christian_a religion_n they_o can_v have_v no_o ground_n or_o provocation_n to_o persecute_v it_o because_o it_o be_v not_o only_o by_o its_o law_n but_o by_o its_o very_a constitution_n in_o the_o first_o place_n tender_a of_o all_o the_o right_n of_o civil_a government_n but_o if_o notwithstanding_o that_o they_o be_v resolve_v to_o proceed_v against_o they_o they_o have_v nothing_o more_o to_o say_v or_o do_v for_o themselves_o then_o to_o lay_v down_o their_o life_n with_o all_o possible_a meekness_n in_o submission_n to_o their_o royal_a will_n and_o pleasure_n and_o hope_v they_o will_v not_o take_v it_o for_o any_o piece_n of_o stubbornness_n or_o affect_a disobedience_n that_o they_o will_v not_o renounce_v their_o faith_n nor_o quit_v their_o hope_n in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n out_o of_o compliance_n with_o their_o command_n when_o they_o see_v they_o so_o much_o in_o good_a earnest_n as_o to_o be_v ready_a to_o lay_v down_o their_o life_n out_o of_o pure_a submission_n to_o their_o authority_n such_o a_o competition_n as_o this_o can_v be_v avoid_v upon_o the_o supposition_n of_o the_o real_a truth_n of_o christianity_n but_o then_o upon_o supposition_n of_o its_o nature_n it_o be_v impossible_a that_o it_o can_v be_v any_o way_n prejudicial_a to_o civil_a government_n to_o which_o by_o its_o obligation_n to_o peaceable_a suffering_n under_o it_o it_o can_v avoid_v to_o discharge_v its_o whole_a duty_n of_o subjection_n to_o it_o if_o it_o be_v say_v that_o though_o this_o be_v the_o real_a state_n of_o christianity_n in_o itself_o it_o can_v be_v expect_v that_o its_o professor_n shall_v be_v so_o perfect_a and_o so_o free_a from_o passion_n but_o that_o they_o may_v be_v provoke_v to_o resistance_n by_o oppression_n to_o this_o it_o be_v easy_o answer_v that_o how_o much_o soever_o the_o christian_a religion_n allow_v for_o other_o infirmity_n of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n this_o be_v open_a defiance_n and_o contradiction_n to_o it_o so_o that_o the_o man_n that_o pretend_v to_o christianity_n and_o yet_o can_v be_v prevail_v upon_o by_o any_o temptation_n to_o entertain_v one_o thought_n of_o it_o be_v a_o villain_n a_o cutthroat_n a_o traitor_n and_o a_o rebel_n not_o only_o against_o his_o king_n but_o his_o saviour_n and_o therefore_o whenever_o prince_n be_v encounter_v with_o any_o pretence_n whatsoever_o of_o disturbance_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o religion_n for_o that_o very_a reason_n alone_o they_o ought_v to_o cut_v they_o off_o as_o the_o most_o incorrigible_a and_o most_o unpardonable_a sort_n of_o traitor_n and_o if_o they_o be_v christian_n themselves_o and_o have_v any_o kindness_n for_o the_o honour_n of_o their_o religion_n to_o make_v such_o shameless_a pretender_n to_o it_o the_o example_n of_o their_o utmost_a severity_n it_o be_v the_o very_a top_n of_o all_o blasphemy_n as_o well_o as_o rebellion_n in_o short_a there_o can_v be_v nothing_o more_o evident_a than_o this_o that_o christianity_n itself_o as_o it_o be_v found_v upon_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o cross_n can_v never_o do_v any_o harm_n to_o civil_a government_n so_o if_o it_o be_v ever_o abuse_v and_o profane_v to_o such_o design_n they_o that_o do_v it_o be_v the_o worst_a of_o villain_n that_o deserve_v the_o utmost_a punishment_n that_o can_v be_v inflict_v upon_o they_o in_o this_o life_n and_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o meet_v with_o it_o in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o that_o i_o think_v be_v all_o that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o any_o law_n to_o do_v to_o deter_v those_o that_o it_o will_v oblige_v from_o offend_v against_o it_o by_o all_o the_o penalty_n that_o god_n or_o man_n can_v inflict_v §._o vi_o but_o second_o beside_o this_o general_a doctrine_n of_o the_o cross_n that_o cut_v up_o the_o very_a root_n of_o all_o resistance_n to_o lawful_a power_n there_o be_v great_a number_n of_o particular_a law_n peculiar_a to_o this_o religion_n that_o lop_v off_o all_o its_o branch_n and_o pretence_n by_o advance_v the_o reverence_n that_o be_v due_a to_o authority_n and_o require_v from_o all_o that_o profess_v any_o obedience_n to_o that_o a_o more_o accurate_a obedience_n and_o subjection_n to_o their_o governor_n than_o their_o governor_n can_v have_v oblige_v they_o to_o by_o their_o own_o authority_n so_o that_o of_o all_o man_n the_o christian_n must_v be_v the_o best_a subject_n by_o his_o very_a profession_n so_o far_o be_v he_o from_o be_v bring_v under_o any_o probable_a temptation_n of_o disrespect_n to_o his_o superior_n by_o his_o christianity_n that_o by_o that_o be_v his_o governor_n what_o they_o will_v caligula_n nero_n or_o domitian_n he_o be_v bind_v by_o a_o new_a obligation_n under_o no_o less_o penalty_n than_o the_o divine_a displeasure_n to_o give_v they_o the_o high_a honour_n and_o the_o low_a subjection_n it_o be_v a_o endless_a work_n to_o enumerate_v all_o passage_n in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n to_o this_o purpose_n it_o be_v more_o frequent_o and_o more_o earnest_o urge_v then_o any_o other_o duty_n because_o as_o mr._n b._n very_o well_o observe_v in_o his_o book_n of_o the_o lawfulness_n of_o rebellion_n every_o man_n be_v natural_o selfish_a and_o proud_a 377._o and_o apt_a to_o break_v the_o bound_n that_o god_n have_v set_v we_o and_o to_o be_v king_n and_o law_n to_o ourselves_o this_o rebel_a disobedient_a disposition_n therefore_o shall_v be_v first_o resist_v and_o subdue_v as_o a_o great_a enemy_n to_o the_o peace_n of_o nation_n than_o the_o fault_n of_o prince_n be_v and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v allege_v one_o or_o two_o of_o the_o most_o pregnant_a text_n against_o it_o to_o show_v both_o the_o impudence_n and_o impiety_n of_o those_o man_n and_o himself_o in_o particular_a who_o dare_v reconcile_v any_o pretence_n to_o christianity_n with_o the_o least_o disrespect_n to_o sovereign_a power_n and_o whilst_o they_o lay_v claim_v to_o great_a holiness_n and_o purity_n than_o their_o neighbour_n be_v put_v continual_a slight_n and_o affront_v upon_o their_o governor_n and_o whenever_o they_o can_v gain_v a_o opportunity_n by_o the_o assistance_n of_o the_o rabble_n blush_v not_o with_o all_o their_o demureness_n to_o wrestle_v with_o they_o for_o their_o supremacy_n which_o be_v such_o a_o rank_a piece_n of_o blasphemy_n such_o a_o bare-faced_n appearance_n of_o antichrist_n mahomet_n and_o hildebrand_n as_o no_o good_a christian_n can_v sufficient_o abhor_v nor_o any_o wise_a magistrate_n sufficient_o punish_v though_o the_o great_a affront_n of_o all_o be_v to_o the_o holy_a scripture_n themselves_o for_o when_o they_o have_v so_o clear_o and_o severe_o forbid_v all_o resistance_n to_o supreme_a power_n when_o the_o rule_n that_o they_o have_v give_v in_o this_o case_n be_v so_o absolute_a and_o universal_a to_o prevent_v all_o evasion_n when_o beside_o the_o great_a authority_n of_o the_o command_n itself_o they_o enforce_v it_o by_o its_o own_o wisdom_n and_o reasonableness_n in_o a_o word_n when_o it_o be_v tie_v upon_o we_o by_o all_o the_o strong_a obligation_n both_o of_o power_n interest_n and_o ingenuity_n after_o all_o this_o to_o escape_v the_o force_n of_o a_o law_n so_o careful_o enact_v be_v to_o pass_v a_o open_a slight_n upon_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o legislator_n himself_o but_o to_o make_v these_o very_a precept_n that_o be_v give_v on_o purpose_n to_o cut_v off_o all_o pretence_n of_o resistance_n so_o many_o warrant_n and_o commission_n give_v to_o subject_n for_o raise_v rebellion_n against_o their_o sovereign_n as_o have_v be_v do_v in_o our_o age_n exceed_v all_o the_o impiety_n of_o man_n nay_o of_o devil_n too_o in_o all_o former_a age_n for_o what_o can_v be_v more_o clear_o and_o full_o express_v then_o st._n paul_n discourse_n to_o the_o roman_n chap._n 13_o let_v every_o soul_n be_v subject_a to_o the_o high_a power_n for_o there_o be_v no_o power_n but_o of_o god_n the_o power_n that_o now_o be_v be_v ordain_v of_o god_n whosoever_o therefore_o resist_v the_o power_n resist_v the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n and_o they_o that_o resist_v shall_v receive_v to_o themselves_o damnation_n etc._n etc._n here_o be_v no_o restriction_n no_o reservation_n it_o be_v the_o catholic_a duty_n of_o all_o mankind_n and_o stand_v upon_o such_o reason_n as_o equal_o effect_v all_o and_o first_o from_o the_o original_a of_o all_o authority_n it_o be_v from_o god_n it_o be_v not_o say_v because_o those_o in_o power_n be_v either_o the_o best_a or_o the_o wise_a man_n but_o be_v the_o man_n what_o they_o will_v they_o have_v their_o authority_n from_o god_n himself_o and_o for_o that_o reason_n he_o require_v subjection_n to_o they_o as_o to_o himself_o and_o therefore_o look_v upon_o all_o resistance_n to_o these_o his_o vicegerent_n as_o a_o affront_n to_o the_o authority_n of_o his_o own_o commission_n whosoever_o resist_v the_o power_n resist_v the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n and_o then_o no_o
wonder_n if_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n follow_v upon_o it_o and_o they_o that_o resist_v shall_v receive_v to_o themselves_o damnation_n but_o though_o this_o argument_n from_o the_o divine_a original_a of_o government_n be_v so_o strong_a a_o enforcement_n of_o this_o duty_n yet_o the_o apostle_n go_v on_o to_o tie_v it_o hard_o and_o that_o be_v from_o its_o end_n the_o good_a of_o the_o subject_a for_o he_o be_v the_o minister_n of_o god_n to_o thou_o for_o good_a and_o common_a sense_n will_v tell_v we_o that_o submission_n to_o the_o worst_a prince_n be_v much_o more_o the_o interest_n of_o the_o subject_a than_o rebellion_n against_o they_o so_o that_o how_o much_o harm_n soever_o a_o tyrannical_a prince_n may_v bring_v upon_o a_o commonwealth_n he_o do_v it_o more_o good_a though_o it_o be_v only_o by_o be_v a_o bar_n against_o the_o misery_n of_o war_n and_o confusion_n and_o common_a experience_n will_v confirm_v the_o wisdom_n of_o st._n paul_n argument_n that_o be_v the_o governor_n the_o worst_a that_o can_v be_v and_o so_o they_o be_v at_o that_o time_n yet_o their_o government_n in_o spite_n of_o their_o own_o folly_n and_o wickedness_n be_v high_o beneficial_a to_o the_o commonwealth_n and_o in_o that_o every_o private_a man_n interest_n and_o property_n be_v comprehend_v now_o from_o both_o these_o premise_n the_o conclusion_n be_v unavoidable_a wherefore_o you_o must_v needs_o be_v subject_a not_o only_o for_o wrath_n but_o for_o conscience_n sake_n that_o be_v not_o only_o for_o fear_n of_o the_o king_n and_o his_o law_n but_o out_o of_o sense_n of_o duty_n to_o that_o god_n by_o who_o authority_n king_n reign_n and_o who_o have_v bind_v upon_o our_o conscience_n the_o duty_n of_o subjection_n to_o they_o now_o one_o will_v think_v it_o impossible_a for_o man_n to_o escape_v from_o the_o obligation_n of_o so_o clear_a a_o law_n and_o so_o it_o be_v till_o they_o lie_v aside_o the_o natural_a sense_n and_o ingenuity_n of_o mankind_n and_o then_o indeed_o man_n conscience_n be_v arm_v against_o all_o conviction_n and_o so_o it_o happen_v among_o we_o that_o as_o once_o much_o learning_n make_v this_o great_a apostle_n mad_a so_o now_o much_o reliligion_n make_v he_o a_o fool._n for_o so_o we_o be_v tell_v that_o we_o must_v not_o think_v that_o he_o will_v be_v so_o silly_a as_o to_o abett_v the_o wickedness_n of_o tyrant_n non_fw-la ut_fw-la neronem_fw-la aut_fw-la tyrannum_fw-la quemvis_fw-la alium_fw-la supra_fw-la omnem_fw-la legem_fw-la &_o paenam_fw-la constituendo_fw-la punishment_n and_o establish_v the_o cruel_a dominion_n of_o one_o above_o all_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v distinguish_v between_o the_o king_n person_n as_o a_o man_n in_o concreto_fw-la to_o express_v it_o in_o mr._n rutherford_n word_n though_o it_o 29._o be_v the_o sense_n of_o all_o the_o monarchomachist_n and_o as_o a_o king_n and_o his_o office_n in_o abstracto_fw-la the_o person_n may_v be_v resist_v though_o not_o the_o office_n because_o if_o the_o person_n govern_v not_o by_o law_n and_o justice_n he_o cease_v to_o be_v a_o lawful_a power_n but_o to_o what_o purpose_n be_v it_o for_o god_n to_o make_v law_n if_o man_n may_v evacuate_v their_o force_n by_o such_o metaphysical_a nothing_o for_o how_o can_v we_o submit_v to_o the_o office_n of_o a_o king_n but_o by_o submit_v to_o the_o king_n himself_o if_o the_o office_n itself_o can_v govern_v without_o he_o than_o it_o may_v be_v the_o safe_a way_n to_o stick_v to_o the_o abstract_n but_o see_v it_o can_v subsist_v without_o the_o concrete_a he_o that_o command_v to_o submit_v to_o the_o office_n command_v we_o to_o submit_v to_o the_o man_n in_o who_o it_o be_v or_o he_o command_v we_o nothing_o so_o that_o this_o be_v real_o no_o better_o then_o profane_a trifle_a with_o the_o word_n of_o god_n when_o we_o be_v in_o plain_a and_o express_v term_n command_v to_o make_v no_o resistance_n to_o our_o governor_n to_o get_v loose_a from_o so_o useful_a a_o law_n by_o such_o childish_a and_o senseless_a trifle_n as_o plain_o contradict_v the_o law_n itself_o for_o whereas_o the_o only_a design_n of_o such_o law_n be_v to_o preserve_v the_o peace_n of_o humane_a society_n by_o such_o evasion_n as_o these_o all_o man_n be_v leave_v at_o liberty_n to_o disturb_v it_o as_o they_o please_v notwithstanding_o all_o the_o law_n in_o the_o world_n that_o ever_o be_v or_o ever_o can_v be_v make_v against_o it_o and_o therefore_o i_o will_v advise_v these_o man_n that_o can_v cheat_v and_o lullaby_n their_o own_o conscience_n with_o such_o rattle_v as_o these_o either_o to_o lay_v aside_o their_o metaphysic_n or_o their_o religion_n because_o such_o niceness_n and_o subtlety_n make_v it_o a_o thing_n of_o no_o use_n in_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o world_n for_o if_o there_o be_v no_o such_o law_n at_o all_o man_n will_v be_v under_o no_o great_a restraint_n from_o the_o sin_n than_o they_o be_v now_o by_o the_o most_o effectual_a law_n that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o god_n himself_o to_o lay_v upon_o they_o man_n that_o can_v use_v such_o abusive_a and_o prevaricate_a shift_n to_o escape_v their_o plain_a duty_n be_v arrive_v either_o to_o too_o great_a profaneness_n or_o too_o high_a enthusiasm_n to_o be_v admit_v to_o the_o right_n of_o common_a christianity_n they_o serve_v their_o saviour_n just_a as_o they_o do_v their_o prince_n they_o obey_v he_o in_o abstracto_fw-la and_o rebel_n against_o he_o in_o concreto_fw-la they_o submit_v to_o his_o law_n when_o themselves_o think_v it_o convenient_a but_o when_o they_o do_v not_o they_o then_o cease_v to_o be_v his_o law_n this_o be_v the_o unavoidable_a result_n of_o these_o thin_a and_o precarious_a distinction_n that_o religion_n if_o man_n will_v shall_v be_v of_o no_o use_n or_o force_v in_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o world_n but_o second_o this_o be_v downright_a child_n play_n and_o make_v all_o law_n whatsoever_o ridiculous_a when_o it_o leave_v it_o to_o those_o who_o be_v command_v absolute_a submission_n to_o judge_v when_o submission_n be_v sit_v and_o when_o not_o do_v but_o once_o allow_v that_o liberty_n and_o after_o that_o all_o the_o law_n enjoin_v this_o duty_n can_v never_o command_v any_o thing_n for_o after_o they_o have_v command_v all_o that_o can_v be_v command_v every_o man_n will_v be_v as_o much_o at_o liberty_n to_o do_v what_o he_o please_v as_o he_o be_v be●ore_o be_v sole_a judge_n of_o the_o fitness_n of_o his_o subjection_n but_o if_o he_o be_v judge_n of_o that_o he_o be_v not_o bind_v and_o if_o he_o be_v bind_v he_o be_v not_o judge_n but_o be_v absolute_o bind_v in_o our_o present_a case_n what_o can_v the_o apostle_n command_v signify_v when_o he_o peremptory_o and_o indefinite_o require_v subjection_n to_o the_o high_a power_n i._o e._n say_v these_o statesman_n to_o all_o power_n that_o govern_v by_o law_n and_o none_o else_o this_o make_v the_o subject_n the_o supreme_a judge_n of_o the_o government_n not_o the_o governor_n themselves_o for_o by_o it_o whatever_o these_o do_v or_o command_v it_o be_v of_o no_o authority_n then_o as_o the_o subject_n judge_v it_o legal_a and_o if_o they_o do_v not_o they_o be_v at_o liberty_n to_o resist_v and_o rebel_n and_o if_o this_o be_v so_o st._n paul_n will_v deserve_v to_o be_v laugh_v at_o for_o be_v so_o serious_a in_o enforce_v a_o law_n that_o can_v never_o bind_v whilst_o he_o command_v subjection_n or_o nonresistance_n to_o high_a power_n when_o the_o subject_n after_o that_o have_v full_a power_n in_o themselves_o to_o determine_v to_o what_o high_a power_n they_o will_v or_o will_v not_o resist_v such_o nonsense_n lie_v at_o the_o bottom_n of_o all_o rebellion_n for_o if_o man_n be_v at_o all_o bind_v to_o submit_v to_o their_o governor_n they_o be_v bind_v to_o submit_v to_o all_o if_o not_o to_o all_o than_o not_o to_o any_o because_o the_o power_n of_o resistance_n be_v by_o this_o poor_a republican_n principle_n at_o last_o whole_o leave_v to_o their_o own_o judgement_n and_o then_o they_o be_v subject_a to_o no_o authority_n but_o themselves_o and_o their_o own_o wi_n but_o three_o if_o a_o king_n cease_v to_o be_v the_o high_a power_n or_o to_o be_v a_o lawful_a king_n whenever_o he_o do_v not_o act_v according_a to_o law_n or_o whenever_o his_o subject_n shall_v apprehend_v so_o how_o be_v it_o possible_a there_o shall_v be_v any_o settle_a government_n or_o society_n among_o mankind_n when_o it_o be_v so_o plain_o impossible_a but_o that_o there_o must_v be_v miscarriage_n as_o long_o as_o king_n be_v man_n and_o much_o more_o misapprehension_n of_o the_o government_n as_o long_o as_o the_o people_n
take_v into_o protection_n by_o the_o first_o christian_a emperor_n know_v how_o much_o it_o will_v endear_v the_o church_n of_o england_n to_o your_o majesty_n royal_a care_n and_o kindness_n when_o you_o discern_v its_o exact_a conformity_n to_o the_o first_o constitution_n in_o all_o thing_n but_o its_o suffer_v and_o now_o i_o can_v pray_v for_o more_o happiness_n to_o your_o sacred_a to_o all_o nation_n and_o require_v all_o man_n obedience_n to_o they_o under_o the_o sanction_n of_o the_o great_a reward_n and_o penalty_n and_o if_o mr._n hobbs_n can_v affirm_v that_o exact_v obedience_n upon_o such_o term_n be_v no_o piece_n of_o authority_n it_o be_v in_o vain_a either_o to_o reason_n with_o himself_o or_o any_o other_o man_n of_o his_o kidney_n or_o understanding_n but_o he_o prove_v it_o to_o be_v so_o because_o the_o apostle_n be_v preacher_n and_o preacher_n be_v crier_n and_o crier_n have_v no_o right_a to_o command_v among_o the_o many_o bad_a quality_n in_o this_o author_n way_n of_o writing_n his_o contempt_n of_o other_o man_n understanding_n be_v none_o of_o the_o least_o for_o if_o he_o have_v not_o a_o very_a low_a opinion_n of_o their_o intellectual_a ability_n he_o can_v never_o have_v presume_v to_o impose_v upon_o they_o by_o such_o childish_a pretence_n and_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o be_v he_o talk_v not_o as_o if_o he_o discourse_v to_o man_n but_o to_o magpie_n parrot_n and_o jackdaw_n that_o be_v to_o learn_v to_o chatter_v his_o dictate_v by_o rote_n for_o be_v it_o not_o a_o strange_a grossness_n of_o confidence_n that_o when_o our_o bless_a saviour_n come_v from_o god_n to_o publish_v a_o new_a law_n to_o the_o world_n and_o enforce_v it_o with_o the_o severe_a penalty_n and_o when_o he_o give_v the_o same_o commission_n to_o his_o apostle_n that_o himself_o have_v receive_v from_o his_o father_n to_o publish_v this_o law_n to_o the_o world_n though_o they_o do_v it_o with_o all_o this_o authority_n to_o infer_v that_o they_o do_v it_o with_o none_o at_o all_o because_o when_o they_o declare_v their_o message_n they_o open_v their_o mouth_n as_o crier_n do_v when_o they_o make_v proclamation_n and_o so_o the_o original_a word_n signify_v any_o kind_n of_o public_a declaration_n and_o what_o if_o it_o be_v the_o proper_a term_n for_o the_o crier_n office_n it_o may_v for_o all_o that_o in_o common_a speech_n be_v apply_v to_o any_o other_o way_n of_o publication_n it_o will_v be_v hard_a to_o find_v out_o any_o one_o word_n in_o the_o world_n so_o severe_o stint_v to_o its_o original_a import_n however_o every_o schoolboy_n can_v have_v inform_v the_o old_a philosopher_n that_o this_o word_n be_v not_o so_o confine_v and_o that_o it_o be_v not_o be_v evident_a from_o the_o very_a passage_n itself_o because_o the_o apostle_n that_o be_v say_v to_o proclaim_v or_o cry_v the_o gospel_n to_o all_o nation_n do_v not_o make_v a_o simple_a proclamation_n but_o require_v obedience_n to_o what_o they_o publish_v under_o the_o most_o forcible_a obligation_n of_o reward_n and_o punishment_n and_o such_o proclamation_n as_o that_o whatever_o the_o term_n proclaim_v may_v signify_v in_o its_o naked_a sense_n bring_v with_o it_o as_o much_o authority_n as_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o government_n to_o put_v in_o practice_n but_o he_o far_o affirm_v in_o proof_n of_o no_o authority_n in_o the_o church_n that_o the_o apostle_n and_o other_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v our_o schoolmaster_n and_o not_o our_o commander_n but_o beside_o that_o this_o be_v a_o arbitrary_a assertion_n of_o his_o own_o devise_v to_o assign_v they_o the_o office_n of_o schoolmaster_n for_o the_o scripture_n no_o where_o do_v so_o the_o authority_n of_o a_o schoolmaster_n be_v some_o authority_n for_o though_o he_o have_v not_o the_o power_n of_o the_o sword_n he_o have_v that_o of_o the_o rod_n and_o that_o be_v as_o effectual_a for_o his_o purpose_n among_o boy_n as_o the_o other_o among_o men._n so_o that_o there_o be_v no_o logic_n in_o the_o argument_n neither_o can_v i_o believe_v so_o witty_a a_o man_n to_o have_v be_v so_o weak_a as_o to_o have_v bring_v it_o for_o that_o purpose_n but_o rather_o because_o he_o think_v the_o comparison_n be_v a_o witty_a slur_n upon_o christianity_n as_o if_o it_o be_v as_o childish_a and_o contemptible_a a_o office_n to_o instruct_v man_n in_o it_o as_o it_o be_v to_o teach_v boy_n and_o child_n their_o element_n of_o speech_n that_o be_v a_o shrewd_a hint_n though_o the_o next_o comparison_n be_v much_o more_o poignant_a that_o our_o saviour_n compare_v preach_v to_o fish_n i._n e._n to_o win_v man_n to_o obedience_n not_o by_o coercion_n and_o punish_v but_o by_o persuasion_n and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n call_v not_o apostle_n hunter_n of_o man_n but_o fisher_n of_o men._n now_o though_o his_o endeavour_n to_o prove_v that_o there_o be_v no_o authority_n in_o the_o officer_n of_o the_o church_n because_o they_o have_v no_o civil_a authority_n be_v altogether_o vain_a and_o trifle_a because_o he_o only_o presume_v what_o no_o man_n will_v grant_v he_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o authority_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o here_o his_o way_n of_o demonstration_n be_v somewhat_o more_o than_o usual_o pleasant_a viz._n that_o they_o be_v endue_v with_o no_o power_n of_o coercion_n because_o our_o saviour_n have_v constitute_v they_o not_o his_o huntsman_n but_o his_o fisherman_n where_o i_o think_v it_o will_v require_v the_o acuteness_n of_o mr._n hobbs_n wit_n to_o make_v it_o out_o why_o there_o be_v less_o coercion_n in_o fish_v then_o in_o hunt_v especial_o in_o net-fishing_a which_o be_v their_o former_a trade_n to_o which_o he_o know_v our_o saviour_n there_o allude_v when_o this_o mighty_a difficulty_n be_v clear_v up_o i_o may_v come_v to_o understand_v the_o force_n of_o the_o argument_n but_o till_o then_o i_o must_v confess_v it_o be_v above_o my_o reach_n but_o hitherto_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o notwithstanding_o all_o this_o gentleman_n be_v grammatical_a demonstration_n from_o crier_n schoolmaster_n and_o fisher_n that_o the_o commission_n grant_v to_o the_o apostle_n and_o their_o successor_n to_o preach_v the_o gospel_n do_v not_o only_o carry_v proper_a authority_n in_o it_o but_o the_o high_a sort_n of_o authority_n because_o enforce_v with_o the_o great_a reward_n and_o penalty_n and_o that_o every_o man_n know_v be_v the_o very_a life_n and_o soul_n of_o all_o power_n the_o next_o branch_n of_o their_o commission_n be_v to_o baptise_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o father_n the_o son_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o though_o the_o philosopher_n will_v here_o make_v himself_o merry_a not_o only_o with_o the_o sacrament_n but_o with_o the_o holy_a trinity_n in_o who_o name_n it_o be_v administer_v yet_o after_o all_o his_o pain_n to_o prove_v it_o no_o authority_n he_o fair_o confess_v that_o it_o be_v a_o authority_n either_o to_o baptise_v or_o refuse_v to_o baptise_v because_o baptism_n be_v the_o sacrament_n of_o allegiance_n of_o they_o that_o be_v to_o be_v receive_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n but_o certain_o if_o they_o have_v power_n to_o grant_v or_o deny_v they_o this_o sacrament_n i._n e._n to_o receive_v they_o into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n or_o shut_v they_o out_o of_o it_o if_o there_o be_v any_o such_o thing_n as_o power_n in_o the_o world_n there_o can_v be_v a_o great_a than_o this_o and_o consequent_a to_o this_o authority_n he_o say_v be_v the_o remission_n and_o retention_n of_o sin_n or_o the_o power_n of_o loose_v and_o bind_v and_o for_o this_o i_o must_v confess_v he_o give_v a_o pertinent_a reason_n for_o so_o he_o be_v
of_o enquiry_n which_o though_o a_o fault_n be_v by_o no_o mean_n so_o disingenuous_a as_o act_v against_o knowledge_n but_o as_o for_o this_o case_n of_o apostate_n in_o time_n of_o persecution_n upon_o who_o mr._n hobbs_n say_v excommunication_n can_v have_v no_o effect_n of_o terror_n if_o indeed_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n have_v not_o give_v they_o sufficient_a evidence_n of_o their_o faith_n i_o will_v grant_v it_o to_o be_v true_a not_o only_o of_o that_o but_o of_o all_o the_o other_o threaten_n of_o the_o gospel_n but_o if_o god_n have_v give_v sufficient_a motive_n of_o belief_n as_o if_o the_o gospel_n be_v not_o a_o cheat_n he_o have_v if_o it_o be_v all_o mr._n hobbs_n dispute_n be_v without_o bottom_n a_o man_n apostasy_n be_v no_o fence_n against_o the_o reflection_n of_o his_o own_o conscience_n for_o though_o it_o be_v in_o his_o power_n to_o deny_v his_o faith_n for_o fear_n of_o persecution_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o in_o his_o power_n to_o disbelieve_v it_o so_o that_o upon_o such_o a_o man_n the_o sentence_n of_o excommunication_n by_o which_o he_o be_v cast_v out_o of_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n light_n with_o as_o much_o terror_n as_o upon_o any_o other_o believer_n and_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o evident_a in_o the_o history_n of_o the_o primitive_a church_n than_o the_o efficacy_n of_o this_o sentence_n upon_o such_o offender_n for_o the_o great_a part_n of_o those_o that_o fall_v in_o time_n of_o persecution_n be_v by_o this_o mean_n alone_o recover_v to_o the_o church_n bring_v to_o sue_v for_o pardon_n and_o undergo_v very_o severe_a penance_n as_o a_o satisfaction_n for_o the_o scandal_n but_o to_o what_o purpose_n do_v i_o put_v myself_o to_o the_o trouble_n to_o prove_v these_o thing_n when_o all_o mr._n hobbs_n discourse_n upon_o this_o argument_n run_v upon_o this_o supposition_n as_o if_o christianity_n be_v but_o a_o trivial_a and_o indifferent_a thing_n that_o may_v or_o may_v not_o be_v believe_v as_o man_n various_o fancy_v or_o be_v casual_o incline_v and_o upon_o that_o supposition_n i_o will_v free_o grant_v it_o to_o be_v of_o as_o little_a effect_n as_o he_o will_v have_v it_o but_o if_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n have_v give_v we_o such_o a_o demonstrative_a evidence_n of_o the_o divine_a authority_n of_o this_o religion_n that_o no_o man_n who_o inquire_v into_o it_o can_v wink_v against_o its_o light_n without_o do_v violence_n to_o his_o own_o conviction_n then_o whether_o man_n will_v or_o no_o it_o will_v be_v a_o perpetual_a terror_n to_o their_o conscience_n and_o that_o this_o slight_a opinion_n of_o the_o evidence_n of_o christianity_n though_o upon_o what_o slight_n and_o indeed_o ignorant_a pretence_n i_o have_v elsewhere_o show_v be_v the_o bottom_n of_o mr._n hobbs_n meaning_n be_v too_o manifest_a from_o his_o next_o branch_n of_o the_o supremacy_n of_o sovereign_a power_n which_o indeed_o be_v neither_o better_a nor_o worse_o than_o bare-faced_n blasphemy_n and_o that_o be_v the_o power_n of_o make_v scripture_n law_n i._n e._n obligatory_a but_o if_o that_o be_v the_o state_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n that_o it_o be_v of_o ecclesiastical_a supremacy_n of_o make_v scripture_n law_n that_o they_o give_v to_o king_n they_o take_v away_o from_o god_n himself_o after_o all_o this_o rank_a profaneness_n it_o be_v almost_o needless_a to_o consider_v his_o last_o branch_n of_o ecclesiastical_a power_n viz._n the_o right_n of_o ordain_v and_o constitute_v ecclesiastical_a officer_n not_o only_o because_o it_o but_o most_o of_o all_o because_o he_o have_v confess_v and_o no_o man_n can_v deny_v it_o the_o whole_a truth_n of_o the_o matter_n both_o against_o the_o hobbist_n and_o the_o independent_a too_o viz._n that_o the_o apostle_n convey_v their_o authority_n to_o their_o successor_n who_o themselves_z depute_a and_o ordain_v by_o imposition_n of_o hand_n and_o if_o so_o this_o power_n of_o stand_v before_o the_o conversion_n of_o king_n and_o man_n endue_v with_o sovereign_a civil_a power_n and_o after_o his_o rate_n of_o demonstration_n prove_v it_o to_o be_v no_o power_n at_o all_o whilst_o vest_v in_o the_o pastor_n of_o the_o church_n he_o come_v now_o to_o prove_v that_o it_o be_v lodge_v in_o civil_a sovereign_n upon_o their_o conversion_n to_o the_o christian_a faith_n and_o that_o when_o it_o come_v to_o they_o it_o become_v true_a and_o proper_a power_n but_o before_o i_o consider_v his_o small_a argument_n i_o can_v understand_v why_o that_o which_o be_v no_o power_n before_o become_v power_n now_o there_o can_v be_v but_o one_o reason_n for_o it_o and_o that_o be_v too_o obvious_a in_o all_o mr._n hobbs_n write_n viz._n because_o it_o be_v now_o abet_v if_o speak_v out_o be_v this_o that_o there_o be_v no_o penalty_n at_o all_o but_o in_o this_o life_n and_o then_o i_o must_v confess_v that_o the_o power_n of_o the_o church_n can_v be_v no_o power_n till_o complicate_v with_o the_o civil_a power_n but_o the_o man_n that_o discourse_n upon_o such_o principle_n as_o these_o have_v nothing_o to_o do_v with_o the_o christian_a religion_n or_o any_o thing_n relate_v to_o it_o but_o second_o which_o way_n come_v this_o power_n into_o civil_a sovereign_n our_o saviour_n leave_v it_o to_o his_o apostle_n and_o they_o deliver_v it_o down_o by_o imposition_n of_o hand_n to_o other_o who_o be_v to_o convey_v it_o in_o the_o same_o manner_n of_o succession_n through_o all_o age_n how_o then_o come_v civil_a sovereign_n by_o it_o if_o any_o be_v
