freedom_n to_o trouble_v you_o with_o this_o our_o joynt-requ_a that_o if_o you_o take_v any_o notice_n of_o the_o case_n of_o mr._n richard_n thompson_n of_o bristol_n clerk_n in_o the_o series_n of_o your_o narration_n you_o will_v be_v please_v to_o give_v credit_n to_o the_o report_n which_o we_o shall_v here_o offer_v you_o and_o if_o you_o think_v fit_v to_o communicate_v it_o to_o the_o public_a in_o his_o justification_n and_o defence_n the_o particular_n hereof_o we_o have_v partly_o upon_o very_o good_a authority_n and_o we_o be_v able_a to_o testify_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o rest_n upon_o our_o own_o knowledge_n and_o experience_n as_o to_o the_o character_n life_n and_o conversation_n of_o this_o worthy_a gentleman_n he_o be_v bear_v of_o protestant_a parent_n and_o educate_v in_o the_o method_n and_o principle_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n he_o receive_v his_o order_n of_o priesthood_n from_o the_o hand_n of_o dr._n fuller_n bishop_n of_o lincoln_n in_o the_o year_n 1670._o immediate_o upon_o this_o qualification_n he_o be_v send_v by_o the_o reverend_n dr._n pierce_v to_o serve_v in_o his_o cure_n of_o brington_n in_o northamptonshire_n where_o he_o continue_v some_o year_n with_o a_o very_a fair_a reputation_n about_o the_o year_n 1675._o he_o remove_v from_o thence_o to_o salisbury_n upon_o the_o invitation_n of_o the_o say_a dr._n pierce_n than_o dean_n of_o sarum_n where_o he_o live_v with_o he_o in_o his_o own_o house_n in_o the_o year_n 1676._o the_o dean_n bestow_v upon_o he_o first_o a_o prebend_n and_o then_o a_o presentation_n to_o st._n mary_n in_o marlborough_n in_o 1677._o he_o travail_v with_o mr._n jo._n norborne_n of_o calne_n in_o wiltshire_n but_o within_o less_o than_o a_o twelvemonth_n he_o be_v recall_v upon_o the_o vacancy_n of_o bedminster_n by_o bristol_n his_o present_a live_n when_o he_o be_v abroad_o he_o neither_o study_v at_o st._n omers_n nor_o dovay_n as_o be_v suggest_v nor_o ever_o see_v those_o place_n nor_o pass_v into_o any_o part_n of_o flanders_n or_o italy_n but_o france_n alone_o he_o spend_v near_o seven_o month_n of_o his_o time_n at_o paris_n and_o in_o the_o academy_n of_o monsieur_n fonbert_n a_o protestant_n still_o frequent_v the_o english_a ambassador_n chapel_n and_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n there_o and_o during_o his_o stay_n he_o preach_v twice_o and_o read_v protestant_a church_n and_o that_o only_a receive_v the_o sacrament_n also_o from_o the_o hand_n of_o monsieur_n du_n paizy_n to_o put_v those_o man_n out_o of_o hope_n of_o gain_v he_o over_o that_o have_v already_o solicit_v he_o by_o fair_a promise_n of_o advantage_n to_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n at_o blois_n he_o keep_v himself_o also_o upon_o the_o same_o reserve_v avoid_v even_o to_o lodge_n in_o the_o house_n of_o a_o romanist_n but_o upon_o absolute_a necessity_n he_o be_v not_o yet_o so_o rigorous_a as_o not_o to_o allow_v himself_o in_o a_o curiosity_n to_o make_v a_o acquaintance_n as_o well_o with_o person_n eminent_a in_o their_o several_a order_n of_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n as_o with_o the_o famous_a man_n of_o the_o protestant_a church_n he_o do_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o he_o have_v twice_o or_o thrice_o see_v mass_n perform_v while_o he_o be_v abroad_o but_o it_o be_v curiosity_n not_o religion_n that_o carry_v he_o thither_o and_o that_o he_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v stagger_v in_o his_o faith_n by_o any_o thing_n he_o see_v abroad_o that_o he_o be_v the_o more_o confirm_v in_o it_o and_o that_o he_o will_v rather_o beg_v within_o the_o communion_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n than_o be_v the_o great_a person_n the_o church_n of_o rome_n can_v make_v he_o out_o of_o it_o since_o his_o return_n in_o 1678._o no_o man_n have_v keep_v himself_o more_o strict_o to_o the_o order_n of_o the_o church_n of_o england_n he_o have_v take_v the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n and_o supremacy_n at_o least_o eight_o several_a time_n preach_v and_o act_v in_o conformity_n thereunto_o he_o never_o refuse_v any_o test_n of_o fidelity_n to_o the_o government_n and_o declare_v himself_o ready_a to_o take_v any_o far_a test_n that_o shall_v be_v lawful_o impose_v upon_o he_o sir_n we_o have_v extract_v these_o particular_n from_o evidence_n contestable_a and_o we_o reckon_v it_o our_o duty_n to_o god_n to_o the_o church_n to_o common_a justice_n and_o to_o persecute_a innocence_n to_o present_v this_o account_n to_o yourself_o in_o hope_n that_o you_o will_v transmit_v it_o with_o your_o own_o ingenious_a reflection_n to_o the_o view_n and_o consideration_n of_o the_o world_n we_o have_v annex_v hereunto_o a_o short_a summary_n of_o what_o will_v be_v attest_v on_o his_o behalf_n since_o he_o come_v to_o bristol_n and_o we_o have_v thereunto_o subjoin_v several_a fair_a and_o ample_a certificate_n in_o his_o vindication_n and_o defence_n we_o can_v have_v add_v many_o more_o as_o particular_o a_o certificate_n of_o the_o right_n reverend_a the_o lord_n bishop_n now_o of_o chichester_n late_o of_o bristol_n who_o have_v be_v please_v to_o certify_v mr._n richard_n thompson_n to_o be_v in_o these_o very_a word_n a_o person_n of_o much_o more_o than_o ordinary_a endowment_n for_o learning_n a_o excellent_a preacher_n and_o which_o crown_v both_o the_o former_a a_o man_n of_o a_o clean_a life_n and_o vnreproveable_a conversation_n a_o person_n free_a from_o novelty_n in_o religion_n but_o very_o sound_a and_o orthodox_n in_o the_o doctrine_n he_o preach_v and_o thorough_o conformable_a as_o to_o discipline_n etc._n etc._n and_o then_o afterward_o his_o lordship_n conclude_v thus_o i_o know_v no_o young_a man_n of_o his_o year_n that_o better_a deserve_v very_o good_a preferment_n in_o our_o church_n then_o this_o young_a man_n do_v and_o this_o i_o do_v testify_v sincere_o from_o my_o heart_n and_o give_v under_o my_o hand_n this_o fourteen_o day_n of_o september_n in_o the_o year_n of_o our_o lord_n 1679._o at_o my_o palace_n in_o chichester_n for_o the_o truth_n and_o authority_n of_o the_o whole_a matter_n we_o be_v willing_a and_o ready_a to_o become_v answerable_a and_o shall_v take_v it_o for_o a_o singular_a kindness_n if_o you_o will_v be_v please_v to_o let_v these_o testimonial_n pass_v into_o the_o world_n at_o the_o instance_n of_o sir_n your_o humble_a servant_n a_o full_a auditory_a whensoever_o he_o preach_v or_o when_o he_o read_v the_o prayer_n only_o and_o that_o he_o have_v in_o his_o time_n much_o increase_v the_o number_n of_o communicant_o 4._o there_o be_v many_o most_o worthy_a gentleman_n in_o that_o city_n that_o will_v not_o be_v ashamed_a to_o own_o their_o establishment_n in_o the_o church_n of_o england_n to_o

but_o that_o now_o they_o be_v enjoin_v by_o the_o lord_n of_o the_o council_n to_o make_v deputation_n of_o their_o authority_n to_o such_o as_o be_v their_o know_a enemy_n can_v we_o expect_v to_o enjoy_v our_o magna_fw-la charta_fw-la long_o under_o the_o same_o person_n and_o administration_n of_o affair_n if_o the_o council_n table_n there_o can_v imprison_v any_o nobleman_n or_o gentleman_n for_o several_a year_n without_o bring_v he_o to_o trial_n or_o give_v the_o least_o reason_n for_o what_o they_o do_v can_v we_o expect_v the_o same_o man_n will_v preserve_v the_o liberty_n of_o the_o subject_a here_o i_o will_v acknowledge_v i_o be_o not_o well_o verse_v in_o the_o particular_a law_n of_o scotland_n but_o this_o i_o do_v know_v that_o all_o the_o northern_a country_n have_v by_o their_o law_n a_o undoubted_a and_o inviolable_a right_n to_o their_o liberty_n and_o property_n yet_o scotland_n have_v outdo_v all_o the_o eastern_a and_o southern_a country_n in_o have_v their_o life_n liberty_n and_o estate_n subject_v to_o the_o arbitrary_a will_n and_o pleasure_n of_o they_o that_o govern._n they_o have_v late_o plunder_v and_o harass_v the_o rich_a and_o wealthy_a country_n of_o that_o kingdom_n and_o bring_v down_o the_o barbarous_a highlander_n to_o devour_v they_o and_o all_o this_o without_o a_o most_o colourable_a pretence_n to_o do_v it_o nor_o can_v there_o be_v find_v a_o reason_n of_o state_n for_o what_o they_o have_v do_v but_o that_o those_o wicked_a minister_n design_v to_o procure_v a_o rebellion_n at_o any_o rate_n which_o as_o they_o manage_v be_v only_o prevent_v by_o the_o miraculous_a hand_n of_o god_n or_o otherwise_o all_o the_o papist_n in_o england_n will_v have_v be_v arm_v and_o the_o fair_a opportunity_n give_v in_o the_o just_a time_n for_o the_o execution_n of_o that_o wicked_a and_o bloody_a design_n the_o papist_n have_v and_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a for_o any_o man_n that_o due_o consider_v it_o to_o think_v other_o but_o that_o those_o minister_n that_o act_v that_o be_v as_o guilty_a of_o the_o plot_n as_o any_o of_o the_o lord_n that_o be_v in_o question_n for_o it_o my_o lord_n i_o be_o force_v to_o speak_v this_o the_o plain_a because_o till_o the_o pressure_n be_v full_o and_o clear_o take_v off_o from_o scotland_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a for_o i_o or_o any_o think_v man_n to_o believe_v that_o good_a be_v mean_v we_o here_o we_o must_v still_o be_v upon_o our_o guard_n apprehend_v that_o the_o principle_n be_v not_o change_v at_o court_n and_o that_o these_o man_n that_o be_v still_o in_o place_n and_o authority_n have_v that_o influence_n upon_o the_o mind_n of_o our_o excellent_a prince_n that_o he_o be_v not_o nor_o can_v be_v that_o to_o we_o that_o his_o own_o nature_n and_o goodness_n will_v incline_v he_o to_o i_o know_v your_o lordship_n can_v order_v nothing_o in_o this_o but_o there_o be_v those_o that_o hear_v i_o can_v put_v a_o perfect_a cure_n to_o it_o until_o that_o be_v do_v the_o scotch_a weed_n be_v like_a death_n in_o the_o pot._n mers_n in_o olla_fw-mi but_o there_o be_v something_o too_o now_o i_o consider_v that_o most_o immediate_o concern_v we_o their_o act_n of_o twenty_o two_o thousand_o man_n to_o be_v ready_a to_o invade_v we_o upon_o all_o occasion_n this_o i_o hear_v that_o the_o lord_n of_o the_o council_n there_o have_v treat_v as_o they_o do_v all_o other_o law_n and_o expound_v it_o into_o a_o stand_a army_n of_o six_o thousand_o man_n i_o be_o sure_a we_o have_v reason_n and_o right_a to_o beseech_v the_o king_n that_o that_o act_n may_v be_v better_o consider_v in_o the_o next_o parliament_n there_o i_o shall_v say_v no_o more_o for_o scotland_n at_o this_o time_n i_o be_o afraid_a your_o lordship_n will_v think_v i_o have_v say_v too_o much_o have_v no_o concern_n there_o but_o if_o a_o french_a nobleman_n shall_v come_v to_o dwell_v in_o my_o house_n and_o family_n i_o shall_v think_v it_o concern_v i_o to_o ask_v what_o he_o do_v in_o france_n for_o if_o he_o be_v there_o a_o felon_n a_o rogue_n a_o plunderer_n i_o shall_v desire_v he_o to_o live_v elsewhere_o and_o i_o hope_v your_o lordship_n will_v do_v the_o same_o thing_n for_o the_o nation_n if_o you_o find_v the_o same_o cause_n my_o lord_n give_v i_o leave_v to_o speak_v two_o or_o three_o word_n concern_v our_o other_o sister_n ireland_n thither_o i_o hear_v be_v send_v douglas_n regiment_n to_o secure_v we_o against_o the_o french_a beside_o i_o be_o credible_o inform_v that_o the_o papist_n have_v their_o arm_n restore_v and_o the_o protestant_n be_v not_o many_o of_o they_o yet_o recover_v from_o be_v the_o suspect_a party_n the_o sea-town_n as_o well_o as_o the_o inland_n be_v full_a of_o papist_n that_o kingdom_n can_v long_o continue_v in_o the_o english_a hand_n if_o some_o better_a care_n be_v not_o take_v of_o it_o this_o be_v in_o your_o power_n and_o there_o be_v nothing_o there_o but_o be_v under_o your_o law_n therefore_o i_o beg_v that_o this_o kingdom_n at_o least_o may_v be_v take_v in_o consideration_n together_o with_o the_o state_n of_o england_n for_o i_o be_o sure_a there_o can_v be_v no_o safety_n here_o if_o these_o door_n be_v not_o shut_v up_o and_o make_v sure_a whether_o any_o such_o harangue_n be_v make_v in_o that_o august_n assembly_n or_o not_o i_o can_v say_v but_o i_o be_o sure_a that_o all_o the_o seditious_a and_o treasonable_a pamphlet_n that_o have_v be_v since_o print_v be_v but_o flourish_v upon_o this_o text_n and_o a_o extract_n of_o those_o that_o go_v before_o they_o the_o very_a model_n of_o the_o last_o rebellion_n and_o probable_o the_o design_n of_o a_o other_o but_o england_n and_o ireland_n be_v not_o as_o yet_o ripe_a for_o so_o generous_a a_o undertake_n but_o to_o show_v you_o how_o matter_n pass_v in_o scotland_n i_o will_v transcribe_v the_o very_a word_n of_o my_o author_n and_o leave_v the_o credit_n of_o they_o with_o he_o by_o write_v up_o account_n to_o what_o height_n of_o insolence_n this_o speech_n have_v blow_v up_o the_o enemy_n of_o the_o church_n and_o the_o monarchy_n and_o that_o they_o have_v just_a reason_n to_o fear_v that_o very_o dangerous_a attempt_n if_o not_o a_o downright_a rebellion_n will_v speedy_o ensue_v thereupon_o but_o those_o report_n find_v not_o too_o much_o credit_n at_o london_n where_o they_o that_o shall_v begin_v they_o again_o now_o if_o it_o shall_v please_v god_n so_o to_o order_v it_o that_o the_o duke_n shall_v at_o his_o majesty_n death_n be_v the_o next_o heir_n to_o his_o crown_n i_o can_v see_v how_o any_o humane_a power_n shall_v prevent_v his_o succession_n to_o it_o but_o by_o encroach_a upon_o his_o right_n and_o by_o rebel_a against_o the_o divine_a providence_n that_o give_v it_o to_o he_o so_o that_o be_v the_o inconvenience_n that_o shall_v follow_v upon_o such_o a_o succession_n what_o they_o will_v or_o can_v be_v we_o must_v submit_v to_o they_o upon_o pain_n of_o rebellion_n against_o both_o god_n and_o his_o anoint_v our_o lawful_a prince_n and_o then_o let_v any_o man_n be_v judge_v whether_o it_o be_v better_a to_o fall_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o popish_a prince_n or_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o angry_a god_n who_o be_v a_o consume_a fire_n and_o who_o be_v not_o bind_v by_o any_o act_n of_o parliament_n from_o afflict_v a_o sinful_a and_o rebellious_a people_n so_o though_o the_o church_n of_o england_n have_v all_o the_o reason_n in_o the_o world_n to_o dread_v such_o a_o prince_n yet_o she_o will_v have_v great_a reason_n to_o dread_v a_o rebellion_n against_o he_o because_o it_o run_v she_o upon_o the_o divine_a vengeance_n and_o be_v direct_o contrary_a to_o her_o principle_n and_o the_o practice_n of_o the_o apostle_n and_o primitive_a church_n and_o be_v plain_a downright_a popery_n so_o that_o i_o conclude_v neither_o she_o nor_o any_o of_o her_o child_n will_v be_v guilty_a of_o it_o come_v what_o will_v come_v but_o this_o be_v not_o all_o we_o be_v already_o swear_v to_o bear_v faith_n and_o true_a allegiance_n to_o the_o king_n highness_n supremacy_n the_o oath_n of_o supremacy_n his_o heir_n and_o lawful_a successor_n and_o that_o to_o our_o power_n we_o shall_v assist_v and_o defend_v all_o jurisdiction_n privilege_n pre-eminences_a and_o authority_n grant_v or_o belong_v to_o the_o king_n highness_n his_o heir_n and_o lawful_a successor_n or_o unite_v and_o annex_v to_o the_o imperial_a crown_n of_o this_o realm_n of_o which_o that_o of_o a_o hereditary_a succession_n be_v one_o of_o the_o principal_a and_o we_o be_v swear_v not_o only_o to_o his_o majesty_n who_o god_n long_o continue_v but_o also_o to_o his_o lawful_a successor_n with_o which_o oath_n none_o but_o they_o that_o have_v that_o right_o can_v dispense_v for_o this_o be_v a_o promissory_a oath_n make_v to_o they_o as_o well_o as_o he_o when_o their_o right_n shall_v fall_v his_o majesty_n can_v remit_v their_o right_n nor_o any_o of_o they_o another_o but_o they_o have_v every_o of_o they_o in_o their_o respective_a degree_n and_o order_n a_o indispensable_a right_n confirm_v to_o they_o by_o this_o oath_n nor_o will_v they_o cease_v to_o be_v lawful_a successor_n in_o the_o sense_n of_o this_o oath_n though_o a_o law_n be_v make_v to_o prevent_v bar_n or_o cut_v off_o their_o succession_n because_o all_o that_o be_v mean_v by_o the_o word_n lawful_a in_o this_o place_n be_v to_o be_v understand_v by_o the_o common_a rule_n of_o succession_n settle_v by_o the_o common_a law_n of_o england_n viz._n the_o elder_a son_n or_o daughter_n before_o a_o young_a of_o the_o same_o sex_n etc._n etc._n now_o if_o his_o majesty_n can_v do_v it_o much_o less_o can_v the_o lord_n or_o commons_o do_v it_o because_o they_o be_v all_o within_o the_o obligation_n of_o this_o oath_n and_o it_o be_v unreasonable_a that_o man_n shall_v dispense_v with_o their_o own_o promissory_a oath_n to_o other_o for_o this_o will_v destroy_v all_o faith_n and_o confidence_n among_o man_n and_o pull_v up_o the_o very_a root_n of_o all_o society_n and_o government_n nor_o can_v any_o man_n imagine_v that_o this_o oath_n be_v make_v in_o favour_n of_o a_o protestant_a successor_n only_o h._n 8._o be_v a_o popish_a prince_n in_o who_o time_n it_o be_v settle_v at_o first_o and_o the_o same_o in_o effect_n be_v swear_v by_o the_o oath_n of_o allegiance_n with_o this_o bind_a clause_n i_o do_v believe_v and_o in_o my_o conscience_n be_o resolve_v that_o neither_o the_o pope_n nor_o any_o other_o person_n whatsoever_o have_v power_n to_o absolve_v i_o of_o this_o oath_n or_o any_o part_n thereof_o which_o i_o acknowledge_v by_o good_a and_o full_a authority_n to_o be_v lawful_o minister_v unto_o i_o and_o by_o this_o oath_n we_o be_v also_o bind_v to_o bear_v faith_n and_o true_a allegiance_n not_o only_o to_o his_o majesty_n but_o to_o his_o heir_n and_o successor_n and_o he_o and_o they_o to_o defend_v to_o the_o utmost_a of_o our_o power_n etc._n etc._n which_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v according_a to_o their_o several_a and_o respective_a right_n and_o at_o such_o time_n as_o they_o shall_v grow_v and_o accrue_v to_o they_o and_o every_o of_o they_o and_o although_o this_o oath_n be_v introduce_v by_o a_o protestant_a prince_n yet_o be_v not_o make_v to_o he_o as_o a_o protestant_n but_o as_o lawful_a and_o rightful_a king_n of_o this_o realm_n and_o who_o ever_o be_v so_o have_v and_o must_v have_v right_o to_o impose_v it_o upon_o we_o be_v his_o religion_n what_o it_o will_n so_o that_o beside_o the_o former_a sin_n of_o rebellion_n against_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n here_o be_v a_o apparent_a and_o unavoidable_a perjury_n in_o this_o case_n to_o aggravate_v the_o other_o and_o sure_o no_o good_a religious_a man_n will_v run_v upon_o these_o two_o hideous_a sin_n deliberate_o to_o avoid_v any_o temporal_a affliction_n whatsoever_o so_o that_o be_v the_o case_n just_o such_o as_o it_o be_v represent_v by_o the_o author_n of_o the_o character_n of_o a_o popish_a successor_n it_o will_v not_o justify_v the_o exclude_v of_o such_o a_o successor_n as_o he_o have_v describe_v by_o force_n and_o arm_n against_o his_o right_n and_o our_o oath_n to_o the_o contrary_a though_o we_o be_v never_o so_o certain_a to_o succeed_v in_o the_o attempt_n but_o then_o that_o wicked_a man_n have_v most_o false_o represent_v thing_n to_o we_o and_o so_o as_o it_o be_v impossible_a they_o shall_v ever_o prove_v in_o the_o event_n if_o we_o do_v not_o give_v occasion_n for_o it_o by_o a_o improsperous_a rebellion_n nay_o i_o believe_v i_o may_v say_v if_o we_o shall_v first_o it_o be_v agree_v by_o all_o the_o world_n that_o there_o be_v ten_o protestant_n for_o one_o papist_n through_o all_o the_o dominion_n of_o england_n so_o that_o if_o such_o a_o successor_n shall_v attempt_v to_o extirpate_v they_o the_o bare_a refuse_v to_o aid_n or_o assist_v he_o in_o such_o a_o enterprise_n will_v render_v it_o impossible_a second_o all_o our_o law_n be_v in_o favour_n of_o that_o religion_n that_o be_v establish_v which_o can_v never_o be_v repeal_v but_o in_o parliament_n and_o it_o be_v moral_o impossible_a to_o have_v a_o parliament_n the_o major_a part_n of_o which_o will_v not_o be_v protestant_n who_o will_v never_o consent_v to_o ruin_v themselves_o three_o the_o revenue_n of_o such_o a_o prince_n will_v not_o bear_v the_o charge_n of_o so_o great_a a_o army_n as_o will_v be_v necessary_a to_o reduce_v the_o people_n to_o a_o religion_n so_o general_o detest_v and_o hate_v as_o this_o be_v in_o answer_n to_o this_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n pretend_v first_o that_o he_o may_v have_v foreign_a aid_n and_o second_o that_o he_o will_v have_v mean_n to_o deter_v or_o allure_v many_o from_o the_o protestant_a religion_n to_o his_o own_o as_o to_o foreign_a assistance_n no_o prince_n will_v dare_v to_o admit_v so_o many_o as_o shall_v total_o overpower_v his_o own_o people_n because_o than_o they_o will_v be_v able_a to_o ruin_v he_o as_o the_o saxon_n do_v the_o britain_n and_o he_o may_v be_v sure_a they_o will_v do_v it_o so_o that_o this_o be_v a_o ridiculous_a supposition_n in_o a_o prince_n of_o our_o own_o nation_n that_o have_v no_o other_o dominion_n but_o these_o as_o to_o any_o number_n of_o people_n that_o he_o may_v be_v able_a to_o bring_v over_o to_o his_o religion_n they_o will_v be_v very_o inconsiderable_a in_o proportion_n to_o those_o that_o will_v never_o be_v bring_v over_o though_o we_o suppose_v the_o number_n great_a than_o it_o be_v like_a to_o be_v
