A66602 The vanity and falsity of the history of passive obedience detected Wherein is briefly demonstrated, that the first reformers were far from maintaining it in the author of that history and his party's sence. As also it is plainly evinced that it cannot be deduced from the homilies, articles, injunctions or canons, liturgy and bishops of the primitive English Church. And all the specious pretences he makes for it are fully answered. By Tim. Wilson, M.A. and rector of the Kings Noth in Kent. Licens'd according to order. Wilson, Timothy, 1642-1705. 1690 (1690) Wing W2952; ESTC R217174 15,141 14

england_n as_o any_o man_n in_o england_n and_o i_o always_o be_v and_o be_o at_o this_o day_n for_o monarchy_n epscopacy_n and_o liturgy_n as_o establish_v by_o law_n and_o i_o humble_o submit_v in_o all_o thing_n of_o order_n decency_n and_o government_n to_o the_o father_n of_o the_o church_n and_o to_o the_o king_n and_o parliament_n and_o let_v man_n sink_v in_o prejudice_n say_v what_o they_o will_v this_o be_v always_o the_o judgement_n of_o the_o protestant_a english_a church_n if_o our_o governor_n think_v fit_a to_o change_v thing_n in_o their_o own_o nature_n changeable_a every_o subject_a be_v bind_v in_o conscience_n to_o obey_v if_o they_o think_v not_o fit_a be_v thing_n as_o they_o be_v i_o be_o content_v now_o as_o for_o the_o canon_n of_o the_o year_n 1640_o i_o confess_v they_o have_v a_o spice_n of_o innovation_n and_o i_o say_v i_o hope_v without_o offence_n to_o any_o impartial_a considerer_n of_o those_o day_n that_o arbitrary_a power_n begin_v to_o creep_v upon_o we_o and_o archbishop_n laud_n and_o his_o party_n nor_o the_o puritan_n and_o their_o party_n be_v not_o to_o be_v justify_v in_o all_o thing_n and_o here_o i_o make_v my_o appeal_n to_o rushworth_n collection_n or_o any_o other_o impartial_a record_n of_o those_o time_n but_o i_o think_v the_o author_n have_v better_o have_v bury_v these_o thing_n in_o silence_n for_o how_o they_o tend_v to_o the_o credit_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n i_o do_v not_o understand_v and_o i_o need_v not_o descant_v upon_o they_o let_v we_o go_v on_o to_o chap._n iii_o which_o contain_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o homily_n here_o i_o shall_v not_o say_v with_o mr._n montague_n appeal_n p._n 260._o i_o will_v admit_v the_o
homily_n as_o contain_v certain_a godly_a and_o wholesome_a exhortation_n but_o not_o as_o public_a dogmatical_a resolution_n confirm_v of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n they_o have_v not_o dogmatical_a position_n or_o doctrine_n to_o be_v propugn_v and_o subscribe_v in_o all_o and_o every_o point_n they_o may_v seem_v to_o speak_v somewhat_o too_o hard_o and_o stretch_v some_o say_n beyond_o the_o use_n and_o practice_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n but_o with_o this_o author_n i_o will_v account_v they_o admirable_a sermon_n make_v by_o our_o first_o reformer_n as_o the_o body_n of_o practical_a divinity_n and_o the_o confutation_n of_o the_o error_n and_o idolatry_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n etc._n etc._n and_o by_o the_o way_n i_o be_o glad_a that_o the_o homily_n be_v allow_v to_o confute_v the_o idolatry_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n because_o not_o long_o since_o divers_a for_o passive_a obedience_n and_o nonresistance_n deny_v that_o there_o be_v any_o idolatry_n in_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n to_o the_o great_a scandal_n of_o our_o mother_n the_o church_n of_o england_n this_o premise_a i_o affirm_v that_o if_o man_n thought_n may_v be_v know_v by_o their_o word_n dr._n welw_n letter_n to_o mr._n march_n p._n 10._o may_v well_o say_v that_o passive_a obedience_n in_o the_o narrow_a sense_n we_o take_v it_o in_o be_v not_o so_o much_o as_o think_v on_o at_o the_o time_n of_o publish_v the_o homily_n first_o because_o the_o word_n passive_a obedience_n be_v not_o in_o the_o homily_n second_o because_o they_o do_v not_o state_n our_o case_n which_o be_v this_o if_o a_o king_n be_v resolve_v to_o destroy_v the_o religion_n by_o law_n establish_v and_o liberty_n and_o property_n and_o will_v rule_v by_o the_o sword_n contrary_a to_o the_o fundamental_a law_n of_o the_o kingdom_n whether_o in_o this_o case_n defensive_a arm_n be_v not_o lawful_a now_o we_o say_v the_o compiler_n of_o the_o homily_n never_o condemn_v this_o neither_o be_v the_o word_n defensive_a arm_n be_v unlawful_a in_o the_o homily_n three_o because_o in_o those_o day_n the_o write_n of_o many_o divine_n of_o the_o foreign_a reform_a church_n in_o which_o defensive_a arm_n be_v justify_v be_v approve_v and_o public_o print_v and_o own_a by_o the_o university_n or_o at_o least_o not_o public_o censure_v as_o calvin_n institution_n all_o luther_n work_n and_o the_o write_n of_o peter_n martyr_n etc._n etc._n and_o we_o say_v that_o in_o popular_a sermon_n fit_v to_o the_o capacity_n of_o the_o common_a people_n many_o zealous_a and_o hyperbolical_a expression_n may_v be_v allow_v and_o favourable_o interpret_v especial_o against_o those_o horrid_a crime_n of_o sedition_n and_o rebellion_n which_o yet_o will_v scarce_o pass_v in_o dogmatical_a decision_n for_o these_o latter_a require_v dry_a reason_n and_o plain_a scripture_n without_o rhetorication_n or_o metaphorical_a expression_n allusion_n or_o illustration_n i_o will_v put_v a_o case_n suppose_v the_o late_a king_n shall_v have_v send_v three_o or_o four_o officer_n of_o his_o stand_a army_n to_o a_o nobleman_n house_n with_o a_o commission_n or_o command_n to_o cut_v the_o throat_n of_o his_o child_n wife_n and_o his_o own_o and_o these_o officer_n shall_v have_v such_o wicked_a heart_n as_o to_o endeavour_v to_o accomplish_v this_o villainy_n if_o in_o this_o case_n the_o nobleman_n may_v defend_v himself_o by_o force_n of_o arm_n against_o these_o cutthroat_n and_o call_v in_o his_o neighbour_n to_o help_v he_o then_o those_o phrase_n in_o the_o homily_n in_o no_o case_n to_o resist_v in_o any_o case_n it_o be_v not_o lawful_a we_o may_v not_o in_o any_o wise_a withstand_v violent_o etc._n etc._n must_v admit_v of_o the_o sense_n that_o i_o put_v upon_o they_o and_o most_o assure_o those_o bless_a author_n of_o reformation_n abhor_v such_o brutish_a tyranny_n and_o if_o this_o author_n will_v not_o recant_v this_o disinal_a doctrine_n in_o the_o vast_a extent_n thereof_o he_o must_v be_v in_o a_o deep_a melancholy_n and_o fit_a for_o dark_a room_n than_o to_o converse_v with_o humane_a society_n again_o i_o must_v confess_v that_o the_o most_o barbarous_a impudent_a and_o brazenfaced_a murder_n of_o our_o royal_a martyr_n king_n charles_n the_o first_o a_o prince_n of_o most_o excellent_a virtue_n and_o of_o ever_o bless_a memory_n can_v do_v no_o less_o than_o provoke_v every_o loyal_a subject_n in_o parliament_n to_o make_v a_o most_o severe_a and_o zealous_a declaration_n about_o take_v arm_n against_o the_o king_n but_o i_o believe_v in_o my_o conscience_n this_o declaration_n never_o intend_v to_o enslave_v we_o or_o never_o affirm_v that_o if_o the_o king_n will_v cut_v our_o throat_n we_o may_v not_o defend_v ourselves_o by_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n so_o that_o my_o interpretation_n must_v take_v place_n that_o the_o phrase_n be_v not_o mean_v absolute_o in_o the_o utmost_a extremity_n for_o this_o will_v be_v to_o suppose_v that_o the_o people_n of_o england_n have_v choose_v for_o their_o representative_n in_o parliament_n man_n resolve_v to_o make_v they_o slave_n and_o not_o to_o preserve_v liberty_n and_o property_n this_o with_o the_o distinction_n before_o use_v be_v a_o sufficient_a answer_n to_o any_o man_n who_o have_v no_o mind_n to_o be_v obstinate_a and_o cavil_v but_o contend_v for_o truth_n not_o for_o victory_n not_o to_o say_v that_o bishop_n jew_n and_o without_o pretence_n of_o contradiction_n dr._n bilson_n acknowledge_v defensive_a arm_n lawful_a in_o some_o case_n in_o those_o very_a day_n and_o when_o he_o purposely_o handle_v the_o subject_a or_o controversy_n observe_v also_o the_o time_n when_o the_o homily_n be_v make_v they_o be_v compose_v in_o the_o happy_a reign_n of_o edward_n vi_o and_o queen_n elizabeth_n in_o who_o day_n there_o be_v no_o fear_n of_o popery_n or_o arbitrary_a power_n on_o their_o part_n though_o some_o besort_a priest_n and_o people_n that_o hate_v to_o be_v reform_v may_v rebel_v against_o moses_n and_o aaron_n and_o desire_v to_o return_v back_o into_o egyptian_a bondage_n and_o slavery_n and_o the_o homily_n be_v make_v chief_o to_o persuade_v such_o to_o peace_n and_o obedience_n to_o their_o lawful_a superior_n who_o god_n have_v set_v over_o they_o and_o to_o show_v they_o the_o heinousness_n of_o rebel_a against_o they_o and_o may_v now_o with_o much_o profit_n be_v read_v to_o persuade_v all_o good_a christian_a people_n of_o england_n to_o honour_n reverence_n and_o obey_v king_n william_n and_o queen_n mary_n who_o god_n most_o gracious_a providence_n have_v place_v on_o the_o throne_n i_o descend_v to_o chapter_n iu._n which_o contain_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o liturgy_n though_o i_o do_v not_o equal_v the_o liturgy_n with_o the_o word_n of_o god_n nor_o take_v it_o to_o be_v absolute_o unalterable_a nor_o do_v the_o church_n yet_o i_o be_o of_o this_o author_n mind_n that_o it_o be_v the_o most_o excellent_a body_n of_o public_a prayer_n that_o the_o world_n own_v or_o as_o i_o have_v elsewhere_o express_v myself_o it_o i_o shall_v say_v that_o there_o be_v no_o church_n on_o earth_n which_o worship_n god_n and_o christ_n with_o great_a purity_n majesty_n reverence_n and_o expression_n of_o devotion_n than_o the_o english_a protestant_n no_o man_n can_v confute_v i_o particular_o no_o church_n in_o the_o world_n pray_v more_o zealous_o for_o king_n and_o governor_n and_o what_o this_o author_n produce_v out_o of_o the_o liturgy_n be_v never_o authority_n may_v faithful_o serve_v honour_n and_o humble_o obey_v they_o according_a to_o god_n bless_a word_n and_o ordinance_n and_o we_o pray_v god_n that_o the_o king_n may_v cut_v off_o all_o such_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n as_o turn_v religion_n into_o rebellion_n and_o faith_n into_o faction_n and_o we_o beseech_v god_n to_o accept_v of_o our_o unfeigned_a oblation_n of_o ourselves_o vow_v all_o holy_a obedience_n in_o thought_n word_n and_o work_v unto_o the_o divine_a majesty_n and_o promise_v in_o he_o and_o for_o he_o all_o dutiful_a allegiance_n to_o his_o anoint_v servant_n and_o to_o their_o heir_n for_o ever_o but_o what_o be_v all_o this_o to_o passive_a obedience_n this_o author_n can_v be_v so_o ignorant_a as_o not_o to_o know_v that_o all_o learned_a divine_n of_o what_o persuasion_n soever_o own_o this_o insomuch_o that_o i_o must_v needs_o say_v that_o as_o great_o as_o he_o pretend_v to_o the_o meekness_n and_o peaceableness_n of_o a_o christian_a spirit_n he_o have_v foul_o transgress_v the_o rule_n
