there_o be_v any_o such_o excellency_n in_o a_o holy_a life_n that_o they_o shall_v so_o speedy_o and_o solemn_o resolve_v upon_o it_o and_o though_o they_o can_v like_v well_o enough_o to_o go_v to_o heaven_n when_o they_o must_v needs_o leave_v this_o world_n yet_o they_o look_v upon_o that_o day_n so_o far_o off_o that_o they_o be_v in_o no_o great_a haste_n of_o make_v sure_a their_o future_a happiness_n but_o think_v it_o may_v be_v time_n enough_o to_o do_v that_o a_o great_a while_n hence_o and_o can_v any_o man_n wonder_v if_o those_o who_o be_v no_o more_o sensible_a of_o any_o benefit_n they_o have_v by_o christ_n be_v very_o slack_a and_o negligent_a in_o a_o thankful_a remembrance_n of_o his_o death_n and_o of_o those_o benefit_n which_o thereby_o we_o enjoy_v and_o hope_v for_o which_o be_v the_o great_a end_n of_o celebrate_v this_o sacrament_n no_o marvel_n if_o such_o as_o these_o always_o find_v one_o excuse_n or_o other_o to_o keep_v away_o from_o that_o which_o they_o never_o intend_v to_o part_v with_o whatever_o come_v on_o it_o and_o the_o stupid_a senseless_a one_o that_o know_v not_o the_o worth_n nor_o see_v the_o need_n of_o this_o ordinance_n or_o any_o other_o duty_n of_o religion_n who_o live_v as_o heathenish_o as_o if_o they_o have_v never_o hear_v of_o god_n and_o christ_n and_o another_o world_n nor_o do_v they_o care_v to_o be_v instruct_v in_o these_o point_n as_o if_o they_o be_v not_o at_o all_o concern_v in_o they_o or_o else_o they_o be_v such_o that_o abstain_v from_o it_o out_o of_o doubt_v and_o fear_n not_o think_v themselves_o worthy_a or_o not_o know_v whether_o they_o be_v worthy_a or_o not_o of_o this_o sort_n there_o be_v many_o excellent_a christian_n who_o too_o much_o indulge_v to_o their_o own_o melancholy_a and_o despondent_a apprehension_n and_o also_o many_o weak_a but_o i_o hope_v honest_a well-meaning_a people_n who_o seem_v to_o have_v a_o great_a esteem_n for_o this_o sacrament_n but_o have_v always_o hear_v what_o a_o dangerous_a thing_n it_o be_v to_o receive_v it_o unworthy_o dare_v not_o venture_v upon_o it_o not_o be_v well_o acquaint_v wâ—th_v the_o nature_n and_o reason_n of_o it_o and_o be_v doubtful_a whether_o they_o be_v fit_a to_o come_v or_o not_o be_v also_o i_o fear_v too_o languid_a and_o heartless_a in_o desire_v after_o it_o or_o in_o make_v preparation_n for_o it_o and_o for_o such_o as_o these_o principal_o do_v i_o intend_v my_o direction_n by_o those_o that_o be_v guilty_a of_o miscarriage_n in_o the_o do_n of_o this_o duty_n i_o mean_v such_o as_o rush_v upon_o it_o ignorant_o and_o rash_o not_o well_o weigh_v what_o they_o do_v and_o who_o notwithstanding_o their_o customary_a attendance_n at_o the_o lord_n table_n continue_v their_o old_a sinful_a course_n of_o life_n these_o also_o i_o hope_v may_v receive_v some_o benefit_n from_o the_o follow_a discourse_n together_o with_o the_o most_o profane_a and_o ignorant_a whilst_o i_o shall_v endeavour_v plain_o to_o show_v the_o intention_n of_o this_o sacrament_n and_o persuade_v they_o to_o attend_v thereupon_o in_o a_o regular_a manner_n for_o since_o in_o behalf_n of_o those_o for_o who_o especial_o i_o write_v this_o my_o great_a business_n be_v to_o show_v who_o it_o be_v that_o be_v worthy_a to_o partake_v of_o this_o ordinance_n and_o wherein_o this_o worthiness_n do_v honour_n to_o and_o plead_v for_o the_o same_o efficacy_n and_o necessity_n of_o their_o invention_n as_o of_o christ_n own_o institution_n wherein_o the_o papist_n be_v gross_o guilty_a what_o do_v they_o better_v who_o will_v cast_v forth_o of_o the_o church_n of_o those_o sacrament_n which_o our_o lord_n have_v ordain_v as_o if_o they_o be_v useless_a unnecessary_a thing_n which_o be_v the_o doctrine_n of_o our_o quaker_n if_o there_o be_v nothing_o else_o to_o be_v say_v in_o answer_n to_o the_o unreasonable_a pretence_n of_o these_o man_n be_v it_o not_o enough_o that_o we_o have_v a_o judge_n in_o this_o case_n what_o you_o ought_v to_o do_v and_o what_o not_o be_v you_o servant_n or_o be_v you_o your_o own_o master_n come_v the_o word_n of_o god_n forth_o from_o you_o be_v christian_a religion_n something_o of_o your_o devise_v that_o you_o may_v frame_v it_o and_o appoint_v the_o duty_n of_o it_o as_o you_o shall_v see_v best_o or_o come_v this_o
as_o these_o affect_v your_o heart_n with_o a_o sense_n of_o your_o iniquity_n humble_o betake_v yourselves_o to_o god_n and_o lay_v open_a all_o before_o he_o by_o a_o free_a and_o full_a confession_n acknowledge_v what_o wretched_a heinous_a sinner_n you_o be_v and_o how_o unworthy_a of_o the_o least_o favour_n and_o beg_v of_o he_o to_o work_v and_o increase_v in_o you_o that_o true_a and_o kind_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n which_o may_v fit_v you_o for_o mercy_n and_o cease_v not_o by_o your_o good_a will_n from_o this_o confession_n till_o you_o find_v your_o soul_n even_o melt_v within_o you_o in_o the_o apprehension_n of_o your_o own_o vileness_n but_o however_o cease_v not_o till_o you_o find_v in_o your_o heart_n a_o loathe_n of_o every_o sin_n and_o of_o yourselves_o by_o reason_n of_o it_o and_o if_o you_o have_v but_o a_o inward_a sense_n of_o your_o sore_n and_o pollution_n you_o will_v not_o want_v such_o word_n to_o express_v it_o as_o will_v be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n only_o see_v that_o you_o be_v sincere_a and_o let_v your_o heart_n make_v your_o confession_n rather_o than_o your_o tongue_n labour_v to_o be_v as_o sensible_a of_o your_o case_n as_o you_o will_v be_v if_o now_o you_o stand_v before_o a_o king_n who_o you_o have_v offend_v from_o who_o except_o you_o can_v beg_v a_o pardon_n you_o must_v present_o be_v put_v to_o death_n of_o which_o pardon_n there_o be_v good_a hope_n if_o he_o do_v but_o perceive_v you_o to_o be_v real_o sorry_a for_o your_o fault_n oh_o how_o affectionate_a and_o earnest_a will_v you_o be_v in_o this_o case_n and_o will_v have_v word_n at_o will_n to_o express_v yourself_o how_o passionate_o will_v you_o acknowledge_v and_o bewail_v the_o offence_n you_o have_v commit_v and_o with_o if_o your_o importunity_n do_v not_o prevail_v thus_o behave_v yourselves_o towards_o god_n and_o believe_v that_o he_o stand_v over_o you_o now_o in_o your_o closet_n and_o hearken_v to_o your_o prayer_n and_o observe_v whether_o you_o be_v hearty_a in_o they_o or_o not_o but_o remember_v all_o this_o while_n it_o be_v a_o inward-dislike_n and_o abhorrence_n of_o sin_n wherein_o the_o truth_n of_o your_o repentance_n consist_v more_o than_o in_o bare_a confess_v it_o and_o speak_v against_o it_o with_o the_o great_a fervour_n these_o be_v require_v too_o but_o beware_v of_o take_v up_o with_o these_o beware_v i_o say_v as_o ever_o you_o hope_v for_o mercy_n of_o retain_v any_o secret_a like_n to_o sin_n or_o the_o least_o thought_n of_o continue_v in_o it_o still_o whilst_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o stir_v you_o revile_v it_o as_o such_o a_o abominable_a thing_n but_o rather_o if_o you_o find_v in_o your_o soul_n a_o kind_n of_o hanker_a after_o some_o old_a lust_n not_o yet_o thorough_o mortify_v betake_v yourselves_o to_o those_o consideration_n which_o may_v bring_v you_o out_o of_o love_n with_o it_o as_o how_o little_a its_o like_a to_o do_v for_o you_o what_o a_o happiness_n it_o do_v now_o and_o will_v hereafter_o deprive_v you_o of_o what_o a_o misery_n it_o lead_v to_o with_o other_o the_o like_a former_o lay_v down_o and_o quit_v not_o these_o thought_n till_o you_o find_v yourselves_o turn_v against_o it_o for_o once_o again_o let_v i_o assure_v you_o then_o and_o never_o till_o then_o be_v your_o repentance_n right_a when_o you_o be_v not_o only_o bring_v to_o grieve_v for_o sin_n but_o to_o hate_v it_o when_o your_o heart_n be_v not_o only_o break_v in_o the_o remembrance_n of_o it_o but_o be_v break_v off_o from_o and_o thorough_o bend_v against_o it_o though_o this_o exercise_n of_o repentance_n seem_v most_o proper_o preparative_n to_o the_o work_n you_o be_v go_v about_o yet_o in_o such_o a_o penitent_a humble_a frame_n will_v i_o have_v you_o be_v even_o when_o you_o be_v at_o the_o lord_n table_n if_o you_o eat_v this_o bread_n and_o mingle_v the_o wine_n with_o tear_n it_o will_v be_v never_o the_o worse_o for_o your_o soul_n and_o must_v it_o not_o needs_o affect_v thou_o to_o behold_v christ_n body_n break_v and_o his_o blood_n pour_v out_o here_o in_o a_o figure_n and_o then_o to_o think_v with_o thyself_o this_o be_v sin_n my_o sin_n even_o my_o pride_n and_o earthliness_n and_o all_o the_o wickedness_n of_o my_o heart_n and_o life_n be_v part_n of_o that_o load_n which_o he_o bear_v on_o his_o own_o body_n on_o the_o cross_n when_o he_o cry_v out_o my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o may_v not_o the_o lord_n call_v to_o i_o and_o even_o show_v i_o the_o print_n of_o my_o many_o grievous_a sin_n in_o his_o hand_n and_o foot_n and_o the_o deep_a stab_n they_o give_v he_o and_o yet_o ungrateful_a wretch_n that_o i_o be_o how_o little_a have_v i_o value_v this_o entertainment_n to_o sin_n after_o i_o have_v hear_v what_o it_o have_v do_v against_o christ_n and_o to_o deny_v entertainment_n to_o he_o after_o i_o have_v hear_v how_o much_o he_o have_v do_v for_o i_o be_v his_o kindness_n such_o as_o to_o bleed_v for_o my_o sin_n and_o shall_v not_o i_o weep_v for_o they_o especial_o for_o the_o unkindness_n i_o have_v show_v to_o he_o as_o god_n never_o show_v great_a love_n to_o man_n than_o in_o deliver_v up_o his_o son_n for_o our_o offence_n so_o he_o never_o show_v great_a hatred_n of_o sin_n than_o by_o this_o action_n and_o therefore_o conformable_o as_o we_o ought_v hereby_o to_o be_v bring_v to_o the_o great_a love_n of_o god_n so_o to_o the_o deep_a hatred_n of_o sin_n and_o humiliation_n for_o it_o but_o i_o have_v former_o more_o full_o show_v how_o the_o consideration_n of_o christ_n death_n may_v bring_v we_o to_o true_a repentance_n and_o what_o i_o there_o speak_v chief_o of_o a_o change_n of_o state_n may_v be_v apply_v to_o the_o particular_a exercise_n of_o repentance_n wherefore_o i_o shall_v insist_v no_o more_o on_o this_o only_o let_v i_o meet_v with_o a_o objection_n that_o may_v perhaps_o be_v in_o the_o mind_n of_o some_o namely_o that_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n at_o this_o time_n scarce_o seem_v consistent_a with_o that_o hope_v of_o mercy_n that_o joy_n and_o thankfulness_n which_o be_v chief_o require_v in_o the_o communicant_a know_v therefore_o that_o i_o press_v no_o sorrow_n but_o what_o be_v a_o preparation_n to_o joy_n and_o do_v even_o animate_v and_o exalt_v it_o whilst_o the_o humble_a christian_a reflect_v upon_o his_o own_o nothingnesse_n and_o unworthiness_n and_o thence_o be_v carry_v forth_o to_o the_o great_a admiration_n of_o that_o mercy_n that_o have_v so_o promise_v and_o will_v do_v it_o wherefore_o this_o sacrament_n which_o you_o be_v about_o to_o receive_v be_v a_o seal_n of_o that_o covenant_n you_o be_v to_o take_v it_o as_o a_o assurance_n and_o pledge_n that_o all_o the_o blessing_n of_o it_o such_o thing_n as_o i_o direct_v you_o to_o pray_v for_o shall_v be_v bestow_v upon_o you_o in_o that_o time_n and_o order_n which_o god_n see_v best_a
