immanitie_n and_o fierceness_n to_o courtesy_n and_o mildness_n from_o error_n to_o truth_n from_o heresy_n to_o the_o faith_n which_o course_n the_o ancient_a father_n ever_o hold_v in_o such_o like_a case_n which_o if_o the_o other_o pope_n have_v follow_v in_o these_o latter_a age_n and_o have_v not_o arrogate_a to_o themselves_o that_o same_o insolent_a and_o proud_a and_o hateful_a domination_n over_o king_n and_o emperor_n in_o temporal_a matter_n it_o have_v go_v better_a than_o at_o this_o time_n it_o do_v with_o the_o christian_a commonwealth_n and_o peradventure_o those_o clergy_n person_n be_v commit_v to_o other_o then_o to_o civil_a judge_n that_o be_v grant_v they_o by_o the_o singular_a grace_n and_o privilege_n of_o prince_n whereas_o by_o the_o common_a law_n cleriques_n as_o well_o as_o laique_n be_v subject_a to_o the_o temporal_a authority_n of_o secular_a prince_n and_o this_o be_v ground_v on_o that_o reason_n which_o bellarmine_n himself_o deliver_v viz._n that_o clergy_n person_n beside_o that_o they_o be_v clergy_n person_n be_v also_o citizen_n and_o certain_a part_n of_o the_o common_a wealth_n politic_a hence_o it_o be_v that_o under_o the_o best_a and_o holy_a christian_a prince_n all_o the_o cause_n of_o clergy_n man_n as_o well_o civil_a as_o criminal_a so_o as_o they_o be_v not_o ecclesiastic_a be_v wont_a to_o be_v debate_v before_o civil_a and_o temporal_a magistrate_n 15._o therefore_o the_o clergy_n do_v owe_v to_o secular_a prince_n this_o their_o liberty_n which_o in_o this_o point_n they_o enjoy_v as_o we_o have_v declare_v before_o in_o the_o 15._o chapter_n whereby_o i_o marvel_v that_o the_o same_o bellarmine_n do_v affirm_v that_o the_o pope_n may_v simple_o by_o his_o own_o authority_n exempt_a clergy_n man_n by_o the_o canon_n law_n from_o the_o subjection_n of_o temporal_a prince_n for_o that_o i_o may_v speak_v it_o with_o the_o reverence_n of_o so_o great_a a_o man_n it_o be_v as_o false_a as_o false_a may_v be_v because_o the_o law_n of_o christ_n deprive_v no_o man_n of_o his_o right_n and_o interest_n but_o it_o shall_v deprive_v if_o it_o shall_v take_v away_o against_o their_o will_n that_o subject_n to_o heathen_a prince_n as_o other_o citizen_n it_o be_v a_o absurd_a thing_n to_o say_v that_o he_o can_v deliver_v other_o from_o the_o same_o subjection_n otherwise_o that_o may_v agree_v to_o he_o which_o the_o wicked_a blaspheme_a jew_n do_v upbraid_v to_o our_o saviour_n christ_n he_o have_v save_v other_o himself_o he_o can_v not_o save_v and_o in_o this_o point_n the_o authority_n of_o the_o father_n in_o counsel_n can_v not_o be_v great_a than_o the_o pope_n therefore_o this_o place_n require_v that_o we_o also_o convince_v a_o other_o error_n which_o have_v spring_v &_o spread_v very_o wide_o out_o of_o the_o decree_n of_o counsel_n not_o diligent_o and_o advise_o consider_v and_o which_o reach_v at_o this_o day_n i_o know_v not_o how_o far_o and_o to_o what_o person_n viz._n that_o counsel_n have_v free_v clergy_n man_n from_o the_o authority_n &_o jurisdiction_n of_o magistrate_n which_o be_v as_o far_o from_o all_o truth_n as_o may_v be_v for_o it_o be_v no_o where_o find_v in_o any_o council_n that_o the_o father_n assume_v to_o they_o so_o much_o authority_n as_o to_o deprive_v secular_a judge_n of_o their_o authority_n and_o jurisdiction_n over_o the_o clergy_n or_o in_o any_o sort_n forbid_v they_o to_o hear_v and_o determine_v the_o cause_n of_o clergy_n man_n be_v bring_v before_o they_o unless_o it_o be_v after_o that_o by_o the_o singular_a bounty_n of_o divine_n which_o begin_v from_o justintanus_n that_o privilege_n of_o court_n be_v grant_v to_o church_n man_n for_o when_o as_o these_o grave_a father_n themselves_o which_o be_v present_a and_o precedent_n in_o counsel_n be_v subject_a to_o temporal_a authority_n as_o saint_n augustine_n teach_v in_o expositione_n cap._n 13._o epist._n ad_fw-la rom._n it_o can_v not_o
