offer_v but_o lay_v hold_v of_o in_o the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n for_o of_o like_a thing_n there_o be_v always_o a_o like_a consideration_n the_o second_o place_n be_v that_o sentence_n report_v by_o the_o three_o evangelist_n matthew_n mark_v and_o luke_n and_o s._n paul_n himself_o also_o recite_v the_o institution_n of_o the_o supper_n which_o our_o saviour_n christ_n use_v say_v this_o be_v my_o body_n which_o they_o urge_v in_o the_o letter_n after_o this_o sort_n have_v not_o christ_n say_v it_o in_o plain_a term_n and_o shall_v i_o not_o believe_v it_o though_o that_o my_o carnal_a understanding_n can_v conceive_v the_o same_o to_o all_o this_o i_o answer_v first_o that_o the_o question_n be_v not_o of_o the_o word_n for_o we_o as_o well_o as_o they_o confess_v the_o same_o but_o of_o the_o sense_n of_o which_o we_o will_v speak_v anon_o second_o that_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o believe_v all_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v comprehend_v in_o god_n worde_n though_o indeed_o our_o sensual_a reason_n can_v not_o comprehend_v they_o yet_o in_o such_o sort_n must_v we_o believe_v the_o same_o and_o to_o such_o end_n as_o the_o lord_n himself_o have_v appoint_v not_o yet_o stretch_v they_o further_o than_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v we_o nor_o restrain_v they_o to_o narrow_a or_o purpose_n than_o the_o lord_n have_v appoint_v neither_o yet_o fail_v in_o the_o allegation_n of_o they_o either_o in_o the_o matter_n manner_n or_o end_n for_o if_o we_o do_v we_o do_v nothing_o else_o thereby_o but_o heap_n up_o just_a condemnation_n against_o our_o own_o soul_n circumstance_n of_o time_n place_n person_n and_o manner_n of_o do_v do_v sufficient_o prove_v the_o vanity_n and_o untruth_n of_o this_o gross_a interpretation_n for_o this_o sacrament_n be_v institute_v by_o christ_n himself_o a_o little_a before_o his_o death_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o apostle_n who_o have_v all_o their_o sense_n satisfy_v in_o the_o behold_n hear_v and_o feeling_n of_o the_o natural_a body_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n he_o himself_o sit_v at_o the_o table_n with_o they_o and_o speak_v these_o word_n in_o their_o presence_n and_o hear_n it_o can_v not_o be_v that_o that_o bread_n offer_v unto_o they_o as_o the_o pledge_n of_o his_o body_n shall_v be_v his_o natural_a body_n or_o body_n of_o flesh_n unless_o you_o will_v say_v that_o christ_n have_v two_o body_n one_o sit_v at_o the_o table_n institute_v the_o action_n of_o the_o supper_n and_o a_o other_o bear_v in_o his_o hand_n and_o deliver_v unto_o his_o apostle_n then_o the_o which_o what_o can_v be_v not_o only_o more_o absurd_a and_o
blasphemous_a in_o respct_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n himself_o but_o also_o more_o unprofitable_a and_o uncertain_a to_o we_o as_o which_o may_v provoke_v we_o to_o doubt_v whether_o of_o his_o body_n be_v crucify_v for_o our_o transgression_n now_o as_o we_o do_v just_o reject_v this_o gross_a sense_n so_o for_o the_o instruction_n of_o the_o ignorant_a and_o strengthen_v of_o the_o weak_a we_o will_v in_o a_o few_o line_n put_v down_o the_o true_a meaning_n of_o these_o word_n for_o the_o better_a performance_n whereof_o i_o will_v have_v this_o to_o be_v note_v 1_o in_o he_o first_o place_n which_o i_o be_o sure_a also_o no_o man_n of_o sound_n judgement_n can_v well_o deny_v that_o all_o word_n and_o therefore_o these_o of_o the_o supper_n must_v be_v expound_v according_a to_o the_o subject_n argument_n or_o matter_n whereof_o they_o entreat_v and_o therefore_o their_o speak_v particular_o of_o the_o lord_n supper_n must_v of_o necessity_n be_v understand_v of_o the_o sacrament_n of_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n exhibit_v unto_o we_o in_o that_o supper_n 2_o second_o i_o will_v have_v this_o to_o be_v remember_v that_o see_v all_o quality_n as_o it_o be_v of_o sacrament_n will_v bear_v for_o than_o if_o we_o shall_v grant_v that_o we_o shall_v easy_o destroy_v and_o overthrow_v all_o sacrament_n of_o the_o church_n whatsoever_o because_o in_o this_o behalf_n or_o respect_n there_o be_v a_o like_a proportion_n to_o be_v observe_v in_o one_o as_o in_o all_o and_o if_o one_o be_v deface_v in_o respect_n of_o a_o wrong_a sense_n the_o least_o can_v hardly_o or_o not_o at_o all_o stand_v upright_o 3_o three_o that_o this_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o all_o sacrament_n that_o the_o element_n and_o rite_n use_v in_o the_o same_o be_v true_a and_o effectual_a not_o sign_n only_o but_o testimony_n and_o pledge_n of_o these_o thing_n for_o the_o signify_v and_o subiect_v of_o which_o unto_o our_o sense_n they_o be_v ordain_v spiritual_a food_n &_o nourishment_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o i_o use_v these_o word_n sacramental_o &_o spiritual_o that_o thereby_o i_o may_v meet_v with_o their_o gross_a slander_n who_o when_o they_o hear_v of_o a_o sign_n and_o a_o thing_n signify_v say_v that_o we_o do_v evacuate_v and_o make_v of_o no_o force_n the_o lord_n supper_n no_o we_o be_v so_o far_o off_o from_o hold_v any_o such_o conclusion_n that_o we_o know_v and_o believe_v that_o the_o believer_n do_v beside_o the_o outward_a sign_n and_o element_n true_o receive_v by_o the_o mean_a of_o faith_n after_o a_o spiritual_a sort_n that_o which_o be_v represent_v by_o the_o outward_a element_n to_o wit_n whole_a christ_n with_o all_o his_o gift_n and_o grace_n and_o yet_o we_o do_v not_o imagine_v either_o transubstantiation_n or_o any_o such_o like_a devise_n but_o only_o think_v upon_o and_o believe_v the_o sacramental_a coniuction_n of_o the_o sign_n and_o the_o thing_n signify_v for_o those_o thing_n can_v not_o stand_v with_o the_o truth_n of_o christ_n humanity_n as_o have_v be_v bef_n re_fw-mi show_v neither_o indeed_o be_v they_o necessary_a for_o salvation_n for_o that_o we_o may_v be_v make_v partaker_n of_o christ_n it_o be_v not_o of_o necessity_n require_v that_o his_o body_n shall_v be_v real_o present_a upon_o the_o earth_n but_o it_o rather_o behoove_v we_o by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n &_o through_o faith_n to_o mount_v up_o into_o heaven_n and_o there_o to_o lay_v hold_n of_o he_o that_o we_o may_v sit_v with_o he_o in_o the_o heavenly_a place_n which_o in_o this_o life_n can_v not_o be_v perform_v in_o any_o other_o sort_n then_o in_o a_o spiritual_a manner_n &_o through_o faith_n which_o faith_n be_v beget_v and_o confirm_v in_o we_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n whereunto_o he_o use_v as_o instrument_n the_o preach_n of_o god_n word_n and_o the_o administration_n and_o use_n of_o the_o sacrament_n by_o which_o all_o our_o sense_n be_v even_o as_o it_o be_v provoke_v &_o pierce_v whole_o to_o possess_v christ_n himself_o so_o that_o you_o see_v i_o do_v figurative_o expound_v these_o word_n and_o not_o gross_o whereunto_o i_o be_o draw_v partly_o by_o these_o three_o general_a rule_n heretofore_o put_v down_o and_o partly_o by_o the_o very_a deal_n of_o the_o papist_n themselves_o who_o do_v not_o neither_o in_o the_o wine_n of_o the_o supper_n the_o other_o part_n of_o this_o sacrament_n neither_o in_o baptism_n the_o other_o sacrament_n of_o the_o church_n which_o then_o alone_a god_n have_v give_v unto_o it_o acknowledge_v any_o such_o gross_a transubstantiation_n or_o change_n and_o yet_o i_o be_o sure_a there_o be_v as_o great_a reason_n why_o that_o alteration_n shall_v be_v as_o well_o in_o the_o water_n of_o baptism_n &_o in_o the_o wine_n of_o the_o supper_n as_o in_o the_o bread_n thereof_o if_o there_o be_v not_o let_v they_o show_v any_o cause_n to_o the_o contrary_a if_o they_o can_v there_o rest_v now_o the_o three_o objection_n take_v from_o the_o omnipotency_n or_o almighty_a power_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n press_v after_o this_o manner_n be_v not_o christ_n god_n and_o so_o by_o that_o mean_v omnipotent_a and_o can_v not_o he_o perform_v the_o truth_n of_o that_o he_o have_v speak_v to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o though_o we_o shall_v grant_v it_o as_o true_a that_o christ_n as_o he_o be_v god_n can_v do_v all_o thing_n and_o be_v every_o where_o yet_o we_o know_v that_o as_o he_o be_v man_n he_o can_v not_o and_o therefore_o the_o question_n between_o the_o transubstantiator_n &_o we_o be_v now_o not_o of_o the_o presence_n of_o christ_n deity_n in_o the_o sacrament_n but_o of_o the_o presence_n of_o his_o human_a body_n we_o say_v that_o if_o we_o shall_v grant_v this_o yet_o can_v it_o no_o whit_n at_o all_o prejudice_n we_o neither_o can_v they_o gain_v their_o cause_n thereby_o for_o unless_o they_o can_v prove_v christ_n as_o he_o be_v man_n to_o be_v omnipotent_a and_o every_o where_o which_o thing_n they_o shall_v never_o be_v able_a to_o do_v they_o have_v say_v as_o much_o as_o if_o they_o have_v say_v nothing_o but_o let_v we_o for_o reason_v sake_n grant_v that_o christ_n as_o he_o be_v man_n be_v omnipotent_a even_o as_o god_n the_o father_n be_v do_v it_o therefore_o follow_v that_o because_o he_o can_v do_v every_o thing_n he_o therefore_o either_o will_v do_v the_o same_o or_o indeed_o do_v it_o i_o suppose_v no._n for_o beside_o that_o in_o school_n it_o be_v common_o say_v à _fw-la posse_fw-la ad_fw-la magnify_v his_o almighty_a power_n and_o great_o to_o strengthen_v our_o weak_a faith_n yet_o we_o believe_v firm_o that_o he_o will_v not_o only_o do_v nothing_o but_o that_o he_o can_v not_o do_v any_o thing_n in_o regard_n of_o we_o contrary_a to_o that_o will_n of_o he_o that_o he_o have_v reveal_v for_o we_o in_o his_o word_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o be_v not_o the_o abridgement_n or_o shorten_n of_o his_o power_n for_o be_v it_o
far_o from_o mortal_a man_n to_o presume_v in_o any_o thing_n though_o never_o so_o little_a to_o restrain_v the_o eternal_a power_n of_o the_o immortal_a god_n but_o because_o his_o will_n and_o power_n in_o respect_n of_o we_o be_v so_o conjoin_v and_o knit_v together_o that_o look_n whatsoever_o he_o will_v do_v that_o he_o can_v do_v and_o look_v whatsoever_o he_o can_v do_v that_o he_o will_v do_v to_o make_v this_o plain_a by_o a_o example_n we_o all_o know_v that_o god_n in_o respect_n both_o of_o his_o self_n and_o that_o all_o thing_n be_v possible_a with_o he_o can_v if_o he_o will_v save_o all_o man_n and_o yet_o we_o fear_v not_o to_o say_v that_o in_o respect_n of_o we_o he_o can_v not_o save_v all_o man_n because_o we_o know_v by_o his_o reveal_v will_n that_o he_o will_v not_o save_v they_o all_o for_o some_o must_v be_v the_o vessel_n ordain_v for_o destruction_n as_o well_o as_o other_o vessel_n of_o salvation_n and_o eternal_a life_n the_o like_a may_v we_o say_v for_o this_o matter_n of_o the_o supper_n that_o though_o we_o be_v persuade_v that_o christ_n as_o he_o be_v man_n may_v be_v every_o where_o yet_o because_o he_o have_v reveal_v in_o his_o word_n that_o he_o will_v have_v his_o body_n to_o be_v circumscriptible_a and_o tie_v to_o a_o place_n to_o wit_n heaven_n yea_o which_o be_v more_o to_o a_o certain_a place_n in_o heaven_n that_o therefore_o it_o can_v be_v no_o injury_n at_o all_o to_o he_o neither_o any_o debase_v of_o his_o omnipotent_a power_n to_o say_v that_o now_o he_o can_v be_v bodily_a in_o the_o sacrament_n much_o less_o bodily_a in_o so_o many_o sacrament_n as_o be_v celebrate_v and_o minister_v in_o so_o sundry_a and_o infinite_a place_n at_o one_o time_n and_o this_o i_o think_v sufficient_a to_o all_o these_o objection_n be_v willing_a here_o to_o finish_v this_o present_a short_a treatise_n save_v that_o i_o have_v think_v good_a in_o this_o place_n to_o add_v even_o as_o a_o challenge_n to_o the_o adverse_a party_n and_o as_o matter_n of_o necessary_a instruction_n to_o such_o as_o already_o see_v the_o truth_n these_o three_o point_n follow_v 1_o first_o that_o i_o be_o ready_a in_o all_o holy_a love_n further_o to_o answer_v any_o thing_n that_o christianly_o shall_v be_v further_o object_v concern_v this_o question_n i_o say_v christianly_o object_v for_o if_o any_o shall_v either_o curious_o or_o captious_o propound_v any_o thing_n i_o think_v it_o most_o convenient_a rather_o to_o leave_v such_o in_o their_o own_o folly_n for_o a_o season_n till_o it_o please_v god_n at_o some_o one_o time_n or_o other_o even_o extraordinary_o as_o it_o be_v to_o make_v they_o to_o see_v the_o same_o if_o it_o shall_v so_o please_v he_o then_o to_o spend_v time_n and_o to_o travail_v in_o satisfy_v of_o their_o vain_a curiosity_n 2_o second_o that_o though_o this_o point_n of_o transubstantiation_n bring_v in_o by_o papist_n be_v great_a and_o gross_a concern_v the_o matter_n of_o the_o supper_n yet_o that_o they_o fail_v not_o alone_o herein_o in_o that_o behalf_n but_o hold_v many_o mo_z error_n concern_v that_o point_n some_o of_o they_o as_o palpable_a if_o not_o more_o gross_a and_o blasphemous_a than_o this_o and_o some_o of_o they_o less_o a_o few_o i_o will_v rehearse_v desire_v other_o to_o consider_v of_o the_o rest_n 1_o first_o in_o that_o they_o make_v it_o a_o sacrifice_n propitiatory_a for_o the_o quick_a and_o the_o dead_a utter_o evacuate_v by_o that_o mean_n and_o make_v of_o no_o force_n the_o eternal_a priesthood_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n which_o consist_v in_o this_o that_o he_o have_v once_o for_o all_o upon_o the_o altar_n of_o the_o cross_n offer_v up_o himself_o unto_o god_n the_o father_n a_o full_a and_o sufficient_a sacrifice_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o people_n as_o the_o apostle_n plain_o proove_v in_o the_o 7.8.9_o and_o 10._o chapter_n of_o his_o epistle_n to_o the_o hebrew_n but_o no_o marvel_n that_o they_o shall_v annihilate_v his_o office_n which_o destroy_v his_o person_n as_o these_o man_n do_v by_o confound_v the_o propriety_n of_o either_o nature_n as_o have_v be_v before_o decree_v 2_o second_o there_o be_v but_o a_o little_a less_a leven_n in_o that_o matter_n that_o they_o hold_v of_o concountancie_n by_o which_o they_o have_v spoil_v the_o people_n of_o the_o use_n of_o the_o cup_n which_o both_o by_o christ_n own_o institution_n and_o by_o his_o express_a commandment_n say_v drink_v you_o all_o of_o this_o do_v in_o all_o truth_n and_o uprightness_n belong_v unto_o they_o and_o all_o this_o they_o have_v do_v under_o this_o shadow_n that_o because_o no_o body_n be_v without_o blood_n and_o they_o have_v before_o presuppose_v that_o the_o bread_n be_v turn_v into_o the_o body_n as_o indeed_o if_o man_n will_v presuppose_v either_o unpossible_a or_o untrue_a thing_n every_o thing_n will_v follow_v of_o it_o eat_v the_o body_n therefore_o must_v it_o needs_o follow_v that_o they_o have_v drink_v also_o his_o blood_n but_o i_o know_v not_o whether_o i_o shall_v blame_v they_o for_o their_o beastliness_n or_o reproove_v they_o for_o their_o pride_n that_o preparation_n which_o be_v the_o first_o respect_v either_o god_n or_o man_n now_o that_o which_o concern_v god_n be_v comprehend_v under_o true_a faith_n and_o unfeigned_a repentance_n as_o that_o which_o concern_v man_n be_v comprise_v under_o sound_n love_n and_o i_o call_v they_o sound_v true_a and_o unfeigned_a and_o yet_o not_o perfect_a because_o perfection_n proper_o signify_v that_o unto_o which_o nothing_o can_v be_v add_v can_v be_v find_v in_o man_n during_o this_o life_n and_o this_o i_o speak_v partly_o to_o stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o such_o as_o dream_v of_o a_o perfection_n in_o this_o life_n and_o partly_o to_o teach_v we_o that_o our_o imperfection_n shall_v not_o hinder_v we_o from_o draw_v nigh_o thereto_o so_o that_o we_o do_v not_o foster_v and_o food_n ourselves_o in_o they_o see_v that_o otherwise_o the_o sacrament_n shall_v stand_v we_o in_o stead_n if_o we_o be_v not_o unperfect_a for_o it_o be_v a_o help_n and_o succour_v ordain_v by_o god_n against_o our_o natural_a infirmity_n and_o weakness_n by_o faith_n
i_o mean_v not_o only_o a_o general_a belief_n of_o all_o the_o canonical_a book_n of_o the_o old_a and_o new_a testament_n or_o a_o ground_a knowledge_n alone_o of_o the_o point_n and_o principle_n of_o christian_a religion_n but_o a_o assure_a persuasion_n that_o whatsoever_o the_o lord_n have_v reveal_v in_o his_o word_n as_o he_o have_v do_v the_o same_o for_o other_o so_o he_o have_v do_v it_o particular_o for_o i_o so_o that_o this_o faith_n be_v necessary_a to_o he_o that_o shall_v communicate_v both_o because_o that_o otherwise_o he_o be_v on_o the_o earth_n can_v take_v hold_n of_o christ_n in_o heaven_n for_o faith_n be_v it_o by_o which_o he_o may_v apply_v unto_o himself_o particular_o christ_n jesus_n and_o all_o his_o merit_n to_o the_o assure_a feeling_n of_o the_o free_a pardon_n and_o full_a forgiveness_n of_o all_o his_o sin_n of_o the_o one_o side_n and_o the_o imputation_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n on_o the_o other_o side_n and_o also_o that_o thereby_o he_o may_v be_v assure_v that_o that_o which_o he_o do_v either_o in_o the_o administration_n or_o participation_n of_o that_o holy_a action_n be_v acceptable_a before_o god_n for_o without_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v he_o which_o property_v indeed_o or_o effect_n rather_o if_o a_o man_n only_o have_v they_o shall_v make_v his_o faith_n to_o differ_v from_o all_o the_o vain_a imagination_n of_o devil_n and_o wicked_a man_n whatsoever_o by_o repentance_n i_o understand_v a_o sincere_a hatred_n of_o all_o our_o former_a sin_n and_o iniquity_n whatsoever_o and_o a_o sound_a love_n of_o all_o righteousness_n and_o well_o do_v proceed_v from_o the_o right_a reverence_n and_o love_a fear_n of_o the_o majesty_n of_o god_n in_o our_o heart_n which_o holy_a affection_n do_v every_o day_n by_o little_a and_o little_a work_n in_o we_o the_o forsake_v of_o ourselves_o and_o the_o subdue_a of_o the_o sinful_a lust_n and_o affection_n of_o our_o own_o flesh_n to_o the_o end_n 1_o first_o in_o earnest_a prayer_n unto_o god_n not_o only_o for_o the_o lively_a feel_n of_o these_o grace_n exhibit_v but_o also_o for_o the_o fructify_a of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o his_o sacrament_n in_o our_o heart_n and_o that_o not_o for_o the_o time_n present_v alone_o but_o even_o for_o the_o whole_a race_n and_o course_n of_o our_o life_n second_o in_o humble_a thanksgiving_n for_o the_o unestimable_a riches_n and_o treasure_n of_o grace_n and_o of_o goodness_n which_o it_o please_v he_o in_o his_o church_n and_o namely_o by_o the_o use_n of_o his_o worde_n and_o sacrament_n not_o only_o to_o offer_v but_o also_o to_o bestow_v upon_o his_o people_n the_o particular_n whereof_o be_v before_o recite_v and_o hereunto_o we_o may_v be_v provoke_v by_o consideration_n of_o this_o that_o the_o lord_n free_o and_o of_o his_o own_o goodness_n give_v we_o those_o merit_n not_o only_a when_o we_o have_v not_o deserve_v the_o least_o of_o they_o but_o even_o then_o when_o every_o one_o of_o we_o have_v deserve_v eternal_a death_n and_o condemnation_n to_o be_v pour_v forth_o upon_o we_o and_o we_o 3_o and_o last_o in_o care_n and_o conscience_n of_o a_o holy_a conversation_n that_o see_v christ_n dwell_v in_o our_o heart_n by_o faith_n and_o we_o have_v our_o spiritual_a life_n and_o be_v from_o he_o that_o therefore_o we_o shall_v so_o live_v as_o we_o may_v not_o only_o glorify_v he_o in_o this_o life_n but_o that_o when_o the_o day_n of_o our_o wearisome_a pilgrimage_n shall_v be_v end_v we_o may_v be_v glorify_v with_o he_o in_o
