therefore will not be subject to Humane Government but resisteth True Authority resisteth a needful Ordinance of God and deserveth Punishment from God and Man 3. For rulers are not a terror to good works but to the evil wilt thou then not be afraid of the power Do that which is good and thou shalt have praise of the same 3. For as God is the Ordainer of Government in general so he hath specified their Office as to the universally necessary part and bound them as his Officers to see to the Execution of his Universal Laws as the King binds Justices to execute his Laws And therefore their Office and Authority received from God is not to be Persecutors or a Terror to Good Works but to punish the Evil For God giveth no Authority against himself or his Laws If therefore thou fear this Power given of God do that which is good and it will further thy Encouragement and Praise Even Heathens by seeing to the Execution of the Law of Nature will promote Natural Virtue and suppress and punish Vice 4. For he is the minister of God to thee for good But if thou do that which is evil be afraid for he beareth not the sword in vain For he is the minister of God a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doth evil 4. And let not bad Mens abuse of Government make thee think evil of the Office For they are but God's Servants or Officers not authorised to destroy and to do mischief but to do good even to see to the Execution of God's Laws by their own and to take care of the Common Welfare But if thou do evil fear them for God hath not entrusted them with the Sword in vain much less for mischief For they are God's Officers Revengers of Sin to execute God's Wrath and Man 's on Sinners And so to resist them is to resist the Officers of God and to honour and obey them is to honour and obey God that hath authorised them 5. Wherefore ye must needs be subject not only for wrath but also for conscience sake 5. Wherefore you ought to be subject even when you may not obey not onely for fear of Punishment from Man but in Conscience of your Duty to God who ordaineth them 6. For for this cause pay you tribute also for they are Gods ministers attending continually upon this very thing 6. Therefore honourable Maintenance and Tribute is their due For they are God's Servants whose very O●●●ce and daily Care and Labour is to do his Service for the Common Good 7. Render therefore to all their dues tribute to whom tribute is due custom to whom custom fear to whom fear honour to whom honour 7. I am not perswading you to own Usurpation or to give Men that which is not their due not yet do I determine among several Claimers which is the Supreme But that you give all their proper due Tribute Custom Fear and Honour to every one to whom they are due And let not Covetousness or Disobedience hinder you 8. Owe no man any thing but to love one another for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law 8. Discharge your Debts and give all Men the due which you owe them else you are unjust and rob them Only Love we shall still owe to one another and shall thus owe it even while we pay it And to pay this Debt of sincere Love is to fulfil all the Law to Man 9. For this Thou shalt not commit adultery Thou shalt not kill Thou shalt not steal Thou shalt not bear false witness Thou shalt not covet And if there be any other commandment it is briefly comprehended in this saying namely Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thy self 9. For all our Duty to Man is virtually comprehended in Loving them as our selves For a Man will not wrong the Life the Estate the Marriage right the Honour of himself nor falsely accuse or prosecute himself or covet from himself or those that he loveth as himself Bring Men once to this unfeigned Love and Hurtfulness Covetousness Fraud False Accusation Persecution and all Injustice will cease 10. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour therefore love is the fulfilling of the law 10. As we are not apt to hurt our selves so true Love would not hurt others in their Lives Liberties Estates or Good Names much less study to destroy them Therefore Love is the virtual fulfilling of all our Duty to them 11. And that knowing the time that now it is high time to awake out of sleep for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed 11. And we should increase in this careful discharge of our Duty of Love and Justice though in the State of Infidelity we lived in such Sins For by this time we should be better acquainted with our Duties and awaked to all conscionable performance of them we being neerer our Reward and Salvation than when we were first converted to the Faith and God expecteth now more from us 12. The night is far spent the day is at hand Let us therefore cast off the works of darkness let us put on the armour of light 12. We are now got further from our former State of Darkness We are now come to the Day-light of Illuminating Grace and under the Increase thereof The Church is growing to a more Honourable State by its Increase Let us therefore more resolvedly cast off all the Works of Heathenish Darkness and as Christ's Soldiers put on our Sacred Armour and use it as in the Day-light of Grace 13. Let us walk honestly as in the day not in rioting and drunkenness not in chambering and wantonness not in strife and envying 13. Seeing we are in the Light let us walk modestly and decently as becometh our Condition not as the Heathens in rioting and drunkenness not in lasciviousness and uncleanness and fleshly lusts not in proud selfish or covetous strife and envy 14. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ and make not provision for the flesh to fulfil lusts thereof 14. But let Christ his Spirit and Love his Doctrine and Example his Interest and Kingdom take you up and be to you as the Cloathing which you daily wear And do not as Carnal Men whose fleshly Pleasure and Prosperity is their choice and best that live to the said fleshly Pleasure and make provision to satisfie the Carnal Will and Lust in stead of preferring the Heavenly Treasure ANNOTATIONS Qu. Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot being of the number of the twelve 4. And he went his way and communed with the chief priests and captains how he might betray him unto them 3 4. Note There is more of Satan in sin than sinners think He hath access as a Tempter to the Imagination and when his Temptation prevaileth he gets greater possession of the heart 5. And they were glad and covenanted to give him money 5. Note 1. Wicked purposes or desires use to meet with encouragement from wicked men 2. It is a heinous crime when men dare covenant to sin for gain 6. And he promised and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude 6. To avoid tumult 7. Then came the day of unleavened bread when the passeover must be killed 8. And he sent Peter and John saying Go and prepare us the passeover that we may eat 9. And they said unto him Where wilt thou that we prepare 10. And he said unto them Behold when ye are entred into the city there shall a man meet you bearing a pitcher of water follow him into the house where he entreth in 11. And ye shall say unto the good man of the house The master saith unto thee Where is the guest-chamber where I shall eat the passeover with my disciples 12. And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished there make ready 13. And they went and found as he had said unto them and they made ready the passeover 7 8 9 10 11 12 13. Note 1. Christ knew what would befal them out of sight 2. Being made under the Law he would keep even that part that typified himself 14. And when the hour was come he sat down and the twelve apostles with him 15. And he said unto them With desire I have desired to eat this passeover with you before I suffer 14. Note Christ earnestly desired the fulfilling of his undertaken work and holy Communion with his Servants 16. For I say unto you I will not any more eat thereof until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God 17. And he took the cup and gave thanks and said Take this and divide it among your selves 18. For I say unto you I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God shall come 16 17 18. Till we meet in Heaven or till I celebrate that Sacrament which is the Christian Passover with you in the holy Assemblies where I will be spiritually present Qu. How comes the Cup twice mentioned Ans The first was part of the Passover But Beza noteth that the 18th and 19th verses are not in the Syrian Translation which is most ancient And in his very old Greek Copy now at Cambridge This do in remembrance of me is left out of the 19th verse and he conjectures some verses are transposed 19. And he took bread and gave thanks and brake it and gave unto them saying This is my body which is given for you this do in remembrance of me 20. Likewise also the cup after supper saying This cup is the new testament in my blood which is shed for you 19 20. See Matth. 26. Note Seeing the Evangelists use not all the very same words it seems not of absolute necessity to use just the same still Yet all the substance must be retained and it 's safest repeating all set together which they recite and as Paul most fully reciteth them 21. But behold the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table 22. And truly the Son of man goeth as it was determined but wo unto that man by whom he is betrayed 23. And they began to enquire among themselves which of them it was that should do this thing 21 22 23. Note How hard was Judas's heart that took not this warning 24. And there was also a strife among them which of them should be accounted the greatest 24. Note This strife was before Matth. 20. But Luke keepeth not to the order of time 25. And he said unto them The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors 26. But ye shall not be so but he that is greatest among you let him be as the younger and he that is chief as he that doth serve 25 26. I am not for parity among all my Disciples You know I have chosen you only to be Apostles But though you be over the Churches you must not be Rulers of one another And that sort of Preeminence which you have must not be like that of the Princes of the World who Rule by the Sword or outward Force and in worldly Pomp or State constraining Subjects to flatter them with high Titles but it must be grounded in an excellency of Grace and Gifts Love Meekness Humility being the most useful and devoted to the good of all as Ruling only the voluntary and therefore by the clearest Reason and greatest Love and most exemplary profitable Lives Strive and spare not for this Preeminence and Disparity 27. For whether is greater he that sitteth at meat or he that serveth Is not he that sitteth at meat but I am among you as he that serveth 27. Would you rule as greater than I what hath my Government of you been but to do you good by Doctrine Love and good Example without force 28. Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations 29. And I appoint unto you a kingdom as my Father hath appointed unto me 28. As a reward for your faithful sticking to me in all my Tryals and Sufferings I appoint c. Note This Promise is three ways expounded 1. The aspiring Clergy say it is I make you Apostles the Chief Rulers of my Church though in persecuting t●●es and y●ur Successors shall be Patriarchs Metropolitans Arch-Bishops c. and over top Emperours and Kings 2. Others say that this lower World is but a shadow of the upper and that the Office of Angels and the Titles in Daniel of M●●●● your Prince and so of other Angels sheweth thi●●e●e be Kingdoms in the Spiritual World above us answerable to all the Kingdoms on Earth and incomparably more and that therefore Christ saith In my Father's house are many Mansions And that there the twelve Apostles have their Kingdoms at least over the twelve Trib●● as being equal with the Angels 3. But most think that it is only an expression of the eminent Glory of the Apostles after the Resurrection I see not but part of all three Expositions may be included that is you shall be Chief in my Church on Earth and equal with Angels after Death but specially after the Day of Judgment 30. That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel 30. That ye may be feasted by me in Heaven with spiritual everlasting Joys and may be Superiors to the glorified Israelites and in the mean time on
but was loth to murder him judging him innocent Note Whereas other Writers of the Gospel oft tell us that Christ answered not a word and John tells us of his most pertinent Answers it only signifieth that to many other Questions not here mentioned he gave no Answer and that he forbore partly as seeing it was in vain with such unrighteous Men and being not over regardful of self defence and partly that he might not give them matter against him wrested from his own words But the answers omitted by others John reeiteth CHAP. XIX THen Pilate therefore took Jesus and scourged him 2. And the souldiers platted a crown of thorns and put it on his head and they put on him a purple robe 3. And said Hail king of the Jews and they smote him with their hands 1 2. Note When the unjust Ruler had once led the way by Scurging him all the Rabble and Soldiers make great Sport in deriding and abusing him such are the frolicks of wicked ignorance 4. Pilate therefore went forth again and saith unto them Behold I bring him forth to you that ye may know that I find no fault in him 5. Then came Jesus forth wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe And Pilate saith unto them Behold the man 4. In Scorn 6. When the cheif priests therefore and officers saw him they cried out saying Crucifie him Crucifie him Pilate saith unto them Take ye him and Crucifie him for I find no fault in him 6. Thus Christ is the Foot-ball of Cruelty and Heathen Scorn Pilate saith let it be your own dowing if you will needs have it done for by our Law he deserveth it not 7. The Jews answered him We have a law and by our law he ought to die because he made himself the Son of God 8. When Pilate therefore heard that saying he was the more afraid 9. And wenr again into the judgment-hall and saith unto Jesus Whence art thou But Jesus gave him no answer 7 8 9. Note The Name of the Son of God was used by the Priests against Christ to accuse and Murder him and yet to a Heathen Judge caused fear and further enquiry And to this day it is matter of Scorn to such that the Faithful are called the Children of God 10. Then saith Pilate unto him Speakest thou not unto me knowest thou not that I have power to Crucifie thee and have power to release thee 11. Jesus answered Thou couldest have no power at all against me except it were given thee from above therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin 10. Note 1. Christ would not tell him whence he was by Words that would not know it by his Works 2. Pilate thought that the power of Life and Death should have forced Jesus to answer him And Christ saith whatever Proud men may claim or pretend to no man can have more Governing Right or Authority than God the absolute Soveraign giveth him who giveth none against himself Therefore the Arch-Priests that deliver me to thee to be Crucified are so much the greater Sinners that would turn Gods Ordinances of Magistracy against himself 12. And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him but the Jews cried out saying If thou let this man go thou art not Cesars friend whosoever maketh himself a King speaketh against Cesar 12. Then the Priests used that Argument with Pilate which he had not strength to overcome as if they would question his Life or Office as a Traytor to Caesar if he would not Condemn Christ as such Though Christ had told him that he pretended not to a Kingdom of this World yet for the Name of a King either Christ must die as an Enemy to Caesar or Pilate go for such Thus though all Royal Authority be of God yet it is oft the strength and most prevailing Argument that Wicked men use against God and his Law and Servants 13. When Pilate therefore heard that saying he brought Jesus forth and sat down in the judgment-seat in a place that is called the Pavement but in the Hebrew Gabbatha 14. And it was the preparation of the passover and about the sixth hour and he saith unto the Jews Behold your King 15. But they cried out Away with him away with him Crucifie him Pilate saith unto them Shall I Crucifie your King The Chief Priests answered we have no King but Cesar 13. When Pilate saw that there was no resisting them without danger to himself he sate in Judgment on Christ in a place called in the Syriack Gabbatha Note The Controversie of the day whether it was that called by us Friday or Wednesday or Thursday and that of the hour whether it was the sixth hour as John saith it was about or the third hour as Marke saith and whether in John it should he read the third as Beza and some others think are both too hard for Vulgar Readers and therefore I leave them to Controversal writers Much is said on both sides Note 2. These Arch-Priests that at the heart were much against Caesar yet to murder Christ as a Rebel pretend to be the greatest Caesarian Royalists 16. Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be Crucified And they took Jesus and led him away 17. And he bearing his Cross went forth unto a place called the place of a scull which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha 17. He bare his Cross till his strength failed and then they made Simon of Cyrene to bear it to a place called in Syriack Golgotha or the place of a Skul 18. Where they Crucified him and two other with him on either side one and Jesus in the midst 19. And Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS 18 19. Note The Title signified his accusation 20. This title then read many of the Jews for the place where Jesus was Crucified was nigh to the city and it was written in Hebrew and Greek and Latine 20. Written in Syriack or Chaldee words with Hebrew Letters and in Greek and Latine 21. Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate Write not The King of the Jews but that he said I am King of the Jews 22. Pilate answered What I have written I have written 21 22. The Title which Pilate made in Scorn and God over ruled as real Truth displeased the Arch-Priests but Pilate would not alter it 23. Then the Souldiers when they had Crucified Jesus took his garments and made four parts to every souldier a part and also his coat now the coat was without seam woven from the top throughout 24. They said therefore among themselves Let us not rent it but cast lots for it whose it shall be that the scripture might be fulfilled which saith They parted my raiment among them and for my vesture they did cast lots These things therefore the souldiers did 23. Not that the Prophesie made them do it but was
for the tumult he commanded him to be carried into the Castle 33 34. A Heathen would hear the cause before he judges it when superstitious Zealots execute before they try or hear 35. And when he came upon the stairs so it was that he was born of the Souldiers for the violence of the people 36. For the multitude of the people followed after crying Away with him 35. The Heathen Soldiers were fain by force to carry and guard him from these Hypocrites 37. And as Paul was to be led into the castle he said unto the cheif Captain May I speak unto thee Who said Canst thou speak Greek 38. Art not thou that Egyptian which before these days madest an uprore and leddest out into the wilderness four thousand men that were murderers 37 38. The tumult about him made him suspect him to be an Incendiary that had lately raised sedition 39. But Paul said I am a man which am a Jew of Tarsus a citizen of no mean city and I beseech thee suffer me to speak unto the people 40. And when he had given him licence Paul stood on the stairs and beckened with the hand unto the people and when there was made a great silence he spake unto them in the Hebrew tongue saying 39 40. When he had given him leave to speak and procured silence and audience by his Authority which else the Multitude of Legal Zealots would not have granted him he spake to them in the Chaldec Tongue than called the Hebrew because it was understood by a greater number than the Greek This sheweth that Greek was not then most common CHAP. XXII MEn brethren and fathers hear ye my defence which I make now unto you 2. And when they heard that he speak in the Hebrew tongue to them they kept the more silence and he saith 3. I am verily a man which am a Jew born in Tarsus a city in Cilicia yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel and taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers and was Zelous towards God as ye all are this day 1. I am a Jew brought up a Disciple of Gamaliel under the same Laws and customs and as zealous for God in your way as you now are 4. And I persecuted this way unto the death binding and dilivering into prisons both men and women 4 And as you are affected with zealous cruelty now against Christians so was I then and persecuted them even to death binding and delivering them into Prison both Men and Women 5. As also the high priest doth bear me witness and all the estate of the elders from whom also I received letters unto the bretheren and went to Damascus to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem for to be punished 5. The High Priest and all the Council of Elders called rhe Sanedrim know this from whom I had Letters authorizing me to bring them Prisoners to Jerusalem to be punished 6. And it came to pass that as I made my journey and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me 7. And I fell unto the ground and heard a voice saying unto me Saul Saul why persecutest thou me 6 7. I saw a Light and h●ard a Voice c. Note When Christ will speak in Power and Terror he will cast down the proudest Persecutor 2. Christ taketh the persecuting of his Servants and striving against his Gospel as persecuting himself it being against his Friends and for his Cause 8. And I answered Who art thou Lord And he said unto me I am Jesus of Nazareth whom thou Persecutest 8. Note Did Persecutors know Christ aright and know that it is him in his servants whom they persecute they durst not they would not do it 9. And they that were with me saw indeed the light and were afraid but they heard not the voice of him that speak to me 9. They saw the Light and heard the sound like Thunder but saw no man nor heard the voice and words that were spoken to me and which I heard 10 And I said What shall I do Lord And the Lord said unto me Arise and go into Damascus and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do 10. I will not this way by voice from heaven tell thee thy duty I have stablished the way of notifying it by my Ministers and Spirit Go to Damascus and I will send thee a Teacher Note Souls duely humbled are ready to do any thing that God would have them do 11. And when I could not see for the glory of that light being led by the hand of them that were with me I came into Damascus 11. Note God made the Light it self to blind him as an Emblem of his persecuting blindness 12. And one Ananias a devout man according to the law having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt there 13. Came unto me and stood and said unto me Brother Saul receive thy sight And the same hour I looked up upon him 12. Ananias a zealous Jew tho a Christian well spoken of by the Jews themselves was sent to restore my sight c. 14. And he said The God of our fathers hath chosen thee that thou shouldest know his will and see that Just one and shouldest here the voice of his mouth 15. For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard 14 15. It is the free grace and will of God that hath chosen thee to see Christ whom thou persecutest and to hear his voice from Heaven and to be his witness of what thou hast seen and heard Note Paul is a full instance of Gods special electing grace 16. And now why tarriest thou arise and be baptized and wash away thy sins calling on the name of the Lord. 16. Delay not but presently repent and believe in Christ and give up thy self to him in his baptismal Covenant and as the Water washeth this body his pardoning grace through the merits of his blood and righteousness shall wash away the guilt of thy sins and call on the Lord for Mercy and for his Spirit 17. And it came to pass that when I was come again to Jerusalem even while I prayed in the temple I was in a trance 18. And saw him saying unto me Make haste and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me 17. Note God that foreknew that the Jews would obstinately reject Paul directed his Ministry from them elsewhere 19. And I said Lord they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee 20. And when the bloud of thy martyr Stephen was shed I also was standing by and consenting unto his death and kept the raiment of them that slew him 19 20. Lord Sure they will hear me without prejudice who have so hotly persecuted they Servants as they do 21.
Paul a more capable receiver of Mercy than he should have been if he had maliciously sinned against Knowledge 14. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus 14. And this Mercy which called me hath poured out on me by the Holy Ghost an abundant measure of Faith in Christ and love to him and his which carrieth me on in his Work with Zeal and unwearied diligence 15. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am chief 15. This is the Great Article of our Christian Faith which we may trust to and of great comfort to us all and worthy of our thankful acceptation That Christ came into the World to save Sinners which I that am one of the chief must therefore predicate with chiefest Thanks 16. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all long-suffering for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting 16. But it pleased God to shew mercy to me so great a Sinner to magnifie his Grace and encourage all Sinners against Despair that in me Christ might exemplarily shew his gracious Patience and Forbearance and confirm all Sinners in the hope of Everlasting Life who after shall believe and be converted 17. Now unto the King eternal immortal invisible the onely wise God be honour and glory for ever and ever Amen 17. The sense of this unspeakable Mercy calleth up my Soul and should do all to speak with joy the Praises of our God who is Eternal Immortal Invisible the onely God absolutely Wise over Angels and all Creatures To him be honour and Glory for ever and ever Amen 18. This charge I commit unto thee son Timothy according to the prophecies which went before on thee that thou by them mightest war a good warfare 19. Holding faith and a good conscience 18. Note 1. By Charge is meant holding Faith and a good Conscience and keeping the Doctrine committed to him by Paul as a faithful Minister and Soldier of Christ against all Opposition 2. It seems some particular Prophecy such as Aga●us had of Paul and many then had had foretold that Timothy should be a faithful Minister 19. Which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwrack 20. Of whom is Hymeneus and Alexander whom I have delivered unto Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme 19 20. Which some have cast away and lost the Christian Faith Such are Hymeneus and Alexander whom I have delivered to Satan as Gods Executioner of some Bodily Punishment to see whether Correction will convince them of their Blasphemy Note 1. What their Blasphemy was is after shewn 2 Tim. 2.17 4.14 2. That Satan is oft Gods Executioner in Correction and Destruction is certain and that such is the Delivery here meant for want of Christian Magistrates But it was none of Satans desire but Gods hereby to teach them not to blaspheme CHAP. II. 1. I Exhort therefore that first of all supplications prayers intercessions and giving of thanks be made for all men 1. As I have oft said That Charity is the End and Sum of Religion I exhort that this may be sincerely manifested in your Religious Worship and that you heartily pray for all sorts of Men that God would save them from Sin and Misery and give them Grace and Mercy and be thankful for their Welfare as if it were your own 2. For kings and for all that are in authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty 2. For Kings and for all that are in Preeminence or Superiority that they may so govern that we may be protected in the quiet serving of God in Godliness and decent Conversation with Men without Reproach and Persecution Note 1. That the Character of the Rulers that we are to pray for is not onely 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 jus r●gendi Right but 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 〈◊〉 Preeminence Pray for him that hath the right of Governing as far as you can know it But submit to him that hath setled Possession so far as it wrongeth not anothers Right and so far pray for such that we may live a quiet and peaceable Life in all Godliness and Honesty 3. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour 4. Who will have all men to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth 3 4. For this is agreeable to the great Mercy manifested in Mans Redemption by Jesus Christ who by his Death and Covenant of Grace and Preaching hath shewed us how willing he is that all Men should be saved and come to the knowledge of his Gospel Note 1. That while we obediently pray as God commandeth us we may confidently expect Gods acceptance 2. An extensive Charity rendreth us like Christ 3. It is not onely all sorts of men that Christ would have to be saved but he willeth the Salvation of all Men in general so far as to make a Sacrifice sufficient for all if all will believe and to make an Act of Oblivion or general Pardon and Gift of Life to all on Condition of Acceptance and to send his Messengers promiscuously to all with the Word of Reconciliation to beseech them to be reconciled to God What Christ giveth to all he willeth and purchased for all But he giveth to all a Pardon and Right to Life on Condition of Acceptance Therefore he is so far willing of their Salvation 5. For there is one God and one mediatour between God and men the man Christ Jesus 6. Who gave himself a ransom for all to be testified in due time 5 6. For it must move us to pray for all in compliance with this Will of God that would have all Men saved because there is One God who is good to all and One Mediatour between God and Mankind who took on him the Common Nature of all Men and gave himself a Ransom for all revealed in the Season appointed of God or to be preached to all in due time as God pleaseth Note The Controversie about Universal Redemption too hotly agitated by Beza Piscater and others on one side and by many on the other I have fully handled in my Catholick Theologie and Methodus Theologiae and it needs no more than as aforesaid 1. Whoever is damned it is not because no Ransom was made for him or because it was not sufficient for him 2. By Gods Will to save all is meant the Effects of his Will that have a tendency to their Salvation 3. It is notorious that God hath made an Universal Act of Grace or Oblivion giving Pardon of all Sin and Right to Life in Christ to all Men without exception on Condition of Believing-acceptance and hath commissioned his Ministers to offer this Gift to all Men to the utmost of their power and entreat them to
