every_o ordinance_n of_o man_n for_o the_o lord_n sake_n whether_o it_o be_v to_o the_o king_n as_o supreme_a or_o unto_o governor_n as_o unto_o they_o that_o be_v send_v by_o he_o for_o the_o punishment_n of_o evil-doer_n and_o for_o the_o praise_n of_o they_o that_o do_v well_o but_o alas_o fancy_n and_o opinion_n sometime_o over-rule_v reason_n and_o scripture_n both_o or_o else_o we_o shall_v never_o have_v know_v such_o horrid_a impiety_n commit_v among_o ourselves_o as_o to_o see_v a_o king_n dethrone_v and_o murder_v by_o his_o own_o subject_n and_o the_o house_n of_o god_n which_o our_o saviour_n denominate_v a_o house_n of_o prayer_n to_o become_v a_o den_n of_o thief_n which_o be_v too_o true_o so_o indeed_o when_o our_o church_n be_v profane_v rob_v and_o plunder_v of_o their_o decent_a ornament_n by_o wicked_a and_o cruel_a hand_n and_o pure_a religion_n which_o be_v there_o profess_a force_v to_o retire_v and_o hide_v its_o head_n in_o a_o corner_n and_o our_o clergy_n the_o lawful_a minister_n of_o christ_n sequester_v from_o their_o livelihood_n and_o employment_n too_o all_o which_o be_v violent_o carry_v on_o under_o the_o specious_a name_n of_o reformation_n and_o liberty_n of_o conscience_n and_o the_o actor_n all_o this_o while_n the_o great_a pretender_n to_o religion_n and_o holiness_n carry_v a_o fair_a outside_n whatever_o be_v within_o but_o even_o thus_o do_v the_o pharisee_n of_o old_a who_o can_v devour_v widow_n house_n under_o pretence_n of_o their_o long_a prayer_n how_o far_o such_o practice_n as_o these_o be_v from_o that_o duty_n we_o stand_v oblige_v to_o by_o the_o law_n both_o of_o god_n and_o man_n must_v needs_o be_v plain_a and_o clear_a to_o every_o one_o that_o be_v not_o wilful_o blind_a they_o be_v the_o great_a reproach_n to_o the_o protestant_a religion_n and_o even_o a_o scandal_n to_o christianity_n itself_o and_o therefore_o to_o be_v explode_v and_o for_o ever_o abominate_v by_o all_o that_o put_v on_o the_o name_n of_o either_o the_o obedience_n require_v of_o we_o be_v a_o voluntary_a and_o hearty_a do_v what_o our_o lawful_a superior_a command_n or_o patient_a suffering_n what_o he_o inflict_v though_o it_o shall_v be_v either_o without_o just_a cause_n or_o somewhat_o more_o excessive_o than_o the_o cause_n require_v but_o in_o all_o lawful_a command_n we_o stand_v oblige_v to_o do_v what_o he_o require_v by_o law_n to_o be_v do_v and_o a_o passive_a obedience_n in_o this_o case_n be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a discharge_n of_o our_o duty_n much_o less_o can_v a_o active_a disobedience_n find_v any_o plea_n for_o such_o as_o refuse_v to_o do_v what_o the_o law_n command_v though_o they_o may_v seem_v content_a to_o suffer_v the_o punishment_n it_o inflict_v be_v no_o better_a observer_n of_o the_o law_n than_o a_o thief_n who_o be_v content_a to_o be_v hang_v after_o he_o have_v rob_v his_o neighbour_n if_o either_o of_o they_o suffer_v the_o law_n it_o be_v for_o their_o offence_n in_o transgress_v it_o and_o what_o glory_n be_v it_o if_o when_o man_n be_v buffet_v for_o their_o fault_n they_o take_v it_o patient_o this_o make_v they_o neither_o the_o better_a man_n nor_o the_o better_a christian_n for_o beside_o that_o it_o be_v to_o be_v suppose_v that_o they_o will_v not_o suffer_v any_o penalty_n if_o they_o can_v find_v a_o way_n to_o escape_v it_o this_o do_v not_o answer_v the_o end_n and_o design_n of_o the_o law_n which_o require_v our_o obedience_n in_o a_o active_a performance_n of_o the_o thing_n command_v and_o the_o punishment_n be_v only_o add_v in_o case_n of_o contempt_n and_o disobedience_n such_o therefore_o a●_n refuse_v to_o obey_v the_o law_n though_o they_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n it_o inflict_v can_v reasonable_o be_v think_v good_a observer_n thereof_o because_o it_o be_v not_o the_o punishment_n that_o the_o lawgiver_n intend_v but_o the_o do_v that_o which_o he_o require_v and_o such_o as_o refuse_v to_o do_v this_o or_o act_v contrary_a to_o it_o not_o only_o offend_v the_o magistrate_n under_o who_o they_o live_v but_o even_o god_n himself_o who_o command_v we_o to_o reverence_n and_o obey_v he_o this_o therefore_o can_v be_v no_o refuge_n for_o those_o pretend_v zealot_n who_o endeavour_n to_o make_v the_o world_n believe_v they_o be_v peaceable_a good_a subject_n if_o they_o quiet_o suffer_v the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n alas_o this_o be_v no_o discharge_n of_o their_o duty_n the_o magistrate_n only_o suppress_v their_o rebellious_a practice_n for_o which_o they_o make_v religion_n a_o cloak_n and_o punish_v their_o disobedience_n which_o they_o endeavour_v to_o palliate_v with_o devotion_n but_o the_o duty_n require_v of_o they_o remains_z still_o unperformed_a and_o sin_n lie_v at_o their_o door_n who_o invert_v st._n paul_n rule_n and_o think_v it_o sufficient_a to_o obey_v mere_o for_o wrath_n and_o not_o for_o conscience-sake_n the_o author_n and_o abettor_n therefore_o of_o such_o absurd_a doctrine_n will_v do_v well_o to_o consider_v that_o when_o they_o fall_v under_o due_a correction_n this_o do_v not_o acquit_v or_o free_v they_o from_o their_o first_o offence_n in_o break_v the_o law_n but_o be_v design_v only_o to_o keep_v they_o in_o better_a order_n and_o make_v they_o better_a subject_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v nor_o will_v it_o at_o all_o justify_v our_o disobedience_n to_o lawful_a authority_n what_o some_o man_n urge_v viz._n that_o the_o thing_n require_v be_v not_o command_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n it_o be_v sufficient_a if_o they_o be_v not_o therein_o forbid_v nor_o contrary_a to_o it_o that_o the_o power_n ordain_v of_o god_n and_o by_o he_o set_v over_o we_o have_v authority_n to_o order_n and_o determine_v some_o thing_n not_o direct_o and_o express_o command_v in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v plain_a and_o evident_a even_o from_o those_o many_o text_n of_o holy_a scripture_n which_o require_v and_o enjoin_v obedience_n to_o the_o magistrate_n as_o for_o those_o thing_n positive_o set_v down_o in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n there_o we_o have_v direction_n for_o the_o performance_n of_o they_o but_o then_o when_o we_o be_v command_v moreover_o even_o by_o the_o same_o word_n of_o god_n to_o obey_v the_o magistrate_n this_o must_v necessary_o suppose_v he_o invest_v with_o a_o power_n to_o command_v we_o some_o thing_n not_o before_o specify_v but_o leave_v to_o his_o determination_n and_o so_o far_o as_o his_o command_n be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o word_n of_o god_n we_o be_v bind_v to_o obey_v they_o if_o the_o magistrate_n command_v we_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v manifest_o impious_a and_o contrary_a to_o the_o know_a will_n of_o god_n we_o be_v then_o with_o reverence_n to_o refuse_v and_o allege_v our_o duty_n to_o god_n for_o our_o warrant_n but_o this_o refusal_n must_v be_v with_o submission_n and_o reverence_n still_o reserve_v our_o lawful_a subjection_n and_o loyalty_n this_o must_v be_v with_o a_o passive_a obedience_n not_o resist_v but_o submit_v to_o the_o penalty_n of_o the_o law_n and_o in_o this_o case_n we_o must_v betake_v ourselves_o to_o the_o weapon_n of_o the_o primitive_a christian_n viz._n prayer_n and_o tear_n but_o thanks_o be_v to_o god_n we_o have_v no_o ground_n for_o any_o such_o complaint_n we_o have_v no_o command_n impose_v upon_o we_o but_o such_o as_o be_v easy_a to_o be_v bear_v and_o very_o agreeable_a to_o a_o good_a christian_a temper_n may_v it_o therefore_o please_v almighty_a god_n long_o to_o continue_v such_o a_o prince_n among_o we_o who_o endeavour_n may_v always_o be_v to_o protect_v and_o support_v such_o as_o be_v commit_v to_o he_o and_o to_o govern_v they_o prudent_o and_o after_o a_o holy_a manner_n and_o may_v it_o enter_v into_o every_o subject_n heart_n to_o be_v faithful_a submissive_a and_o obedient_a to_o his_o sovereign_n not_o in_o outward_a appearance_n only_o but_o in_o truth_n and_o sincerity_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o to_o own_o his_o supreme_a power_n and_o authority_n unless_o we_o assert_v they_o in_o our_o action_n and_o demonstrate_v the_o reality_n of_o our_o intention_n by_o all_o the_o outward_a act_n of_o fidelity_n and_o love_n nor_o must_v we_o be_v want_v if_o need_v so_o require_v to_o assist_v he_o with_o our_o estate_n we_o be_v bid_v by_o st._n paul_n to_o render_v tribute_n to_o who_o tribute_n as_o well_o as_o honour_n to_o who_o honour_n be_v due_a and_o that_o tribute_n be_v ancient_o pay_v be_v evident_a by_o our_o saviour_n determination_n in_o my_o text_n of_o the_o question_n propose_v to_o he_o and_o elsewhere_o he_o confirm_v the_o same_o though_o at_o the_o expense_n of_o a_o miracle_n even_o by_o his_o own_o practice_n matth._n 17.27_o go_v thou_o to_o the_o sea_n speak_v to_o st._n peter_n and_o cast_v a_o hook_n and_o take_v up_o the_o fish_n that_o first_o
