their_o father_n which_o they_o be_v oblige_v to_o obey_v after_o their_o settle_a possession_n of_o the_o land_n of_o canaan_n first_o that_o they_o shall_v have_v a_o king_n over_o they_o second_o that_o they_o shall_v destroy_v amalek_n three_o that_o they_o shall_v build_v a_o temple_n of_o which_o three_o the_o first_o be_v concern_v the_o set_n up_o a_o king_n because_o the_o other_o two_o be_v to_o be_v perform_v by_o he_o it_o seem_v god_n be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v a_o enemy_n to_o king_n that_o he_o design_v a_o perfect_a regal_a government_n for_o his_o own_o people_n as_o soon_o as_o they_o shall_v be_v well_o settle_v in_o the_o promise_v land_n they_o be_v then_o to_o have_v a_o king_n a_o king_n not_o in_o any_o wise_a to_o be_v set_v up_o by_o the_o election_n of_o the_o people_n who_o have_v no_o power_n to_o govern_v themselves_o and_o can_v transfer_v none_o to_o another_o but_o a_o king_n of_o god_n own_o choose_n and_o a_o king_n like_o those_o of_o other_o nation_n with_o all_o the_o external_a magnificence_n of_o royal_a majesty_n for_o so_o samuel_n represent_v the_o manner_n of_o their_o king_n which_o though_o look_v upon_o by_o some_o learned_a man_n as_o a_o description_n of_o arbitrary_a tyranny_n be_v suppose_v by_o other_o to_o be_v only_o a_o account_n of_o what_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o due_a support_n of_o regal_a power_n according_a to_o the_o just_a grandeur_n and_o dignity_n thereof_o he_o tell_v they_o that_o their_o king_n shall_v take_v their_o son_n and_o appoint_v they_o for_o himself_o for_o his_o chariot_n and_o to_o be_v his_o horseman_n etc._n etc._n and_o to_o be_v captain_n over_o thousand_o and_o captain_n over_o fifty_n etc._n etc._n and_o take_v their_o daughter_n to_o be_v his_o confectionary_n and_o cook_n and_o take_v their_o field_n and_o vineyard_n and_o oliveyard_n that_o be_v to_o say_v the_o ten_o of_o they_o for_o so_o it_o be_v express_v in_o the_o follow_a word_n the_o ten_o of_o their_o seed_n and_o of_o their_o vineyard_n and_o the_o ten_o of_o their_o sheep_n etc._n etc._n all_o which_o seem_v to_o be_v absolute_o requisite_a to_o the_o royal_a state_n of_o a_o sovereign_a prince_n who_o can_v subsist_v without_o servant_n and_o officer_n of_o all_o sort_n both_o for_o his_o domestic_a affair_n and_o for_o the_o execution_n of_o his_o government_n nor_o maintain_v his_o servant_n without_o a_o sufficient_a revenue_n by_o public_a tax_n such_o as_o the_o ten_o of_o their_o field_n vineyard_n and_o flock_n which_o be_v the_o usual_a tribute_n pay_v to_o the_o eastern_a king_n and_o now_o it_o must_v be_v acknowledge_v that_o samuel_n do_v upon_o this_o account_n dissuade_v the_o israelite_n from_o desire_v a_o king_n because_o the_o necessary_a support_n and_o expense_n of_o royal_a power_n will_v seem_v oppressive_a and_o burdensome_a to_o they_o who_o have_v be_v hitherto_o free_a from_o such_o charge_n and_o exaction_n for_o while_o they_o be_v govern_v by_o their_o former_a monarch_n by_o the_o high_a priest_n or_o the_o judge_n the_o government_n be_v no_o charge_n at_o all_o to_o they_o the_o high_a priest_n have_v no_o other_o maintenance_n when_o he_o be_v supreme_a governor_n than_o when_o he_o be_v only_o high_a priest_n and_o the_o judge_n who_o god_n extraordinary_o raise_v up_o be_v secure_v and_o support_v in_o his_o government_n by_o the_o extraordinary_a presence_n of_o the_o divine_a power_n without_o the_o aid_n of_o man_n or_o money_n without_o any_o mass_n of_o treasure_n or_o numerous_a guard_n and_o train_n of_o servant_n but_o this_o be_v no_o disparagement_n at_o all_o to_o the_o ordinary_a kingly_a power_n resistance_n as_o if_o that_o be_v more_o expensive_a and_o burdensome_a than_o other_o form_n of_o humane_a government_n because_o it_o be_v like_a to_o be_v a_o new_a charge_n to_o a_o people_n who_o peculiar_a privilege_n it_o be_v to_o be_v free_a before_o from_o all_o such_o service_n and_o tribute_n the_o israelite_n than_o be_v at_o length_n by_o god_n own_o wise_a institution_n place_v under_o the_o conduct_n and_o dominion_n of_o complete_a and_o perfect_a king_n who_o have_v not_o only_o the_o power_n and_o office_n but_o also_o the_o very_a name_n and_o title_n with_o all_o the_o magnificent_a appendage_n of_o regal_a majesty_n the_o first_o of_o these_o king_n be_v saul_n of_o the_o tribe_n of_o benjamin_n who_o after_o god_n have_v choose_v and_o exalt_v he_o to_o that_o high_a dignity_n be_v receive_v as_o a_o great_a blessing_n from_o heaven_n with_o the_o most_o joyful_a acclamation_n of_o the_o people_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v think_v fit_a to_o leave_v it_o upon_o record_n that_o they_o be_v only_o the_o child_n of_o belial_n that_o say_v how_o shall_v this_o man_n save_o we_o and_o that_o such_o miscreant_n be_v the_o only_a man_n who_o despise_v he_o and_o bring_v he_o no_o present_n 1_o sam._n 10._o 24._o 27._o the_o people_n have_v desire_v a_o king_n that_o may_v go_v out_o before_o they_o and_o fight_v their_o battle_n which_o desire_n and_o expectation_n saul_n at_o first_o very_o well_o answer_v for_o when_o he_o take_v the_o kingdom_n over_o israel_n he_o fight_v against_o all_o their_o enemy_n on_o every_o side_n against_o moab_n ammon_n edom_n zobah_n and_o the_o philistine_n and_o whithersoever_o he_o turn_v himself_o he_o vex_v they_o and_o he_o gather_v a_o host_n and_o smite_v the_o amalekite_n and_o deliver_v israel_n out_o of_o the_o hand_n of_o they_o that_o hate_v they_o 1_o sam._n 14._o 47_o 48._o and_o although_o god_n be_v please_v to_o rend_v the_o kingdom_n from_o saul_n for_o spare_v some_o of_o amalek_n contrary_a to_o the_o divine_a command_n and_o for_o invade_v the_o priest_n office_n yet_o he_o be_v so_o far_o from_o abolish_n kingly_a power_n that_o he_o careful_o appoint_v a_o successor_n in_o it_o and_o send_v samuel_n to_o anoint_v he_o indeed_o it_o be_v ever_o his_o purpose_n to_o settle_v the_o kingdom_n in_o judah_n and_o therefore_o he_o take_v occasion_n from_o saul_n
