations Not that such Synods are Governours of many Churches by a Major Vote or by Metropolitan Power save as they may exercise the Magistrates Power of the Sword by his Commission which were such fit can be given only in his own Dominions out of which Synods and Metropolitans can have no Political Governing Power But the Major Vote must be regarded for Concord which is the use of Synods yet so that it prevail not against Divine Authority and Law nor against Reason or the Churches good And therefore 1. Synods are but for Counsel and Agreement 2. And General Councils impossible and neeedless it being impossible and needless that all the World have notice of the Cases of every particular Church much less that they meet for the redress 3. And when Corruption and Tyranny as under the Arrians and Papists have got the Major Vote the minor are not bound to agree with them but to dissent As the Earth is Gods Kingdom and all Kings are his Officers in their several Kingdoms but neither any one Man or many Conjunct in one Aristocracie or Council are One Soveraign Governing Power over all the Earth but only should by Consultations seek to keep the Common Love and Peace even so all Churches and Christians on Earth are Christs Kingdom or Church Universal and all True Pastors are his Officers in their several Churches but neither one Man or many Conjunct as one Political Person or Aristocracie are one Summa Potestas over all Christians on Earth but those that are within the reach and notice of each other should when it 's needful by Synods and Consultations keep up Unity of Faith and Love and all needful Concord Had not Princes been made too capable of abuse they would not take well the Doctrine of a late Learned and Triumphant Writer who tells us that tho de facto Princes do not yet they ought to unite their Power in one Council which should be the brightest Governour of them all And so 1. all Kings must be Subjects 2. Aristocracy must rule Monarchy 3. How shall all Kings from the Antipodes or over all the Earth meet 4. Who shall call them 5. Where must they meet 6. Shall they trust their Crowns to Deligate Subjects 7. What if the most be Heathens and Mahometans and most Christians Hereticks in each others account 8. If he condescend to limit this Soveraign Diet who shall limit it and how And then the Universal Soveraign is still wanting They that dare plead for no more than Vniversal Communion should have understood that Communion as such belongs but to a Community and a meer Community is no Body Politick or Governed Society but a Confederacie of Equals as to Rule With respect to God only the World is one Governed Kingdom and with respect to Christ the Church in one Ruled Body Politick But neither of them is One as united in any Vicarious Soveraign but in their several Provinces must keep Communion in Faith Love and Peace 17. This I say therefore and testifie in the Lord that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk in the vanity of their mind 17. Therefore I charge you as from Christ that you that are Christians live not
Flesh and not to hate it so must Men do by their Wives as Christ doth by the Church 30. For we are members of his body of his flesh and of his bones 30. And as Eve was said to be to Adam Flesh of his Flesh and Bone of his Bone so by allusion we may say of the Church and Christ in a spiritual sense 31. For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother and shall be joyned unto his wife and they two shall be one flesh 31. And as it was then said A man shall leave c. so must Believers leave all for Christ as Christ laid down his Life for them and they shall be made as one 32. This is a great mystery but I speak concerning Christ and the church 32. This that is said of Adam and Eve and of Marriage did mystically prefigure the Marriage of Jesus Christ and the Church and of this it is that I now speak 33. Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself and the wife see that she reverence her husband 33. But though I have turned my Speech to Christ and the Church I repeat my Counsel Let every Man love his Wife with such an entire constant and forbearing Love as he loveth himself and let the Wife see that she live in loving Subjection and Reverence to her Husband CHAP. VI. 1. CHildren obey your parents in the Lord for this is right 1. Let Children be obedient to their Parents under God in obedience to him for he hath commanded it 2. Honour thy father and mother which is the first commandment with promise 2. Saying Honour thy Father and Mother And though general Promises be intimated in the First and Second Commandment this is the first Commandment that hath annexed the Promise of the Land which God was then leading the Israelites to as it is said 3. That it may be well with thee and thou mayest live long on the earth 3. That thou mayst live long and prosper in the Promised Land of Canaan which intimateth also to us Christian Gentiles a Promise of more Prosperity on Earth than disobedient Children shall have and an earthly Curse to the disobedient Note That accordingly Gods Curse on Earth doth usually follow Children that dishonour and wrong their Parents and rebell against them and usually even Earthly Blessings are given to those that honour and obey Parents under God 4. And ye fathers provoke not your children to wrath but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord. 4. And let Parents remember that Childrens corrupt Nature and Weakness are liable to such Passions as may pervert them and therefore let not your sowr and provoking Government and Carriage tempt them hereto beyond their strength but govern them with Fatherly Love and bring them up to the Knowledge and Obedience of the Lord by wise and diligent Teaching Example Admonition and Discipline 5. Servants be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh with fear and trembling in singleness of your heart as unto Christ 5. And let not Servants think that Christianity freeth them from Service or from Obedience Diligence or Reverence to their Masters though they be Unbelievers but give them all due Obedience and reverent Submission and this in conscience and sincerity as part of your Obedience to Christ who doth command it and will reward you 6. Not with eye-service as men-pleasers but as the servants of Christ doing the will of God from the heart 6. Not deceitfully when your Masters see and know what you do meerly to please Men but as the true Servants of Christ with heartiness and in secret things as well as open doing Service to Men in obedience to the Will of God and to please him 7. With good will doing service as to the Lord and not to men 7. I repeat it because it greatly concerneth you that you do all your Service faithfully and willingly without grudging and that not as a bare Service to Man but as a part of your Service to the Lord himself which he hath prescribed and will accept 8. Knowing that whatsoever good thing any man doth the same shall he receive of the Lord whether he be bond or free 8. Be sure of this That your lowest and hardest Service being your Duty is a good Work and such Works of Fidelity in the lowest Bond-servants are accepted of God as well as the more honoured Service of the Greatest 9. And ye masters do the same things unto them forbearing threatning knowing that your master also is in heaven neither is there respect of persons with him 9. And you that are Masters see that you be as careful of your Part to your Servants as you would have them be of their Duty to you and rule them not tyrannically by insulting and passionate Menaces and Reproaches Knowing that Christ in Heaven is equally the Lord of them and you and will not be partial to you for your Wealth or Superiority but will equally do Justice unto all 10. Finally my brethren be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might 10. To conclude Behave your selves in the discharge of all your Duties and resistance of all the Temptations of your Warfare as resolved valiant Christians strong in the Faith and Love of Christ by his powerful assisting Grace 11. Put on the whole armour of God that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil 11. And with skill and care put on and use the Grace and Helps which God vouchsafeth you which are to a Christian like compleat Armour to a Soldier that you may be able to stand fast against all the Stratagems and Plots of the Devil who seeketh to overthrow you 12. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities against powers against the rulers of the darkness of this world against spiritual wickedness in high places 14. For the great Conflict which Christians are engaged in is not meerly against Men but against Devils who by Gods Ordination and the Success of their Temptations are Principalities and Powers and the Rulers of the Persons and Ways of Darkness Ignorance and Unbelief in the World and are spiritual W●ckedness above us in the Air. 13. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day and having done all to stand 13. Therefore neglect no part of the Armour afforded you by God but use it all that in the time of Temptation you may be able to resist and conquer the Assaults of Men and Devils and when they have done their worst and you have withstood them you may stand fast in Faith and Holiness and Hope 14. Stand therefore having your loyns girt about with truth and having on the breastplate of righteousness 15. And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace 14 15. Stand therefore to your Obligations to Faith and
it is supposed that we are wronged else there is no need of forgiving 2. True Christians are known by this Spiritual Nature as well as by Religious Exercises 14. And above all these things put on charity which is the bond of perfectness 14. But as the most necessary and excellent of all put on true endeared Love to others as your selves for the sake of God who must be most loved For as this is the highest Grace which Christs Spirit worketh in us so it is that Bond which by uniting Believers to Christ and each other tendeth to the perfect compagination growth and welfare of the Church and every Member of it 15. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts to the which also ye are called in one body and be ye thankful 15. And let that Peace which God both giveth you within and calleth you to exercise by dwelling in your Hearts bear rule in your lives towards all Men as being of the same Body And live in continual thankfulness to God 16. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another in Psalms and hymns and spiritual songs singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. 16. Let the word of God so possess your Souls that you may by it have plenteous Holy Wisdom to instruct and admonish one another and Holy Affections that those who have the gift of composing Holy Psalms and Hymns and Spiritual Songs for themselves and others use may do it wisely and all of you use them with Holy Joy in singing to the Lord. 17. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed do all in the name of the Lord Jesus giving thanks to God and the Father by him 17. And let all that you offer to God in word or deed in worship or obedience be done in the name of the Lord Jesus trusting for acceptance to his Mediation and offer your daily Thanksgiving to God the Father by him our High Priest in the Heavens 18 19 20 21 22 23. Wives submit your selves unto your own husbands as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands love your wives and be not bitter against them Children obey your parents in all things for this is well-pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers provoke not your children to anger lest they be discouraged Servants obey in all things your masters according to the flesh not with eye-service as men-pleasers but in singleness of heart fearing God And whatsoever ye do do it heartily as to the Lord and not unto men 24. Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance for ye serve the Lord Christ 18 19 20 21 22 23 24. See all this before Paraphrased Eph. 5 6. 25. But he that doth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done and there is no respect of persons 25. But if Masters or Servants do wrong to the other though they may escape the punishment of Man God who respecteth no Mans Person will judge and punish them CHAP. IV. 1. MAster 's give unto your servants that which is just and equal knowing that ye also have a Master in heaven 1. Let not your power over your Servants embolden you to abuse oppress or wrong them but give them all wages and usage which Justice and Equity require for you have a Master in Heaven who will judge you as you are and do 2. Continue in prayer and watch in the same with thanksgiving 2. Be constant in Prayer and not cursory or cold and watch in it against your corruptions and temptations joyning thanksgiving with your requests 3. Withal praying also for us that God would open unto us a door of utterance to speak the mystery of Christ for which I am also in bonds 3. Praying for us Ministers of Christ that God would give us freedom from Mens restraints and our own infirmities that we may with enlargedness and boldness preach the Gospel for which I suffer 4. That I may make it manifest as I ought to speak 4. That I may open and apply it as the Work and the Souls of Men require 5. Walk in wisdom toward them that are without redeeming the time 5. Use the wisdom toward them that are without the Church which is needful to keep you from receiving hurt by them or in doing good to them 6. Let your speech be alway with grace seasoned with salt that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man 6. Let all your speech be the exercise of God's Grace in your Hearts not rotten filthy or vain but wise and savoury that you may speak pertinently and fruitfully to every Man especially in the necessary defence of the truth against Gainsayers and resolving of the doubtful 7. All my state shall Tychichus declare unto you who is a beloved brother and a faithful minister and fellow-servant in the Lord 7. T●chicus a faithful Brother fully shall acquaint you with my Concernments 8 9. Whom I have sent unto you for the same purpose that he might know your estate and comfort your hearts With Onesimus a faithful and beloved brother who is one of you They shall make known unto you all things which are done here 10. Aristarchus my fellow-prisoner saluteth you and Marcus sisters son to Barnabas touching whom ye received commandments if he come unto you receive him 11. And Jesus which is called Justus who are of the circumcision These onely are my fellow-workers unto the kingdom of God which have been a comfort unto me 8 9 10 11. These are all that have helpt me here at Rome in my suffering and have much comforted me 12. Epaphras who is one of you a servant of Christ saluteth you always labouring fervently for you in prayers that ye may stand perfect and compleat in all the will of God 13. For I bear him record that he hath a great zeal for you and them that are in Laodicea and them in Hierapolis 12 13. Note 1. That Prayer should be a Work of fervent labouring 2. That Ministers-should long for the Peoples increase in Grace and universal Obedience more than to promote their own Interest with them 14 15. Luke the beloved Physician and Demas greet you Salute the brethren which are in ●aodicea and Nymphas and the church which is in his house 〈…〉 15. Which use to meet there And when this epistle is read amongst you cause that it be read also in the church of the Laodiceans and that ye likewise read the epistle from Laodicea 16. Note 1. It was the Duty of the Churches to communicate the Epistles written to them by the Apostles 2. What Epistle that written to Laodicea was it concerneth us not to know It 's vain to think that Paul and other Apostles wrote no more Epistles than be in the Bible or that God is bound to bring down all that they wrote to us 17. And say to Archippus Take heed to the ministery which thou hast received in the Lord that thou
might redeem us from all iniquity and purifie unto himself a peculiar people zealous of good works 14. Who gave himself as our Saviour a Sacrifice for our sins and a Ransom for our deliverance that thereby he might redeem and save us from the guilt punishment and power of all our sins and purifie and sanctifie a Church to himself as his Body and Spouse for his Glory and delightful Communion with them a peculiar people segregate from the polluted wicked world and by his Spirit made zealously devoted in Love and Diligence to all good works of Holiness to God and Justice and Beneficence to Man Note 1. It was to Redeem us from our own sin and its effects that Christ gave himself as our Saviour to be a Sacrifice for us 2. The Redeemed of Christ not only as to sufficiency but efficacy differ not from the polluted world only by name and profession and common things but are a purified and peculiar people possessed by Christ's Spirit with a Zeal for good works 3. True Zeal is for Good works and not for dead Ceremony or worldly Interest or odd Opinions and dividing Sects It is not furious and hurtful and envious but first pure and then peaceable and sets men upon earnest endeavour to do good 4. It is not only for us that Christ Redeemeth and Purifieth a Church and chosen People but ultimately for himself and for his own and his Fathers Glory and Complacence As he made the world not as needing it but as pleased in his own expressed Glory 15. These things speak and exhort and rebuke with all authority Let no man despise thee 15. These necessary practical saving Truths must be the matter of thy Preaching And according to the Authority of thy Office rebuke gainsayers and the disobedient And let thy Doctrine and Behaviour in wisdom and gravity keep thee from all mens contempt CHAP. III. 1. PUT them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers to obey magistrates to be ready to every good work 1. Teach them oft to live in due subjection to Chief Rulers or Princes and those that have Governing-Authority and to obey Magistrates in all things which belong to their Office and Authority to command under God and to do all the good they can to all men 2. To speak evil of no man to be no brawlers but gentle shewing all meekness unto all men 2. To avoid all reproachful and evil speaking of any men without a necessary cause upon sufficient evidence to be no contentious strivers but apt to take all things in the most favourable sense using all meekness to all men 3. For we our selves also were sometimes foolish disobedient deceived serving divers lusts and pleasures living in malice and envy hateful and hating one another 3. In our dealing with others we must use compassion remembring that before our Conversion to Christ we our selves had those Vices which are reproachful in others we were witless unpersuadable and disobedient deceived in the greatest things the servants of divers lusts and pleasures living in malice and envy against others odious our selves and with hatred pursuing one another This was the Gentill life 4. But after that the Kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared 5. Not by works of righteousness which we have done but according to his mercy he saved us by the washing of regeneration and renewing of the holy Ghost 6. Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour 4 5 6. But when the Saving-kindness and Love of God our Saviour to Fallen Man appeared to us by the Communication and Illumination of his Grace not for any good works or deserts of ours for we were as bad as aforesaid but of his meer free Mercy he saved us from that state of sin and misery by Regeneration signified and sealed in Baptism and by the renewing work of the Holy Ghost which he poured out upon us in the extraordinary measure promised after Christs Resurrection both for Sanctification and confirming Miracles 7. That being justified by his grace we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life 7. That thus by his Grace being of wicked Enemies made acceptably righteous by pardon of sin and renovation by the Merit and Spirit of Christ we should be adopted Sons and Heirs of Eternal Life according to his Promise on which we safely build our hope 8. This is a faithful saying and these things I will that thou affirm constantly that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works these things are good and profitable unto men 8. This is a point of great importance which I require thee oft to press upon them that they which are Christians think not that they have nothing to do but to mind Heaven and pray and worship God but that they live in such Callings or Trades in the world in which labouring diligently they may be profitable to others and the publick good and not make Religion a Cloak for Idleness but spend their time in that which is good and profitable to men 9. But avoid foolish questions and genealogies contentions and strivings about the law for they are unprofitable and vain 9. Note That though some of these things were pretended to be Learned Speculations and others to be parts of God's own Word yet to be employed in controversial strivings and disputings or study or talk about such little things to the diverting of us from the study discourse and exercise of practical godliness is fruitless vanity 10. A man that is an heretick after the first and second admonition reject 11. Knowing that he that is such is subverted and sinneth being condemned of himself 10 11. The overvaluing of such conceits and trifling disputes and thinking themselves rare wise men for these and gathering Parties to themselves from the Church to propagate them in Separation and to draw Disciples after them is the way of Hereticks Whoever is such a one supposing private men do their part do thou that art a publick Minister duly admonish him by meekness and convincing evidence of Truth once and again and if he hear not reject him from the Communion of the Flock For such a man is fixed in his sin by pride self-conceit and a depraved Judgment and being subverted into a sinful Separation is self-condemned both by the open profession of his sin as if it were some glorious Truth and Duty and by casting himself out of the Communion of the Church so that he needeth neither Witness nor Judge to cast him 12 13. When I shall send Artemas unto thee or Tychicus be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis for I have determined there to winter Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently that nothing be wanting unto them 12 13. Note God's Ministers must further all o●hers in his work as well as work themselves 14. and let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses that
man on Earth who must all once die and then be doomed to their endless state so Christ was once to die as a Sacrifice for the sins many and to them that wait for him in the prepared state of Faith Hope Obedience and Patience he shall appear again but not any more to bear the punishment of their sins but to justifie them publickly and take them to his glory CHAP. X. 1. FOR the law having a shadow of good things to come and not the very Image of the things can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the commers thereunto perfect 1. For the Law having but in its Ceremonies a shadow of the great heavenly Blessings of the Gospel and not the clear Image or Draught or Map of the things themselves doth shew by the frequent yearly iteration of those Sacrifices that it doth not perfect the Sacrifices 2. For then would they not have ceased to be offered because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins 2. For then they would have ceased to be offered because the Worshippers once pardoned and cleansed should have no more conscience of guilt or remaining pravity 3. But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year 4. For it is not possible that the bloud of bulls and of goats should take away sins 3 4. Note 1. This Text doth not deny that the faithful Jews were then forgiven nor that the Law conduced to it as used in subordination to the antecedent Promise and Law of Grace But without this Promise the Law could not do it 2. Nor doth this infer that we may not mention lament and beg pardon for our old sin while we live on Earth Nor that renewed sins have no need of a renewed pardon but no need of a new Sacrifice 5. Wherefore when he cometh into the world he saith Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not but a body hast thou prepared me 6. In burnt-offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure 7. Then said I Lo I come in the volume of the book it is written of me to do thy will O God 8. Above when he said Sacrifice and offering and burnt-offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not neither hadst pleasure therein which are offered by the law 9. Then said he Lo I come to do thy will O God He taketh away the first that he may establish the second 5 6 7 8 9. David as a Prophet personating Christ saith c. taking down Sacrifices as insufficient and introducing Christs obedient Sacrifice of himself 10. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all 10. And by this Decree of God giving us a Saviour to be a Sacrifice for our sins we are as far as belongeth to the Expiating Sacrifice made a holy people unto God the sins of the faithful by this price being pardoned and Reconciliation made 11. And every priest standeth daily ministring and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices which can never take away sins 11. And the Priests must be still sacrificing the same things never finishing the Expiation 12. But this man after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever sat down on the right hand of God 13. From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool 12 13. But Christ having offered but one Sacrifice for sins as sufficient for ever sate down in the possession of Glory and universal Dominion in the Heavens on the right hand of God where he will reign till he hath subdued all his Enemies even all that opposeth the perfecting of his work of the Salvation and Glory of his Church 14. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified 14. For all the faithful and sanctified are by that one offering as a sufficient Expiatory Sacrifice freed from all guilt and sin now initially and shall be perfectly without any other Expiatory Sacrifice for ever 15 16 17. Whereof the holy Ghost also is a witness to us for after that he had said before This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days saith the Lord I will put my laws into their hearts and in their minds will I write them And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more 18. Now where remission of these is there is no more offering for sin 15 16 17 18. Note here 1. That when the price is given and taken and a free Act of Oblivion made on the bare condition of thankful acceptance the crime is said to be pardoned in the common custom of speech it being done as far as belongeth to the Satisfier and the Rector as such though yet the Resusers be all actually unpardoned For a Conditional Gift puts nothing in act till the Condition be performed 2. That here in the Promise Pardon is not in time before Renovation and so not actually of any Infidels or unconverted though elect thereto 3. That even the pardon of the sanctified is but such as excludeth any more Sacrifice but not any more Faith Repentance Watching Praying c. 19. Having therefore Brethren boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus 20. By a new and living way which he hath consecrated for us through the vail that is to say his flesh 21. And having an high priest over the house of God 19 20 21. And now I come to the Use of all that I have said in all the foregoing Doctrine We are not now deterred from access to God by unexpiated guilt but may come to him as a Father with comfortable reverent boldness and hope as reconciled by Christ even in confidence of the merit of his Righteousness and Sacrifice which is as a new and still effectual living way through the veil of his flesh consecrated for us And we have now in the Heavens a Glorified High Priest who is Head over all things to his Church which is the House of God and ever liveth to do all for us in Heaven which belongeth to a perfected High Priest 22. Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water 22. Let us therefore draw near to God in holy Worship and heavenly Desires and Aspirings with a heart that is sound sincere and true to Christ and our convictions and abounding with full belief and trust in Christ for all that he hath promised having our hearts cleansed by Christ's Blood which the sprinkling figured under the Law from the conscience of guilt and the love and power of sin and our bodily practice purified from uncleanness typified by the washings under the Law and federally signified by our Baptism 23. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering for he is faithful that promised 23. Let us against all subtle deceitful Adversaries and against all
Forms or Humane Canons it will be no cover for the sin 4. It is the Faith first delivered to the Churches by the Apostles that corrupters deprave and we must contend for and must be the Test of our several differences 5. Keep Faith and Religion sound among its Professors and it will overcome the World 4. For there are certain men crept in unawares who were before of old ordained to this condemnation ungodly men turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness and denying the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ 4. For there are crept in by little and little as in the dark some men that Christ had before told us should ●rise or God decreed to condemn for their sin ungodly men that though they did seem Christians have turned the Doctrine of God's Grace in Christ into a Doctrine and Practice of Lasciviousness and Licentiousness and denying Je●us Christ who is the only Lord God and our Lord or the only God and our Saviour c. Note 1. One of Satan's chief ways against the Church and Religion is to corrupt it by Heresies 2. Corrupters creep secretly into the Church at unawares and do not openly bring in all at once 3. Though God ordain or decree no man's sin he both decreeth and foretelleth their condemnation for sin 4. It is ungodly m●n that are usually the great corrupters of the Church and Doctrine 5. Libertinism looseness and sensuality are the usual dangerous ways of such corruptions as being the way most suitable to man's corrupt Nature and which will have most followers 5. I will therefore put you in remembrance though ye once knew this how that the Lord having saved the people out of the land of Egypt afterwards destroyed them that believed not 5. As the Israelites perished in the Wilderness for Unbelief after all their miraculous deliverances from Egypt so shall revolters perish notwithstanding their Baptism and fair beginnings 6. And the angels which kept not their first estate but left their own habitation he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day 6. And the Angels that stood not in their integrity but fell by sin God hath shut up as it were Prisoners in Chains though they go about all the Earth with temptations in certain expectations of fuller condemnation at the great day of Judgment 7. Even as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities about them in like manner giving themselves over to fornication and going after strange flesh are set forth for an example suffering the vengeance of eternal fire 7. As Sodom c. were by fire from Heaven utterly destroyed by God's revenging Judgment 8. Likewise also these filthy dreamers defile the flesh despise dominion and speak evil of dignities 8. So these Hereticks dreaming of high Wisdom are turned to fleshly lusts and to despise Government and speak contemptuously or reproachfully of Superiors as if Christ hath freed men from Humane Rule and made all equal and all things lawful when yet they deny even Christ himself in some Essentials of his Person or Office 9. Yet Michael the archangel when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses durst not bring against him a railing accusation but said the Lord rebuke thee 9. Yet Michael the chief Angel contending with a Principal Devil about the rebuilding of the Jewish Temple Zech. 3. durst not bring railing accusation but appealed to God Note 1. There are differences and superiorities among the Angels and Devils It seems by Dan. 10.13 21. that Angels have their several earthly Provinces in charge and that Michael was Prince of the Jews 2. The badness and vanity of Malignants will not justifie railing accusation against them when it may not be used against Devils yet their evil must be detected that it may be frustrated 3. By the Body of Moses some understand his buried Body which Satan would have idolized and others his Body in the Basket which Satan would have had drowned But by Zech. 3. it is more like to be the Temple Law and Jewish Policy called the Body of Moses as the Church is called the Body of Christ 10. But these speak evil of those things which they know not but what they know naturally as brute beasts in those things they corrupt themselves 10. But these pretending to know what they do not speak evil of the things which they know not being proud and ignorant of their ignorance but what natural sense or reasonableness constraineth them to know their lust prevaileth against it and they live in debauchery as if they knew it not to be evil Note It 's the common mark of erroneous men to be confident where they mistake and to censure and speak evil fiercely of that which they never understood and to sin against that knowledge which they have or easily might have 11. Wo unto them for they have gone in the way of Cain and ran greedily after the errour of Balaam for reward and perished in the gain-saying of Core 11. Woe to them for they have imitated Cain in offering God a faithless Sacrifice and envying and persecuting them that do better And they are covetous worldlings that like Balaam would do evil for reward or gain And they have imitated Core in opposing Moses and Aaron Magistrates and Apostles and shall perish as they did 12. These are spots in your feasts of charity when they feast with you feeding themselves without fear clouds they are without water carried about of winds trees whose fruit withereth without fruit twice dead plucked up by the roots 12. These are the disgrace of your Love-feasts and Communion which they turn into a Sensual Feast not fearing prophanation of excess Hypocrites like empty Clouds that water not the Earth but carried about with the winds of worldly Interest or Seduction like fruitless Trees twice dead and rooted up by Apostasie from their first profession Note It is a wonder that the Apostle no more reproveth them for admitting such to their Communion as it seemeth by these words they did 13. Raging waves of the sea foming out their own shame wandring stars to whom is reserved the blackness of darkness for ever 13. Unquiet fierce and raging persons who while they pour out ill words of others do but foam out their own shame Teachers they will needs be as Stars to the Churches but they are but Erratick Stars or Comets that shall end in endless darkness to themselves while they boast of Light to others 14. And Enoch also the seventh from Adam prophesied of these saying Behold the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints 15. To execute judgment upon all and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him 14 15. Note 1. It 's like this Prophecy of Henoch was received by Tradition 2. This description sure is not of the
built for Jupiter and so continued three years and a half as Antiocbus prophaned it Dan. 7.25 Say others The outer Court and the City left to the Gentiles is that great part of the visible Church left under the Papacy to such gross Idolatry as that it hath but the name of Christian as ●loathing restored Gentil●sme and is rejected of God Some take the 42 months literally for a certain time of three years and a half and some for uncertain time Christ was three years and a half in his ministeriall labour And this number is five times here recited Therefore like to be strictly meant Some old Fathers and some Papists understand it strictly of the reign of an Antichrist which they think is yet to come some of the time of the Papal reign which they say will be 1260 years beginning between 365. and 455. and ending between 1625 and 1715 in which space Babylon will fall Others state the time differently 3. And I will give power unto my two witnesses and they shall prophesie a thousand two hundred and threescore days clothed in sackcloth 3. Note There is great diversity of opinions who these witnesses are And yet most Protestants think that their time is past or the most of it and this prophecy fullfilled And Prophecies use to be plain when they are fulfilled Some new men say that they were the two Churches in Jerusalem of the Jewish and the Greek Language and their two Bishops who preached all that time against the sins of Jews and Gentiles For they think that the Jews and Greeks not understanding the same Language had in Jerusalem Antioch Rome Alexandria and other great Cities two Churches and Bishops Others that the two witnesses are Enoch and Elias that shall come when Antichrist cometh Others that they are the Old and New Testament which the Papacy shall oppose or as others the Preachers of the Old and New Testament named two because but sew but yet enough to promote the Reformation Brightman saith It is the Scriptures and the Assemblies of the Faithful Others that it is the Godly Magistracy and Ministry which the Papacy will cast down Others that God will hereafter send two with the Spirit of Enoch and Elias in whom all this shall be literally fulfilled Others that it is the Martyrs that have in several times opposed Popery to the death Called two in allusion to many old couples of Witnesses Moses and Aaron Caltb and Joshua Ezra and Nehemiah Haggai and Zachary Zerubbabel and Joshua to which Zech. 4.11 this Text specially relateth Moses and Elias on the Mount c. Clothed in Sackcloth is doing their Office in a time of great affliction And all this some think may be applied to divers couples that God hath used in divers times and parts of his Church As to the Waldenses and Albigenses to John Hus and Jerome of Prague to John Frederick Duke of Saxony and Philip Landgrave of Hassia long imprisoned by Charles the fifth and after delivered to the Lutherans and the reformed to King Edward 6. and his Uncle Protector Duke of Somerset c. Even as Christ sent out his Disciples by two and two Paul and Barnabas c. Lira's conceit that Silverius and Mennas were the two witnesses against the Eutychians is vain 4. These are the two olive-trees and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth 4. These are resembled to the two mentioned Zech. 4. These are as Olive Branches that empty themselves into the Lamps even the Servants of the Lord of the World for his Church 5. And if any man will hurt them fire proceedeth out of their mouth and devoureth their enemies and if any man will hurt them he must in this manner be killed 5. If any will persecute or silence them God will revenge their cause it refers to Elias that brought down fire from Heaven to destroy the Captains and their fifties 2. Kings 1.10 and to Moses Num. 16. Or say others The word in their mouths shall be as fire against all false Doctrines and Corruptions 6. These have power to shut heaven that it rain not in the days of their prophecy and have power over waters to turn them to blood and to smite the earth with all plagues as often as they will 6. And the Power that God gave their Ministry and reforming endeavours and the revenge that God will use against their persecutors were expressed to me as resembling Elias whose prayer stopt the rain for three years and a half and the plagues which God by Moses inflicted on Egypt Christ intimating this Matth. 17. When Moses the chief Law-giver and Elias the chief Prophet were the two great witnesses of his Glory And it is notable that Godly Magistrates and Godly Ministers have usually prospered together and fallen together and Magistracy and Ministry been together corrupted 7. And when they shall have finished their testimony the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them and shall overcome them and kill them 8. And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great City which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt where also our Lord was crucified 7 8. Note Christs witnesses Holy Magistrates and Ministers shall be marvellously preserved till they have finished their Testimony and they have done their work And then they may be destroyed by the Servants of the Devil and exposed to common scorn and perhaps be denyed buryall in the places where they preach't and were wonderfully blest and their enemies punished And this will seem to carnal men to be Gods disowning them and all that they did But the same sort of Men shall be raised again revive their work with more success and again silence the deluded insulting enemies These words where our Lord was crucified seem to favour their Exposition who apply all this to Jerusalem But most Protestants take it for the Roman state of Papal corruption And some by their carcasses say is meant the dead carcass of the Scripture or Religion or Assemblies which only is left among them But it seemeth to me to mean persons And whether the same thing as this killing and reviving the witnesses may not be done at Jerusalem and elsewhere again and again in several ages the Church having had its daies and night I yet know not 9. And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves 9. Say some They shall literally be cast out inhumanely unburyed say others They shall be politically slain deposed silenced imprisoned and cast by as dead and useless And not only their persecuting enemies but the deluded rabble and people shall see their oppression and insult over them and not suffer them to be restored or honoured 10. And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them and make merry and shall send gifts one to
before by the Profession of Christianity they could not have been Adulterers To which the former say 1. That Fornication may be the sin of the unmarried 2. That by Fornication is meant Idolatry and God's right may serve to infer this guilt though men be not married to him by consent And that it is incredible that all the Heathen World are no Idolaters because they were not profest Christians By the Whore is meant the same as the Woman the second two horned Beast and the false Prophet say many that is the Church of Rome with the whole body of the Roman Clergy which others deny 3. So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet-coloured beast full of names of blasphemy having seven heads and ten horns 3. Into the Wilderness say some to represent the desolation say others because it was a Revelation not to be yet openly known in the City for if the Rulers had known of all these terrible Predictions against them they would have raged by Persecution against Christians and therefore all this Prophecy was to be obscure and not communicated long so commonly as other Scriptures Others say it was to shew that Antichrist's Kingdom is barren without a drop of grace Others that solitude is fittest for contemplation Others that the Wilderness is Heathenism brought in by Popery Others that as the true Church was driven into a Wilderness of solitude and suffering so now shall Papists be Others that the Papacy is a Wilderness as an Apostatical Church succeeding the Apostolick Church Who is the great Whore whether Rome Pagan Rome Papal or Rome hereafter fallen to a future Antichrist I ouce for all refer the Reader to my Postscript 4. And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour and decked with gold and precious stone and pearls having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication 4. Idolatrous Rome was represented to me as a Woman richly and splendidly arrayed by her wealth and pomp and power enticing the World to her Idolatry 5. And upon her forehead was a name written MYSTERIE BABYLON THE GREAT THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH 5. The name written was Mystery Babylon c. that is Mystical not literal Babylon the Great City Rome the Mother of Idolatry and Wickedness propagating them by her Power and Learning to all the Nations of her Dominions and further in the World As Babylon was the Idolatrous cruel Captivator of the Ancient Jews overthrowing their Kingdom so was Idolatrous proud Rome the Captivator and Persecutor of Jew and Gentile Christians and the great Enemy of the Church 6. And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus and when I saw her I wondered with great admiration 6. Idolatry was not her only crime but the guilt of being as drunken with holy blood Both her pomp and her bloodiness seemed wonderfull 7. And the angel said unto me Wherefore didst thou marvel I will tell thee the mystery of the woman and of the beast that carrieth her which hath the seven heads and ten horns 7. Note Seeing God professeth to open the mystery who this Mother of Harlots is it is safest to add as little on pretense of fuller exposition as we can 8. The beast that thou sawest was and is not and shall ascend out of the bottomless pit and go into perdition and they that dwell on the earth shall wonder whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world when they behold the beast that was and is not and yet is 8. Some take this as fitted to the time when the Empire should first be Christian as if it meant Rome was the beast when it was Pagan but now is not when it is Christian but will be again when it was Papal and Antichristian Or Rome is the Idolatrous beast under the Pagan but is not now under that form but yet is under the Papal form Many other expositions I pass by They that expound all of Pagan Rome say that the sense is I shall notifie the beast which is the Roman Emperor by that one who now reigneth which is Domitian He was in the Government when his Father Vespasian was abroad And he after ceased while his Father and Brother Titus reigned and then reasumed it raised by Satan to persecute the Church and then is basely kill'd himself Rather q. d. I am now shewing thee the fall and destruction of the beast and whore and will now notifie him to thee accordingly The beast or Emperor at this fall will be the bloodyest of all persecutor Dioclesian Of whom then it may be said He was Emperour But discouraged by the ill success of his persecution he with Maxim He●cillius laid down the Empire and both betook themselves to a private life But after the Devil would sain have restored them and they attempted to rise out of their privacy but did it to their own destruction being both kill'd when Constantine prevailed as were Licinius and Maxenti●s who would have done their work So that when Constantine was destroying the Pagan Empire it was true that Dioclesian and Maxim H●●cul was Emperour and now is not and yet is that is in being though not in power but will rise to his perdition And the Idolaters shall be struck with wonder and con●●rna●ion when they see so cruel and great a Tyrant so brought to nought 9. And here is the mind which hath wisdom The seven heads are seven mountains on which the woman sitteth 10. And there are seven Kings five are fallen and one is and the other is not yet come and when he cometh he must continue a short space 11. And the beast that was and is not even he is the eighth and is of the seven and goeth into perdition 9 10 11. That the seven mountains are those of Rome is very plain But who were the seven Kings I confess I know not Here is work for a searching head the mind that hath wisdom But it is matter of fact which when the thing was newly done the mind that hath wisdom might know But how can we know it but by history without a new Revelation And history herein is lame and much uncertain and the work of man and all men are lyars few Christians were writers till three hundred years after Christ the first Christians had many fabulous reporters among them as their spurious writings shew When John wrote this book and whether all at once or at many years distance of the parts is unknown whatever confident men may talk Eusebius trusteth divers fabulous authors and reports for want of better though he be credible himself I take the style and words of the Book to be the best History of the time which intimateth that part of it at least was written before the siege of Jerusalem

And as for the notice of the state of the Church after the extirpation of the Pagan Empire and Idolatry it was shewed me under the appearance of an Angel coming from Heaven with power to restrain the Devil and he laid hold on him and imprisoned and surely shut him up as in a bottomless Pit that he might deceive the Nations now turned to Christ no more for a thousand years or a long time But then he will be permitted a little while to deceive many Churches Note Satan ever since to this day hath kept about four parts of six of the World in Heathenism so that it must be the World then under the Roman Empire that he is bound from deceiving Whether a thousand years be tak●n strictly or fo● a long time is uncertain Some take it to be a promise of his 1000 years restraint after the Fall of the Pagan Empire and many for 1000 years after the Fall of the Papacy The former think it is all past the last mostly think it is all yet to come but some that it began 1560. It is not a promise that Satan shall not in that thousand years corrupt the Christian Church with any great sin but that he shall not seduce them from Christianity till after a thousand years Just at or about that space of time Mahometanism which began farther off about 606 did invade the Eastern Churches and overcome the Christian Powers and set up a false Prophet an Enemy to Christ and bring Christianity into captivity and scorn 4. And I saw thrones and they sat upon them and judgment was given unto them and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the Witness of Jesus and for the word of God and which had not worshipped the beast neither his image neither had received his mark upon their foreheads or in their hands and they lived and reigned with Chirist a thousand years 4. And the happy following state of the Church was further represented to me by the appearance of Thrones where men sate in Judgment shewing the dominion of Christians over their Enemies And I thought I saw the Souls of the Martyrs whom the Pagans murdered and not only of them but of all sound Christians who had abstained from all participation in the Pagan Idolatry and they lived and reigned as superior to their Enemies with Christ the King of the Church a thousand years Note Here is no talk of the Bodies Resurrection but the Souls living and reigning with Christ And it seemeth to mean that as the Souls of the Faithful live and reign with Christ in Heaven for duration so the Successors of such shall partake on Earth of such a Reign as Christ will exercise in his Church And if yet many corruptions and troubles consist in this imperfect state with Christ's own Reign in the Soul and in the Church why may it not consist with this promised Reign of Saints in the Empire over Pagans As Christ's Reign here is more or less prevalent against publick sin so shall their participation with him be Both heavenly and Earthly Reign seem here spoken of the first as in reality though in the Vision but to shew the other 5. But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished This is the first resurrection 6. Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection on such the second death hath no power but they shall be priests of God and of Christ and shall reign with him a thousand years 5 6. The rest of the dead even the subdued Pagans or Papists say others were kept as in a state of death out of power till the Dragon revived their power again a thousand years after Happy are the holy Christians who shall be partakers in the priviledges blessings and comforts of this delivered and advanced Church they shall no more fall under the Pagan Power or Papal say others not partake with them of that utter destruction which is as a second death Even as holy Souls with Christ in Heaven have these the state of a first Resurrection before the Body rise and are secured from the condemnation of the wicked 7. And when the thousand years are expired Satan shall be loosed out of his prison 8. And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth Gog and Magog to gather them together to battel the number of whom is as the sand of the sea 7 8. There are several Expositions of this some say that by the Thousand years is meant precisely that time which fell out either from Constantine's Edict 611. till the Turks subdued Greece or from Alaricus's sacking Rome till the Turks took Constantinople And that the Fall of the Eastern Churches under the Infidel Power was the letting loose of Satan Others say that a thousand years signifieth only a long undeterminate time and that it was the Churches prosperity till the Papacy corrupted all and tyrannized Others say it was a thousand years before Antichrist should come Others that it will be a thousand years after the Fall of the Papacy in which Religion shall flourish under holy Princes and Pastors Others that after the Fall of the Papal Antichrist Christ will visibly return and se●t up a holy Kingdom whose chief Seat shall be at Jerusalem Some say that it will be a Resurrection of Bodies some only Political Some say that the Thousand years began at Christ's Birth or at the Apostles Preaching Others at the destruction of Jerusalem and ended about Hildebrand's time Some as before said at Constantine's Empire and ended at Boniface the 8 that killed the Albigenses c. Others that it began at 1560. He that knoweth which of these is the right let him tell it for I do not By Gog and Magog many understand the Turks others all sorts of Christ's Enemies Whoever they be a War they will attempt against the Church and will be overthrown 9. And they went up on the breadth of the earth and compassed the camp of the saints about and the beloved city and fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them 9. This Text seemeth the hardest of all the rest Those that say the holy City is Constantinople some of them are put to say that Gog and Magog's destruction as by fire is yet to come But the Text seemeth to speak of it as done before they could take the City Others say it was Tamerlane an Infidel and therefore sent from God against his own inclination that raised Bajazet's Siege and carried him about in a Cage of Iron in scorn till he wilfully dasht out his own brains and so Andronicus was delivered Others refer it to Baldwin's and other Christians taking Constantinople against the Turkish Power But because the Turks after took it these seem not to agree with the Text. Others think it is a War yet to come say some at Jerusalem which shall by
I fear perplexing the Readers and must not be so large I mention what I have done to tell you why I understand not the Revelations and cannot help it that I am no wiser than excellent Calvin nor than a● the Ancient Fathers though I disown their conceit of a future Antichrist at the end of the World I doubt not but many in blind zeal will call this my confessed Ignorance a warping towards Popery though I have long in my Writings against Popery confest the very same This I must bear from them that bear more from themselves and from whom the Church beareth more It 's a small thing for one man to be censured by those persons that censure hardlier almost all the Church of Christ on Earth But when I try whether they know any more than I I find little more than a believing that to be the sense of the Revelation which those good men say it is whom they most value Some will desire yet to know more of my own Opinion And I will freely tell it them I. I am much perswaded by impartial consideration of the Text that the Roman Imperial Power as the upholder of Heathen Worship of Devils Idols and themselves and a Captivaters of the Church of Jews and Gentiles was the first Beast and that Rome in that respect was Babylon and the Whore that made all Nations drunk with her pompous Idolatry And the whole current of the Book seemeth plainly to drive at this But many of the subordinate particulars I understand not II. Whether the Papacy be another Beast or Whore there meant and the Text mean two first Beast● and two Whores or the similitude notwithstanding so many diss●militudes and six hundred or seven hundred or a thousand years interruption make these two one or whether it be Antichrist that is the Beast I will neither affirm nor deny but see no evidence to prove the Affirmative III. What my Judgment is of Popery the Reader may fully see 1. In one Sheet enumerating its Errours 2. In a Book called The Safe Religion 3 In another called A Key for Catholicks 4. In two of the true Catholick Church against Johnson altas Terrel 5. In one called The Christian Religion certain without Popery 6. In one called Full and easie Satisfaction whi●h is the True Religion 7. One called Naked Popery I● these satisfie not the Censurers Zeal him that is ignorant be ignorant and he that is wrathful be so still IV. I do judge of Popery by the knowledge of its particular Errours and Sins and not by the Revelations or any thing which I understand not If the Pope be the great Antichrist which I neither deny nor affirm because I know not as I have long ago confessed I think that it is formally as he is by claim the Vice-Christ Vicarius Christi and claimeth an Universal Soveraignty Ecclesiastical over the whole Church on Earth and not over a Nation only and that he began with that claim to which his many corruptions are joyned to make up a body of iniquity Were there no more to be said against that Church than 1. This claim of Universal Government 2. And the cherishing of Ignorance by forbidding the reading of the Scripture in a known Tongue without Licence and Latine Prayers and Service and an Ignorant Clergy 3. And the Inhumane Doctrine of Transubstantiation 4. And the vile corruptions of much of God's Worship 5. And their horrid Blood-guiltiness by which they do uphold their Kingdom called a Church I take those Popes and Papists who own all this to be liable before God to greater punishment than the Beast and false Prophet mentioned in the Revelations it being far worse to sin thus under the name of Christians and Christ's Vicar and holy Bishops than as Infidels and Heathens to whom as to Sodom it shall be easier in the day of Judgment than for these V. Therefore I judge that a Confederacy or Coalition with the Church of Rome in any of these sins or in the very form of a Church headed by a pretended Universal Head or Soveraign is to be abhorred by all sound Christians And I am glad that this Kingdom is sworn against all Foreign Jurisdiction Civil or Ecclesiastical though Union and Concord with all Foreign Churches must be as far kept as we are able not partaking of their sins But I have long ag● in my Key for Catholicks proposed the desirable terms not for a Coalition but for neighbourly Peace that we may live in love and quietness and not as those that still take themselves bound to destroy each other VI. On these grounds I judge of Persons according to their Personal Guilt and not by the general name of Papists I abhor those that are wicked and that own the foresaid wickedness but not all that are called Roman Catholicks that live in the fear of God and in Charity I will try uncertainties by certainties and not deny Fundamentals in opposition to mens By-Opinions I am certain that I must love a Christian as such and that as much as in me lieth I must live peaceably with all men and avoid all unnecessary Division Wrath and Hatred and I am sure that Blessed are the Peace-makers for whatever Errour calleth them they shall be called the Children of God I am sure that I must unnecessarily speak evil of no man and that slandering and false-accusing are diabolical works and that ●he Wisdom is from beneath which causeth Envy and Strife and in a word that LOVE is Christ's Work and Character and Hatred the Devils But I am not sure that the Church of Rome hath these 1000 or 1300 years been the Whore and Babylon meant in these Texts nor that yet all Papists shall be tormented as worshiping the Beast or his Image c. I am sure that the Visible Church will have scandals and ambitious men and yet that its deliverance in Constantine's time and the following Ages was a wondrous mercy which Heaven and Earth did rejoyce in and praise God ●or And it was a great part of Christ's coming to Reign by Christian Princes and that the Kingdoms of the World were made the Kingdoms of Christ Therefore I dread the denying Christ these Kingdoms and reproaching even the best Ages of his Church on Earth as Antichristian lest I deny him to have any Church Visible at all or tempt men to Infidelity by saying that Christ is so little a King and came to so little a work in the World as to have no Church save the persecuted part till An. 300 and the Reformers since 1560 save a few latent persons Men will judge of the Workman by his work and of Physicians by their Cures And though it be honourable to save one Soul they will tempt men to dishonour Christ that call almost all his Church Antichristian I would not slander one man but should I mistake and slander millions for thirteen hundred years together how great were my guilt VII I dread the turning
c. Seeing you love life and would live in peace and quietness the likeliest means to attain this is 1. To keep your Tongues from speaking evil of any man and from all other evil 2. And from falshood deceit and dissimulation for it is mens own unbridled Tongues which bring most of their troubles on them and false words that hide faults at last detected expose men more 3. Avoid all real evil and then your Righteousness will appear through the V●il of malicious slanders and falshood will be detected and not long hide your Innocency 4. And do all the good you can to all men as well as your immediate Duty to God And Nature having a love to such as do us good and a reverence of God such good works and well doing will powerfully justifie you in the Consciences of most men 5. And stand not contentiously on your right but whatever men are or do seek peace with all and be not soon weary but follow after it still in hope 12. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous and his ears are open unto their prayers but the face of the Lord it against them that do evil 12. And this is not meer policy to please men but whatever they be it is God that your lives and peace depend on and he that commandeth this is pleased with it and his Eyes watch over you for good to save you from unreasonable men and he heareth their prayers in all distress while evil speakers and doers God himself is more against than men 13. And who is he that will harm you if ye be followers of that which is good 13. If your Zeal in Religion be a Zeal of good works to set your selves earnestly as to obey God so to do good to all men he must be a very impious and diabolical man that will for this sett against you It is the likeliest way to your quietness 14. But and if ye suffer for righteousness sake happy are ye and be not afraid of their terrour neither be troubled 14. But I confess such blinded unreasonable malignant Slaves and Executioners Satan hath that will persecute you even for Righteousness sake But this is the way to and prognostick of your reward and happiness And therefore let not mens threats rage or cruelty terrifie or trouble you seeing you shall be unspeakably gainers by it 15. But sanctifie the Lord God in your hearts and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear 15. But let God always be in your hearts with the highest respect obedience and honour and be still furnished with those Reasons of your Faith and Hope that you may be ready to profess them and to give a good account of them to any that demandeth it and this with meekness and due reverence to Superiors and not with passionate upbraiding them or with disdain 16. Having a good conscience that whereas they speak evil of you as of evil doers they may be ashamed that falsly accuse your good conversation in Christ 16. Keeping your Consciences clear from guilt that they may justifie you when men accuse you and whereas men slander you as bad men and seditious and unpeaceable your good conversation according to Christ's Law and Example may shame their false accusations a better defence than bare words and disputing with them 17. For it is better if the will of God be so that ye suffer for well-doing than for evil doing 17. For if God will have you suffer it 's far better that it be for well doing than for ill doing Better for you though worse for your Persecutors For now the body only suffereth while the soul is free which else would suffer far worse than persecution 18. For Christ also hath once suffered for sins the just for the unjust that he might bring us to God 18. For Christ himself had greater sufferings in the body than we but he suffered not in the conscience of any guilt of his own but was just and suffered for the unjust to reconcile and bring us to God 18 19 20. Being put to death in the flesh but quickned by the Spirit By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison Which sometime were disobedient when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah while the ark was a preparing wherein few that is eight souls were saved by water 18 19 20. Being put to death indeed as to the flesh but made alive as to the Spirit or by the Spirit in which or by which he went and preached to the Spirits in Prison which heretofore in the days of Noah were refractory and hardned in sin and disobedience while the long suffering of God endured them and waited for their Repentance while the Ark was making and preparing and Noah preaching to them yet so impenitent were they to the last that only eight were saved by the Ark. Note It 's no wonder that Expositors of this Text differ Some think that by the Spirit should rather be in the Spirit or as to it put in direct distinction from the Body and that it 's an Argument for the immortality of the Soul by quickned being meant only that his Soul was alive while his Body was dead and that in that Soul he went then and preach't to imprisoned sinners that were drowned in the Flood say some to shew them his Triumph and what Salvation they lost and say they This is it that is called his Descending to Hell say others to offer them mercy once again say others to bring some penitents from their long imprisonment But others think that by Spirit is meant the Power of God or the Divine Nature of Christ or the Holy Ghost not Christ's Soul again en●●ing into his Body and that the preaching meant was by Christ's Spirit in Noah before the Flood and not after his Death To name other Expositions or the Reasons given for each would but perplex the Reader unless I were able so clearly to assert one of the Expositions as to confute all the rest They that think Christ's Soul and Godhead preacht to Spirits while his Body lay in the Grave suppose that those Spirits knew it whom it concerned But if it had been necessary for us to know not only Christ's preaching to our selves but to them he would surely have more clearly fold it us 21. The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us not the putting away of the filth of the flesh but the answer of a good conscience towards God by the resurrection of Jesus Christ 21. And that Salvation from the Deluge by the Ark prefigureth our Salvation in the Church from God's wrath by Baptism and that through the power of Christ's Resurrection to which we begin our Conformity when we are raised to Holiness by his Spirit as we rise out of the Water in Baptism But by Baptism I mean
not that the outward act of washing the Body serveth to this Salvation nor must you think that God layeth it on any outward Ceremony save as it is the exercise of our Obedience and Faith But it is the faithful answer to God of a resolved Soul in the Covenant of Baptism who when asked doth profess and promise to believe in and give up it self to God the Father Son and Holy Ghost and to Renounce the World the Flesh and the Devil Baptism is but the celebration of this saving Covenant and it is covenanting sincerely that is the Condition of Salvation and Washing is but the sign 22. Who is gone into heaven and is on the right hand of God angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him 22. And well may I say that Christ's Resurrection saveth sincere baptized Covenanters as God by the Ark did Noah c. when Christ thus risen is gone into Heaven advanced to the highest Authority and Honour all Angels and all Authorities and Powers in Heaven or Earth being made subject as his Enemies to their woe and his Servants to their joy shall shortly find so that he is fully able to give and do for us whatever he hath promised and we need CHAP. IV. 1. FOrasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh arm your selves likewise with the same mind for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin 2. That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men but to the will of God 1 2. Let then the sufferings of Christ have their due effect on you in conforming you to his death that you may as crucified or dead men give over sinning being as dead to fleshly lusts that ye no longer live the rest of your time in the flesh according to the lusts of your selves or any tempting men but wholly live to the will of God as your Rule and End 3. For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles when we walked in lasciviousness lusts excess of wine revellings banquettings and abominable idolatries 3. Alas we did too long live according to Heathen Sensuality and that time cannot be called back even in lasciviousness and lusts either fornication or immodesties that tend thereto and in excess of wine or strong drinks in revellings and banquettings or unnecessary feastings to gratifie fleshly appetite and lusts and in the bacchanals and jovialties of their Idolatry 4. Wherein they think it strange that you run not with them to the same excess of riot speaking evil of you 4. And though it is monstrous against humanity that reasonable men should thus live like brutes yet they stand and wonder at you as if you were the monsters or strange people because you will not be as bad and mad as they and run with them brutishly against God and Faith and Reason into this sensual excess of sports lust and riot 5. Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead 5. But the time is near when for all this they must come to Judgment and a sad account they must shortly give to the Righteous Judge of all the World 6. For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead that they might be judged according to men in the flesh but live according to God in the spirit 6. But wonder not at their obloquy nor imitate them but look to the Example of the Martyrs and those that are dead in Christ who received and obeyed the Gospel preacht to them that while they were judged and persecu●ed in the flesh according to the rage of men they might live in the Spirit unto God and obtain his glory through all such suffering 7. But the end of all things is at hand be ye therefore sober and watch unto prayer 7. But the time of their foolish rage and of your patient suffering will be but short The end of all earthly things is near therefore let soberness be to you instead of lusts and revelling and fleshly pleasure and by watching and prayer seek and wait for grace and glory 8. And above all things have fervent charity among your selves for charity shall cover the multitude of sins 8. And above all things be sure that you have and carefully preserve and exercise not only peace and mutual forbearance but a special love yea fervent love to one another even to all Christians and specially in your Societies and Relations For as love covereth and not aggravateth faults towards one another so God who hath said Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy and if ye forgive you shall be forgiven will cover and forgive the many sins of sincere loving Christians Note 1. The two Extreams that in all Ages have torn the Church should have regarded these words of Peter 1. The Papal Church-tearers that persecute all that consent not to their Canons Forms and Shadows should have remembred above all things even above your pretended plea for Obedience to you and Decency and Order have fervent Love 2. And the passive Separatists that can find faults enough in the Orders and Forms and Ceremonies of Churches to separate from the Communion of almost all on Earth should have deeplier received such Texts as this above all your superstitious pretences to more purity of Churches and better Discipline have fervent Charity 3. It is but partiality and jealousie of the Cause of Justification against the Papists which maketh some excellent Expositors distort this Text so as to exclude from its sense God's covering of our sins because they consider not aright 1. That Pardon as continued and as renewed for daily renewed sins hath more for the condition of it required in us than the first Pardon and begun Justification hath The first act of sound Faith serveth for the beginning but the continuance of it with its necessary fruits is necessary to the continuance and renewing of Pardon 2. That the Faith which is required to Justification and Pardon is giving up our selves to God the Father Son and Holy Ghost in the Baptismal Covenant That is our Christianity which is not put in opposition to that Love or Repentance which is still implied as part of the same Covenant Consent or its necessary fruit but to the Works of the Law of Moses or of Works or any that are set in competition with Christ and Free Grace If prejudice hindred not men the reading of the Angel's words to Cornelius and of Christ's forgive and ye shall be forgiven and the Parable of the pardoned Debtor cast into Prison for not pardoning his Fellow-servant with Jam. 2. and Matth. 25. would end all this controversie 9. Use hospitality one to another without grudging 10. As every man hath received the gift even so minister the same one to another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God 9 10. As God hath
